The Obama campaign said Gov. Sarah Palin's speech sounded just like Pres. George W. Bush.
The Obama campaign said Gov. Sarah Palin's speech sounded just like Pres. George W. Bush.

(CNN) — Democrats accused Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin of mirroring "divisive" attacks by President Bush Wednesday night and said showed she wasn't qualified to be on the ticket.

"The speech that [Alaska] Gov. Palin made was well delivered, but it was written by George Bush's speechwriter and sounds exactly like the same divisive, partisan attacks we've heard from George Bush for the last eight years," said Bill Burton, the campaign spokesman for Sen. Barack Obama.

"If Gov. Palin and John McCain want to define 'change' as voting with George Bush 90 percent of the time, that's their choice, but we don't think the American people are ready to take a 10 percent chance on change."

In her speech, Palin drew large applause for attacking Obama for writing two memoirs, but no major laws or reforms.

Palin will never be accused of broken promises, of that you can be sure. Because she never said anything about her plans for the economy. I don't know what other people think they heard, but I heard, but I heard nothing. Palin and the rest of the republican party are going to need those hunting rifles to get votes.

Interested Observer   September 4th, 2008 9:50 am ET

I have been a long time interested observer of our American political system. I am often amazed at the brazen, irrelevant, innane pronouncements made in the course of campaigns, and at how many of them are patently false and easily proven to be so.

It seems that the republican wordsmiths are the clear masters of this black art, and the success of their candidates clearly justifies perpetuation of the practice.

I believe that, in large measure, the republicans have met with success because they are shameless in their delivery of verbal stink bombs. Perhaps they believe that by saying something enough times and conjuring up a sufficient sense of outrage in the delivery will make it true. The latest example of this is seen in the party line concerning the qualifications of the vastly underqualified Sarah Palin.

Lets really look at the experience comparison:

Obama:
B.A in political science from Columbia University, with a specialization in international relations
J.D. in Law from Hardvard, graduated magna cum laude; President of the Harvard Law Review
12 years (92-04) teaching constitutional law
7 years State Senator: sponsored more than 800 bills
4 years Senator for Illinos, a state with 12.8 million people
Palin:
Bachelor's in journalism from University of Idaho
4 years Wasilla City Council (8000 people)
6 years Wasilla mayor (8000 people)
1 year "Ethics Commissioner of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission"
20 months governor of a state with 660,000 people

Do the Republicans really think we're so stupid that we would believe Palin is more experienced than Obama? Give me a break…

M. Townsend   September 4th, 2008 9:49 am ET

This sarcasm would help when she finds herself next to Putin or Olmert or Merkel given 72 year old McCains health. At least we know Obama's world view, opinion on Iraq wince 2003 when he informed us it was the wrong war and to finish the war in Afganistan and caputre Osama, and we have seen him stand toe-to-toe with those leaders. Being an attack dog, great speech reader will not help in those real life situations. Country First!

Luis,

The only fear being mention is the Fear mongering tactics of your republican party. They used it in 04 and are trying to use it again. I have a question for you, Do you know what Palin's policies are about fixing this economy your great Commander in Cheif left us in, What about Health Care or College, all she did was attack and use weak one liners that you probably thought was funny, YOU REPUBLICANS DON'T GET IT your 8 years in control of this counrty put us in this mess yet you think another 4 or 8 will change it. Einstein once said "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." You republicans make me sick, instead of putting some kind of substance all you know how to do is attack, but thats ok when the dabetes start we'll see who's going to be left with their tales between their legs, good luck on the rest of the election because for the next 8 years you're going to see how a country should be run. Sadly for you it's not going to be one of your beloved republicans who have no plans exept wars and deficits will hopefully one day stop taking money from these lobbyist and think about the country before their wallets.

I for one support women keeping up with the big boys and i look for integrity and substance in a person. The RNC attach dogs last night was very tasteless and the mockery was horrible. I give Huckabee the most respect for not stooping as low as his counterparts. Yet still i didnt hear anything on the issues all i hears was the same divisive speeches that has torn Washington apart and not take care of the issues that we the American people care about. SAD SAD SAD.

If Sarah Palin wants help from the government for her special needs child she better vote for Obama. The republicans don't care about a child after the child is born.

I`m an old line moderate Republican and I cannot accept this " new branch of the party ( Neo-Cons). They are leading this country down the wrong path both fiscally and idiologically.——— Sadly, I`m just waiting to see the old " It`s the Economy, Stupid" bumper stickers appear again !!!!!

Sarah Palin is AWESOME! She should be running for President!

DJ in TX   September 4th, 2008 9:49 am ET

As a Democrat, I watched the speech. While I'll admit it was what she needed to do for the base, it still answer any questions for me. She talked about Obama's "lack" of plan, but she didn't lay out the Republican plan or any parts of it. I only heard the economy addressed one time and that was when she talked about energy. But even that was in the context of what Alaska has done to help. She talked about taxes in the same way that all Republicans talk about taxes, and that is to try to paint Obama as a tax and spend.

President Bush has grown the government more than any other president in history (Democrat or Republican), but yet Republicans still talk about small government. In my opion, this speech, while it shows Gov Palin's grit, showed me the same stuff that Republicans accuse Obama of – style, but no substance. Again, for the base, she did her job.

Now she has to face the media (which BTW she's not given one interview since the announcement). Hopefully the media will ask the real questions, not about the daughter, that's their issue, not mine. I want to hear her answer questions on Pakistan, Iraq, Afghanistan (which was not mentioned in her speech). I want to hear her answers on foreign policy. I also want to know her views on creationism or evolution. I want to know whether she supported the bridge to nowhere before she was against it. I really want to know whether she used her office to try and get somebody fired (ethics). Those are legitimate questions and has nothing to do with smears. Its not questioning her qualifications, but rather her knowledge and judgement (the same things Republicans accuse Obama of lacking).

The jury is out, let's wait and see. BTW – the speech had a lot of inaccuracies.

Ledia   September 4th, 2008 9:48 am ET

THere are only 2 words heard during the DNC: 9 and 11. No substance, no real issues. I still have no idea what they want to do with this country other than go to war. THey want to spread more fear. Some will buy into it, most of us won't this time.

McCain/Palin– thanks but not thanks.

No to 4 more Bush/McCain years!

Kip4real   September 4th, 2008 9:48 am ET

How ironical, that a mere Gov. who's spent time manipulating her position and abusing power want to compare herself with a Stand up Harvard Mogul gone Senator? He was head of Law Review in Harvard – that is not actual responsibilities? He is the Senator – I guess that is tough for Sarah to comprehend, that it has a defined JOB DESCRIPTION. He woulda sought a Great Post after Harvard, but he CHOSE to work with the Average American, while Palin is busy trying to Exploit the polar bears, with a mere Bachelors Degree??

Jane McCulloch   September 4th, 2008 9:48 am ET

I am English and have been following the Election on CNN with huge interest. Congratulations on your terrific coverage.
However I am bewildered by the discussion on the difference in 'expertise' between Governor Palin and Obama. Recently we, in England and Europe, watched in admiration Barack Obama's recent foreign tour, where he met the heads of government in the EU and many other countries – and was received and accepted as a wise and clever statesman – and an egual. He has talked to many members of the G 8 and has visited many of the countries that have trouble spots in the rest of the world. The only comment from the Republicans was that this was a celebrity cult.
It seems a knowledge of foreign policy is not a priority or qualification for the Republicans – but to me the fact that Obama has met and been accepted by so many other world leaders, does give him a great advantage in the experience stakes and equips him far better for President – with all the world problems – than Governor Palin – who seems to have met no foreign leaders and has no experience of that sort at all..
I would find that it very alarming – with her total lack of contact with any leaders outside America – if she were suddenly to find herself taking over the Presidency.

T Reality   September 4th, 2008 9:48 am ET

Its great the Repbulicans are giving the Clintons such great material for their part in the campaign. eg Its the Economy Stupid.

Love the attack on community organisers whom are generally volunteers. Guess might be a few less in McCain Palin campaign offices.

Lies re Taxes. Easy to refute too. At what income level do the McCain tax cuts come in and how do you qualify for them.

Yes Obama is going to raise taxes if you are a Corporation or Wealthy.

How is Obama going to pay for most of his promises. Stopping the economic vandalism of the War in Iraq

Leo   September 4th, 2008 9:48 am ET

Palin's speech was very well executed; it will set up McCain to give a unifying speech and make him look Obama-esque.
Mock Obama's rhetoric all you want, but don't turn around and get McCain doing his own, less-poetical version.
If you're going to be straight talk – be straight talk.
Either look at your cake or eat it.

It's one thing to deride charisma, but to do it in such a way to affirm your own lack of charm is petty and pathetic.

Politics of old "

Talk about politics of old, didnt the DNC drag out Carter? If Obama has been trying to fix the issues, why does he no-vote in the Senate? He has not tried to fix anything.

The media is so biased it is getting mnore and more blatanbt with each election and almost on a daily basis. Here in Nevada, all local channels pre-empted programming to run the Democratic convention for all 4 days. Not one did this dor the Republican convention. WE can only watch it on cable….CNN or FOX. This morning on the local news channel, they even did a story trying to blast a recent McCain commercial. Unbelieveable. Journalism is not journalism these days. It is a public forum used to manipulate an individuals views…

I will say one thing for Palin, she had a good speech writer.
Other than that she didn't impress me, she is certainly no Hillary
Clinton. I don't want to hear about her soccer mom days or her
PTA experience. And by the way she DID vote for the bridge to nowhere.Look at her 17 year old daughter and compare to Chelsey
Clinton. There is no comparison.

Sue in MI   September 4th, 2008 9:47 am ET

Palin "hit a nerve" because she was so sarcastic and so "cute." The woman has major problems in her family, in her governing style, in her lying, her pastor-it goes on and on. And we're supposed to "fall in love" with the new "rock star." Sorry, there is little about her to love.Maybe republicans like the pit bull style…I found it nauseating.
The difference between her speech and Biden's was that he was stating facts about the current administration and McCain's ties to it. She was going off on the half-truths and outright lies that the McCain campaign has been using for months. (Can someone in the campaign please "FACT CHECK" before you write a speech?) Had she gone out and told what THEY intend to do, and been positive, she may have been likable. There was absolutely no attempt to win over anyone not already Republican. That is why this Hillary Dem will stay with the party with a plan…and stay away from the evangelical pit bulls.

Sabreen60   September 4th, 2008 9:47 am ET

May I add one other thing. It is a bold face lie to say Obama has not sponsored any legislation in both the state and US senates. I suggest you go to the web sites for IL State Senate and the US senate and research. Of course, you can go straight to the Obama site, but I guess the negative republicans wouldn't believe it if it's on his site.

Eddie   September 4th, 2008 9:47 am ET

For Eight years McCain voted with Bush and the country went down the drain . We got poorer and they spent Billions on war and big

gas pumps.

FL4Obama   September 4th, 2008 9:47 am ET

How can the McCain campaign falsely throw around the "arrogant" label? Last night was the epitome of arrogance, exasperating their hypocrisy.

Obama and Biden talk about bringing the country together: Independents, Republicans, and Democrats alike.

Eight is enough of this Bush/Rove-style division.

Boy. That sure was a lot of hate last night!
Unfortunately, Karl Rove has hijacked the republican brand and turned them into hate filled people. Is this what we want for America?

If she had actually attacked Democrat policy, that would have been one thing, but she chose to attack the person and as an Obama Devotee, I'm a little taken back by the tone of her attacks. I felt like I was listening to Karl Rove, Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh last night.

Great speech though!

Heidi   September 4th, 2008 9:47 am ET

As a 35 year old female I am extremely offended by Sarah Palin. She has done absolutely nothing for womens rights. For example, the right to choose, paid maternity leave like every advanced nation in the world, equal pay, health care for single moms and families. What has she done? She intends instead to throw us back into the stone age where the Republican Party has kept us for the past 7 1/2 years.

If you're a female and think she's your choice, be aware, be very aware. Your tax paying dollars will be paying for the full time care of her children and grandchildren. Meanwhile you'll still have to work and take of your own kids full time with no tax paying or government help.

Jay   September 4th, 2008 9:47 am ET

Same message, new messenger. The only problem Palin will encounter is that by lying about her own record and Obama's while ripping everything from community organizing, the environment, big cities and the media, her dishonesty has left her WIDE open for a hammer job. That wasn't a speech – it was a hateful rant. Nothing whatsoever of substance, nothing regarding what she would actually do, and nothing about why she's worth our votes. Basically, it was pathetic, and this is from a registered Independent with no party affiliation whatsoever.

Aren't we all tired of this? Contrast this hubris with last week's message of unity, positivity and hope and I think we will see where America's mind really is come November. Disgusting display.

nerakami   September 4th, 2008 9:47 am ET

I have one thing to say, the GOP convention showed itself as an exclusive, separatist organization. There was not one thing reflective of the diverse cultures in this country. It was like America walking backwards…

For many hard-working, weary Americans, their image and speeches shut out millions of us who do not look or sound like them. They do not represent me.

American Patriot   September 4th, 2008 9:47 am ET

Palin gave a great speech. Nothing of substance, but she looked great. Definately the candidate I'd most like to date. Will she ever be forced to answer any of the following questions:

1. Ms. Reformer: why did you hire a lobbyist to get pork for your town if you're against pork?

2. Why were you for the Bridge to Nowhere before you were against it?

3. Will Alaska give back all the pork it's received under your watch?

4.

Sarah will stumble when the tele prompters are turned off…and the speech writers are no where to be found.

Sarah has a 4yr degree from 20 yrs ago just as myself however the Obama/Biden campaign will chew her to pieces when she has to speak about other countries, world leaders, terriorists and she will need the help of all her children just to identify the 50 states on the map.

As an unaffiliated voter, I'll just say that I found her speech quite unsettling. I wanted to be made comfortable with this unknown quantity, and instead she came off as divisive and hateful. I realize that appeals to the party's base, but it wasn't a good first impression.

JDC // Ohio   September 4th, 2008 9:45 am ET

I was so outraged by Rudy 9/11's attack on Obama last night that I didn't watch the rest of the speeches. Sounds like I missed more of the same. I was afraid Sarah Palin might actually have some good ideas about healthcare, education, the economy and the mortgage crises. Come to find out she talked about lipstick. One giant step backwards for women everywhere.

Here's the GOP solution:

Healthcare . . "that's what emergency rooms are for . . "

education . . . "more private and charter schools . . let the public school system fail because we don't need it . ."

Higher education . ." as long as our kids can go to college, who cares about your kids"

war in Iraq . . ."as long as our kids don't have to go there to fight, who cares about your sons and daughters who join the military to try to get access to higher education"

Chris, former Republican   September 4th, 2008 9:45 am ET

And to constantly refer to Barack as Hussein? If you're constantly trying to make that reference, then enough said. And for her to say troops going to Iraq was a task from God? Give me a break. Ask actual troops how they felt it was a task from God? And as for being pro-life? So it's so bad for a woman's right to choose? But yet it's so okay to have killed many innocents overseas and only get a slap on the wrist? I'm sure a pregnant woman was probably killed over there at some point. But that's right, they're not American, so it's still okay. But yet, liberals are the ones that need to open their eyes, okay…

It is quite clear that the republicans have no plans to change america for the better. All they have done at their conventions so far is talk bad about Obama and make community organizer sound like a dirty word. It's time to talk about the issues. If you don't have a plan then you attack seems to be the motto. I'm supporting Obama/Biden at least they have a plan.

Let's see……the Dimocratic Nominee feels he needs to attack the Republican choice for VP. Sounds like there are a couple of issues here:

Obama continues the sexist treatment he lavished on Billary, because he feared her and now fears Palin.

The "experience" argument is one he cannot win. The Liberal media and his surrogates will spin it, but bottom line. Obama is an empty suit.

Nice choice DNC, nice choice

AMEN! I found her speech, though flawlessly delivered, to be nothing more than the politics of hate which have ruled Washington for years. Palin is a sharp-tongued attack dog. She told us little about herself.

If this sarcastic hatred is what Palin has to offer the country, let's all vote for Obama-Biden.

The irony in all of this is that this type of hate is just what McCain used to protest against….

I keep hearing all the complaining about Palin making fun of Obama being a community organizer. Well, he brought it up as "experience" as well has him taking jabs at Palin being a mayor from a small town. Why is it ok for him to take shots at her but not ok for her to take shots at him. Why are they so aftaid of Palin? Is it because she has been a Govenor and a Mayor. If she is nothing why to the dems act as she is such a threat. No matter who is elected president it will be "change." Obama is a ultra-liberal (voting record) and McCain is more of a liberal republician than a conservaitve. Either way its change. Speaking of VP's, if Biden is so great how come he has utterly failed when running for President. If McCain failed because he didnt pick Liberman and he is so great, why didnt Obama pick him?

She told the truth and we – as a nation – should be informed. Like she said – change could be good and it could be bad. At the end of the day we do not live in a world of rainbows and butterflies. We might not like to face reality – but I want someone in the office that does. Neither side has put their cards on the table on all of their stances but it sad that the Dems underestimated McCain and his approach. Change? Look at Obama's VP. Enough said.

Dems supported Hilliary – who wasn't strong enough to make her way to the front line…or even as a viable candidate for VP. Michelle Obama should continue to make appearances on 'The View' and talk about clothing while Sarah goes to work to make a difference in this country. Funny how people – especially the liberals – try to keep a good woman down. Go Girl Go…

I love how all the Dems attack her for being a bad mom. It's so hypocritical. From the group that brought us women's lib and "pro-choice" she is attacked for being a bad mom because she has a family, did not have an abortion for her son with Down's, and appears willing to help parent her grandchild.

To me this seems the highest support of pro-choice and women's lib. She has a family, works to support it and serves her country. Guess the Dems seem to be arguing more for her to stay at home and not had kids.

Luis:

You need to condemn the Republican attacks on Obama which are far more frequent, and many being outright lies. (like Obama being a Muslim, or not seeing the troops because there would be no cameras present)

What kind of VP will Palin make if she's afraid to take questions from the press? After 8 years of Bush's failed leadership and already leading this country into oblivion with a lie based war in Iraq, failure to find Bin Laden, and a 9 trillion dollar debt, clearly you're the one that doesn't get it. A vote for McCain who followed Bush most of the time is a vote for further decline of your nation.

Sarah Palin is the kind of hockey mom that the rest of us dread…her type has given parents a bad name in minor sport. She fits the mold perfectly…do and say anything to win.. while being critical, denigrating, sarcastic and mean spirited toward the opposing team. No thanks!

zg   September 4th, 2008 9:41 am ET

I am amazed that the vice president for the GOP in the year 2008 had no proplem giving such devisive and sarcastic speech when people had to endure 8 years of their failed policies. Each time an election season comes around, they never fail, it is either fear taticts or some other insignificant thing that they come up with. i am trusting that we has a nation of sensible people see beyond what they are trying to do. I am a struggling working woman, working two to three jobs to make ends meet. I have kids to send to college, mortgage to pay, bills to pay and and I am getting older every day from being overworked and stressed out. I need a change from the old politics and tricks of this regime. Eight years is enough people. I am willing to take a chance for something new. I voted for Hilliary, I am willing to give Obama/Biden a chance. I think it is simple, if something is broken, it needs to be fixed.

Sabreen60   September 4th, 2008 9:41 am ET

Palin said that special needs children will have an advocate in the White House. Why did she cut her state budget by 62% for special needs children?

Grant   September 4th, 2008 9:41 am ET

I loved how the extreme right calls the Dems and the media sexist when there are Republicans all over the convention wearing buttons with slogans such as "Hoosiers for the Hot Chick" or "I am voting for the Hot Chick". Realyy I have never seen such a double standard party as the Republicans. And to think I was a moderate Republican who had never voted for a Democrat for President…that is up until we invaded a country who posed no real threat to the USA. There was no mention of Healthcare last night or Bush. The Republicans are a lost party.

Rui   September 4th, 2008 9:41 am ET

It is amazing how the liberal media uses doble standards in their coverage. Nobody reaised the issue of speech writers for Obama, Biden, or Michele, for that matter. Pitfull…

Napoleon Complex   September 4th, 2008 9:41 am ET

Thanks John McCain for energizing the Left. Most of the people I know are now going to get out and work for Obama. Enough of this divisiveness. Time to send Karl Rove and these so-called Christian Americans home. Their playbook is both un-Christian and un-American.

When can not argue issues, attack personalities. Good theater. Good speech writers. Good acting. Now explain how Republican platform will rescue fallen economy, failing health care, devaluated world standing, overtaxed military, freefalling accumulation of national debt and loss of jobs, loss of border control. A large amount of money could have been saved by handing out backscratchers to the attendees, telling them to scratch the back of the person to their right and then leave. "God's Will" is, unfortunately, not the answer to all of these issues. Pay a little attention to scientific wisdom like: a birth mother age of 44 years lends an odds ratio of trisomy 21 in the offspring of 1 to 41.

HP   September 4th, 2008 9:41 am ET

GOP party looks more and more like a old, boring movie which refuses to finish. They offer nothing new and fresh to face today's challenges. And Gov Palin is the biggest joke they could offer this entire year!! I'm surprised that the so-called "TV pundits" actually praised her speech. It was full of incorrect facts and was given just toappease her extreme right supporters.

txgop   September 4th, 2008 9:40 am ET

I heard other Palin speechs, and she simply dosen't sound the same. There is deff. added pressure and voice has probably changed due to some signifficant stress, she now getting. I seen people at work, deal with such mess, stress, and making the next tough decisions. If you can't take the heat, the get out the kitchen. So, put those dummy manuals down, and stop reading teleprompts word for word because we can't HEAR you Palin. I would challange Palin in a debate any day, those superfluous comments she makes, sets this women up perfectly for the DEMs.

Connie, Kansas   September 4th, 2008 9:40 am ET

It's fair to say that Sarah is no dummy. She was a sportscaster and learned to read a teleprompter years ago. Everyone knows she didn't write this speech. She's just the mouth peice for the Republicans. No substance. The good ole boys got her where they want her. No respect for herself and certainly none for her country.

WInds of Change   September 4th, 2008 9:40 am ET

Palin is precisely the sort of American the world despises. Sarcastic, ignorant, insulting, selfish, and stuck up.
I hope Americans feel that the winds of change have come and Barack Obama is the name.

But if American young men and women do not mind being ignored, despised, and left alone when they go traveling abroad for purposes other than idiotic wars to give the old generals another star, than Palin/McCain is the right choice.

I hope 51% of Americans are wiser than Palin. I am sure 50% are, because in my travels around this country I have meet hundreds of people to whom I would take my hat off. The hockey mom would be best to fetch those hockey pucks and attend to her young son who needs her more than America does. But clearly she doesn't have priorities right for her family, and she will not have priorities right for this country.

Dianne   September 4th, 2008 9:40 am ET

Gov. Palin merly spoke the truth about Obama and his ineptness last night. She also spoke clearly about her real-life experience and accomplishments.

Isn't it funny how the Democrats are calling her response the the awful attacks that the Democrats made towards her as "below the belt?"

Sorry Democrats you can't have it both ways – you too are so guilty of negative campaigning. You called yourselves the "evolved and intelegent" ones – humm who looks like the ignorant ones now?

Tony   September 4th, 2008 9:40 am ET

FACTS:

1) Romney and McCain hate each other, yet the hypocrisy was waist deep last night in his praise for McCain. Did anyone notice that the name Bush was not mentioned once???

2) Giuliani has milked 9/11 bone dry and wcouldn't give a speech to save his life that isn't about how wonderful he thinks he was during taht time.

3) Evangelical whack job. Enough said.

4) Read directly from the republican playbook. When you ahve no positive record of your own to stand on, ATTACK, ATTACk, ATTACK!

Dull, boring, all hot air. No solutions, no answers to anything that is a major concern to voters. It was as typical republican whine and bash night.

FACE IT PEOPLE….The republican PARTY is OVER!

David   September 4th, 2008 9:40 am ET

All I could think of when watching was "what a sarcastic lady." It was really annoying.

Also, what's wrong with bigger government? Will small government give you health care and education opportunities? People cannot provide these services for themselves! A good efficient government is important.

Bebee   September 4th, 2008 9:40 am ET

I think it's interesting to hear republicans and people in the media say stick to the issues and lay off family members. Did they say that when Michelle Obama was attacked everyday or when CNN showed Rev Wright so much, I started to think he was running for president? No.
I think it's perfectly appropriate for the media and everyone to inquire about Palin's family, experience and history, it's actually more patriotic to question our leader than allow them to lead us blindly. Also, I think it's hypocritical of republicans to ask the public to pay no attention to the fact that Mrs. Palin has a teenage daughter pregnant out of wedlock when this this woman promotes abstinence in schools and says no to safe sex education.
Lastly, has anyone noticed the lack of Americans of color in the delegation at the Republican Convention. It's a bit rediculous.

Carol   September 4th, 2008 9:40 am ET

This democrat will be voting for McCain/Palin. I am ashamed at the behavior of my party. This past week has put me over the edge.

Chipster   September 4th, 2008 9:39 am ET

Luis, if you think Liberal attacks are "indicative of fear, insecurity …" what do you think drives Conservative attacks?

Liberals aren't expecting Barack Obama to be any sort of a Messiah. We just want someone who will defend our Constitution against the abuse of power by the current Administration and Republican cronies who have used fear and prejudice to undermine it. Never in our nation's history has there ever been so much misuse of power. Our International reputation and relationships have suffered terribly .

Barack Obama is an advocate for Constitutional Law. He has the credentials necessary to restore our liberty and dignity. But Americans must stop being divided by fear and hatred. Stop listening to the rhetoric and look at the results of the last 7 years: exploding deficits, historic increase in the size of government, a war based on deceptions, those who attacked us remain at large, bankruptcies, mortgage defaults, outsourced jobs – is this seriously what you want for our country?

sky   September 4th, 2008 9:39 am ET

The Republicans have brought this down to a highschool level attracting jealous, fearful and small minded individuals to their throng of out of touch supporters. Things always come down to the bottom line…..the bottom line of the Democratic convention was a positive feeling about our country and our future. Even staunch Republicans came away feeling uplifted and positive. The idea that as a UNITED states we can solve these very heavy problems together was ringing from the rafters….. But this Republican convention is frightening; angry, cynical people spouting half truths and 16 year old cheerleader lines…..my teams better than yours….neah…..I guess when you have virtually nothing to say of any meaning then you resort to childish taunts and snotty humor.

Think about this……think about the fact that we are choosing a couple of people who will represent us around the world. People we would like to be proud of…people who represent the best and the brightest of us. We are selecting someone…..like you would an Olympic team…..the best….the smartest…..the most capable to keep up with other leaders…with other countries who have picked their best and brightest….. McCain and Palin are not that couple of people. I cringe at the thought……Atleast with Liberman hanging around McCain had a chance of remembering what was going on because Liberman could prompt him…..You will need a whole squad of people following McCain and Palin around. come on folks……wake up

KP   September 4th, 2008 9:39 am ET

I thought that her speech was o.k but like always it didn't say anything about what they are going to do if they make it to the White House. The Republicans all sounded so juvenile and childish including her. They were all like elementary school kids when you don't like someone you just talk bad about them. They are all a bunch of haters and that is going to be that party's downfall. This was her moment to shine and all she could talk about was everything that Obama was doing wrong and attack the Dems. I'm a voting Dem and for a while I was nervous about her and if she made a good first impression what they would mean for the Dems ticket, but after last night I'm not worried at all. If that was going to be the thing that she has to talk about then she is going to be in for a shock because karma comes back on us all. I think that when she gets to the V.P debates she is going to fall right before our eyes and that is going to be it for her. Biden is going to eat her alive!

Farrell, Houston, Tx   September 4th, 2008 9:39 am ET

Palin didn't talk about what qualifies her and her speech was more of the same. We've heard from the Republicans the same old worn out speech about John McCain which is a slap in the face to other Vietnam veterans who so bravely served, including my husband, brother, and brother-in-law who were all injured physically and mentally. I find Republicans to be very divisive for our country and have the same George W. Bush mentality which isn't going to repair Americas problems, just continue to divide and destroy.

Matt   September 4th, 2008 9:39 am ET

If anything, I believe that conservatives are more fired up about their No. 2, then No. 1. But if that's the course they want to follow than so be it. Judging by the majority of posts on these CNN boards, it seems as though people are tired of attacks. At that's what it appears Palin did. The GOP has always seemed to be about fear that those under them will actually stand up for what they believe in. Thus attacks on Obama.

Tara, Alabama   September 4th, 2008 9:39 am ET

Hillary Clinton says and does more unladylike things before breakfast than Sarah Palin did in that speech. For years, Hillary's rudeness has rankled with me and is in part what drove me from the Clintons and the Democratic party. I question the veracity of anyone who could call Hillary a lady and keep a straight face. As a woman, I can barely bring myself to call Hillary a woman.
But now Sarah Palin… here is a future President for women and for the country! I've been both a working woman and a stay at home mom, and I found nothing in her speech that offended me in the least. After being thoroughly disenchanted with the entire political process via the Clintons, I am almost feeling hopeful again for the first time in years. Even if you don't like John McCain, you should vote for him to increase the chances of putting Palin in office in 4 years!

i just want to say thing to governor baracuda that america was build one community at a time, meaning a whole lot of people like Obama, put aside their pride and help raise their community. to pick on Obama for choosing to help people in needs in low and misrepresented community is an insult to every american that ever stoop for something in their community, for every coach, every teacher, every police officer, every small town sheriff and so on. i live in a community where Obama's organisational skills would be greatly appreciated. Senator Obama had the knowledge and was qualify to work for any firm in america for as much money has he wanted, but he chose to be a community organizer for a small $10,000 a yr with a beat up car. we need more people who think like senator obama for america to be great again. how can the republican run on the theme"country first" when they are degrading everyone who make this country great. IF MY COMMUNITY COULD GROW THE NEXT SOLDIER FOR IRAQ, IT SURE CAN PRODUCE THE NEXT PRESIDENT FOR THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. COMMUNITY ORGANIZER MAKES THIS COUNTRY GREAT. THANK YOU SENATOR OBAMA

California Gold   September 4th, 2008 9:39 am ET

Palin's slug-fest approach to national politics is offensive. It may play well in Alaska, but she has said and done nothing for middle America (all those states she and Elmer Fudd McCain need) for voters. Hurtling barbs and insults at others is more of the same harsh dialogue. It's September. Millions of households are going to miss another mortgage payment, are fearful that a harsh winter will strip them of money for heating costs while opting to go to their charity for food, and all the Republicans offer is hateful rhetoric about the Democrats. When did the Republicans forget we are a nation of the people, by the people and FOR the people.

carol   September 4th, 2008 9:38 am ET

All I hear from the media this morning is how we women can relate to her. I am a mother of 3 and can relate to her and she seems to have a nice family. Does that make her qualified to be vice president of the United States? Absolutely not. She introduced her family and attacked Obama. It's a little scary how much the conservative right wing who elected George Bush love her. Let's not make the same mistake again…

Sarah Palin hit it out of the park! Go Girl! She is a tough cookie that has proven leadership and care for this country without bowing to the special interests who want to create more government and redistribute wealth. Huckabee was terrific and so was Guiliani. YOu can not legislate wealth and opportunity. Let people keep more of their hard earned money and create their own opportunity. Isn' that why so many immigrants want to come to the US??? Duh. Good ol' boys? Obama picked a good ol' boy because he needs the help and influence of the same old crap going on in Washington. McCain, on the otherhand, picked a maverick who doesn't just talk the talk but has proven she walks the walk!

I think, therefore I am, republican!

John in Ohio   September 4th, 2008 9:38 am ET

Bush, McCain, Romney, Huckabee, Guiliani, and Palin have no new ideas. They have no solutions for the problems they have gotten our country into. As a result, since they have nothing to stand for, they attack community organizers, they attack Congressional Democrats who can't do anything thanks to an uncooperative and belligerent president and the absence of a veto-proof majority, they attack Obama, they just attack and attack and attack.

The thing is, we've seen this before. In 2004, Kerry didn't really stand for anything, except that he wasn't Bush. It didn't work out for him. This year, McCain is in Kerry's 2004 role, he doesn't have any ideas or solutions for you or me, all he has is that he isn't Obama. It won't work for him.

Paul   September 4th, 2008 9:38 am ET

Liberal's are far from being afraid of Palin (whatever that is supposed to mean or imply). In fact they are surprised that she so thoroughly embraced George Bush in her speech last night. Repug's should not be quite so cheery just yet. While Palin's speech was well delivered (unlike Obama who writes his own speeches she did not write her speech last night) it clearly echoed Bush's failed ideas. Do the repugs really think that more of these distortions of reality and divisive Rove/Bush/McCain tactics will really address the economic and security issues that they have not addressed in the last eight years. Do they think that they are going to be able to dupe the American people yet again? Do they think that one of the most brilliant democratic tickets in a generation will let them get away with it? Sorry guys . . . unlikely!

Confident supporter of Obama/Biden 08

Jo Anne Weathers   September 4th, 2008 9:38 am ET

I too, am deeply offended by and disappointed int the Palin speech last evening- As a woman, as a minority, as an American citizen.
I am a staunt Obama supporter, but was willing to give this woman
the benefit of the doubt based on many factors – including I felt she
might have been judged unfairly ,by no fault of her own.
Well, after hearing her reiterate the divisive, fear-mongering, rhetoric
of the "Belt-way, Good 'Ol Boys" that she claims to be against, I can't
invision her as anything but the "Pitt-Bull with lipstick" that she described herself as. She hit THAT out of the park!!!!!
Please note also, that in an environment of 21st century "CHANGE" – the RCN is STILL represented by 95% causacian voters – reminiscent of the1950's – 1960's. Yea – that is change we can believe in and trust them to bring about!!!!! The RNC is a big ZERO.

OBAMA-BIDEN 2008 >

Susanne   September 4th, 2008 9:38 am ET

I agree that with what I have seen of the RNC, it will be slug-it-out as usual through the campaign. I am sick of this and in general sick of the Republican Religious Right. While I agree with a lot of the McCain stands on issues, I think we are in dire need of a national Health Care plan – so I will either cast my first vote for a Democratic Presidential Nominee or stay home. Remember Jack Kennedy didn't have much experience either and he also didn't accomplish much, but people seem to think he was a great president (myself excluded); so bring on Obama.

What a sad night for America. The speech tonight by Governor Palin sounded like a return to the Bush speeches of old. She used the same mocking, sarcastic tone always used by W. I said a prayer last night before bed that Americans are smarter this time. Our country doesn't need four more years of this divisive attitude. That was a horrible example for our youth from this proud "mom". She should be ashamed!!

Barbara Campbell   September 4th, 2008 9:37 am ET

No doubt Sarah Palin plays well with the far right, but the McCain camp can’t explain why they didn’t pick a more qualified Republican woman (since gender seems to be the primary criterion) like Olympia Snowe or Kay Hutchinson. (The answer: they’re pro-choice.) Nor can McCain name a single foreign policy or military command decision that Palin has made. Naturally they want to discredit the media and scream “sexist” the moment there’s a suggestion that Palin isn’t qualified to be VP (and tie-breaker in the Senate).

No, Palin, like McCain and Bush, has been chosen by the small group of neocons who run the Republican party, because these ostensible “leaders” can be controlled by the neocons. They’re hoping that their propaganda people can convince Americans that the White House needs a couple more cowboys running the country.

There will certainly be sexist remarks planted by McCain operatives to galvanize women in support of Palin.

To the media: for the sake of our democracy, please don’t be intimidated or manipulated by rightwing aggression and propaganda. Report the facts; investigate allegations; avoid sensationalism.

Tired of W, OH   September 4th, 2008 9:36 am ET

When's the last time you've heard the GOP put forth a positive message about where they want to take this country? When's the last time you've heard them talk about policies? It's always, "Well, Obama doesn't have experience" or "The Democrats want to do this or that."

They never talk about their policies because THEY DON'T EXIST! Their policies are continuing the current broken policies! Wake Up! Don't let the GOP sucker this country again!

No Mcsame or Not Hillary in 08   September 4th, 2008 9:36 am ET

The no solutions blame the liberal media old school Republican approach. A success story until this November 4.

McCain/Palin must be synonomous with that french expression used to describe a lack of substance-full of $h!t.

In Palins littany of attacks she never once diverted from the telepromopter to say i will do this this and this for our healthcare system, education, our economy, gas prices, infastructure, renewable energy, mortgage crisis, immagration, securing our borders, rebuilding the military, social security, national deficit.
This is what i wanted to know about from a canidate a few heartbeats away from presidency. Not stab after stab and joke after joke mixed in with "I'm a hockey mom".

She is not Hillary but she definitely looks like she took notes from Romney. Excellent performance republicans preach to your base. Eff "whiney" Americans who are struggling right now fear mongering will win you that election not values or goals! Remember the mcbush campaign said this election is most definitely not about the issues and thats the way they intend to keep it. In order to win that is.

Who said that? an Al-Quaida member ? no it was Sarah Pallin at her church !

Same old Bush rhetoric !

Tired of the empty snark   September 4th, 2008 9:36 am ET

When you have nothing postitive to run on, you attack. That's all they've got. Yes, she read her prescripted speech well – she can handle a teleprompter, not well, but at an acceptable level, but it still doesn't change the fact that she is unqualified for the job.

I got disgusted with the snark – that's all there was. No mention of the economy, the war – the issues. I guess she's waiting for the index cards from the campaign staff to tell her what her positions on the issues are. It is also a shame to see that the republican party has such distain for community service. I guess it's more respectable to take advantage of your community than it is to build it up. The argument that she has more qualifications is laughable, but I bet the rabid base is eating it up.

One thing for sure – I now know where all the "bitter" people are.

The gop offers nothing but more of the same, only with dumber folks at the help.

According to Webster's Online Dictionary, the word "shrill" has definitions that do not refer to sound or voice pitch:

4. betraying some strong emotion or attitude in an exaggerated amount, as antagonism or defensiveness.

5. marked by great intensity; keen: the shrill, incandescent light of the exploding bomb.

One of the Republican congressmen in the Clinton impeachment hearings used the term "shrill voices" and I don't recall it as having any sexist overtones.

I have seen the divisiveness of the Democratic Party! Gov. Palin did a great job last night in presenting herself and her Party to the American people! Love it!

I wasn't at all impressed with Palin's speech. It offered only anger, bitterness, fear, and divide. It did NOT offer a single practical solution to America's current domestic and international challenges. In essence, it offered more of the same old tired hateful politics. Well, I for one am sick-and-tired of right-wing cynical Republicans diverting the attention of the American People away from the issues that matter and toward the issues that don't matter. Despite her attempt at "hitting back hard" I would not trust Palin to lead this nation if my life depended on it. Divisiveness indeed! Did any one really expect a uniting of this country from the Republicans. Those thin skinned conservatives better be ready for the onslaught. Vote for McCain. Go ahead, all you right winged conservatives. Vote for your McCain and watch the country go farther down the toilet than it already is. Stop letting the rediculous GOP's brainwash you into believing that their way is the right way and the only way? War?? It's not right!! That's all they seem to care about! John McCain spent 5 years in a prison, well my father is a war veteran and he is voting for OBAMA! Let's see how long McCain can ride the war veteran ticket. Come on! Get over it, there are lots of vets who dont agree with it, but they did what they had to for their country and you don't see them reminding everyone everyday about it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is time for change, and honestly can you all as Americans, sit back and say that the GOP has done a great job up unitl now. As far as i am concerned Al Gore is the current president since he legally WON the popular vote and GW finagled his sticky little fingers into working into this role as Commander. Wake up America, we cant go on like this. WE all love our country, do the right thing and the only thing right to do is vote for OBAMA/BIDEN 08!

There is a higher force that will show John Mccain and sarah Palin the true meaning of being a great american for all.

Congratulations Palin, with your comment about what a mayor is, that makes you about as qualified as Obama was in 1996. Now how do you make up for his experience from 8 years in the state senate and almost 3 years in the US senate? And as for Obama not having any executive experience….. don't look at McCain, because his experience has been in the House and the Senate, so no executive experience there either.

Here is my opinion of the speech….
she did what she needed to do for the conservative republilcan base that does not like McCain….
she also managed to tell her story which is impressive…however in doing so she also tore lots of people down and dismissive of their work…
she used the same tactics of the hard right of pres. bush to be divisive rather than unifying…
she made comments that were untrue regarding her record as well as Obama's….we do not want lies we want truth from all of them

Here is my problem with Palin….
she is a candidate that is not going to be allowed to answer questions from any press until she goes to "bootcamp" to learn the issues….sorry….not a good choice…we need someone who already knows the issues.

Didn't anyone in that crowd of mostly whites that applauded Sarah Palin, another white, for attacking Obama for writing memoirs, think that perhaps those books could inspire young African-Americans to reach for their dreams like he has. The GOP should be ashamed of that moment last night. Notice racial diversity isn't one of their themes.

Sarah Palin is a mother of how many children with a baby that needed care the most? what happen if family matters come up and as well as the country matter or emergency come up. what happened if all both things(emergency) comes up? i have no doubt she would have to picked the family first. oh yeah and a 17 year old who is expecting too. america we needed someone who can be available 100% to our country. what happened if something happened to john mccain due to aging? no doubt: sarah will be promoting to acting pesident. and again to the question. family matters(emergency) or country first?.I wondered if john mccain ever thought of that? that american shows poor judgment on john mccain.

Compare the vision of these two speeches:

"I have spoken of a thousand points of light, of all the community organizations that are spread like stars throughout the Nation, doing good. We will work hand in hand, encouraging, sometimes leading, sometimes being led, rewarding." George H.W. Bush, 1/20/89

"I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a 'community organizer,' except that you have actual responsibilities. " Sarah Palin 9/3/08

Our town is heavily reliant on community organizations, organizers and volunteers to provide services to the elderly, the poor, the homeless families, the abused women and children. I'm sorry Gov. Palin does not see their value.

Tony   September 4th, 2008 9:32 am ET

Palin looked like a school marm last night with pointing her finger at the cameras everytime she tried to make a point, which were very week.

If you closed your eyes and pictured Bush speaking, it would have been a speech exactly like what he would ahve given.

No solutions on the economy, healthcare, joblessness, etc. were even mentioned. Why? Because the republicans have no answers or plan.

The people in the convention hall bought it all hook, line and sinker, but that ist o be expected. That is why they were chosen to be there. Palin wants to act like she is tough and can take whatever comes here way, yet the republicans are in front of every camera and microphone they can find warning Biden that he ahd better not come across as bullying her in the debates.

What a joke. If she can't handle the toughness in a debate with her opponent, only republicans would believe that she could never go head to head with a world leader. She read and executed a speech written for her and rehearsed, and delivered it somewhat satisfactorily.

However, when the debates begin and she either uses the "sexist", "bully" excuses that any intelligent person knows are coming when sitting down with Biden, I hope he keeps his cool and composure and asks, "If you cannot handle my criticism, my holding you accountable, etc., how in the world are you going to deal with foreign leaders who will NOT make a concession for your being a woman?"

zuri   September 4th, 2008 9:32 am ET

Sarah Palin certainly showed her true colors, and they're not red, white, and blue. They're red, red, and blood red! A barracuda, a pit bull — right on target. What I saw in her was pure, unbridled aggression – inflicted with a comfortable smile. She's scary. We're just about to be rid of George W Bush, with his cowboy politics, and the Republicans want us to be comfortable if we have to turn our country over to Palin, with her attack dog politics. Sarah Palin is the worst of George W. Bush – squared! I'm not willing to let an attack dog run lose in the Executive branch of government, and definitely not on the world stage! America is better than that. In only a few days, Sarah Palin has shown the world that she is smart, cunning, capable of deception, and that she is comfortable with, and even enjoys, unbridled aggression. There's a word for people who get pleasure from being aggressive… For now, let's just say that the word is "dangerous". The only place that Sarah Palin can lead this country is to a dog fight out back – or worse case scenario, to war and further isolation in the world.

tim   September 4th, 2008 9:32 am ET

So, now we know that PUPPET PALIN can read a speech that was carefully written for her and rehearsed for hours. So what. Even a senile Reagan could read cue cards. It doesn't change the fact that PUPPET PALIN is in no way qualified to be VP, or God forbid, president. PUPPET PALIN has the hand of the religious right up her back, moving her mouth. So what. Right wingers are always preaching personal responsibility. But John McCain and the GOP cynically think that if they hide behind PUPPET PALIN then the American people won't hold them accountable for a devastated economy, higher prices and lower wages, a failed foreign policy, and record bankruptcies and foreclosures. GOP, you can't put a pretty face on that record! That's why PUPPET PALIN was manipulated to make personal attacks, because on the issues that are important to Americans, the GOP doesn't have a clue.

You wrap yourself in a "patriotic flag" and rally yourselves to whine about Obama, all the while the Republicans are taking money from poor people like you, giving it to rich people who don't need it like me, spying on you illegally to make sure you don't turn against them, screwing you with $4/gallon gas while Exxon makes $15bil a month in profit, al while sending your kids over to die in the desert fighting over oil while ours hang out at the country club.

When the novelty of all this wears off, and common sense prevail. Staring us in the face is a choice to be made. Obama/Biden and McCain/Pilan. Now the question is considering the state of the economy, who do you want to lead this country the next four years? Obama/Biden with change from the failed policies of Bush, or, McCain/Palin with the same failed policies of Bush. Consider the destiny of the country when you've cooled down.

Luis, they haven't said one thing about anything this week? Where are the ideas? At least Obama laid out a plan of things he hopes to accomplish. Last night was just a waste. I made a donation to the Obama campaign after Romney's quote of "We should be less worried about doing what is right by teacher unions, and more worried about doing what is right by students". He doesn't get it, neither does the GOP.

I am disgusted by the hypocrasy coming from my own party.

I am a women and as far as I am concerned, you want to throw punches, be prepared to get them back. All is fair in love and war. As far as comparing herself to a pit bull, but with lipstick, is that supposed to show us how strong and fierce she is? Why do some women feel they need to make these kind of statements? The statement shows a lack of strength to me, if you have to broadcast it, then its not strength at all. I am not impressed, the pit bull remark is the only remark that seemed sincere from her, it all seemed practiced and cold.

I wonder, why no one ever asked about those "smart-behind-the-scene" writers before.

And , why is Obama so fearful of Palin ?
Just because, she is the outsider and all set to rip off Obama and his Washington connections.

Obama says is two faced, no doubts. He keeps on saying "old Washington Politics" but is deeply involved with them.

I think if Palin doesn't want the family as topic of discussion, keep them out of the limelight w/ the baby!

I think this family from Alaska could stand some Republican grooming(front porch material)and refinement…, since we're looking at character instead of issues.

The speech had Bush all over it 100%. Did anyone recognize how the Minority (hispanics) were responded to(very little applause). Palin should be able to take the hits just as she's giving them out. She opened the can of worms and should be able to accept the return response.

Her speech was relevant because she's a professional journalist, why wouldn't it come across that way? Her Alaska accomplishments are of no comparsions to Larger cities and states, and it's in debt and holds a deficit in the millions. So let's not enlarge her experience and accomplishment to fit the qualifications of a Vice President. McCain's an older person w/ an anger problem and he's set in his ways if he's elected this country is due to continue to fail and what help what Palin be but to help it along. She should be offended that she's a spontaneous on the spot selection for the position, but .. that's the way the Republicans make their decisions anyways.. she should understand.

Jesaira   September 4th, 2008 9:29 am ET

Palin's style and delivery was excellent; however, the content lacked substance and furthermore, it was very insulting to women in politics. There is absolutely no reason to reduce yourself to insults, negativity and cyncism whenever Americans are looking for REAL solutions. These immature acts of politics is what further corrupts this nation…

I didn't hear her mention anything about her plans to improve the economy, healthcare, etc…everything appeared STAGED…nothing seemed genuine! I feel as though her family has been exploited because of her political pursuits…I believe in women, women politics, women in leadership; however, I don't believe that we, as women, should be extremely careful what we "expose" our families too…

Finally, I must admit I am very insulted by the fact that the McCain thinks that bring a woman into the mix will strengthen his chances for being elected…Is this also a road of self-discovery for Palin as well???

I urge AMERICA, please make the right choice, don't succumb to such foolishness!

Lee, Ann Arbor, Michigan   September 4th, 2008 9:29 am ET

The libs are unsettled now that Sarah Palin has come on the scene. You can tell by how the MSM is attacking her and trying to come up to deflect on what is a great ticket for the GOP.

She knows how to get things done and SHE IS the REAL DEAL!

She will be a GREAT VP. She is an inspiration to all and is the kind of person THAT WORKING AMERICAN'S CAN IDENTIFY WITH.

She was direct and honest on what the dems stand for and how they behave. The dem ticket would be bad for America and Obama is a socialist.

Phil in KC   September 4th, 2008 9:27 am ET

I watched the last half of Rudy's speech and all of Sarah's speech last night. The twisted facts, distortions, half-truths and outright lies – it was all I could do to keep from throwing something at my flat-screen TV.
Yes, Sarah did a great job of delivering the speech and she certainly played well to her base, but someone ought to be doing some fact-checking. The Republicans are not competing on the issues; they're just making stuff up as they go along.
And, yes, it is very much like George W. Bush. Same policies. Same "us vs. them" rhetoric. And, let's not forget that W was a governor who had all that executive experience and, yet, was a good old boy that some people (not me ) would enjoy sitting down and having a beer with. That's Sarah. 2 year governor with no Washington experience whatsoever. She's a self-proclaimed PTA and hockey mom. That's great if you're running for city council or even mayor of a small podunk town. But that does not qualify her to play in the big leagues. We've had that for the last 8 years and I, for one, am sick and tired of it.

Nan   September 4th, 2008 9:27 am ET

I was not surprised that Palin was a good speaker. She had the best GOP writers crafting her speech and she does have that BA in journalism from the U of Idaho. I was still surprised that when all she did was attack Obama. Nothing about what SHE feels about health care, the economy etc. I heard her praise McCain but I still have no idea on where she stands on the main issues. Cute family. Interesting that she wants her family privacy respected and not exploited unless it is foir her political gain. I am waiting for the debates when she has not teleprompter no speech writers. Maybe then we will get a true picture. Also, her recorde is really bad. Research it for yourself. She hasn't made many good decisions.

interesting   September 4th, 2008 9:27 am ET

Obama is SCARED and should.

YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!

Truth hurts doesn't it.

If you can't take the heat, get out the kitchen.

PUMA 2008! We still here!

Ed, Santa Fe NM   September 4th, 2008 9:27 am ET

another right-winger who filters everything thru her religious views….

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin told ministry students at her former church that the United States sent troops to fight in the Iraq war on a "task that is from God."

SCARY

Virginia Voter   September 4th, 2008 9:27 am ET

Very condescending speech – you didn't see anything like that at the DNC. They were just talking about the issues. I guess we still have McCain's speech coming up, but as of right now I'm still not sure what the Republicans plan to do about these ridiculous gas prices, and the convention is almost over.

Tommy in virginia   September 4th, 2008 9:27 am ET

I was insulted by her attacks on community organizers. I guess I should not be surprised the republicans can not relate to people that are struggling! They should reexamine there policies towards working families if they really want to relate to the "common man" What a joke!

unimpressed   September 4th, 2008 9:27 am ET

Sarah Palin's performance last night was entertaining. Somewhat like a cross between a Springer-style reality show and a celebrity roast.

But among all of her quips and zingers there was nothing of substance. It's clear by now that she is nothing of substance.

After the catastrophic mess that Bush and his followers have made of the country, we need more than a shallow entertainer in the nation's second-highest position.

Erik   September 4th, 2008 9:27 am ET

Lots of vitriol, lots of personal attack content, but no sense of why she is the best of all Republican leaders in America today to stand ready to be President. How is she the most qualified GOP leader to be Vice President? The speech gave us nothing of substance (does that accusation sound familiar?).

CYNTHIA CAMPBELL   September 4th, 2008 9:26 am ET

This women does not represent me or any other Woman in my family much less my friends. She is position hungry and cares nothing for Family values and nothing was said from the Republicans about the Economy or Healthcare or the USA Budget. I also noticed that the Republican convention did not REPRESENT African Americans, Asians, Native Americans, Africans, etc. The RACISM was running rampid and it was very boring. They did not address the major things that needed to be addressed they just did a lot of bashing of the Dems and I was very upset. Not that I am a Black person (I'm white) They (The Republicans) don't care about the minorities just Whites and America is made up of All people. I asked my Husband "What's wrong with this picture"? The Media said nothing about that!

Charlotte   September 4th, 2008 9:26 am ET

I'm reminded of the line in TORA TORA, we have awakened a sleeping giant. The Republicians are excited by Palin in what was a lack luster campaign, compared to columns and fireworks. This is getting more exciting everyday..Another Bush term, I don't think so.

arc, Lugano CH   September 4th, 2008 9:26 am ET

Of course it was written by Bush's speech writer. It was obvious that Palin was simply regurgitating the party rhetoric full of attacks, isolationism, fear mongering yet lacking any real substance. Did you notice, she practiced the ‘lower lip emphases for every punchline.

The only parts that weren’t scripted were those when she spoke of her family. Then again, however nice her family may be, it doesn't offer any insight into her views of healthcare.

Democrats are not allowed to respond because the Republicans will scream foul and claim 'sexism'. This takes the cake!

Republicans complaining about sexism or anything else are like Nazi-collaborators complaining about being mistreated after the end of WWII.

Tom L   September 4th, 2008 9:26 am ET

Palin's speech was shrill and sarcastic. I wasn't sure if she was outlining her vision for America's future or auditioning for amateur night at the Comedy Club.

In the mean time America is borrowing billions of dollars from less than friendly nations to run it's government and it's financial institutions, people are still losing their homes because of the mortgage mess, the US/Mexico still looks like Swiss cheese, etc….. That's not very funny, is it?

Oh well, I guess Palin will give her ideas for solving problems some other night.

Louise   September 4th, 2008 9:26 am ET

Sarah Palin gave an amazing speech that lets the country know how hard she will work for you, just as she does in alaska. She understands the urgency for us to be energy independent, she fully understands the risk of the world ganging up on american becuase we rely heavily on forein oil and gas. she was right on the mark last night and i have never known conservatives to be so riled up.

Palin is my hero !!!

Bubba   September 4th, 2008 9:26 am ET

She's an unqualified success! And I agree, her speech was doo doo. Just another Publican attack dog, only with lipstick. It'll take a lot of lipstick before the boys will kiss that pig, IF you know what I mean and I think you do.

Debbie, Blue Springs, MO   September 4th, 2008 9:25 am ET

My husband said last night before he went to bed that listening to Obama was energizing. Listening to the Republicans zapped him.

Some things give you energy and others zap all of the energy of the room.

I would rather have an ivy league community organizer that wants to help people back to work than someone who is trying to protect the tax breaks of all the millionaires.

The Republicans actions for the past eight years have spoken louder than any speech.

We want better !!!

Chad   September 4th, 2008 9:25 am ET

I consider Nuclear Non-Proliferation legislation to be a "major law or reform". Honey, when you "co-author" legislation, it still means that you wrote it.

McCain = Bush   September 4th, 2008 9:25 am ET

HOW MANY AMERICANS AND HOW MANY PROBLEMS WOULD A McCAIN-PALIN ADMINISTRATION IGNORE DUE TO THEIR COMBINED ARROGANCE, HATEFULNESS, ANGER, EXCLUSIVE RIGHT WING- NESS, GREED AND INCOMPETENCE? MOST of America..

VET PALIN NOW   September 4th, 2008 9:25 am ET

Last night's display/showcase of Sarah the Pitbull and the pack of losers who preceded her George Bush ideals speech may have energized the Republican base, but, did nothing for average American moms.
The attack on Obama was disgraceful……especially being delivered by Sarah. Women are to smart these days to be fooled by smoke and mirrors.
Is there no diversity in the Republican party? The audience did not represent the make up of the United States of Anerica.

Clinton Supporter   September 4th, 2008 9:25 am ET

Oh, those Democrats – all warm and fuzzy while those awful Republicans are fierce and mean!

Oooh – divisive – not like us at all. We've done a bang-up job of keeping our party together.

Look at all the nice things we made Hillary say.

Terry, Butte, Mt   September 4th, 2008 9:25 am ET

Talk about divisive. I can not believe the republicans bashed community organizations over and over again.

Oops!

Tony   September 4th, 2008 9:25 am ET

Thank you, thatk you, thank you Sara Palin!

My father jsut turned 80 years old on Aug. 1st and for the first time in his life is voting for the DEMOCRATIC ticket.

He said that after watching the convention last night, listening to Romney, Huckabee, Giuliani, and yourself, that he was finally convinced that the Republican Party is nothing more than an empty shell. He said that he heard NOTHING about how you and McCain plan to fix the economy, get the country out of debt, nothing on healthcare, unemployment, etc.

He even remarked that during Romney's tirade he did not mention Bush even once, simply because there is no defending Bush and his presidency, and that Giluliani has milked 9/11 bone dry. He was extremely disappointed by the hypocrisy of people like Romney and Huckabee since it was so obvious during the primaries that they despise each other and to hear them praising each other and McCain made him sick to his stomach.

He says that the entire program last night showed that when someone cannot run on their own postivie record that the republicans always resort to attack, attack, attack and that speaks volumes to anyone intelligent enough to listen.

Even my father, with his bad eyesight could deliver a speech that was crafted, written for you by someone else, practiced, staged and hollow.

THANK YOU SARA!

Paul   September 4th, 2008 9:24 am ET

My Lord and Savior started out as a Community Organizer. Paul the apostle was a Community Organizer. The people who crucified him were "Mayors and Governers".

Laugh at me now…i'll pray for you.

Not laughing   September 4th, 2008 9:24 am ET

During the DNC, there was a constant drum beat about the need for specifics to show how the Democrats would implement their agenda of change. They delivered. All we are getting from the Republicans is divisive hate speech, with not a word about what policies they will be instituting to implement their "change" agenda.

The media needs to be as insistent on policy specifics with the Republicans as they have with the Democrats. The Republicans are skating by on style.

Jay   September 4th, 2008 9:24 am ET

Divisive, Shrill, Sarcastic, Inexperienced [adj]: Words used to describe anyone beating a liberal in an argument.

Paul Dobro   September 4th, 2008 9:24 am ET

If you have no plans, have no excuses for 1 year debt in history, banks failing every day, $10 billion a month on Iraq, lack of creditability in the world, and you have a bunch of freinds who made millions off the war, all you can do is JOKE and LAUGH about the other guy that is trying to fix the issues.

Politics of old (as evidenced by Bush's speech writter for Palin) that got us into this MESS will not work.

The Stage was so ugly! It made the speaker look tiny and lost against the black. The crowd looked more like the line at the afternoon buffet then a political party and they were entertained by the comedy stylings of Rudy!

Does this campaign have any idea what they are doing?????

Christina   September 4th, 2008 9:24 am ET

What's the matter?? Obama camp and supporters have all their panties, whoops, underwears in a bunch??

She did a great job and she's tough! I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!

After Clinton lose, I was going McCain. After DNC Convention, I was undecided. After RNC Convention… I am going Republican!!!

Btw, loved Guiliani & Huckabee!!!!!!!!!!

Stud   September 4th, 2008 9:23 am ET

All she did was practice a speech all week that was written for her. Her speech mas mostly sarcastic comments and never explained why she should be VP. What a joke.

Tammy   September 4th, 2008 9:23 am ET

Excuse me but Obama has been in the senate for 8 years and has done NOTHING. He has spent most of his time campaigning for his next move not accomplishing anything. Republicans hit the nail on the head last night when they quoted Obama's record of 130 present votes meaning he can not make up his mind or he just did not want to go on the record because he was afraid of being on the wrong side. We need true leadership in times like this.

PS The economy will always go in cycles not matter who is in the white house.

Get Real   September 4th, 2008 9:23 am ET

What a Mockery of Womanhood!

She in fact was sexist in several her comments:

'Gal'
'Old Boy Network'
'Pitt Bull with LipStick'
'Hockey Mom'
Sarah took off the table Sexism… Get to the issues

Thanks but no Thanks, but let me keep the 225 Million Dollars
Oh, we are outside of Washington, but send Wasilla 27 Million Dollars
Oh, I can manage a budget, but I will leave it 22 Million in Debt,
Oh, I can get $1000/Capita of Federal Money from my hired lobyist
You are either for me or against me
War, War, War, Fight, Fight, Fight

Get real… this lady is just Mrs. Sarah McBush, married at teh hips,. The Republicans are going to wake up after Nov. 4 with a hang over and realized they married the person in Vegas after only knowing them for 1 night.

I do not buy this at ALL.

Marie-Lynn   September 4th, 2008 9:22 am ET

I never seen a divider party as the rep. Yesterday I saw the most nasty speeches made in my entire life. That was so ugly an unfair to watch , I just can't believe that all the audience was really happy wit what the hear. Again the gop show how low they can go… Hope and pray that this time is not gone work. I think that americans really wants change on politics and issues for equality.
God bless the street workers no matter what their color ar race…
Good job your done and hope this convention by hypocrit won't change your mine ion peoples needs the most. Vet includ.

Mud Slinging and Scare Tactics Won't Work This Time   September 4th, 2008 9:22 am ET

Typical Republican rhetoric, is what you call the last 3 days of the RNC. The truth of the matter is, that's all they have, and always have been about. News Flash McCain & Palin, the American People are SMARTER than that. Scare tactics and mud slinging won't work this time around. Republicans talk about working across the isle, but the last 3 days they've done nothing but further divide the country. I thought I was looking at a KKK convention as opposed to the Republican Convention; but then again, we are talking about a Republican President who left thousands of African American people to fend for themselves during, and after Hurricane Katrina. So their little Broke Back Mountain dipiction this week should strike no supprise. Another News Flash McCain & Palin, since your party is right and EVERYONE Else is wrong, what are you going to do for the tremendous deficit that Your Party's President has gotten us in? How about affordable Health Care? Better Jobs? Reversing the negative effect of the ECONOMY your Party has gotten us into? What about the rising cost of food and gas? THE REAL ISSUES THAT AMERICAN PEOPLE ARE FACING ON A DAY TO DAY BASIS!!! The Republican Brand can't answer these questions, BECAUSE THEY DON'T HAVE A CLUE!!! Here's some words of advice, before you go out attempting to tear down someone else's character with the mud slinging, you might want to take a look in the mirror, or better yet take a bath, because you're not so sqeacky clean yourself.

Ex-PUMA 4 Obama   September 4th, 2008 9:22 am ET

The MudSlinging speech writer:

Palin's speech writer was Bush's speech writer and it showed. The convention last night carried such a negative tone. The Republicans used Palin last night. They tried to make her look dangerous to deal with.

What the Republicans will try to do now is keep her away from "real" reporters. The speech was written and now she has to face the real world.

IT'S ON NOW! The campaign opened that door last night when they wrote the speech. So, now they can't cry foul when reporters get to her.

The entire night was all negative towards the Obama campaign and the media.

She will no longer be handled with kid gloves.

Brian from Texas   September 4th, 2008 9:22 am ET

Yes!!! Those are my feelings exactly!

Dave   September 4th, 2008 9:22 am ET

I give her speach an A for its entertainment value and divisiveness, and an F for substance and vision. Which do the American people want in the White House?…I guess we will find out soon!

Baze   September 4th, 2008 9:21 am ET

Another angry radical G.O.P. They've become a cult of negativity and deception.

Maria   September 4th, 2008 9:21 am ET

Ya Think????

Maybe even more divisive than Bush… if that's even possible.

Dave   September 4th, 2008 9:21 am ET

Wasn't it just a week ago that Obama was using divisiveness to fire up the democrats. I guess Obama has free reign to be a hypocrite.

Truth hurts   September 4th, 2008 9:21 am ET

ahh, did little Sarah hit a nerve with Obama supporters…

Independent Voter   September 4th, 2008 9:21 am ET

While I don't think I can bring myself to cast a vote for the Republican ticket, I must say I totally enjoyed the one person in America who dares to attack Obama's Do-Nothing record to date.

I love the 2 memoirs and NO legislation!

Can't vote for the Empty Suit either, though. Is "she's SHRILL" the best you can do??

Visions of BO and Co.'s attack on Hillary instantly come to mind.

New York   September 4th, 2008 9:21 am ET

Palin is to McCain what Kerik was to Rudy…….A big joke…act tough and all crooked…As a woman I'm insulted that Mc Cain is using her to gain votes…sad.sad.sad.

Morgan   September 4th, 2008 9:20 am ET

She certainly showed poise but so what. Attacking the other side fails to mention exactly how repressive your own policies would be. Obama writes his own speeches by the way. Ms. Palin can deliver a speech, but what would the speech be if she wrote it herself?

anon   September 4th, 2008 9:20 am ET

how was Joe Biden's negative attack speech at the democrat convention, NOT divisive?

This is what Veep candidates do, democrat AND republican, and the typical attacks of the attacks are getting old.

Lisa M   September 4th, 2008 9:20 am ET

You could tell that it was a Bush writer that wrote that speech. Nothing of substance, very little truth, mostly attacks on the "enemy".

Franky   September 4th, 2008 9:19 am ET

And can I say something else?? I don't know why the GOP is blaming the media!! Maybe if it wasn't for them, then maybe they wouldn't get enough much attention. They like to get flattered but flattery is not the name of their game?? I don't know exactly who the GOP was targeting. I don't know what's the message. Either we(GOP) are smart and the Dems are stupid? Or we are proud and the Dems are stupid?? It looked to me like a psychiatric place…

And by the way, I don't know if its me but have I heard about the economy?? Hmm, I can't remember but I know I heard 9/11 more than the economy. For real, was up with that?? I guess money ain't that bad…

In that case, maybe the economy ain't that bad…well, at least according to them.

Rudy NYC   September 4th, 2008 9:19 am ET

Really? I thought I was the only one to notice.

How can you claim to want to work with the other party when so much, if not all, of your rhetoric is divisive? You rhetoric is aimed at making people choose sides, but you claim your goal is bring people together. Something is not adding up here.

"Fuzzy Values"

Charlotte   September 4th, 2008 9:19 am ET

Here we go again, compare to Bush, compare to Bush, compare to Bush..McCain will not be another Bush term and if that is all Obama has to say, he will cook his own Moose,er Goose.

Frank Canada   September 4th, 2008 9:18 am ET

If Palin doesn't believe in sex education for children at what point does she feel it would be proper to tell them it isn't really the stork that brings babies and no you can't get pregnant from kissing

She is tough though as is witnessed by her trying to have a librarian fired for not removing books Sara deemed to be offensive to her views and did everything to try and have her ex brother-in-law fired. Kinda reminds everyone of the Bush?Cheney/Libby circus.

Matt, Pittsburgh   September 4th, 2008 9:17 am ET

You can tell it was a great speech, even that little weasel Dingy Harry is squeeling. maybe we can sell him on ebay?

I love the fact that most liberals have fallen into the trap of comparing the Dems Pres canidate to the Reps VP candidate. If your argument is that "our presidential candidate is more experienced than your VP candidate", you've admitted defeat.

To the bloggers who are screaming bloody murder and denoucing Sarah Palin as a shrill attack dog, where were your outcries last week when "your" party was putting on their attack show? I didn't hear any substance in any of those speeches.

No way do I want an empty suit/ tax tax tax and tax some more Marxist running my country.

By the way Hussein has been in the senate for 3 years, not 4. and he has spent that entire time running for president.

I wish some news network would have the guts to go visit the seamy, dark back alleys of Hussein's 10 years entrenched in chicago democratic machine politics. I know they would find BO did a lot worse than trying to have his brother-in-law fired.

McCain/Palin
I'm in

Luis   September 4th, 2008 9:17 am ET

I love the lame Liberal attacks……..indicative of fear, insecurity and a realization that their Number One is afraid of our Number Two. Historic……..the false Messiah has to defend himself against our choice for VP……………………

Yet, these Liberals do not get it….and they want to lead the country…………into oblivion.

Come November, Obama and is merry band of lunatics will be on their way back to their caves……………………vote McCain or join the insane.

For the love of people   September 4th, 2008 9:16 am ET

I was and am deeply offended by Gov. Palin's speech. Here all eyes were on her and she could have delivered something that will comfort the America people about where our country will go. Instead, she degrades herself not Obama and present herself as the attack dog of the Good Ole Boys Club. Before the speech had a slim amount of respect for her, after the speech I would not vote for MCCain or her if they give me a million bucks. She was rude, definitely not a lady. I support Obama but she can't hold a candle to Hillary. Hillary has more integrity in her pinkie finger than in Sarah's whole existence. I am a woman, an American woman, and you will and could not ever earn my vote.

I pray that America will wake up and not be fooled by this below the belt, offensive, no merit, arrogant along with ignorant tactics.
