From

ST. PAUL (CNN) - The question most viewers probably have on the next speaker, Rudy Giuliani, is How many times will he mention 9/11 in his speech tonight?

You know, there’s a phrase for what’s happening in this Republican convention: waving the bloody shirt. For decades after the Civil War, Republicans would win by “waving the bloody shirt” – calling on voters to remember the Union cause for which we sacrificed, and so many died.

After a few decades, it didn’t work anymore

We may be at that point now for the conservative bloody shirt.

The GOP needs to raise the excitement level among the party’s base. The problem is, it’s hard to rally the base without other people noticing. This is “us versus them” politics, portraying Democrats and liberals as somehow alien.

I bet Giuliani is kicking himself. Nobody told him that if he got in one of his drag outfits he could have been VP pick. :-(

David   September 3rd, 2008 10:20 pm ET

Without a bloody shirt, all they have left to wave is the flag and a bible.

Obama=reality, McCain=la la land   September 3rd, 2008 10:19 pm ET

I'm watching Rudy wrap up his speech and I have to say this convention is a joke!! "Drill baby drill" ? More like "Snore, baby, Snore". That GOP startegist caught trashing the Palin pick on hidden mike said it best: "it's over " for the Republicans :)

Who would the Democrats offend by using the term "Islamic Terrorist Attack"? How about the millions of Muslims who aren't terrorists.

Did we call Timothy McVeigh and the Unabomber "White American Terrorists?

No...they were simply terrorists.

I expected so much more from Giuliani.

Tim, Seattle   September 3rd, 2008 10:19 pm ET

3 days of a convention and the blue collar voters still havent heard about what the Republicans are going to do for this country. No policy, no platform.
Ghouliani's speech was definate red meat....but I have to tell ya', its still drill baby dril, the surge, POW camps and 9/11 re-treads.

What are you going to do to increase employment? What are you going to do about healthcare? WHat are you going to do about short term gas prices?

Great rhetoric, no solutions

Enough!

Christina   September 3rd, 2008 10:19 pm ET

The Republicans- we're the party of change, we're the ones with the real change.

We will now start this campaign and convention doing everything the way we have always done.

Yeah Right!   September 3rd, 2008 10:19 pm ET

Rachel Maddow was correct when she said "noun-verb-POW". I guess for Guiliani it's 'noun-verb-9/11'

And we now know the outcome of that. A war in Iraq, a country that did not contain WMDs and spending $10 billion a month in that country while they have a $80 billion surplus. Please, no way, no how , no McCain

Drew   September 3rd, 2008 10:18 pm ET

The Repubs chanting "Drill Baby Drill"....now that is a sad day for our country and proves that rich Republicans dont care about the environment.......Obama at least is in touch with working families.....that is why I'll be voting for him

Phil Newton in Murphy, Oregon   September 3rd, 2008 10:18 pm ET

The bloody shirt they are waving is from their self-inflicted wounds.

Say goodnight, Rudy

kriss g   September 3rd, 2008 10:18 pm ET

I find it amazing that the Republican speeches are little on a plan and all about attacking Obama. How exactly is that putting the country first?

Chuck   September 3rd, 2008 10:18 pm ET

One mention. How do you people keep your jobs. Quit poisoning our young minds and set them free. Stop the bias, it only hurts America.

Belle, NC   September 3rd, 2008 10:18 pm ET

You know it's truly disappointing the way these people go on television and lie to the American people just because they are Republicans and they don't have the guts to stand up and say that what their party is doing is crap. Country first my xxx. McCain is not a MAVERICK because he chose to win an election over doing the best thing for the American people. It so sad that they could make such flippant decisions that can affect peoples' lives forever. HYPOCRITES.

Being conservative does not mean being blind !! These folks speaking at Republican convention and making personal attacks seem to be rally stressed. Hello, don't show your true colors.., its backfiring now !! Times have changed, wake up !

Ronald   September 3rd, 2008 10:18 pm ET

You can see that Conservatives have learned nothing. Same old politics of divide and conquer. I'm waiting for someone to tell me something about McCain other then he is a POW and he has been in politics for way too long.

S. Boatman   September 3rd, 2008 10:18 pm ET

They Like Waving A Bloody Shirt. . . . Its Got Everyone Elses Blood On It But Theirs! They Yell Out . . . . Look At How Much Of Your Blood We Have Spilled!

boston observer   September 3rd, 2008 10:18 pm ET

This evening has been vile ad hominem attacks. Guiliani's personal nastiness - joking about "community organizing" - is beneath the dignity of the process. It makes the Democrats look like the party of values, decency, respect.

And chants of "drill baby drill". That's the answer? The vacuousness of the ideas and the party are abundantly clear.

I pray for our country that the Democrats win.

mark from LA   September 3rd, 2008 10:17 pm ET

I committ $5 to McCain for every time Guiliani mentions "9/11".
And I'm going to donate $10 to McCain for every time the Drive By Media mentions Palin's daughter being pregnant.

Three months ago I promised never to vote for McCain, but now with Dems and Media so against Palin, there's got to be something good about her...I'm now going to vote for McCain and Palin!!

Gracie   September 3rd, 2008 10:17 pm ET

I'm NOW disgusted by the whole RNC.

It's has been nothing but a "CIRCUS OF CLOWNS" prancing around on stage.

WHY in GOD'S name is Rudy Gulliani even speaking? He's NOT a Senator, he's NOT a Congressman, He's NOT a Governor.... he's part of a OLD era that is NOT longer credible. He was a Mayor, and NOT even a very good one. His banner of glory is going to be 9/11 over and over and over!! That is ALL Rudy can speak about.

Gulliani does NOT have any credibility what-so-ever when it comes to politics. He's a "has been". NO ONE cares what he has to say.

Go home Rudy and cuddle up to your mistress of a wife!

wendy   September 3rd, 2008 10:17 pm ET

The republicans are only for themselves. If you don't believe what they do.You're not American in their eyes. You're not a patriot.I don't believe that about them, but they believe that about me because I don't follow their ideology.I thought this was American. They are a mean, cynical,us vs.them party that is not inclusive. It is very frightening because they are so...hateful.THIS IS THE MOST HATEFILLED CONVENTION I'VE EVER SEEN.PLEASE MEDIA-STATE THIS AS THE CASE BECAUSE YOU KNOW IT'S THE TRUTH!

Put Off   September 3rd, 2008 10:17 pm ET

I am very put off by what I am watching tonight. I don't know how to fit into this "us v. them" politics. I don't understand what they are saying, where they are going, what they are talking about. I feel completely alienated by this party and I honestly am at a loss for words...

Politics is dirty, but a man who says he is bi-partisan and a maverick but surrounds himself by people who are very partisan and very single-minded, I am not so sure that he is the man to vote for.

Cedarflute   September 3rd, 2008 10:16 pm ET

When you haven't anything intelligent or honest to say, about all you can do is wave the flag or blame someone else for the problems. The Republicans obviously have nothing very useful to say.

Somehow it's appropriate that their convention is being held in the same venue used by professional wrestling. Both of them think they're for real.

Ramesh Shrestha   September 3rd, 2008 10:16 pm ET

Rusty Rudy is speaking right now. All he is doing is stripping himself off and making fool of himself. What is going on? Why are these loser jackals howling tonight? What a shame, republicans!!!!

M. Zannis   September 3rd, 2008 10:16 pm ET

Bashing the media because of negative news is now reported as a positive ticket to win election to the White House? ??????
What kind of world are we now living in?
The US constitution it seems is dead or dying....One Nation under God is now used it seems, by at least one vice-presidential hopeful, as one God under one one nation... or for one nation only namely the USA? Iraqi living or dead it seems are Godless...I suppose so are Canadians like me or my cousin in England who was born a Jew in Iraq.(Godless whatever or wherever!).

The right to bear arms is the right to brandish arms( & all manner of arms) ...If moose are the only agenda, I would be pleased to share recipes with Ms Palin, I am sure the kids love her cocoction of wild game......but I think there is something else on the plate...
.Free speech is now slurred freely at Mr Obama, who said absolutely nothing negative at the Republican Vice-Presidential candidate...but thanks for no thanks..USA you are in trouble...
opinion from Canada (only one person...we have 30 plkus millions of others that know the USA better than most Americans).

Matt   September 3rd, 2008 10:16 pm ET

Giuliani's belittlement of Obama's community service work is am INSULT to the thousands of Americans who work every day to better the lives of Americans; often for little money and no recognition.

What we see here tonight is the Republican Party as a DESPERATE PATHETIC MOB chanting hateful, false statements to scare the American voter into voting for a candidate (McCain) that promises more of the same.

John   September 3rd, 2008 10:15 pm ET

Is anybody listening to these people? What has John McCain led? America is really in trouble with the repugs

Steve - southern Illinois   September 3rd, 2008 10:15 pm ET

They're beating their chests over John McCain's military service. Unfortunately a lot of us remember how disrespectful they were to another war hero named John Kerry.

Justin in CA   September 3rd, 2008 10:15 pm ET

I would welcome one of Rudys crap 911 speeches compared to the garbage coming out of his mouth tonight. I always thought he was manipulative, an adulterer, narrow sided, and an angry little man that couldn't even get his own son to vote for him. Now I know way. Sorry Rudy, scare tactics won't work this time. Im not afraid of the future and all the change we will make. Staring with you and your party.

the truth in November

Mitt Romney's speech was absolutley divisive and disgusting

Huckabee is actually the best Republican speaker I've heard since Reagan (both decent men)

Verdict……the republicans are obviously in a mess…..so few seem to get it

those who do arent even in the race ……..perhaps wisely so

Obama/Biden

or Ron Paul

but I wouldnt touch McCain/Palin with a ten foot pole

Sherry, Atlanta   September 3rd, 2008 10:14 pm ET

AND THIS, IS AMERICA!

chris S.   September 3rd, 2008 10:14 pm ET

the republicans are full of it, rather than talk about the real issues that are concerning americans they rather try to convince themselves that gov. palin is a good v.p. and to atttack sentor's obama's character. it looks like a contry club for old men rather than a convention

Greg FL.   September 3rd, 2008 10:14 pm ET

The GOP is still stuck in the past. They are out of touch. they really screwed up the last eight years and some how they want us to go back to the well for four more. Gulianni talks about changing the facts when you don't have an argument. Who is out with personal attacks? It's the GOP. They have no ideas, so they attack the other guy.

Edgar - Orlando   September 3rd, 2008 10:14 pm ET

No one piece of legislation has been written by Obama – how do you like that. Romney words – throw big liberal democrats out of Washington. AMEN!

Indy who just went DEM   September 3rd, 2008 10:14 pm ET

So going into a community and being a community organizer is a joke to the repubs!!!

Its a joke when people help others! I work in my community and you low-life elitist just lost my vote in ANY ELECTION!

NEVER GOING TO VOTE MCCAIN NOW! NEVER!

California Gold   September 3rd, 2008 10:14 pm ET

21st Century Republicans need to learn from the past. They will keep Rudy 9/11 Guiliani banging the drum until he is a national joke.

NO MORE WAR FOR OIL

Democrat Abroad   September 3rd, 2008 10:14 pm ET

Bill – it still sickens me to see Giuliani et al question Obama's patriotism and dedication to service when, as the first African-American candidate, his security detail, daily, must be a nightmare. Then, the mocking of "community organizer", for which if this country had a national service program we would be strong enough domestically to choose service and building our communities, rather than destroying them in foreign wars or wealthy elites. Sorry, McCain lacks the judgement to lead us into the future in the right direction.

disappointed   September 3rd, 2008 10:14 pm ET

i used to like giuliani, but he's a real disappointment now. cheap shots will never earn you respect. tell me how you are going to make things better, because hope is a strategy, that is all we have to go on now, because reality looks pretty sad.

Nick - Arlington, VA   September 3rd, 2008 10:14 pm ET

God...yes that is exactly what i think as i watch this....are they being noble? Maybe they think if they show off just how conservative they want this country to be that they will lose all support from the middle where they need to win...thus nobly ending the last 8 years...a kamikaze ride into the ground.

I don't believe it!   September 3rd, 2008 10:13 pm ET

This man is a joke.. He claim he has facts, well, he nothing, a person who lost, and will never win in my book

Chuck   September 3rd, 2008 10:13 pm ET

No mention yet you lefty knuckleheads.

RNC convention > Ambien   September 3rd, 2008 10:13 pm ET

Rudy, John McCain is not ready to be President of the US.

Republican non voting for McCain/Palin   September 3rd, 2008 10:13 pm ET

The American's from the State of Ilinois and all of the other States that the RNC has made fun of ought to be really happy to vote for McCain/Palin. We need to see interviews of all of the people that Barack Obama helped in the State of Illinois. Why would the Republican's laugh and make fun of those people?

I'm sorry to say I am a Republican. I'm so ashamed at the way the so called "Christians" are making fun of people and spreading lies.

This is shameful.

Everyone knows that when you don't have real answers or plans to help America, you have to use scare tactics and push fear down the throats of the American people. It worked for Bush 2 terms in a row. Hopefully, America will open their eyes. And I pray that everyone who posts on all of these blogs, takes their butts to the polls and stop this ReThuglican propaganda.

zach   September 3rd, 2008 10:12 pm ET

Watching Giuliani's speech, all I can say is that it comes off very superior and dismissive. Rudy just said "he worked as a community organizer (pause, then a laugh) what?!". To under-estimate Obama's strength is to lose the election. I don't get this argument at all. Now Giuliani is saying that Obama's move to the Senate as a "celebrity Senator" is something that can only happen in America. While mocking a popular aspect of Obama's personal story (that it is only something that can happen in America) is seems to also be attacking the American people who elected him...but then again I guess the Republicans weren't counting on Illinois anyways? I don't know, this entire speech just seems so petty, contradictory, and hypocritical...who knows though, maybe this will rally the so-called "bubba vote" of rural, white-males...

Michael   September 3rd, 2008 10:12 pm ET

I'm confused by Giuliani's speech. What has McCain led?

Jack   September 3rd, 2008 10:12 pm ET

it was honestly frightening to watch a bunch of old white ladies/men chanting "zero" in relation to obama/biden...these people don't represent america and i find it hard to believe any independent/democrat would be encouraged to vote for john mccain after what we've seen tonight...disgusting
