Recent polls show Democrats are in the lead and Republicans have some catching up to do.

1. How rough will Republican speakers get with Barack Obama? If they try to insinuate that Obama is somehow foreign or unpatriotic, it could backfire badly. Or if speakers use Obama’s middle name.

2. Will the speakers try to link McCain with the Bush Administration’s record? Or will they try to define McCain as the real candidate of change?

Drew,
here's my answer to your question: "Why should ANYONE's middle name be considered derogatory?"

It shouldn't be. Certain people have tried to MAKE it derogatory by insinuation. It's HOW they have been saying it and their purpose in doing so. That purpose is to mislead ignorant people (those who don't do their own homework ) into believing Sen. Obama is a Muslim. As opposed to the Christian that he is. To paint the man as foreign, unpatriotic, and "different".

As much as I try I just can't wrap my low level, left leaning sad excuse for a brain around why anyone believes anything Republicans say. After 8 years of astounding neglect and constitutional abuse by the right wing and Republican party it should be a no brainer that four more years would be catastrophic on so many levels.

I just watched a video of a journalist getting arrested for trying to cover the rnc. This is an example of what is in store for us if the republicans win. Loss of rights more than we already have lost and the silencing of anyone who has a different opinion from the standard republican thought.

The question, Bill, is not how rough the RepuThugs will play during their convention but how rough they have already played. Was it not Karl Rove who recently called Senator Biden a loud mouthed doofus? They have already resorted to their 12-year-old bully lording over a playground full of 10-year-olds (the bully was held back two grades) mentality.

What say America? Do you want four more years of the same or are you willing to at least take a chance that things could be better. It is a mind set and it is up to you to make up your minds.

no matter what they do, mcbush has screwed up big time with his vp pick. no matter what they say, mccain is cooked. it's over. for one reason: The lady he picked belong to a separatist party.

The leader of the alaska separatist party called for infiltration of parties to work toward separation. She can' t possibly be running for president or vip while at the same time hugging separatists.

In other countries and in this country, it is called treason. She is a traitor and a spy for separatists. she is not fit for office and mcCain must have been drunk when he picked her.

I hope RNC stays focussed on issues and provide their solutions. All four candidates are very good and qualified to run.

let the stronger ticket win but it has to be based on solutions for:

1) economy
2) Immigration
3) Healthcare
4) energy
5) WAR / foreign policy
6) trade policy

enough of negative attacks.

After eight years of the Bush administration, it is impossible to imagine four more years of the same thing – lies, war of choice, corruption at an alarming rate, incompent decisions, Alberta Gongalez, in debt up to our ears and our reputation around the world as a good and decent people in the toilet. It is time to place in office an educated, intelligent and clear thinking man with an equally prepared VP who could step in, a man who will make decisions based on fact and circumstances and not on the far-right religious dogma that has so damaged our country.

I don't understand how Republicans criticize Obama supporters by accusing them of acting like mindless lemmings, "drinking the kool-aid", when I haven't seen one Republican blogger or commentator ever, even once, say something that Karl Rove hasn't already said first.

Every "debate" that I have with a Republican about issues just breaks down into a situation in which I am being fed talking points from an RNC e-mail.

I really can't wait to see how well (or vice versa) John McCain does on his nomination speech. It'll probably be uninspiring, but have plenty of substance, something McCain is known for. Todd Palin, husband of Sarah, was a member of the secessionist Alaska Independence Party from 1995 through 2002. That's the information we just got from the Alaska Division of elections.

Probably not coincidentally, 2002 was the first time Sarah Palin ran for statewide office in Alaska.

Of course they'll attack Obama. They have nothing else to run on. No ideas, no plan, no clue.

KG   September 2nd, 2008 8:29 pm ET

Republicans don't need to insinuate Obama is foreign or unpatriotic. He does that all by himself.

McCain has throughout his Senate history taken on his party on the issues. He's fought for things for both sides of the aisle with members from both sides of the aisle.

He's taken a stance on this issues. Some popular, some not. But, he's taken a stance.

Obama, has voted "present" something like 70% of the time. No stance, no backbone, no core policy. Nothing to define him or what he is.

We need a President in the White House who is a man of action. We do not need a President who is simply "present." Obama has proven to simply be "present." An empty suit, breathing up the oxygen of people in Wash DC who are there to work. It's time we gave Obama a ticket back to Chicago.

It IS his middle name, so what's the big deal about using it?

Sacto Joe   September 2nd, 2008 8:28 pm ET

Senator McCain has blown it with his selection for VP – but not because she's a woman and not because she's inexperienced. He's blown it because he FLIP-FLOPPED by picking someone with so little experience after he vociferously attacked his opponent on the same grounds!

Personally, I don't have a problem with either one's experience. I just have a problem when the guy who wants to head the country will say anything to win.

kaydeedee   September 2nd, 2008 8:28 pm ET

Of course the convention speakers will come out swinging at Obama. That's the norm for political comventions. But any insinuation that Sen. Obama is unpatriotic or foreign, or pointedly using his middle name, will seem desperate, tacky attempts to right this ship – if not downright racist. I don't think they'll do that. And calling Obama inexperienced or "not ready" will be just as bad, in light of the naming of a VP nominee with less than 2 years experience as a governor (that and being mayor & city councilman of a very tiny town). Although I did see Sen. McCain answer Brian Williams' questions about Gov. Palin's lack of resume by ticking off the jobs I just mentioned and including her PTA work (really?). He concluded the list by saying there was "no comparison" between her experience and Obama's (true, but not in the way he must have meant it). He should avoid that kind of talk. It makes him seem delusional at best.

I think there will be minimal linking McCain with Bush, although the faithful still seem to like Bush in spite of the numerous pickles he has put us and our country in.

I will be watching for points that Mr. Schneider makes. What I've seen so far at the RNC in contrast to DNC...
1. Delegates mostly white vs multiracial
2. During opening video not much applause or recognition of MLK, Jr and Rosa Parks.
3. The 15 yr old's essay before the pledge was wonderful!

I'm a registered independent voter, but a strong supporter for Obama/Biden. So far I'm feeling a lot more inspired and comfortable with the Democratic platform.

John in Mlps   September 2nd, 2008 8:27 pm ET

I see a core republican base forming around supporting McCain and Palin that will almost be bulletproof. The evangelicals seem to rally behind McCain because of Palin.

The 40% or so of Hilliary miffed supporters will take McCain's running mate as a slap in the face (I just had one of those supporters tell me that today). They're getting mad about Obama too since he's all but booted Hilliary from any decision making for his running mate, not to mention that it was an Obama aide who called Clinton first telling her she's not his running mate.

So those 40% are angry enough not to vote for McCain or Obama; they'll sit this election out. I think McCain now has the upper hand no matter what people think.

Democrat....no matter what!   September 2nd, 2008 8:27 pm ET

Hey John Smith! Don't confuse having money and a Harvard degree with intelligence! Anyone foolish enough to vote for Bush twice has to be an idiot! Just look at the mess you smart Republicans have put us in!!

If being intelligent means screwing over the less fortunate, bankrupting the U.S., contaminating our environment, and taking away our basic, civil rights against our own will, then I'd rather have a "lower level of intelilgence"....what ever that means!

With Obama's acceptance challenge, I bet McCain will tead lightly this time. The polls reflect how the American people are feeling. We can see and read between the lines. I am a swing vote that has swung to Obama. I would rather try change than to experince four more years of the same.

The RNC convention is not very crowded. I bet there is less than 10,000 people there. Boy, are they in trouble.

Holly Echols   September 2nd, 2008 8:21 pm ET

I just watched the opening video. I was appalled being an African American citizen. I can not believe that the only picture of Martin Luther King the republicans could find and display was a picture of him with a jail number. The other picture was that of black slave on his knees. The picture of Rosa Parks was decent but Nothing has changed with these people. I decided to watch the convention to be informed. But what I have learned right out of the blocks that if John McCain is president we will be in a lot of trouble. I am fifty seven years old and I am in tears. I am motivated more than ever to give to the Obama campaign every extra dime that I can scrape up. I will spend every free moment trying to get votes for Obama.

If I may, Michael. I think John's point is that there is a lot of discussion about credentials. It's a good point to note that Obama spent years formally studying the ACTUAL constitution when he studied law. The constitution is no laughing matter. I'm not saying you need to be a lawyer to be a good president. Truman is a good counter example. But it certainly looks good on the resime.

black man   September 2nd, 2008 8:21 pm ET

Wake up America! McCain is the best candidate... if he was black like me, this would not be close. As a proud black African American who is intelligent on the issues, I can honestly say that I can not vote for Barrack. He has no substance.

If I wanted to be as guilty as racists of present and past, I would vote for color and Barrack would be my man, but I can't and won't. I love America and believe that McCain has better ideas and better experience behind him.

Prove me right John McCain.

What to "watch for"? I will be clipping my to nails tonight. I'll be watching to make sure their all even.

Tennessee   September 2nd, 2008 8:18 pm ET

Lets watch for Palin to answer least one questions on her point of views, not McCain. Lets watch she if people who "Support Unwed Mothers" also support unwed African American mothers. Lets see if the Reps can give a clear views of what they stand for and not only well we better then Obama and not state why.

Jude   September 2nd, 2008 8:17 pm ET

What this is news? people listen to Repubs? Idi*ts...its too late...its over...Repubs just lost any arguments they have against BO by naming Palin. I bet...McShame is going to ask Palin to step down as VP in the next few days and then McShame is going to force her to say that she stepped down because of personal reasons....hahaha...who's got judgement now?

Brenda Hills   September 2nd, 2008 8:17 pm ET

I am confused beyond belief.
Obama will not go negative, that he is going the high road.
NEWS FLASH ! IT WILL NOT WIN THE WHITE HOUSE !!!
I am tired of hearing the goodie two shoes bullcrap.
It is working for the GOP.
Obama go for the jugular ! WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU !???
You are handing over the white house to McBush !
The GOP don't care, and guess what dude, AMERICANS are falling for it !
Don't you get it ???

Liberal4Obama   September 2nd, 2008 8:17 pm ET

McCain does not care about America, choosing a secessionist as VP shows just that

J.L.   September 2nd, 2008 8:16 pm ET

I'm sure some of the more nuttier right-wingers will stray from the message they want to convey. Before the end of the convention, you'll hear someone say, "Barack Hussein Obama" with lots of emphasis on the middle part.

Tommy   September 2nd, 2008 8:16 pm ET

Yo "white man" please reconsider that vote... I am a repub and still plan to vote McCain... a true conservative would NEVER EVER consider voting for that socialist-lite candidate BHO!!!

loras iowa   September 2nd, 2008 8:16 pm ET

Too many Monday Morning Quarterbacks. Lead, follow, or get out of the way. Leadership means making tough decisions. No attacks since 9/11. Accident or good leadership? Give em hell GW

Lee, New York City   September 2nd, 2008 8:16 pm ET

The Republican's don't need to "rough Obama up."

All they have to do is point out that he is a Socialist, in-experienced, and will RAISE your taxes to support all his proposed Government give-away programs.

He's a typical democrat and NO liberal democrat has EVER won the White House.

Tarrie   September 2nd, 2008 8:15 pm ET

Voters aren't interested in republican rhetoric this time. What we want is a democrat in the white house-period.

Glen in Los Angeles   September 2nd, 2008 8:15 pm ET

There are going to be texts-a-plenty tonight from Team Obama. I'll bet each attack will be met with an immediate response via cell phone.

Coach K   September 2nd, 2008 8:14 pm ET

Seems the GOP is going to try to tie the problems of the US on the Democratic congress if the RNC Chairperson is any indication.

WERE Both BRITNEY and PARIS BUSY!   September 2nd, 2008 8:14 pm ET

They will try to define him as the agent of "change".

My question is with this latest "judgment" call of nominating the Clampett Clan is it change any RATIONAL American wants???

Tubby The Tuba   September 2nd, 2008 8:13 pm ET

Alaska, a state that had less than 700,000 people in the 2000 census! It is the size of Austin, TX! Palin has been Gov. for 20 months, and was Mayor of a small town of less than 7000! Obama has many years of experience as a State Senator of Illinois, and four years as a Senator from Illinois. And that compares to Palin's 7,000 people. He is too old, and with many more decisions like this our country will be in a world war!

Francine   September 2nd, 2008 8:13 pm ET

Don't fool yourself... there is no way that Hillary or Bill will vote for Obama! You know they are down with McCain, but just can't say it. Hillary wants her chance at Mac in 2012.

Go Hillary

Ted Williams   September 2nd, 2008 8:13 pm ET

Republicans? Who needs Republicans when CNN so call reporters like Kyra Phillips (aka Mic in the bathroom) are drooling over Palin. Nice unbiased reporting Kyra. Yikes! Spare me the liberal media comments, they are all owned by corporations.

Kate, Atlanta   September 2nd, 2008 8:13 pm ET

Bill, the real question is whether anyone other than their hardcore base even watch. The middle is long gone from this repl ticket.

John   September 2nd, 2008 8:13 pm ET

I'm watching the convention on CNN (because it's the only news channel I get). I thought CNN would be balanced after the DNC last week, and have more Republicans commenting on their own convention. I don't want to spend the week watching the RNC and listening to Carville and Brazille (sp?) criticize it. How can you have three democratic strategists commenting throughout the RNC? Wasn't last week their week???

Show some objectiveness!

CM   September 2nd, 2008 8:12 pm ET

Is anyone even watching that?

ran   September 2nd, 2008 8:12 pm ET

People the time is now for us to take back our country and the way to do that is by voting for Obama/Biden and other Democrats.

voter   September 2nd, 2008 8:12 pm ET

well If McCain and the republican party want to say Obama is unpatriotic. The democrats can say the same about Palin who is a member of AIP who wants Alaska to seperate from the U.S.

Marc from NH   September 2nd, 2008 8:11 pm ET

What sickens me is how liberal the media is. This election should not even be close – McCain should be running away with this thing, but the media is so in love with Obama that McCain doesn't stand a chance.

Should McCain lose, the good thing will be that Obama will make it to a second term. He will screw up this country so good that even the most diehard dems will vote Republican next time. That is if they save enough money to survive the onslaught that will be a BHO presidency.

Obama for change... because that is all you will have left!

Go McCain!

S.R.   September 2nd, 2008 8:10 pm ET

Why not use Obama's middle name? It is, after all, his name. What a ridiculous idea that using a national candidate's legal name is slanderous.

Bob W.   September 2nd, 2008 8:09 pm ET

Obama is not unpatriotic. He just doesn't have the experience to lead this country. When the end of the day comes and all the campaign rhetoric quells, this is the true issue that is left.

Matt, PA   September 2nd, 2008 8:09 pm ET

Ummm...his middle name is Hussein. Get over it! What is he running from? It's his name for crying out loud!

donna   September 2nd, 2008 8:09 pm ET

you already know the answers to both questions....seriously dude!!!

kayla   September 2nd, 2008 8:09 pm ET

NOBODY WHO IS 72 YEARS OLD CAN TALK ABOUT CHANGE. YOU CANNOT TEACH AN OLD DOG NEW TRICKS.

Craig A Texas Democrat   September 2nd, 2008 8:09 pm ET

I say Bring it Obama leads over 50% IN POLLS.

E   September 2nd, 2008 8:09 pm ET

I am watching the RNC convention on TV, It seem to the republican party is ONLY the elite, the majority, and the rich. What I observed was that it not diverse like the DNC.

Kaye- Jacksonville FL   September 2nd, 2008 8:09 pm ET

Is the Pope Catholic? Does a bear sh.. in the woods? Of course the Repugs will "rough up Obama".... slimy politics is what they do best...
spewing Lies is their forte...

Will they link McCain to Bush's records? Are they that STUPID??

Michael   September 2nd, 2008 8:08 pm ET

Hey John Smith, what is your point?????

white man   September 2nd, 2008 8:08 pm ET

to late...has a repub for 30 yrs..MCcain had lost my vote..i'm voting for BO..bad selection

Proud American   September 2nd, 2008 8:07 pm ET

Anyway you look at it we lose if McCain gets into theWhite House.

katiec   September 2nd, 2008 8:07 pm ET

The only thing the republicans can run on is lies, distortions,
exaggerations, pandering.
They certainly cannot run on their accomplishments.

Tyrone Brown   September 2nd, 2008 8:07 pm ET

I will be watching re-runs of the Democrat convention to stay close to the reality of things in America.

Gotta Be Kidding   September 2nd, 2008 8:06 pm ET

Governor Palin's speech is being written for her so doesn't that mean that all she's really capable of is reading a teleprompter?

eric herget   September 2nd, 2008 8:06 pm ET

Obama admits to abusing drugs and we are worried that Palin's husband got a dui 22 years ago? Come on folks. Lets look at the candidates and be fair in reporting.

Sherry, Atlanta   September 2nd, 2008 8:05 pm ET

Doesn't matter what the speaker's might say...All American's know this is the party of despair!

rachel   September 2nd, 2008 8:05 pm ET

I just hope the next time a republican mentions Hillary's name and her historic camapaign they choke on their own bile. They made her, bills, and chelesa's life a living hell for years now they want to pretend to care !!!!

Snooze fest   September 2nd, 2008 8:05 pm ET

You mean what to watch on Youtube, because I'd rather watch my eyelids, their much more interesting.

FrankSmith   September 2nd, 2008 8:05 pm ET

As someone recently wrote:

2 out of every 3 democrats have low levels of intelligence!!! How any democrat can ever say no to a Constitutional Scholar (such as Obama) to vote for a fighting pilot amazes even me with mild mental retardation!

Even with my low level of IQ, I know that Hillary will never again have the chance that she just missed by running a "poorly" managed campaign.

good2know   September 2nd, 2008 8:05 pm ET

what is going on with Palin and her daughter holding this baby...
