Thompson skewers Obama

Fred Thompson said Barack Obama is unprepared to be president.
Fred Thompson said Barack Obama is unprepared to be president.

ST PAUL (CNN) – Barack Obama is wholly untested and unprepared to be president, former Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson said Tuesday - the most pointed criticisms yet of the Democratic presidential nominee delivered at the scaled-back GOP convention.

"Democrats present a history making nominee for president," Thompson told the cheering crowd. "History making in that he is the most liberal, most inexperienced nominee to ever run for president.

"Apparently they believe that he would match up well with the history making, Democrat controlled Congress," he continued in the prime-time speech. "History making because it's the least accomplished and most unpopular Congress in our nation's history."

Thompson, who abandoned his own presidential bid after poor showings in the first round of primaries early this year, also criticized the Illinois senator for comments at a recent faith forum during which he declined to say when he believed human life began.

"We need a president who doesn't think that the protection of the unborn or a newly born baby is above his pay grade," Thompson said in what was a clear reference to Obama's comments at a forum sponsored by Rick Warren last month.

Thompson faced criticism during his own presidential run when a YouTube clip of a 1994 Senate debate showed Thompson declaring, "The ultimate decision on abortion should be left with the woman and not the government."

It was also revealed Thompson once lobbied for an abortion-rights group.

  1. No Hillary = No Obama

He said what alot of people are thinking and feeling about Obama. There are also alot of people who are not comfortable with either Obama or McCan. Allthough, McCan had his bones broken for this country. All Obama and Biden do is talk, talk, talk. Write-In Hillary.

    Let us face it:

When does life really begin? If your answer is AT the Time of Conception, then I will conclude that:

Jusus Christ had no LIFE before he was born as a man. Obama's answer, "I really do not know, is more humbling than what these idiots are preaching!!!

So he's a hypocrite, as well as a bully ... like many of the Republicans on show. Since they have no platform on which to run, they have to talk only about history.

Since they have no platform, no policy and no vision, they have to resort to yet again makingthis electiona referendum on Obama with heavy-handed attacks and cheap potshots.

Man, I feel like I am watching a convention from the 1960's...Johnny B Good, with tons of white hair dancing around. Are they really not trying to connect with any of the youth vote, much less no connection to any ethnic portion of the US. Seems pretty old news...

  12. Obama 08

The people like Fred Thompson who are praising Sarah Palin had probably never met her or knew anything about her until Friday; the people who spoke about Obama knew him and worked with him.

So much for more Republican talking points and hypocrisy.

As a former Republican and a 20-year independent who has now watched George Bush and Fred Thompson address the RNC, I have to say.... You're driving me to Barrack.

I applaud McCain's maverick style and his VP selection, but every move you make is geared towards shoring up your neo-con and religious extremist base. If you hate Washington so much, how is it you'll do everything you can to hold on to power there, including sacrificing your most cherished principles?

This convention doesn't convince me that the Republicans have learned anyting in the last 8 years.
