Republicans are handing out homemade signs.
Republicans are handing out homemade signs.

Hurricane Gustaf turned out to be less a disaster than originally thought, so things are finally under way at the 2008 Republican Convention.

It's a pretty full arena for an opening night but a different crowd than the Democratic Convention: more ties, fewer crazy hats, and less milling around while the speakers speak.

The party has been passing out "homemade signs," mass produced by volunteers with paintbrushes and poster boards.

Machine produced signs at the ready in every floor seat reading "Country First."

Hey, texas Dem Hiilary supporter: can you spell "Supreme Court Nominee?"

HOORAH   September 2nd, 2008 8:47 pm ET

Here Here REP. these are certaintly the puppets of the Liberal Media I cannot believe how we can call ourselves Americans and and call our country the land of opportunity and yet try to destroy a person and her family without allowing her the benefit of the doubt.

Doubt the Media has created because they were not informed first or made part of the vetting process get over it people start thinking for yourselves listen whith your hearts learn to discern and don't just be parrots repeating everything the media feeds you.

Can you not plainly see that the media has nothing good to say about anybody they do not support ? They ultimately decide what or who gets accepted . they don't even respect the one canidate they support i.e. Senator obama instructed them not to mess with the family, but the media keeps spewing the poison out there in hopes that the parrots and ignorant that cannot think for themselves will run with it and hopefully spread the poison. YOU HAVE BEEN BITTEN !

Ken AZ   September 2nd, 2008 8:45 pm ET

They could of found someone a little more inspiring to sing The National Anthem. He sounded off tune at certain points. Not a very diversed crowd either.

Bill Pettingill   September 2nd, 2008 8:45 pm ET

The convention kicks off with not all the facts getting aired. I have sent in verifiable facts (Alaska Daily News, CBS) on Palin's radio talk show appearance in which she laughed at personal, vile attacks on a political opponent and her earlier position on the "bridge to nowhere" — and CNN has refused to allow them here in comments, meanwhile comments such as "Wasn't Palin the chick on the van halen video hot for teacher?" are allowed. What;s the deal?

YesWeCan   September 2nd, 2008 8:44 pm ET

I found it odd through that introductory video showing a picture of Martin Luther King when McCain opposed and wanted to rescind the Holiday. I don't see how this man is going to be able to separate himself from GWB when he has voted 90% of the time with him, is eager to go to war..I can hardly believe that I am saying this , but as much as I do not care for Bush, if it came down only between him and McCain, I would vote for Bush anyday.

Republican making a run for it!!!   September 2nd, 2008 8:44 pm ET

This convention is all fluff. They are not talking about the mess the housing market is in or the multiple wars we are in. They are talking about adopting kids and stuff like that, and do not get me wrong I have adopted brothers and sisters that I love very much, but adopting kids will not fix the housing market for millions and millions of people nor will it shed light on the multiple wars we are currently in right now. Being enlightened and wealthy are great but when you lose sight of your brothers plight is where you need to be careful. This guy picks his veep on the hopes that controvesy will create a rallying around him, but he forgot to consider what will happen if he wins. What happens if he goes down for what ever reason.

The simple fact is that the Republicas are attempting to formulate a vision as a party vested in the American Publics intrest, as over the two election have been very disappointed to see it has no intrest in serving the GOOD of the popular oppinion and wants. This war is a travesty. I am not opposed to the sevice men of which serve their comapny I am questioning their commanders and the leaders of the country who make our service men and women loose their limbs and lives for over 2000 years of the status quo of the Middle East. We have forced democracy and Bush and his cabnet have made fortunes off of the lives of thousands of service men and women. They have completely forgot that their office exist to serve the people of the United States not to act as a dictator McCain will only enforce a false sence of the US needing to continue to maintain its WAR effort, Obama can implement the numerous possitive plans propossed if the MILTARY wasn't spending 3 BILLION per month financing a useless war. McCain has no clue about what the real America is he is in the 5% of wealth and our sons and daughter willcontinue to loose limbs, we will continue to have our homes devalued and forclosures will continue to mount, and the US will continue to go broke at the hands of the Sons of Bush and his one way thinking and total lack of consideration for the American people he states he looks out for, If McCain has the view of Bush we are doomed to endure another 4 years of nothingness America Wake Up we need change and MCcain isn't it a new face with the same insides.

Candy,

John McCain has canceled his appearance with Larry King because he is furious about CNN's Campbell Brown asking Tucker Bounds a question that the man was completely at a loss to answer.

A simple question, really, about Palin in response to Tucker's "smoke and mirrors" attempts to make Palin appear to be more experienced than she is.

Campbell asked Tucker to tell her just one thing that Palin had done as commander-in-chief of the Alaska National Guard. Tucker floundered, attempted to redirect the dialogue, but Campbell stayed focused and on point.

McCain is quickly angered, reckless, and impulsive. And, he is a very vindictive man! We already know this in Arizona! When is the rest of the country going to understand?

What kind of president would he make? One who would do everything he could to control the national media, and the minds and lives of the American people.

Pastor Rick Warren was discussing evil in the world with McCain, and didn't realize that he was in its very presence!

John WA   September 2nd, 2008 8:27 pm ET

Oh, let me guess how the convention goes:

National Security: Yes, 9/11 happened on our watch, but nothing since. We must be doing it right!

Foreign Policy: We will kick [insert country name] butt if they don't play ball. (Also known as the bomb, bomb, bomb Iran policy.)

Energy Policy: drill [insert place] + oh yeah, that wind stuff is pretty good too if you don't harm the view from the "cottage."

Economy: It really works best when we ensure the wealthy keep more of their money. Trust us, you other people will be better off. We know best.

Social Policy: God's will be done [sotto voce -unto you (insert your category of heathen)]

I am really dissapointed with Kyra Phillips of CNN.Yesterday, she was reporting on how Sarah Palin was against contraceptives and condoms in Alaska and Bill Bennet got visibly angry on t.v. Today, she totally strayed from that message of anti- condoms by Palin in her reporting and even made remarks that showed she was trying to please Bill Bennet. That is journalism at its lowest.

Cynthia Nashville   September 2nd, 2008 8:18 pm ET

Candy did you happen to notice that while the RNC video was just shown, there was hardly any applause when Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King's pictures were displayed. However once Ronald Regan's picture appeared the crowd went crazy. Not to mention like the rest of the bloggers here have stated there his barely a speck a of diversity in the crowd. Honestly finding someone who is a minority in that crowd is harder than finding a needle in a haystack. Then only diverse Republican I've seen so far at the convention is Amy Holmes. Oh wait she's in New York…

Wow I just watched the republican convention Country First Video how nice, that it only showed Black people enslave and Martin Luther king mug shot with his process number hanging around his neck this just confirms that this how they see us as a person, Once again they have shown me why it’s hard to be black in America

Darrell   September 2nd, 2008 8:17 pm ET

Been doing some research on Palin and the incredible amount of ear marks she got for her term as mayor that give her part of her over exaggerated experience.Sot of goes against MCCain/Palin as mavericks and reformers.I can only see a bunch of Rebublicans with foot in mouth disease after this convention of lies starting with "Country First" which is a complete lie and offensive to anyones intellegence.Been blogging with real Hillary supporters and pretty hard to find a true Dem that would allow ruin the country by allowing Palin to become President and that is truly what you McCain voters will be voting for in the end.

Will in Dayton, OH   September 2nd, 2008 8:16 pm ET

It was odd.

Todd Palin, husband of Sarah, was a member of the secessionist Alaska Independence Party from 1995 through 2002. That's the information we just got from the Alaska Division of elections.

Probably not coincidentally, 2002 was the first time Sarah Palin ran for statewide office in Alaska.

Hollywood couldn't have dreamed of a script like this. McCain first major decision, and he picks an extreme canidate who's husband want's to succeed From the union. "Country First" lol

the more that Democrats, the party I belonged to for 30 years, trash this woman for being a working mother, the more inclined I am to vote for her. I think the Obama line of demeaning women is contrary to everything I was taught as a Democrat. I was going to write HIllary Clinton in, because I couldn't stomach voting for Obama after his treatment of Hillary, now they are repeating the sexist treatment on this woman. What woman can vote for Obama, with the way he demeans women is a mystery to me. Hint to Obama, you can be a working mother and be a good mother, your new talking point is disgusting.

Country first, are you kidding? The Republicans put themselves and their interests first. They have such a double standard with their "test of experience" that a person, Gov. of a state not much larger than Austin, TX, who has been in that position for 20 months, is the be all, end all as the Vice-president a heart beat away from the Presidency. Palin fits right in by the misuse of her power to fire her brother-in-law. She took a chapter from Karl Rove/GWBush and company. What a loser team the Republicans have for this next fou years!
