ST. PAUL, Minnesota (CNN) — Roughly nine weeks before Election Day, a new CNN poll of polls shows Barack Obama holding a five point lead over John McCain. Only four days after Obama’s acceptance speech and three days after McCain’s pick of Sarah Palin as his running mate, Obama is now ahead of McCain, 49 to 44 percent.

CNN’s previous poll of polls, released August 24, showed Obama leading McCain by four points, 46 to 42 percent.

“Any bounce Obama might have received out of his party’s convention appears to have largely negated by McCain’s surprise selection of Gov. Palin as his running mate,” said CNN Political Editor Mark Preston. “This race has been close all along, and is unlikely to change.”
The three polls included in CNN’s latest national survey average were conducted by CBS, CNN/Opinion Research Corporation, and Gallup. They were each conducted from August 29 to 31. The poll of polls does not have a margin of error.

I don't trust these polls. No one has pooled me for years. These pollsters only poll a bunch old people totally leaving the young who don't stay home by their phones waiting to be polled. We're in the 21st. Century and 99.999999% of Americans can be found on Cell phones and on the move constantly. The Young have no time to stop and be polled. Factor this into the polling equation and you find that Obama may be about 15% or more ahead.

Wolf Blitzer cannot let alone something that should be private. This is why I rarely watch cnn. They have been in the tank for obama and did not check him out and now want to destroy palin and her daughter. He has been told by everybody to leave it alone and he won't. Why does cnn have investigators in Alaska looking for every piece of dirt that could possibly be spoken? I can not see why anyone would want to put up with the news people to become one of our candicates. Nothing is sacred. STOP.

You are just showing how sorry you are.

Borignal   September 1st, 2008 7:50 pm ET

I believe that quote about the Obama campaign bump from the Dem election was from a previous article which referred to a 49 - 48 CNN poll. If this new info is correct, Obama "has" received a bit of a bump…..or McCain's support has dipped by 4 pts.

don't sell the young people short. being young does not mean they can't evaluate the difference between what Obama says and what Obama does. I'm sure that after realising that all of his proposals are variations of other candidates and his plans to implement them are all based on ifs they are very capable of making the right decisions

patrick   September 1st, 2008 7:45 pm ET

More interestingly, the polls from Gallup and Rasmussen are even larger, yet due to polling characteristics, its hard for anybody to be able to put a finger on the real numbers. I think its more important to pay attention to the Electoral map.

Mad at McDumb   September 1st, 2008 7:45 pm ET

John is killing our Republican party, let's vote Ron paul.

SUE, Michigan   September 1st, 2008 7:29 pm ET

If the polls was only landlines, it's a huge lead-the young people supporting Obama have cell phones, whose numbers are not available to pollsters. So give me a poll with the youth vote included, and I bet Obama is up by 20 points. Palin and her lies won't get them excited about McCain or bad Republican policy. They see their parents struggling, grandparents having to choose medicine or food, and no answers at all from the Republicans except "no new taxes." Oh, and don't forget that big job opportunity-come serve in the military and protect our country from ourselves. Not gonna cut it this year.

jay   September 1st, 2008 7:16 pm ET

have anybody ever thought about what the republicans would have said if this pregnancy story had come out about a democratic nominee?now all they do is spin spin and spin-'its a private matter'-since when has something like that about democrats been private matter to republicans?the first time the country expect a presidential decision from Mcsame he failed so woefully.

mmmm… All you Obama fans are so sensitive . So insecure just like your rock star candid is! So interesting how he picked someone so much older as VP. Insecure he is! McCain on the other hand picked A young running mate! confidence !!! That is why he only leads by 5 points. There are many americans who are not buying the Rock Star performances and the preaching style.

Thinker   September 1st, 2008 7:12 pm ET

Of course Obama is our next president! What are you up to CNN? Slim lead? Fiddlesticks! Your wording skews the fact that Obama has a solid lead!

JR, Boston   September 1st, 2008 7:10 pm ET

These public polls are a joke. They are based on 2004 turnout models, and John Kerry did not motivate young and black voters the way that Obama does. Take these polls and add an extra 4 or 5 points for Obama.

And the Palin pick seals the deal for the democrats. McCain had a chance to make a play for independent voters but instead he chose an extreme right winger who doesn't even support abortion in the cases of rape and incest, and who's extreme views on abstinence only education are even more out of touch with reality than McCain is.

In a year when democratic registration leads republican registration by 10-12 percentage points, McCain needed to make a VP pick that would court the moderates. He didn't. He decided to rally his base, which of course is a lot smaller than the democratic base. And he alienated moderates.

There are other dimensions to his incompetence. In the battle for electoral votes, McCain has unilaterally disarmed in Iowa (ethanol) and New Mexico and Colorado (water rights). Add those states to Kerry's 252 and McCain has basically ceded this election to Obama.

He'd probably run the country the way he's running his campaign, which is to say, like George W. Bush, incompetently.

Just say no.

longhairs for obama   September 1st, 2008 7:05 pm ET

i'll take a 5-point lead. three or four more points would be considered a landslide. i look for those numbers to happen in next few days with palin ,polar bear abuser, being selected for vp .

Kathy   September 1st, 2008 7:00 pm ET

With Sarah Palin as McCain's running mate it will become more difficult for the Obama team to win this election, for some reason she electrifies the base, I still haven't figured out why, besides that she is a woman, but she helped the campaign raise 10 million in about 3 or 4 days, that is pretty impressive if you asked me.

Katie   September 1st, 2008 7:00 pm ET

When Jamie Lynn Spears, age 17, was announced as being pregnant this year, evangelists and the same type of people who support Palin now were outraged, calling her the "spawn of satan" and criticizing the parenting techniques of her mom and dad. These same people are now using Palin's daughter's (also only 17) pregnancy as another opportunity to praise her, saying that since she is keeping the baby and marrying the father, all is well? Something is wrong. It will take nothing less than a personality transplant to get these people to finally see the truth. After all, with McCain being one of the oldest candidates ever up for the election, and having cancer four times in the past, is Palin really the one we should trust as commander in chief of our country? She can't even keep control over her own daughter… how can she be expected to keep control of a nation of millions?

CNN's poll of poll always comes out at odd times that are positive for McSame's campaign. Latest CBS poll shows Obama ahead by 8 points and latest Gallup poll shows Obama ahead by 6 points. Yet CNN poll only shows Obama ahead by 1 point. CNN thinks the people are stupid. Evereyone knows CNN suported Clinton over Obama and supports McCain over Obama. The people know about CNN so-called "objective" news reporting…not!

Valecia Carpenter   September 1st, 2008 6:58 pm ET

McCain was trying to shake thinks up and create excitement for his own political gain. Unfortunately he created a mess and the Republicans are blaming the liberals. They want to make Sarah a victim to gain the sympathy vote from women. They want women to be angry with Barack. It’s not going to work. This is about a poor judgment call made by McCain. We are taking American back, and the government will work for the people. ENOUGH!

Sean   September 1st, 2008 6:57 pm ET

It doesn't matter how bad a pick Palin is, Republicans will love her. It doesn't matter how good a pick she is, Democrats will hate her. The real question is how are the independents receiving her. In the end, they will decide this race.

By the way…McCain's status as a war hero doesn't make him any better a candidate than Obama's ability to string two sentences together coherently. Making a decision on who should lead our nation and the free world based solely on whether their name is followed by an (R) or a (D) is insane and irresponsible. Look at their policies, positions, and what they want to accomplish and vote intelligently. Not an American strong suit, I know.

RCP Average 08/29 - 08/31 — 48.8 44.3 Obama +4.5
CBS News 08/29 - 08/31 781 RV 48 40 Obama +8
CNN 08/29 - 08/31 927 RV 49 48 Obama +1
Gallup Tracking 08/29 - 08/31 2733 RV 49 43 Obama +6
Rasmussen Tracking 08/29 - 08/31 3000 LV 49 46 Obama +3

Sour McCain supporters can smirk all they want about the supposed lack of Obama bounce. But as an Obama supporter, I'd rather be up in every poll than down.

Maybe McCain's supporters are as confused as their candidate is and think being down in every poll is a good thing?

Let's see where things stand as more info about the apparently unvetted Palin comes out.

Don't know about you, but if this VP pick is McCain's idea of a good decision, I don't think he's fit to be making decisions about the nation's well-being.

The lead will grow once more comes out about Palin. A staunch Republican I have known for years is now voting for Obama because of all this coming out about her. He, like many, see McCain's first importan decision as a failure. Like someone said, the undecides are not comfortable with the Palin pick.

McCain is a gambler … it is well know that he goes to casinos to play Craps … he knew he needed a big score so he's rolled the dice with Palin ….

This shows us how he'd be as president, risky, impulsive, undisciplined.

It's been said that McCain agrees with the last person that talks to him, that's why he's flip flopped on so many issues this year. He really isn't his own man anymore and his mind IS NOT what it was 8 years ago.

With this hasty, reactive VP pick McCain has rolled "snake-eyes". You can't tell me Huckabee, Romney, Ridge, Lieberman, Rice, Hutchinson were not better, more qualified choices for VP nominee of the Republican party in 2008.

Rita from the Carolinas   September 1st, 2008 5:44 pm ET

The reason that pools are so close is that the media has not focused on MCCain's erratic and dangerous decision-making process, which now has been highlighted by his irresponsible pick of Sarah Palin as VP. Not only is she completely without the knowledge and experience to become VP (and God forbid President if something happens to McCain) but also she has the wrong temperament to be in high office. It appears that troughout her career in Alaska she has shown to be a person who likes to fire anyone that disagrees with her or anyone that does not carry out her orders. They have just discovered 3 additional instances in which she abused her power in addition to the case for which she is being currently investigated. Therefore, we have an impulsive and reckless McCain and a vinidictive Sarah Palin as the republican ticket. God help us!

Using facts and history, something the worshippers of Obama have no concept of, Obama will loose by about 10 points in November. It will be a McCain landslide. Over the last 30 years the Donk candidate has been ahead by 10 to 15 points at this time of the year but have lost the elections except for twice. The Obama worshippers are entitled to their opinion here but NOT their own facts.

How about the CNN poll taken a couple of days ago? Voters prefer Biden over Palin 68% to 32%. And the poll taken today, "Are you financially better off in recent years?" 58% to 21% say we are worse off.

Scott   September 1st, 2008 5:24 pm ET

It's funny how people's perception of polls work. All of you Obama supporters were loving it when Obama had a bigger lead… however, anytime McCain gains ground or (in this case) negates the convention bump… suddenly "polls don't matter", or excuses pop up like, "if CNN polled certain demographics it'd be different"….

It'll be interesting to see how the polls look after the debates. When Obama doesn't have a speech in front of him, he'll get the beat down by McCain. All the rhetoric he spews will mean nothing when he needs to answer specific questions about his policies.

Bill NJ   September 1st, 2008 5:22 pm ET

But CNN isn't telling you that when you break down the race in the electoral college, it's not quite so close and it's becoming more difficult to see how McCain/Palin can win. Check out polls on RealClearPolitics for more on this. Again, not a landslide (yet) but a healthy margin for Obama/Biden in the ultimate "poll of polls".

CJ Baskel   September 1st, 2008 5:20 pm ET

I'd really like to see a demographic of who it is that are participating in your polls.

I find it hard to believe with McCain's irresponsible choice of a VP … showing a total lack of concern for the American People and the office of the Vice Presidency - that he is still close in the polls. This was suppose to demonstrate his first major decision as a presidential candidate. With Palin's looming indictment for firing the Alaskan Public Safety Commissioner because he wouldn't fire her ex brother-in-law and lying about it.

Joe   September 1st, 2008 5:19 pm ET

If the media is going to keep using these polls as some sort of barometer of where the candidates stand with the public, you really MUST start stating whether or not these polls are done by land line only with listed on numbers, or include non- listed residents and cell phone users.
And by the way, since when is a increase in popularity for a candidate considered having his bounce negated?

Obama and Clinton once had drug experiments while they were teens. It was their mistakes, just as Bristol Palin's decision to have unprotected sex is her mistake. I do not judge Obama,Clinton or Bristol for their youthful errors in judgment. By the way, we are not electing Palin's daughter. Why should we care too much on her private life? It has nothing to de with our election.

Clinton's affair was much worse scenario than Briston's pregnancy. But I still support Bill Clintion. I still support Hillary Clinton. I appreciated McCAIN's pick on his VP, an ordinary people and a TRUE OUSIDER OF WASHINGTON.

I do not think Obama has the gut and sense to do it.

another way of putting it is this
McCain is still not breaking 45 EVEN with his VP pick.

Independant   September 1st, 2008 5:13 pm ET

Yes.. and any bounce McCain was expecting to get from the Palin pick is now being negated by the fact that it's now know that:
1. She was FOR the Bridge to Nowhere before she was against it
2. She is embroiled in an ethics violoation for firing someone for no reason as Govenor of Alaska
3. She was a member of the AIP (a group wanting Alaska to suceed from the nation)
4. Her daughter is 17 and pregnant

The issue really has much less to do with Palin, and a lot more to do with McCain's lack of vetting, and his poor choice in selecting a VP.
