Dems could pull Lieberman chairmanship

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Sen. Joe Lieberman’s speech before the Republican National Convention Tuesday night could cost Lieberman the chairmanship of a key Senate committee, a top Senate Democratic aide told CNN.

During the speech, the Connecticut senator praised GOP presidential candidate Sen. John McCain and criticizing Democratic nominee Sen. Barack Obama.

"The Democratic Caucus will reassess the situation with Sen. Lieberman after the election,” Jim Manley, a spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, said Wednesday.

Lieberman, the Democratic nominee for vice president in 2000, now calls himself an “independent Democrat,” but he remains a member of the Senate Democratic Caucus which allows him to head the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.

Democrats have grumbled for months about Lieberman’s outspoken support of McCain and both Reid and Obama have warned Lieberman to curb his public criticism of Obama.

“What we saw last night was a culmination of provocative efforts in recent months,” said a Democratic leadership aide.

Democrats, who with Lieberman’s support control the chamber by a narrow 51-49 margin, are unlikely to go a step further and boot Lieberman from their caucus although the Democratic leadership aide didn’t rule out that punitive step if Democrats pick up several seats in November.

    Debby,

Dems are trying to give Sen. Lieberman the benefit of the doubt, as he continues to push respectful limits. I would not blame them for holding him accountable if Joe continues his misguided efforts. It's one thing to be for someone, instead of against another.

Also, McCain is going to face challenges with the Jewish community after reports are released of Palin's pastor using anti-semitic rhetoric, as well as other fundamentalist views.

If Liberman can't be true to his party he should be stripped of his chairmanship. Maybe he should just make it official and become a Republican!

McCain=Bush, 8 is enough: If he is an independent he should not be part of a Democratic committee. You can't have it both ways Lie berman
    ------–

You do realize that independents ultimately selected Obama as the Democratic nominee, don't you? Hillary did win the majority of the core democratic base. Does this mean that Obama shouldn't be the democratic nominee if votes for him come from independents?

If Lieberman's anything, it's a bald-faced liar. Last night, he gushed praise all over Palin – a woman who's every belief runs counter to his own, from abortion, to gun ownership, to foreign policy. And to top it off, he lied about Obama, talking as if Obama has opposed funding troops in Iraq when in actuality, Obama has consistently voted to approve funding to them. The only time he voted against was because of inappropriate earmarks attached to the legislation in question.

Lieberman should be ashamed of himself.

Well, it's sad to see Joe Lieberman allowing himself to be used by the Republican party, and even sadder to watch him stand up there and lie about Obama's record.

How can an ex Democrat lead any Democratic anything? He gave it up! Call the kettle black! Lieberman is no Democrat. So why is he calling himself Independent. Why not confess to being Republican. It is what it is, Joe.

I hear you. Sadly this is our democratic leadership: Reid, Pelosi, & Mr. Empty Suit Obama.

Lieberman owes the Democrats ZERO. They dumped him; he ran as an Independent and WON. At the time I thought it was pretty amazing that he was good enough to run on the Dem ticket for VP, but not good enough to remain in the Senate.

My guess is he couldn't care less if they take away the chairmanship. It just makes them look bad. He's been honest and upfront in his views and his position.

And I don't agree with his position on Iraq.

The Dems shouldn't punish Lieberman for expressing his beliefs, opinions, or support for his close, personal friend John McCain. As a Democrat I believe the party has plenty of room for dissent and disagreement.

What ever happened to the "Freedom of Speech and Thought". Maybe the Democrates want blind followers anymore. They haven't had a decient platform in so many yrs so people can say they were proud to be a Dem. Then if they do get the top notch people runnung for an office they S- on them. Now maybe no one remembers that Joe had to basically leave the party and run as Independent. It is way past time for a through house cleaning at the DNC . And with their ratings at the lowest of any congress and senate they better check their hole cards. There could be a whole new turn over again just like a couple yrs. ago when they got back in control. Especially with that do nothing for the American power playing Pelosi running their show.
