From

ST. PAUL, Minnesota (CNN) – Thompson gave a considerably better speech than he ever delivered on his own behalf during the primary season. He was certainly a lot more animated.

His attack on Obama – that he delivered a “teleprompter speech designed to appeal to America’s critics” abroad – brought the crowd to its feet.

The themes they’re stressing are character, judgment, leadership – all personal qualities. Republicans believe they can win the election on McCain’s personal qualities – because they’re not going to win on policy.

Two things...

For those that want to know where Fred Thompson was last year, let me tell you. He was home sleeping in his recliner taking life easy. He was one of the laziest candidates to ever run for office and had the lightest schedule of anyone during the primary season.

How funny that Republicans refer to Senator Obama as a "teleprompter" speaker. If anyone knew less about a topic but gave a rousing speech it was Ronald Reagan. Light on details and few on facts, he gave great speeches yet seldom understood the content. At least Senator Obama is prepared when he speaks and doesn't sing beach tunes about bombing other nations. Does he think war is funny and bombs magically land on only the evil?

Peter   September 2nd, 2008 11:03 pm ET

Who cares what Thompson says? Let's face it......he's a washed up actor.

Darrel from Denver   September 2nd, 2008 11:03 pm ET

John McCain is feared by our enemies abroad, they said tonight.

No kidding...he will invade in a heartbeat anyone who disagrees with him.

God help us if America falls for this crap once again.

KBAY   September 2nd, 2008 11:03 pm ET

Thomson's speech was brilliant... oh God if only he could have given it last year.

But I'm glad at least that he was able to summon his full speaking prowess for the benefit of McCain tonight. It's now clearly obvious that his friendship with McCain was and is genuine.

Bill in WA State   September 2nd, 2008 11:02 pm ET

Least experienced nominee in history?! I think there was another in our history with even less experience and he was a Republican! Can anyone guess who that might have been? I'll give you a clue. He was from the same state as Obama and wore a very tall top hat. Check your $5 bill.

Cecil   September 2nd, 2008 11:02 pm ET

They Forgot Two He's A Liar and A Warmonger!

john   September 2nd, 2008 11:02 pm ET

This is the worst I have seen a former United state senator speak, monotone and boring.
what is these sounds that he keeps making after every word.........God we need new leaders
It is so sad that this all the republicans can come up with.........TERRIBLE.
David g,Roland M,Donna B AND Carl B.Please call it the way it is it is PATHETIC.

Wendy   September 2nd, 2008 11:02 pm ET

Fred who??

Independent, white female for Obama   September 2nd, 2008 11:01 pm ET

What a joke! He is a war hero, but he definitely does not have the judgement nor the temper to be a Commander in chief. Mccain/Palin ticket is the worst judgement call a candidate can make before becoming president. He Showed us Independents that he is just a politician who was desparate and willing to put his own political gains ahead of his country. There may have been a time when Mccain would put his country first, he was young, he was a POW and now he has become an expert of Washington and the Bush politics. All bets are off! Winning is the only goal in sight and he made a huge mistake with his choice for VP.

"His attack on Obama – that he delivered a “teleprompter speech designed to appeal to America’s critics” abroad – brought the crowd to its feet."

I guess the 38 million Americans that watched that speech are the critics he is referring to. Just another example of the Republicans not getting it.

Maggie Muggins From Selwyn   September 2nd, 2008 11:01 pm ET

So where's the BEEF you know the policies. Why are the Great Oil Players hiding their policies from the voters

Steve   September 2nd, 2008 11:01 pm ET

One small point of contention here...did Thompson have his speech memorized? No? Oh, you mean he used a teleprompter? Oh, gotcha...doesn't seem so clever anymore.

Green-eyedMONSTER   September 2nd, 2008 11:01 pm ET

As if all of them reading wasn't using a telepromter. O just know how to do it better------HELLO it's called intelligence, character and best of all PRESIDENTIAL.

A President should speak clear and with confidence, I forget GOP don't get it......BUSH and John MCSAME looking for IQ lost with the WAR!

Jatovi, NC   September 2nd, 2008 11:00 pm ET

I wonder how much they paid the one black lady and one black guy to be there.

moses   September 2nd, 2008 11:00 pm ET

This is the most boring convention I've ever seen..Lieberman is so lame..I'm just falling asleep here.

Marie   September 2nd, 2008 10:59 pm ET

Yes ... they're not going to win on policy... and the more that people are exposed to the temperamental, hot-headed, mean-spirited John McCain, they're not going to win on personal qualities either.

Tracey   September 2nd, 2008 10:59 pm ET

McCain isnot even going to win on his personal qualities, because he does not have any! Nothing from nothing=nothing, you have got to have something!

mutter, mutter, mutter

Bill Tampa   September 2nd, 2008 10:59 pm ET

I agree. The Dems. Must bring this full circle and re-focus on the issues. The Republicans will try to keep them off point with distractions.ie..Palin's issues, and when they are brought up they will blame Obama.

Elizabeth   September 2nd, 2008 10:59 pm ET

My husband is a proud Iraq veteran and he served with honor. McCain didn't even bother to SHOW UP to vote for the GI Bill this year which was a bi-partisan bill. McCain misses more votes than anyone in Congress.

Maverick my butt McCain. Bill, I know you love McCain, but please post this because it's a fact!

Jason   September 2nd, 2008 10:58 pm ET

He's a disgusting, hateful man who is deluded enough to actually believe that Bush has made the country better. The appropriate question to ask in such a situation is, why is this man off of his medication?

Marvel   September 2nd, 2008 10:58 pm ET

ok and who is fred thompson again? oh, just an angry old white guy affraid of new politics

Yawn   September 2nd, 2008 10:58 pm ET

McCain is still NOT getting my vote. Thompson's speech did make me just turn my TV to "Law and Order" though !

Ben   September 2nd, 2008 10:58 pm ET

If this is his best speech, that's pretty sad.

Anne   September 2nd, 2008 10:57 pm ET

Ah yes Thompson failed actor useless politician. Sounds familair in the republican party.

Tracy T   September 2nd, 2008 10:57 pm ET

Nope, they won't win on policy, and Thompson just gave his own teleprompter speech, which will be NOTHING compared to the teleprompter speech McCRazy will give tomorrow!

I will be popping popcorn for that nutty event!!!

Kevin, Austin   September 2nd, 2008 10:57 pm ET

He's an actor- he's acting... you know lying. You know, what comes natural.

I tried to watch a bit, but it's sad that all they can do is try to bring Obama down... they can't seem to lift themselves up.

Arkansas Undertaker   September 2nd, 2008 10:57 pm ET

The Republicans wont win on any of the issues that matter most to everyday Americans.

katrina   September 2nd, 2008 10:57 pm ET

Schneider, what the hell? You read from a teleprompter every day. It's common practice. It's like attacking a doctor for using a stethoscope, for crying out loud. How about just the slightest touch of either journalistic or intellectual integrity here?

HD   September 2nd, 2008 10:56 pm ET

Is the Republican party all old white folks? Tonight really brought home the issue of how old McCain is.

Where is the diversity?

Come on Schneider   September 2nd, 2008 10:56 pm ET

More liberal bias from CNN and Schneider....

Stephy   September 2nd, 2008 10:56 pm ET

all talk all the time, where is the substance.
