Oilman T. Boone Pickens spoke to CNN.

ST PAUL (CNN) –- John McCain’s running mate Sarah Palin needs to “portray herself as a leader” Wednesday night, if she does that, “she is going to be very popular,” Texas oilman T. Boone Pickens said in a CNN interview inside the Xcel Energy Center at the Republican National Convention.

Pickens – fresh off a visit to the Democratic National Convention – was in St. Paul on Wednesday to push what he modestly calls the Pickens Plan, a scheme to wean the United States off imported oil and instead rely more on renewable energy resources.

“I have a story to tell. My story is the Pickens Plan and that is the plan for energy for America,” he said of his Minnesota visit.

Pickens is particularly interested in hearing what Senator McCain has to say about energy in his address Thursday night.

In 2004, Pickens was among the highest-profile supporters of Swift Boat Veterans and POWs for Truth, giving $1 million to the group that savaged Democratic presidential candidate Sen. John Kerry's war record.

He contributed $2.5 million the same year to the Progress for America voter fund, a group closely linked to President Bush and the Republican National Committee, and tens of thousands of dollars to individual Republican candidates for Congress, according to Federal Election Commission filings.

But Pickens says he isn’t taking sides this election and doesn’t haven’t an opinion about which presidential candidate would do a better job of decreasing American dependence on foreign oil.

“I am totally non-partisan in this race,” he said, adding that “both parties are going to have to work like hell” if they want to take the White House in November.

Did anyone even mention about all those thousands of lives that we have lost in Afganistan and Iraq defending America? Seems McCain already did for all of them in Vietnam.

Shamefull indeed. These Republicans are all morons !!

Democrat Abroad looking for GOP beef   September 3rd, 2008 11:19 pm ET

Where's the beef? Pickens has to be thinking "What the dickens?" When the GOP chants "Drill, Drill, Drill." Alex talks of the GOP being most "macho," we'll I'm living in a Latin country and macho isn't necessarily the best analogy for leadership, good judgement, and judicious use of power. Dems know the Energy issue is the World's Security issue that you cannot delink and be "macho" about.

used to be a republican untill Bush and McCain   September 3rd, 2008 11:19 pm ET

Who owns the pipeline in Alaska soon to open? Bush Family? Halliburton? John McCain. Sarah Palin? She reminds me of my ex wife and allot of attractive women in the worlds oldest profession, talk out of both side of her mouth, Lying out of one side to gain profit and fame and screaming out of the other. Was Reagan ever a Governor? Didn’t New York just have a maverick Governor?

Sarah Palin.......I AM NOT IMPRESSED! Just more of the same racist politics this country has had for years. I can't wait to cast my vote for Senator Barack Obama.

Lee   September 3rd, 2008 11:18 pm ET

Palin is incorrect on several items:

- Just because I do not believe in a misguided war does not mean I have given up on America. I do not believe we are close to winning. . . I believe CHINA has won based on the new deal they won with Iraq earlier this week. . . oh, and a little company with close ties to the Republican Party – Haliburton.
- The research I've done on that "Bridge to Nowhere" is that Palin finally decided against it because she wanted MORE money, not less. I can't find a record of the "no thanks" that she is professing.
- Sarah Palin believes a woman can walk through any door, but God forbid that she can make a personal decision about her body and something like abortion that needs personal thought.

My observation of the RNC is that it looks like an elitist, hate-filled, judgmental group of people. I know many Republicans and I'm sure they don't mean the way it sounds.

Bottom Line: Palin is NO HILLARY CLINTON. I so admire Hillary, and am very sad how we have treated her and Bill this year. She cannot sway my vote. It feels like the "real" old Republican Party which is separatist and closed. After 8 years, I want Change. This is the Party that has led the Country to where we are today. McCain has been right there the whole time. I am not thrilled by either choice, but the lesser of the evils is Obama. I love AMERICA!

We need Obama Biden!   September 3rd, 2008 11:17 pm ET

Yeah, she portrayed herself as a leader...a cheerleader! All she did was introduce her family, take shots at her opponents, and talk about John McCain. She never gave any of her views on issues like the economy, health care, and oh yeah um abortion! She still sounds like she's answering questions in a beauty pageant or she should have a brick wall in the back of her with a mic in her hand. There was no credit to her opponents for anything and showed no indications on how she will try to work with other people. Since when is being a community organizer to try to help people less fortunate a bad thing?

Woman Disgusted   September 3rd, 2008 11:15 pm ET

She gave us a kindergarten joke what's the difference between a hockey mom and a pitbull=lipstick. The GOPers had buttons that said that "They are voting for the hot chick".

And Biden is sexist!!!!!!!!!

Only at the GOP convention can sex outside of marriage, community involvement, and whole hell the whole kit and kaboodle of Golden Rules and Christianity.

They are twisted, so brainwashed it's downright scary...I've never in my life imagined people in America could be so brainwashed, this is just freakish. November can't come soon enough but if this goes on I'm going to puke.

Palin did very well with all three.

Oh and by the way, enough already with the Sarah Barracuda title. So she was competitive on her high school basketball team. Since when did getting a cute nickname for being a competitive high school athlete translate to being Vice President? Enough!!!

What are her views? Humm 4 month old child. Who is breast feeding him? Is she (or the husband) – (oh, sorry, he is gone on job site 9 months out of the year...) taking care of the special needs child?

Odd to me that she will not promote teaching use of a condom or birth control (see pregnant 17 year old daughter), but will accept federal and state funds to care for a special needs child.

Diane Dagenais Turbide   September 3rd, 2008 11:10 pm ET

Good evening,

maybe this convention is about fear but one thing for sure people are not afraid to work like hell to win!

We keep putting down other great americans and we keep using the tactic of fear and insecurity.

When in fact, We have reached another level of consciousness and a very much different type of emergency preparedness for this country and abroad. People are asking for real change from real people! Too Many will be missing the 21st diverse train that needs to be part of every american life in order to live in a more peaceful and respectful world as much as home as abroad! Listening tonight from all the great speakers are words that do not resonate any respect and authenticity in bringing the world to a better place.

We have emerging societies taking roots as much as home as abroad and we do not seek to unite them and do not seem to see those societies as being part of our lives.

Look around tonight, open your eyes and your heart since that is the most renewable energy that America can use at home and export abroad and it is the energy we need in these uncertain times!

The power of authentic words of respect, dignity nd equality have far more greater impact than any word that I have heard tonight!

God Bless you!
Diane Dagenais Turbide

I truly wish that Palin et al would stop talking about Evil. Evil is a horrible horrible phrase to use on other human beings of any shape form or fashion.

California Gold   September 3rd, 2008 11:08 pm ET

The speech was NOT written for Palin. It was written without regard for the candidate. It was generic. This is what the McCain campaign stated. The campaign speech writers had to tweak it for a female to deliver instead of a male.

Senator and Mrs. Obama wrote their own speeches as did Senator Biden. Additionally they don't need to rely on teleprompters. When you speak truthfully, honestly and from your deepest beliefs you don't need teleprompters or applause signs. You have captured the imagination and hope of the audience and lifted the listener to greater insight and energy. That's why I'm voting for Obama-Biden.

Deborah   September 3rd, 2008 11:07 pm ET

Not impressed at all. You could tell her speech was written for her. She hasn't a clue on what she was speaking about. I'm also insulted that they thin because she's a woman, I would vote for her. Women are not that shallow.

I don't believe it!   September 3rd, 2008 11:07 pm ET

Who wrote this speech. I can't believe she has no substance.
All about bashing, nothing about bring this country back on its feet.

If this lady get into office, we are in trouble. Nothing about helping the poor people, nothing about getting New Orleans back on track. Nothing about healthcare, nothing about education, nothing about with substance. This is a joke!

I am sitting here with a 1/2 tank of gas and have 26 miles to travel one way to work.
Homeless people on the street, with signs begging for food, money, and jobs.
She sound so stupid, who wrote this speech, its a joke. Bashing is not going to solve our ecomony problems.
I am crying because, I know I too may end up on the streets if I let her or McCain into office, because when you are rich, you only care about money and more money!

Hillary Clinton blew Sarah Palin out of the water with her speech. Maybe thats why this is so hard to watch. I can't help but compare. Its kindof like a train wreck unfortunately.

Bill King - Seattle, WA   September 3rd, 2008 11:05 pm ET

This woman is a complete joke, with zero credibility and less qualifications, and even the Republican elites think so as evidenced by the off-mic commentary published earlier today.

And yes, I supported a *QUALIFIED* woman for President.

Carol   September 3rd, 2008 11:00 pm ET

They wrote a good Republican speech for you Palin. All I've heard is the typical Republican attacks and nothing about how she will help the economy.

Of course I did hear about her veto power: She didnt tell them about what she vetoed.

Funds for education, alternative fuel exploration, senior citizens programs, healthcare, unwed teen program funding, environmental protection, etc etc.

She vetoed a lot alright, check it out. It's nice to know that you think you know more than T Boone Pickens about oil.

I'm amazed that she can spew out outright lies and falsehoods and these people will believe it lock stock and barrel without even looking into it.

No wonder we have had eight years of Bush.

Wow. After Barack Obama and campaign specifically went out of their way to demonstrate courtesy and respect for Sarah Palin and her family, and demand the same of everyone else, she stood there and mocked him for laughs with half-truths and an outright mean spirit. Obviously, respect is not one of the abundant resources in Alaska, nor even in Palin's own family. She's closer to the animal she mentioned than we thought.

BJ   September 3rd, 2008 10:59 pm ET

Palin is a weak vice-president selection and does not seem believable and could not run the country if John McCain was not able to. Her speech is very weak and will not survive outside Alaska. Her attacks on Barack Obama is funny because she has never done anything of significance yet. She talks about serving the American people but when I look at her and the 30,000 people in St. Paul, there are no minorities in the crowd. Last time I seen statistics, white america is shrinking and US is becoming more of a melting pot. How can she represent us when she has no clue of supporting minorities of all types. What is her foreign experience? Please help me understand why I should believe her as a VP or a future President of the US.

Lance   September 3rd, 2008 10:59 pm ET

Sarah Palin is an unpatriotic secessionist pretending to be a v.p.

Go back to burning flags with your Alaska First buddies Sarah.

Rochelle   September 3rd, 2008 10:59 pm ET

What, she has no experience, no caring for family values, the health of the USA is truly in a fix if Palin/Mcshame are elected. If she cares nothing for her own DS child what will she think about Americans, (absolutely nothing)! She leaves her family so much theres sickness, pregnancy and a host of other things going on here. She can't monitor her house let alone the USA. This is too scary for me. I was a Republican but, I'm in another party and I'm not sure who I'll vote for but for certain it won't be McShame/Palin. This campaign is palin (in color) compared to the Independents and Dems and the green party. At least I do have a choice and it won't be Republican.

She might as well get ready for the onslaught of things coming out on her by the Democrats. By the end of the week all kinds of things will be out on her. She offended the media and you know they don't take to kindly to what she said. The Enquirer is already reporting she has had and affair. Now some of you might laugh at that but we all know that the Enquirer puts it out there and then all the others media follows their lead. She is done!!! LOL

Rick   September 3rd, 2008 10:57 pm ET

If Sarah Palin's speech tonight is a preview of what is to come, she should have no trouble pushing McCain over the top. Can I vote for her for President? Barack Who?

Steve - southern Illinois   September 3rd, 2008 10:56 pm ET

The Republicans are PATHETIC. They call for bi-partisanship and cooperation, but then insult the other party by claiming that democrats are un – american and alien. Giuliana's attack was ugly, bitter and sad. The Republicans are stooping to new lows, something I never thought was possible. He acts as if Obama attacked Palin, when he's barely said a paragraph about her situation. In fact, he says that they should "lay off her family."

Romney went so low to attack Obama's wife. WOW. Couldn't find anything better to say Mitty boy? And he talks about the Eastern Elite, a club he's proudly part of. Oh and by the way, Illinois isn't a North Eastern state, it's Midwestern.

Ugly and bitter were the two words that describe these two days.

seah   September 3rd, 2008 10:54 pm ET

She Shall do exactly that.

What Palin needs is the media to be fair and unbiased.

Up to this point in the Election Obama has got a free ride, and all fluff. His opponents have been dragged over the coals.

It would be nice to see real reporting again.

Kevin   September 3rd, 2008 10:54 pm ET

I really feel Giuliani speech was degrading to ALL Americans. The nasty attacks coming from a man who can't keep his pete* inside his zipper is very credible. Republicans claim to be a party of morals and standards but Giuliani wasn't satisfied with the woman he said vows to before God and had an AFFAIR. I guess that's the USA way?? Come on Republicans!

Sheryl   September 3rd, 2008 10:53 pm ET

Despite the fact that I really wanted to give Sarah Palin a chance, to really try and hear what she has to say...I'm experiencing major difficulty. Is this a pep rally, hockey game, or a very serious political event where she needs to demonstrate experience and leadership? Between the pit bull with lipstick joke and the constant head tossing and nose-wrinkling sneers (what is she doing anyway??), I can't focus on what she's saying, because I keep expecting her to actually utter a growl. Her attitude and tone are in perfect keeping with the mean mockery of the night. I can't believe he chose her over Huckabee. At least he knows how to speak in public.

Republicans are Sexist Racists Party   September 3rd, 2008 10:48 pm ET

The Republicans party is ugly. bitter, hateful, war mongers. There is no love those peoples heart. For them to treat a human being the way they treat Obama is Evil. They cannot beat him on the issues so the resort to lowdown, lying and deceiving tactics about his experience. This is they reason why I could not watch their convention. I know many, many people will nto watch because they know they will not tell the truth about anything. The Republcian are on their last leg. They will not win. The people of America is tired of this old, nasty, dirty politices. They want a fresh, new, message of hope and inspiration back by a real PLAN to change American. They know that Obama and Biden is the only onces that can do that for them.

Bill, N.M.   September 3rd, 2008 10:47 pm ET

Mr. Pickens, you are a wonderful oil man, a good steward and seem like a nice person. That said I must disagree with you on Ms. Palin. Given her lack of credentials, lack of experience, lack of education, alliance with a group who wants Alaska to secede from the Union, cloud of illegal conduct in office which is under investigation, her sorry and out-of-touch view on a woman's rights and her dazzling stupidity in preaching abstinence, Ms. Palin has a lot to overcome before she can even think of creating the illusion of being a leader. The first 72 hours of her exposure was political poison.

T. Boone Pickens. If you don't want to pick sides buddy, then you should NOT be making any comments. Does that make any sense.

NOT to worry, with the night that the RNC is having, Gov. Palin's speech is NOT going to save it now. NOT after Rudy's rampage speech and Mitt's disappointing ramblings.

Gov. Palin's "I am woman, watch me roar" is far from saving this convention.

Wait a minute – when did the PRESUMPTIVE NOMINEE nominate her? I missed it. Has McWarmonger been voted on? He's still the presumptive nominee himself.

Has he nominated her? She just ACCEPTED.

How presumptuous !!!!

Giuliani .... was his humor an attempt to via for a late night comedy show? Maybe a stint on Saturday Night Live? Or maybe he'll take Leno's spot? How could anyone take him serious?

I am now a stong Obama supporter! No more on the fence for me!

The republicans have shown their lack of respect for the people of America in the past, and certainly tonight.

Obama for me!
