The Bushes received a standing ovation at the RNC tonight.

George H.W. Bush (the Dad) and Barbara Bush just walked into the auditorium of the Republican National Convention and got a standing ovation.

They'll soon listen to their son, slated to beam in via satellite from the White House.

Next up, a first responder to the Minneapolis bridge collapse last year. They are currently showing video of her crawling into a partially submerged car.

NO REPUBLICANS. NOT THIS TIME.

NOT THIS YEAR.

What a Joke   September 2nd, 2008 9:52 pm ET

Is it April fools already? Try posting relevant news CNN.

conrad pait   September 2nd, 2008 9:51 pm ET

I just listen to wolf blitzer talking about McClain's experience as a POW, about being offered his release and turning it down—- what a brave thing to do, however later he signed a confession, but this little tidbit is never spoken about. Isn't it wonderful when the media can add to or leave out little things which may or may not change one's views of the man. Then the media has the nerve to advise everyone to learn all they can about a candiate in order to made a good decision as to whon to vote for.

Don't mis-understand, I have utmost respect for what the man endured.

Bob   September 2nd, 2008 9:50 pm ET

I applaud Bush senoir too. He was smart enough to listen to Colin Powell and not get bogged down in the Iraq quagmire. Unfortunatly this Bush listened to Cheney and has cost us over 4000 young lives and a trillion Dollars for nothing! And McBush has guaranteed more of the same.

sue   September 2nd, 2008 9:50 pm ET

Is it just me-or does that crowd look very very white–it is coming off very Neo-_____?

Eric   September 2nd, 2008 9:50 pm ET

Typical Republican party DENIAL!!!! Republicans have had 8 yrs to prove themselves and have done absolutely nothing but run this country down.

brewme   September 2nd, 2008 9:49 pm ET

Hate, hate, hate. You clowns can only spew hate. Look at the facts. We are safer now than we were in 2001. Clinton allowed the terrorists to build up and attack the US with his lack of initiative against them. Dems, get a clue the only security candidate is McCain. Wise up and get on the wagon….

Timothy   September 2nd, 2008 9:49 pm ET

Look at them, all standing, grinning, wallowing in the fact that they are
proud to have had our sons and daughters killed in a war that never
should have occurred and in the wrong country. Pathetic.

Vin Texas   September 2nd, 2008 9:49 pm ET

Lots of empty seats.

If they had paid, I would have goneto fill one seat ….NOT!!

American Patriot   September 2nd, 2008 9:49 pm ET

"But I find it galling that apparently the McCain camp thinks that only Republicans put their "country first", and that the only way to put "country first" is by serving in the military. That is an offense to millions of patriots across our nation."

Well, I don't see where McCain said only Republicans put "country first"…it's just their new campaign slogan…and its the RNC…

but seriously, can you think of a better way to serve the country that to put your own life on the line? how do you think we gained independence from England? by negotiating with his Majesty?
no, we had individual farmers and workers take up arms in the name of freedom. How can you marginalize what our men and women in uniform did and are doing?

Barbara   September 2nd, 2008 9:49 pm ET

ha ha ha ha she almost gagged on those words - omg.

Tom   September 2nd, 2008 9:48 pm ET

Its is amazing, as I look into the repubs crowd I don't see the face of America. All I see is elitism. After hearing all the hierocracy concerning the leadership question and the coverup of immorality. I am now convinced that these people are no more than a cult.

This crowd is nuts … they should instead be giving a standing applause to Sarah Pawlenty everyday of the convention

Barbara   September 2nd, 2008 9:47 pm ET

An inept hot-dog pilot is not a hero - he was a danger to others and he was (and still is) reckless !!!!!!!!

War, war, war   September 2nd, 2008 9:46 pm ET

So far this Republican convention is stuck on another unpopular war - Vietnam. What are McCain's and Palen's plans for the economy, education, getting us out of this dreadful war. They don't have a clue.
No way, no how, no McCain.

Obama and Biden - 08 and 12

Texas Teacher   September 2nd, 2008 9:45 pm ET

Face it, the Republican party is the past. All you have to do is look over that crowd. More of the same is all they have to offer. Is this what America wants? I don't think so. Eight IS enough.

Xavier   September 2nd, 2008 9:45 pm ET

The fat lady is warming up her vocal cords. The republican reign of terror is coming to an end.

myself   September 2nd, 2008 9:45 pm ET

wow, you guys are crazy…so many people for obama…do you realize what he will do to our country?…i am in the military right now, active duty, just so happen to be stationed in alaska. Palin has done a good job up here, not that anyone else would know because half of you heard her name and didn't know who it was. I was lucky enough to be exposed to alaskan politics so i had some knowledge when mccain chose her as his running mate. I don't want to be dissrepectful but you people should probably do some research instead of listening to everything from one news station, the one you prefer. You prefer that station because it only states what you want to hear.

But back to politics…mccain will take care of the war, and trust me, most of us in the military want to be in iraq, i can't wait until my next deployment…it's not so bad and it gives us a sense of purpose. If you support your troops and your country, i suggest you vote mccain.

Has Tucker 'Purse-Swinger' Bound recovered from the whipping the fill-in Today show host gave him.

Seam, Philly   September 2nd, 2008 9:45 pm ET

Is that a picture of McCains aunt and uncle?

KCBob   September 2nd, 2008 9:45 pm ET

This convention is a joke. They are not talking about any issues what so ever…all pandering to the military and crist cultists.

Guess I can't blame them though looking at the last 8 years the only thing I would listen to is an apology to the nation. If McCain did that on behalf of the GOP then I would think he was sincere.

Suzy   September 2nd, 2008 9:45 pm ET

You guys need to be upfront with the Republicans and tell them the real poll findings you would not have protestors outside the RNC if this was a close race. You have more people outside of the convention than inside. McCain should just throw in the towel and vote for Obama. This convention hasn't symbolized anything but more lies that they are reading from a teleprompter. Boring!!!!!

Brad   September 2nd, 2008 9:44 pm ET

War, war, war.

How about some peace of mind!

Proud Democrat   September 2nd, 2008 9:44 pm ET

shakinginmyboots   September 2nd, 2008 9:44 pm ET

I never thought I'd say these words - but the McCain Palin ticket actually has me feeling nostalgia for the Bush family - good old Babs and George. I knew where I stood with them. Even Bush and Cheney.

Yikes.

I hope college kids aren't inventing drinking games over this.

gene   September 2nd, 2008 9:42 pm ET

To Eric

That was the greatest interview ever! That guy was asked for 1 important decision that Palin made in regards to the national guard… after he started talking about her leadership with the national guard… and he just stumbled and went in circles.

Even the reporter was like "uh… ok… i guess I'll just let you have this one".. basically saying "uhh.. you're a moron"

Now as far as Bush Sr… he was an 'ok' president… definitely much better than his retarded son.

Sarah Palin = Phyllis Schlafley   September 2nd, 2008 9:42 pm ET

Superb military service to our country is fabulous, but the Republicans make it almost a necessary to be an American.

I much prefer a strong military and a strong president who is willing to talk peace as the first step.

Now it seems you have to have spent 5-1/2 years in Hanoi Hilton to qualify to be a man.

Michele/Oregon   September 2nd, 2008 9:42 pm ET

Kyle: keep asking the right questions!!!!! Why isn't the MSM reporting on these things? Who have they sold out to??? This is our country we are talking about! Come on CNN!!!!

Ryan in MO   September 2nd, 2008 9:42 pm ET

Gimme a break. This is pathetic. This entire convention is going on and on about military service. I seriously thought there would be a little more substance than this, but, this is pitiful.

Obama - Biden 08,12

Reese of NC   September 2nd, 2008 9:41 pm ET

I am trying to be open to both sides but this convention is boring as HELL!!!!!!!! Please RNC try to make this a little interesting.

P.S. Nice to see a former President respected. I wish that same treamtent was granted to President Carter.

Seam, Philly   September 2nd, 2008 9:41 pm ET

This convention is a snooze fest. All these old people celebrating war heroes from 60 years ago.

Mike R. California   September 2nd, 2008 9:41 pm ET

Wishful thinking, all you liberals. Keep pumping yourselves up and trying to bring people down by reiterating naive statements over and over until you're blue in the face.

Fact: W has extremely low approval rating, economy somewhat teetering, war in Iraq, etc., etc., etc.! Why the heck is Obama not crushing McCain? He should be but he's not.

Be afraid.

Sadly, women’s' activist groups are only activist for liberal minded women. So much for equality you hypocrites (you know who you are).

For the same reason (sadly) many people will go to the polls, in the privacy afforded us as citizens of this GREAT country, and decide they just can't put an African American in office.

Admit to yourselves that it is Obama who made the

HUGE mistake by choosing an old school, run of the mill, pork barrel pushing, Washington Good Ol' Boy insider after he platformed himself on truly changing the way business is done.

Also, remember that it is Obama and McCain who are the potential presidents here, not the VPs. Each of the VP prospects will more than likely serve their terms in relative obscurity like nearly every other VP before them. If the unusual takes place, likely they will have been in Washington and tasking around the globe long enough to be very familiar with what is going on.

It's disgusting to cry and whine all these months about racism and reverse racism and all the ridiculous baloney that happened during the primaries (remember race issues and your dearly beloved Bill Clinton?), and then go on to instantly attack a person you really don't even know yet.

You do it because it caught you and the dem chiefs off guard and you're afraid.

Sarah Palin appears to be a person who has been quite successful at everything she has done in life thus far. You don't want to hear that because you are afraid she is, in fact, that person.

Elen up above takes the cake for stupidity. She puts forth the argument that Sarah is a horrible mother for running for VP because it exposes her pregnant daughter to scrutiny. You're a real thinker, lady!

I'd be willing to bet that each member of her family is overjoyed and proud for Sarah. They know her, you don't.

stay at home mom in ohio   September 2nd, 2008 9:41 pm ET

Unfortunately, former President Bush will get the biggest applause of the night. If McCain-Palin lose this election it will be due to the current president. For example, this morning he had a great opportunity to talk to the residents of the gulf coast and how much the federal, state and local agencies were doing to offset the castrophe of 3 years ago…but what did President Bush do? He didn't say a darn thing about the people, but turned his comments into a referendum on off-shore drilling.???? Not that there is anything wrong with getting your message across…but there is something called a time and a place….and dear Mr. President…this wasn't it!!! Get real and try to HELP Mc Cain-Palin instead of ambush them with your antics!!!

Anonymous   September 2nd, 2008 9:41 pm ET

Scared to go to the convention

Helen Hahn   September 2nd, 2008 9:40 pm ET

I believe Sarah Palin should put her political ambitions on hold until all of her children are raised. Having had five children myself and a job the stress was great even with a very supportive husband. I do not believe she can do her best at either job at this point in her life. She is already under stress with a downs sydrome child who will need all the love he can get and a pregnant daughter who from what I'm hearing from the press maybe shouldn't marry the father of her baby.

Virginia Voter   September 2nd, 2008 9:39 pm ET

George Sr. and Barbara look good and healthy. Good to see them in good spirits.

Still, that doesn't save the fact that McCain/Palin is the worst ticket in the history of governments.

War, war, war   September 2nd, 2008 9:39 pm ET

"No new taxes". How fast this country forgets.

So far this convention has me convinced that McCain is stuck in the past and is only focused on war, war, war.

A verb, a noun and POW. I'm scared.
Obama & Biden '08 and '12 - No more war (unless it's proven necessary)

Kyle   September 2nd, 2008 9:39 pm ET

Dumb democrats, they want to bash our convention. So lets bash theres! Why did Obama have to use his celebrity status and have money spent for such an eleaborte stage? That money could have went to the poor. At least the GOP had fundraiseing for the hurricane. Would the DEMS have cut their convention? No way No how!

Lydia Tanaka   September 2nd, 2008 9:39 pm ET

I AM THRILLED TO SEE FORMER PRESIDENT BUSH AND BARBARA BUSH AT THE CONVENTION TO SUPPORT THEIR SON.

I AM ALSO VERY EXCITED ABOUT JOHN MC CAIN'S SELECTION OF SARAH PALIN AS HIS RUNNING MATE. WHEN I HEARD HER TALK LAST WEEK, MY HEART SKIPPED A BEAT. I HAVE A GOOD FEELING ABOUT THIS ELECTION.

I thought it was incredibly rude for the Bushes to walk in right after the speaker had walked up to the podium. I guess the idea that they were interrupting never crossed Babs' "beautiful mind".

On a side note.

McCain opposed funds for teen-pregnancy prevention programs.

Michele/Oregon   September 2nd, 2008 9:38 pm ET

All fine and good but has anyone else noted that with the exception of a very few people, the crowd is very WASPish?

Just a white middle-aged woman who thinks that the Democrats serve their country as well as the Republicans. Why has no one reported that McCain would not see the Vets against the Iraq war? Why has no one reported that McCain has not voted for help for Katrina victims while they show McCain preparing help bags for Gustav? As usual the McCain camp is attempting to sway us with gushy patriotic military stories, but NO ONE is talking about his poor record to actually help g.i.'s in the form of benefits!

Bulldog   September 2nd, 2008 9:37 pm ET

People keep talking about Palin's exectutive experience. She governed the 3rd from last smallest state for 1.5 years while Obama was running a National campaign for the same amount of time. Obama was well received by foreign leaders all over the world while Palin has never met with any other country's leader. Obama was a United States Constitutional professor, does Palin even know the Constitution?
Obama is a Harvard graduate and first black person to be president of the Harvard Law Review (leadership). Palin graduated from a small college with a degree in journalism and worked as a sports reporter. Obama worked as a community organizer right out of college and helped organize much needed help for the less needy. Palin owned a small fishing store in Alaska. On and on and on.

Obama has excellent experience, was President of Harvard Law Review, chose to be a community organizer over going to Wall Street, and was a Constitutional professor before he ever even ran for state senate. God knows this country needs someone who understands the constitution. The experience argument against Obama is getting very old. He has tons of experience, just not in Washington. He definately has more relevant experience than Palin.

Terri   September 2nd, 2008 9:37 pm ET

Wow did anyone else see all the diversity in the audience?? LOL

Common Sense   September 2nd, 2008 9:37 pm ET

The apple doesn't fall to far from the tree. Bush Sr. just disguised he a lot better!

Texas   September 2nd, 2008 9:36 pm ET

I, personally, am glad to see that Republicans are questioning McCain's choice for VP. I'm a teacher. I don't get to spend all day following the events in the campaign. Every time I turn on the news, another bit of unsavory information comes out about Palin. I don't think that McCain knew much about his VP pick. And if this is the way he makes decisions… without finding out all about the person before choosing… then his ability to run this country should be under question.

I don't think anyone questions McCain's patrotism. But being a POW does not prepare one for President. And that seems to be what McCain relies on. He agreed with Bush policies over 90% of the time.

McCain is still more of the same. Just as Palin follows all the party lines including stand on abortion, creationism, etc. Not to mention the abuse of power issue. Is this what America really wants?

It seems like John King and Anderson Cooper are not constantly bringing the other side of the game - The Democratic Party side as they did during the Denver Convention.

Last week, they kept reminding us what republicans will say to counter the Democrats but today it's all out love for republicans. Almost everything is shown (including the christian singer? are you serious?)

By the way, what happened to bringing negative ads of the opponent? Last week we were shown alot of Republicans negative ads, I know Obama has some ads out there.

Very unfair to Obama from the media

Ward   September 2nd, 2008 9:32 pm ET

Kyle   September 2nd, 2008 9:31 pm ET

Wow CNN….best political team ever, right? But you won't say a word about Amy Goodman and her staff getting beat up and arrested at the RNC. We are not talking about anarchists here. We are talking about the peaceful, loving, patriotic Amy Goodman who fights for freedom everyday of her life. Come on CNN, this is news and people need to know what is happening.

BTW, I am a veteran and I am disgusted by the Republican exploitation of my fellow veterans and service members during their convention. What if the Democratics did the same? Hypocracy reigns tonight.

David Gergen is wrong about the 3 goals of the convention. At this point there should only be 1 goal… to keep the people watching the convention awake.

Look into the crowd and what do you see missing from this convention that was so noticeable at the Democratic convention! A minority presence. I am a white male, ex Republican. I look into the convention, and it's scary to see all those that are talking "Country First", and I look at a place that is all white. There are the token minorities in the crowd (I guess you could call them Palinites– those out in the open to appease others). We are a very diverse nation, and this convention doesn't reflect one.

The tribute to President Bush 41 was very nice. But I find it galling that apparently the McCain camp thinks that only Republicans put their "country first", and that the only way to put "country first" is by serving in the military. That is an offense to millions of patriots across our nation.

Peter of Oregon   September 2nd, 2008 9:24 pm ET

It's a Bush/McCain crowd. Don't be surprised by the ovation.

Lance   September 2nd, 2008 9:23 pm ET

Bush and McCain and Palin, all will get standing ovations, and the people cheering loudest will be the oil lobby, the Carlyle group that Bush Sr. chairs as he sells weapons to third world countries around the globe, and maybe the people of Wasilla, population 6500, who are still waiting to recieve the 27 million in earmarks that Sarah Barracuda got for them a couple years back.

Oh yes, they'll all get standing ovations, as long as the oil flows.

If the oil stops flowing, they'll just start another war, or secede from the Union the way The Palins wanted to.

I'm so tired of unpatriotric anti American right wing zealots like Palin and I'm tired of the bad judgement that McCain and Bush have both used to put political interest ahead of country.

I want an American for President. I want Barack Obama.

Eric   September 2nd, 2008 9:17 pm ET

Hey CNN, why don't you talk about McCain cancelling King's interview tonight, because he did not like his "Tucker" being asked a single question. This reminds me more and more of USSR in the 60ies. This country is getting down right scary when journalists can not even ask questions.

As usual, my comment won't be posted.
