ST. PAUL (CNN) – A senior adviser to John McCain’s campaign threatened a lawsuit against the National Enquirer Wednesday over “baseless attacks” in a cover story about Sarah Palin that included allegations of marital infidelity.

“The smearing of the Palin family must end,” said senior adviser Steve Schmidt. “The allegations contained on the cover of the National Enquirer insinuating that Governor Palin had an extramarital affair are categorically false. It is a vicious lie.

“Governor Palin is the most popular governor in the country. She is a proven leader, an accomplished executive, a champion for ethics reform, and a fighter against corruption. The efforts of the media and tabloids to destroy this fine and accomplished public servant are a disgrace. The American people will reject it.

He also said that “legal action will be considered with regard to this disgraceful smear.”

Over the past few days, the McCain campaign has issued increasingly aggressive responses to rumors about the presumptive Republican VP nominee, including some detailed public statements denying sensational stories that had not previously been reported by any mainstream media organizations.

Gosh! The little ole women on the Republican ticket , just can't take it. What was McCain thinking. , and to the National enquirer, werent they the ones who were following John edwards and publishing the "infedility" almost A YEAR, before, edwards admitted it. Hmmmmm..what DO they know now.
I question McCains wisdom in nominating a VP, where the american public is going "huh".

Demdog   September 3rd, 2008 7:06 pm ET

OMG, next they'll be rehashing John McCain's affair with a trashy socialite named Cindy, while his wife was recuperating from an automobile accident.

mel   September 3rd, 2008 7:06 pm ET

where's your sense of humor – mccain
can i sue you for the lies you and your repub friends have told me

btw – mccain said he never loved his country until he was a prisoner of war – you can love your country and not be proud of some of the things it has done – michelle should start telling everyone this

wyoming dem   September 3rd, 2008 7:05 pm ET

Ask John Edwards about how the "Enquirer" gets things wrong! They break a great deal of stories on the political front! Wait till it hits Entertainment Tonight, then it will be true.

Adrienne   September 3rd, 2008 7:05 pm ET

What else is their to do in Alaska? My husband grew up in Alaska until he was a young teen. There us a 2 to 1 ratio of men vs women in Alaska. If a girl is half way pretty she is getting bonked all the time. They have sex early. That is well known. Highest std's rate over there too.

sara   September 3rd, 2008 7:05 pm ET

The game is
Bristol is about 5 months pregnant
Bristol might have a miscarriage
I still believe she has 4 kids unless she proves the 5th. Show us the proof. She covers her lie with another lie. She tries to push it until the election. Just like Edwards!

Independentandlovingit   September 3rd, 2008 7:05 pm ET

Well,
If it's true, that really would me her and McCain are made for each other, since he and Cindy are ADULTERERS! They got together while he was married to his first wife! So much for Conservative Moral/Religious Values! And he has integrity...Please..! Help me and can't stop laughing at the hypocracy

Ken Pittsburgh   September 3rd, 2008 7:04 pm ET

when the national enquier wrote about John Edwards then they were a great newspaper now the shoe on the other foot and the Repubs do not like it stange very strange

I think McCain should have spent more time checking this person out rather jumping to the conclusion that she was a perfect running mate after on about 15 minutes conversation. The old maverick ain't what he used to be. And Sarah Palin ain't what she appears to be at first glance either.

This choice says a whole lot about how ready he IS to lead this country. Scarey.....

ZANE   September 3rd, 2008 7:04 pm ET

The "guilty" always theaten with a law suit...it's their only defense!
The National Enquirer probably has their story right.

Carol   September 3rd, 2008 7:04 pm ET

When the National Enquirer exposed John Edwards affair, the Republicans were all over it.

Now they're (National Enquirer) a disgrace?

pumped4Obama   September 3rd, 2008 7:03 pm ET

However, we are supposed to take pride in a woman who can shoot and fielddress a moose. ! LOL

I don't believe it!   September 3rd, 2008 7:03 pm ET

It must be true, because who really cares what the National Enquirer has to say! It must be true, and her husband didn't know. Well he knows now! Who ever this person is, he will be paid well to come out of the closet!

Dready1Rasta   September 3rd, 2008 7:02 pm ET

What goes around comes around....same old way.

tim   September 3rd, 2008 7:02 pm ET

I thought the Enquirer was the last bastion of good journalism? So said Faux News when they questioned why real journalists weren't following the NE's lead and going with the story about Edwards and his mistress. NOW it's a rag that spreads lies? Um, OK. Let me know when you change your mind again, repubs.

pumped4Obama   September 3rd, 2008 7:02 pm ET

I'm disgusted byond control over the parading of a 17 year old unwed pregnant teen, to include the Baby daddy on the campaign trail. Am I to understand that he is a H.S. dropout? And, they're supposed to get married? Give me a break. What an awful message to send to our kids. I teach school, and even my 8th graders think it's the wrong message to send. These students seem to have more sense and moral values than the Palins, McCain, Repugnants and the evangelicals who support this farse. Thank God for sensible children!

Tom in MD   September 3rd, 2008 7:02 pm ET

The whole "most popular governor in the country" thing is quite a stretch. She's has the highest popularity rating within her state–which should not be a surprise since she is relatively young and attractive, and is a Republican governor of a highly Republican state with a very small population. She's also very new, which means her citizens haven't had time to get sick of her and blame all their problems on her yet.

JohnS   September 3rd, 2008 7:02 pm ET

It is over.

America does not need this.

Looks like Sarah Palin breaks every of her preset values.
What a hypocrisy.

Guy   September 3rd, 2008 7:02 pm ET

“Governor Palin is the most popular governor in the country."

The only reason anyone even knows who she is is because McCain nominated her you idiot. Who's running the republican show over there?

To "Elle"   September 3rd, 2008 7:02 pm ET

You are kidding right? You think ANY democrat wants Palin off the ticket? Her being on the tickets practically guarantees a democratic victory. Democrats love this ticket.

Joe - Chicago, IL   September 3rd, 2008 7:02 pm ET

Isn't this the party that say sueing is out of hand, and that liberals whine too much? Maybe this is McCain's version of bipartisanship.

Republican Mephisto   September 3rd, 2008 7:02 pm ET

Jeez, getting a little jumpy about your Veep pick? Lowly little National Enquirer, the least reliable rag on the check out stand, has angered the mighty GOP? Tells you where they get their news from...

Andrew Dzeguze   September 3rd, 2008 7:02 pm ET

Is this the media the claim is out to destroy Palin? Because I haven't seen it from anyone else.

The same "paper," of course, has accused just about everybody in the world (and many mythical creatures) of sexual misconduct – including McCain and Obama. The fact that NE "broke" the Edwards story (ie got one story out of millions right – see blind squirrel finding nut), and the GOP spin cycle spent so long chastising the MSM for not following up on the NE's "reporting" on that issue must have some in Limbaugh/o'Reilly land terrified their base might believe it this time, too. I'm certainly not swayed by anything the Enquirer has to say – unless they find the Loch Ness monster in Vermont (again)!

Lisa   September 3rd, 2008 7:01 pm ET

With all the skeletons that have already come out of her closet, this one could be the next...wake up America, this lady is dangerous. Remember she could be just a heartbeat away!...OMG!

Viet Vet   September 3rd, 2008 7:01 pm ET

McCain's Gonna sue? I think it's Palin that would have to sue.
How come the father of Bristol's kid isn'tlocked up for statuatory rape?
Maybe they don't have that law in Alaska ,they have to propagate the population so Palin get get 47 votes next time she runs for City Council.
Palin's gonna talk about McCain? What she's known him for a week.

Maybe that's who she had an affair with

Adam   September 3rd, 2008 7:01 pm ET

She isn't the most popular Governor in the US, Schwartzenegger is. Until McCain announced her as the VP, nobody outside of Alaska had even heard of her.

Ex-Republican for Obama   September 3rd, 2008 7:01 pm ET

Elle September 3rd, 2008 6:45 pm ET

Oh no...not at all...Please leave her on the ticket...it's a dream come true for democrats.

I can't wait to see how the story about her marital affair turns out, or if it's true. Granted it's National Enquirer, but they are also the ones who broke some of the biggest news around (thats admittedly sad, which we can agree on).

derrick   September 3rd, 2008 7:01 pm ET

If i were McCain I will ask her to show me her pussssieeee so I can test it with my fingers and willie, just to make sure she has not slept with anyone apart from her husband.

logic is before he goes ahead with this, he measures the husbands willie....if her pussssieeee is any wider or deeper than her husband's willie....then I will vote for McCain as he is the greatest cheater cather ever

Phil-Little Rock   September 3rd, 2008 7:01 pm ET

Poor John McCain. You have to forgive him, he's having life problems. He can't seem to find one.

KC   September 3rd, 2008 7:00 pm ET

Sorry but the NE is junk stuff, it's sad that McCain even has to make a comment about it. It is spiraling out of control, I guess the "BOLD" move of the maverick just came back to slap him in the face. Again I will pick Judgement over so called experiance.

Adrienne   September 3rd, 2008 7:00 pm ET

I did not see them crying when they went after edwards.

dawn diva   September 3rd, 2008 7:00 pm ET

wow!!...we didnt see barack want to sue the new yorker....the repugs just laughed it off...when that guy from swiftboat wrote his book about barack saying he cant be president because all the lies about barack were true...repugs praised it....when repugs slamed michelle obama for being" unpatriotic" when she was only talking about the elction process and young people getting evovled... so u tell me now mcsame wants to sue ppl when they talk bad about his mistake of a vp.....the nerve....

Chris DD   September 3rd, 2008 7:00 pm ET

"Governor Palin is the most popular governor in the country."

LOL What the hell. Hardly anyone has even heard of her before.

I freakin love politics! Its better than Saturday Night Live or Mad TV Sometimes.

Farrell, Houston, Tx   September 3rd, 2008 7:00 pm ET

Maybe they got it wrong and meant to talk about the numerous affairs of John McCain.

Anonymous   September 3rd, 2008 7:00 pm ET

Ronald Reagen must be turning in his grave to think that in 2008 this is the best that the Republicans can come up with. I believe he would turn back to being a Democratic.

People people please for the good of this country stop this now and declare Obama/Biden our next POTUS/VP.

Bizu   September 3rd, 2008 6:59 pm ET

“ National Enquirer” broke so many information which happen to be true after..

CG   September 3rd, 2008 6:59 pm ET

That's what you get for not vetting properly and setting the table for your VP candidate. Now, your advisor's wish will come true-Sarah Palin WILL be vetted thoroughly by the American People-and the American Press, legitimate and otherwise. Fair or not, there it is. There is a price to be paid for being sloppy and reckless at this level of Politics JM, like it or not.

Katrina   September 3rd, 2008 6:59 pm ET

This hurts the Democratic cause - the GOP can push her as a martyr, and the real issues - extreme anti-abortion stance, corruption, irresponsible financial management, earmark Queen, etc. - go away. Who cares who she sleeps with? Clinton screwed half of D.C., if you believe some, and the country was still ten times better off than under presumably faithful Bush.

Karl Hampton   September 3rd, 2008 6:58 pm ET

Why doesn't McCain let the media interview Palin until she has been completely "madeover" by White House aides? Is it because she has so much to hide and they are experts at "hiding?"

Brian   September 3rd, 2008 6:58 pm ET

Is the National Enquirer scooping the MSM again? After the Edwards affair who knows.

Tom in MD   September 3rd, 2008 6:58 pm ET

Oh please, they're taking the Enquirer seriously? Are there any famous people who _haven't_ had BS printed about them in the Enquirer? Just because they accidentally got the Edwards thing right doesn't suddenly make them credible or worth paying any attention to.

But hey, while we're threatening lawsuits for slander, can I and other Obama voters sue McCain for accusing us of being mindless "kool-aid" drinkers and being "the MTV crowd"? I've never felt as personally insulted and derided by a political campaign as I have by McCain's.

All the Kings Horses and All the Kings Men Couldn't Put Fallen Little Miss Ice Chip Together Again!   September 3rd, 2008 6:58 pm ET

David R in Carlsbad   September 3rd, 2008 6:58 pm ET

Great throw of the dice McCain. Any idiot could have seen this coming once you saw the baggage she brought to the table.

Oh wait, they didn't check her out until after the chose her. How Bushlike!

James   September 3rd, 2008 6:57 pm ET

Add FREE SPEECH as another American Right that McCain and the GOP want "thrown under the Bus".

Republicans run and exclusive cult like club   September 3rd, 2008 6:57 pm ET

The National Enquirer were right about John Edwards. I'm willing to cut them some slack to see if they can prove their allegation.

Also, Sarah Palin was the Governor of a state with just over 600,000 people with 25,000 people on the taxpayer payroll. That's not a small Republican Reagan type government. That's not being a Maveric.

Dameun Strange   September 3rd, 2008 6:57 pm ET

Most popular governor in the country...um try Arnold of CalEEfornEEya. I mean McCain doesn't even know who she is...and its not because of a senior moment.

Carol   September 3rd, 2008 6:57 pm ET

Give it up PRESS. Go on out to a cemetary and look for DIRT.

Sarah has more experience and qualifications tobe Vice-President than any pick in recent history. If the Nominee were so insecure as to NEED someone ( just in case; or because they expected to be a – heart beat shy of doing th job) HE SHOULD NOT BE RUNNING. Sarah is going to HELP John McCain – not replace him. And in the event that a situation SHOULD OCCUR where she had to "STEP IN" for the President IFEEL SARAH PALIN WILL BE PREPARED AND WILL DO A TERRIFIC JOB.

pUT THAT IN YOUR PEACE PIPE AND SMOKE IT !

Obama Will Win   September 3rd, 2008 6:56 pm ET

Sarah Palin is ready to be the vice-president (of her local school board in Alaska). Bad choice Johnnie, weknow you are at a risky age to hold this office, and now you put her on the ticket. Wow. How rash.

sara   September 3rd, 2008 6:56 pm ET

Her conservative belief is an insult to all women who believes in equality and empowerment. She pulls the country behind! Just like she did with her family! She is an insult to our intelligence and our straggle. I am a supporter of Hillary Clinton. She is not HRC. She never will be. I actually lost all my respect for McCain for trying to manipulate us, woman by choosing picking her.

S. Shay   September 3rd, 2008 6:56 pm ET

Wow. The Republicans are coming out against a story before it even prints...they must be afraid. I wouldn't be surprised if she had an affair. American politicians spend their whole lives grooming themselves to possibly be President or VP but this woman if from Alaska. First of all, they don't even like folks from the states and secondly this woman was busy not paying attention to her kids, shooting and eating moose and attending AIP meetings while bailing her drunk husband out of jail. The LAST thing on her mind was becoming the VP of the U.S. so it wouldn't surprise me that among all of the other things she was doing in her regular life she found time to have an extramarital affair. It just makes sense.

S. T. Agnew   September 3rd, 2008 6:56 pm ET

Palin must stay on the ticket. She is currently unappreciated for the help she'll give the Democrats in the upcoming days leading to the election. Besides, where can you ever find entertainment like her. Of course she had an affair. I still await proof Twig is hers. Only on the basis of what she says that Bristol is 5 months along does the prove exist. On stage tonight doesn't this have a literary parallel? Help me out here. Doesn’t Nathanial Hawthorne’s Scarlet Letter come to mind? Take a back seat, Nate, because Sarah Palin’s unfolding story entwined with the RNC’s holier-than-thou MO is definitely better than fiction. In fact, if this story were a novel, it'd be thrown aside as too outrageous.

rich   September 3rd, 2008 6:56 pm ET

Since both candidates are worthless, I decided not to vote. Now with Palin as McCain's VP,,I will vote for McCain. If McCain takes Palin off the ticket,,,It's simple – I vote for Obama just for fun.

Erika, KS   September 3rd, 2008 6:55 pm ET

Sad that so many people can't handle strong women in powerful positions. I guess McCain should have learned something by the way the Obama camp treated Hillary.
Sad, sad, sad. I guess I'll have to tell my granddaughters that only men can aspire to be president, or vice president.

The truth appears that men would rather have a limited experienced President than a limited experienced vice president.
Sad.

Cindy from NC   September 3rd, 2008 6:55 pm ET

Well the National Enquirer broke the story and they haven't lost too many law suits these days. So go ahead and sue them so the real truth comes out. I think I might actually buy my 1st copy. Or Wait, maybe the editor might hang themselves like the Washington Madame... hint hint... Republicans keep their dirty secrets closey guarded....

oh wait, Obama's popularity didn't stop McCain's smear campaign, as I recall, they tried to turn Obama's popularity into a negative...

Max   September 3rd, 2008 6:54 pm ET

The truth is, the McCain camp is so conscious of their lame choice of VP. They are working hard to make it look good, therefore they can't afford any vile and ugly truth to be dug about her especially since they did not make a thourough investigation prior to selecting her..

FL Democrat   September 3rd, 2008 6:53 pm ET

I don't understand. Republicans are actually planning to smear Michelle Obama during their prime-time convention slot tonight, and yet they throw a hissy fit over an article about Palin in the Enquirer? What a bunch of sensitive, hypocritical, hateful slime-bags.

Obama for President   September 3rd, 2008 6:52 pm ET

Wait, I'm sorry....they're considering suing the NATIONAL ENQUIRER?? Does anybody really take the National Enquirer that seriously?

The Republicans will accuse ANY media of being biased. What's ridiculous – NBC and ABC both carried coverage of the Republican convention last night, but neither carried coverage of the DNC until Obama's acceptance speech.

PBDenver   September 3rd, 2008 6:52 pm ET

As a former democrat of 25 years and now a registered independent, I can proudly say that I am no longer a democrat and so proud of that fact. This country is becoming increasingly more divided day by day. We should end the 2 party system and become Americans once again. Maybe then, good quality people can run for office and actually get some work done!!!

Terry   September 3rd, 2008 6:51 pm ET

The Republicans cannot take it if you have not noticed they have been abusing there power just to shut any opposition to there platform.

Barbara L. Giles   September 3rd, 2008 6:50 pm ET

I am very disturbed about the fact that McCain did not have a discussion with Larry King because he was upset on Campbell trying to get some necessary facts that the public needs to know about Palin. He is like a spoiled brat. I hope that this attitude is not indicative of how he will run the country if he is elected. Vote Obama 08!

Simmons   September 3rd, 2008 6:50 pm ET

The republican party is supposed to be all about family values. Guiliani is speaking tonight, he had a mistress in the N.Y. state house while his wife and child resided there. Newt was interviewed last night and he was running on his wife while condemning President Clinton. Senator McCain confessed cheating on his first wife for eight years. Now, Mrs.Palin puts her daughter in the public arena when she knew she was pregnant. If these people were democrats, they would have been crucified and everyone knows it. I guess it depends on which party does the deed as to whether it is sin or not. As a Christian, the preacher that called for rain for the democratic convention, made me ashamed that he was supposedly is called a man of God.

Thomas Baird   September 3rd, 2008 6:50 pm ET

They say she is the most popular Governor in the country .How come I never heard of her until just recently and she wasnt even on the VP Short List. All of a sudden she is a the ideal choice and just what the republican party nedds a breath of fresh air. After 8 years of a failed republican President and VP and a failed republican party and administration of course they need a breath of fresh air .But even with Palin it would be still just more of the same Failure..

Michael   September 3rd, 2008 6:50 pm ET

They seemed ok with it when John Edwards was the target, and he wasn't even campaigning...

Rob   September 3rd, 2008 6:49 pm ET

The National Enquirer broke the story about the Edwards Affair too.
Everyone blew it off until after the vote. Then it turned out the Enquirer had the story exactly right. But do not worry Palin. Since you claim to be a Christian. Dr. Dobson and Focus on the Family will hail you as a Hero for staying married despite your adulterous affair.

Chuck   September 3rd, 2008 6:49 pm ET

I guess experience only counts if you are running for VP, not President. We will see who is laughing when either McCain wins, or Obama raises your taxes. Nothing like working for Uncle Sam....

rusty long   September 3rd, 2008 6:48 pm ET

I agree, smearing of ALL the candidates must end. The McCain campaign has been putting out ads that lie about Obama, that should end as well. Keep it simple, keep it true, keep it respectful. But, as disgusting as this tabloid crap is, there is a part of me that has to say that it appears that the chickens are coming home to roost . You are going to get what you give, it's as simple as that. What a way to elect a President. The world is probably very entertained by this.

JIM...TX   September 3rd, 2008 6:48 pm ET

"the most popular governor in the country" ???? WHAT COUNTRY?? I'd bet Bobby Jindal of Lousiana tops the beauty queen in most peoples mind....among others.....get real fool.

Democrat....no matter what!   September 3rd, 2008 6:48 pm ET

Whether it's true or not, it wouldn't be a surprise to anybody because the McCain campaign didn't vet her properly. I'm sure there's much more to come about her! After all, her husband was an alcholic....I'm sure there must be some marital problems!

Rick K   September 3rd, 2008 6:48 pm ET

Wasn't Schmidt the guy who was on the giving end of the McCain "black baby scandal" in 2004?

Bully's and liars can give but they do not like to take.

This kind of discourse certainly makes me want to chant, "USA, USA, USA!"

Republican for Obama   September 3rd, 2008 6:48 pm ET

McCain has proved he's not a hands-on leader and he's got terrible judgment. With a hands-off, poor judgment approach, I wonder which lobbyists will be running our economy? Phil Gram? Oh lord!

McCain must fire whoever vetted Palin. There seems to be a lot still out there on her, who knows when it'll explode.

Phil Newton from Murphy, Oregon   September 3rd, 2008 6:48 pm ET

A party of sue-ers.

It's the American way.

Observer   September 3rd, 2008 6:47 pm ET

Wow, the Republicans can sure dish it out, but they certainy can't take it. I guess it's OK for their operatives to Swiftboat Kerry and Obama, but when it comes to one of their own, it's all of a sudden outrageous and grossly unfair. Give me a break!!!
John McCain made a bad choice for VP and now he has to live with the fallout from it.

RJ, CA   September 3rd, 2008 6:47 pm ET

It just doesn't get any better from the Obama gutter people. THIS is his base - no thanks!

Kim   September 3rd, 2008 6:47 pm ET

Crazy how they are forced to "defend" her so quickly. The last week has been a circus. Now I do feel bad for Palin because I doubt she expected to be under such microscope and scrutiny like this. But it's a double-edge blade on both sides. Everyone has been getting hits from everywhere. Obama and his wife have been attacked numerous times as well.

Happens.

Maybe McCain should've vetted his running mate better.

Adam   September 3rd, 2008 6:47 pm ET

Now she's the most popular governor in the country???

Umm, until a few days ago, I don't think anybody even knew who she was.

student   September 3rd, 2008 6:45 pm ET

so let me get this straight...some 17 year old self proclaimed "redneck" knocks up the governor's daughter and, as a reward for his brilliant decision making and life skills, he gets to share the national spotlight with one of our countries most prominent politicians john mccain...the hypocrisy just never ends...

Elle   September 3rd, 2008 6:45 pm ET

Gee, the democrats who are calling for Palin's removal from the ticket must really be threatened by her. GOOD!

JD   September 3rd, 2008 6:45 pm ET

Did we realize that she was the most popular governor when McCain announced her as his VP and everybody went "huh?"

ralph   September 3rd, 2008 6:45 pm ET

Hey Kathleen! McCain can always borrow money from his rich wife or his lobbyist buddies.

gpk3   September 3rd, 2008 6:45 pm ET

I'm almost getting sick of this, but it's nothing compared to what the Repubs would have hit the Dems with if this was reversed. Carry on!

Frankie   September 3rd, 2008 6:45 pm ET

Hasty decisions? Judgment? Impulsivity? Temperament? Question character of opponent? Slam opponent's family? Tell half truths? Facade of change when voted over 90% with Bush? Now sexism? About candidate not issues? Cannot question new VP choice?

McCain's campaign

Smart_Lady   September 3rd, 2008 6:44 pm ET

What hypocrisy from the liberal left! They are the party that has always promoted women can do it all...be wives, mothers, and career women. And then when one appears on the scene that is a different party, the hypocrisy starts!! And the American people can see it. Obama-Biden will bring nothing new, just plain ole politics as usual. And you people are all deceived. The blind following the blind.

Democrats Rule   September 3rd, 2008 6:44 pm ET

This is just plain sad. I'm beginning to question whether Senator McCain has enough sense to continue in the Senate where there are 99 others to keep him out of the trees. This man can't run a campaign, let alone a country.

Christie   September 3rd, 2008 6:44 pm ET

Obama was called Muslim and a terrorist by republican author. Yet Obama did not cry like a baby. Wake up McCain . Americans are not stupid.

Jean   September 3rd, 2008 6:43 pm ET

This is what happens after the kind of vetting done by McCain. He said he was pleased with the results, so this is what he asked for. The American public deserves better.

ralph   September 3rd, 2008 6:43 pm ET

Oh Gee! McCain is upset over a magazine that has even less credibility than a comic book? talk about over reacting.

Independent   September 3rd, 2008 6:43 pm ET

Didn't John Edwards deny the enquirers allegations as well?

Chris   September 3rd, 2008 6:42 pm ET

Dude, McCain... I don't know about your campaign... but personally, I've always had the stance that whatever the National Enquirer is bullsh**. I'm not exactly sure why you fell the need to call the cover's content a "vicious lie"... I mean, we're talking about the magazine that thinks Elvis is still alive, and that Aliens land on earth for the first time in history... every other month! Now, I know you've been busy fending off legitimate criticism all week about Palin, your Vetting process, and your campaign's apparent desire to "not discuss the issues" so your trigger-finger might be a little itchy... And I understand your campaign would rather be parading around a pregnant teenager as a reason social conservatives should like your campaign, but relax a bit, eh?That, and you might want to ask someone a bit... younger... how factual this thing called the "Internet" is, and how little people pay attention to most of it's rumors when they aren't brought into the MSM with a vehement denial. Of course, you could always ask your opponent how he dealt with the ones created by your supporters; that reaction was a bit more controlled and palatable.

karen-phoenix   September 3rd, 2008 6:42 pm ET

Go back and check on what she did to that little town in Alaska. THe town of 6,000 was solvent until she became mayor. Now they are 20,000,000 in the hole after Palin decided to build a "sports complex" and the sewage treatment plant that needed help NEVER got a dime.
It also is the "Meth" capital of Alaska!!! McCain, what were you thinking???? This woman probably DID have affairs and so did her husband. After what I've heard about her in the last two, I would believe it in a heartbeat!!!!

William, from Cali!   September 3rd, 2008 6:42 pm ET

If they lied about her and slandered her good name....... and told "false un-truths" about her.............."then she should sue 'em"!.............This is America and we still have laws against that type of behavior...........

Republicans Hate America   September 3rd, 2008 6:41 pm ET

what about the smearing of the Obama family in the best selling book from the same losers that brought you the swift boat on John Kerry. Thats a book of lies maybe the Obama camp should sue them. Oh wait Obamas got better things to do like fix the mess you republicans made.

Is anybody looking at the Republican convention? Is it a true reflection of our country and the people in it? It is as white as can be. Nothing against white folks, God bless'em, but the republican party is as non-inclusive as you can get. I'd rather vote for someone who is going to think of everybody in the nation, not just a small few. And it is as BORING AS ALL GET-OUT!!!! I mean really!!! I enjoyed hearing about what McCain's life has been about, and he is an American hero. But he proved that he is as senile as they come when he picked that broad from Alaska! How crazy is he?! Really crazy y'all!!! I mean he could have found many republican women waaaaayy more qualified than that girl. Seriously.
I'm a republican who is going to vote for Obama. I think if people think about it- it their heart of hearts- they know that if McCain keeled over tomorrow, who in their right mind would want some lady that we don't even KNOW in charge of the country??!! And God forbid as well should somebody get to Obama- would you feel bad if Joe Biden became the President? No! I wouldn't have any problem at all. John McCain, you did the republican party a disservice when you put Palin on the ticket.
You really did.

Oh well. Go O-Biden!!!!!
Obama-Biden 08!

Cathy   September 3rd, 2008 6:41 pm ET

McCain where is your sense of humor now??? And don't you dare try to blame Obama's campaign for this too. It's the republicans who have played dirty politics time and time again!!!!

Vic   September 3rd, 2008 6:41 pm ET

When John McCain pick Sarah Palin as his VP and not the better qualify Elizabeth Dole; he looks to the nation and said: "My viagra intake is now over; phoenix is rising." This is some straight talk. lol

This is complete manufactured outrage.

The NATIONAL ENQUIRER? Who the heck pays attention to that?!?!

Well, besides bat-boy's mother cutting out clippings for the cave wall...

This is desperate by the McCain campaign. My vote has been with Obama from the very beginning, but I always really respected McCain. I voted for him in the primaries in 2000. But COME ON.

How the mighty have fallen.

Sarah Bell, Cleveland OH   September 3rd, 2008 6:39 pm ET

How dare the McCain campaign belittle the accomplishments of Senator Barack Obama. This is just a Republican scandal to destroy the first black presidential nominee. It's racist to question Obama's experience. And what flat out bigotry to raise questions about Obama's business dealings, political affiliations and his bipartisan record. Racist! Racist racist racist. (See how this works everyone?) You are witnessing the key piece of the Palin package. Use a woman to paint the entire media as sexist in the hopes that woman will be dumb enough not to see through this obvious pandering. Rallying your party base might have worked. Grabbing PUMA's ten members probably worked. But this will not work. Eat your own mooseburgers GOP. Cause I've had ENOUGH!! Anyone but McCain '08!

TomfromIowa, why would McCain remove her from the ticket? Conservatives, including myself, think she is fantastic. I have followed her story for several months now and think she is the best choice for the position. This woman is the real deal, not some media packaged product. - Messed up family
- Infidelity

All of this in a single week!!!

McCain-Palin is a TRAINWRECK. I'm making popcorn and enjoying the ride.

the more hysteria you see from the left- the more you know that they are absolutly terrified of a strong republican woman! this is so much fun watching them make complete fools of themselves and destroying the dems in the bargain. the media ,such as campbell brown etc., are finally showing their true liberal stripes and losing all credibility. when this election is over and mccain and palin are in the white house, these liberal "reporters" will be lucky to find out if the president is even in washington, much less get any interviews ha!

Imagine Karl Rove’s tag team partner Steve Schmidt, who just happens t be McCain’s senior advisor is reading the National Enquirer. Doesn’t he have better things to do?

Their new game plan is to cry sexism even when there isn’t any. WATCH CAREFULLY!!!

BE CAREFUL of the Karl Rove tactics. Remember who won in 2004 (Bush) even though we all regret that now!!!

Cynthia   September 3rd, 2008 6:33 pm ET

Hey, we all thought that the Enquirer was wrong about John Edwards and look what happened. Wouldn't it be real cute if it is found to be true – good judgement on McCain first big executive decision!

Adam Habib Dallas, TX   September 3rd, 2008 6:32 pm ET

Do not mess with national enquirer. If you do not believe me, ask John Edwards. They will not dare to say it about a VP candidate unless they know what they are doing.

Kitten for Obama   September 3rd, 2008 6:32 pm ET

Well John Edwards said the same thing, they were lies. I wonder about all of this, McCain did not properly vet her. Yes she was in a state that the people kept things covered, now you are on the national level everything goes. You wonder why so many people didn't want their names in the hat. Republicans and Deomocrats. This is going to be a bitter pill to swallow if it is true. THINK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

R. Squibbs   September 3rd, 2008 6:32 pm ET

Disgusting. But what do you expect from the National Inquirer?

Aside from that, does anyone else here think the McCain campaign is ultimately doing themselves more harm than good by inflating Palin's reputation and qualifications to such absurd levels? They're making her sound like FDR, Susan B. Anthony, Mr. Smith, and the Messiah all rolled into one. And she's actually just a former Mayor of a tiny town and a first-term governor of a state with a very small population, who (like many politicians) has already had a history of ethics problems and a penchant for earmarks. If they would just say that she's an up-and-coming public servant who's being treated unfairly by the media, rather than artificially inflating her resume, they'd look less foolish and help her out more. Just a thought.

So where is freedom of speech now GOP? The GOP must STOP their desire to anhialate our constitutional rights.

Wall Street Journal columnist and former Reagan speechwriter Peggy Noonan and former John McCain adviser, Time columnist, and MSNBC contributor Mike Murphy were caught on tape disparaging John McCain's selection of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his Vice Presidential running mate.

As an American, I know and respect Biden's experience and dedication to public service which has been uncompromised by travel, family, salary and position. He is a great American VP personality and matched by experience. On the other hand, Palin is anything but what I hoped the Republican Party VP choice to be. There are at least TEN women in politics and public service with leadership and experience equal to, if not better, than that of Biden. What was McCain thinking? This is a big decision and demonstration of competence and thoughtfulness which McCain blundered! This IS Another Bad judgment by McCain even before he is president.
I mean that the DNC and Obama are not having to defend their judgment and choice and are not having to "push their VP choice" down our collective throats-We all see that this is a bad call and BAD JUDGMENT from McCain.
As a woman, I know how hard it is to raise two kids and be available at 100% at my capacity at work. So how does the RNC expect us to "relate" when raising five children, soon to be six, since a teen pregnancy means grand ma raises the child; and a Down's Syndrome baby 4 months old means NO WAY can she be dependable! I want my VP of USA to be alert and available at 100% say Palin is scheduled to be in Middle East when her Down's syndrome baby has life-threatening health issue requiring ICU stay, I do not want my VP to have that dilemma!
Palin makes a good story for a teacher an administrator or even Alaskan Governor, BUT NO WAY VP OF USA.

Chris (UK)   September 3rd, 2008 6:29 pm ET
