Biden reacts to Rove insult

Sens. Biden and Obama campaigned together in Michigan Sunday.
Sens. Biden and Obama campaigned together in Michigan Sunday.

(CNN) – If Sen. Joe Biden was hurt that Republican operative Karl Rove called him a “big blowhard doofus” at an event in Minneapolis Monday, he didn’t show it.

On hearing the news, Biden grinned and said “he’s a great American.”

The blog Politicker ME reports that at a Maine delegate breakfast at the Republican National Convention, Rove, the so-called “architect” of the Bush administration, called Biden a “big blowhard doofus.” Biden, the Democratic vice presidential nominee, is notorious in Washington for being talkative at Senate hearings.

Later, in response to a different question, Rove is reported to have asked "Is there press in this room?"

Biden addressed the criticism during a flight on his campaign plane Monday evening. A reporter asked if the senator would now answer to “Senator Doofus.”

“You can call me anything you want,” he said. “I learned a long time ago you can call me anything you want.”

Both political parties have made a point in recent days to draw down partisan rhetoric as Hurricane Gustav threatened the Gulf Coast. Biden said he would have no trouble drawing his sword in the weeks to come.

“I don’t think we’ll have any trouble resuming the campaign,” he said. “I guess Karl did it already. I guess he didn’t get the memo.”

Biden’s campaign spokesman quickly released a statement rebuking Rove for the comments.

“It’s more than a little sad that with another hurricane heading for the Gulf Coast, Karl Rove is up to the same old attack politics that he practically patented while helping dig a deep hole for our country to get out of,” said Biden Spokesman David Wade. “Americans deserve better, especially at a time like this.”

The Repubican party is becoming the party of school yard children. I just do not understand them. McCain tells us how awful the current admin is and that the last 8 years have been terrible. Then asks us to vote Republican.

the ONLY thing Rove is really any kind of architect of is THE MOST disgusting and obnoxious presidency in history....
America is left to fix the enormous mess and pick up the pieces from Bush and Co., who have proven themselves to be nothing more than human garbage.

The nerve of Karl Rove. How can he call any one a name. Joe Biden is a respected elected official. Joe Biden has served his country well. The same can not be said about Karl Rove. Karl Rove is a slime ball.

Wow!! A Pathetic Excuse For An American...

Rove (1) Gave damaging information about a CIA agent that blew her cover and put her in danger, all because of personal vengeance, and (2) Was responsible for electing the worst American President in history (by making him seem smarter than he really was...a lot smarter).

    Only in America...

Karl obviously feels threatened by Biden, or has run out of ideas to whip up his radical right constituency. As he steps into his advisory role with McCain, Rove's finding the pickin's in his quiver mighty slim. Lack of ideas that work will do that.

And he will continue to say things like this as long as the MEDIA gives him an ear. The only thing Karl Rove does is pander to the conservative crowd and tries to get a rise out of everyone else. If there weren't anyone to hear him, would he still say it? I would venture to guess that he wouldn't.

Karl Rove gave America one of the most popular Presidents of all times, George W. Now he is offering John McSame. Is it really the economy that is sometime stupid. I doubt it. Biden is not rich according to McSame standard. When his completes his first term, America will be hundred of trillion dollars in debt, fighting three wars. Americans and more people steep in poverity than India. America deserves better but for now they will only whin and vote Karl Rove /McCain. they simply love that guy!

Karl must be angry that he's been proven wrong so many times. If he resorts to calling popular and powerful senators names he must be scared that the democrats will completely wipe away all republican gains of the last four years.

I think this is just a minor tit for tat that the media is attempting to get started. I mean, why else would the reporter ask Mr. Biden if he would respond to "Senator Doofus"? I think it is petty and immature for that type of comment to even get any recognition. There are more important things to focus on right now.

I have a question for Mr. Rove: "Why haven't you answered your court subpena(s)"?
