From

ST. PAUL, Minnesota (CNN) – I want to raise a question: if Hollywood is a nest of liberals and Democrats, why is it that virtually every Hollywood celebrity-turned politician has been a Republican. I give you: Ronald Reagan, Fred Thompson, George Murphy, Sonny Bono, Fred Grandy, Arnold Schwarzenegger. How can this be?

The one exception I can think of: Cooter from the Dukes of Hazzard, Ben Jones.*

paulman   September 3rd, 2008 3:34 am ET

Perhaps it's because the kind of Republicans that you will find in Hollywood are the sort of people who would want to join the "establishment"/government, which is why some of them run for office and are successful. However, perhaps the kind of liberals and Democrats that (arguably) dominate Hollywood are the kind of people that would never dream of running for office – though they do support the same policies and values that the Democratic party does.

k   September 3rd, 2008 2:58 am ET

Buddy, are you stuck on stupid? How much do you get paid to ask these thought-provoking questions? Who are you anyway?

indy chris   September 3rd, 2008 2:51 am ET

celebrity goes a long way in the gop

psittacines   September 3rd, 2008 2:37 am ET

Right. Castigate the left wing Hollywood and then invite actors to run for your top ticket and get them to speak at your conventions. What does this tell us about GOP spin and sincerity too. :)

David St. Louis   September 3rd, 2008 2:18 am ET

You are a stupid simpleton, these conservatives make sense when they speak! Thats why they are elected, unlike the Al Franken's, and the other liberals you think are geniuses who the American public is sick of.

The facts are you scoff at Reagan, Thompson, Murphy, Bono, Grandy, and Schwarzenegger, because of there conservatism, you would never have run to interview them as some sort of expert in world affairs while they were conservative actors. The only way a conservative from Hollywood gets his message out is to run for office. Any liberal idiot can get his message out on CNN.

Noah, Calabasas CA   September 3rd, 2008 2:06 am ET

Answer me this: why has a party who basically has a love affair with Ronald Regan (who was a celebrity in case you forgot) been painting Barack Obama as a "celebrity"?

Carl from MI   September 3rd, 2008 2:00 am ET

Because actors act like better Republicans than actual Republicans themselves???

Because actors know better than try to act like a Democrat, because Democrats don't tolerate PRETENDING???

Because Democratic actors know they just can't hold a candle to Democratic politicians. Republicans actors, on the other hand, steal the spotlight from Republican politicians.

What can you say? Republican politicians have weak game!!!!

WAKE UP, AMERICA!!! VOTE SMART…. NOT SENILE!!!!!

John in Binghamton NY   September 3rd, 2008 1:48 am ET

MONEY!!!! People with lots of money tend to want to keep it and the GOP is their party. Also the GOP has never had a problem being hypocrites.

Dee   September 3rd, 2008 1:41 am ET

It's simple! You make a lot of money and you forget your old poor values for new wealthy ones… i.e. the Republicans.

Misty   September 3rd, 2008 1:36 am ET

They were and are all unqualified. Democrats will not give them the time of day–

Also the actor turned politicians– were starting to turn old!! Needed new gigs-

What better gig than beocming a republican– they are all acting to love our country anyway

Counntry First: McCain's slogan– have you heard anything more stupid than that!!!

george fernan   September 3rd, 2008 1:26 am ET

Fringe Alaskan Independence Party: Palin was a Member blogs.abcnews.com — McCain's campaign likes to herald the independence of its new running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. Officials of the Alaskan Independence Party say that Palin was once so independent, she was once a member of their party, which has been pushing for a legal vote on whether or not residents of the 49th state can secede from the U.S.

TonyInKentucky   September 3rd, 2008 1:25 am ET

Republicans are lying hypocrites as usual Mr. Schneider.

Just like they've been playing the anti-abortion and anti-gay folks for a generation.

matt   September 3rd, 2008 1:25 am ET

They are the doers, not whiners like you.

Bill   September 3rd, 2008 1:21 am ET

It takes a set of principles (morals/values) that you believe in and the courage to stand up for them. A conservative in Hollywood must be strong and be able to defend/promote their positions. For the most part Liberal Elitism is short on facts and logic but long on windedness.

FORMER Obama Volunteer   September 3rd, 2008 1:20 am ET

Mr. Schneider, yours is a completely pointless blog post.

Dimslie   September 3rd, 2008 1:18 am ET

It's pretty simple, Bill. There aren't too many districts in the country where George C. Looney, Susan Sarandon, Sean Penn, or Michael Moore could win.

Andy in Charlotte, NC   September 3rd, 2008 1:09 am ET

Because Republicans want you to think that most celebrities are liberals. This will make it appear like Democrats are out-of-touch like celebrities are. Fortunately, I can see through this crap and make up my own mind…both parties suck! Let's stop hammering our schoolchildren with the two-party system and get a third (or fourth or fifth..or none!) party on the ballot and in debates.

Larry Buchas   September 3rd, 2008 1:09 am ET

That will change. Al Franken will be the first example. Ben Affleck will be the second. And we never know if George Clooney picks up the call?

Texas Witch Twister   September 3rd, 2008 1:01 am ET

SCHEIDER YOU AND CNN HAVE GONE WAY TO FAR LEFT. IT IS OBVIOUS WHO YOU ARE BACKING. BUT YOU HAVE FAILED IN ACHIEVING WHAT YOUR AIMING FOR. THAT IS PUTTING AN UNQUALIFIED MAN INTO THE WHITE HOUSE. FORGET IT. IT WILL NOT HAPPEN WHILE MORAL PEOPLE WATCH AND HAVE A HAND IN IN MAKING SURE HE CAN NOT WIN THE ELECTION.

Sammy   September 3rd, 2008 12:56 am ET

The offhand remark would be that maybe some republican actors in the end prefer power over acting when given a choice. However there have also been democrat actors who have tried for office but didnt get anywhere. A couple that come to mind that didnt make it were considered too liberal, even among democrats.

I would sorta take Arnold off your list because hes not exactly a real republican… as the California republican party will tell you.

Faiz   September 3rd, 2008 12:45 am ET

Interesting point. The names you listed are the actors from Yester years. The current generation and new actors are very liberal. If any of them turn politician will be democrats.

tom in iowa   September 3rd, 2008 12:22 am ET

can you believe Cambell Brown does not know that gov. are the commander's of there states guard? and then on top of that she was questioning her judgement , I say big deal of a mother and her pregnent daughter but the judgement of Obama taken his girl to that church and then after 20 years he thinks its time to change?

how has better judgement?

Palins 5 years as mayor and 2 years as gov. is far more than obamas 100 days as u s senator? every one is saying he has 4 years in as u s senator? I do not count these last 3
2 years he is running for office? and the first year he was in africa far to much,so that leave just one year….oops 100 days?

so mrs Palin 7 years at 365 days 24/7 , that is like over 20 terms at 100 days per term?

Patty, Big Bear, CA   September 3rd, 2008 12:15 am ET

I rest my case…..the media isn't liberal as has been shouted from the rooftops all these years by the conservatives…..besides that, the real Hollywood celebrities are actually working democrats rather than out of work republicans that have to look elsewhere for a paycheck.

david   September 3rd, 2008 12:14 am ET

We'll Al Franken was on SNL in its hey day….not a Hollywood celebrity exactly, but he was on TV.

tigerakabj   September 3rd, 2008 12:12 am ET

B/c Schneider the Repubs are hypocrits. Everything negative the spew onto Obama, they themselves are guilty of. End of story.

Obama/Biden 2008/2012.

Because if you are uberrich and want to pay a low percentage of taxes, you become a Republican.

No need to look out for the people that actually make this country work. When I look out at this nation and see who polices it, who teaches our children, who fixes our roads, the nurses, the caregivers, the farmers….its not the rich power mad fat cats.

Its everyday people. And the democratic party is looking out for them.

Michael   September 3rd, 2008 12:05 am ET

Republicans say one thing and then go around and do the opposite? I'm shocked, shocked I say!

brian   September 3rd, 2008 12:05 am ET

Easy. The Democratic party has real members with real experience and convictions. The Republican Party has become a haven for hacks and wannabes!

Uma from Liverpool, UK   September 2nd, 2008 11:59 pm ET

And Al Franken, of the Not Ready for Prime Time Players! He used to do a lot of writing for the original, counter-culture, 'Saturday Night Live', back in the day. I forget what he's running for, but he's a Dem, for certain.

RapidRay   September 2nd, 2008 11:57 pm ET

You forgot Clint Eastwood and Charlton Heston (President of the NRA).

An even better question would be why former Republican officials always seem to retire to a ranch while retired Democrats win Nobel Prizes.

Junaid Khan   September 2nd, 2008 11:57 pm ET

reason is that democrat actors like their money and parties. If they enter politics, they will have to show up for work and do something to better this country…well, that takes some guts and decision making. CAn they bring their agents?? What a stupid topic you picked.

grampa mac   September 2nd, 2008 11:50 pm ET

Good Question!

Just another example of the hypocrisy of the Republicans

They'll lambast the inexperienced, unless it's their own VP pick. They'll disqualify the Star, unless he's on their side.

Pathetic

John Scott   September 2nd, 2008 11:50 pm ET

Moron. Fred Thompson is not a celebrity-turned-politician. Fred Thompson was involved in politics all the way back to Watergate and beyond, long before he did any acting.

Rudy   September 2nd, 2008 11:48 pm ET

Schneider, that is because only the ones who have enough brains to make the leap from reading a script to making decisions understand how backwards raising taxes to boost an economy really is.

Dave Anthony   September 2nd, 2008 11:45 pm ET

Hollywood actors make insane amounts of money. Democrats tax rich people the most. Am I being cynical?

francis cuny   September 2nd, 2008 11:44 pm ET

What about Al Frankin

Kim Sattler   September 2nd, 2008 11:39 pm ET

As a interested Democrat and a supporter of Obama, watching the Republican convention it saddens me and makes me extremely angry that "Trader Joe" "Lie" berman would say the things that he has said, about Sen. Obama. It's obvious to me by his speech this evening that, he's going to be rewarded some way by a "cabinet appointment" by Sen. McCain. It's sad that he's "sucking " up to McCain. If in fact that the things that "Trader Joe" said in his speech about the goings on in Washington which McCain Has been a part of for almost 30 plus years, which "Begs the question" as to why does it have to take McCain being President to actually "shake It Up ???"
"Trader Joe" Please ,Please, Don't ever say that your an "independent" Democrat ! ! ! Because you've lost your way! ! !

As to Gov. Palen there's a real "roll model" for all young women to aspire too. Now let's see…. Oh yeh her 17 year old daughter is "Knocked Up!!! " Maybe if she had spent less time being "A hockey mom" Or a true "Hunter in the wilderness" just maybe she might have been able to head that situation off ! ! ! ! !

Sincerly,
Kim
Woodstock, Il.

Becky response to DREW   September 2nd, 2008 11:35 pm ET

Because they are rich and we all no repubs tax the poor more, and let the rich get richer.. easy to figure that out!!

Desmond Sequeira   September 2nd, 2008 11:35 pm ET

Hollywood and the Republican Party have an obvious thing in common:
They are full of actors and people who stage shows. The transition is easy.

TKD   September 2nd, 2008 11:33 pm ET

The great Helen Gahagan Douglas was an actress and singer before representing California in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1944 to 1950 as a Democrat.

Kris B, TX   September 2nd, 2008 11:32 pm ET

I will answer that question like this.

They have enough Democrat actors in Washington DC. There is not enough room for the liberal actors from Hollywood to get in.

CASE CLOSED.

No Palin/No McCain   September 2nd, 2008 11:32 pm ET

Because it is the Grand "OLD" Party.
When their career in Hollywood is over, they join the GOP!
I hope they put McCain and Palin on Broadway.

Jeff from Chicago   September 2nd, 2008 11:29 pm ET

Wow…this is trash reporting at its most shallow. You are a senior political analyst? Shouldnt you be preparing to fly to Geneva to cover George Clooney's fundraising event for Obama?

J.T.   September 2nd, 2008 11:28 pm ET

Look on the bright side. You still have Al Franken and Jerry Springer.

David   September 2nd, 2008 11:28 pm ET

The liberal Hollywood celebrities are "talkers" & the Converative Republican celebrities are "Doer's". Was that so hard to figure out?

lovable liberal   September 2nd, 2008 11:28 pm ET

Those who are good at entertainment stay in entertainment. The hours are better, and you can have sex if you want. Those who are bad at entertainment have to go into politics, which is why they tend to be Republicans.

Bethie   September 2nd, 2008 11:27 pm ET

Fred Thompson is an idiot…what a boob!

Jason D   September 2nd, 2008 11:26 pm ET

Once the actors leave the land of make believe and start living amongst the people, they realize the party for the real people of this country is the GOP. It is easy to sit in the ivory towers of Hollywood and hold protests, but once you spend time in the real world, you realize the party of action is the Republican party. Good point Mr Schneider.

yankeegirl15   September 2nd, 2008 11:26 pm ET

Half of these people are dead. Fred has been dead for years he is just to stupid to know it.

Brent   September 2nd, 2008 11:24 pm ET

Mike   September 2nd, 2008 11:23 pm ET

Ya know I never thought about this lol. But to be honest republicans are vastly wealthier then the rest of us and those guys you mentioned made a lot of money. The rich are rich and the rich keep it.

Becky   September 2nd, 2008 11:23 pm ET

Who cares how many politicians have come from Hollywood? I care about feeding and clothing my family. I don't care about allt he "war stories" that the Republicans want to use. I listened last time Bush was elected and how many times 911 was mentioned. Scare tactics. Look where we are now. People are being fired where I work. I have been there 26 years and that has never happened.

I have watched the Republican convention and I hear war. I want to hear about the US. I want to hear why I should trust them again after 8 years of failure. I want them to give me a speech like I heard from Barack Obama.

Mary 55yo white woman   September 2nd, 2008 11:21 pm ET

Joe Lieberman the new Benedict Arnold.

GOBAMA!!   September 2nd, 2008 11:16 pm ET

I've thought this many times. It's one of many examoles of "repeat something enough & it becomes the truth". It's good to see that the media is finally seeing through their smokescreen. It's about time you guys started doing your job!

PGB   September 2nd, 2008 11:15 pm ET

Are you really dimwitted enough to think there are more Republicans than Liberals in Hollywood? Of course you're not.

I do at least appreciate that you aren't trying to hide your true blue preferences as much as you used to do. We would much rather seen an honest editorial than a patronizing piece of "nonpartisan" reporting.

NoBama   September 2nd, 2008 11:15 pm ET

SCHNEIDER: I want to raise a question: if Hollywood is a nest of liberals and Democrats, why is it that virtually every Hollywood celebrity-turned politician has been a Republican. I give you: Ronald Reagan, Fred Thompson, George Murphy, Sonny Bono, Fred Grandy, Arnold Schwarzenegger. How can this be?

Because they are the only Hollywood liberals to ever be willing to put their money where their mouth is. The rest just focus on the mouth part.

i didnt realiz there was so much jeoulous when it comesto obama

Bill   September 2nd, 2008 11:14 pm ET

I just finished hearing Joe Lieberman speak at the RNC. I once supported Lieberman but never again. For weeks now I have heard the republicans like Alex, Amy and the other Republican pundits talk about how inexperienced Obama is. Here is a question for David, "Can you tell me who is experienced for the Office of the President other than a sitting President seeking re-election?"

I served more than 30 years in the United States Marine Corps and know a little about surrounding yourself with an experienced staff, especially the second in command.

I adored President Reagan but tonight I was reminded that he lowered the tax rate and took away deductions I could make – end results: higher taxes. Only the rich could take advantage of the loop holes. I am one republican that is saying enough is enough.

Jobs lost = Republicans and outsourcing.

Joel   September 2nd, 2008 11:14 pm ET

What is the point of that? A few sentences about movie stars is on the ticker.

James in RI   September 2nd, 2008 11:14 pm ET

There's only three reasons for being a Republican, as I see it. I call them The Three R's.
You're either:
Rich, a Redneck, or Retarded.
2 out of 3: you get to be a delegate.
3 out of 3: you get to be the president.

PS: Some people would add "religious" to this list, but I'd argue that if you actually think Republicans are more religious, ethical, or moral than Democrats, you probably belong in the third group of the original three R's…

Mr. Educator   September 2nd, 2008 11:13 pm ET

That is a really good question?

Adrienne   September 2nd, 2008 11:12 pm ET

Good point. But lost on the republicans.

Eric   September 2nd, 2008 11:12 pm ET

Easy to explain. Reps only get power by pandering to the low information, non-educated people. It's with those constituents that former B-movie stars can have a certain appeal. Unable to reflect, they go along with the face that seems familiar and comforting.

Lindsey P   September 2nd, 2008 11:12 pm ET

That's because they got to go out into the real world and run for election, saw the light and got smart!

Matt   September 2nd, 2008 11:12 pm ET

The answer to your question is that the short list of people you listed are the only ones with the conviction to put real action behind their beliefs. Many of those from the "nest of liberals and Dems" as you describe just want to pontificate and criticize without ever offering any real solutions to the problems we face and will continue to face. We live in an imperfect world and there will always be security and economic challenges. Of course if you believe Obama, well then if we just elect him, all our problems will be solved in short order. We'll live in a utopia. But wait, he can't seem to offer any specifics behind all these great "ideas" he has. Whatever it takes to get elected I guess…

Darrel from Denver   September 2nd, 2008 11:11 pm ET

That one is simple…..they are looking for power and control. They can't get that with the Democrats since that party is actually trying to look out for Americans instead of themselves.

They are simply selfish and trying to cash in on the game.

Ask something harder…

WadeG   September 2nd, 2008 11:11 pm ET

Well, they are the only ones wise enough to be successful than the Dems.

Dennis Hunt   September 2nd, 2008 11:11 pm ET

Gee Bill:

Last time I looked a "Political Analyst" should tell both sides of the story and not be biased. Where did you ever get the idea that anyone wants to hear your biased liberal opinions? You are one of the media people are supposed to act in the public trust. In fact you could give a bleep about what anyone, any citizen thinks. You are on a non-professional, partisan course to elect a poorly qualified black man President.

You are no credit to your profession.

LaVelle from Atlanta, GA   September 2nd, 2008 11:11 pm ET

They know how boring the Republicans are and maybe they want to appeal to younger people who have not been interested in the past. But I have to tell you CNN, Fred Thompson is not the answer.

NoBama   September 2nd, 2008 11:10 pm ET

Maggie Muggins From Selwyn   September 2nd, 2008 11:04 pm ET

That's an easy question to answer. The best and easiest way to get elected is as a Republican as the opposition within their party is so weak and poor almost anyone can get nominated in their party.

If you don't believe this look at McCain and Palin ones feeble minded and old and the other has experience on the PTA.

Diane Dagenais Turbide   September 2nd, 2008 11:04 pm ET
