I have been a long time interested observer of our American political system. I am often amazed at the brazen, irrelevant, innane pronouncements made in the course of campaigns, and at how many of them are patently false and easily proven to be so.

It seems that the republican wordsmiths are the clear masters of this black art, and the success of their candidates clearly justifies perpetuation of the practice.

I believe that, in large measure, the republicans have met with success because they are shameless in their delivery of verbal stink bombs. Perhaps they believe that by saying something enough times and conjuring up a sufficient sense of outrage in the delivery will make it true. The latest example of this is seen in the party line concerning the qualifications of the vastly underqualified Sarah Palin.

Palin will never be accused of broken promises, of that you can be sure. Because she never said anything about her plans for the economy. I don't know what other people think they heard, but I heard, but I heard nothing. Palin and the rest of the republican party are going to need those hunting rifles to get votes.

Lets really look at the experience comparison:

Obama:
B.A in political science from Columbia University, with a specialization in international relations
J.D. in Law from Hardvard, graduated magna cum laude; President of the Harvard Law Review
12 years (92-04) teaching constitutional law
7 years State Senator: sponsored more than 800 bills
4 years Senator for Illinos, a state with 12.8 million people
Palin:
Bachelor's in journalism from University of Idaho
4 years Wasilla City Council (8000 people)
6 years Wasilla mayor (8000 people)
1 year "Ethics Commissioner of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission"
20 months governor of a state with 660,000 people

Do the Republicans really think we're so stupid that we would believe Palin is more experienced than Obama? Give me a break…

This sarcasm would help when she finds herself next to Putin or Olmert or Merkel given 72 year old McCains health. At least we know Obama's world view, opinion on Iraq wince 2003 when he informed us it was the wrong war and to finish the war in Afganistan and caputre Osama, and we have seen him stand toe-to-toe with those leaders. Being an attack dog, great speech reader will not help in those real life situations. Country First!

Luis,

The only fear being mention is the Fear mongering tactics of your republican party. They used it in 04 and are trying to use it again. I have a question for you, Do you know what Palin's policies are about fixing this economy your great Commander in Cheif left us in, What about Health Care or College, all she did was attack and use weak one liners that you probably thought was funny, YOU REPUBLICANS DON'T GET IT your 8 years in control of this counrty put us in this mess yet you think another 4 or 8 will change it. Einstein once said "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." You republicans make me sick, instead of putting some kind of substance all you know how to do is attack, but thats ok when the dabetes start we'll see who's going to be left with their tales between their legs, good luck on the rest of the election because for the next 8 years you're going to see how a country should be run. Sadly for you it's not going to be one of your beloved republicans who have no plans exept wars and deficits will hopefully one day stop taking money from these lobbyist and think about the country before their wallets.

I for one support women keeping up with the big boys and i look for integrity and substance in a person. The RNC attach dogs last night was very tasteless and the mockery was horrible. I give Huckabee the most respect for not stooping as low as his counterparts. Yet still i didnt hear anything on the issues all i hears was the same divisive speeches that has torn Washington apart and not take care of the issues that we the American people care about. SAD SAD SAD.

I`m an old line moderate Republican and I cannot accept this " new branch of the party ( Neo-Cons). They are leading this country down the wrong path both fiscally and idiologically.--------- Sadly, I`m just waiting to see the old " It`s the Economy, Stupid" bumper stickers appear again !!!!!

As a Democrat, I watched the speech. While I'll admit it was what she needed to do for the base, it still answer any questions for me. She talked about Obama's "lack" of plan, but she didn't lay out the Republican plan or any parts of it. I only heard the economy addressed one time and that was when she talked about energy. But even that was in the context of what Alaska has done to help. She talked about taxes in the same way that all Republicans talk about taxes, and that is to try to paint Obama as a tax and spend.

President Bush has grown the government more than any other president in history (Democrat or Republican), but yet Republicans still talk about small government. In my opion, this speech, while it shows Gov Palin's grit, showed me the same stuff that Republicans accuse Obama of - style, but no substance. Again, for the base, she did her job.

Now she has to face the media (which BTW she's not given one interview since the announcement). Hopefully the media will ask the real questions, not about the daughter, that's their issue, not mine. I want to hear her answer questions on Pakistan, Iraq, Afghanistan (which was not mentioned in her speech). I want to hear her answers on foreign policy. I also want to know her views on creationism or evolution. I want to know whether she supported the bridge to nowhere before she was against it. I really want to know whether she used her office to try and get somebody fired (ethics). Those are legitimate questions and has nothing to do with smears. Its not questioning her qualifications, but rather her knowledge and judgement (the same things Republicans accuse Obama of lacking).

The jury is out, let's wait and see. BTW - the speech had a lot of inaccuracies.

THere are only 2 words heard during the DNC: 9 and 11. No substance, no real issues. I still have no idea what they want to do with this country other than go to war. THey want to spread more fear. Some will buy into it, most of us won't this time.

McCain/Palin-- thanks but not thanks.

A very good speech without one single positive proposal.
It's the ECONOMY stupid!
As Obama said, this election is about US not about HE. Keep the attacks on, GOP, you will soon find who WE prefer.. the one that at least has some fresh ideas.
No to 4 more Bush/McCain years!

Obama/Biden 08 and 12!

How ironical, that a mere Gov. who's spent time manipulating her position and abusing power want to compare herself with a Stand up Harvard Mogul gone Senator? He was head of Law Review in Harvard - that is not actual responsibilities? He is the Senator - I guess that is tough for Sarah to comprehend, that it has a defined JOB DESCRIPTION. He woulda sought a Great Post after Harvard, but he CHOSE to work with the Average American, while Palin is busy trying to Exploit the polar bears, with a mere Bachelors Degree??

I am English and have been following the Election on CNN with huge interest. Congratulations on your terrific coverage.
However I am bewildered by the discussion on the difference in 'expertise' between Governor Palin and Obama. Recently we, in England and Europe, watched in admiration Barack Obama's recent foreign tour, where he met the heads of government in the EU and many other countries - and was received and accepted as a wise and clever statesman - and an egual. He has talked to many members of the G 8 and has visited many of the countries that have trouble spots in the rest of the world. The only comment from the Republicans was that this was a celebrity cult.
It seems a knowledge of foreign policy is not a priority or qualification for the Republicans - but to me the fact that Obama has met and been accepted by so many other world leaders, does give him a great advantage in the experience stakes and equips him far better for President - with all the world problems - than Governor Palin - who seems to have met no foreign leaders and has no experience of that sort at all..
I would find that it very alarming - with her total lack of contact with any leaders outside America - if she were suddenly to find herself taking over the Presidency.

I am English and have been following the Election on CNN with huge interest. Congratulations on your terrific coverage.
However I am bewildered by the discussion on the difference in 'expertise' between Governor Palin and Obama. Recently we, in England and Europe, watched in admiration Barack Obama's recent foreign tour, where he met the heads of government in the EU and many other countries – and was received and accepted as a wise and clever statesman – and an egual. He has talked to many members of the G 8 and has visited many of the countries that have trouble spots in the rest of the world. The only comment from the Republicans was that this was a celebrity cult.

Its great the Repbulicans are giving the Clintons such great material for their part in the campaign. eg Its the Economy Stupid.

Love the attack on community organisers whom are generally volunteers. Guess might be a few less in McCain Palin campaign offices.

Lies re Taxes. Easy to refute too. At what income level do the McCain tax cuts come in and how do you qualify for them.

Yes Obama is going to raise taxes if you are a Corporation or Wealthy.

How is Obama going to pay for most of his promises. Stopping the economic vandalism of the War in Iraq

Palin's speech was very well executed; it will set up McCain to give a unifying speech and make him look Obama-esque.
Mock Obama's rhetoric all you want, but don't turn around and get McCain doing his own, less-poetical version.
If you're going to be straight talk - be straight talk.
Either look at your cake or eat it.

It's one thing to deride charisma, but to do it in such a way to affirm your own lack of charm is petty and pathetic.

"If you have no plans, have no excuses for 1 year debt in history, banks failing every day, $10 billion a month on Iraq, lack of creditability in the world, and you have a bunch of freinds who made millions off the war, all you can do is JOKE and LAUGH about the other guy that is trying to fix the issues.

Politics of old "

Talk about politics of old, didnt the DNC drag out Carter? If Obama has been trying to fix the issues, why does he no-vote in the Senate? He has not tried to fix anything.

The media is so biased it is getting mnore and more blatanbt with each election and almost on a daily basis. Here in Nevada, all local channels pre-empted programming to run the Democratic convention for all 4 days. Not one did this dor the Republican convention. WE can only watch it on cable....CNN or FOX. This morning on the local news channel, they even did a story trying to blast a recent McCain commercial. Unbelieveable. Journalism is not journalism these days.
I will say one thing for Palin, she had a good speech writer.
Other than that she didn't impress me, she is certainly no Hillary
Clinton. I don't want to hear about her soccer mom days or her
PTA experience. And by the way she DID vote for the bridge to nowhere.Look at her 17 year old daughter and compare to Chelsey
Clinton. There is no comparison.

Palin "hit a nerve" because she was so sarcastic and so "cute." The woman has major problems in her family, in her governing style, in her lying, her pastor-it goes on and on. And we're supposed to "fall in love" with the new "rock star." Sorry, there is little about her to love.Maybe republicans like the pit bull style...I found it nauseating.
The difference between her speech and Biden's was that he was stating facts about the current administration and McCain's ties to it. She was going off on the half-truths and outright lies that the McCain campaign has been using for months. (Can someone in the campaign please "FACT CHECK" before you write a speech?) Had she gone out and told what THEY intend to do, and been positive, she may have been likable. There was absolutely no attempt to win over anyone not already Republican. That is why this Hillary Dem will stay with the party with a plan...and stay away from the evangelical pit bulls.

May I add one other thing. It is a bold face lie to say Obama has not sponsored any legislation in both the state and US senates. I suggest you go to the web sites for IL State Senate and the US senate and research. Of course, you can go straight to the Obama site, but I guess the negative republicans wouldn't believe it if it's on his site.

How can the McCain campaign falsely throw around the "arrogant" label? Last night was the epitome of arrogance, exasperating their hypocrisy.

Obama and Biden talk about bringing the country together: Independents, Republicans, and Democrats alike.

Eight is enough of this Bush/Rove-style division.

Boy. That sure was a lot of hate last night!
Unfortunately, Karl Rove has hijacked the republican brand and turned them into hate filled people. Is this what we want for America?

If she had actually attacked Democrat policy, that would have been one thing, but she chose to attack the person and as an Obama Devotee, I'm a little taken back by the tone of her attacks. I felt like I was listening to Karl Rove, Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh last night.

Great speech though!

As a 35 year old female I am extremely offended by Sarah Palin. She has done absolutely nothing for womens rights. For example, the right to choose, paid maternity leave like every advanced nation in the world, equal pay, health care for single moms and families. What has she done? She intends instead to throw us back into the stone age where the Republican Party has kept us for the past 7 1/2 years.

If you're a female and think she's your choice, be aware, be very aware. Your tax paying dollars will be paying for the full time care of her children and grandchildren. Meanwhile you'll still have to work and take of your own kids full time with no tax paying or government help.

I have one thing to say, the GOP convention showed itself as an exclusive, separatist organization. There was not one thing reflective of the diverse cultures in this country. It was like America walking backwards...

For many hard-working, weary Americans, their image and speeches shut out millions of us who do not look or sound like them. They do not represent me.

Same message, new messenger. The only problem Palin will encounter is that by lying about her own record and Obama's while ripping everything from community organizing, the environment, big cities and the media, her dishonesty has left her WIDE open for a hammer job. That wasn't a speech - it was a hateful rant. Nothing whatsoever of substance, nothing regarding what she would actually do, and nothing about why she's worth our votes. Basically, it was pathetic, and this is from a registered Independent with no party affiliation whatsoever.

Aren't we all tired of this? Contrast this hubris with last week's message of unity, positivity and hope and I think we will see where America's mind really is come November. Disgusting display.

Palin gave a great speech. Nothing of substance, but she looked great. Definately the candidate I'd most like to date. Will she ever be forced to answer any of the following questions:

1. Ms. Reformer: why did you hire a lobbyist to get pork for your town if you're against pork?

2. Why were you for the Bridge to Nowhere before you were against it?

3. Will Alaska give back all the pork it's received under your watch?

What about the issues? If McCain wins the election, we're headed for a Great Depression! The Republicans didn't address the failing econmy, or the gas prices. Substance was lacking!

The McCain campaign has only permitted Sarah do to an interview with People magazine on the subject she thinks she knows....family (stay tune; if you thought the inquiry had the dirt on the Edwards family just watch what they do to the Palins)

Sarah will stumble when the tele prompters are turned off...and the speech writers are no where to be found.

Sarah has a 4yr degree from 20 yrs ago just as myself however the Obama/Biden campaign will chew her to pieces when she has to speak about other countries, world leaders, terriorists and she will need the help of all her children just to identify the 50 states on the map.

SARAH THERE IS NO CRYING OR WHINING IN POLITICS. SEE YA AT THE DEBATES.

Shw=e kicks butt and is more qualified than Obabm to be POTUS. He is scared of her and she is #2 slot. She received more votes as MAyor than Biden recived as a presidential candidate. You dems are crying so hard because you're scared. How obvious are your juvenile attacks. She has made this a real race, Obama's coranation is in jeopardy!

As an unaffiliated voter, I'll just say that I found her speech quite unsettling. I wanted to be made comfortable with this unknown quantity, and instead she came off as divisive and hateful. I realize that appeals to the party's base, but it wasn't a good first impression.

I was so outraged by Rudy 9/11's attack on Obama last night that I didn't watch the rest of the speeches. Sounds like I missed more of the same. I was afraid Sarah Palin might actually have some good ideas about healthcare, education, the economy and the mortgage crises. Come to find out she talked about lipstick. One giant step backwards for women everywhere.

Here's the GOP solution:

Healthcare . . "that's what emergency rooms are for . . "

education . . . "more private and charter schools . . let the public school system fail because we don't need it . ."

Higher education . ." as long as our kids can go to college, who cares about your kids"

war in Iraq . . ."as long as our kids don't have to go there to fight, who cares about your sons and daughters who join the military to try to get access to higher education"

And to constantly refer to Barack as Hussein? If you're constantly trying to make that reference, then enough said. And for her to say troops going to Iraq was a task from God? Give me a break. Ask actual troops how they felt it was a task from God? And as for being pro-life? So it's so bad for a woman's right to choose? But yet it's so okay to have killed many innocents overseas and only get a slap on the wrist? I'm sure a pregnant woman was probably killed over there at some point. But that's right, they're not American, so it's still okay. But yet, liberals are the ones that need to open their eyes, okay...

It is quite clear that the republicans have no plans to change america for the better. All they have done at their conventions so far is talk bad about Obama and make community organizer sound like a dirty word. It's time to talk about the issues. If you don't have a plan then you attack seems to be the motto. I'm supporting Obama/Biden at least they have a plan.

Let's see......the Dimocratic Nominee feels he needs to attack the Republican choice for VP. Sounds like there are a couple of issues here:

Obama continues the sexist treatment he lavished on Billary, because he feared her and now fears Palin.

The "experience" argument is one he cannot win. The Liberal media and his surrogates will spin it, but bottom line. Obama is an empty suit.

Nice choice DNC, nice choice
