Romney will speak at the RNC Wednesday night.

(CNN) — Former Massachusetts Sen. Mitt Romney appears to take a veiled shot at Michelle Obama, wife of Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama, in prepared remarks released ahead of his address to the Republican National Convention Wednesday night — comments the Obama campaign is calling a "pathetic GOP attack."

"Just like you, there has never been a day when I was not proud to be an American," Romney will tell Republican delegates according to advance excerpts released by the Republican National Committee.

The comments appear to be a not-so-subtle reference to Mrs. Obama's comment in February on the campaign trail when she declared, "For the first time in my adult lifetime, I'm really proud of my country." Those comments were immediately criticized by Republicans and Michelle Obama later said she misspoke.

Barack Obama's campaign fired back at Romney's expected remarks Wednesday night, calling them, “as pathetic as [Romney's] failed presidential campaign.”

“Barack Obama has said that families are ‘off-limits’, and we thought that John McCain agreed," Obama adviser Anita Dunn said in a statement. "But tonight, John McCain’s handpicked attack dog, Mitt Romney, exposed the fake outrage that the Republicans have been peddling all week as the blatant hypocrisy that it is."

"The McCain team’s disgusting attack on Barack Obama's wife shows they would rather generate false outrage to distract from their own problems than talk about the issues facing the American people," Dunn also said. "Mitt Romney’s attack on a candidate’s wife is as pathetic as his failed presidential campaign."

Romney, believed to have been on McCain's shortlist for vice president, is slated to address the Republican convention Wednesday night.

People think Romney is bright, but he reminds me of the cartoon
charcter Goofy. Is he proud of all the scandals in the Bush
Administration? Does the "legalization" of torture make him
proud of his country? I'll bet it does! Any religion that believes
in the Doctrine of Infallibility - which is what the Mormon Leaders
receive, has a "huge" blind spot. He is almost as out of touch as
McSame.

SamSunny   September 3rd, 2008 6:44 pm ET

Apparently John McCain is not as proud of you…..you were used and dumped for a trophy VP candidate. I guess John thought Sarah was prettier than you. Nice Mormon values, attacking an opponent's wife.

voter   September 3rd, 2008 6:44 pm ET

Bonnie,
you are right Michelle is a grown woman and so is Palin. Why can't we ask questions about Palin's qualifications without it being labeled sexist? According to you, she is a grown woman. If you don't want to play with the dogs, stay on the porch. By the way, the hypocricy of the republicans continue. We can talk about other people's families, but you can't talk about the republican party family.

Eric   September 3rd, 2008 6:44 pm ET

Another diluted Republican scumbag comment.

Cindy from NC   September 3rd, 2008 6:44 pm ET

Give me a break. They have nothing better to do but smear people's family, while they want sympathy for all the mistakes they have made:

Cheating spouses BIG PROBLEM
Pregnant Teens (ok for suburban girls but down right dirty for urban girls)
Dirty Politics - Kill Clinton for a "Private Matter" b/n him and his wife but Bush lied to the American people and caused thousands of lives to be lost
Abuse of Power - Cheny, Palin, Bush, 1/2 the Alaskan government.

AND FOLKS have a problem w/ Obama
Stand up Guy for all, even you nasty repubs.
Wants America to be great for your kids, his kids and all else.
RESPECTS HIS WIFE…. That's all I need to say.

RepubliCONS

Angelique   September 3rd, 2008 6:44 pm ET

Oh good grief! Sarah Palin's record, stated views, past views and not to mention a very current ethics violation investion…this woman has problems you can drive a Mack truck through. If the best the Rove style mud slingers can come up with is a poorly worded statement made by Michelle Obama - who isn't running for anything - well, it just hammer's home the point that four years of McCain would be no different than the last eight with Bush.

Obama needs to shut up. If he doesn't want Michelle to be the target of GOP attacks, then he and his hypocrite of a campaign staff need to stop talking about Cindy McCain's finances or houses. The rules never apply to Obama and his Hilter like tactics. McCain is the best choice for America. If OBAMA IS DISHING IT, THEN HE NEEDS TO TAKE IT. IF OBAMA CAN'T TAKE A BLOODY NOSE ONCE IN AWHILE, THEN PERHAPS HE SHOULD GO HOME AND CRAWL UNDER HIS BED!!

HOW DARE YOU ATTACK THAT INTELLIGENT YOUNG WOMAN.
HAVE YOU AND THE GRAND OLD PARTY SUNK SO LOW TO TRY AND GET A VOTE OR TWO?? I HAVE BEEN A REGISTERED AND VOTING REBUPLICAN FOR THE LAST 25 YEARS. BUT I'VE SEEN ENOUGH OF MCCAIN"S BAD JUDGMENT AND THE REST OF YOU GRASPING AT STRAWS. GOOD BYE,

Obama said it right….McSame and his puppets just don't get it. They are clearly out of touch with the rest of America. That's why Romney was out of the race before it even started because he too doesn't get it. We'll just sit back and watch the Electoral Map turn BLUE!!!!

"If the liberal media can go after Sarah Palin's family, then Mitt Romney can make a subtle comment about Michelle Obama. Mrs. Obama called America "a downright mean country" and said she was never proud of her country until her husband won some primaries. I think she's opened herself up to this. If she can't take it, then she should stay out of the fray."

When did Sen. Obama go after Sarah Palin's Family? If you want to talk about her that fine, because you will have to give in account of that your self, but tell the true. Obama can not control the liberal media just as you can not control them.

Elise, CA   September 3rd, 2008 6:43 pm ET

They can attack Michelle Obama all they want.

Still doesn't explain why the republicans chose a Secessionist to the party ticket! You can't get any more anti- US government than that. Would she have sold Alaskan oil to the Russians, instead of the US, if she thought that's where the money was?

Do the hard core publicans have ANY idea how freaked out moderate female republicans like myself are right now? We've got some wack job who claims to have the gift of prophecy and a direct line to God, who told her to build a Great Pipeline. Probably told her to shoot animals two-by-two from that helicopter too.

Who cares about the kid - that's just something that can happen to anyone. Who cares about some ancient DUI charge, that wasn't her problem. Who even really cares about her throwing a hissy fit and trying to fire people at this point.

I've got this tinfoil hat wearing gunslinging fruitbat trying to find a way to enforce her *bizarre* religious beliefs on me. No, stay away from my body and the Constitution. Stay away *period*.

Unless McCain can come up with footage of Obama dressed as a black panther and tossing Molotovs at the local po-leese, there is NO way in hell I'm voting Republican this time. I'll vote Democrat.

Jeez Louise. Just when I thought this election couldn't get any weirder.

abe   September 3rd, 2008 6:41 pm ET

Mitt must have beem mighty proud to be an American when he spent all those years in France during the Vietnam War!

Karen   September 3rd, 2008 6:41 pm ET

Palin's husband is as unpatriotic as you can get! He is part of a group that actually supported seceding from our country. If he truly loved America, he would never be a part of a group that would consider abandoning it.. How can we elect a ticket that includes this radical anti-american?! I love the USA and do not want to see anyone as disrepectful of our nation as Todd Palin in the White House. How could McCain do this to us?

Anne E.   September 3rd, 2008 6:41 pm ET

If this man was REALLY proud to be an American, he'd encourage his sons to enlist in the military.
Wonder how he'll feel if a "President McCain" reinstates the draft……
never mind, he'll just use his religion.

Barbara L. Giles   September 3rd, 2008 6:41 pm ET

I think that Romney needs to look at Palin's husband, who wanted to secede from the US. If you want to attack spouses, be fair.

ton   September 3rd, 2008 6:41 pm ET

What is pathetic is that democrats are exactly like republicans in their attacks but pretend not to be. If Michelle Obama said something so stupid I don't find it to be a big deal to repeat it. It is not a personal attack against her. For example they could ask why Michelle Obama was out making that comment rather than at home taking care of her girls like the media has been doing to Palin- that would be personal. Obama and his campaign can pretend to be above the fray because he has all the media outlets doing his attacks for him. He has had the past 18 mos to see them all kiss his butt so he plays Mr. Nice Guy when he is no different than any other politician. I am not a republican or a democrat but I really find it so pathetic how the democrats play victim all the time to the horrible republican attack machine. They are all the same.

Common Sense   September 3rd, 2008 6:41 pm ET

It amazes me that Barack Obama took the high road on families and now you have the Republican smear machine on behalf of John McCain taking shots at Michelle Obama and rekindling something that she said 7 months ago, which people took out of context, and now this is ok? I was a Republican and yes, I voted for George Bush twice, but as a committed independent, I am now for Obama because at least the Democrats have tangible plans to resolve this countries problems.

POed   September 3rd, 2008 6:40 pm ET

What a surprise. Democrats being complete whiny hypocrites. So let me get this straight, it was ok for the Democrats and the liberal media like CNN and MSNBC to wage a personal smear campaign on VICE PRESIDENTIAL nominee Palin but when the GOP does it back to PRESIDENTIAL nominee Obama, it is "disgusting" and "pathetic". You guys are pathetic. Grow up.

Camus   September 3rd, 2008 6:40 pm ET

Don't be naive, family is never off-limit in politics. Open your eyes and see how the mainstream media is taking on the Palin family, including a 17-year girl. On the other hand, Michelle's remark is an insult to all we proud americans. That is the REAL issue!

This is my 5th pro-McCain post here. The first 4 were all "moderated". If you can read this, you're lucky.

If Romney or any other GOP mentions Barack's or Biden's family, the people of the United States will put more info on these blogs that have yet to be put out. These are all personal issues that we have received from Alaska for Palin and her family. BTW, how old was the fiance when the daughter was pregnant? Isn't that a crime in some states? Bring it on Romnobody. We are stronger than the hair gel on your head.

MJ Spoon   September 3rd, 2008 6:39 pm ET

I'm amazed at all the untruths the Reps are tossing out at their convention. As long as Mitt Romney brings it up I would love to see Cindy McCain's comment that she did not mean anything re Michele Obama when she went on national tv & snidely said that she Cindy McCain has always loved her country. It was obvious that Cindy McCain & John McCain rushed out to get on tv with that little comment. . That's ok but later when asked by the media Cindy McCain said her remark had nothing to do with Michele Obama's comment. That was a blatant untruth by Cindy McCain. The deliberate untruths bother me.

Thomas Baird   September 3rd, 2008 6:39 pm ET

Romney your the one who decided to step aside and let McCain become the republican nominee. If you would of stayed with it you might of won it and then you could of picked Palin or McCain as your running mate. Palin looks better and probably is better company. But can she give a good speech.

victoria gray   September 3rd, 2008 6:38 pm ET

Sorry, Mitt, I love my country, but I was not proud of it, when we

- jailed Martin Luther King, Jr.

- bashed John Lewis' head in on a Selma Bridge

- murdered Medgar Evers

- launched an unprovoked war of agression on Iraq

- tortured prisoners in Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo.

Get the drift?

Thank God, there have been many more moments when I was immensely proud of America. I'll be glad to forward that list too. It's long.

How dare the McCain campaign belittle the accomplishments of Senator Barack Obama. This is just a Republican scandal to destroy the first black presidential nominee. It's racist to question Obama's experience. And what flat out bigotry to raise questions about Obama's business dealings, political affiliations and his bipartisan record. Racist! Racist racist racist. (See how this works everyone?) You are witnessing the key piece of the Palin package. Use a woman to paint the entire media as sexist in the hopes that woman will be dumb enough not to see through this obvious pandering. Rallying your party base might have worked. Michele Brice   September 3rd, 2008 6:36 pm ET

Sure, on the surface Barack Obama appeared to sympathize with Sarah Palin and her daughter being dragged through the liberal media mud by stating families and children were off-limits. Yet, like everything else involving controversial, sensational comments (ie Reverend Wright), Obama stops short of disavowing the source. I would have found his "off limits" comment much more sincere had he punctuated his messaege by denouncing the Daily Kos.

What does that have to do with Barack Obama's wife?

Francisco Vega   September 3rd, 2008 6:36 pm ET

Palin is proud of her daugher and the daughter's boyfriend. She is going to announce it tonight. I cannot believe that she is proud of the neglect she had on her children for playing politics. What can we expect for the rest of Americans?

kc   September 3rd, 2008 6:36 pm ET

As an American, I know and respect Biden's experience and dedication to public service which has been uncompromised by travel, family, salary and position. He is a great American VP personality and matched by experience. On the other hand, Palin is anything but what I hoped the Republican Party VP choice to be. There are at least TEN women in politics and public service with leadership and experience equal to, if not better, than that of Biden. What was McCain thinking? This is a big decision and demonstration of competence and thoughtfulness which McCain blundered! This IS Another Bad judgment by McCain even before he is president.
I mean that the DNC and Obama are not having to defend their judgment and choice and are not having to "push their VP choice" down our collective throats-We all see that this is a bad call and BAD JUDGMENT from McCain.
As a woman, I know how hard it is to raise two kids and be available at 100% at my capacity at work. So how does the RNC expect us to "relate" when raising five children, soon to be six, since a teen pregnancy means grand ma raises the child; and a Down's Syndrome baby 4 months old means NO WAY can she be dependable! I want my VP of USA to be alert and available at 100% say Palin is scheduled to be in Middle East when her Down's syndrome baby has life-threatening health issue requiring ICU stay, I do not want my VP to have that dilemma!
Palin makes a good story for a teacher an administrator or even Alaskan Governor, BUT NO WAY VP OF USA.

Couldn't win the presidential nominee, past over for vice presidential nominee, need I say more! Still kissing up; guess he is looking for a cabinet position. Guess what? He won't get that either.

How disappointing…
I really thought that Romney was above all this "smear and Fear" crap that most GOP's spread around…

That is the only way that a GOP will win… is IF enough scared people out there would rather stick with the crap… litterally CRAP! that has been around lately instead of setting aside their fear of change and realizing that Obama is grear and will create GOOD CHANGE for all of us.

STOP living like and ostrich with your heads in the sand and look up to a bright future with Obama!

You mean patriotically-challenged Michelle Obama? This should be interesting. Go for it.

Chip Pudims   September 3rd, 2008 6:35 pm ET

Obama's campaign is panicing so much they can't keep track of their attacks. It's simple for Obama to say families are off limits and then have all his surrogates attach Palin's family, particularly in the Obama media. This should be about the issues, not 17 year old daughters and 22 year old drunk driving tickets. If Obama really believed this he would have accepted McCain's offer to tour the US in a series of town hall meetings discussing the issues so vital to this country, such as gas prices, national security, etc., but all Obama's campaign does is attack families and compare McCain to George Bush. Great fodder but as usual no substance!

Jane T, Williamsburg, VA   September 3rd, 2008 6:35 pm ET

Perfect and to the point, Mitt. Michelle Obama is not worthy to be First Lady and her husband, the orator and do nothing Senator except promoting himself Senator from IL, is not worthy to be the President.

Of course we're not proud of America   September 3rd, 2008 6:34 pm ET

Michele just said what we're all thinking.

OF COURSE WE ARE NOT PROUD OF AMERICA. Unjust wars, taxing the poor while giving money to the rich, no healthcare, no jobs!

That's why we Democrats hate America as it is today … we've hated it for 8 years, we hated it when Reagan was in office … and Bush senior.

We want to change it so that the world will love it.

But for now most of us hate it! And if you don't agree … vote McCain!

Obama all the way!   September 3rd, 2008 6:34 pm ET

Republicans are hypocrites, and I mean hypocrites with a capital H! First, they say they want the media to respect the privacy of of Palin's daughter, and what do they do? They parade her and her now "fiance" in front of the media! They say families are off-limits, and two of Palin's children are on Megan McCain's YouTube. They accuse Obama of being a rock star, and now they call Sarah Palin a rock star! They talk of Obama's lack of experience and pick someone for VP who has minimal experience, and no foreign relations experience. I could go on and on! Please, American voters, don't br fooled; this is a crock. Our allies and enemies are all rolling in laughter!

Shame on YOU Mitt Romney….
I even voted for you in the AZ primary, but now I'm happy you didn't get it, and McCain did!

As a registered Republican, I am now supporting Barack Obama, and doing all I know to get the Obama Family into the White House!

How can you even judge what a black woman in America has gone through growing up in the USA, when it wasn't even until the 1970's that your Mormon church allowed blacks to be "worthy" of serving in the ministry!

BrandonR   September 3rd, 2008 6:34 pm ET

There's a difference between attacking a VP candidates pregnant daughter and attacking attacking a presidential candidates wife, especially one like Michelle Obama. Bristol Palin is just trying to live her life while her mother is running for VP, but Michelle Obama is actually out there campaigning and talking about policy issues in speeches, interviews, etc. Once you start to get political as Mrs. Obama has by campaigning and talking about policy, then you are fair game for criticism.

William, from Cali!   September 3rd, 2008 6:34 pm ET

Romney needs to play back or get her words straight, of exactly what she said ; and more importantly why she felt that she had to say them, at that time. "Different life experiences leads to different outlooks, on that same life cycle of events,"no two persons see each issue the same. We are all Americans, and we all love the country we're in; if we didn't we would probably moved some where by now, don't you think? A lot about nothing from the Republicans, deal with the facts; and only the facts…………..

N/A   September 3rd, 2008 6:34 pm ET

To even entertain the possibility that Obama is in no way connected to the effort to trash Palin is naive at best. Though he may have plausible deny ability, he's far from innocent on this matter. This effort has showcased his hippocratic views. In the end… it will give the GOP the necessary fuel to win in Nov.

Peter from Lansing MI   September 3rd, 2008 6:34 pm ET

Ex-Republican for Obama   September 3rd, 2008 6:33 pm ET

The latest news is that Palin had an extra-marital affair on top of all the rest of the stuff she did.

Romney is going to attack Michelle? What a guy he is…oh yea, family and children were supposed to be off limits? Hypocracy anyone?

Paris   September 3rd, 2008 6:33 pm ET

Michelle Obama is not off limit. She campaigned for her husband for 18 months.

When you campaign and you make speeches then you need to watch what you say.

And if your true feeling is that America is mean and you never been proud of America then you don’t need to be the first lady of this nation.

Well, lets see, the DNC held 3 days talking about economy, war, and comparing McCain to bush

First day RNC wants to take jabs at Michelle obama

Oh well, gloves off, guess we can chat about McCains first abandoned wife, for young hot rich cindy, then his VP pick, young beauty queen Palin preaching abstinence only next to her knocked up teenager

Wanna start down the path about family issues mccain? you know your rosy little family resembles something from Jerry Springer.

Mitt Romney wants to destroy McCain as he was not named VP.

Alexis   September 3rd, 2008 6:33 pm ET

I don't understand why all these former candidates think they can say anything wrong about Obama…. Cause for an inexperience candidate like they say Obama is, he ran a pretty successfull campaign. His first time running for president he got the nomination of his party, unlike Guiliani, Thomson, Romney and the rest of the gang they fail big time very early on.. When it comes down to McCain how many time did he ran for President before he got his party nomination two three times I lost count, and the only reason McCain got his party nomination is because he was the most decent one among all of them fouls.

Diana   September 3rd, 2008 6:33 pm ET

Breck where have you been….the democrats have been on Palin's family ever since the was nominated for VP HELLO

Joyce - Chicago   September 3rd, 2008 6:33 pm ET

Mitt Romney is a sore loser. He will do anything and say anything just to get attention. He made ugly remarks during the primary and he still continues. But that's expected.

kendall   September 3rd, 2008 6:33 pm ET

Comming from a guy who grew up with a platinum spoon in his mouth, and who make 250 mil a year.

he has no reason to ever feel disappointment with this country; Well beside the fact that McCain skipped over him because he was mormon,

Romney hates the fact that a 2 year governor of a town with population 5,000 beat him because of his religion, But who cares he's rich

Alex   September 3rd, 2008 6:32 pm ET

If Michelle did in fact say that, then what is so wrong for Mitt to repeat it?

Pat   September 3rd, 2008 6:32 pm ET

The Obama campaign is full of hypocrisy and idiocy. To try and parallel an "attack" on a candidates wife who is front and center in this campaign with the unbelievalbe media bias and wall to wall coverage of a 17 year old daughter is nothing close to similar.

I don't here any Republican, Media Type, Blogger ect. attacking Obama's kids… Romney is using a quote from Michelle Obama's mouth. How is that not fair game??? The bias in this campaign is unbelievable, just look at the US Weekly cover today and compare it to Obama's cover two months ago… 2008 is the year that journalism died in this country.

Francisco Vega   September 3rd, 2008 6:32 pm ET

I was once lobbied to join Romney's LDS church. However, when I read the Book of Mormon, I decided to drop any intention. The book says that God darken the color of the skin of the descendants of one of the children of Lehi becuase he desobeyed him. African american were not accepted in the LDS church until recently, but cannot be bishops. Why do we get surprise of the attack of Romney on a color woman?

Crazy Cat Lady   September 3rd, 2008 6:32 pm ET

Typical, typical, typical hypocrisy: "Do as I say, not as I do." You're counting on Obama to be a gentleman and a man of his word, who'll refrain from attacking the families no matter how vilely the Republicans behave, while you, Mitt, with no twinge of guilt wallow in the mud of the low road.

Jay   September 3rd, 2008 6:32 pm ET

Let me get this straight. No mention of a name. No mention of or comparing to somebody who said they weren't proud…

Basically what you are all saying is that ALL statements that a person has always been proud of their country and being an American is a personal attack and thrashing of Michelle Obama?

Nobody is allowed in America to say they have been proud to be an American their whole life? Doing so makes you a greasy, low-life human being?

So what does saying you weren't always proud to be an American make you?

returntocommonsense   September 3rd, 2008 6:32 pm ET

And these are the people complaining about the press being "out to destroy" Sarah Palin. Karma has a nasty way of coming back and slapping you in the face.

NotFallingInLine.org   September 3rd, 2008 6:32 pm ET

A former Governor saying that "there has never been a day when I was not proud to be an American" is seen as an attack now?

The Obama campaign and all of Obama's fans are a little too touchy about Michelle Obama's anti-Americanism.

Besides, Hillary Clinton last week said the following at the Democratic National Convention: "A proud mother. A proud Democrat. A proud American. And a proud supporter of Barack Obama."

If what Romney is going to say tonight is an attack against Michelle Obama, than isn't what Hillary Clinton said last week an attack against Michelle Obama, too?

Vic   September 3rd, 2008 6:32 pm ET

Let's see which candidate has the better judgement. When Obama was asked what criteria does he has in picking a VP; he said that he wants someone who can be president, that also deeply cares for the American people, and have the dignity to also oppose him in the blind spots that he has when making tough decisions. That sounds like a strong leader. But, when McCain was asked what criteria does he has for his VP pick? He made his criteria for his VP choice obvious to the nation and the world that a grandmother who is still breast-feeding is what we need in a VP. His new campaign slogan is now; "Got Milk?"

Is this attack on Michelle Obama not sexist then?

Republican for Obama   September 3rd, 2008 6:31 pm ET

Romney should leave Michelle alone. He should be telling what Cindy McCain failed to reveal to America. Her life story -in a formal speech- the way Michelle did.

Is anyone having this feeling something (in McCain's camp) is being hidden under the guise of these offensive attacks?

Republicans Hate America   September 3rd, 2008 6:31 pm ET

Way to go Anita for saying what Romney is. A pathetic loser mouth piece for the hypocrites that are republicans.

Cynthia   September 3rd, 2008 6:31 pm ET

What Romney should be doing is taking a swipe at Senator McCain not picking him as his VP choice - he would have been a better pick.

McCain has been saying that the media is doing a hack job on Palin so why is he not putting the people who are a part of his campaign in check?

Wow, what role models, Sarah Palin, Cindy McCain, John McCain and now Romney.

thomas   September 3rd, 2008 6:30 pm ET

I've always been proud to be an american too, but I'm not proud of her legacy of slavery and oppression of women. Nor am iI proud of the genocide against the American Indians. Nor am I proud of the oppression against the poor. Nor am I proud of: War in Iraq, War in Afghanistan, 30,000+ Americans killed or maimed, Weakened U.S. military , Economy collapsed into Recession, A $9 trillion debt, Trillions of dollars borrowed from foreign investors, Record home foreclosures, 37 million people living in poverty, 45 million people without health insurance, Rampant illegal immigration, Record gasoline and energy prices , Record business and property sales to foreign interests, Relocation of factories overseas and outsourced jobs , Tax breaks for corporations and wealthy individuals, Half a trillion dollars spent on a failed drug war, World's largest prison population at 2.5 million (25% of world total), Deterioating U.S. infrastructure.
You get the idea.

Tom   September 3rd, 2008 6:30 pm ET

"Just like you, there has never been a day when I was not proud to be an American"

Who gives any credence to this crap? There have been plenty of days in the past eight years when I haven't been proud to be an American.

Linda31   September 3rd, 2008 6:30 pm ET

This just highlights the difference between the two parties. We have a candidate, Obama, saying leave the families alone and another candidate , McCain, that laughs and allows his party to tear people down.

Warms my heart.

don   September 3rd, 2008 6:30 pm ET

Enought of the GOP and its low life games. Take the gloves off Obama. There are tons of vetern groups out there that do not see McSame as a hero, time to hear both sides of the story and not just his pretty tale. Time to hear about his drug stealing wife, time to hear both sides, time to hear about Arizona crime family connections. Please take the gloves off. He wants to play dirty, time to show the GOP a new game.

Issues, Issues, Issues. That's all we want to hear.

ENOUGH!!! MITT!!!!! MCCAIN!!!!! ENOUGH!!

How sad and pathetic   September 3rd, 2008 6:29 pm ET

Same stale attacks and politics. This is quite sad, especially given that Obama explicitly shamed his supporters for attacking Palin's family the other day. I would hope that McCain would have enough decency NOT to support this kind of negative attack during HIS convention. Lot's of attacks can be made on his family and background….trust me.

Let's talk about the issues..Oh, I forgot….Rick Davis (McCain campaign manager) already said, "This election is not about issues," but rather about "personalities." Pathetic!

Ex-Republicans for Obama   September 3rd, 2008 6:29 pm ET

Then Palin's husband's membership is a seperatist organization is now on the table. Also John McCain's statement in his own words that he did not love this country until his freedom was taken away. So it's okay to attack Michelle in this way as long as you include the Palin's and the McCain's.

Nee   September 3rd, 2008 6:29 pm ET

Oh this is wide open now. Once the Democrats decided it was OK to attack a 17-year-old girl, it's war! Now McCain can talk about Obama's cocaine use and tabloid rumors about him, etc etc and NO ONE will blame him.

Elkie   September 3rd, 2008 6:29 pm ET

This is truly disguisting and shows the lack of integrity and character of the McCain campaign. The RNC is just upset they can't carry the mantel of the family values, since it's the Democrats who have the true family values candidate not an adulterer. As for Mitt, get a grip and realize you are a hack and this is exactly why you did not get the nomination and will not get another office in this country again. BTW where is the policies the Republicans are going to put forth. Where is it?

Sour Grapes   September 3rd, 2008 6:28 pm ET

pathetic loser

Rebecca   September 3rd, 2008 6:27 pm ET

If the GOP ever wanted undecided and independent voters to seriously believe that John McCain represented a new kind of politics…..his obvious pandering to the extreme right (by choosing Gov Palin) and Gov Romney's attempt to expound on this old story (as evidence that Michelle Obama is not patriotic) is just evidence that this years Rep ticket represents more of the same.

KATHLEEN   September 3rd, 2008 6:27 pm ET

I BELIEVE THAT OBAMA DOES NOT want to have Gender in this
debate. We Americans have heard enough about Gender and Race
during the Democratic Debate.

I can only hope that Obama will not fall into the trap of running his
campaign the same way.

Do not attack the families of the candidates. Obama does not want
to go there.

Mitt Romney is not well respected or well liked in our Country; except
for the rich people who admire him. I, personally, don't care if I ever,
ever see his face or McCain's or Bush, Cheney, Hannity, Ugly Limbaugh, Karl Rove, Ann Coulter's faces ever again!!!!1

Oh Come On!   September 3rd, 2008 6:27 pm ET

How can anyone still support these Republicans! They are just a bunch hypocritical fear mongering rich old white guys who are so afraid of losing their power they will bow to anyone with a large bank account or blind faith followers who can be manipulated.

I'm 28 and if elect Barack Obama this will be the first time in my adult life I will be proud to be an American. Realizing this country has gone down the toilet and we need to change it is a hell of a lot more patriotic than pandering to the rich and big business while the world laughs at our idiocy.

Our founding fathers did not sit back and pretend everything was alright under British rule, they wanted to create a country better than any country on the planet. We are failing them. We need new direction, we need fresh leadership, we need an intelligent educated leader, we need Barack Obama.

Michelle Obama is an American and a patriot and Romney should know better, especially if he plans to run against President Barack Obama in 2012.

Why is the Obama campaign going bezerk over Romney's statement? Are we not allowed to say we're proud to be Americans? By the way, Michelle said she was proud of her country for the first time and said nothing about being a proud American. Sounds like the Obama campaign is feeling guilty. Also, Michelle brought herself into the campaign when she started to campaign for her husband. She's fair game now.

Romney's just positioning himself for the upcoming 'withdrawal' of Palin by proving oce again that he will say whatever is expedient at the moment.

Boooo! How disgusting! What does Mitt Romney know about being black in America? I think Romney needs a lesson in history! A time existed in the United States when the black community could not even enter a white school. We have as a nation come a long ways in treating people with respect, regardless of color. I am white but I am also very proud of my country for the fact we have an African-American as the Democtratic Nominee for President. The Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. would be very proud of America!

How I wished Cindy McCain (the beauty queen) had given as powerful a speech as Michelle Obama did. As a matter of fact, I would like to see Romney's (who called Obama, 'Senator killer) wife speak good English!!

MITT ROMNEY ?
WHY DOES HE CONCENTRATE HIS LECTURE TALKING ABOUT CHRISTIAN AND FAMILY VALUES ?
HOW DARE THIS LOOSER WILL STAND AND TALK ABOUT MICHELLE OR ANY WINNING PERSON ?
ALL THE NICE THINGS WE HEARD ABOUT THIS IDIOT WERE INDEED PURE B.S.
JUST DISAPPEAR AND GO HOME.

What happened to you Romney? You've totally sold your soul to the republican base the last year and a half. And this is coming from a Mormon.

Noonan, Murphy trash Palin on hot mic: 'It's over'

After a segment with NBC's Chuck Todd ended today, Republican consultant Mike Murphy and Wall Street Journal columnist Peggy Noonan were caught on a live mic ridiculing the choice of Sarah Palin.

"It's over," said Noonan, and then responded to a question of whether Palin is the most qualified Republican woman McCain could have chosen.

"The most qualified? No. I think they went for this — excuse me — political bullsh** about narratives," she said. "Every time Republicans do that … because that's not where they live and it's not what they're good at and they blow it."

Murphy chimed in:

"The greatness of McCain is no cynicism, and this is cynical."
