ST. PAUL, Minnesota (CNN) - A White House official says first lady Laura Bush and Cindy McCain will speak briefly from the podium at the Republican convention tonight, urging delegates and television viewers to help hurricane victims. Mrs. Bush herself said at a Louisiana delegation breakfast Monday morning that she will give a speech tonight, and noted she will talk a bit about what a terrific first lady Cindy McCain will make. The Republican National Committee will reveal more details within the next hour.

Watch: Laura Bush reacts to the storm

Changing the focus from the RNC to the hurricane is a nice way to bow out respectfully and not loose face, DNC hard to follow, they could never top it without being theatrical and in poor taste. Not at all convinced of any real humanitarian conviction of Bush, McCain or GOP.

NO WAY, NO HOW, NO MCCAIN!   September 1st, 2008 11:44 am ET

Trophy wives to speak tonight?

What happens if they hold a convention and no one watches?

facts are facts   September 1st, 2008 11:40 am ET

Laura and Cindy should be able to convince everyone that because Alaska is close to Russia Sara is the best pick for her foreign affairs experience.

Your country is rapidly becoming the laughing stock of the world when they see John McCain is within 50% of the popular vote after all his screw ups including his VP pick.

I'd rather watch the hurricane coverage itself. I have 0 interest in ever listening to Cindy McCain.

two weak soft women with no backbone, no morals and no conscience.
two women who stood by and smiled while their men killed millions, planned on killing millions more, and nearly destroyed america and our dreams.

I think the really telling factor in this whole convention will be the ratings report on Friday.

35 million people watched Obama's speech.

Canadian Cate   September 1st, 2008 11:35 am ET

All this vitriol – it's amazing that you all call yourself Americans – what it sounds like to the rest of the world is that you are either Democrat or Republican – not American – grow up all of you!

Cynthia   September 1st, 2008 11:34 am ET

I saw an interview with Cindy McCain where she said that she was offended by what Senator Obama said about them having all those houses. She might as well get over it. Since they beginning they have been trying to paint Senator Obama as an elitist and I was offended by that. If anyone is an elitist, she and Senator McCain are. By the way, will she be introducing the other sister(s) that her dad had by her father that she never mentions?

I don't have a problem with Laura, poor thing, she's married to George Bush and that is something in itself.

A-man   September 1st, 2008 11:33 am ET

To pretend this is an election between McCain who pretends to be a new type of republican and Obama is a joke. It is still an election between the Democrates and the Republicans, one of which last term is a joke and the other who's last term was very positive for the USA. For this election to be close is to say there is a lot of stupid people in the USA.
Just the world observing!

vog   September 1st, 2008 11:33 am ET

I can't believe how much this hurricane has been politicized. Republicans are trying to repair the damage to their reputation and democrats are being forced to say stuff because they don't want to look bad. The storm already dropped to a category 2 and I expect it will not get worse. New Orleans has learned from mistakes and Gustav will be no Katrina.

It should be a piece of cake for both of them......It's the same 'ol same'ol that their husbands have been saying for the last 8 years!!!...DUH

Blake   September 1st, 2008 11:28 am ET

de,ja,vu Last week history was made, Obama spoke years to the day after King, and a week later history was made once more, katrinas devastation reapears three years on the day McCain is to speak to the country about being its new leder..... Three years ago we will never forget what our present leder did for us.... Maybe this is Gods way to tell us to wake up AMERICA......I WILL SHOW YOU TO THE DAY...

John, NC   September 1st, 2008 11:28 am ET

These two ladies will do great. You need to watch it folks.

S. Boatman   September 1st, 2008 11:27 am ET

Mccain Does Not Want To Give A Speech Because He Just Cant Compare To Obama! He Doesnt Want Bush To Speak Because People Will Join The Two Together! I Dont Think Anyone Wants To Hear Anything From Cindy Because She Will Be Compared To Michele And Look Bad! The Republicans Are In Real Trouble And Everyone Knows It! I Think People Want To Hear About Mccain V P So They Can Dismantle Her!

Jeffer65   September 1st, 2008 11:26 am ET

The Republicans are on their knees now thanking God for this hurricane. it gives McCain a chance to show he can handle things. Bush can make up for the Katrina mess. They can avoid the Cindy McCain-Michelle Obama comparisons. They will take full advantage of this. Really sad.

The GOP need to close shop this week

I have no house   September 1st, 2008 11:24 am ET

8 is enough

Rose   September 1st, 2008 11:24 am ET

More GOP pandering. Anyone with a neuron can see this. Leave it to the Republicans to capitalize on others' misfortunes.

John McShame, Obama Is Going to Tax You & Cindy, but Not Me & 95% Americans Making < $250,000/Yr   September 1st, 2008 11:24 am ET

Cindy McSame said and I quote: 'Sarah Palina lives in Alaska which is the closest state to Russia so she knows foreign policy issues about Russia and the rest of the world" – WOW!! –

The republicans must be taking americans for a ride and thinking all of us are STUPID!

I'm shocked but considering that this was a party that gave americans an unintelligible George Dubya twice for 8yrs in the white house and it's now offering an inexperienced ex-beauty queen to be a breath hair away from the presidency of a senile 72yrs old man; that is really SCARY!

Cindy McSame vetting a U.S.A veepee pick?.!...Wow, THAT'S EVEN SCARIER! – America is DOOMED with this ticket!

GOOD BLESS U.S.A. – Obama '08/'12!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bulldog   September 1st, 2008 11:18 am ET

I love how the GOP and John McCon are using hurricane Gustav as a political stunt. John McCain sure didn't care this much during Hurricanes Katrina or Rita just 3 years ago. He was literally having cake with George Bush while Katrina was destroying New Orleans. Now all of a sudden he cares. Now that's judgment for you.

Jan   September 1st, 2008 11:18 am ET

I will be so excited to listen to these wonderful women. These women are true Americans , who have lived their lives in the public eye and still manage to be graceful and intelligent

brian   September 1st, 2008 11:16 am ET

What, you mean McCain's soul-mate isn't speaking?

susan   September 1st, 2008 11:16 am ET

Of course, Laura Bush will credit Cindy McCain.
The Bushes and McCains are locked at the policy hips.
More of the same.
Will Cindy McCain finally purge her conscience and make a grand gesture tonight of donating all her father's Mafia-obtained fortune to Hurricane Relief?

Debby   September 1st, 2008 11:11 am ET

Well it could be their speech's will put McCain ahead so I am looking forward to hearing what they have to say.

Sam   September 1st, 2008 11:09 am ET

I have no interest in watching a party that has brought so much economic hardship on american families. It does not matter what they say, I know what they stood for the past eight years.

Mikey   September 1st, 2008 11:08 am ET

Why haven’t the Republicans postponed their convention? Could it be because they have been able to avoid the following?

1. A speech by George W. "worst President in history" Bush to remind us of what we would be voting for with McCain.
2. A speech by one of the most hated people in America, Dick Cheney.
3. A speech by John McCain, who would bore the snot out of everyone and provide yet another reason NOT to vote for him.
4. A speech by Sarah Palin that probably would have served to show how weak a VP pick she is.
5. A speech by Cindy McCain that would have been compared to the much more substantial Michelle Obama.

They have a better chance of being re-elected the less they are seen by the majority of Americans. Then, again, we could just vote the bums out of office and get to working on rebuilding America with Obama/Biden 08. Yes we can!

WhoIsPalin?   September 1st, 2008 11:06 am ET

Now here are two Speeches this Ex-republican is definitely not looking forward to watching!!!

Gifty   September 1st, 2008 11:06 am ET

Beautiful! Speak on we are listening.

sacto joe   September 1st, 2008 11:06 am ET

Senator McCain is a FLIP-FLOPPER of monumental proportion. His pick for VP is totally inexperienced. And yet not a week ago he was insistent that experience was crucial to anyone who might become President.

You can't trust anything John McCain says. He's just another politician who will say and do anything to get elected!

Elaine   September 1st, 2008 11:05 am ET

Post this CNN

Maybe Laura can explain why she said what she said on ABC this morning and then explain why there's already water going over one of the levee's.

Also she needs to explain why her husband is at the Texas ranch and not at the White House.

I wonder if Cindy will be wearing her cast.

NPA   September 1st, 2008 11:05 am ET

It is ironic that it is the GOP convention that is affected by not just rainfall but a hurricane. I guess god answered Dobson's prayer the way god answers every evil person's prayer: give unto them (Dobson; Republican Christians) as they would wish upon the righteous (Obama; true Christians).

Charlotte   September 1st, 2008 11:03 am ET

No thanks – I will be volunteering in the pediatrics ward of our local hospital – doing something for kids in this country instead of just talking about it.
