Biden said he would debate Palin with respect.
Biden said he would debate Palin with respect.

SARASOTA, Florida (CNN) – Joe Biden again refused to attack the experience of GOP vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin, hours before she was to deliver a speech sharply critical of the Democratic ticket.

At an event in Sarasota, a voter asked Biden how he would debate Palin when she “was not prepared to face an international crisis.”

Biden offered a strong rebuke.

“Well look, the answer is one word: with respect,” he said. “She is the governor of a state. She warrants respect.”

He told the crowded high school gymnasium he would debate Palin on the issues, not on her experience of governor of Alaska.

“It will be determined by what her positions are,” Biden said. “Our disagreements will be based upon how fundamentally, if it is fundamental, and I expect it's likely to be, her views on everything form the Supreme Court, protecting a woman's right, all the way up to ending the war in Iraq. That's what it's going to be based upon.”

CNN why won't you publish my statement to RR?

Biden has a son in the national guard about to be deployed to Iraq and RR says that Palin is a better candidate because her son has joined the Army. RR needs to know that Palin's family is not the only patriotic family in this country.

I'll keep posting it until you uncensor it.

Did you listen to Beau Biden's speech at the DNC? When he asked America to be with his father this fall, because he couldn't? What Beau didn't mention is that the reason he won't be able to be there for his father on the campaign trail is because HE'LL BE IN IRAQ.

Get your facts straight.

I'm so voting for Obama / Biden. Period. When you look at the issues…if you are a working American man or woman….you are NOT voting your pocket book if you vote for those stuffed suit Republicans. It has nothing to do with Sarah Palin - she is a prop in the play for them! Let's face facts.

Obama / Biden - don't fall for their game = keep the high ground…and engage voters!

Tom   September 3rd, 2008 8:26 pm ET

Where is Hillary during all of this? She needs to be the one that comes out firing. Palin is making a mockery out of everything Hillary has done for women. Hopefully Hillary is just waiting for the right time to jump in, which would be this Friday in my opinion.

Exactly   September 3rd, 2008 8:25 pm ET

I affirmatively agree with Joe Biden that we democrats have to face real issues rather than character. I believe nobody will like to be told how good or bad she/he it, though we have eyes and ears or whatever to create a picture,

Obama/biden08!

sophie   September 3rd, 2008 8:25 pm ET

Obama is already keeping his word, before he's even elected.
no trashy politics, and he has stuck to that.
And I am so proud of Joe Biden! Now this is a ticket that truly
respects women and women's rights.
This is the ticket that means what they say!
So proud to be a democrat ,now is our time!
Democrats unite and stay strong!
Obama/Biden!

Linda Marley   September 3rd, 2008 8:25 pm ET

With all this talk about Gov. Palin and whether or not the people will approve of her. Don't we already know that the people did not want Biden to be pres? As far as her having someone write her a speech and reading it off the teleprompter, I believe that's exactly what Obama does, but of course we'll never hear that mentioned. I'm so sick of the media laying off Obama and going after everyone else.
A Democrat who is now Republican.

Dready1rasta   September 3rd, 2008 8:25 pm ET

Mr. Biden may enter the debate planning on showing his opponemt "respect", but once he smells blood in the water………

Brian Seattle   September 3rd, 2008 8:25 pm ET

Isn't it a double standard that Dems need to treat her with kid gloves to avoid a sexism claim? Sorry but at this level of the game it's a cage match, no punches pulled. I think that's what McCain is counting on is a soft Democratic party response so he can claim an Obama soft approach…

Now I laughed when she was announced but we need to lead her like a lamb to the lions gently at first without going too far and having her drop out. If she goes on the offense tonight I think it's a sign to let Biden of the chain. Kid gloves now, bare knuckles later.

Obama/Biden 08-12

p.s. please block these jerks that type all caps and hyphens. It's really irritating.

wow…first Biden takes the train home every night, he is worth far less then McCain(a political professional who has made MILLIONS from LOBBYIST) so i would consider Biden a long time public servant and RR Biden's son is in Iraq to, the only difference is Joe has not told the enemy how to identify his son Like Palin did by talking about her sons tattoos…guess you should refill the medication

James   September 3rd, 2008 8:24 pm ET

Respect, something the Republicans don't have. Let's just insult, lie and twist the truth, and hope mindless America will fall for it. Not this time. Kudos to Biden on being an actual, respectful person, even if this Palin woman isn't.

Perla   September 3rd, 2008 8:24 pm ET

Absolutely correct, Sen. Biden. Treat her with basic respect and then hold her accountable–in no uncertain terms–for her views. Just as Obama is doing with McBush.

Bleek Gilliam   September 3rd, 2008 8:24 pm ET

That's OK Joe, no need to trash her- We already know the scoop since WE are the ones that vetted her.

Stay on the high road with Obama; we've got this handled down here in the trenches!

i am looking forward to hearing sarah palin's speech tonight…my coworkers (all of whom are women) are also looking forward to her speech…we all think it is fantastic that a woman is on a ticket (it's about time don't you think) but still are reserving our judgement to see if she is the right woman…i liked clinton even though i am a republican and would have probably voted for her….but now i don't know if it will really matter who gets elected….i don't think my life will change much…i noticed very little difference…from when clinton was president to when bush became president….this is the real world out here and it is just about putting food on the table that i bought….not what the government hands me…..

Jon   September 3rd, 2008 8:23 pm ET

Okay, then I will slam her.

If Palin fails as a parent, fails in her own home - and a 17 year old pregnant daughter is a failure - how can anybody think she could run the world's most powerful country?

HOW CAN THIS CHARADE STILL BE GOING ON?????????

Bud   September 3rd, 2008 8:20 pm ET

This is one of those occasions where the right thing to do is also the most helpful politically. McCain didn't vet her, the Obama team can launch what they want add wise at anytime, but why do they need to? Every time I flip on the internet something new breaks. Why do they need to spend campaign money on negative adds? The hypocrisy speaks for itself.

Jackson   September 3rd, 2008 8:20 pm ET

Obama and Biden are both fine gentlemen. I as so proud of them..they can let Hillary lose any time they're ready though. She can say whatever she want to. The McSame camp thinks they can fool her supporters into voting for a totally unqualified candidates that would take women's rights away. Those rights were hard fought for! Ii think Hillary will give her a thrashing!

Joe this is ABSOLUTELY CORRECT.

Snarky is the wrong track with this opponent. Her ignorance will need to be teased out. She is on the wrong side of the issues, and that is where she is truly weak.

Her puppetmasters are using everything else about her package to try to dupe you into attacking ANYTHING but her vision for where the country needs to go.

They are MUCH MORE PREPARED

Charlotte   September 3rd, 2008 8:17 pm ET

Mr. Biden is a very respectable and honorable man. Though the opportunity presents itself to highlight Ms. Palin's many shortcomings as a candidate, Joe Biden demonstrates restraint and honor.

America, this shows that we need people like Obama and Biden to lead our country after 8 damaging years perpetrated by the Bush administration!

Sherry for Obama   September 3rd, 2008 8:17 pm ET

Why should they show her any respect?
They are trashing Obama
They are deplorble….I for one have NO respect for her or the repulican party.
They thought they could get the hilary vote and it back fired on her…..
TOO BAD

Robert from CT   September 3rd, 2008 8:17 pm ET

I wonder what her positions are? NO ONE KNOWS!!!!! This speech is a joke as a way for "America to get to know Mrs. Palin."

Hey Media, we need interviews. Please get her on record about some of the issues of our day so we can decide what we think.

Excuse me……..Joe Biden's son Beau, who gave a very nice introductory speech for his father at the Democratic convention and serves as Delaware attorney general, ships out this fall for a tour of duty in Iraq. Please be better informed before spewing out unwarranted attacks.

jim   September 3rd, 2008 8:17 pm ET

RR, I hate to remind you that Biden has a son shipping off to Iraq as well, so don't try to play that card. All the candidates have an offspring in/out of Iraq, except for Obama, would you care to paint him as a hypocrite cause Sasha and Malia aren't off to war?

catmom   September 3rd, 2008 8:17 pm ET

Just heard Bob Dole speak about Palin. He at least said he didn't know her. He also said something very disturbing. He stated that Joe Biden had to be very careful in his debate with her less he appears to be attacking her. Senator Clinton set the bar very high in the debates with the Democrat men. In fact, I felt she won most of them. Since Governor Palin is so experienced and able to run with the big dogs, why is this even an issue? Why should Biden have to temper himself so as not to offend her? If she can't stand one honest debate with Biden then she definitely is not ready for the VP office.

Louis   September 3rd, 2008 8:17 pm ET

I am so appalled that John McCain chose to play politics in an effort to get votes by using an untested woman. As a veteran, it was hard to even support him on views on Iraq but THIS, is unreal. Sarah Palin says "she just wants to serve the nation" she couldn't even serve her daughter with a sense of morality or a prescription on bith control pills or a pack of condoms. I have met John and Cindy many times through veteran events and at a favorite dining place in Glendale, Arizona. If I see him again I intend to tell him how his high ethics for this country have been dismally destroyed in his pick for vp.

Biden's son is deploying to Iraq in October…he just doesnt make a big deal about it, AND…

Having a son or daughter go to Iraq does not make you qualified to be VP. If that was the case there are over 1 million people who have had children sent to Iraq!

Bravo, brilliant., Mr. Biden…let us hold all the candidates to this high moral standard

California Gold   September 3rd, 2008 8:14 pm ET

POINT OF CLARIFICATION:

The position of Governor warrants respect.

To me, speaking as a professional female, Ms. Palin is offensive on all levels, especially by abusing her pregnant teen daughter. Trotting her out and parading this very young girl instead of protecting that child's privacy is tantamount to abuse. I will never respect a woman who has done that to her child.

Sorry Joe. I do not respect Ms. Palin.

Linda31   September 3rd, 2008 8:14 pm ET

Obama-Biden 2008 and 2012   September 3rd, 2008 8:13 pm ET

Vice President Biden, may God grant you grace and wisdom to effectively debate and defeat Gov. Palin, and may he do the same for President Obama so that he can defeat McCain.

"I [ God ] will send my terror ahead of you and throw into confusion every nation you encounter. I will make all your enemies turn their backs and run." - Exodus 23:27

It's time for the American people to get it right and NOT vote for McCain-Palin - who are more of the same - but instead vote for REAL change. It's time for this country to turn the page and seek a new and better future for ourselves and our children. It's time for REAL change in Washington, it's time to elect Barack Obama for president . The Obama-Biden team are wiser and stronger to meet the challenges and solve the problems this nation has, as well as, restore our reputation abroad.

God bless

Please understand that this is a contest, respect and honor yes, but just because she's a women doesn't mean she merits soft pounches. The VP position is not a soft pounch position, when she said yes to the job, that meant she is ready to take on the pouchs. Or she might want to go back home to the 6700 people that she governes. This is not play time. The Republicans are not going to play with us and we need not play with them.
