Palins release statement on daughter's baby

Bristol Palin, right, is pregnant.

Bristol Palin, right, is pregnant.

(CNN) - Republican Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin and husband Todd are talking directly about their 17-year-old daughter's pregnancy.

In a joint statement released by the McCain campaign, the Palins say their daughter will keep the baby and marry the father.

Full statement from Sarah and Todd Palin:

"We have been blessed with five wonderful children who we love with all our heart and mean everything to us. Our beautiful daughter Bristol came to us with news that as parents we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned. We’re proud of Bristol’s decision to have her baby and even prouder to become grandparents. As Bristol faces the responsibilities of adulthood, she knows she has our unconditional love and support.

"Bristol and the young man she will marry are going to realize very quickly the difficulties of raising a child, which is why they will have the love and support of our entire family. We ask the media to respect our daughter and Levi’s privacy as has always been the tradition of children of candidates."

First of all: congratulations to Bristol Palin, I wish her all the happiness in life.

Secondly: Mother Palin walks the walk and talks the conservative talk but it seems that her own family doens't agree with her extreme stances on abstinence and sex before marriage. This only shows how out of the mainstream this woman is.

Sure, I'll respect her privacy, but not yours. Anything you say, teach, or do (or have every said, taught, or did) is fair game.

I guess the best comment here would be .... "no comment!", as in "need we say more?"

Now if only the Dems could be proud of themselves. Maybe they are proud of the horrible, horrible way they're throwing around all the mud? Obama need not get into dirty politics with his fans doing such a good job for him.

This has definitely shied me away from Obama. I've been in the middle, but I don't want to be lumped in with the folks on the Obama side.

Good for her! While Obama would have told his daughter to get an abortion.

This should have been released by them days ago....but again we catch the Republicans in a life or cover up. What I can't wait for is what comes down in the next few weeks about abuses of power in the Reindeer state......McCain is off his rocker if he thinks this is a winning ticket! Kiny Freedman was right...Obama could even win with Chemical ALi as a running mate. As a Republican I find this ticket to be a sheer joke and one that will backfire on McCain. He really thought he could get the female vote with a woman the is PRO LIFE? 80% of the women in the country are PRO you think they want their rights stripped away just to get a woman in the Vice Residency? Give us a break!!! They wanted Hillary not someone would governed a state with a population the size of Ft. Worth Texas!!!

Please don't politicize the 17yr old girl ... yes we all can agree that abstinence only education doesn't work, but leave her alone, at least she is going to marry the father!

Why is she dragging a special needs child around the country and letting her 16 year old get pregnant while she persues political power?

She has no experience, and this is the "judgement" thats supposed to outweight that?

Okay repuglican christian evangelicals, spin this story, dare you to try....
John mccain must hate this country and he has proven that he cares much more about trying to win an election than this country by putting a woman who has 1.5 yrs experience as governor of Alaska and is a hockey mom for a gamble to pander to women and Clinton voters. No enlightened republican who has a conscience will vote for mccain, they couldn't.

Sarah Palin should be ashamed of herself for putting her own child through such national shame... If Sarah Palin knew she was being considered for the Vice Presidental candidate she should have allowed the child (Bristol) get married before to the annoucement. I feel so sorry for this child (Bristol). We all make mis-steps but hers will go down in history as a part of a political campaign.

good for sarah, even though i am completely for obama biden! poor bristol, i hope she isn't marrying levi simply for the media and her mother's sake. i mean, she may not love, truly, deeply, love the boy, which means it could be a very unhappy marriage. that's no family for a child to be born into.

Sarah Palin, how could you force your daughter to go through this in front of America? Shame on you! I feel so horrible for Bristol, God, imagine being seventeen trying to deal with this in front of so many eyes.

Shame on you, Sarah Palin, shame on you!

All those pro-CHOICE people seem to have a problem when the choice is not to end the pregnancy. Everyday all over this country young girls face these issues.I was one of them, and yesterday my daughter turned 35 years old. There has never been a minute, that I have regreted my decision to keep my child.I wish this young lady all the best, she has my deepest respect . If all families were as kind, and supportive of their childern, as the Palins seem to be, this world would be a much better place.

Don't forget the husband's DUI charge in 86.

Interesting that they dump all this news on the day a hurricane hits New Orleans.

True. These kids are going to have a hard enough time, they don't need the media bothering them. Palin is obviously someone who loves her daughter and is not trying to hide her. Every family has difficult times and I think having this happen now is a good way for the country to see how Palin reacts in the face of these decisions and will shows what a good candidate she is for VP, the support of the Pres.

Yes, yes, that is the right way to act, of course, However, "we are not proud of the fact that our daughter became pregnant at 17" would have been in order as well. Wouldn't any parent be disappointed in their daughter as well as "proud"?
