ST. PAUL, Minnesota (CNN) - A senior adviser to the McCain campaign confirmed Monday that Todd Palin, husband to Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, was arrested for driving while intoxicated in 1984.

"Yes, 24 years ago he had a DWI," senior McCain adviser Steve Schmidt told reporters in St. Paul.

Schmidt was asked if he was worried about the news, and replied, “I was not.”

The story was first reported by David Brody, a CNN contributor and Christian Broadcasting Network News Senior National Correspondent.

WHAT NOW? THIS IS TOO MUCH REVELATION IN ONE DAY. WHAT SORT OF VETTING WAS CARRIED OUT BEFORE HER NOMINATION. I SAY AGAIN, SARAH SHOULD HAVE GIVEN THIS OFFER A SECOND THOUGHT, JUST IMAGINE ALL THE PUBLICITY THE FAMILY IS GETTING.

This happened too long ago for this to matter.

But it's nice of them to dump the family history on a day dominated by hurricane news.

Man, this lady doesn't even have ethics in her own home. Daughter and Husband both all messed up.

I think it's obvious this lady has no business managing our country, whether that's as a President or VP, she and her family lack any and all moral ethics.

Disgusting, but par for the course when it comes to Repuplicans.

No comment. I'll just pretend I didn't hear that. Hurricane Gustav is WAY more important than this family...

Great family values... NOT... I wonder what else we will find out now that the McCain campaign finally sent 8 people to Alaska ot do the vetting after his announcement of Palin as his VP was made.. More and more will come out about Sarah Palin and the sad part is the very lack of judgement McCain is now subjecting this family to.. Still voting Obama/Biden in Nov and nothing McCain does will change that..

    Eight is Enough!

Who cares? Is he in AA? Is he sober now?

What's really troubling is all the news coming out about the Palin's and how they behave today, such as lying to the school system about their duaghter being pregnant and saying she had mono instead. And how the Governor has behaved in the matter of the firing of her former brother-in-law and how that story has changed as more information came out. WHAT WAS MC CAIN THINKING????!!!!!!!!

I have given the democrats second and third and even fourth chances, but this is it. I'VE HAD IT! I didn't think they could get any further down in the mud, but you have proven me wrong again.
CNN-DWI, 24 years ago! Who cares? This is news? WHY DON'T YOU REPORT ON OBAMA'S DRUG USE OF 20 YEARS AGO? HE'S THE ONE RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT. NOT TODD PALIN!

How sad that the misfortune of the people currently suffering the wrath of Gustav has to be the current focus in the news. God Bless Them All. And God Bless the Republicans for introducing these "new" family values.......What's next??? I'd like to know so I can re-educate my children & make sure that my grandchildren "do the right thing".

What is going on? McCain again has exibited a complete lack of judgement in his V.P. choice. Is this the kind of family you want to entrust America to? God bless America. McCain just gave Obama the election on the platter of gold. Congratulations Obama. GO OBAMA/BIDEN 2008 & 2012.

The pregnancy of Bristol Palin is not newsworthy. However, in my opinion, her mother should not be seeking the national spotlight, but caring for her special needs child and supporting her teenager by being by her side. Family should be more important than anything or anyone. If more Americans practiced this credo, our country would be a better off.

And Obama used cocaine when he was younger...not sure why the actions of a candidate's spouse are more noteworthy than the actions of the candidate himself...

How sly of the McCain campaign to release all of this potentially devastating information while the entire country is preoccupied with concern for those being affected by Hurricane Gustav.
But at the end of the day, what do these newest revelations say about Senator McCain's judgment in selecting Palin, and what does it say about Palin's parenting skills and family values (a theme the Republicans are so fond of), when her teenage daughter is already having unprotected sex, and as a result is now pregnant (it would also be interesting to know if the mom-to-be was 16 or 17 when she conceived this child).
Not only does Bristol’s pregnancy mean that both mother and daughter will each give birth during the same year, but perhaps Palin and the Republicans are forcing a shotgun wedding upon the father, whose age is not yet known.
The Democrats have already questioned McCain's judgment, and now his VP selection corroborates their concerns because even if he was anxious to steal the Democrats' thunder by announcing a female running mate, there were several other women he could have selected.

objective: edwards is no longer running for office. this guy's wife wants to be vice-president of the u.s.a.

in all fairness, i don't really care if the guy had a dwi 24 years ago. she should not be punished for something her husband did then. no one is perfect. the main issue is that republicans belive they are morally superior beings.
