Fred Thompson said Barack Obama is unprepared to be president.
Fred Thompson said Barack Obama is unprepared to be president.

ST PAUL (CNN) – Barack Obama is wholly untested and unprepared to be president, former Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson said Tuesday - the most pointed criticisms yet of the Democratic presidential nominee delivered at the scaled-back GOP convention.

"Democrats present a history making nominee for president," Thompson told the cheering crowd. "History making in that he is the most liberal, most inexperienced nominee to ever run for president.

"Apparently they believe that he would match up well with the history making, Democrat controlled Congress," he continued in the prime-time speech. "History making because it's the least accomplished and most unpopular Congress in our nation's history."

Thompson, who abandoned his own presidential bid after poor showings in the first round of primaries early this year, also criticized the Illinois senator for comments at a recent faith forum during which he declined to say when he believed human life began.

"We need a president who doesn't think that the protection of the unborn or a newly born baby is above his pay grade," Thompson said in what was a clear reference to Obama's comments at a forum sponsored by Rick Warren last month.

Thompson faced criticism during his own presidential run when a YouTube clip of a 1994 Senate debate showed Thompson declaring, "The ultimate decision on abortion should be left with the woman and not the government."

It was also revealed Thompson once lobbied for an abortion-rights group.

Some of you extremists are sad and more than a little bit frightening. Barack Obama is the most liberal Senator in the United States Senate. This is not "opinion", this is documented fact based on voting records. "Centrist"? Yeah, if you're comparing him to Hugo Chavez and Saddam Hussein.

Where did the term red meat come from. That's all I' hearinf from the reporters. Where was that term during the other convention? Can you say bias?

Just look around that convention hall, it is 99% white....this is not representative of America! The Republican party is old, white, tired, boring, and full of hypocrites sitting so high on their pedestals they can't see the country that is changing right before their eyes. They just don't get it, bless their little hearts.

Go Obama-Biden, you guys are on your way for sure!

Elle   September 2nd, 2008 11:22 pm ET

The RNC just reiterated the fact that the Republicans are disconnected from majority of Americans. They feel things are not as bad. Fred Thompson said. "Listening to the other side you think we were in a depression." Uhhhhh, maybe not for you Mr. Hollywood actor, but its pretty darn close for the rest of us.

I cannot WAIT for the debates.

Are any of these speeches going to get a grade?I noticed grades were given for speeches last week for the Democractic speeches.I did not watch Fred Thompson's speech.I figured it would be a speech to spin the sorry job the Republicans have did,and bash Obama. This is no surprise. What I really want to know is where is Sarah Palin?I noticed Biden was there most nights during the DNC Convention. Why was Rudy Guliani speech cancelled. Is he going to be the real VP nominee?

McCain is truely an American HERO. We should never elect a President that has never served in the military. McCain obviously stands tall as a patriot and is unyielding. The people of America seem to forget how we became FREE. I fought for my country! Did you! John McCain did!

and now this from factcheck.org :

A New Stitch in a Bad Pattern
September 2, 2008
A McCain ad wrongly claims Obama plans "painful tax increases" for working families. And who's talking about deficits?
Summary
McCain's new ad puts another stitch in what we've called his pattern of deceit on Obama's tax plan. This one claims Obama and congressional Democrats plan to push forward "painful tax increases on working American families" and that they will bring about "years of deficits," "no balanced budgets" and "billions in new government spending."

The ad is plain wrong about higher taxes on working families. In fact, Obama's economic plan would produce a tax cut for the majority of American households, with middle-income earners benefiting most. As for "years of deficits," exactly the same claim could be made about McCain's program. It's unlikely either Obama or McCain would balance the budget, and both are projected to increase the debt by trillions.

Analysis
We've already reported on at least three other ads, in both Spanish and English, from Sen. John McCain's campaign that distort his rival's tax policy. The ads claim that, for example, Democratic Sen. Barack Obama would raise taxes "on the sale of your home" and that he has a "history of raising taxes" and that he wanted to raise taxes on "families" making just $42,000 a year.

Claims like these have led us to say that McCain's campaign is engaging in a "pattern of deceit" when it comes to describing Obama's tax plan. This most recent ad fits right into the template.

Hilarious- a grade B actor Thompson criticizing a brilliant mind like Obama. Hate to tell Fred but this fall Obama will be made a real president and Fred will continue his failed boob tube career. I don't watch TV but something tells me from what I've seen it isn't much of a performance.

Wanda an Obama Supporter from MO   September 2nd, 2008 11:19 pm ET

This is the most boring convention that I have ever seen. Normally I have CNN all the time. This convention is putting me to sleep. It is so lame and uninteresting. Just look at last week, the DNC put on a more diverse, interesting, and full of life convention. The issues were put out there every night. The RNC have no life whatsoever. No wonder Obama is leading in the polls and will keep leading all the way up until Nov. 4th. And I'm sorry, Palin can not match up to Biden. She was not a good choice for McCain. Too much baggage. It's no wonder that the McCain camp had to send a delegation to Alaska for damage control. They don't know what the next story that is going to come out of Alaska regarding Palin. And she need to stop quoting Hillary, she can not come close to Hillary Clinton nor is she going to get her voters over to the McCain camp. Hillary supporters are more smarter than that.

Pam   September 2nd, 2008 11:18 pm ET

Is there anyone at that convention under the age of 60?

Antonio, Colorado Springs   September 2nd, 2008 11:18 pm ET

Mike R -

we all know who Palin is its what she represents that most people call into question. Maybe thats something you need to look at. She is AGAINST any kind of gay rights, she is AGAINST sexual orientation being considered a part of hate crimes, she tried to get books banned from a library becuase SHE thought they were objectionable, she was in FULL SUPPORT for the bridge to nowhere when running for governor than flipped when she got elected. Did she also fight corruption in the party in Alaska? Yes and MAJOR props for her becuase hardly anyone in politics today can do that successfully. Did she abuse her power? Who knows at this point. But to say she is the most qualified for a republican ticket is ludacris and you know it. She is a governor for 20 months. Ok, great. That doesnt mean she has more experience than Obama. The truth of the matter is that NONE of these people have been in a position of such absolute power how do we REALLY know that they will or won't do or even act? We dont. ZThe only thing we can go off of is what they believe in and what they want to do. And for McCain, although he is trying hard to seperate himself, his policies (that POLICIES not McCain himself) are too close to Bush's and the religious rights current policies. And look where that has gotten us.

Eric   September 2nd, 2008 11:18 pm ET

Obama is a centrist and his 12 years long public service show a balanced view: First lie. Obama has the same experience than Lincoln had when he ran for office: second lie. Obama clearly stated, and if Thmpson had ever read a book he could attest, that in religion (serious ones, not the evangelical nutcases) and in science, it is not definite when you can state that the embryo is firmly a distinct human being. He did say he would do whatever to lower the abortion rate. (forced marriage excluded, Palin-style). But hey, a President who can think.. no way.

But the saddest is to see that after 35 minutes, Thompson could not come up with one policy that could lift the country up. Nothing. Only vague and personal accusations. No wonder his own campaign backfired before it started.

Dave   September 2nd, 2008 11:18 pm ET

Fred Thompson = Lazy as a fox

GOP = God Oil Party

Justin   September 2nd, 2008 11:17 pm ET

This election will be the first step in leaving old and outdated Republican's behind. Republican's are redneck racists and use Bobby Jindal and Sarah Palin as disguises to the fact. Republicans are highly contradictory. They are pro-life but yet support the death penalty. They are pro-life but do nothing about health care. You can't convince they value human life. I would choose an intelligent president over one with experience any day. Intelligent decisions not experienced decisions will save this country. I'm one of those people who are making in the top 5% of the country, and I would be more than happy to pay more taxes to have a democrat in power. My respect for Republican's has turned to disrepect. I was foolishly once an indepedent.

james bowman   September 2nd, 2008 11:17 pm ET

Why do most if not all the people at that convention look the same?....and the tone i got from there is just the banging of military/war drums......i get no sense of any chance of unity if ANYBODY from that convention is elected!!!!

Proud American of African Descent   September 2nd, 2008 11:17 pm ET

I have not heard the case why a republican should be entrusted again with guiding the U.S.A. when we have lost millions of jobs, millions of homes, trillions of dollars and most importantly; tens of thousands of U.S. Military families destroyed by a war we were tricked into. Why?

Huffington   September 2nd, 2008 11:17 pm ET

Voting for Change   September 2nd, 2008 11:15 pm ET

Fred Thompson completely lost me as he has not referred to something that is affecting all of us across the board. THE ECONOMY. If the republican are going to act as this is not a problem then I guess I will not watch anymore. I always like hearing the two side of the coin however I cannot listen to them talk about the war and foreign policy without them even acknowledging that the economy is the number one problem in USA.
The Democrats talked in their convention about all the issues that are most present in americans minds even if its not what everyone wants to hear they still addressed them.

Godfrey   September 2nd, 2008 11:15 pm ET

This convention is reminiscent of the last two Republican conventions-and we know the results of those!

Any good American with an ounce of common sense and half a brain will reject this side show. It is time for new leadership with new ideas that reflect progressive America.

The Republicans have simply nothing to offer this election cycle.

Back to the drawing board.....

LaVelle from Atlanta, GA   September 2nd, 2008 11:15 pm ET

Fred Thompson further proved why Republicans are so out of touch with Americans. After saying Democrats act as if we are in the "Great Depression", someone should remind Fred how many millions of people do not have healthcare as well as jobless and suffering because of high gas prices because of a War that should not have taken place in the first place.

Observer from MA   September 2nd, 2008 11:15 pm ET

Is it just me or does anyone else think that this party doesn't seem to represent the diversity of this great country? This image just reaffirms my opinion that the GOP party does not in any way represent me. It is a party for the rich few.

Ed   September 2nd, 2008 11:15 pm ET

Same old, same old. Had no idea Thompson had grown so old, it really hammered in the fact that this is a bunch of old guys trying to hold on to power. If inspiring the people doesn't work, go ahead and bash the opposition. This clueless Republican party is playing right into the Democrats hands.

Obama all the way   September 2nd, 2008 11:15 pm ET

AnNd someone please explain why we should not change America, not apologize when we are wrong and not be the nation that eveyone fears.

I am sick of the world looking at us like we think our poop doesn't stink and we have all the answers and that we are too good for everyone else in the world. We don't and we aren't!! We need to work together as a nation AND with the rest of the world.

What a hot mess these Repubs are!!!

Mike, Syracuse NY   September 2nd, 2008 11:15 pm ET

Fred Thompson's comment that McCain's years as a POW don't qualify him to be President, but say a lot about his character speaks volumns. When has Obama ever been faced with decisions like McCain had to make when turning down early release offered because his father was an admiral? Never. Obama took 20 years to figure out that his pastor was a an anti-American racist, and only dumped him when it became a political issue. McCain has more character than Obama will ever have.

William Dixon   September 2nd, 2008 11:14 pm ET

Our vote will be for McCain/Palin hands down!!

Let's vote for Obama – then we can watch the White House burn down with Biden holding the match. You lefties amuse me – you're all about pointing the finger and not into solving problems. Talk about yawning? How about what the Dems preach every four years. They hate the right, the world is all the right's fault, they are the devil. I'm sorry – kool-aid is for kids. You know why they drink it – they don't know any better.

Naomi P.   September 2nd, 2008 11:14 pm ET

Terrible speaking skills.....war war war. Any other qualification for McCain

Marie in California   September 2nd, 2008 11:14 pm ET

Fred Thompson was good! And right on target!

As for the lack of skin tone in the audience that someone above noted.....I think people of color need to make some changes in their political affiliations. The Republicans would certainly welcome them. Just as they did Condi Rice. And Michael Steele. And Governor Bobby Jindal. To name just a few.

In any case, don't blame the Republicans for the lack of color among their convention attendees. The parties don't choose their people .... the people choose their parties.

Thompson refered to teleprompter speeches which seemed to get great applause, but it seems to me that he has never actually seen Obama speak at one of his town halls where there are NO teleprompters. McCain on the other hand cannot seem to take a stage anywhere without his trusted note cards that he reads nearly every word from no matter where he is. Anyone notice that his intro of Sarah was mostly with his eyes down?

Speaking of eyes down, how about going back and look at her acceptance speech on Friday and watch McCain and where his eyes wonder.

Love the geriatric comments – and I'm there! They are boring me. Too bad they had to put their convention back on – and what is the real story about Bush not being there? Needed in Washington? He and his cronies should have been forced out of Washington for their failure to respond when Katrina devastated lives. But, as the revered Barbara Bush remarked after Katrina, "those people will be better off" – showing how she raised her little boy to be insensitive to the lives of others. Was not on board with Obama, but I am now.

Ginrou Shirogami   September 2nd, 2008 11:10 pm ET

I wonder how many people that have commented here have actually or are actually watching the convention? How many are just commenting just to comment? How many are just following the same old party lines and rhetoric simply because that's what appears to be expected of them? People are foolish. They like to bark and bite before learning any facts at all, or they like to make up a bunch of facts just to appear educated and well-informed, OR they like to listen to people who have no clue what facts really are, and they base their opinions from the grumblings and whinings of the most vocal few.
CNN won't publish this. This may be too inflammatory, and it definitely will get flammed; based upon the majority of the other knee-jerk posts here, I'm lucky I'm not giving my address out, or I might get tarred, feathered, and ran out on a rail.

Some in audience also proved white men cant (shouldnt) dance...

Didn't Abe Lincoln have even less experience than Obama? And yet he didn't do too bad.

Doesn't George Bush have a lot of experience? And yet he didn't do too well.

diane   September 2nd, 2008 11:09 pm ET

i am not surprise at joe Lieberman had to say tonight, He is not willing to vote for Obama because of his complection

KO   September 2nd, 2008 11:09 pm ET

Let's see, Thompson, who ran one of the worst political campaigns in modern history, criticizes Obama, who ran one of the best. Sounds like jealousy to me. Slink back to Hollywood, Fred–you're a loser.

Obamabots are out in full swing on this forum. You think that you can convience undecided voters by seemings like thoughtless sheep who only see their candidate as their only hope? Most people don't think like that, it doesn't matter if someone is old, young, republican, or whatever. They want a good leader, and obviously you all want an OBAMA, no matter what cost. You Obamabots will cost him the election, trust me.

Liberal Woman   September 2nd, 2008 11:06 pm ET

Let's see, according to the RNC, if I am prolife, have a pregnant daughter and think it's wonderful, and am a war hero, I'll make a great P and VP.

Whatever happened to the issues?

Exactly WHERE DO THEY GET THAT KOOLAID?

Jan Patrick   September 2nd, 2008 11:06 pm ET

He lost me when he started going into gory detail about McCain's POW days. Sorry, but there were thousands of POWs in VietNam. None of them were treated nicely. Every one of those POWs are true heroes, and are to be honored and respected. But none of them are qualified to be President.

Palin ROCKS   September 2nd, 2008 11:05 pm ET

Glad to hear Obama's complete dearth of experience vs. McCain put out there. Excellent speech by Thompson.

Sorry, Bots, Obama just isn't qualified to lead the most powerful country in the free world - it's so bad, in fact, no one even bothers trying to compare him to McCain.

I've never seen a presidential pick (Obama) in competition with a vice presidential pick (Palin)!

Hispanic for Obama - Ricky   September 2nd, 2008 11:05 pm ET

Man I couldnt understand this man. I was so bored I changed the channel to Home Shopping Network for a little more entertainment. Republicans you're on National TV!!! How do you expect everyone else to get excited if even the delegates wont after a night of false Obama bashing. And why do Republicans keep on saying Obama is going to raise taxes? Only if you make over $250k you dimwhits! Everyone else gets a cut, and Warren Buffet agrees he should pay more!!!

Is anyone watching this stuff?

Obama/Biden 08

TyWebb   September 2nd, 2008 11:05 pm ET

Fred, be sure to watch for the next TV script heading your way.

Chuck   September 2nd, 2008 11:05 pm ET

Wow, the Republicans are looking good tonight no matter what the vast liberals on this site have to say. The fact that BHO only got a small bump right after his speech was amazing. The timing and choice of Palin was perfect. Dems cry about change – choosing Joe was NOT change. If Dems are serious about change then they will vote the McCain/Palin ticket in Nov. I was on the fence and early on was moved by the speeches BHO gave. I have since come to learn the fact Republicans keep hammering home...those speeches are just empty words from a basically empty suit. I just wish BHO would show me where he is coming up with every "dime" to pay for all these government programs WITHOUT getting them from you and I. We all know taxes go up, but please spare me the empty promise of only taxing the wealthy. BHO has NEVER voted to Decrease taxes on anyone. 44 times he has voted for an increase in taxes. Quit writing checks your butt can not cash BHO! You liberals keep talking about fear tactics from Republicans, but you play the same game. Quit taking water out of our side of the bucket. McCain/Palin will be better for the US than BHO/Joe.

No   September 2nd, 2008 11:05 pm ET

tim   September 2nd, 2008 11:05 pm ET

Just doing some research... McCain is never been a governor either, so he is just as inexperienced as Obama. In fact, Biden has not been governor either.

So, lets tally it up, if according to the republicans, that being a governor means executive experience.

Obama- no executive experience
McCain- no executive experience
Biden – no executive experience
Paulin- 2 years executive experience

Paulin wins, she should be President.

Harriet Atkinson   September 2nd, 2008 11:05 pm ET

Fred Thompson's totally distorted what Obama said at Saddleback. Rick Warren phrased the question different for Obama and McCain – he asked him at what point is the unborn given human rights. Obama, knowing this was leading to the abortion-rights question then said, that's above my pay grade. He went on to discuss the law and that women making those decisions do so not capriciously but afted deliberations with their doctor, family and pastor.
We can disagree based on our faith, but allow for the law to be upheld. The problem with the pro-life stance, is that it overlooks the law and promotes' ome's personal faith.
Which is more egregious, allowing personal prescriptives to interfere with application of the law or separating your personal faith from other people's options.

HeyMe   September 2nd, 2008 11:05 pm ET

Abortion is the Killing. Say No to Abortion. Say NO to Obama.

Ralph   September 2nd, 2008 11:04 pm ET

The GOP has no shame – how the party of torture can come and talk to us about the horrors of that practice from John McCain's perspective is beyond human understanding. I guess the GOP thinks torture is only bad when the people being tortured look like us. SHAME ON THEM ALL!

satori1   September 2nd, 2008 11:04 pm ET

So what experience does it take to be considered qualified to become the president of the United States of America?
As chief of state, he conducts ceremonial affairs.
As chief executive he is responsible for ensuring federal laws are enforced and nominating officials to serve the federal government.
As foreign policy director, he shares the duties with congress but has the lead position in international affairs.
As commander in chief he is responsible for national defense.
As legislative leader, he proposes laws to be considered by congress.
According to the constitution, to be qualified you must be native born resident for 14 years, and at least 35 years old.

Does being old, and a former prisoner of war make a candidate more qualified? I did not get Thompson's reasoning for claiming that Mccain was a more qualified candidate from the information presented in his speech.

bobby   September 2nd, 2008 11:04 pm ET

More double talking, hippocritical pandering. He wears the Republican suit well.

lisa   September 2nd, 2008 11:04 pm ET

Obama wasn't talking about 'newborn babies' Thompson you idiot, he was talking about the moment of conception.
Funny how much repugs value an embryo but have no problem having our young men and women die in battle and kill others.
McShame is a warmonger, the absolutely last thing we need. I didn't think anything could be worse than Bush, but McShame has done the impossible.
WHAT IS 'MAVERICK' ABOUT SUPPORTING PERMANENT TAX CUTS FOR THE RICH, DRILLING FOR OIL, BEING ANTI-CHOICE, PRO-WAR, ANTI-WOMEN?!!!!!!!!!

And I've never seen so many older Americans at a convention in my life. A new generation has taken the stage for change my fellow Americans, and I am proud to say that Barack Obama is one of them.

It's laughable that this is the party that has put our country @ such peril and risk, and they now say Country First?! Actually, it's not funny, it's very frightening! I hope that these Americans are smarter than that, but if putting a woman on the ticket with such low expectations is getting them so riled up, I do have to wonder...

When are the Repubs going to talk about something that THEY plan to do? All they do is criticize what Obama has planned without giving their own ideas....anybody noticed that or have they put you to sleep already? Very juvenile and baseless. The spin is not working this time for most of the "thinking" public.

Dready1rasta   September 2nd, 2008 11:01 pm ET

Mike R. California- obama has a 10 point lead and growing in most polls, and what's with your "be afraid" comment? Is fear mongering ALL your type can come up with?, pathetic. You sir, are irrelevant living in California which will certainly remain blue this November, so why don't you sit in a corner and quietly play with your littile green plastic army men like a good Repug war/fear monger.

David   September 2nd, 2008 11:01 pm ET

Fred Thompson made a good case for the same man the GOP Stepped over to Elect George W. Bush in 2000. The Party owes him his shot because he was a "Prisioner of War". We never got the real skinny from his living POW's about his torture. The Suffering Fred Thompson Discribed about John F. McCain. He should have died several times over. I saw Fred work that crowd like a final episode of Law & Order. He really brought the drama. Joe Liberman will have to eat outside after January 09. Thank you

This is a very boring convention, where are the young people, all I see is old people. John McCain is too old, let's keep it real, end of story.

ChangeWeCanBelieveIN   September 2nd, 2008 11:00 pm ET

Fred Thompson further proved why Republicans are so out of touch with Americans. After saying Democrats act as if we are in the "Great Depression", someone should remind Fred how many millions of people do not have healthcare as well as jobless and suffering because of high gas prices because of a War that should not have taken place in the first place. This is one of the many reasons why I am voting for Barack Obama for President of the United States. We do not need 4 More Years of this.

francis   September 2nd, 2008 11:00 pm ET

Oh please....Barack has been tested and proved worthy by the millions of people who voted for him in what we called democracy. Apparently John McShame thought by selecting Palin as his running mate he would make history as well...too bad it has backfired and everyone knows. His choice may have made history, but not in the way he intended. Don't hate....Celebrate!!!!!

kg35   September 2nd, 2008 11:00 pm ET

Obama "the most liberal, most inexperienced nominee?" I thought that distinction went to another Illinois statesman with only two years experience in the House before becoming president. Or should we just ignore those little details about Lincoln after the moving tribute they played before Thompson's speech?

Pat M   September 2nd, 2008 10:58 pm ET

1) Fred Thompson hasn't much of a success story to be throwing stones. 2) The History making is being made by John McCain with his choice for VP. Never has there been a VP so lacking in Political Savy, Foreign Relations, National Policy, White House Protocal or Judgement. Let the phone not ring! 3) Re: Democrat controlled congress – no Republican should ever speak to or about accomplishments! Do they think all Americans and the world have been in an eight year comma? And unable to see, hear, and live through the horrors of the Bush Regime? 4) Just like a Republican to change his spots whenever they're the wrong color. Now we have another Pro Lifer before he was an Anti-Abortionist speaking out of both sides of his mouth like a true Republican! When are they going to get it? When are they going to realize we are able to discern between truth and fiction. And we do recognize Flip Floppers and unlike McCain our memories are still in tact! Shame on Fred for trying to swift boat Democrats again! Next -

Fred, as expected, missed some facts. Congress is rated rock-bottom, but the REPUBLICANS have a higher disapproval rating and the same polls that show the low Congressional ratings also show that Americans prefer to have Democrats rather than Republicans in Congress. Do Republicans ever check facts?

Patti Ann Kelly   September 2nd, 2008 10:56 pm ET

This comment goes out to all CNN so called journalists. I have been watching this presidential campaign intensely since the first primaries. As far as I am concerned unbiased journalism has died in America. I used to highly respect CNN. After the many months of undermining Hlllary Clinton, never ever vetting Obama, and now attacking Sarah Palin on issues that have nothing to do with her role as VP. Going after her daughter and her family in the past few days, has been the lowest of the low. It is sime. Worse than the National Inquirer. Why don't you all just wear Obama buttons and have subheadings: Obama supporter. Throughout this entire process you have been so unbeieveable biased towards annointing Obama, it is just disgraceful. Your group of pundits have not a shred of integrity.
How dare you break a woman who has actually done something.
CNN and MSNBC cannot call themselves journalists. I used to feel sorry for people living in Communist countries that had to listen to propaganda and one biased view point.
Get a grip.. get professional. Where is true unbiased , honest journalism with integrity? You should all be ashamed of yourselves, and what is even worse is the role model you have for your children.
NO longer a viewer of CNN

This has been one of the most electrofying elections in history. I am an X Republican.... Why the change 1. We keep saying Oboma has no experience yet he shows up at any one place or country and hundred of thousands people flock just to glymps him. With a love like that who do we have to compete. Our lack af love and biased behavior, people dont trust us any more. 2. The dicision to elect the gov. of Alaska last munite shows lack of judgement. What weill she do on day one or when the 3am call comes in god fordid he dies. Sorry I cant come to the phone I am breast feeding my baby !!!!! Noble but dangerous for the country!!!!!!!!!

Matt   September 2nd, 2008 10:56 pm ET

Obama inexperienced ? Compared to who ? And what counts as "experience" ? Bush was governor and history will count him as one of the biggest failures. And then there is John McCain. Experience of little accomplishment in the Senate for decades and an ardent supporter of Bush.

Plus, McCain's POW experience is tauted as some character strength. He was shot down while on a mission, as numerous air men were and he was put into a situation where he survived, as many have done. So nothing special.

What this country needs, the republicans do not understand, is a President who does NOT have the Washington insider experience. A President that will be a President for the 21st century. This is something that McCain and the Republican Party can not provide.

Finally, the difference between the Democrats and the Republicans is simple. The Republicans elect a President to serve their narrow range of interests, while the democrats elect a President who serves the American people.

Tracey   September 2nd, 2008 10:56 pm ET

Laura Bush stated on 09/01/08 that Palin’s experience as a mayor, qualified her for the Republican vice presidency.

Cindy McCain stated Sunday, 8/31/08 Palin had national security experience because Alaska was next to Russia.

QUESTIONS TO ALL THE MOTHER'S OF AMERICA'S CHILDREN

Are you willing to take a chance that the welfare and safety of your own children, may at sometime in the future be the responsibility of the Republican party that actually believes that anyone, male or female, with experience as a city council member and the mayor of a village of 9.000 for 8 of her 10 years of “executive” experience, actually qualifies the candidate for the top office in the land?

The same Republican party believes that the fact that the state, which has a total population of less than the city of Atlanta, and which she is the current governor of for all of 20 months, during which time she has already managed to create a cloud of suspicion for possibly abusing the power of her office. and is currently being investigated, is actually qualified for national security because the state she is the governor of is next to Russia?

No matter how you feel about the Democratic ticket at least the one with the lesser experience was ELECTED, and made a VP selection of someone who would bring balance to the ticket and provides some responsibility. The Republican VP was SELECTED by one man that actually believes the Republican statements and beliefs as outlined above.

You parents out there need to think long and hard about this ticket but more importantly about the Republican party which is apparently so welling to cater to the Far Right that the entire Republican party is willing to chance putting your own kids future in jeopardy, just so they can win an election?

How exactly is that considered "Country First"?

Can anybody agree on when life begins? I'm glad Obama responded in the way that he did. He admitted that he was not God and didn't have the power to tell someone what they should do with their own body and their own life. If God gives us free will, who is the government to take that away?

brenda s dickey   September 2nd, 2008 10:55 pm ET

Fred Thompson is an ACTOR...read my text. You can tell he is a good Actor too! I find it laughable that he was commenting on Democrats raising taxes on businesses and basically you will be able to feel the crunch when you go to the store, etc. LOOK around people, since George Bush has been in office our food and gas prices have trippled, hello???????? All you have to do is watch the news one nite to see how bad our economy is due to Republicans being in office for the last 8 years. As far as Sarah Palin goes, well if you say it enough it becomes believable, it is sort of like a slow mind control issue.
Wake up people, don't let yourself become slowly manipulated.

BAMBI SUPPORTERS YOU ARE ALL "ABOVE YOUR PAY GRADE.

Lyndon   September 2nd, 2008 10:54 pm ET

By the way, did you know that McCain was a POW?

Thanks but no thanks, Republican party. You've spent the last 8 years putting the country's economy, foreign policy, world standing, energy dependence, housing situation, health care policy, social security, education system and overall condition into the collective toilet. I've had enough of a President that has made a mockery and sham out of the pillars of the constitution that this country was built on.

I have had enough of this. I have had enough of the Republican party. I simply cannot sit here and listen to another talking mouthpiece talk about how they have kept us safe and secure over the past 8 years, when the exact opposite has shown true. I've had enough of an administration that has declared war on the scientific research and progress that can potentially save millions of lives in the future. I've had enough of a platform that has tried its best to set back the cause of women's rights several decades. And I've had enough of an administration that has pitted Americans from all walks of life against one another by turning the conversation from the American people to wedge issues like abortion and gay rights. The historical walls that have been torn down over time have been slowly rebuilt, brick by brick by the hateful ignorance of the GOP.

We live in the United States of America. Please tell me that we are better than the issues that Republicans have decided to pin their hopes on and that we can focus on the only thing that should matter: fixing the problems and improving the issues that can bring about change and hope into the everyday lives of ordinary Americans such as myself.

Please. We can't afford four more years of wedge/fear/hate/division in our country. Vote for a reason. Vote for a cause that goes beyond catchphrases and slogans. Vote for intelligence, collaboration and peace.

Does anyone have to tell the truth anymore?
The first lie.
Abraham Lincoln was the least expereinced president and one of the greatest.

Abraham Lincoln server 1 term (2 years) in the US House and four terms (8 years) in the Illinois House of Representatives for a total of 10 years of elective office.

Yet the same, tired argument the Republicans have been making since Obama won the primary season. They'll try to try a little bit harder than this.

AA   September 2nd, 2008 10:54 pm ET

And also let's be clear about the whole human rights thing...

That is a smokescreen. As is the inexperience argument. As is the whole we've been safe since argument. As is the illegal immigration.

Your life has been made worse by the Republicans. Your children are not at home and are dying because the Republicans lied to you. Your neighbors have lost their jobs. We are 10 trillion dollars in debt.

Wake up now.

Peace.

for the rep. base, thompson gave a good speech. but i find the tone of the rnc much different than that of the dnc. the rnc seems to be mostly about war, and the military, and religion. the dnc seemed to focus on the economy, energy, and health care. i guess voters will decide which issues are more important to them.

i find it very interesting that joe lieberman is on stage right now...how can he support john mccain and still call himself a democrat? the values of the rnc are very different than the dnc.

"""Thompson said that “we need a President who doesn't think that the protection of the unborn or a newly born baby is above his pay grade.” That’s a dig at the recent Obama statement at the recent faith forum, when Rick Warren asked when life begins – he responded that it was above his pay grade."""

Is not what Obama said. It is above his pay grade to know when life acually begins, nothing about not protecting a baby...Everyone has his or her own opinion about when life begins and should not be in politics.....Get your facts straight...This is how the Conservatives work and spread the word, with lies and distorted statements....

""Democrats present a history making nominee for president," Thompson told the cheering crowd. "History making in that he is the most liberal, most inexperienced nominee to ever run for president."

This is why I do not like this statement. Instead of acknowledging the history, he chooses to take a jab for political reasons.

And Liberman says:

There is no room for eloquence with a presidential candidate? Then mentions what clinton did AFTER he won the presidency. lol

Larry B.   September 2nd, 2008 10:51 pm ET

Apparently, I have thought about the issues of what people will do in their prospective positions. I know Obama and McCain are about even in their abilities to lead, and as far as foreign politics – they are both untried, but capable. Both men are smart ....

My concern lies more with the back up and what they can do. I see Biden as being able to devote all his time to the office... however – I really don't like to pick on women, but this woman left herself open in her speech.

Where will Palin be when she has the new grandchild? Overseas? In the Air? On the Road? It is her responsibility to support the president, how is she planning to take care of family and also be able to perform the duties of the position?

She has claimed that her whole family would be there for the daughter and her new baby. Where will she be when the baby comes if she is VP?

How about the down syndrome infant Palin has? As a special needs teacher, I know that is a huge responsibility as a mother and father. Will Palin leave the children to the father, and do her duties or will she be there for her children and forego some of the traveling duties of the VP?

I think it is well due to have a female in the white house – either as President or Vice.. but I had a much more mature vision of a woman who did not have to divide her responsibilities of motherhood with her position to support the President. Most women I thought might make it had children of older years, adult children. I wonder if Palin will fall apart or make it.

I think she is not ready for the political race of Washington. Too bad, we could have a great opportunity for a female in the white house.

Sarah   September 2nd, 2008 10:50 pm ET

Americans are in the most part smarter than that. Obama is nothing more than a bag of hot air. He is great at reading speeches (that a speech writer wrote). when talking on his own, he can't even think what to say. He really says some stupid things when it isn't written down for him

As I listen to the biography and praise by various people at the RNC about John McCain, one thing comes to mind. Why did the GOP NOT feel this way about John McCain in 2000 when Rove began his rise to power? I would vote for McCain 2000 but I cannot vote for McCain 2008 who is aligned with the Corporations and lobbyists that got Bush elected over a better candidate in 2000. Now the party has no credibility. The presidency does not need a war hero as much as it needs someone that is smart, has good judgement and can inspire a country. The USA has not seen that in 8 years. God Bless America!!!

Jimmy   September 2nd, 2008 10:49 pm ET

I want everyone to do exactly what Spike Lee said to do. Look at the difference!!! The Democratic convention was very diverse. The Republic convention was a sea of white faces. It just goes to show the racial division in the two parties. One party promotes the melting pot that is supposed to be America, the other party promotes the same good ole boy politics that has corrupted America from the inside and has caused hate and distrust around the world.

Jennifer   September 2nd, 2008 10:49 pm ET

George W Bush had executive experience as governor of a large and populous state and look where that got us. It's JUDGEMENT not experience that makes him ready to lead and thats why millions of Americans voted for him.

Thompson is a hypocrite now pandering to pro-life when he himself is pro choice. ENOUGH with the spin! ENOUGH!!!

LaVelle Jones   September 2nd, 2008 10:49 pm ET

Fred Thompson further proved why Republicans are so out of touch with Americans. After saying Democrats act as if we are in the "Great Depression", someone should remind Fred how many millions of people do not have healthcare as well as jobless and suffering because of high gas prices because of a War that should not have taken place in the first place. Because of a War that has turned our America into a Great Depression and to joke about this and have so little feelings for those millions of people, including me, who are stuggling to make it everyday is one of the many reasons why I am voting for Barack Obama for President of the United States. We do not need 4 More Years of this.

fixthebroken   September 2nd, 2008 10:49 pm ET

How sad. Thompson said it was up to the woman and not the government back in the 90s. Now all of a sudden the woman should have no choice and the government should dictate for her.

I thought Republicans liked limited government - Ron Paul is at least consistent there.

And another thing, I find it so funny how the Republicans can turn Obama's "above my pay grade" answer into a negative. It is above his pay grade. Only God (if you believe) can really know whether it is right or wrong. Or at the very least, only the woman who has to make the choice can really know. But, of course, since the Republicans own morality in this country, they say life begins at conception and that is that. They know that because there is no one above them on the "pay scale", not even God.

GALib   September 2nd, 2008 10:49 pm ET

Why do most of the speakers seem strained? It doesn't sound fluid. It doesn't have the feelings of people who are excited to move the country forward. They sound defensive and bitter. I am not uplifted, I am left feeling saddened that this is the alternative if the dems lose. It will be God Help America, not God Bless America.

People keep talking about Palin's exectutive experience. She governed the 3rd from last smallest state for 1.5 years while Obama was running a National campaign for the same amount of time. Obama was well received by foreign leaders all over the world while Palin has never met with any other country's leader.

Obama was a United States Constitutional professor, does Palin even know the Constitution?
Obama is a Harvard graduate and first black person to be president of the Harvard Law Review (leadership). Palin graduated from a small college with a degree in journalism and worked as a sports reporter.

Obama worked as a community organizer right out of college and helped organize much needed help for the less needy. Palin owned a small fishing store in Alaska. On and on and on.

Obama has excellent experience, was President of Harvard Law Review, chose to be a community organizer over going to Wall Street, and was a Constitutional professor before he ever even ran for state senate. God knows this country needs someone who understands the constitution. The experience argument against Obama is getting very old. He has tons of experience, just not in Washington. He definately has more relevant experience than Palin.

Wow, I couldn't watch the DNC without a Republican critizing, commenting, and providing their opinion of what the Democrats had to accomplish during their convention!!! Why aren't the Democrats being allowed the same publicity during the RNC?!?!? How much more biased can the media be?

Thompson faced criticism during his own presidential run when a YouTube clip of a 1994 Senate debate showed Thompson declaring, "The ultimate decision on abortion should be left with the woman and not the government."

It was also revealed Thompson once lobbied for an abortion-rights group.

Republicans are the party of old rich men in their suits. It is really scary to even look at that crowd.
The only one worse one than all those old corrupt republicans is Judas Liberman. The Opportunistic lying two timer, he cost Al Gore the election because he was a liability more than a help to him. I wish he will stop saying he is a Democrat he doesn't deserve this title.....Liar Scum

Enough with this experience crap. Sarah Palin is unprepared to be Vice President. Talk about something else.

Tony in Oregon   September 2nd, 2008 10:47 pm ET

America is looking for a President with sound judgment and the ability to lead. So far Senator Obama has shown us through his actions he possess both traits. That makes him well prepared to be President.

On the other hand, the first important decision towards the Presidency by Senator McCain was the selection of Palin. What a huge mistake and it calls into question his ability to make sound decisions and think matters through before acting (instead it looks like he reacted to the positive outcome of the Democratic Convention and the embracing of Senator Obama even by those 18 million who voted for Hillary).

KG   September 2nd, 2008 10:47 pm ET

What we need is a President who is willing to take a stand. At least Sen McCain has cast votes on the issues. What did we get from Sen Obama when his turn came to vote on the issues at hand? We got "present" something like 70% of the time. "Present." What the heck is that? Does Obama have no backbone to take a stand? Does he not care to educate himself on an issue in order to cast an educated vote? "Present." We do not need "present" in the White House. We need governance and action. We need someone who is willing to take a stand. That's what we get with Sen McCain. With Sen Obama, we get "present."

Kerry Chapman   September 2nd, 2008 10:47 pm ET

Well, Fred did outstanding. At least we did not have that Jesus Christ Superstar Halo as we did in the Democratic Convention, or like the Woodstock Convention in Denveer. As a Democrat now a Independent. The Republican Party is substance. Not remake of
Jesus Christ Superstar or Woodstock as the Democrats did in Denver.

Matt   September 2nd, 2008 10:47 pm ET

Thompson's speech had plenty of rethoric tonight, but that's what conventions are all about – just watch the replay of the DNC last week if you aren't sure. Either way, Thompson's points were accurate. And it's very interesting that CNN would have Donna Brazile providing commentary on the speeches. Wolf might as well turn the microphone over to Obama's top media strategist to weave through the myriad of key messaging prepared prior to the event. CNN, please consider turning to objective analysts, we already know what Obama's group thinks about these speeches. Thank you!

Washington for Obama   September 2nd, 2008 10:46 pm ET

Mindy Baker   September 2nd, 2008 10:46 pm ET

Personally, I like to think that I would never get an abortion. However, when my sister was pregnant and found out that she has cervical cancer, it made me think. There are boundaries that are just too complex to draw, such as the mother's health, rape and incest. If Roe Vs Wade is overturned, I will be devastated.

Lily   September 2nd, 2008 10:46 pm ET

Is there anyone at this convention under the age of 60 that isn't related to Palin? Anyone? ANYONE?

THE TRUTH   September 2nd, 2008 10:46 pm ET

Thompson and friends, when you start talking, check your videos.

BOSTON FOR OBAMA/BIDEN 08   September 2nd, 2008 10:46 pm ET

Fred Thompson is a loser. He couldn't convince republicans to put him on the ticket. Sour grapes

Pam   September 2nd, 2008 10:46 pm ET

Gee Fred, aren't you just the two faced old wind bag we always knew you to be! Hmmm, yes I remember 1994. Sit down you old fart. Heaven forbid you keel over. I'd sooner give up my nursing license before I'd ever give CPR to you!

Republicans we don't fear you and your unwatched convention. We're coming to get you and take back the White House! 8 years of inept leadership is enough. We don't need poor judgement from the likes of McCain or Barbie Palin.

For everyone of you, there are hundreds of us.
GAME ON!

Shelly from San Pedro   September 2nd, 2008 10:46 pm ET

This looks more like an AARP convention. And Fred Thompson??? Well the inexperienced guy ran a better campaign than he did. People VOTED for Obama.

Where is Rudy "9/11, 9/11" G??

JB   September 2nd, 2008 10:46 pm ET

Donna B. is a joke – she is not in the booth to offer any objective analysis but rather to slash and cut the second a speaker steps off the dais – in this case Fred Thompson – she is a hack and joke. If the Pelosi/Reid democrats actually had a plan then why haven't they done anything since getting the majority ? The answer is they have been feeding America a line of crap designed by people like Donna and really don't want a better America for all but one that is better for just themselves.
Shame on CN for allowing this to continue – it is wrong.

Obama/Biden 2008 from Nebraska   September 2nd, 2008 10:46 pm ET

That's all Thompson's campaign was....a joke. So he has to try and make everything else one as well.

Barbara   September 2nd, 2008 10:46 pm ET

I don't think no one in American rather Dem or Rep. questions John McCains patrotism, and his service of duty to America, but that doesn't make him Presidental. Just look his first act, and he picks Palin as VP and only met her once. Do we really want another president you acts first without forthought. I DON't. we need a change, not another bush four years.

Erni   September 2nd, 2008 10:46 pm ET

Did he really just say screw the alligators and drain the swamps? Republican environmentalism at its best. Maybe someone should explain to he and "kill the polar bears" Palin what happens when you take an apex predator out of an environment. But that would be science and who needs that?

Hope over Fear 08

Jack Crystal   September 2nd, 2008 10:46 pm ET

Isn't it interesting that Fred Thompson so forcefully criticized Obama for his statement on protection for the unborn, when he declared in 1994 during a Senate debate that he is pro-choice.

I noticed Mr. Thomspons forgot to mention how the debt increased to record levels with the republicans controlling the executive and legislative branches. I guess he forgot that part.

j in w   September 2nd, 2008 10:45 pm ET

with all that detail about mccain's POW experience (i never knew he was a POW before this, by the way), he was wise to skip ahead afterward; going into such gritty detail about his first wife wouldn't have done much for his illustration of john mccain's "character"

Tish,NC   September 2nd, 2008 10:45 pm ET

Who Cares!! Besides no one really voted for him in the primaries! He's an actor!! I saw him do the same thing on an Episode of Law & Order!! These old guys are funny!!!LOL!!

O/B08!!

suv2001   September 2nd, 2008 10:45 pm ET

I honestly do not believe this was a great speech. His delivery was slow and he showed his age. I thought he would have been harder on Obama.

Wayne   September 2nd, 2008 10:45 pm ET

The tribute to John McCain was great and the jabs at Obama were well placed but the question still remains, what will John McCain do to fix the mess the country is in? Just telling me he is a candidate with great character doesn't make me want to vote for him any more. I already know he's a man that risked his life for his country.

nadeem   September 2nd, 2008 10:45 pm ET

Can't play the experience card with Palin on the ticket.

Democrat   September 2nd, 2008 10:45 pm ET

Good rhetoric, nice sound byte but sadly still not focusing on the key issue which divide the voters in this country – the economy!

Ivette   September 2nd, 2008 10:45 pm ET

I have been watching the Republican convention, and the more time that goes by the more offended I become. I am a woman, my father was a Korean War veteran, and I worked for the Department of Defense, including the Navy SEALS, for many years - I was there during the Panama invasion in 1989! However, the Republicans have taken it upon themselves to market service members and fallen heroes as exclusively their own! The way they have portrayed "Service" for the nation during this convention, especially Senator Thompson, blatantly and falsely implies that only Republicans are patriotic and that service members are only Republicans. Shame on the Republican marketing team! The only right thing they have accomplished with this marketing strategy is to alienate those of us who have served our country and have not felt represented by this Republican administration to begin with!!!! Why don't they talk about the real issues??? "It's the economy, stupid!"

Duop from Colorado   September 2nd, 2008 10:45 pm ET

Thompson's speech was like an action-movie.

AA   September 2nd, 2008 10:44 pm ET

This keeps getting funnier.
Fred Thompson?

C'mon seriously. Some of you are actually going to vote for Republicans?

Listen, I have respect for those that deserve it (Thompson is not one of them), but there is a big difference between having respect and choosing people to make decisions on the direction of the country.

Let me remind you 10 trillion times at what voting for these people did
to the country.

Peace.

S. Boatman   September 2nd, 2008 10:44 pm ET

If Only You Could Have Delivered A Speech Like That When You Were Running For President . . . But You Were A Part Of History . . . A History In Which Your Campaign Was So Lame Your Horse Never Got Out Of The Gate!

Happy Smiley   September 2nd, 2008 10:44 pm ET

CNN moderator – regardless of whether you continue to block my comments, my vote will count 100%. Let's see you keep this one.

MAIN TAKE-AWAY FROM RNC: George Bush's speech tonight was truly representative of what the country's focus will be if John McCain is elected president. Our leadership will 'miss the point' for the next 4 years.

gene   September 2nd, 2008 10:44 pm ET

First off... all these repubs making the "above the paygrade comments" are just showing the world that they have no power of comprehention. When someone asks a philisophical question like "when does life begin?"... Obama's answer just meant that only God truly knows. Now.. if the repubs feel that they are godly enough to know the answer to a question which is purely speculative... that's fine. But this mis-interpretation just shows the level of intelligence of the republican party.

And... in mention of the democratically controlled congress.. it's only a tiny advantage for the democrats, and Bush holding the power to veto... which is means that a little over half just isn't enough... and Bush has used that power to Veto quite a few times lately.

Sorin   September 2nd, 2008 10:44 pm ET

I don't know if I would take an actor turned senator turned actor's words seriously. He couldn't seriously win a state during the primaries. why all of the sudden what he says is so important.

I am an independent. I heard Obama's speech, and he said tax cuts for middle to low income families and small business. How Thompson twists his words to get the crowd going. Most top 5% wouldn't know see significant tax increase but those increase would have significant impact for the low income.

I am sick and tired of all the word twisting, and personal attacks I am seeing from the right and to some extent from the left. Can we get back to the politics where most of the americans can benefit from who ever becomes the president, and not just the few who knows someone in or around the white house. Even third world countries have a better election process. We the people need to stand up for our rights and ask the candidates to run on a platform of honesty and relevance and none of the drama.

dingle   September 2nd, 2008 10:44 pm ET

The average age at this convention has to be around 68!

LT for Obama   September 2nd, 2008 10:44 pm ET

Oops, I meant of his own candidate's inadequacies.

brenda   September 2nd, 2008 10:44 pm ET

I really think that Fred Thompson is a great actor. He sure showed it tonight. I can't keep watching though. I am getting sick.....

JT Force   September 2nd, 2008 10:44 pm ET

Why don't you comment on Mr. Thompson pointing out the media bias against Sarah Palin. I would love to see the media go after Obama for all of his shady dealings with an unrepentant terrorist as hard as they go after Sarah Palin's teenage daughter.

Annie R.   September 2nd, 2008 10:44 pm ET

Seriously, the irrelevant Fred (gonna save the day) Thompson? He didn't even get a nod from his party, and he's attacking the Democratic presidential nominee. What is happening to the Republican Party? President Eisenhower would be ashamed to see this spectacle.

Diana   September 2nd, 2008 10:44 pm ET

I have really enjoyed watching both the democratic and republican conventions. I was truly saddened tonight by the biased attacks that were made by the moderators on TV. I would really like to be able to form my own opinions, but it is extremely difficult when the media can not allow Americans to do this. I did not notice this type of pettiness with the democratic convention. Sadly I am going to choose a different network to watch the remainder of this convention.

jack   September 2nd, 2008 10:44 pm ET

Teddy   September 2nd, 2008 10:43 pm ET

Yeah... That's right... Exactly what we need. Another old out of touch white guy who thinks he knows what's best for the world. We should allow him and John to be roommates in the old folks home. I am not racist, but I am sick and tired of this "dominant" misperception.

vote obama   September 2nd, 2008 10:43 pm ET

This is the most boring convention ever!!!! The republicans can not play the experience card anymore(all thanks to john mccain). Sarah is not worthy neither is john mcSame!!! Nice job mcSame you made it easier for the Democrats!!!

LT for Obama   September 2nd, 2008 10:43 pm ET

Much of what Thompson said were prejections of his own inadequacies.

JPM   September 2nd, 2008 10:43 pm ET

Republicans are RESPONSIBLE for the mess of the last 8 years. This election is about DIRECTION. Where do we want the country to go? Stay the course? Or change direction?

denniseC   September 2nd, 2008 10:43 pm ET

Appreciated the pow story, completely compelling. Some parts of his speech was absolutely pathetic. Please! Be a little be more genuine rather then use some of Obama's wording. It's alright, they will be taking swipes at this dude today and tomorrow.

ER P   September 2nd, 2008 10:43 pm ET

Pathetic! Shameless, pedantic sentimentality! No wonder the country and its friends have been in such a sad state for the past 8 years. Please, dear American neighbors, don't do this to yourselves and to your friends and neighbours again.

Fred Thompson ought to go back to Hollyweird.

Texico From Mexico   September 2nd, 2008 10:42 pm ET

Oh please....this race is so over! everyone can see right thorough this Republican facade...my god just look at the convention, it looks like 10 rest homes got together for a seniors dance...they might as well start showing "Golden Girls" up on the screen. Thompson is just another frustrated old man......

Tarrie   September 2nd, 2008 10:42 pm ET

Yawn. Typical boring republican talking points.

Joshua College Station Texas   September 2nd, 2008 10:42 pm ET

His bucket analogy was compelling but wrong. Republicans want to lower taxes to get votes, but they don't want to pay for anything! Let's put it all on credit!

It's sick sick sick!

No Way, No How, No George McCain!   September 2nd, 2008 10:42 pm ET

Since McShame and other repub's always say "Obama will raise your taxes" then I guess they are only talking to people that make over 200,00 a year.

Repubs always seem to forget to tell people that Obama will LOWER taxes for 95% of us.

CB   September 2nd, 2008 10:42 pm ET

Im sorry, Fred who? Oh that guy that didnt amount to much in the Primaries... Tell him to stick to television...

Mike R. California   September 2nd, 2008 10:42 pm ET

All you liberals keep pumping yourselves up and trying to bring people down by reiterating naive statements over and over until you're blue in the face.

Fact: W has extremely low approval rating, economy somewhat teetering, war in Iraq, etc., etc., etc.! Why the heck is Obama not crushing McCain? He should be but he's not.

Be afraid.

Sadly, women’s' activist groups are only activist for liberal minded women. So much for equality you hypocrites (you know who you are).

For the same reason (sadly) many people will go to the polls, in the privacy afforded us as citizens of this GREAT country, and decide they just can't put an African American in office.

Admit to yourselves that it is Obama who made the

HUGE mistake by choosing an old school, run of the mill, pork barrel pushing, Washington Good Ol' Boy insider after he platformed himself on truly changing the way business is done.

Also, remember that it is Obama and McCain who are the potential presidents here, not the VPs. Each of the VP prospects will more than likely serve their terms in relative obscurity like nearly every other VP before them. If the unusual takes place, likely they will have been in Washington and tasking around the globe long enough to be very familiar with what is going on.

It's disgusting to cry and whine all these months about racism and reverse racism and all the ridiculous baloney that happened during the primaries (remember race issues and your dearly beloved Bill Clinton?), and then go on to instantly attack a person you really don't even know yet.

You do it because it caught you and the dem chiefs off guard and you're afraid.

Sarah Palin appears to be a person who has been quite successful at everything she has done in life thus far. You don't want to hear that because you are afraid she is, in fact, that person.

Elen up above takes the cake for stupidity. She puts forth the argument that Sarah is a horrible mother for running for VP because it exposes her pregnant daughter to scrutiny. You're a real thinker, lady!

I'd be willing to bet that each member of her family is overjoyed and proud for Sarah. They know her, you don't.

Dem from AZ   September 2nd, 2008 10:42 pm ET

oooooh....come on Thompson...Put up your dudes..put up your dukes lol. Thompson flip flops like pancakes.

Joe   September 2nd, 2008 10:42 pm ET

Unfortunately, this speech was just rhetoric. We saw in the primaries how many people bought into Fred Thompson's view of leadership. He obviously knows more about how to act like a politician than to be one.

A speech from a celebrity,Wow.So far this is all about military. Is that all that this about.McCains war story is very compelling and that part was good exept for the planted idiot near the michrophone screaming yeah at every sentence.John McCain has been a celebrity ever since he was a POW but was good to hear it from another celebrity.Good thing Freddy mentioned that none of the military experience gives you the right for Presidency. So far this night is mainly about new wars and past wars and nothing about economy or health care.Have to think by the wires tonight Fred will be eating crow on Palin as there is alot of proof coming out about her bullying and taking earmarks.

Jamie -- Asheville, NC   September 2nd, 2008 10:42 pm ET

All the lies put forth by the Republican party are absolutely staggering.

Do they really think they can get away with twisting the truth like they have been doing?

I fear for this country if McCain and Palin are elected.

Alan   September 2nd, 2008 10:40 pm ET

As a former Republican and a 20-year independent who has now watched George Bush and Fred Thompson address the RNC, I have to say.... You're driving me to Barrack.

I applaud McCain's maverick style and his VP selection, but every move you make is geared towards shoring up your neo-con and religious extremist base. If you hate Washington so much, how is it you'll do everything you can to hold on to power there, including sacrificing your most cherished principles?

This convention doesn't convince me that the Republicans have learned anyting in the last 8 years.

Wow   September 2nd, 2008 10:40 pm ET

what a joke this guy was!!! He even blamed the economyon the democrats!! Talking proudly that palin puta eats moose!! About the exotic dancer that has nothing to do with important issues!!

Obama 08   September 2nd, 2008 10:40 pm ET

The people like Fred Thompson who are praising Sarah Palin had probably never met her or knew anything about her until Friday; the people who spoke about Obama knew him and worked with him.

Since they have no platform, no policy and no vision, they have to resort to yet again makingthis electiona referendum on Obama with heavy-handed attacks and cheap potshots.

The least canned sounding speech of the convention, still boring and spin filled, but at least it was a little more entertaining.

Jane with a brain   September 2nd, 2008 10:37 pm ET

A convention for old fools with old ideas that work anymore. No wonder the rest of the world is leaving us behind. McSame does not put his country first. He put "womanizing" first. He could not stop looking at Sara "McPlain" Palin's behind. He is just using us women for his own personal desires. He chooses a second rate beauty queen instead of qualified candidates. Now he wants to give his VP choice a crash course in foreign policy. Wake up America! The rest of the world is laughing at us! Palin is a JOKE to all Americans. By the way I'm a republican. Save the drama and vote Obama

FrankSmith   September 2nd, 2008 10:37 pm ET
