Sens. Biden and Obama campaigned together in Michigan Sunday.

(CNN) – If Sen. Joe Biden was hurt that Republican operative Karl Rove called him a “big blowhard doofus” at an event in Minneapolis Monday, he didn’t show it.

On hearing the news, Biden grinned and said “he’s a great American.”

The blog Politicker ME reports that at a Maine delegate breakfast at the Republican National Convention, Rove, the so-called “architect” of the Bush administration, called Biden a “big blowhard doofus.” Biden, the Democratic vice presidential nominee, is notorious in Washington for being talkative at Senate hearings.

Later, in response to a different question, Rove is reported to have asked "Is there press in this room?"

Biden addressed the criticism during a flight on his campaign plane Monday evening. A reporter asked if the senator would now answer to “Senator Doofus.”

“You can call me anything you want,” he said. “I learned a long time ago you can call me anything you want.”

Both political parties have made a point in recent days to draw down partisan rhetoric as Hurricane Gustav threatened the Gulf Coast. Biden said he would have no trouble drawing his sword in the weeks to come.

“I don’t think we’ll have any trouble resuming the campaign,” he said. “I guess Karl did it already. I guess he didn’t get the memo.”

Biden’s campaign spokesman quickly released a statement rebuking Rove for the comments.

“It’s more than a little sad that with another hurricane heading for the Gulf Coast, Karl Rove is up to the same old attack politics that he practically patented while helping dig a deep hole for our country to get out of,” said Biden Spokesman David Wade. “Americans deserve better, especially at a time like this.”

Tihs ticker item was covered ad nauseum yesterday so I'm not sure why it's being re-run, but this is hilarious. Rove calling Biden a big blowhard doofus? That's right, Rove, you just keep insulting Obama/Biden all the way to the White House and you're out of a job. Unfortunately though, I guess you'll always have a job cooking up sleazy campaigns for the "me, me, me GOP".

Alex   September 2nd, 2008 7:42 am ET

This is the thing that is so disheartening about the politics in our country and why there is such voter apathy. Karl Rove can claim some responsibility for the political issues and climate that has created all the tension and I hope that his is party continues to lose and lose big cause it appears that their platform is nothing but negativity and now childish name calling. I hope that there will be enough voters in this country that can move past their hang-ups about Baracks ethnicity and truly voter their conscious and do what they know is right. We can't afford to keep this up. The stakes are too high.

OBAMA\BIDEN 08

MrCharles   September 2nd, 2008 7:40 am ET

I have never been so proud of MY country. The more I read some of these comments the more I am caused to worry about where we're heading. Rove should be in jail and Bush should be impeached. How long are we going to be manipulated by these idiots. WAKE UP AMERICA!! Rove is not your friend!
But I forgot some of you still think the world is flat, slavery was a good thing and that the south will again. Rove only has power over those who listen to his BS and that seems to be a lot of you. Oh, by the way, It’s not, It wasn’t and when a very hot place freezes over.

JDF   September 2nd, 2008 7:40 am ET

Joe Biden in a great American. Karl's fear tactics aren't going to work this time.
With repect to McCain's vice presidental selection, McCain and his handlers have make a serious miscalculation. They believe the Hillary voters did so because Hilllary is a woman. They voted for Hillary because she reflected their polictial desires. Merely selecting any woman for the vice presidental nomination will not automatically change the Hillary vote. The Palin pick is a disaster. Certainly, it will not fit into McCain's fear brand of politics unless there might be Islamic terrorist caribou out there somewhere that Ms. Palin might shoot.
Karl Rove really needs to vote for Joe Biden. For once, it is actually in his and the country's best interest.

Joan   September 2nd, 2008 7:39 am ET

Karl Rove should be in prison.

Arizona Demo   September 2nd, 2008 7:39 am ET

Wow!!!! and Rove is credited with being the architect of Bush's administration. Pot calling kettle black???

xddy4u   September 2nd, 2008 7:39 am ET

Now that's experience Biden showed. Don't get caught up in no BS with the media. Be nice and screw them at the same time. Where was Carl Rove when Palin was picked? Or maybe yet, was her pick his suggestion? It the RNC can't use the restroom without asking for Carl Rove. What a bush of dim wits.

maddie   September 2nd, 2008 7:38 am ET

"Doofus"? I haven't heard that expression since I was in sixth grade!

Rick Short   September 2nd, 2008 7:37 am ET

When is everyone going to stop listening to Karl Rove???

LARRY THORNTON   September 2nd, 2008 7:36 am ET

Biden should feel that was a complement, coming from an unconviced felon like Karl Rove. He refuses an ORDER to come before Congress. NOW, who is the DOOFUS? He leaks the CIA operative and endangers her contacts all over the world. NOW who is the doofus? ENOUGH already of this unpatriotic idiot ROVE!

HillBillyBill   September 2nd, 2008 7:35 am ET

Rove would do well to remember that he bailed out of the Bush kitchen before it became too hot for him.
He's much less likely to be pardoned or have any sentence commutted now if anything comes of investigations still underway in some of the hijinks he was involved with.

DrEvil   September 2nd, 2008 7:35 am ET

As a doofus I am insulted by the comparison to Joe Biden.

yellowdoggie   September 2nd, 2008 7:34 am ET

Karl Rove has a lot of nerve calling anyone anything.

Ana   September 2nd, 2008 7:32 am ET

Biden earned this title, it it righteously his. He and Obama put a great show, but that's about it. Any circus will be glad to have them as employees.

give me a break   September 2nd, 2008 7:30 am ET

Do we really care what Karl Rove thinks? I don't think anyone at think point is sitting on the edge of their chair waiting for his next "brilliant" comment.

Vince   September 2nd, 2008 7:30 am ET

Karl Rove sounds a little upset that after all he did for the GOP, they are treating him like he has the plague. No one wants to be officially tied to him. He is a political disaster now. Good 8 year run buddy, but like the old quaterback, its time to sit and watch now.

Wynter   September 2nd, 2008 7:28 am ET

It's better than being referred to as "Turd Blossom" by the President. I wonder if he can sue for that moniker? Nah, it suits him.

Ryan S in KC   September 2nd, 2008 7:28 am ET

Wow, this is a pretty impressive example of a Republican politics.

They can't win on the issues this time, due to their ownership of the failed Bush Administration. They can't repeat their mantra of "smaller government," not after the expansion of executive power and the increasing encroachment upon Americans privacy. (Not to mention the back-door draft of sending the National Guard to fight an unpopular war.) Their own candidate can't be bothered to properly interview and fact check on his own VP.

They're desperate, and they should be.

Chris   September 2nd, 2008 7:28 am ET

Karl Rove should know what a "blowhard doofus" he has been surrounded by them for the last 8 years.

Blayze Kohime   September 2nd, 2008 7:27 am ET

Honestly someone like that even using the word 'doofus' is an insult to every Americans intelligent. Is that really the best argument Rove can think to make? Wow. Just… wow.

blowhard doofus   September 2nd, 2008 7:26 am ET

What do they say about pots and kettles?

CS in PA   September 2nd, 2008 7:24 am ET

Who cares what Rove thinks or says - we are living the mess he created every day - go away - the guy who should be in jail!

EBC   September 2nd, 2008 7:23 am ET

I KNOW Karl Rowe is NOT calling anyone "doofus" when clearly he's the scum bag who gives the word "doofus" a WHOLE NEW MEANING!!

I mean this is JUST another proof of how far the GOP and their surrogates will go. Karl Rowe, are you kidding me? That in itself should speak to the TRUE COLORS of John McCain's camp. All they every do is "attack" but they never comment on anything FACTUAL. Funny that huh?

NO one really CARES what Karl Rowe has to say, he needs to carry his ugly-no credit-doofus self back under a rock where he crawled out from.

alvino   September 2nd, 2008 7:23 am ET

Aside from the name calling, there is not much substance coming from the Republican Camp. Even the "age means experience" issue has no merit. John McCain had a failed marriage, chose to take an opposite (popular) position on offshore drilling, changed positions on his immigration plan, now supports Bush Tax Cuts after opposing them, and chose a vp on the spur of the moment without properly vetting to shore up his base. This is not basing judgement on experience, it is playing on the emotions of the electorate.

I would think America would prefer Obama's decision making ability.

mollygonz   September 2nd, 2008 7:22 am ET

Anything Rove has to say is irrelevant. Joe Biden should feel complemented that this man said something negative about him. Rove has absolutely no crediblity. It's funny how McSame's campaign tries to dishonestly display the high road technique and this worm comes out of the woodwork. So much for your high road! They have no right to say anything to the Obama campaign. I love Joe Biden. He is such a real and warm person. I have never seen a politician with such an honest personality. People say he is a gaffe machine but atleast he does not put on airs. Biden and Obama make such a good team. I'm sure the Democrats are pleased as i am!

Sue   September 2nd, 2008 7:22 am ET

Does Karl Rove's opinion matter anymore? I don't think so. Some people will say anything to hang on to their 15 minutes of fame.

molly   September 2nd, 2008 7:20 am ET

stay on the high road, let them swim in the mud

Jan Means   September 2nd, 2008 7:19 am ET

The statement by Rove is more true about him, than Senator Biden, the real "blowhard doofus" is Carl Rove. We ARE the words we say, or what you say is what you are. "Holding onto anger is like holding onto hot coals with the intention of throwing them, you ARE the one getting burned."

Jim   September 2nd, 2008 7:17 am ET

The psychologists call this "projection": In this case, doofus Rove–whose credentials are that he played dirty politics to get Bush appointed in 1980 and elected in 1984–hurls those words at the long-serving, distinguished Senator Biden. While Biden was visiting the president of Georgia recently, Rove was as usual somewhere in hiding, secretly plotting to get Obama swift-boated somehow.

Lee   September 2nd, 2008 7:16 am ET

Talk about the kettle calling the pot black.

fellis   September 2nd, 2008 7:16 am ET

Does this surprise anyone… the White House was run like a tree house… a bunch stupid little boys.

Roger   September 2nd, 2008 7:15 am ET

So much for Republican civility. The only "blowhard doofus" is the guy Rove helped put in the White House. Some little village in Texas is thankfully about to get its idiot back!!

Jim   September 2nd, 2008 7:15 am ET

Hey, Karl… Looked in a mirror lately?

docallen001   September 2nd, 2008 7:15 am ET

As Biden noted, guess Karl didn't hear that on Monday the Repubs were not going to be polictical but were going to be Americans. But I forgot Dems are suppose to play by the rules and the Repubs are above the rules.

PhilT   September 2nd, 2008 7:14 am ET

Is there press in the room?

There should be a "full court" press in the country to put this "great american" where he belongs, in the "big house".

Good riddance, Karl.

CJ   September 2nd, 2008 7:12 am ET

Yes. Keep the high road.

Mike   September 2nd, 2008 7:12 am ET

Rove is no genius in political strategy. He uses middle school-style politics which unfortunately seems to work in this country.

ricardo williams   September 2nd, 2008 7:12 am ET

And that my friends is a man of true character. That's why I am voting Democrats. I'm tired of Republicans calling people names and creating fear instead of focusing on the issues. Senator Biden is truly an admirable person and Obama has stepped up and run his campaign with integrity. Still waiting on John McCain to do the same.

PJ, New York Independent   September 2nd, 2008 7:10 am ET

Though I have no use for Karl Rove, I agree with his 'doofus' remark. Joe Biden is nothing but a loud mouth doofus who loves the media attention and himself!

He tried to run for president twice now, lost HUGELY both times. Now he's running with the (in his own words) guy who isn't fit to be president. Obama was voted the number one most liberal in Washington in 2007, Biden was named number 3 most liberal. Now they're both trying to win the White House. Good luck I say… In the end, the American people will not vote so far left, they never do and history has shown us that… Mondale, Dukakis, Kennedy, Gore, Kerry, etc. etc.

As if Obama doesn't have his own problems, he picks big mouth Biden, the 35 year+ liberal senator… even though Obama has been ramming down everyone's throats for well over a year now that we need to get away from Old Washington politics… CHANGE. LOL What a joke!

C.J. Cobb   September 2nd, 2008 7:07 am ET

The title of the article should be "Pot calls the kettle black"

Walt   September 2nd, 2008 7:03 am ET

In all of politics I have never seen a more doofy looking geek than Rove. If that ain't the kettle calling the pot black…

rainbowgirl   September 2nd, 2008 7:02 am ET

Does anyone take Karl Rove seriously? I'm glad CNN printed this article so we can confirm just how insignificant it is when Karl Rove speaks.

Independent Voter   September 2nd, 2008 7:00 am ET

So what has Karl Rove done for the regular working people in this country? When did he ever fight with for Unions, Civil rights, and affordable healthcare? Never! — I think the only blowhard is Rove.

Deborah Dean   September 2nd, 2008 7:00 am ET

Will someone please stuff a sock in Karl Rove's mouth and tell him to sit down and shut up! This man is responsible for more corruption and scandal than you can shake a stick at and has thumbed his nose at a United States Senate subpoena, yet he has the unmitigated gaul to call Joe Biden names. Karl Rove belongs in a jail cell and should keep his low-down, dirty, lying remarks to himself!

Chad   September 2nd, 2008 6:59 am ET

Oh yeah? Well Rove is a "big dummy." lol Name calling. The political 'master' resorting to childish insults.

GPENN   September 2nd, 2008 6:59 am ET

Carl Rove is a hack. He belongs in jail. He is what's wrong with the Politics of this country.

Adrian Veidt   September 2nd, 2008 6:59 am ET

Wait… *Karl Rove* called someone a blowhard?

HAHA!

a.j.cornelese   September 2nd, 2008 6:57 am ET

As far as I am informed mr Rove left , with other "unable seamen" , the sinking ship of state trying to save his butt. Now , from the safe shore , he is throwing names at others . Brave man .

williefloyd   September 2nd, 2008 6:57 am ET

"Blowhard Doofus" is a lot better than some of the names I've heard used to describe Rove. At least Statesman Biden is an honest and respected Blowhard Doofus!! Two words I would never use for Carl Rove!!
This will possibly be my last post on this site, as my last 3 comments haven't been posted-too anti McCain I suppose.
I am continually disappointed by the sleazy and hateful remarks made by some people. America is not a land of hate-we are known worldwide for coming together in a crisis. It is one thing to disagree and argue issues-it is something else to attack individuals personally.
I am at a loss for words to describe how I feel about McCains' choice of Sarah Palin. It has shown a total disregard for the safety & welfare of our nation. What a price to pay for a handful of votes! It is quite obvious that she is not prepared to step into the presidency. This was to have been McCains' first consideration according to his previous statement. By making the choice he has made, not only does it show that Palin is not qualified to be president, it shows that with his judgement in making this choice, neither is he.
In case you didn't pick up on my opening statement-I'm fiercely loyal to Joe Biden and don't appreciate criticisms of him.

OBAMA/BIDEN

Stephen Russell   September 2nd, 2008 6:54 am ET

Why does CNN even dignify this remark with a story? When Joe Biden weighs in on a Senate hearing, he's doing the job he was elected to do by the good people of Delaware. Who ever elected Karl Rove to anything? I am so tired of hearing about this back-room bozo. Someone should wash his mouth out with soap. There's certainly not enough soap in the world to wash all the blood from his hands.

Bill Tampa   September 2nd, 2008 6:54 am ET

Joe's comment was worthy of a Karl Rove comment.

Chi Okpareke   September 2nd, 2008 6:53 am ET

That Karl Rove is still being listened to after the havoc he has unleashed on America is disturbing. The guy has shown he will say or do anything to further his shady causes. I applaud Senator Joe Biden's response…just ignore the shady Rove

RDW - TEXAS   September 2nd, 2008 6:52 am ET

I guess Rove should know one when he sees one since he worked for the king Doofus for several years.

Alex, USMC   September 2nd, 2008 6:52 am ET

Well handled. A rebuke on the attack without an accompanying attack…at least from Biden directly. I don't think the spokesman should have said anything other than repeat what Biden said.

James - Atlanta   September 2nd, 2008 6:51 am ET

Rove is using the same old tactics that got Bush elected. He is the doofus because the American people are tired of partisan politics. Young Americans, in particular, have grown up and we don't care about his blow hard statements. I beliieve that most Americans are looking towards the future with change on their minds. and will reject Carl Roves negative and partisan politics. We are all Americans, not just the Carl Rove "Blow Hard" Republicans.

Willy   September 2nd, 2008 6:51 am ET

I agree

Pamala Brooks-Hawthorne, Ca   September 2nd, 2008 6:51 am ET

I think this is just a minor tit for tat that the media is attempting to get started. I mean, why else would the reporter ask Mr. Biden if he would respond to "Senator Doofus"? I think it is petty and immature for that type of comment to even get any recognition. There are more important things to focus on right now.

I have a question for Mr. Rove: "Why haven't you answered your court subpena(s)"?

Akinkugbe tunde   September 2nd, 2008 6:50 am ET

I think barack obama has made the right choice in Joe baden but sen macCain choice of palin may slightly hurt him.the election will be close but sen. obama will emerge the winner.

Jeff Spangler, Arlington, VA   September 2nd, 2008 6:50 am ET

An expert opinion by Rove, who knows one when he sees one– of his own ilk.

Glenn H.; Bakersville, NC.   September 2nd, 2008 6:47 am ET

The Republican's will have to do ALOT better than that to shake this guy. That's why he's going to make such a good VP.

Mark Andrews   September 2nd, 2008 6:45 am ET

Karl Rove called Joe Biden a "big, blowhard doofus." Well it takes one to know one.

Stephen, Bedford, TX   September 2nd, 2008 6:44 am ET

Karl must be angry that he's been proven wrong so many times. If he resorts to calling popular and powerful senators names he must be scared that the democrats will completely wipe away all republican gains of the last four years.

Brian   September 2nd, 2008 6:38 am ET

okay you reported it, please just once refer to him in an article as “Senator Doofus.” He said it was okay! Make it a headline, just once.

tommaso   September 2nd, 2008 6:37 am ET

jesusbaysis   September 2nd, 2008 6:35 am ET

Glad we are trying to raise the level of debate and civility. Rove is a jerk.

Fred Cuborn   September 2nd, 2008 6:31 am ET

Rove or what is his name, you should try to understand that in this millenium we need the teachings of his majesty (Democrat) and we no want republican devilish philosophy.

Obama / Biden 08

Osric   September 2nd, 2008 6:31 am ET

Karl Rove gave America one of the most popular Presidents of all times, George W. Now he is offering John McSame. Is it really the economy that is sometime stupid. I doubt it. Biden is not rich according to McSame standard. When his completes his first term, America will be hundred of trillion dollars in debt, fighting three wars. Americans and more people steep in poverity than India. America deserves better but for now they will only whin and vote Karl Rove /McCain. they simply love that guy!

Bruce, Middlesex, NY   September 2nd, 2008 6:30 am ET

And he will continue to say things like this as long as the MEDIA gives him an ear. The only thing Karl Rove does is pander to the conservative crowd and tries to get a rise out of everyone else. If there weren't anyone to hear him, would he still say it? I would venture to guess that he wouldn't.

Justin   September 2nd, 2008 6:30 am ET

Again, Karl Rove is simply telling THE TRUTH!

Michigan Voter   September 2nd, 2008 6:29 am ET

Karl obviously feels threatened by Biden, or has run out of ideas to whip up his radical right constituency. As he steps into his advisory role with McCain, Rove's finding the pickin's in his quiver mighty slim. Lack of ideas that work will do that.

Dorian in NC   September 2nd, 2008 6:28 am ET

Wow!! A Pathetic Excuse For An American…

Rove (1) Gave damaging information about a CIA agent that blew her cover and put her in danger, all because of personal vengeance, and (2) Was responsible for electing the worst American President in history (by making him seem smarter than he really was…a lot smarter).

Only in America…

Chris   September 2nd, 2008 6:27 am ET

"Kettle - Black"?? hahahah
unreal

SAB   September 2nd, 2008 6:25 am ET

The nerve of Karl Rove. How can he call any one a name. Joe Biden is a respected elected official. Joe Biden has served his country well. The same can not be said about Karl Rove. Karl Rove is a slime ball.

scott,manchester NH   September 2nd, 2008 6:21 am ET

the ONLY thing Rove is really any kind of architect of is THE MOST disgusting and obnoxious presidency in history….
America is left to fix the enormous mess and pick up the pieces from Bush and Co., who have proven themselves to be nothing more than human garbage.

The Repubican party is becoming the party of school yard children. I just do not understand them. McCain tells us how awful the current admin is and that the last 8 years have been terrible. Then asks us to vote Republican.

Steve   September 2nd, 2008 6:01 am ET

It is ironic that whenever somebody resorts to name calling, they end up looking really bad themselves.

East Coast Bum   September 2nd, 2008 5:59 am ET

Typical GOP tactics, our platform is outdated and we know it so we will resort to petty name calling. I am so tired of this, I want an effect goverement and playground name calling aint it!!

The audacity of such a criminal insulting someone when he should be locked up.

Pathetic Republicans, wrong about everything under the sun. Just admit when your wrong, and we'd atleast respect you. Cant even give them that.

Lia Redegeld   September 2nd, 2008 5:52 am ET

Look who's talking. Mr. Garbage himself. Over and over again this man shows he has no dignity. Is there no law that makes people like Karl Rove shut their filthy mouth? That Rove figure brought a lot of damage, not only to America, but to the world. This man sadled the world with George W. Bush and look how we're doing. Thanks to Rove and the Bush administration America is no longer the superpower it ones was. And mark my words: If McCain is going to be president, America will be a third world country. All the money will be needed to make war. The new superpowers will be: China, India and Russia. Oh, and mr. Biden: you really are a man of honour. No reaction is the only way to treat these inferior creatures.

Tom in Delaware   September 2nd, 2008 5:42 am ET

I've been trying to find an appropriate nickname for Joe Biden since 1972….looks like my search is over.

Why does anyone give Karl Rove any credence whatsoever? Perhaps the doofuses are those who follow his marketing advice, and disregard ethics and the Constitution. Or perhaps they're the ones who give him any press at all. Do the Nation a favor, leave his opinion, corrupt and as ignorant as ever, out of every commentary he tries to access.

K of TX   September 2nd, 2008 5:42 am ET

Karl Rove should be put in prison. PERIOD.

As for the people who are touting the Republican talking point that Palin has more experience than Sen. Obama, read this for yourself and stop being puppets…

Wow Karl.

You should know "doofus" if anyone should, seeing as how you were the "architect" responsible for putting one into the White House over the last 8 years. You saw the "doofus" in the many people who bought this guy and was therefore able to sell your "doofus" to them. GENIOUS!

"Fool me once….". How does that go again?????

Andrew   September 2nd, 2008 5:15 am ET

Well, we've known since at least the Clinton years Rove is immoral and immature.

Dave   September 2nd, 2008 5:14 am ET

Karl Rove? A Guy who, if his protector President would ever let him be tried, would be convicted of the same thing Scooter Libby was before President Doofus pardons him? Karl Rove? The same guy who is above testifying under oath in front of the Senate and who, if subpoenaed to testify would run to President Doofus to avoid having to testify? But Biden IS a big blowhard doofus…

Common Sense!   September 2nd, 2008 5:05 am ET

Rove's comment is typical Rove. He is in the distinct minority that loves Bush and Cheney.

I am proud that Biden did not react to the Rove insult by calling him a draft dodging, unpatriotic jerk that avoided Viet Nam just as Bush, Cheney, and Rumsfeld did.

Oh yeah; a guy with a nickname "Turd blossom" has a lot of room to go making comments like that!

Rove is yesterday's news…

The Bush Twins : George and John   September 2nd, 2008 4:59 am ET

I love you Joe !!. You take the high road just as Sen. Obama would.

Karl Rove, just the mention of this jerks name and everybody thinks "lowlife scumbag". I'll bet he was the kid that always got picked on in school. Crawl back in your hole Rove.
