Sarah Palin takes center stage at the Republican convention Wednesday night.

ST. PAUL, Minnesota (CNN) - In what is expected to be one of the most dramatic moments of the convention, Republican vice presidential pick Sarah Palin takes the stage Wednesday night to introduce herself to the country.

In just days, the Alaska governor has gone from a little-known politician to one of the most talked about women in the country, after being named to the GOP ticket and after news broke of her teen daughter's pregnancy.

Palin's address marks her chance to define herself to the American public and prove that she has the knowledge and judgment to sit down the hall from a 72-year-old president should John McCain be elected.

"I think this is her grand opportunity," said David Gergen, a former presidential adviser and CNN's senior political analyst. "It's an opportunity to introduce herself to American voters who have only heard a few things about her, barely saw her on Friday, and now have heard a lot of rumors and controversy."

A top aide to Palin said the Republican vice presidential candidate will highlight her record as a governor and mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, and will also call for reform in Washington in her speech Wednesday.

Sarah Palin is a heartbeat away from the presidency, IF McCain would be elected. This is a problem.

She might have “executive” experience, as she is governor of a state—but as someone from a low population state, that is nothing compared to being governor or serving in public capacity in a large population state. The mayor of Austin Texas or Columbus Ohio “governs” more people than the governor of Alaska.

This is the big leagues—and the stakes are very high—our lives and the lives of many peoples of the world. This is not about her being a woman. This is all about is she ready to lead one of the larger countries in the world at a time when our foreign relations are very complex. I find her selection insulting to women—is this the best woman candidate the Republican party has? Shame on McCain for not selecting a Republican woman who would have brought true credentials to a ticket for President and Vice President of the United States.

But here's a little news flash for all those reporters and commentators: I'm not going to Washington to seek their good opinion - I'm going to Washington to serve the people of this country."

What a hypocrit! Someone who can dish out critism and policies that are discriminatory, yet can't handle the media calling her a bad parent. Boo-hoo Miss Palin. You can serve the people of your country by dropping out of the presedential race. What are you going to do when the media of other countries attack your dated and discriminatory policies. Americans need to realize that the fundamental values of the Republican Party are oppressive and built on a culture of conspiracy, fear, and religious beliefs that no longer stand up in our "modern" society. Thankfuly, I live in Canada where we have a Charter of Rights and Freedoms that holds government accountable for their actions. ZEITGEIST! Watch it people!

What she says and what she needs to say will be vastly different. Being a staunch republican, I know she will take swipes at Obama while pretending to act like a lady. Obama on the otherhand, as well as Biden, will conduct themselves with dignity. That is as long as she doesn't get down and dirty. Then, all bets will be off the table. She really doesn't want to challenge Obama or Biden on their knowledge of the government. She will look like the fool that she is.

chas alabama   September 3rd, 2008 8:58 pm ET

She is just going to do the only thing republicans can do, try to go after Obama, nothing about America.

Lisa, MD   September 3rd, 2008 8:38 pm ET

I just read this please see this.

In an address last June, the Republican vice presidential candidate also urged ministry students to pray for a plan to build a $30 billion natural gas pipeline in the state, calling it "God's will."

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin told ministry students at her former church that the United States sent troops to fight in the Iraq war on a "task that is from God."

Is this for real or what

lol

Ray   September 3rd, 2008 8:33 pm ET

Kevin C, Are you serious? You have not heard Obama answer questions about Foreign policy? Maybe you should educate yourself before you post you views on here trying to sway others. You are either mis informed or just have an agenda. I saw what Campbell did and my question is why did the man not answer the question? I think you know the answer to that. And what's worse, McCain is using this to back out of a Larry King appearance.
And BTW, Obama agreed to be on Bill OReily's show tomorrow night and he will not back out, crying like McCain has done!

Oh Boy!!??   September 3rd, 2008 8:31 pm ET

She won't SAY anything. She will spew an attck ridden, snappy, from the "I am woman, hear me roar" side of the speech writers pen.

Although
I've been to Canada, indeed!

I'm close to Russia.

That story about me having an affair is a lie.

Alaska newspapers say that I only have 4 kids and my daughter is preggy with her second kid is not true.

Those would be good.

Maybe the song " I got no strings to hold me down" Palinochio

Tom   September 3rd, 2008 8:30 pm ET

Forget the politics. Most any politician, regardless of party, race, or gender, would not look to seek higher office when their immediate family includes a four-month-old baby with Downs Syndrome and a seventeen-year-old daughter who is pregnant. If there is any more appropriate time for a politician to remove themselves from consideration for the cliched "family concerns," it is difficult to imagine. Governor Palin, by her very acceptance of the Republican nomination for Vice President, has told the American people all we need to know about her: she is irresponsible.

KB   September 3rd, 2008 8:29 pm ET

The Republican Party is truly a disgrace. I WAS a staunch republican. I was the founder and president of my law school's republican organization. However, I will not be voting for the republican ticket this year. This party has lost all credibility. We are in a war that we do not need to be in, we have a huge deficit, gas prices have skyrocketed... shall I go on?

Now, they a put a woman on the ticket whose daughter is a "baby's mama". This is outrageous and what is more outrageous is how they are trying to spin this. I guess abstinence worked well for her. If McCain gets into office, we can look forward to another 4 more years of uselessness. We will be in WW 3 with Russia if McBush gets into office. If he does get into office, the people who voted for him deserve all the pain suffering that will come along with his presidency. This is NOT the republican party that I used to know and love.

As much as it pains me, I will be voting for Obama/Biden. This madness, recklessness and arrogance has got to stop!!!

I do not think she will be able to fool americans into thinking she can one day step in as President of the US, if something should happen to McCain. Peggy Noonan sais this was BS, and its over for the republicans! I agree with Peggy...and I am a democrat. She was the best speech writer the republicans had.....she knows McCains people blew it.

Anonymous   September 3rd, 2008 7:57 pm ET

I think McCain made a big mistake this is called desperate. She choose to have this baby with down syndrome this poor little baby needs the care attention and most of all the love of a mother. It is a full time job having children and to have a child with down syndrome is a 100% commitment to that child. I don't beliveve she could be a fully commited VP and Mother to this child.

lisa   September 3rd, 2008 7:53 pm ET

She should say I'm withdrawing. This fraud has about 12 years of 'do nothing' experience. This woman delegates! America doesn't need you SP. Do us a favor..... go back to Alaska and raise your two younger daughters so they don't become pregnant!!

Kevin C   September 3rd, 2008 7:53 pm ET

Last night CNN Campbell Brown brow beats McCain spokesman about Palin's Foreign Policy experience. Can someone get me a video asking Obama people SAME question? Could HYPROCRACY be the word of the week CNN? As Rudy Guliani said last night "At least we got the order correct, the person with little Foreign Policy experience is on the bottom of the ticket, but the Democrats have the person with ZERO Foreign Policy experience at the TOP of the ticket"..Not counting the Barack "photo op" in Iraq, in which BTW he NEVER even met with the troops unless the cameras were running. WHY is the LEFT sooo SCARED of PALIN????? Surely even a left-wing blog like this can see through this nonsense.

Raul, Austin, TX   September 3rd, 2008 7:51 pm ET

Is Sarah Palin suitable for the role VP? I guess that is a question even she is asking herself right now. Yes, she is a mother of 5 with a pregnant teenage daughter and a child with down syndrome; but these are issues that many American families face today and it is shameful that she is brought to the spotlight, let alone be attacked because of them.

The ones who should really be in the spotlight are John McCain and his campaign advisers. With elections just around the corner, and an ever-growing Obama inclination, desperation has struck the Republican Party harder than lightning. It is not the fact that a woman was nominated for Vice President, on the contrary, I think it was about time a woman shared the Presidential Ballot; but what I really dislike is that they had to resort to a candidate of female gender in an attempt to gain some last minute votes or more specifically, women votes. It's ridiculous, it's degrading and people should notice that a candidate this poor-minded is not capable of making good decisions.

I greatly doubt John McCain would have appointed Sarah Palin for his running mate if Obama would have picked Hillary as his. This ain't chess, the self-acclaimed "Original Maverick" thinks this is a strategy game and is trying to take advantage of the fact that a female was not elected presidential nominee or appointed VP on the Democratic Party.

anorth   September 3rd, 2008 7:50 pm ET

McCain has turned this political race into an Republican Circus Show that the rest of the world is laughing at day after day.

Palin can say whatever she likes, I don't trust her motives and I don't believe in her viewpoint nor do I believe that she speaks from her heart but is only there for her own political gain (since she is obviously so not qualified to run our country on any level).

With this 'circus' just getting starting, it has to be the media who will find out what the 'real' story is since you can't get it from McCain nor Palin.

McCain thinks he's quite the smart one right now because he put this woman on his ticket and almost all the intelligent Republicans agree that she should not be there.

The Republican Party has been back-peddling ever since the uglies began to come out......1.) being federally investigated after only being in office for 16 months 2.) not even knowing what the V.P does (OMG) 3.) knowing that her daughter at 16 got pregnant (now 17 – 5 months later) and still accepting the nomination for Vice President. Basically, her actions have spoken loud and clear. I don't respect her.

The right-wing smugness is what is so irritating and so hypocritical that it is even hard to watch the RNC. I will not stay up to listen to her try to sell herself.

Again, the American women are alot smarter than McCain thinks they are and Clinton backers will not simply vote for McCain because a woman is on his ticket.

Did McCain 'forget' that Palin does not represent the ideals of the women within the Democratic party nor that of our country.......Teen-age pregnancy, at this time in our evolution, is unacceptable especially not when Mother dearest is making that her platform.

I believe that there are alot of women who do not want this women to be the 'Role Model' for the millions of young women in our country.

I know that I don't want her in the White House making decisions that effect me as a woman and I will be encouraging all women to research the motives behind the Republicans.

Karin   September 3rd, 2008 7:48 pm ET

The amount of time that has been spent preparing Sarah Palin's speech and the fact that she has been available for only one interview is further evidence that she is clearly not the best person to be the V.P. of the U.S. at such an unstable time in our own country and around the world. Come on, for McCain to pick Palin, and then be so ill prepared for the week ahead makes me question his capability. The United States is in a critical crisis on many levels. I am a registered republican now voting for Obama. My mind is made up before her speech. The Republican party needs a 4 year break to get it together.

GatorGab   September 3rd, 2008 7:45 pm ET

Wow, the socialists are out in full force tonight. You might want to ask the dems if they properly vetted Obama before allowing him to run! The same inexperience issues most of you raise apply EXACTLY to Obama! What a bunch of hypocrites you people are! If Palin is unfit to be VP, then Obam is unfit to be the President. And the stories about Ayres are going to continue to come out as the press continues to "vet" Obama. I prefer to keep my money in my pockets, not have them distributed to lazy, shiftless bums, thanks you very much!

Palin should say. I am honored to be selected by McShame but, I humbly regret that I can not accept the nomination as his VP. I think that is what she should say. I bet she didn't think that the media would come at her so hard but, that is what you get when you run for public office especially for one as important as the VP. Palin has a beautiful family and they can not accept all the stress and rumor that are going on about them now. We see what happen to families once their lives become public. Save your family and don't suffer them to go through all this for McShame. He is trying to be slick but, the people are not falling for it. They are already hip to the republicans tactics.

It's fine to say that the kids are off limits, but who is putting them out in public within the camera's view? Not the Democrats! The RNC set up that photo op with the hockey player and McCain today-stop blaming Obama for Palin's stupidity. I don't want to look at this kid who fills his blog with the F-word. I could care less if he has children by two girls...he insists he doesn't want any. Guess he got tangled up with the wrong girl. But then, he'll probably get to live in the VP mansion and have servants..not bad for a guy who hasn't finished high school. I think this IS an issue because who will be paying for child care and room and board for the happy little family? The taxpayers?
Palin needs to go back to Alaska and return to national politics when she and her kids are grown up.

Amazing. When Republicans are asked about Palin's qualifications to be Vice President, let alone President if McCain kicks the bucket, they reply by saying Obama is not qualified and he's running for President.

So, in essence the braindead argument here is that since they think the Democrats are running what they think is a less than qualified candidate, it's ok fo the Republicans to foist a _totally_ unqualified candidate on the country.

This is the epitome of political stupidity.

Bush has put this country in termoil and he realy thinks that he did a good job. Palin might be ok, however mckane is just like Bush, knowing that Mckane is going down the same road as Bush. Why would anyone vote for him? That to me is not in the best interest of our country. Evidentley Bush did not know what he was doing but he won because of popularity. that is what we are voting for ,popularity ,not a leader. Obama gave up alot to try and help the country, give him a chance.

To be a VP I'd have to be away from home much more than now and that is truly a lot so, I'm backing down.

Proud and fulltime Mom with a Capitol M. I am not parttime.

In regards to the "Experience" issue of Obama and Palin, there are two major differences. Barack Obama won the democratic primary because millions of Americans voted for him and have confidence in his ability to be an outstanding leader. Sarah Palin was chosen by ONE man who may not have chosen the best person from his party to be on the GOP ticket. Obama has shown that he has people working with him that are competent and helped him manage a successful campaign with hundreds of millions of dollars donated to it, to me this is an indication of how he will pick his Cabinet. McCain's choice of Sarah Palin shows that clearly he did not think through his decision. Senator McCain served our country proudly and was blessed to come back in one piece, but everyone knows that that kind of truama always cause some type of flashbacks. I have heard through the media from people that know his, that he has had tempermental outburst on many diferent occasions. Now in the twilight of his years, do we really want him to be the one to answer the phone three o'clock in the morning?

Griff   September 3rd, 2008 7:18 pm ET

McCain will blame the media for some of Palin's problems. The Republicans do not like when their candidate is under scrutiny Obama put up with it for months and months.

McCain's campaign needs to quit whining. They are a campaign of whiners.

Take it from me, a woman, if she is a woman, she can handle it. It will get a lot rougher, get used to it. Take it like a woman. If she wants the job, she needs to be tough. She has only taken a small amount of national scrutiny compared to Hillary.

She's one of those who preaches "DO AS I SAY, NOT AS I DO"
Look at what a mess her family is in. A hubby with 2 DUI's on his record, a teen daughter who is 5 months pregnant and don't forget her "Troopergate" investigation she, herself is in. She needs to "reform" her own family values...not the rest of us...

LAWells   September 3rd, 2008 7:11 pm ET

I'm not sure that Governor Palin can say anything in her speech that could truly help with most independants or wavering democrats. Much more justice could have been served for her if she or Senator McCain would have given more details of her accomplishments, views, and anything else of relevance. It is so beyond being overdue that grand ole party stop treating Americans as stupid or ignorant people that don't deserve respect. Why do they have a problem of talking about a woman that no one, outside of the Capital Beltway or Alaska, has ever heard of before her nomination? Why do they drag things into the arena of sexism? Is it to avoid answering questions that can't answer and if they can answer then why the delay for a speech? Best guess is that typical rhetoric and avoidance what they know best. I'll say this, the average person knows that if you want a job that you should approach that potential employer with respect and humility. The first thing that you do is introduce yourself, during the interview/hiring process you answer questions, and at the end your usually allowed to give a speech (usually about yourself or your goals). What part don't they get? The position of President and Vice President are jobs. This is the interview/hire phase. The employers are the American voters, we decide who gets hired (or do we?, hard to tell from how they are conducting this process) . So far, they have failed to impress this employer and I won't hire them to watch paint dry, let alone become President and Vice President of the United States of America.

Palin will probably give a good red-meat speech and galvanize her base. It will also galvanize the Obama/Biden base, helping us to continue to see her for what she is and is not. It will also be a healthy reminder of how sad a man McCain has become, reduced to picking a running-mate dictated to him by Rush, Rove and the far-right.

SHE NEEDS TO SAY – NO I WASN'T VETTED PROPERLY. YES I WAS AND AM FOR EARMARKS. YES I AM FORING MY DAUGHTER TO MARRY. AND FINALLY SHE SHOULD SAY – TAKE THIS JOB AND SHOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Always Been 4 Obama   September 3rd, 2008 6:50 pm ET

She needs to say things that she won't say.

She will say what they have been practicing with her since her nomination. Think about it. Where has she been? Let me tell you where she's been. In a dark room being schooled by top GOP advisers on every issue so that she sounds like she knows what she's saying. Think about it.

No Hillary = No Obama   September 3rd, 2008 6:49 pm ET

SHe needs to say she's not the 2nd coming; she needs to say she's not a know-it-all; she needs to say she never belonged to a racist church or questioned her country; she needs to say she's as entitled to be in succession to the Presidency as Jabbering Joe Biden; she needs NOT to tell you what you want to hear – she needs to be real – and she will be.

curtis in WI   September 3rd, 2008 6:44 pm ET

For the good of McCain's candidacy, for the good of the party, for the good of her family and for the good of the country she needs to say only 13 words:

"I am withdrawing from consideration as the Republican Vice Presidential nominee, effective immediately".

They will never be said however.

David   September 3rd, 2008 6:40 pm ET

If Obama was playing the race card like Palin is playing the gender card the media and the opposition would freak out, stop giving Palin a free ride.

Max   September 3rd, 2008 6:33 pm ET

She may say whatever she's told to say. I am deaf and wish to stay so.

Louise   September 3rd, 2008 6:31 pm ET

This woman needs to say somjething honest. Being a politician, the chances of that happening are zero to none.

Ms. Rene   September 3rd, 2008 6:31 pm ET

There is nothing she can say. Yes, what is happening in her family is private – but speaks volumes about her philosophy. However, proves the point that birth control should have been taught – for obviously just teaching about abstinence did not work. She cannot govern her own household – and McBush wants to put in her the position of a 'heartbeat' from being in total charge. Only one word – SCARY!!!!!!

Mr Bubbles   September 3rd, 2008 6:28 pm ET

Nothing. I guess she could always do what the Replublicans do when they have nothing to say about our Country... Speak on the Dems and Obama. That seems to be all they talk about, what experience Obama does not have but I guess a Gov that has 7,000 people that has no Foreign policy experience can lead our Country. If the Dems dont rip this hockey mom apart speaking of Joe' then we should loose this race to the same people thats killing this Country. Dems cant act scared yeah she is a woman but she is equal so Joe... " RIP HER APART"!

LP   September 3rd, 2008 6:27 pm ET

Theory: Sarah Palin sees nothing wrong with her pregnant teenage daughter marrying as a result of her accidental pregnancy because she herself was pregnant when she married Bristol's father. They wed on 8/29/88 and their son Track was born circa (oddly, all one can find online is a conjectured day of birth, which is very unusual–although the month appears to be confirmed) 4/20/89. It's possible that he was just shy of exactly 8 months of gestation at birth, but my guess would be that they didn't (as the official spin goes) elope to avoid an expensive wedding–they eloped because she was pregnant.

Undecided   September 3rd, 2008 6:27 pm ET

Nobody will fix this country's problems anytime soon. Her like anyone else will just be a cog in the wheel. This year her state is goving out a $2000 plus dividend and a $1200 energy check to each Alaska resident. What is your state doing for you? Don't hate the person and don't be jealous. By the way, Alaska is not a small state. It's 1/5 the size of the rest of the U.S.

A American   September 3rd, 2008 6:24 pm ET

You people need to grow. The Congress has a approval rate of less than 20 %. Who do you think controls congress . Give you two guesses, first one doesn't. Why not get someone from outside of Washington to try to get this country back to a respectable nation . You don't do that buy pork barrel spenting like the bridge to nowhere. The money being spent for the war is being spent to protect the troops from being killed. Vet Nam had more caualities, and made this country alot stronger. Again Grow Up .

Kate, Atlanta   September 3rd, 2008 6:23 pm ET

So what if she can stand on stage and say the words they give her. When is she going to be made available to the press (and I don't mean Fix News) for some real on her feet thinking. When does she have to answer about troopergate and her earmarks and her support of that famous bridge while the MN bridge fell into the river.

Thomas Baird   September 3rd, 2008 6:22 pm ET

Palin is mostly a unknown I didnt hear of hear untill recently then after about a 2 years of campaigning she shows upand wants to be VP and maybe President. Give me a break.Palins fast paced rise to power. Alaska PTA, Mayor,Governor, then picked to be a possible VP that could make her actually the President if something happened to McCain. Talk about a fast pase track to power.in a very short amount of time. Palin would of made a good qualified secretary of energy but now your talking about the VP. Slow down and make sure she has been completly vetted in all area of her life and her relation, friends. etc.In other words her life story. From day one.

Hypocrisy is the name of the game   September 3rd, 2008 6:19 pm ET

I'm sure she will do a great job after all that coaching. When she is on talk shows and doing one to one interviews would be more interesting. I would like to know how she really thinks in unguarded moments.................this is something you can't fake. From what I've read so far her past has many grey areas and McCain showed poor judgement for not vetting Gov Palin.

Jeffrey   September 3rd, 2008 6:18 pm ET

What she needs to say is that she's sorry for having the gall to think she's was qualified, suitable, prepared for the VP position.

Thomas Baird   September 3rd, 2008 6:14 pm ET

The Speech that will make or break her chances to win? No Pressure right. Palin better have the best of speech writers. Will she read it from the monitor or will she have it memorized. Again no pressure on her to give a out standing speech. As if all she has to do it give a great speech and then she is in. Give me a break. Its not that simple. McCain cant give great speeches and look where He is.The Republican Nominee. What if McCain hadnt run for President who do you think would of been the Nominee. Id say Romney but Romney isnt even on the ticket.

Lori Gimmer   September 3rd, 2008 6:10 pm ET

The woman has NO foreign policy experience. Being a hockey mom, member of the PTA and her strong anti-choice position certainly don't make her anywhere near qualified for the VP position! This is ridiculous. I can't wait for November 4 when the democrats take back our country and Barrack Obama becomes our next president. Enough is enough!

Just my thoughts   September 3rd, 2008 6:09 pm ET

job of Senator = making suggestions and getting bills voted on by majority..the buck does not stop with you...you basically only get to make suggestions to how things will be done and try to convince others to go along.

job of Mayor, Governor and President =buck stops here...the three offices have that in common. When it is all said and done the final decision is in the hands of who is in one of these offices (not the council, not the cabinet).

Neither Obama, Biden or McCain have that type of experience as a Senator...Palin does...little town mayor or State governor...doesn't matter. Issues are similar. Budgets are budgets, taxes are taxes...contrary to what a lot of men think, in this particular case size does not matter. (Yes that is a sexist remark!)

SANDY -PA

WELL SAID !

Are you kidding me Palin?!?   September 3rd, 2008 6:09 pm ET

Let's not sweep this one under the carpet. As a once teenage mother, I am appalled that anyone republican can say that Palins personal life should have nothing to do with this election. If she can't be a positive roll model for her own daughter particularly on safe sex issues, what makes you think she can be a positive role model and make a difference in our country? What kind of example are we setting for all the teenage girls when the vice president is basically saying "It's o.k that your un-wed teenage daughter had unprotected sex and got pregnant." Fyi how the heck does anyone expect not to involve your personal life and family when you intend on filling such large shoes. C'mon now!! Mark my words Palin has plenty more secrets hiding about... and as a proud American I intend on finding out just as everyone else does. ITS OUR RIGHT!!! It's a disgrace to even compare her to Hilary! As a Hillary supporter, as a "women" supporter I would NEVER even consider Palin for VP... I will now vote OBAMA! God bless....

geeta dharmarajan   September 3rd, 2008 6:08 pm ET

re: Palin.

Palin *must* defend her record re: animals, when she was governor. America can gain its moral high ground only when all lifeforms are treatedwell and with basic decency. Killing defenceless animals from low flying aircraft is not ethical. Period.

Mac in Denver   September 3rd, 2008 6:05 pm ET

It doesn't much matter. Everyone seems to have their mind made up already. But I will listen, anyway.

somewhere in TX   September 3rd, 2008 6:05 pm ET

What she needs to say is that she is going to work to end corruption in America, that she is for change, and that she is not going to let
the liberal/ media influence what she does.
Enough of the smearing already. This whole thing is just petty. A Smear campaign. Can't anyone see this iall happening because the Dems are afraid of her?

mk   September 3rd, 2008 6:03 pm ET

You don't really expect her to do more than give an excellent speech that someone else wroter for her do you?
I am not sure what all the hoopla is. I am pretty sure she can give a speech.

family first   September 3rd, 2008 6:02 pm ET

She needs to decline the nomination for VP based on her inexperience in Washington. Sorry, but if she has not had "both hands on the wheel" for over ten years when it comes to her family, how can she keep "both hands on the wheel" when it comes to our great country. This is not being "sexist"; ANY person should consider family first before political gains.

RapidRay   September 3rd, 2008 6:01 pm ET

Would someone please call the Alaskan State Police.

The Palin kids are truant...and mom is contributing to the delinquency of minors.

Andrea   September 3rd, 2008 6:00 pm ET

Well for me at least she needs to explain how a parent could subject their child to the type of cruel scrutiny she has subjected her poor daughter to. It is beyond me how any parent could put their own ambition before their family. If this is a glimpse into her judgment, character, and ability to lead then I'm very afraid.

Why not this excuse...   September 3rd, 2008 5:59 pm ET

What Paln needs to say...

"I'm stepping aside to let a truly qualified and capable candidate run for the vice presidency. I will be returning to Alaska."

Lucy Baker   September 3rd, 2008 5:58 pm ET

Uhmmmm, no one but no one that I can see or hear has mentioned the enviroment???

You remember the planet and only planet we have. The one we are now compromising with wars, global warming, screwed up Bush policies............

Sarah Palin............"Goodby world"... .........Oh, and by the way the polar bears are just fine...........we saw some on our snowmobile race.....I even offered them a moose burger.......

Sandy - PA   September 3rd, 2008 5:56 pm ET

How about if she tells the truth and says: "I admit I don't have any experience and was only selected because I am a woman and the Republican party saw an opportunity to get votes from former Hillary Clinton supporters. I decline the vice presidential nomination, in order to care for my children."

Focus   September 3rd, 2008 5:56 pm ET

Stop being so sexist America and focus on what she has or has not done in her job and whether she is capable of delivering as a VP. I don't see any negative mention about Obama not devoting 100% of his time to his daughters.

gene   September 3rd, 2008 5:55 pm ET

I think Palin needs justify what she's thinking while urging her MINOR daughter to become engaged and get married.

Look at the statistics... people aren't mature enough to be married at that age.. and those marriages fail well over 50% of the time.

Ok.. so she's having a kid... which she's definitely not mature enough to have... but that's done... but, marriage is also a lifelong commitment and i'd like to see what her justification is for pushing her daughter into a commitment which she's WAY too young and immature to make.

Grant   September 3rd, 2008 5:55 pm ET

She needs to say that she can perform just as well as Obama with a teleprompter, acting lessons and training from Hollywoods best casting directors....She needs to be asking who is this guy from nowhere, the improbable creation of some backroom boys network and what is their Agenda? How did an unknown defeat the most power political family in the country? Besides being primped for the Presidency before even being elected to national office, what has he done in the Senate besides run for the Presidency? Something is behind this guy.....what? The GOP hatchet men are digging.....Obama is a "Hollywood Boy Band" who is his Agent? Ever notice that when he speaks without the teleprompter he hums, haws and ums worse than GW?

Alexis   September 3rd, 2008 5:53 pm ET

Lets really look at the experience comparison:

Obama:
B.A in political science from Columbia University, with a specialization in international relations
J.D. in Law from Hardvard, graduated magna cum laude; President of the Harvard Law Review
12 years (92-04) teaching constitutional law
7 years State Senator: sponsored more than 800 bills
4 years Senator for Illinos, a state with 12.8 million people

Palin:
Bachelor's in journalism from University of Idaho
4 years Wasilla City Council (8000 people)
6 years Wasilla mayor (8000 people)
1 year "Ethics Commissioner of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission"
20 months governor of a state with 660,000 people

Do the Repubs really think we're so stupid that we would believe she is more experienced than Obama? Give me a break…

Unshrub   September 3rd, 2008 5:51 pm ET

Maybe this is just another one of McCains jokes, like the ads he ran about Obama and God. THey weren't funny either.

curtis41   September 3rd, 2008 5:50 pm ET

It really dusts the Democrats that McCain, a Republican, is really the agent of change, with his selection of Governor Sarah Palin. Obama had a chance for change, and elected instead, to appoint Joe Biden as his VP choice, an insider. It is too bad that the only way for them to get around her is to discredit her at every level. That is a lot easier than explaining to the voters what "economic justice" is. Or the fact that Obama has virtually no credentials to be Commander-in-Chief. If he was willing to pull out the troops before Iraq could handle its own security and politics, how can he lead anything, other than maybe a band. It is dangerous for a republic to have a leader with a cut and run mentality and not the will to press against terrorists so they do not harm our friends, or come again onto our soil. McCain is FAR above Obama on that front. Obama's economics are pie in the sky and would damage our economy, McCain's plans got better reviews from leading economists. Palin has more experience on energy, energy policies and hands on executive experience than the top of the democratic ticket. No wonder the attacks on Palin and McCain are so vicious. Notice, you will not hear Palin complain about the rough and tumble of politics. She has two qualities that her opponents lack, she is a conservative and she has a brain. Oh, one more, she is NOT a socialist and thinks government should help those it serves, and not the other way around. No wonder she poses such a threat to the Democrats in this election! McCain/Palin in November.

Mary   September 3rd, 2008 5:50 pm ET

If Sarah Palin is so prolife that she would not consider aborting a Down's Syndrome fetus, and she gave birth to him, then she needs to stay home and take care of him. It's called MOTHERING. Down's children need a lot of attention and constant supervision. If she is elected VP...Then is it MY responsiblity as a tax payer to pay for her child's care? I don't think so...Is this what she and her husband call family values? She needs to search deep, find some common sense and step down.

Douglas, Los Angeles California   September 3rd, 2008 5:49 pm ET

She needs to say what the republican plan is to put this country back on the right track. She needs to be honest and stay away from empty attacks. We are smarter voters this year... most of us can care less whether she is a woman or not or that she has a pregnant daughter. And she needs to get on the Sunday talk shows and let us see and hear what she is all about and her plans for this country.

ba   September 3rd, 2008 5:48 pm ET

"SHE " will say whatever is written for her to say! does anyone mention that she didn't write this speech? a bit of input sure. but it's truly what fred thompson would call a "teleprompter" speech. i doubt however that you'll hear it referred to that way tonight. oh by the way mr. thompson, obama actually wrote his own speech ... imagine that?!

sick of it   September 3rd, 2008 5:48 pm ET

I am a republican and very sick of this circus. What she needs to say is that she has no business being the vp. My god enough is enough.

thomas   September 3rd, 2008 5:48 pm ET

Here's the agenda for government reform as presented by the Bush administration:
The government acted on almost none of the pressing issues tearing at the fabric of American prosperity. Instead they moved legislation at a snails pace with little regard for major issues or growing problems. They spearheaded their own projects. They used spending bills to sneak in favored earmarks. They failed to read the legislation before voting on it. Bills favoring defense, banking, oil, and pharmaceuticals sailed through congress. Social initiatives were repeatedly stonewalled or killed in committee before reaching the floor. They catered to campaign contributors, corporations and lobbyists while ignoring constituent calls for action on major issues. National goals and priorities were undefined. No plan to target resources or development toward the needs of the nation. Government bogged down by politics and scandal. Legislation mired in procedure, tradition and protocol.

Follow along tonight to see how Governor Palin does.

ASIAN GUY   September 3rd, 2008 5:47 pm ET

The ball is round–anything can happen now till election day...

Michael in Houston   September 3rd, 2008 5:47 pm ET

What she needs to say is "I said yes to this crazy idea thinking all the Hillary supporters were going to jump ship because I am a woman and it looks like that is not going to happen so I am resigning my nomination as VP, going back to Alaska and deal with my teenage daughter and fight the abuse of power charge against me so I wont be the next Republican jailed. John, thank you for believing in me but I am not fit for the job as VP or for whatever a VP does Thank you an good night". I estimate this speech to be about 15 seconds.

Moe, NY   September 3rd, 2008 5:47 pm ET

She needs to say that she is stepping down. Actually, I wouldn't believe anything that comes out of her mouth...I just don't trust the lady. She appears to be from another era as far as most American women are concerned.

Brendolyn   September 3rd, 2008 5:46 pm ET

She should say she was so flattered that she temporarily lost her head and accepted the invitation. Now that she's had time to think it over she's realized that her newborn special needs baby needs her and always will. Yes, she has been a mayor and a governor but that does not mean she is in any way ready to be Vice President of the U.S. The fact that she doesn't realize that she's being used calls her intelligence into question. If she does realize she's being used then that calls her self respect into question. The fact that she's perfectly content to leave a newborn special needs baby behind while she runs around the country campaigning and possibly, if her ticket wins, moves to D.C., calls her character into question. Anyway I look at her, I'm not happy with what I'm seeing. As for McCain, carefully orchestrating this choice for V.P. is alarming to me. He deliberately went against what his party advised him to do. Does that also mean he would not be willing to listen to his advisors once he was in Office?

Texans for Obama   September 3rd, 2008 5:44 pm ET

I kind of feel sorry for this woman. She was placed in a postion that she didn't have a clue what was about to hit her.

She is probably a good woman, and mother but that is not enough to get most women's votes. She is not a Hillary Clinton. She needs to wait until her children are grown to run for an office like the VP. Her children needs her now, not a nanny. Sometimes young girls become pregnant to get attention from there parents.

This woman needs to raise her children. I am a woman that raised five children and it is not an easy task. So, Mrs. Palin stay in Alaska and raise your children first. I as a woman would respect you more for being a mother first.

Sarah   September 3rd, 2008 5:43 pm ET

What a bunch of nasty comments. Quite an accomplishment for her to become Governor of Alaska.

Brian   September 3rd, 2008 5:43 pm ET

Obama has been vetted by the media in the public eye for over a year and a half and has emerged with flying colors.

Now the republicans are crying foul because Palin has undergone the same treatment for 5 days.

Perhaps because her process hasn't gone so smoothly?

GIVE ME A BREAK! No more GOP garbage!

Mark   September 3rd, 2008 5:42 pm ET

By the way, McCain complained three different times about the 11.9 million in earmarks that Wasilla got after Palin hired a federal lobbyist.

No way, no how!   September 3rd, 2008 5:42 pm ET

I find that McCain's decisions and actions are the most arrogant and sexist I have ever seen from a Presidential candidate ever, and I have seen many! I'm a former Hillary supporter, and not for one minute am I going to buy that Palin is an interchangeable substitue for the policies of integrity that Hillary stood so strongly behind.

Palin is almost entirely against all women's rights. She has no idea on any of the other important issues such as the economy, the War, lack of affordable & attainable healthcare for all, the broken social security system, the housing crisis, foreign relations, etc..

My full support is behind Obama and Biden because if a ticket doesn't believe in the advancement of women's issues, Women's issues WILL NOT ADVANCE & we can't afford to wait 4 more years just to wait and see..

There is more to the Sarah Palin story than we are hearing. She has been involved in TWO abuse of power scandals, one as mayor of Wasilla, and one as Governor. Both involved her firing people for no apparent reason, and both appeared to potentisally be for political reasons. As mayor she fired the police chief and the library director- that's right, the library director. When city council threatened to remove her as mayor, she allowed the library director to have her job back, but not the police chief. When she was asked why she fired the chief, she said on record "You know in your heart when someone doesn't fully support you..." Really. This is fact. She also hired a federal lobbyist in order to obtain earmarks for her town. As a result, Wasilla obtained $11.9 million in earmark money for a town of less than 10,000 people. That equals out to more than $1000 for every man, woman, and child in the town. What was all this money for? Weapons, among other things, also to help improve the quality of their lake water. I'm sure they have a real problem with that up there in the virgin Alaskan wilderness...

She needs to say, "With all the outstanding questions about my ethics and behavior as an elected leader, my presence on the Republican ticket in 2008 is an unfair burden to John McCain, and I will not be a candidate for vice president of the United States."

Emster   September 3rd, 2008 5:39 pm ET

Could we get something straight on the 'executive experience' thing? It's like everyone (including the media) has forgotten that we have 3 branches of government: executive, legislative and judicial. Obama has legislative experience. So fussing about how someone else has 'more executive experience' says nothing about how much more leadership or government experience they have. And city council member and part-time mayor might be executive experience, but they're on a trivial scale when you're comparing it to state and national legislative experience. So enough with that argument – and can we please move on to focusing on real issues in this campaign?

Cheap Trick   September 3rd, 2008 5:39 pm ET

She is on a tight rope. She must look strong, state her positions, address her critics, and get ready to be run out of town.

She needs to explain her relationship with the Alaska Independence Party and also make public, as was for Obama, her controversial pastor's sermon's. The huffington post has a great video of this cult leader.

The question is could the unthinkable happen. Everyone is talking about her withdrawing...but really would the entire ticket have to call it quits. If she goes so goes McCain's judgment.

This has taken away any chance I would vote for ticket, no matter what comes out about Obama.

Sarah Bell, Cleveland OH   September 3rd, 2008 5:38 pm ET

How dare the McCain campaign belittle the accomplishments of Senator Barack Obama. This is just a Republican scandal to destroy the first black presidential nominee. It's racist to question Obama's experience. And what flat out bigotry to raise questions about Obama's business dealings, political affiliations and his bipartisan record. Racist! Racist racist racist. (See how this works everyone?) You are witnessing the key piece of the Palin package. Use a woman to paint the entire media as sexist in the hopes that woman will be dumb enough not to see through this obvious pandering. Rallying your party base might have worked. Grabbing PUMA's ten members probably worked. But this will not work. Eat your own mooseburgers GOP. Cause I've had ENOUGH!! Anyone but McCain '08!

I'm also not sure how all the talk we're going to hear is going to change anything for the next term. Talk is cheap. Republicans, Democrats whatever your affiliation.... Our country is in trouble. She needs to address all the rumors – however, not in this speech. This speech should be for the people in the room and anyone else who'll listen.

I'm a democrat, so it doesn't really matter to me. However, once the speech is over, the McCain camp needs to let her loose (notice not one interview since becoming the VP candidate) to address everything that has been said. My gut tells me she won't be able to talk about the ethics case as that is still open and she's hired a lawyer. But she can talk about her view on abortion, or no abortion even in the case of rape and incest. I'd also like to know the REAL truth behind the "bridge to nowhere". It has been reported that she was initially in favor of it prior to being against it. What most concerns me is the reported Alaskan Indpendence thing that supposedly they favored seceeding from the union. That's what I'd like hear.

JustMyObservation   September 3rd, 2008 5:32 pm ET

Do the Republicans really think we're so stupid that we would believe she is more experienced than Obama? Give me a break…

Don Fitzgerald   September 3rd, 2008 5:32 pm ET

As a staunch Senator Obama supporter, I am disappointed that anyone would bash, any candidate for the mistakes of their children. That is unacceptable. Governor Palin has some explaining to do, concerning her interference with a state trooper's career, or with some of the pork she sought and received, for her state, but that is it, matters concerning the governing of our country, not matters that concern her children's lives. Let everyone stick to the issues: the slaughter in Iraq, the Bank Mortgage scandal, the public handouts that are being discussed by the Automakers, or the Airlines. Let's us discuss our future with competent leadership, such as Senators Obama and Biden. They will pull America out of the ditch, in which, the Bush-McCain Republicans have stranded us !!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

"I regretfully decline your nomination"

Ellie   September 3rd, 2008 5:30 pm ET

My Friends...

I'm deeply honored and humble that I have been selected as Sen. McCain's Vice President.

However, as honored as I am, I respectfully decline my nomination.

I am a MOTHER first and politician SECOND. Therefore, I respectfully decline this nomination. My family is THEE most important thing in my life and right NOW my baby needs me and my TEENAGE DAUGHTER BRISTOL needs me more now than ever before. As honored and grateful as I am, I graciously appreciate all the warm support from all of you. However, these are trying times for my family and I need to return to Alaska as Governor and insure that my daughter's needs are met and protected.

I hope you will respect this painful decision, but this is NOT RIGHT for me right now. Maybe later on down the line, but not NOW.

Thank you and God Bless...
Sarah Palin

nerakami   September 3rd, 2008 5:29 pm ET

It is VERY irrelevant what she says... as actions speak so much louder than words.

She's manipulating her daughter's situation for her own political gains. There ain't too much you can say about that.

Alice   September 3rd, 2008 5:29 pm ET

I am so sick of hearing the experience comparison between her and Obama. Obama is a brilliant Harvard-trained lawyer who spent the last 18 months being grilled on – and studying – every aspect of our economy, foreign policy, national security, etc., after which he was nominated by 18 million+ people. Sarah Palin is a feisty-yet-conservative wilderness gal whose knowledge base is limited to the unique issues of a unique state, and who was nominated by one man. Knowledge clearly outweighs so-called experience.

Chris S.   September 3rd, 2008 5:28 pm ET

Can any one say PHOTO OPTof her duaghter and fiance!!!! This is getting juicier everyday. Soon we can replace the taploids with Sara Palin's closet trash!!!

Ex-Republican for Obama   September 3rd, 2008 5:27 pm ET

will she tell us about her desire to secede from the union?
Will she tell us why she said 'no to the bridge to nowhere" but kept the money anyways?
Will she tell us how she is for reform, but has hired her own lobbyists in washington and taken pork belly money?
Or perhaps a bit of an explanation about the abuse of power?
Maybe she can let us in on how she hates Big Oil...and introduce her hubby, the guy who works for Big Oil.
Maybe she can show us her degree in Journalism, and woo us with how much that really means.
Perhaps she can let us in on her views in regards to bringing up a family that has morals, such as no 'premarital sex'...because she's a family values type lady.

Maybe...but maybe she will mention Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama in her speech instead....That will show us what kind of character she has and what the true issues are indeed.

You be the judge.

ReaganRepub   September 3rd, 2008 5:26 pm ET

Hmmm, she can say . . . uh, sorry, my unwed, pregnant daughter really needs me now and I have to raise my special needs child, I think Kay Bailey Hutchison is available.

I am so insulted by my party.

Mike Bulmer   September 3rd, 2008 5:25 pm ET

@JOE KILOZ

Why do you post like that in every single article here? Is that how people really write?

Concerned INDEPENDENT CT voter   September 3rd, 2008 5:25 pm ET

Reform a washington that McCain has been such a great "leader/uniter" for almost 30yrs? & the one McCain thinks is good 90% of the time?

-V

ps. That Washington?

Patty, Big Bear, CA   September 3rd, 2008 5:25 pm ET

What she needs to say is.....PSYCH!!!!

Blunt Trauma   September 3rd, 2008 5:25 pm ET

She needs to demonstrate that she is READY on Day 2.

We're not grading her on a curve ... this is the big leagues.

From her speech I want to know that she is superior to

Condi Rice
Christine Whitman
Rob Portman
Tim Pawlenty
Mitt Romney
Mike Huckabee
Kay Bailey Hutchinson
Olympia Snowe

What is her approach to America's vulnerability to petro-dictators given our use of 25% of the worlds oil with only 3% of it's capacity?

You can't drill our way out of that so her pat answer about drilling in off shore and ANWAR ( which is opposite McCain's last position) won't make a difference.

What are the military implications of this, Ms. Alaska Ntional Guard Commander-in-Chief?

CeeJay1   September 3rd, 2008 5:25 pm ET

What Palin needs to say: "I respectfully decline the nomination."

DIRTY OBAMA   September 3rd, 2008 5:24 pm ET

This woman is so SPECIAL. Love ya Sarah!

Greg-Mpls   September 3rd, 2008 5:23 pm ET

I humbly withdraw, so McCain has a remote chance

D   September 3rd, 2008 5:23 pm ET

I wonder will she remember everything they told her to say. Talk about a crash course in politics. Makes you wonder about McCain's decision making ability.

Colo Sprgs, CO   September 3rd, 2008 5:23 pm ET

For the good of the party and our chances to win this year's election, I respectfully decline the nomination, and I urge you to pick Mitt Romney.

McCain = Bush 3rd term   September 3rd, 2008 5:23 pm ET

She's going to say a lot, but it's all a scam. The Republicans don't have one ounce of substance on their ticket. Not one ounce!

DMM   September 3rd, 2008 5:22 pm ET

She'll say whatever they told her to say. What will be interesting will be her first interview. Very dangerous for her.

R.M.   September 3rd, 2008 5:22 pm ET

Palin just needs to say one thing: "What the hell am I doing here? I QUIT!!"

Ex-PUMA 4 Obama   September 3rd, 2008 5:22 pm ET

Well, that's all good and dandy that she will tell us about herself. And I feel she's going to do a wonderful job and excite the Republicans.

-BUT-

Why would the American people want to vote Republican again when the last eight years of Republican rule has been devastating.

The senseless war has caused our gas prices to soar, our American people can't keep food on the table, our children are having to return home from school due to increased tuition, our jobs have move to other countries, we are not safe in America anymore, ……..I can on and on.

Think about it…do we really want to risk the next four years like this? It's already going to take years to fix this mess and if the Republicans take office again we are just stupid Americans (sorry to say).

So would you rather vote for someone with a funny name that his mother gave him or do you want to continue living again for the next four years of living hell.

Sleep on it………I did.

Ex-PUMA 4 Obama

I AM COMPLETELY CONVINCED THAT IF JUDAS WERE A REPUB. AND RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT. THE REPUB WOULD SPIN HIM AS TRUSTWORTHY, LOYAL AND PATRIOTIC.

ron   September 3rd, 2008 5:20 pm ET

Honestly, I really do not care what she or any other Repub has to say – I do not like there stgances on almost all of the issues and that why they do not get my vote. It has nothing to do with their plumbing etc.

Sherry, Atlanta   September 3rd, 2008 5:20 pm ET

IT'S NOT WHAT YOU SAY. . . BUT WHAT YOU DO!

WHAT PALIN HAS DONE, IS QUESTIONABLE!

This will be a joke...thank you so much, Republicans, for putting your foot in your own mouth....
make way for some real change!!

Julie   September 3rd, 2008 5:17 pm ET

She needs to say holy cow (or is it moose) I am in over my head!!!!
Maybe by now she knows what the role of the VP is!!!
I think she has many people telling her what to say, how to stand, what to look like!!!!

S. Boatman   September 3rd, 2008 5:17 pm ET

She Needs To Say That She Doesnt Accept The Nomination Because She Needs A Few More Years To Build Her Resume!

shadowgovernment   September 3rd, 2008 5:17 pm ET

What could possibly be said that hasn't been said already?

Chris   September 3rd, 2008 5:17 pm ET

What she needs to say? What she needs to say is she is not qualified for this job!!! She is a pawn in a political game that she should have never got involved in. She has put her family last for some lime light in the aspirations of greatness of a Napoleon complex little man.
McCain is comfortable with her because he is slightly taller than she is. I mean really how akward would it have been to see him and let say Mit on the stage. LOL
Trust me this little man knows what he is doing this for. LOL

True Republican   September 3rd, 2008 5:16 pm ET

How about explaining how she raised her daughter up to become yet another statistic of teenage, unmarried pregnancy! I was all for McCain and have voted GOP for year, but this is just too much. Sorry. No GOP vote from this solid Republican this year.

MARY,FLORIDA   September 3rd, 2008 5:16 pm ET

Why am I here again?Oh ya thats right Im here for nomination of VP.What dose the VP do anyways?

Reflect2020   September 3rd, 2008 5:15 pm ET

She can be honest and say:

I’m a hypocrite. Do what I say and not what I do. So I fit in this party very well.

Lesley, Lighthouse Point, FL   September 3rd, 2008 5:15 pm ET

This is outrageous. She will talk about being a mayor of a tiny little country town like that has anything to do with running the most powerful country in the world?? She hasn't even been the governor of this small state for two years. This is a joke.

Chris   September 3rd, 2008 5:14 pm ET

Yes, maybe she can tell us why she is interfering in the ethics investigation that is being conducted against her.

Peter of Oregon   September 3rd, 2008 5:13 pm ET

So... McCain's campaign wants us to base our approval of Palin on a single speech she makes tonight and not her qualifications and policy positions?

What she needs to say...   September 3rd, 2008 5:13 pm ET

"Im not qualified for this ,and with my newborn and my teen daughter, I need to refocus to my family, and the values I say are so dear, and withdraw from the VP position."

Jason   September 3rd, 2008 5:13 pm ET

"'Everyone in the staff has fallen in love with her,' said this aide."

That's sexist. No one would say that about Obama because he is a man.

Tracy   September 3rd, 2008 5:12 pm ET

She needs to say that while an honor to be asked, due to family and other (political) obligations and issues that have come to light, I need to respectivly resign.

That's what she needs to say but it isn't going to happen.

This is a disaster waiting to happen.

We don't need 4 more years of this.

8 is enough!

Michele   September 3rd, 2008 5:12 pm ET

She could say she knew how to cure cellulite and I wouldn't vote for her!! Snooze.

Mysogonists for Obama   September 3rd, 2008 5:12 pm ET

What can she say? You mean what WILL she say – which is what they tell her to say, and that's all I have to say. Good night!

The only thing I want to hear from her is "I am withdrawing my name as vp candidate because my special needs child, and my family needs me right now, they only have one mother and I will run for office again when I my kids are more self-sufficient."

Family values, all talk and no action.
