Jesse Jackson.
Jesse Jackson.

CHICAGO, Illinois (CNN) - The Rev. Jesse Jackson has been hospitalized after complaining of stomach pains, a spokeswoman for Northwestern Memorial Hospital said Thursday.

Hospital representative Latoya Porter said Jackson admitted himself around 3 p.m. CT on Wednesday.

She did not have an update on his condition but said he was having tests Thursday morning.

Jackson, 66, a long-time civil rights activist, had been in Atlanta, Georgia, working on behalf of the presidential campaign of Sen. Barack Obama.

No matter what your opinion is of Mr. Jackson, he is a civil rights legend. Beyond that he is a human being. Save your bile and become a speechwriter for the GOP.

Be well Jesse.

hick   September 4th, 2008 5:18 pm ET

the Lord works in mysterious ways. will pray for your health, and know that GOD will forgive what you said about senator obama.

fella from Chicago   September 4th, 2008 5:18 pm ET

We in Chicago are surprised that Jesse developed stomach problems. Usually that's a symptom of someone who's under pressure or duress of some sort. For a man who's never held a job, I'm surprised it's his stomach that's giving him problems and not hemorrhoids for sitting on his butt all these years.

jim   September 4th, 2008 5:18 pm ET

Get well soon. We want to see you smiling and waving to say that you are okay.

I wish Jesse a speedy recovery. Politically Jesse Jackson is almost a relic. Still, but for Jesse and folks like him there would be no Barack Obama or, for that matter, Hillery Clinton or......even Sarah Palin. He played an important part in this nation's development. Maybe not as important as he thinks sometimes but important nevertheless.

May God bless him and restore his health.

Moses   September 4th, 2008 4:54 pm ET

I agree with Jackson, Obama needs to grow some balls.

Olav   September 4th, 2008 4:39 pm ET

To those who say: "he has stomach pains, so what".

He wouldn't be hospitalised if he there wasn't real concern about his health. Ulcers, cancers et cetera are far too common (and deadly) not to worry about them.

Let's hope Jesse Jackson, a hero to so many people, and a champion on their behalf, will be with us for a long time to come.

Olav   September 4th, 2008 4:35 pm ET

Like many others, I don't always agree with Jesse Jackson. But enough of that. As human beings we should always extend our best wishes to our fellow human beings who are ill and/or in pain. And we better be sincere about it too. Our words of solidarity should not be empty, ot they wouldn't mean anything.

Get well soon, Reverend, so we can disagree some more :-)

I was shocked at Sarah Palin's condescending attitude, she was totally unladylike in her behavior.I my opinion she does not represent the
values most women in this country. I question her family values, her
son is a high school drop out, her daughter is dating a man who is
openly a red neck. as a matter of fact on his facebook page. we
deserve better than that in the white house.

TODD   September 4th, 2008 4:22 pm ET

Jesus! Could some of you haters please tone it down for one minute and keep your bile to yourselves? Jesse isn't a perfect individual, and you don't have to heap praise on the man, but to actually wish death on him, and your lame, snide little remarks reveals more about you than it hurts him. Your God is watching; do you think He is amused?

By the way of the holy spirit, according to the word of God and he send his word to heal this is my prayer for the Rev. Jackson, may God bless he and his family.

Not Obama   September 4th, 2008 4:21 pm ET

Obama is not smart enough to distance himself from this man. Jesse Jackson is a racist plain and simple. This has nothing to do with the election except to try and steal the thunder from the RNC. Nice try Jesse.

Lola   September 4th, 2008 4:18 pm ET

Jesse Jackson, being a figurehead for the Black community should really watch himself, or duck out of the public eye. His slanderous comments are inappropriate and hurtful to his reputation. Yes, it is alarming that he was hospitalized, but maybe he should take it as an opportunity to re-evaluate his public image.

Felicia   September 4th, 2008 4:17 pm ET

Ya know, this article has NOTHING to do with Barack Obama. Jesse Jackson is Jessie Jackson. I hope he gets well and all, but I hardly see how this is news. Plus didn't Jesse Jackson just say some distasteful things about Mr. Obama lately? CNN you need to get it together and stop trying to be cute. Just because they are both black and "politicians" doesn't mean that one has anything to do with the other. I gotta say this, CNN is a hell of a lot better than FOX!!!!

I am not voting for John McCain because I don't like him. I think its a chemistry thing. There is something about him that I detest. I find Barack Obama more likeable and personable. He has mastered the english language with more dignity than McCain has. McCain is not a good communicator and because he is such a "kooky outsider like Palin" he is untrustworthy. Do you trust him taking us into the "forbidden third realm" of the "third party " which he politically flirts with. I am old fashioned and I like old fashioned politics.

At least Jesse has the courage to admit his stress that the revitalized GOP ticket has imposed on his plans. NObama and Biden have the same feeling, but they simply sent out their hatchet MEN to badmouth what any reasonable person would say was an admirable showing by Palin. If they really believed that McCain-Palin were weak opponents, they'd be back in Hawaii drinking tropical cocktails and having a good old laugh for themselves. Their reaction to Palin's surge defies their words. They are scared stiff and rightly so.

This is the same Jackson that wanted to remove Obama's manhood? If I were Obama, I'd have him as far away from my campaign (and my nether region) as possible. Not wishing him ill will but as a dem, I have lost all respect for him. I think his true side was shown in that interview clip and he is only out for himself and not the African-American community. Hope he gets well but it's going to take more than what he has shown for me to wish him success after his comments. Obama doesn't need him.

Why does this story make the ticker, but not this update on the Palin scandal:

"Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, the running mate for GOP presidential candidate John McCain, wrote e-mails that harshly criticized Alaska state troopers for failing to fire her former brother-in-law and ridiculed an internal affairs investigation into his conduct."

Don from California   September 4th, 2008 2:22 pm ET

Get better big guy. There are a lot of different political tensions in this race for the White House. One of those we didn't need was the way Jackson felt about Obama. However, both men said they're peace. I hope after seeing how bitter the republicans were last night, we see how easily it is to resort to petty politics. Let's use this moment to remind ourselves that are goals for America are closer than our differences.

I'm sure the "Reverend" is reviewing his life thus far and thinking about the day when he has to reckon with God Almighty. When a person is older and hospitalized, they have a lot of time to think about that.
