Palins release statement on daughter's baby

Bristol Palin, right, is pregnant.
Bristol Palin, right, is pregnant.

(CNN) - Republican Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin and husband Todd are talking directly about their 17-year-old daughter's pregnancy.

In a joint statement released by the McCain campaign, the Palins say their daughter will keep the baby and marry the father.

Full statement from Sarah and Todd Palin:

"We have been blessed with five wonderful children who we love with all our heart and mean everything to us. Our beautiful daughter Bristol came to us with news that as parents we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned. We’re proud of Bristol’s decision to have her baby and even prouder to become grandparents. As Bristol faces the responsibilities of adulthood, she knows she has our unconditional love and support.

"Bristol and the young man she will marry are going to realize very quickly the difficulties of raising a child, which is why they will have the love and support of our entire family. We ask the media to respect our daughter and Levi’s privacy as has always been the tradition of children of candidates."

Sarah Palin put her Down Syndrome baby at risk by flying 12 hours from Texas to Anchorage when her water had been leaking. She should not have even been allowed on a plane. What could have happened to the baby. This was a 44 year old woman. She and the baby was at risk just because of her age. Why did she not put the baby's safety ahead of her political needs? When she got to Anchorage she did not go straight to the big hospital, instead she went to a small town one, which was less prepared to handled a birth emergency, especially a premature Down Syndrome baby. I don't understand this woman. Why did she make such a reckless decision. I guess she and McCain really are soulmates.

Not relevant-we are all missing the point. None of this has anything to do with Palin's qualifications. Rather, it is all a reflection on McCain, who recklessly picked a running mate he doesn't even know. She may be a perfect fit for the job, but we don't know, and neither does John McCain. Not only is the selection not putting "country first", it is nothing short of unpatriotic.

Sen. McCain knew about his VP's unwed 17 yr. old daughter preg. and didn't feel that it would be a problem. What's wrong with this picture? What a role modle, what a winderful addition to what would be a part of the first families. NO WAY, NO HOW, NO UNWED TEEN MOTHERS, NO McCain!!

Abstinence only? How many teenagers are really going to not have sex because someone said they shouldn't? Come on folks, lets be real. Contraception is the best way to go. You can't stop teenagers from having sex at least you can teach them to have protected sex so we won't have babies raising babies.

Like Obama said personnel responsibility parents be a parent to your kids. You can't have 5 kids one who is pregnant and one with downs who needs constant attention from BOTH parents!!!

How old is the father and how long has this relationship been taking place? If Gov. Palin knew her underage daughter was seeing this man she is just as responsible. What is the age of consent in Alaska? Amagine if this had happened to Chelsey, the GOP would be all over it.
Perhaps the people of Alaska need Sarah more than her family. The up side of this is they can afford to care for the child unlike many ordinary folks who this happens to. In the real world if the father said he was out of there the mother is on her own. How would she manage if her mom was not the Govener?

    Come on you morons.
What did you think/say when that sleaze ball wagged his finger at us and stated " I did not have sex with that woman.... Miss Lewinski"
While all along the sleaze was lying. His values were ?
Cheating on his wife with a gal almost as young as his daughter.

Palin's daughter made a mistake. Sure. But did you never make a mistake as a teenager? Get real.

it will be very interesting to see how much people magazine is willing to pay pallin for pictures of her baby and if they will put her on their cover showering her with praise for her jolie-pitt commitment to family!! let's see how the liberal media uses double-standards to report this compared to noelle richie, britney, etc.i guess only liberal babies are acceptable and not subject to attack!

Through all this, the republicans will still blind their eyes to the V.P. choice. It seems kinda ironic. As far the pregnancy, seems as though she may have just ignored one of the ten commandments. Honor thy mother and father, and I am sure they really didn't want her to become pregnant in her teen years. As for the parenting, kids will do what they wish, she is probably immature. Although I do agree if the lines of communication were more open the mother may have found out earlier. Still Sarah Palin had no choice but to allow her daughter to keep the child, loose all those evangelical votes? I think not!! Oh there he is in the picture the guy(BY THE WAY HER HUSBAND) WHO IS THE HEAD OF THE OIL COMPANIES IN ALASKA) isn't that even more ironic?????

I don't understand how the McCain camp can say that Bristol made the "choice" to keep the baby and that her parents are proud. Bristol didn't have any choice whatsoever. Palin is anti everything; she would never even consider letting her daughter have an abortion. So what choice was there to make?

Let those without sin, cast the first stone. We will keep all of the Palin family in our hearts and prayers.
I do not think this is the first teen that has become pregnant and she will not be the last.

For the daughter's sake, I hope this blows over quickly. What a time to have to go through this. Mom didn't get her pregnant; 17 year olds will have sex if they choose to. But this is why we should be supporting adequate sex education and pregnancy and STD prevention in schools!!! Condoms should be made available because preventing teenage sex is impossible!
What I do judge Sarah Palin for is campaigning for VP with a 4 month old special needs infant at home and not being there for her daughter now!

All jokes aside, this woman was not properly vetted. McCain had only met Palin ONCE before choosing her as his running mate. Now, her daughter is unmarried and pregnant. Now I know stuff happens, but I wonder what the conservatives would say if this had been Chelsea Clinton. Watch them talk out of both sides of their mouth!!! Palin is a bad choice for VP, McCain's judgement is off!!

This is a sad day for conservatives. Its a slap in the face. McCain had only talked to her once before – great.......! My mother always told us to take our time and learn someone's character before opening our lives to them. My mother clearly has superior judgement to McCain.

Roe vs Wade is clearly back on the table and must be discussed in this election. I am mother of two little children and I do not want either of them becoming parents before they are ready!

And to imagine that McCain wants to entrust the future of this great nation into Palin's hands? No way, No How, No McCain!!!!!!!!!!!!!

All over this country, young women face this issue everyday .Many voters are the children of, or the parents of teenage pregnancies. Pro-choice people need to understand that keeping the baby is one of the choices.I made that choice 35 years ago yesterday,I have a wonderful daughter and I have never regreted it for a moment. If all families were as kind, loving, and supportive of their daughters as the Palins seem to be, the world would be so much better for women everywhere.
Bristol has my deepest respect, it is the hardest job she'll ever love, and remember the saying-The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world.

If they had cared about their daughter's privacy, they would have said no when McCain was reckless enough to ask her to be her VP.

This is not a normal story on a candidate's child.

It reveals Palin and the religious right's hyprocrisy.

She has said she won't fund effective sex-ed which would help prevent other teens from getting pregnant.

She supports "abstinence" education, and her daughter like most teens didn't abstain.

Preaching abstinance, even in a very religious family, often doesn't work.

Nice comments, people! Things happen in families that are sometimes difficult. It's how they deal with it as a family. Seriously, back off the judgemental garbage and move on. Maybe clean up your own house while you're at it.

Oh give me a break (as John Stossel used to say). Even good parents can have a child make a mistake. What a stupid issue! This is worse than what Bill did in the Oval office? ... and we put him back in. Ok, even fantastic parents don't have perfect children. Put your "stones" down.

This republican VP choice is going down in flames! It is not only Sarah Palin's lack of knowledge on critical issues such as foreign policy (Sarah Palin stated that she has no opinion on the war in Iraq in a recent interview before he VP nomination), science and global warming (she does not believe it is real), etc. Now we found out that she does not even know what is going on in her own family! Maybe if Sarah Palin spent some time with her family she would be able to teach her daugther about the basic facts of pregnancy and how to avoid becoming pregnant as such an early age (the kid is really 16 not 17 as CNN states). The selection of Sarah Palin as VP is truly frightening!

Make no mistake – these rumors originated in ALASKA, not the so-called "liberal blogs". McCain can't pin the fall-out from thie revelation on anyone but himself. He has shown increadibly poor judgement in choosing Ms. Palin. A decision that may come back to hurt not just Sarah Palin, but the rest of her family as well. And that is a shame.

Timing of the announcement right in the middle of the hurricane? Well, it won't go unnoticed! This is nuts! What kind of fool is McCain? First, a pick of someone who is so unqualified it is laughable. Then we hear about trooper-gate and the investigation of Palin. Now this? A pregnant daughter of 17? If McCain wins now, I will have to move to another country!!!
