Axelrod took Palins speech in stride.

PITTSBURGH (CNN) – Senior Obama adviser David Axelrod appeared unfazed by Sarah Palin’s tough speech in St. Paul Wednesday night, telling reporters Thursday Barack Obama watched a bit of her speech and took it in stride.

“To be very honest with you, I don’t think he expected gingerly treatment,” Axelrod told reporters on the campaign plane. “I think he understands that they don’t really have a record to run on and this is what politicians do when they don’t have a record to run on.”

Asked if it was harder to respond to attacks from Palin because she’s a woman, Axelrod said they were happy to respond to any “blatant distortions of fact” and that despite selling herself as someone not from Washington, she’d do well there.

“She’s a skilled politician. As she proved last night she’s deft at going on the attack,” said Axelrod. “For someone who makes the point that she’s not from Washington, she looks very much like she’d fit in very well there. When you see how she brings these attacks, it all felt very familiar to Americans who are used to this kind of thing from Washington.”

As for the repeated attacks from speakers like Rudy Giuliani and Palin on the community organizing chapter of his life Obama often touts, Axelrod said he thought everyday people viewed the position as real work.

“It may not pay the millions of dollars Rudy gets for shilling for pharma but it’s significant work,” said Axelrod.

Filled with vile and hatred. A disgusting display last night. Fascism is alive and well in the GOP. Heil Palin.

I think she did a GREAT job! Obama and Biden have not said what "so called great" things they will do to help the economy. Obama does not even answer questions, he is a true politician, he just talks circles around questions without answering them! He SCARES ME!

mary j   September 4th, 2008 12:24 pm ET

Community organizers work from the heart, whether it is for local civic groups, clean water and energy groups, environmental groups, school kids, the homeless, battered women in crisis or any of the other issues that really matter all acoss America to the people who appreciate and benefit from hard work of such folks. Done just to make their lives better, without grabbing any political glory. Sarah Pallin, must have missed out on that phase of the important issues that matter before catching her sky-rocket ride to fame based on being the mayor of a really small town or a really big state with less voters than are even registered in my local county. Belittleing this work does not impress me. Hello? Good speech delivery, but more typical bit pull talk not about the issues that really are impacting Americans; all flame with no heat.

GN   September 4th, 2008 12:24 pm ET

Her speech finally convinced me to NOT vote for McCain. Today she is pointing her finger at Obama and belittles him. When elected, she will point her finger at us and belittle us. Moreover, she will point her finger at other nations and belittle them, too. Not a smart way to lead this country and get more allies. Not a smart way to attract female voters at all! She insulted a lot of them.

She needs an extensive training at Disney. Otherwise, she will make a lot of undecided voters to move away from McCain.

I found Palin's tone to be necessary to set the stage for this campaign. I believe that she would be facing larger criticism if she were timid and cordial.
I was not "sold" on any of the candidates, but I am glad to see someone standing up and asking a bigger question about each issue…HOW? It's one thing to give a well designed speech, however Obama has yet to show America how he will make his promises become reality.

marta   September 4th, 2008 12:24 pm ET

Please focus on the fact that Palin can not be an advocate of special needs children when she cuts the funding for special needs programs by 62 % in Alaska' schools. I am a special needs mom and she is far from the advocate that i want . MNSBC's coverage this morning is lumping all special needs mom in a category that will blindly vote for Palin because we identify with her. What I see is a mom who has chosen to put herself and her ambitions before that of her children. What I saw when her youngest daughter was holding the baby was not a cute moment , but a sad portrait of a child that knows too well how take care of another child because the mother is absent.

L   September 4th, 2008 12:24 pm ET

The fact that people are touting her speech as a success shows how dumb the American Public is becoming. All those Hillary supporters that claim that they like her now are not only rubbing Hillary's nose in poop but diminishing Hillary's legacy. Shame on all of you.

Mrs. Palin needs to be reminded that Jesus Christ was a community organizer and Pontius Pilate was a governor."

CJ   September 4th, 2008 12:24 pm ET

I was turned off by the misstatements and the low blows delivered by their new star performer. I think she did what she was suppose to do , but did not appeal to me personally because of the sarcasm, and of putting down community service. Also no real sustance , no plan on issues just tearing down .and saying because MCCain was in prison cell that makes him a better choice than a well educated community service US Senator who had made some ethics changes. But the GOP loves her because of the low blows, and McCain knows the truth!
I use to love the old John McCain , always said if he ran I would vote for him. But after this convention , its speakers have really turned me off!!! What happen to the maverick , he died and now in it place is just a shell of the man he was!

Palin runs a state with NO INCOME TAX but instead an oil fund kickback DIVIDEND CHECK mailed to all residents each year. She has no executive experience dealing with the #1 problem the next U.S. President will face: how to get the economy back on track while not imposing significant tax increases to pay for necessary programs. Obama doesn't have much experience, but at least what he does have isn't in a fantasy land where you don't have to worry about money.

Ken   September 4th, 2008 12:24 pm ET

Hey Goerge. Stop parroting what you hear on FoxNews and try thinking for yourself. Go read the record. He has done things both in the US Senate and back in Illinois. Now all this might not be enough for YOU, but to characterize his record as 'having done nothing' is just more of the sophmoric rhetoric we've come to expect from the
[R]ight.

And I must say you should be especially proud of YOUR VP candidate. She has done well for herself; only in America can an uber-mistress of the [R]ightwing trailer-trash be raised to celebrity status.

Duke   September 4th, 2008 12:23 pm ET

I think the Repugs have done well with this convention. They will continue to try to shift away from issues. These guys know they are in for an electoral drubbing and there really isn't anything they are going to be able to do about it. Wait until the America hears this woman's real views. She is way out on the fringe, far to the right of Bush or Cheney. It works for now, but wait a couple of weeks. The Repugs are done.

When a campaign is losing they attack the media. Don't think that the media is going to back down for long. They are going to truly vet Palin and expose her lunatic views.

Obama/Biden 08
and if not them then
W (shiesty) Bush / Dick (shoot you in the face) Cheney
I really do trust them more then I do McCain and especially Palin

Peter from Lansing MI   September 4th, 2008 12:23 pm ET

The worst she did was, diminishing the millions of community organizers and people in similar jobs; that will backfire so badly.
The GOP their new attack dog Palin are so out of touch, trying to divide this country because they have nothing else to run on. I am looking forward to Friday when the party of lies is finally over.

Brooke in PA   September 4th, 2008 12:23 pm ET

I loved her speech. She was brilliant. The only reason the Dems and media are whining is because they know it's over for them and they're scared. Well they should be considering they didn't nominate the very best possible candidate to run against the GOP and participated in the sexist attacks themselves against one of their own candidates. Now it's payback time.

Game over.

Jesus of Nazarath   September 4th, 2008 12:23 pm ET

I think it is unfortunate that the Republican party seen fit to throw Hockey Moms of the USA under the bus, just lumping them altogether . I would also like to say kids need both parents but babies need their mother.

RC   September 4th, 2008 12:23 pm ET

Her speach had Karl Rove all over it. Nuff Said!

Jim   September 4th, 2008 12:22 pm ET

I love the argument that she has foriegn relations experience because Alaska is close to Russia. Well most of my neighbors have kids. Using their logic I must be ready to be a father.

Come on. My cousin that plays video games online against kids in South Korea has more foriegn relations experience than her. And those that think that is a sexist comment, my cousin is a girl.

Charla2inTexas2   September 4th, 2008 12:22 pm ET

It turns out that this speech was written over a month ago for whom ever the VP pick was to be. They just filled in the blanks with some personal facts about Sarah "Buffoon" Palin.

Sarah Palin is upstaging Sen. McCain more than anyone else. The way she touts her Executive experience cast doubts on if McCain has enough, if any, experience himself.

MOMS AGAINST SARAH PALIN   September 4th, 2008 12:22 pm ET

I was and am deeply offended by Gov. Palin's speech. Here all eyes were on her and she could have delivered something that will comfort the America people about where our country will go. Instead, she degrades herself not Obama and present herself as the attack dog of the Good Ole Boys Club. Before the speech I had a slim amount of respect for her, after the speech I would not vote for MCCain or her if they gave me a million bucks. She was rude, definitely not a lady or respected politician. I support Obama but she can't hold a candle to Hillary. Hillary has more integrity in her pinkie finger than in Sarah's whole existence. I am a woman, an American woman, and you will and could not ever earn my vote. I pray that America will wake up and not be fooled by this below the belt, offensive, no merit, arrogant along with ignorant tactics.

As a mother of two, one being a 3 month old, I could not imagine placing my love ones in the front lines of battle. It as if you praise yourself for having a special needs child. I saw the baby toss from person to person as if it was a football. As if they were saying, "It's your turn, no your turn." It was sickening how she paraded her family as a trophy won at the last Iron Man Snowsled Showt. Is this what we want representing America to other countries? I scream NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Her performance last night was despicable, appalling, arrogant and JUST PLAIN IGNORANT. You unjustly criticized a man that have only been gracious and respectful in his words for you and your family. He stood against the media ridiculing and judging your daughter being pregnant. That brings up another point, if you were on your JOB at home, would your child even be pregnant????? We all know that you give a child too much freedom at a time that they need guidance, all sorts of things can occur: teen pregnancy, drug abuse, alcholism, STD's. Ms. Palin claims to be an advocate for the renown "SOCIAL CONSERVATIVE MOVEMENT" that cherish the principles outlined in the BIBLE but all I heard WAS hate, avengence, arrogance far from humility and love that surrounds the principles of the church.

Before you preach to the choir take heed of your own sermons. I encourage mothers who were insulted by her speech, stand together and fight against this cynical BELOW THE BELT tactics. I am forming "MoMs Against Sarah Palin." Please let me know if you want to join the movement.

Oh Brother   September 4th, 2008 12:22 pm ET

Seriously – Sarah Palin, the book banning, hypocritical christian who abuses her power while her husband spends his time flaking out with BP or successionists? Um and then she sold out her daughter by parading her on tv with the bf as they are going to be married now (forget that they are like teenagers and will be divorced quicker than you can say hmf)…

Then she knocks community organizing? I'm sorry being mayor in an Alskan town no one has heard of and having your first term as governor fraught with political scandel somehow empowers you to be a serious "pitbull"??

LMFAO! Thank you Sarah Palin, you have delivered us a for sure Democratic administration! Love ya babe ;)

Edna, DE   September 4th, 2008 12:22 pm ET

The GOP must be crazy if they think I'm going to vote for a hotheaded old geezer and a Tina Faye look-a-like screeching at me for 4 years. No thanks, John and Tina–I'll take real change over John and his prom date.

She should get off the campaign trail and take care of business in her own house before she tells me what to do in mine.

vw   September 4th, 2008 12:22 pm ET

Yes, it was harder to respond to attacks from Palin NOT because she’s a woman but because what she said is the facts.

Sure, noone wants to belittle community organizer though OB DID deliberatly belittle the Mayor of a typical small city. However, to be honest, if you REALLY want to compare between the community organizer and the governer/mayor, the conclusions should be very clear about who has executive/administration experience, who has made more achievements, who has a better record, and who is ready to lead this country if elected.

Franklin   September 4th, 2008 12:22 pm ET

You Obamatrons sound scared, obvious by all the shrill comments you're posting. I think I can sum it up for you with two words… "truth hurts".

SEN OBAMA HAS CONTINUALLY TAKEN THE HIGH ROAD. PEOPLE WHO HAVE TO PUT DOWN OTHERS FOR PERSSON GAIN ARE FAR BEYOND MY ACCEPTANCE. SEN OBAMA WILL CONTINUE TO TAKE THE HIGH ROAD AND KNOWS WHERE HIS TRUST LIES.

Derrick - Texas   September 4th, 2008 12:22 pm ET

I'm sure Obama and Biden can handle themselves just fine-

What Palin needs to do is to stop ducking the media, and actually lay out the reasons she thinks she's qualified to be a sunburn away from the presidency.

I'm sorry, but ANY yokel can be a small-town mayor, and with Alaska's system of government, I could run that state from here.

The REAL issue here, is that McCain did a HORRIBLE job of vetting this woman, and we demand some answers. Are THESE thekinds of rash decisions we can expect from this man? God help us…

Central Scruitinizer   September 4th, 2008 12:22 pm ET

Hey 'Barb' I thought you REPUGS were going to leave family out of the politics. Oh wait …..sorry that was POTUS Obamas very conciderate and highly moral stance … sorry i confused you with a person of good moral standing

a d   September 4th, 2008 12:22 pm ET

The truth behind the Obama community organizer debate:

The only reason Obama became a community organizer was to shore up the appeal of his resume for his Harvard Law School application. This is the strategy of every applicant, who has ambitious goals. His motivation to serve as a community organizer was driven more by self-interest than that of the community’s interest. This is a 100% fact. So, stop griping about Palin’s attack on faux-community organizers like Obama.

Jack Jodell, Minneapolis, MN   September 4th, 2008 12:22 pm ET

Palin's just another Republican attack dog with nothing to run on. Let's come to our senses, folks: Do you really believe this shrill-voiced and immature hockey mom is capable of sitting at the table with Putin, Ahmedinijad, (or anybody else) and sizing them up or effectively and correctly dealing with them should John McCain die? Is this impulsive, shoot-from-the-hip person the one you want or trust to lead our military or have her finger on the nuclear trigger?

I DON'T THINK SO!!!!!

Palin displays none of the maturity, realpolitik knowledge, sophistication, or world view of Margaret Thatcher, Golda Meir, Indira Gandhi, Benazir Bhutto, or even Hillary Clinton.

Face it, fellow citizens: McCain showed VERY poor judgment in selecting Palin for VP. Kay Bailey-Hutchison, Susan Collins, or Elizabeth Dole would have been FAR better choices! Palin should return to her igloo.

edweena   September 4th, 2008 12:21 pm ET

Any Clinton supporter should see the very reason why Palin cannot win their votes. That woman is against EVERYTHING Hillary stood for. And experience wise? Sarah "PALE IN" comparison to Hillary.

A speech like that would have NEVER gotten Hillary 18 millions votes! NEVER! What makes the GOP think that they can buy these 18 millions with lies and no apparent solutons?

Jesse   September 4th, 2008 12:21 pm ET

I was listening to Rudy Giuliani speak before Palin came out and he said that McCain was looking towards the future…well, thats great and all but exactly how can he be looking towards the future whenever he can't even deal with the present?? The guy doesn't even know how to use the internet…maybe we're moving just a lil too fast for him.

mike in ohio   September 4th, 2008 12:21 pm ET

can anyone say PINOCHIO!!!
Palin is a puppet of McCains, that's why she can't speak to the media, she has no clue on the issues. They're scared that she's going to make a hugh gaffe.

david gillis   September 4th, 2008 12:21 pm ET

People please calm down Ms. Palin just read a speech written by the RNC to take the front page from DNC which John Mc is unlikely to do. This woman is from Alaska and probably has not been in the U.S. since Idaho University. She knows nothing of the U.S. or the people here and definitely nothing of the issues of importance here. The biggest thing in that state maybe dog sledding ,a hockey game or having a baby. This is not a National leader who can identify with the problems George Bush and this party has created. You economically "poor" republicans are being "fooled" by the rich ones again. They are giving you race hadred while they are lining their pockets with gold from the government-7 houses.

California Girl   September 4th, 2008 12:21 pm ET

Sorry, this woman does not belong on the VP ticket. No experience, no wisdom, just a hottie for the GOP to oogle and lust over. Those ole' dogs are desperate.

Matt   September 4th, 2008 12:21 pm ET

I know some one else who started out as a community Organizer, he never held any other position like a governor, senator or president, but was revered as Father of the Nation of that country. His name is Mahatma Gandhi.

Brendose, Oceanside CA   September 4th, 2008 12:21 pm ET

Palin,

Tell people that volunteer work is "meaningless"
Tell people that community organizers don't help and do not make a difference.

Then tell people you're happy to lose the election.

Tony in Michigan   September 4th, 2008 12:21 pm ET

catya   September 4th, 2008 12:21 pm ET

I cannot listen to that cartoonish voice of hers for very long, especially when she's dripping with sarcasm.

Hey CNN,

Are you gonna talk about how much she LIED yesterday in her speech? Just a thought…

W. T. F   September 4th, 2008 12:20 pm ET

The question remains, who is Sarah Palin? We now know she has good vision and can read a speech that was written for her but what else? Who is Sarah Palin and what is the Palin / McCain platform? What solutions are this two going to offer America? Those critical questions remain.

As a community organizer, I have had city coucilmen working for me. Not to mention mayors and Governors trying to get my support. Community organizers are your Volunteer Fireman, Neighborhood Watch, Council of Concerned Citizens, Food Bank Organizers, Neighborhood Cleanup, Aids Volunteers, Nursing Home volunteers, Meals on Wheels and etc. Many of these organization are funded by local churchs and citizens. To the GOP this may be a lowly position because it's a level many of them never deal with. That's why they believe that you are rich if you make 5 million or more, the rest of us can just eat cake.

roger dowdle, lockhart, Tx   September 4th, 2008 12:20 pm ET

In june of this year, she called the iraq war a task from god, instead of a folly from an idiot. Even Bush learned not to claim gods guidance in his decision to start a war for no reason other than personals glory (backfired). When he evoked god as a reason, the muslim world rected as if to another crusade and ended up with beheadings– is that what she wants? Even bush managed to learn not to refer to god in relation to the war, and if he could learn, then you would think anybody with half a brain could.

Olivia, NH   September 4th, 2008 12:20 pm ET

Tina Faye has not won me over. She can talk all the talk she wants, but she will never get one vote outside of conservative repugs. I think she was fooling herself and the American people on all that talk about the pipelines in Alaska. I didn't believe for one second she knew what she was talking about.

So it comes to this– real change, or superficial change. I'm betting on Barack and Biden.

O/B 08

Stella   September 4th, 2008 12:20 pm ET

As I posted yesterday, all she can do for McCain is attack, attack and attack some more. The speech she gave last night is exactly what I expected from her. McCain can't campaign on the issues so he does what the republicans are good at and known for: spread fear, hatred and most of all, divide the country. Good attack job Palin. Can't wait for the VP debates. The republicans are so out of touch that Biden will walk all over the Govenor of the Great State of Alaska. She'll only know how to attack. No substance whatsoever.

Bulldog   September 4th, 2008 12:19 pm ET

Palin is as divisive as they come. In Alaska she has a proven record of firing all those who disagree with her and replacing them with people who are puppets for her. Sound familiar? Yes that's right, the last 8 years of George Bush/Dick Cheney. MORE OF THE SAME.

Proud Female   September 4th, 2008 12:19 pm ET

I would have been more impressed if she actually discussed what she stood for instead of the usually ‘bully” rhetoric tactic. I was not impressed. Most of us “average” Americans should know the truth about what she stands for. Save us if she ever gets a hold of our Supreme Court. Bye-bye science, pro-choice, guns control and everything else. I guess what surprises me is I thought the Republicans stood for small government. All I see is “big daddy”.

Maureen   September 4th, 2008 12:19 pm ET

I am having doubts that the computer geeks running Obama's campaign –aka David Axelrod and kind–have it in them to get moving with a hard-hitting response to Republican attacks. They can't be afraid of Palin because she is a woman. Also they are relying too much on blogs and chatter on the internet. They need more strong response and attack in the main stream media. Where were the hard-hitting ads during the Republican convention? All I heard was the one about McCain's houses over and over again. Contrast that with the Republicans who had a new one out just about every day during our convention. Just talking about the issues won't be enough if the dem's don't get out in front of the Palin issue and the strong Republican attacks. Voters want someone who will show strength and face down bully-type tactics.

Miri   September 4th, 2008 12:19 pm ET

As a mother of two special needs children I am really offended by Palin using her special needs baby to garner sympathy. We special needs parents care about what you will do to help our children get the best education and opportunities they deserve. What has Sarah Palin ever done for the special needs children of this country? Before you call yourself the greatest advecate for special needs children you better have actually done something other than just give birth. Sarah Palin's special needs child is just a baby – this is the easy time. It gets tougher and much more challenging as they get older. School is a great challenge with special needs children. She will find out some day.

Having special needs children is both wonderful and challenging. I love my children with all my heart and wouldn't change a thing but it has not always been easy. There still many challenges ahead for them and I worry about them every day of my life.

Most special needs children need the public school programs because the private schools will not take them. The public school program is our only option. They have fine minds but need a more one on one approach which costs money. If Sarah Palin and John McCain really care then they would actually fund programs that help but they don't. They call them wasteful earmarks!

Sarah Palin is no advecate of special needs children. The media does not speak for me. As a mother of special needs children it doesn't matter to me if you have given birth to one or not. What matters is what are going to do to help them have the fullest lives they can in this country. I don't sympathy – I want the best for my kids and that takes money!

The Ladyr   September 4th, 2008 12:19 pm ET

Well saidn Axelrod. RNC claims Palin has more experience than Obama, what is she hiding it for!!

gm   September 4th, 2008 12:19 pm ET

IF ALL YOU CAN DO IS TRASH ANOTHER PERSON FOR PERSONAL GAIN I FEEL SORRY FOR THE PERSON MAKING DEROGITIVE AND UNTRUE COMMENTS. SARAH PALIN GAVE A GOOD SPEECH (WRITTEN BY SOMEONE ELSE) N0T MUCH IMPUT FROM HER. WHERE WERE THE COMMENTS ABOUT ANY OF THE ISSUES? ECONOMICS, THE WAR, HEALTH CARE, GLOBAL WARMING- HAS BEEN PROVED THAT IS MAN MADE,AND ON AND ON. YOU TALK ABOUT FLIP/FLOPS: THERE WERE NOTHING BUT NASTY COMMENTS COMING FROM THE GOP THAT SEN OBAMA WAS NOTHING BUT A ROCK STAR AND NOW SARAH IS THE ROCK STAR. THE DEMOCRATS THEME WAS FROM THE BEGINNING ABOUT CHANGE, NOW THE GOP IS ABOUT CHANGE. THE GOP CONTINUALLY SAID THE CAMPAIGNS SHOULD BE ABOUT THE ISSUES, NOW THEY SAY IT'S NOT ABOUT THE ISSUES BUT ABOUT PERSONALITIES. COME ON PEOPLE – WAKE UP.
THE PERSON, THE HONORABLE SEN BARAK OBAMA WHO HAS SAID TIME AND TIME AGAIN THAT IT IS ALL ABOUT THE PEOPLE AND TAKEN THE RIGH ROAD WILL BE OUR NEXT PRESIDENT.

robert   September 4th, 2008 12:18 pm ET

she looks like a hockey mom!!!!!! she needs to quit bring someone with experiacne and knowledge. all the speeches were written by GOP crooks for her to attack Obama/Biden. talk about issues not attacks.

Kevin Martin   September 4th, 2008 12:18 pm ET

She is the perfect puppet for McCain and his party!! I almost forgot about BUSH the Captain of the ship. Maybe if she was running for President she could steal votes, but after her smoke screen clears they will still have BUSH, CHAINEY,and McCAIN in one BIG HUDDLE with McCain being the puppet master!!!!

p.s. She would make an excellent talk show host with her wittiness

Haas   September 4th, 2008 12:18 pm ET

I'd like her to go on Hardball and answer some real questions. The McCain camp isn't letting the media get close to her. I don't don't care how much they brief her, she knows nothing about what's going on in the world and she don't have solutions for fixing the economy. All they can do is attack, attack, attack.

Natasha/Ohio   September 4th, 2008 12:18 pm ET

don't care about how Sarah Palin or John McCain take care of their families. I care about how their policy choices affect my family and millions of other Americans.

McCain and Palin get their health insurance paid for by the government (hers in Alaska and his in Washington). Yet they oppose giving the nearly 46 million uninsured Americans the same access to affordable health care.

John McCain's kids don't have to worry about paying for college. Yet he has opposed every single education support program to help others.

McCain and Palin say they will stand up to oil companies. Yet the only energy policy they support gives millions of dollars in tax breaks to oil companies to do more drilling and he has opposed every piece of federal legislation to explore alternative fuel sources.

McCain and Palin say they will revamp how Washington does business. Yet his campaign is filled with lobbyists and she has cooperated with Sen. Ted Stevens in funneling federal money for useless projects in Alaska for years. And McCain and Palin have no solutions for Americans worrying about their jobs in a fragile economy.

McCain and Palin want us to leave their families alone. Yet they want to make rules for our families by eliminating our right to make our own choices over abortion, eliminate our access to family planning education or domestic partner benefits, and our freedom from discrimination.

They want to control what our kids learn in school about sex and about science. In short, through the policies they promote and the judges they support, they want the government to have more control over our private lives than at any time in history.

McCain and Palin now say their campaign is about change, too. Yet the only real change they have proposed is a change from a suit to a skirt in the vice president's office and one man fighting a misplaced war for another in the Oval Office.

That seems to me to be the right reason to oppose them in November. It's not the process or the people, it's what they represent. This unconventional choice of a vice presidential nominee by John McCain won't result in a win in November, because McCain and Palin are the wrong choice for the country

I love hearing these negative opinions from these democratic liberal nutjobs. Palin's speech last night was a wake up call for Osama/Biden. I can't wait to hear a debate between an old time Washington liberal insider, and a proven reformer who isn't an insider. Osama-bi-Den don't represent change and I don't understand how intelligent people can keep buying that argument. McCain went out and got an outsider, a reformer, and a woman all in one. I know this pisses those hippies off.

After Palin's speech last night, I bet Osama is pissed as hell he didn't pick Hillary as his running mate. Awesome speech Sarah!! Senator McCain just got my vote!!!!

Oh boy....   September 4th, 2008 12:18 pm ET

REPUBLICAN = ATTACKS…. PALIN DELIVERED THE SPEECH WELL BUT NOTHING UNEXPECTED CONSIDERING THEY SPENT 4 DAYS CRAFTING IT AND EVEN ADDED A FORMER BUSH SPEECH WRITER.
YES, THIS IS CHANGE THAT WE CAN BELIEVE IN. BUT I DOUBT IT.
MORE ISSUES AND LESS ATTACKS. SCARE TACTICS WOULD MAKE ME AFRAID JUST PISSED.

Repubs are now telling us what they are going to do in the next 4 years of a 12 year term. Why didn't they do it before? They had the presidency and control of both houses 2000-2006 and did nothing but hurt this country.

Marian Ward   September 4th, 2008 12:18 pm ET

About the discussion Soledad O'Brien brought up today, regarding the "working mom" issue: if you make the decision as a woman to bring children into the world, especially a high-needs baby like Trig, you must also be there for them.

Yes, many moms work, as Soledad rightly pointed out. (I did, but I worked from home — less money, but I was there for my daughter.) BUT, they realign their lives with those kids in mind if they have the choice (i.e., family economics not a determinant). Palin has that choice, and should have postponed political ambition until those kids were raised. They are her job and responsibility, as she chose to give birth to them. I realize her husband is actively involved, but that's not "mom".

If memory serves, Soledad has several times made career choices based on her four kids' existence in her life. So, no, I don't think it's unfair to bring the issue up. Obama and Biden both have structured their public lives around their kids, so this is not just a women's issue. It's a responsibility issue. There is no substitute for the actual parent's presence in their children's lives.

This is a fair issue to delve into, and it does not surprise me that it is working moms who are bringing it up.

Get your fact straight George. Obama was a state senator for 7 years in illonois where voting present is an acceptable and recognized political stategy. Everyone there is encouraged to use it in certain situations. Also He has been a US Senator on the Foriegn relations committee. He and Richard Lugar authored a bill to get control of Loose nukes around the world. He also sponsored reform legislation which stopped the lavish free dinners and other gifts coming from lobbyist to Senators.

So she can speak from a teleprompter….big deal!

We'll see what kind of substance she has during the VP debate, when the answers aren't written down for her!

By the way – that's the reason that she's not doing interviews right now – the Repubs are afraid she'll be asked some real questions about foreign policy, Darfur, the education system, healthcare, her earmarking, or her political scandals.

They still need to GIVE her the answers! LOL.

sometimes when an attack is so filled with angry steam and no substance its best not even attempt to respond.

Its a very weak speech, just an attack speech. So being mayor of a small town where the biggest crisis is bob at the bar got fired from his job or to sign legislation that would allow the local waffle house to expand its parking lot equates to more experience than a chicago man "whom can draw both white and black crowds" and a strong community organizer who can get work done on a limited budget and accomplish great things on volunteer money?

seriously, look up Wasilla. this woman doesn't have any experience with variety, unless the typical american is a construction worker.

Completely offended feminist   September 4th, 2008 12:17 pm ET

It was SO rude and demeaning for Palin to patronize Obama's experience as an organizer. For any of us who have organized, for any of us in the human services, we all ought to be offended. We ARE the people who ARE doing something. We ARE change. We see it everyday in that woman we help keep her mortgage, that single father we help find day care, that soldier we counsel who has PTSD. WE ARE THE ONE'S DOING ANYTHING.

As a woman and feminist, I am SO sick of hearing about how questioning Palin's experience is sexist. Further, I do not believe that people questioning her as a mother and balancing having children and the Veep position is either. SHE IS THE ONE WHO IS CLAIMING TO BE A TRADITIONALIST ON FAMILY VALUES. No one on the left said she was doing that. Well, like it or lump it, she should be criticized because she is being a hypocrite to those family values positions she is running on and claims to support and uphold. That's a reality.

Sarah Palin is a feminist as much as Lieberman is a Democrat.

Obama:
B.A in political science from Columbia University, with a specialization in international relations
J.D. in Law from Hardvard, graduated magna cum laude; President of the Harvard Law Review
12 years (92-04) teaching constitutional law
7 years State Senator: sponsored more than 800 bills
4 years Senator for Illinos, a state with 12.8 million people

Palin:
Bachelor's in journalism from University of Idaho
4 years Wasilla City Council (8000 people)

1 year "Ethics Commissioner of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission"
20 months governor of a state with 660,000 people

Palin was outstanding. I felt the Democratic convention was all glitz and Hollywood. What I saw last night was down to earth and is a refreshing change from all the Washington elitism. Look, I'm all for excited opinion, but fully all-capped statements? Really?

That said, I think Palin delivered a solid speech. And though I'm 100% behind Obama, it's always good to hear both sides of the story – and that's what most of these engagements are, until we get down to actual debates.

Lisa   September 4th, 2008 12:16 pm ET

Deb   September 4th, 2008 12:16 pm ET

Sara Palin's speech, which was probably scripted by Karl Rove, catered to the audience to whom it was delivered. Rudy Guillianni was a total abnoxious jerk. His laughing and belitteling remarks about Obama were ridiculous and not at all factual. He thought he was doing standup and got lost in the moment. The whole convention to date has been all about the attach and nothing at all on the issues. However, it will be interesting to see how the McCain/Palin camp react when the attacks from the democrats start coming. Will the call foul and call sexism?? As far as I am considered she went into the ring swinging so…sorry sweetheart but the counter punch will be delivered soon and it will sting.

lies, distortions and no plan on their own. In addition to do they mock the many volunteers and community workers that work hard daily to help others and they claim to value service. Maybe they only value military service as the only service there is in this country but then again they don't value it that much since they seem to think funding for veterans programs is big government and too much spending. Give me a break repugs u need to wake up and understand that people won't fall for the same crap we've had in the last 8 years.

This convention has really insulted my intelligence. First of all it's a room full of white people who think they are better and more "American" than others – makes me sick. They always talk about their high morals, but yet all they do is put anyone who does not agree with them down. I am so insulted as an American to be told only the Republicans put Country First.

And I agree with a lot of folks on this blog – why won't she talk to the media?? I want to see her start answering some tough questions from the media – that will be interesting. I heard on one of the cable news shows that they will only be letting her talk to small town media. Why? What are they afraid of? When they start asking her about foreign affairs, I want her to ask them. She is going through all of McShames policies and news for the last year to even understand what's going on in world. And I'm sorry, but does she really understand what's going on in mainstream America.

Even if Obama proposed to increase my taxes, since when do we expect to get something for nothing? I would be more than happy to have my taxes increased if it will mean reducing the national debt, paying for universal healthcare, better schools throughout the country.

When I go out to an all you can eat buffet for only $10.00, I should not expect the same service that I might get a Ruth Chris Steakhouse. It's simple math people, we get what we pay for. But I know, everyone wants something for nothing.

As a community organizer, I took exception to her disregard for such work. She's snide and sarcastic. I don't like it from men in politics and I don't like it from her either.

And CNN: why are you closing the comments sections every time all the comments are against Palin? You ask for comments from your readership, but you close down the links when you don't like the way the comments are leaning. And the last three comments I have posted have been stricken from the ticker.

Why don't you want to hear from your readership? I'm now looking for a new site to frequent. CNN is afraid of the Reps cries of 'liberal media' and has sold itself out.

And your Rah Rah Republicans coverage last night was laughable. I'm sure the corporate right wing Reps who own CNN were happy with it, but I left for CSpan part way through your coverage. Where were the Dems last night? I had to listen to Giuliani during the Dems convention. Equal and unbiased news? I think not.

When you all stop sighing over Sarah Palin's sniping, belittling speech – belittling of anyone who has decided to get involved in politics, volunteer in our communities, or – God forbid – listen to Barack Obama – perhaps you'll note that the Reps still have offered no answers to the pitiful situation the USA is in.

I'm hurting and I need help! Tax breaks for oil aren't going to help me. Do McCain and Palin think that big business is going to share its insane profits with the rest of us?

God, is it a bad dream? Someone tell me it's a bad dream and I'll wake up soon…

You don't need to be a skilled politician to know Obama has no proven record. The Dem. debates and even Joe Biden the VP nominee as one of those debators proved that when he said Obama wasn't qualified. How can one vote for a ticket when the your VP select doesn't think his own nominee is qualified. This doesn't send a strong message to voters that they will work together as a team for us Americans.

If your family mirrors Palin’s family to a tee- You’re in Luck!!!
Palin will help families facing the challenges of raising children with mental development issues. She has your back!
The BIG ONE she slashed State Funds that would provide teen mothers a place to live. Her daughter doesn’t have to worry about a place to live. Maybe, Palin’s views will change on this issue with recent events surrounding her own daughter.

Palin’s Record shows that she:
Raised Taxes as Governor
Supported the Bridge to Nowhere before she was against it
Pursued Pork Barrel Projects as Mayor
Banned books from the Library

She believes The War in Iraq is a task from God

People vote on Issues that affect everyday living. Gas and food prices are sky high. People are losing their jobs and homes. We are a nation in debt fighting for Iraq’s Democracy- if you believe that is what the war is being fought for. This isn’t what America stands for.

McCain voted 90% the same as Bush. A name change to McCain in The White House will not yield different results in our lives.

My God, I am not an Obama supporter, but isn't this man a child of God like all of us. America, we have to stop this. There's too much going on here, our soldiers are dying for an unjust war, people are losing their homes and their jobs, everything is collasping around us, and the only thing that we can do is to crusify Obama. We are better than this. Please let's get back to the things that concern us as a nation. After last night I am seriously considering giving Obama my vote. For he is the only one in this whole campaign that has remained positive and have taken the high road.

LilRedFox   September 4th, 2008 12:14 pm ET

The theme last night was consistent — nasty, snotty, and sarcastic. Much of what was said was not only exaggerated but completely false, for the sake of mockery and disdain.

Palin was petty and nasal and cutely wrinkled her nose while delivering one zing after another, and Giuliani got so carried away he came across as a drunken comedian at a political dinner show.

Nothing they said had anything to do with what America needs, just a bunch of old tired hate-mongering.

Trill   September 4th, 2008 12:14 pm ET

I happened to catch her view/plan for energy, and I completely supported it. I even thought "wow, maybe I can see my self voting for a McShame/Palin ticket". However, the more she talked about it, the more I thought it sounded vaguely familiar… then it hit me, Rove's, uh, Bush's, um, sorry, I mean Palin's speach writer snaked that "plan" from Obama. Let's compare:

Obama – "As president, as president, I will tap our natural gas reserves, invest in clean coal technology, and find ways to safely harness nuclear power. I'll help our auto companies re-tool, so that the fuel-efficient cars of the future are built right here in America."

Rove/Palin – "Starting in January, in a McCain-Palin administration, we're going to lay more pipelines, and build more nuclear plants, and create jobs with clean coal, and move forward on solar, wind, geothermal, and other alternative sources."

I am sure behind all of the attacks on the Dems, there may have been some substance to her speech, who could tell. All I know, is that for 8 years the US has been divided right down the middle, thanks to the tactics of Rove and his puppets W and Dick (now we can add Palin to this list). After last night, I have come to the conclusion, that the same divisive tactics used to put W in office are going to be used again… do we really want 4 more years of failed Rove/W/Dick policies?

Dee Dee Lynn   September 4th, 2008 12:13 pm ET

The Republicans have said that this campaign "is not about issues" so why would they run on them?

Why, particularly, when calling Washington "liberal" (even though its been run mostly by conservatives for the past 8 years) and blaming the media (even though McCain calls them his "base") get people to forget about issues.

How about the media does its job, and reports the fact that Ms Palin has a history of going after earmarks, and is on record (even recorded) praising the Alaska congressional delegation for obtaining more earmarks than most other states? How about if the media reports that not only did Sarah Palin support the bridge to nowhere, she did not feel compelled to return the $220 million earmarked for it when the project was cancelled?

I guess accepting $220 million blank check for having ties in Washington is not the part of the politics of self-interest Palin criticized.

I hope Sarah Palin does not expect "ginger" treatment either (after all, she called herself a bulldog and has said she thinks "whining" about sscrutiny and calling it sexism is out of line.

Grimes P   September 4th, 2008 12:13 pm ET

PALIN: "I have protected the taxpayers by vetoing wasteful spending … and championed reform to end the abuses of earmark spending by Congress. I told the Congress 'thanks but no thanks' for that Bridge to Nowhere."

THE FACTS: As mayor of Wasilla, Palin hired a lobbyist and traveled to Washington annually to support earmarks for the town totaling $27 million. In her two years as governor, Alaska has requested nearly $750 million in special federal spending, by far the largest per-capita request in the nation. While Palin notes she rejected plans to build a $398 million bridge from Ketchikan to an island with 50 residents and an airport, that opposition came only after the plan was ridiculed nationally as a "bridge to nowhere."

Be afraid, be very very afraid.

Amused visitor to America   September 4th, 2008 12:13 pm ET

Watching the US elections is greater than a soap opera.

also disappointing for someone who had swallowed the American propaganda of above board, all inclusive, liberty defending democracy.

when the chips are down, the level of american myopic, self centered double faced leadership knocks my socks off!

in my 42 yrs i have never seen such evil expressed in "political terms". I started as an enthusiastic Hilary fan…until I saw the level of desperation and divisive attacks when she started to lose… and oh! I am an educated woman running her PR company at home…

the same is playing up in the GOP camp. A few weeks ago, everything Obama did was evil.. suddenly, the GOP finds its own "Obama" and they are eating their words…the list is endless

1. He had no experience..

.leadership = experience…GOP Definition.

Suddenly Mr. Maverick McCain pulled Sarah Palin out of his trick bag and a volt farce…

a revised edition of the GOP thesarus now defines leadership as…wait for it….JUDGEMENT!!!! ding-dong-ding-dong…Bingo night!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thought that was what Obama has been saying all along~

2. No foreign policy experience.

Obama was hit black n blue on this…"he has only been to Iraq once, bla bla bla ( as if Iraq =the whole world ! )

as one of those humans who live in that rest of the world, the American definition of foreign policy offends our sensibilities…

we take the time to learn about your culture and nation but the high handedness the Bush Admin has taken towards the rest of us just alienates us the more…Clinton was the last President who seemed to get it from our point of view.

well, Obama goes on a world visit which was a resounding success and the GOP calls him a Rock star celebrity!!!

its obvious now they were just plain jealous cos now they found their own "rock star', the issues no longer matter …its all about the personality now

Obama was a greek god last week….Palin is their greek goddess now …touche.

suddenly speeches are now the real deal…. it was outrageous that Obama could ignite the crowd….its suddenly fantastic that Palin ignite their crowd…

what puts me off most is the disrespect…nastiness… lies….just to win…

all the GOP talking heads on CNN, Fox, and the networks are just that….talkin heads!

the sad thing is that you actually have Americans who believe the balooney…!!! shock! shock

Watching this elections, I take back all my criticisms of my country's politicians…i used to compare them to the Americans but i now see that we are light years ahead

our politics is about real issues…the US version is about appearances, beauty queens and hollywood visciousness … washington style

as a pentecostal christian, i still wonder why the GOP is the party of the conservatives…

they lack every grace and values of the christian faith…we are not haters, we serve a God who loves and respect people, i dont agree with abortion, gay marriage and i believe in creationism …but there is no part of my bible that says Palin's speech last night represented Jesus' opinion of the Democrats….and for the records…every true christian is a community organizer…Jesus commands us to…so I wonder which Jesus the GOP conservatives represent.

to every American who reads this, if you eventually vote McCain/Palin, you would finally have proved to the rest of us that the US is a nation of empty suits after all…no content, just packaging.

the world is watching to see if Bush is a representation of the real America or he was just a bad joke…vote McCain and you finally lose the remaining strands of global respect that seems to mean so much to you..

the world is watching……

Voice of Reason   September 4th, 2008 12:13 pm ET

I love america. The republicans can come right out and say the election is not about the issues but personalities. We are now going to choose a president on the mere basis of who can field dress a moose.

BTW, The reason Palin has such a high approval rating is because she taxed the windfall profits of oil companies and gave a rebate to the tax payers of Alaska. Now which candidate wants to do that for the nation but is constantly attacked.

One nation, in-GOP-divisionable   September 4th, 2008 12:13 pm ET

Looks like the new GOP strategy is Get Angry and Divide. The hate that was coming out of the RNC speeches last night was overwhelming. I thought Romney's eyes were going to pop out he was so intense in his name-calling. Rudy was beyond rude, and frankly has hurt any reputation he had left.

Palin kicked off her national reputation with a very sour note. The speech she read, writen by a Bush speechwriter paid with our tax dollars, was sexist. She looked like a puppet reading something Karl Rove wrote. The GOP united last night behind the far right and took the arrogant divisive stance, "Either you're with us, or against us".

Fight HIllary Fight   September 4th, 2008 12:13 pm ET

I love SARAH PALIN…I am sure that this will put the HILLARY people like myself identify with a WOMAN…

OBAMA WHO??

MCCAIN/PALIN

Rachel, IN   September 4th, 2008 12:13 pm ET

I could never vote for a woman who thinks women don't deserve equal pay for equal work. Try selling that to the new generation, she is supposed to represent. Young people are laughing at her and her pitbull tactics. BTW, a pitbull looks better than she does.

Obama/Biden 08

Republicansattack   September 4th, 2008 12:12 pm ET

MCCAIN: "She's been governor of our largest state, in charge of 20 percent of America's energy supply … She's responsible for 20 percent of the nation's energy supply. I'm entertained by the comparison and I hope we can keep making that comparison that running a political campaign is somehow comparable to being the executive of the largest state in America," he said in an interview with ABC News' Charles Gibson.

THE FACTS: McCain's phrasing exaggerates both claims. Palin is governor of a state that ranks second nationally in crude oil production, but she's no more "responsible" for that resource than President Bush was when he was governor of Texas, another oil-producing state. In fact, her primary power is the ability to tax oil, which she did in concert with the Alaska Legislature. And where Alaska is the largest state in America, McCain could as easily have called it the 47th largest state — by population.

Kevin   September 4th, 2008 12:12 pm ET

It's interesting to me how her supporters always try to divert the conversation away from issues and to something completely unrelated (ala Barb's comment about a half brother in Kenya) I want to see your actual support for her experience (and just to be fair lets not include Obama's community organizer experience and only start when each candidate reached the state level and national level. 21 months vs 11 years. or better yet, lets compare Her experience to Joe Biden… 34 years to 21 months… give me a break.

Indigo Girl   September 4th, 2008 12:12 pm ET

More of the same – more anger and ugliness – more attack – more distortion of the truth. Didn't know much about her – had no idea she had it in her to give such a speech. Looks like she's going to fit in very nicely with the "good ole' boys" of Washington! It is even more apparent that Obama represents true change – change we so badly need.

Louise   September 4th, 2008 12:12 pm ET

Palin is exactly what we need in washington right now. I bet the Obama camp never thought a women from Alaska could rock their world. they thought the election was in the bag after he gave his acceptance speech, but John McCain went one better and now Palin has all the attention.

The Clear Thinking Independent Voter   September 4th, 2008 12:12 pm ET

These folks don't get it.

I'm not a member of the political machine in American. I really am not impressed by what ever points a particular party thinks it has scored with its base of voters during a convention.

In fact, I'm more turned off by it. The story here is that Palin did more harm to McCain's chance at getting elected than she helped. They blew the opportunity to talk to me, the non-rabid undecided voter, at a time when they had my precious attention / time.

The Dems were partisan too but it was nothing like what I saw last night. They are the more intelligent, adult and civil party right now. I'm likely to go for Obama rather than McCain.

Baze   September 4th, 2008 12:12 pm ET

Good analysis by the Obama campaing. Of course she was going to come out swinging, as will John McCain tonight. And in the end they will have delivered a negative message that will not sit over well with Americans or the world

irene   September 4th, 2008 12:11 pm ET

Yep. She's very very skilled at attack speeches & telling us what someone else cannot do.If she cared so much about us,& reform she would have pointed ,as well, all the economic messes(which not only includes energy, but housing, education, health etc) George Bush has put the U.S in & told us how she'd work hard to do things differently thus bringing the reform she claims she's good at. It was her republican party that has put us into close recession. She didn't tell us what better plans she has compared to Obama to give us a flicker of hope that she and John McCain are not pleased with the way their party has brought the nation down economically & have a different plan to correct George Bush's mistakes.I think the attack should have gone to George Bush & then she tell us what she & McCain's plans are & how better they'd improve our economy compared to Obama's ,Biden's & Clinton's ideas. Also Huckabee should know that Governent would & should always be responsible for its citizens. We work hard & hey collect our taxes.Even when we work for the private sector,we are taxed with the promise that government will use our hard earned money to improve all aspects of the country here & abroad. We need government & government needs us.

April Garlow   September 4th, 2008 12:11 pm ET

Maybe everyone should think about Joe Biden's age, just think if he were to die, Obama would have to be the president. Govemor Palin said all the things I hear my friends and neighbors saying.Today Obama went to a small townof mostly whites, and actually said that his MOTHER was the reason he is the person he is.—When he does things like that, we know that we never even heard him mention what an influence his mother had on him to a black audience. He only mentions her in relation to the fact that she was a single mother and once they recieved food stamps. He has so many different stories-but no one in the media seems bothered by not knowing WHO he is.

Ron from Baltimore   September 4th, 2008 12:11 pm ET

Looks like Wall Street really loved it, and the many joys that entire Administration has brought to our economy! We haven't seen this kind of reaction to a speech since Bernanke's first blooper—-

Let's let her get "her" message out in dribs and drabs, and we can sink the whole nation in just a few weeks!

BECAUSE HILLARY REPECT THE PARTY

JA Cook   September 4th, 2008 12:11 pm ET

I'm bothered by the nasty tone, started by Giuliani, then carried on by Palin. (via Bush's speech writer)

Palin didn't throw punches, she spewed vile in the best of conservative traditions proving she just might be able to fill Dick Cheney's shoes.

I have yet to know who this candidate is. She has not earned the right to mock her opponents when she has yet to utter a word of her own. She even continues to lie about her position on the bridge to nowhere and other matters.

Where was anything offered about the economy or issues? It was an insult to my intelligence and a waste of my time.

Sarah, we hardly know you!

oh my   September 4th, 2008 12:10 pm ET

Palin is nothing more than a political gimmick…she performed a good speech that was written weeks may be months ago by the Bush speech writing team…it played well to their base (she clung to her bible and her gun, and attacked Obama) but had no substance, we still dont know who this woman is we have not heard her voice. Palin is a Pawn, she is not a VP, it is an offence to women the utter sexist idea that she is qualified because she wears a skirt, and her baggage just keeps getting worse. the hypocrisy of the family claim…then she uses her kids for political gain. this woman is under investigation…now instead of letting the people know who she is they are sending her to VP boot camp…what in the heck is VP boot camp?

and lat us not forget about mccain who does not has not and will not ever get it

The GOP proved to me last night they will forever be the party of divisiveness, hatred, non-inclusion, lies, bitterness, negativity and partisanship. I found her speech and the other speeches heartless, insulting, offensive and alienating to the majority of the population. If this ticket wins, I just don't see how I could relate to this country anymore.

Matthew   September 4th, 2008 12:10 pm ET

Of course Obama wasn't expecting ginger treatment. Palin's not a member of the media.

-K&H-   September 4th, 2008 12:10 pm ET

Lets see if we really need experience to be a president. Could someone answer the question if the GOP Ronald Regan can be president as an actor then why can Obama be president he has more experience than him and he did just fine as our President. Actor/Senator hmmm.. I'll take the senator.

Claire   September 4th, 2008 12:10 pm ET

THANK YOU CAIN and apPALIN!

Sarah Palin's speech last night was very misleading and deceiving when you consider the subtance of her words. She didn't have anything to build on because of the last eight years of the Bush failed policies. How can John McCain and Sarah Palin be reformers when John McCain himself has not reformed or upset the establishment that he has been part of. I also am tired of the republicans trying to influence my vote, by making voters feel guilty if they don't vote for a war hero.

Steve,

Tom   September 4th, 2008 12:10 pm ET

Hilarious that Biden's quote would be "style but no substance" – he should know by now as I'm sure he's spent plenty of time with the teenager in a suit who is the king of style but no substance. She's done and discussed more about substance than Obama ever will. Obama shouldn't expect ginger treatment – hopefully he's also wise enough (finally) to not play any race or gender cards either. No substance behind the attacks? You're talking about Obama right? What a joke – y'all should've voted for Hillary.

At times the News Media reminds me of a herd of cattle, very short attention span and easily led.
As an interested and fairly knowledgeable voter, I find the Republican Convention a Blast from the Past and not an effective one.

I have no idea what the Republicans are energized about. Yes Sarah Palin is far to the right of Bush and Cheney. Perhaps the Republicans can scare the News Media from publishing the many negatives about Palin’s political record. I have a problem with a Governor that spends Tax money on a lawyer and to fund a campaign to successfully defeat Proposition to outlaw the shooting of bears and wolves from Helicopters. She takes credit for stopping the Bridge to Nowhere, but used the money on other Pork projects. The List goes on and on. .

A large majority Americans are not happy about the condition of their lives and the direction of this Country. The Republican Party is largely responsible for our present condition. The Republican strategy of Divide and Conquer, playing on our fears and differences, won’t work this time. Fool me once, shame on you, Fool me twice, shame on me, Fool me a third time….not going to happen.

California Gold   September 4th, 2008 12:10 pm ET

It is funny that people say they love Sarah Palin's speech as they never heard it before – it is true – she has never been heard before except by wild animals and scant population in a tiny town. Her speech last night clearly demonstrated that she doesn't get it – no solutions to American problems that was created by Republicans and Bush/McSame

FORMER ARKANSAS GOV. MIKE HUCKABEE: Palin "got more votes running for mayor of Wasilla, Alaska than Joe Biden got running for president of the United States."

THE FACTS: A whopper. Palin got 616 votes in the 1996 mayor's election, and got 909 in her 1999 re-election race, for a total of 1,525. Biden dropped out of the race after the Iowa caucuses, but he still got 76,165 votes in 23 states and the District of Columbia where he was on the ballot during the 2008 presidential primaries.

Andrea   September 4th, 2008 12:09 pm ET

Hey CNN,before you fall totally over the cliff in love with Sarah Palin how about you actually do your jobs get the truth out there about all the misstatements of her speech or is it easier to fall in line to drop further into the abyss of Republican spin, all the cable news have fallen for John McCains trap and the people know it,the fear of taking on a woman has you all making blubbering fools of yourselves.

Mike, Syracuse NY   September 4th, 2008 12:09 pm ET

Christina, Thanks, you made the Republican point. No where in Obama's resume does it say he ran anything. Unless of course you count running his mouth. Obama has never balanced a budget. Obama has never made executive decisions. Obama has no leadership experience. If he were in business we'd call him an HR hire. That's a minority hired for a job he/she isn't qualified for solely to meet AA targets. We've all seen it; but we don't need it in a President.

Xavier---Virginia   September 4th, 2008 12:08 pm ET

Speaking as someone who does non-profit work–work that protects the health and lives of over 900,000 people–I am deeply, deeply offended at her attack on community organizers. I cannot believe that the Republican party, the party of 'the people should fix it, not the government,' turn around and belittled the very people who are putting that philosophy into action.

Conservatives are evil, evil people.

Short Conversation   September 4th, 2008 12:08 pm ET

Here is a short conversation:

Sarah, please tell us about your experience in crafting national and international policy that will qualify you to be a heartbeat away from the presidency.

*crickets chirping*

Obama has spent time in the senate, both state and national, has run an outstanding campaign, and is at least known and respected around the world. Plus he is more refined, intelligent, and educated (she has a BS in journalism from a no-name university). And don't give me the "executive experience" line. By that measure she is more experienced than McCain.

Anonymous   September 4th, 2008 12:08 pm ET

Mitt Romney's speech was horrible. It shows what a lousy speaker he is. I don't know how he every got elected governer. Of course he was only a one term governor. I wish he would go away. He has a spoiled stay at home wife who has never worked a day in her life along with his spoiled children. He is a disgrace.

Barb   September 4th, 2008 12:07 pm ET

Palin said the only difference between a hockey mom and a pitbull is lipstick. I wonder if she really thought about what she was saying or just read what her speach writer wrote. I do not think that is a compliment at all,

I know there is a big difference between Sen. Obama and a pitbull. He would not pretend to be the family friend and then wakeup one day and attack the children.

M. Winners, Mesa, AZ   September 4th, 2008 12:07 pm ET

Just hope that after Palin goes thru the "neocon boot-camp" she's ready for real-world political combat. The speech that was crafted by the "fear, smear, mock and lie" repugs won't be there for her to follow linme byline next time so we will quickly see that Palin is an "empty skirt" from Hicksville – Provided the Dems are not mabby-pambys about exposing McCainand Palin for what they are truly offering – 4 more years of the Bush/Chaney administration…

Kelby from Houston, TX   September 4th, 2008 12:07 pm ET

It's sad that we have become so accustomed to smear attacks from the GOP. I heard Romney refer to the repuglicans as the party of big ideas. And yet none of the speakers I listened to that night provided any big ideas. I really feel that they should at some point acknowledge their record. Point out the mistakes they have made that make Americans suffer.
I guess they don't want to do that. Responsibility and accountablility is the only thing that will redeem the GOP. Otherwise, we will all witness the utter destruction of the party this year. The Senate will turn blue and then the Democrats will really get things done.
They call this a 'do nothing' congress, but if you pay attention to the details you will see repugs instinctively killing anything that comes from across the isle or they face a veto from the president. These people shot down CHIP for god's sake!
The dems will take the presidency and the Senate and the GOP will go and cry in the corner. And America will rise again.

OBAMA '08 DEMOCRATS '08 AND FOREVER!!!

California Gold   September 4th, 2008 12:07 pm ET

She did well last night. She was giving a canned speech to the Republican convention and it was designed to whip up enthusiasm and rally the troops. That she did. Confident and full of bravado. But it's Thursday, September 4th and hundreds of thousands of people still haven't paid their rent and mortgages and those in cold winter states are wondering how they are going to pay to heat their homes this winter, or buy food, or clothe their growing children who are hungry. Regardless of how nasty and aggressive Palin and McCain are, the issue in 2008 is the economy. The Democrats know that and are campaigning and talking with voters about that and other issues.

Canadian girl   September 4th, 2008 12:07 pm ET

I am so grateful to be a Canadian right now. If it were my country that were at risk of electing a McCain/Palin presidency, I would be terrified for myself and my daughters. But I remain fearful for the future of the world, if it ends up being run by two religious fanatics and warmongers.

Palin tried to ban books from the local library when she was mayor because those books didn't agree with her extreme religious views. And she opposes abortion even for girls that have been victims of rape or incest. She even cut funding for teenage single moms that were on the verge of becoming homeless. She is NOT a champion of women's rights, but the very opposite. She stands in stark opposition to everything that Hilary Clinton stands for, working to systematically destroy the very work that Clinton has done to help women.

One of the most cunning things McCain has done is hide his extremely anti-woman policies behind a female VP. I'm frightened for your country.

What disturbs me the most is that the media is not talking about these issues. If Palin is elected, we Canadians will soon be providing a safe haven for women and girls that fall victim to her extremist views.

David Axelrod makes some good points. Palin did seem well-suited to deliver the scripted attacks; yes, she seems a natural at it. To counter those few "shrill" descriptions, more typically used against female speakers, I'd have to say her voice and natural smile were quite different from Hillary's in tone and pitch. I'd call the comments shrill, but they were indeed written by a male speech writer, from the good-old-boy gang of Bushies. Delivered here by a fresh voice, they still sink in as shrill and desperate attempts at avoiding issues by going for personal attacks. If that's all they're going to use her for, she's been had.

Do you know anything about chicago/ILL politics? How many bills did he not vote on?

Not sure but if you have ever went to college graduate or undergrad but I don't think being a student or a professor really qualify you for much…It might mean you are intetlligent but real life it aint….

ObamaAllTheWay   September 4th, 2008 12:06 pm ET

PALIN: "The Democratic nominee for president supports plans to raise income taxes, raise payroll taxes, raise investment income taxes, raise the death tax, raise business taxes, and increase the tax burden on the American people by hundreds of billions of dollars."

THE FACTS: The Tax Policy Center, a think tank run jointly by the Brookings Institution and the Urban Institute, concluded that Obama's plan would increase after-tax income for middle-income taxpayers by about 5 percent by 2012, or nearly $2,200 annually. McCain's plan, which cuts taxes across all income levels, would raise after tax-income for middle-income taxpayers by 3 percent, the center concluded.

Obama would provide $80 billion in tax breaks, mainly for poor workers and the elderly, including tripling the Earned Income Tax Credit for minimum-wage workers and higher credits for larger families.

He also would raise income taxes, capital gains and dividend taxes on the wealthiest. He would raise payroll taxes on taxpayers with incomes above $250,000, and he would raise corporate taxes. Small businesses that make more than $250,000 a year would see taxes rise.

Marc PDX   September 4th, 2008 12:06 pm ET

LOL! Obama's campaign is charging the republicans don't have a record to run on? As Rudy Guiliani pointed out last night, Obama has not created a single piece of legislation or a reform either in Illinois or Washington. NOT ONE! NOTHING. NADA.

So what about records???

Cynthia   September 4th, 2008 12:06 pm ET

Davie Alexrod is correct. I have watched at much of their convention each night as I can stand in doses but made sure I stayed tuned in last night for everything, except the vote. I thought the part of her speech about her family was great but the attacks and no substantive information on the issues was typical Republican style. I will have a huge problem with the media and pundits if, by some chance, Obama/Biden happen to hit back and the media and pundits gets in an uproar because of it. She may be a woman but she said that she is a pit bull with lipstick. So they should view her as a candidate who happens to wear lipstick and take her to task.

Frank   September 4th, 2008 12:06 pm ET

Obama got hammered for all the right reasons. And he deserves it! The responses I'm hearing from the Democrats are laughable and ingenuous. I will be proud to stand up and vote for McCain/Palin!

Derrick   September 4th, 2008 12:06 pm ET

Very well put Mr. Axelrod

Susan from Scotts Valley, CA   September 4th, 2008 12:06 pm ET

It's the same kind of Washington politics because her speech was written by old time Washington speech writers. She and McCain are offering nothing new here. They seem to forget that it was Republicans that got us in this mess to begin with. We're not so stupid to let Republicans screw us for another four. Are we?

Dave   September 4th, 2008 12:05 pm ET

It goes both ways. This is going to be a fight for sure. Too bad they are keeping Barr out. This two party system is a sham.

Joe   September 4th, 2008 12:05 pm ET

When did CNN get bought by Rupert Murdoch?

All this praise for a pretty lame speech.

So, she’s a soccer mom – hooray for soccer moms.

What’s McCain and his token going to do about trade imbalance (status quo).
How about Iraq ( status quo)…

We get the picture.

Raph   September 4th, 2008 12:05 pm ET

Well, hello, the truth was told last night and the empty sexist liberals are shaking in their boots. Why,because they know that a sheriff is coming to washington to sanitize it.Keep on with the rumors empty heads, the people in the middle America knows the best candidate and they will speak out in a loud voice this november

Jane   September 4th, 2008 12:05 pm ET

Because there IS something there for her to attack.

jason   September 4th, 2008 12:05 pm ET

I was a swing vote until last night and this morning. I have been following the lection and the candidates very closely. Sarah convinced me. She made all the right points and notes. It was truly magnificent! It was such a nice surprise seeing most of the bloggers scrambling to say things that frankly and honestly aree just down right wrong and false.

John – Palin did not attack Michelle Obama. It was Romney. But your statement is a great example of the multitude of postings from these hateful bloggers that really are ignorant when it comes to facts.

Let's be honest   September 4th, 2008 12:04 pm ET

If you think highly of Bill Clinton and MLK Jr., Let's not engage of the politics of personal destruction on paling and judge Obama not by the color of his skin, but by the content of his Character.
What Obama said in Scranton VS San Francisco is correct.
On experience, he effectively has been a Senator for about 145 days.
Of the 4 on both tickets, Obama is the least experienced, and to be compared to the #2 on the other ticket is a p[lace where he does not want to be either.
Biden was praised for his dedication to his job, during his life tragedy, Palin is critized fo trying aspire to higher office while being a mom.

Hold on Sarah! Leave the gloves off, you do'nt need them anymore. Please stay on offense and keep punching. You will win over more than you already have.

Internet Argument Winner   September 4th, 2008 12:04 pm ET

Lets see how she yup-yups her way through real interviews/debates without prewritten speech and 3 days of parrot training.

sm   September 4th, 2008 12:04 pm ET

OBAMA DID NOT EXPECT WHAT ?
Obama expected that an unknown "inexperienced" woman, mother of five, from the North would self destruct.
I must say that Obama must be dead scared of the 60 days or so remaining in this campaign.
THAT WAS SUBSTANCE, OBAMA.
THAT WAS SUBSTANCE, BIDEN.
AND VERY TANGIBLE.

THOSE WERE NOT JUST STYLE OR WORDS.
THE SPECIFICS HURT, MY FRIEND.
THE TRUTH HURTS.

Maggie Muggins From Selwyn   September 4th, 2008 12:04 pm ET

Just in the National Enquirer did a more thorough vetting job on Sara Palin than John McCain has done in the two days he had to consider her as his VP pick.

It sure looks like Sara Palin is the gift that just keeps on giving and it will be hysterically funny to see how the righteous right like their standard bearer in a couple more weeks when all the truth comes out.

Jane   September 4th, 2008 12:04 pm ET

why should she be treated any different because she is a woman. I am a woman and I don't see the sexist part of this whole thing. If she wants to play in the big league then she Sarah should suckit up and quit her whining!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Chi4Obama   September 4th, 2008 12:04 pm ET

The pick of Sarah Palin for VP, is a complete contradiction in itself.

McCain labels Obama as "inexeperienced". And yet, he hires a running mate, with about a third of the "experience" as Obama.( No being governor in a state for a year, with a pop. of $600,000 is not signficant leadership experience).

She has never even traveled beyond the great states of Idaho (where she was born, and went to college); and Alaska (where she was raised).

She is nothing more than a "faceperson" for the GOP ticket.

doob   September 4th, 2008 12:04 pm ET

Obama 08!!

bob in L.A.   September 4th, 2008 12:04 pm ET

When someone does not have a postive contribution to a debate, they attack. The Republicans proved last night they are offering nothing.
Speaker after speaker, they attacked Democrats, the congress and the candidates, all by the way with half truths at best! But did anyone ever hear what they will do differently from what the current administration is doing? Did anyone hear them even mention the Bushes- either of them except when talking about the useless tax cut plan?
McCain has a plan- he will lead the McCain-ites out of the promised and and into the desert…for a war- with anyone.

Ted:Canada   September 4th, 2008 12:03 pm ET

HOCKEY MOM !!! Thanks CNN!!

Wow! had we known! – We have tones of hockey moms up here, most are smarter than Sarah – all you had to do was ask!
Wow! the prospect of a hockey rink at the White House is great!

THANKS CNN for the great show last night!

We were at the hockey bar last night and flipped to your channel and
it was great! How funny can you get?
The Republicans attacked
1. Obama
2. The Democrats
3. Community Organizers
4. Their own Government – that is republican
5. Politicians
6. Lobbyists
7. Washington
8. The Media
9. The Christian Right
What was really funning is that the crowd cheered louder with each attack and then they said that McCain was going to bring people together!! LOL

Here in Canada in the bar we laughed ours heads off. BOY! do you look stupid The American jokes were flying like crazy.

Thanks CNN – a good time was had by all up here in Canand . The episode should win “situational comedy of the year award” Repubs please do it again soon!

A couple of suggestions for NEXT TIME

1. Juliani should wear a clown suit – he is hilarious
2. See if you can get a picture of a bulldog with lipstick – that would be
great – the new republican button.
3.Get a group of Hockey Moms, Baseball Moms and Football Moms all in the same room fighting it out – with the looser getting McCain. call it "WWW Repub"
4.Change your signs from “Country First” to “Hockey First” we have never heard so many hockey clichés – thats' good!

Best comedy we have seen in a long time!
Keep it up repubs !!!!!

Chazzey   September 4th, 2008 12:03 pm ET

Yes she did hit it out the park, if you wanted to hear the same old same old from the Republican. I thought the speech was very negative against people who do not believe in the same things Republican do. She squanders most of the time talking about Barack Obama with sly and sarcastic remarks, but I did not hear her not once talk about the issues facing the America people like getting this economy on track or creating more jobs. To me as a very educated women, who was look for a women to stand there a talk about things that matter to women, she just came off as the typical catty, bitter woman who had her feeling hurt so she with out, with a smile and cut the person down in front of a people (very very tacky in front of you children). This were just mere distractions to get the crowd happy, but the fact is no one in the past 3 days has offered detailed plans on the issues American care most about. Also as a Christian, with Christian values, I was very appalled to have her stand up there with her under age pregnant child and her boyfriend like this was OK. I was also offended when she made the statement about community organizing, if it was not for the very few who took the call, we would not have had the civil rights movement, the women movement, and labor rights, and correct me if I’ m wrong , but doesn’t the church organize thing for the community as well. I am sorry, but this woman is not the woman I want leading me anywhere. So far the RNC is as pathetic as it can be.

Steve - southern Illinois   September 4th, 2008 12:03 pm ET

Palin's speech was the usual Republican pandering to right-wing extremists who think God has set them above the rest of us.

bridgette   September 4th, 2008 12:03 pm ET

What is McCain's platform. You know what's scary about the Republican Party is they won't even acknowledge that there is a problem. Not one peson mentions the economy at all. That is ridiculous and scary.

Michael, an independent Canadian   September 4th, 2008 12:03 pm ET

Attack Attack Attack…..isn't this what Bush did well? She certainly proved that she fits well with the Bush/McCain mold of nasty politics. Interesting first impression……more divisiveness……how do you cross party lines with such an aggressive attitude?

What the world wanted to learn is what is her position on foreign policy….we got nothing.

There was no mention of health care. But I'm not surprised. Is she going to agree with McCain that the US should not take a look at health care in Canada since McCain feels that our health care system doesn't work well (twice during the primaries McCain publicly declared that Canada's health care doesn't work well)?

Only in AMerica   September 4th, 2008 12:03 pm ET

It's is amazing how hypocrital this country is. Here is a Harvard educated, state and US senator pitted against a Governor of a state with, what 8 people in it? How do they compare? And I tell you truly that if one of Obama's girls were pregnant, the playing field would look truly different! I have to say the conservatives have done a great job of rally around this illegitimacy. It is supposedly what they say is so sad about our society, but they have put a happy face on it for this woman's sake. And they are really crying loudly and all together about anyone who tries to say ANYTHING about this woman.

It's truly sad that we are even having to deal with her. She is barely qualified to be the governor. I heard absolutely no substance from any of the republic speeches last night, but all this "credibility" is being created out of thin air from their attacks and her delivery. Are we crazy??? Start learning another language now folks because if McCain and this woman get into office, we could be easy pickings for takeover. And it's only our arrogance that keeps us from considering such a possiblity.

Unity My ###   September 4th, 2008 12:03 pm ET

Sarah stated that John McCain will work across party lines but in her speech she said that Harry Reid "…can't stand John McCain". Sarah then proceeded to applauded the fact that McCain is viewed negatively by Reid. She then goes on to say that we should take McCain out of the senate and put him in the white house. Really? …then he will be better able to work with the senate majority leader that "can't stand" him. Really.

bernard, macon, ga.   September 4th, 2008 12:03 pm ET

I thought Palin's speech was, arrogant, condesending and snobbish. The whole convention carried a tone of them -vs- us. why do the republicans think patriotism stops and starts with them. Ok, media do your job this time. you dropped the ball on the Iraq war, you kept quiet while the republicans spoon fed the country their twist agenda… so vet this Palin just as you did Obama and Clinton. Don't let the republcan spin silence you from finding out everything about this woman Palin.

Wayne   September 4th, 2008 12:03 pm ET

As a voter I noticed she did not address the last 8 years of Republican leadership. She is a candidate of the incumbant party. Why is there no discussion on how they improved public schools over the last 8 years? how they managed the federal budget? Did they leave the world a more peaceful place after 8 years of rule or a more dangerous place to live? All of the things that the GOP are proposing..all of the changes in Washington they say they will make why didnt they make them when they had control of the House/Senate and White House?

Bisola   September 4th, 2008 12:03 pm ET

This helped me clarify who I'm voting for…Palin/McCain, work on your policy.

Obama/Biden 08

Mary   September 4th, 2008 12:02 pm ET

I love that David is so cool about Palin's performance last night… it means that the Obama camp is still in full stride and continues to take the high road. John McCain will give another divisive, condescending speech tonight, and by Friday morning the McCain camp will be forgotten once more.

Peggy   September 4th, 2008 12:02 pm ET

As a Community Organizer myself ….I take great offense at Palin's remarks. If it weren't for Community Organizers she would not have the vote or HER JOB.What kind of woman is this and what year is she living in????? There is a large group of us that were shocked at her comment…an apology can't change her dated ideas.

george   September 4th, 2008 12:02 pm ET

while whining about attacks they have the gall to attack giuliani in the response? hello, he's not even running for a position! way to stay relevant.

as for "not having a record to run on" – exactly WHAT has your golden boy messiah done in over a decade? he did nothing for illinois and only voted present in his short 2 years as a senator. he's an empty suit and an EMPTY SEAT in the senate. he has nothing except his "community organizer" status and a speech from 2002 and he's supposed to be ready for the #1 job in the country?

Bob Indianapolis, IN   September 4th, 2008 12:02 pm ET

Nice shout out to the parents of "special needs" children. Then look on a federal and state wide level what the Republican Congress' Deficit Reduction Act has done to the money and services available to the parents of those special needs kids…It's not pretty, and these are the policies of "fiscal responsibility" and "smaller government" that McSame and Palin plan to continue.

Look at their wealthy friends in the crowd at the RNC hold up "Prosperity" signs. Obviously, they operate in a different world than the averge American.

Jerry D   September 4th, 2008 12:02 pm ET

Palin flat out distorted and lied to America. This will come back on her and the GOP. Also, McCain selection of this pick is a mockery of women. To clound the minds of H.Clinton supporters that this is someone like Hillary is a disgrace. The GOP has shown they consistent in making bad decision.

Louise Whitman   September 4th, 2008 12:02 pm ET

Frankly, I was insulted by their remarks on volunteer work. It spoke volumes! This convention is sickening.

More and more reason to gladly vote for Obama.

Mike from St. Louis   September 4th, 2008 12:01 pm ET

My question to america is…WHY WON'T THEY LET HER SPEAK PUBLICALLY TO THE MEDIA YET?
Are they hiding more of her? She can speak only when in the presense of campaign members? She's not actually ready for the public eye?
Somethings not right here and people are already voting her into the 2nd highest position in the world…BUT AGAIN SHE CAN'T SPEAK PUBLICALLY?
Wierd!!

Mike   September 4th, 2008 12:01 pm ET

I think most people don't know what a community organizer is. Obama campaign: you've got to tell them!

Eric   September 4th, 2008 12:01 pm ET

Axelrod, we love you, particularly the part about Giuliani. Notice the way he said Obama watched a bit of of the speech. Like most people I know, after five minutes of it, I could not take more of her hatred. I think the Obama camp will give her the silent treatment, not even taking her into account in their attacks.

WAWWAW   September 4th, 2008 12:01 pm ET

THANKS FOR THE ATTACKS. ALL YOU DID WAS REMIND US OF WHY WE NEED A CHANGE FROM THE ATTACK WITHOUT SUBSTANCE KARL ROVE TACTICS.

BYE BYE GOP.

Cynthia   September 4th, 2008 12:01 pm ET

Palin hasprovenherself to be a hypocrit. She made no statements of merit and has done nothing to prove to America that she is ready for this position. When asked about her experiences that would qualify her, the McCain camp can't help but dodge the questions. Sure, she is great at belittling people, but that is about it. Obama's work was for everyday Americans. He could have been out making toms of money working for corrupt parties, but he would prefer to make little money to help the people of his country. Palin is nothing more than a spoiled politician.

eric   September 4th, 2008 12:01 pm ET

I was trying to keep an open mind as far as Palin. I don't think she is qualified for the job but have been tuning out some of the criticisms but I have to say that after that speech, I'm solidly behind Obama and Biden. As stated in this article, they clearly have nothing to run on so they focus on Obama. Obama's speech had some red meat to it but he had a clear hopeful message that stood without all of that. I cannot say the same for Palin.

No maverick there. She is simply conforming to the base and doing what they tell her. It's really too bad that this person is the first woman on a presidential ticket.

holyman   September 4th, 2008 12:00 pm ET

Annette   September 4th, 2008 12:00 pm ET

I just don't get it. How do the Republicans wave signs that say, SERVICE, and in the speeches they insult people who are community organizers. Who do they think are providing "service". Only elected officials? Hah!
I think Sarah Palin is not the right person.
I will vote for Obama/Biden.

Darrell   September 4th, 2008 12:00 pm ET

This is absolutley the scariest time in recent American history. If you vote for McCain you are without a doubt voting for Palin as President in the near future. She is perfect for the Republican party as she will no doubt be able to start wars and divide the country lke no one before her.If she can rip apart her fellow Americans just imagine the wars she will start with the allies and the enemies.I can just imagine how she will tear apart any progress made with North Korea.Something is very wrong in America when this person has the chance of becoming President of America.I will not sleep until she is stopped. It is going to take the enormus experience and unselfishness of community organizers to make sure this ticket does not get to the Whitehouse.

Debbie, Independent Voter, MO   September 4th, 2008 12:00 pm ET

I did not hear her talking about helping the American people who are suffering from this economy created by the past eight years of BUSH.

Her party is not qualified to do anything but run this county into the ground. We have already seen the proof !!!

Kate from Florida   September 4th, 2008 12:00 pm ET

Who was Sarah's screech writer?

Michelle, PA   September 4th, 2008 12:00 pm ET

It was a well-delivered speech if you like Atwater polarizing culture war politics, but it's really too bad McCain doesn't believe in fact checkers any more than he believes in vetters – does he consider it "wasteful spending", I wonder?
It's a shame the McCain campaign has stooped so low as to choose this woman who has to lie about her own documented record, lie about her own documented positions, needs to answer questions about now three documented instances of abusing the power of an office she held for personal spite, and answer questions about her support for a group her husband actively belonged to (and she may have) which advocates secession from the United States she could easily, if McCain is elected, end up running.
What was that man thinking? Does he really like liars, hypocrites and traitors, or did he just leap before he looked? Either way, No McCain.

IOWA   September 4th, 2008 11:59 am ET

Yah Yah I watched Sarah, but I heard nothing useful, I heard attacks, I didn't hear anything significant, usually the work that is done by others that gains the most benefit are overlooked, as Sarah expressed, when she Rudy (not to be out done) showed, human service workers, teachers, community workers, these are the change agents, but because they don't make a lot of money, or don't have five kids (personally i believe she's only got 4, and her daughter is on he 2nd), but if anything i'm offended by her words, these are the people who do work that is unoticed and underpaid, she took no time to credit Obama, when he atleast made a point that her family was off limits, tells you something about her character, she mad no reference as to what she would do as vp, besides look good, other than that, i'd give her speech a c+, without subsance of course.

Lin   September 4th, 2008 11:59 am ET

What an arrogant comment, so Obama only watched part of it ,why does he have to go look in the mirror to adore himself ? The Obama reaction to Palin's speech shows they're in trouble, the koolaid is running out. This woman is for real.

Robin   September 4th, 2008 11:59 am ET

Palin's speech was the same revolting republican attacks that have been recycled every 4 years for decades only the package is different. If vicious attacks solved any of the monumental problems that the Bush/Cheney/McCain/Palin republican party has created we would not be in the position that we are in now. The only way that they can win is to divide people the same way that has been done over and over again. Not this time, not this election, no way, no how, no McCain/Palin.

Chi4Obama   September 4th, 2008 11:59 am ET

It's nice to know that Sarah Palin is a "hockey mom". And that she served on the PTA, likes to hunt, and eat Moose stew. And I'm sure that a lot of "suburban moms" can relate to her.

But guess what, that doesn't make you qualifited to be Vice President of the United States.

Call it "sexist" if you want. But it she were a man, there is absolutely "0″ chance that she would have been considered for VP. That's just a fact.

Shrimp Barnicles   September 4th, 2008 11:59 am ET

Biden needs to be careful not to pound or trump this young celebrity in a debate because she will win the sympathy of many. He needs to pamper Palin before he attacks her. She is a very weak and fragile. This will neutralize any false allegation of sexism.

John McCain has ZERO executive experience. ZERO!   September 4th, 2008 11:59 am ET

Palin speech was written by Bush's speechwriter. What else would expect but lies, distortions and divisiveness.

Rick K   September 4th, 2008 11:59 am ET

I think the more negative they can goad her into acting, the better it will be for Obama.

They should do everything in their power not to let her slip back into the cute, nurturing mom persona.

Her Achilles heel is the hatefulness and intolerance. It's in there ready to be teased out.

Lee   September 4th, 2008 11:58 am ET

Sarah is a breath of fresh air. Not from the Beltway. Not from the armpit that is the northeast US. Not from California. Not a LAWYER! Teddy Roosevelt was under age 45, had 2 years experience as a Governor, had lots of kids, loved the outdooors. Sound familiar….

Obama is from Chicago. What is that city known for around the world? Dirty government, corruption, party machine, vote early and vote often.

Go Sarah!

I just hope that the majority of Americans can see that the republicans are attacking to draw attention away from their lack of direction for this country.

Doug   September 4th, 2008 11:57 am ET

LOL I love how CNN put up Palin's "Don't go there" pose on this ticker. FUNNY. Regarding her speech, she didn't even write any of it. So it should mean nothing to the voters other than she knows how to read.

James D   September 4th, 2008 11:57 am ET

Gov. Palin is Jerry Falwell in a dress. Her speech was filled with lies and hypocrisy….so much for Christian values! The AP is reporting on the long list of falsehoods….where is CNN's coverage of the FACTS?? Oh yeah…CNN is the TV network arm of the National Enquirer…I forgot. Nevermind.

C'mon   September 4th, 2008 11:57 am ET

Her speech last night was full of a bunch of lies.. Well I guess that's usual coming from the Republicans…People accuse you of something and you go on the defensive by lying about everything or "distorting" the truth..

Chi4Obama   September 4th, 2008 11:57 am ET

Hmmm,
It sure would have been nice if Palin and the rest of the GOP would have focused on "substance" in TheIr speeches last night (i.e. what the GOP plans to do in order to fix America).

I don't think attacking Barack Obama, will help lower taxes, end the war in Iraq, or give us Universal Healthcare.

suzyku   September 4th, 2008 11:57 am ET

It's time to stop playing "nice" to Palin and McSame! Obama needs to continue what he started at the Dem. convention! If Palin is a "nasty" woman they should respond in kind, why should she get special treatment because she is a woman, isn't that sexist!?

Voter   September 4th, 2008 11:56 am ET

The usual snotty response. Sounds like they don't have any reply, so they have to resort to this sort of talk, as usual.

CM   September 4th, 2008 11:56 am ET

She secured the base which were voting red anyway. Beyond that I think she scared away more undecideds than anything.

She also mobilized Obama's base which would have been getting a touch complacent. Watch for the hightened response from the ground campaign and an influx of new voters coming to the polls.

If there is a high turonout in Nov its over for the GOP.

Jeanne   September 4th, 2008 11:56 am ET

I was truly offended by the notion that Community Organizers/Workers don't accomplish anything.
BIG mistake to make such comments.

McCain=Bush, 8 is enough   September 4th, 2008 11:56 am ET

Palin had no right to go after obama like that. She has been on the scene for all of about 5 days, Obama has been out there for almost 18 months, how dare she even think she can criticize him. As we say out here, "you don't know me like that."

Mysogonists for Obama   September 4th, 2008 11:56 am ET

Palin only said what many of us have been saying for nearly a year. Obama is not qualified. No way, no how. Has a one page resume typed in size 18 font. He has no track record of bipartisanship or change. He is a knee-jerk tax and spend liberal. He is a terrible, scary option for America.

Obama and Howard Dean conspired to cheat our first choice out of the chance to represent this nation. Plan B is so much better than Zero and his much more qualified V.P. candidate that I couldn't be more on board.

USAF Staff Sergeant   September 4th, 2008 11:55 am ET

Last night I actually got very angry at Palin. Her weak pathetic attempts to criticize Obama were disgusting. For someone like her, who brings nothing at all to the table, to criticize Obama is outrageous. She says his experience basically is only being a community organizer, well if that's how she wants to be, HER only experience is being a TV sports reporter.

This woman is way out of line.

Well said, Axelrod. We can't let them think Obama is wimpy, just that isn't going to resort to the same kind of demeaning behavior as the RNC speakers last night.

I mean, who makes fun of all community organizers? Was Palin's time better spent running for Miss Alaska?

JA Cook   September 4th, 2008 11:54 am ET

Okay, I'm convinced. Sarah Palin can spew vile well enough to fill Dick Cheney's shoes.

She's probably a better shot too.

Chi4Obama   September 4th, 2008 11:54 am ET

So let me guess, when Obama & Biden actually hit back against Palin's lies…..Will they be labeled as "sexist"??

TODD   September 4th, 2008 11:54 am ET

Maybe Obama could help and support his family, by doubling his brother(George Hussein Onyango Obama's) monthy income to $2.00! For just one dollar a month Barrack could do just that!

Robert in Seattle   September 4th, 2008 11:53 am ET

A pitbull? I think not. All bark and no bite. No substance behind the attacks. She sounded more like a manic chihuahua, growling and snapping…

Christina P   September 4th, 2008 11:53 am ET

Lets really look at the experience comparison:

4 years Wasilla City Council (8000 people)
6 years Wasilla mayor (8000 people)
1 year "Ethics Commissioner of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission"
20 months governor of a state with 660,000 people

Do the Republicans really think we're so stupid that we would believe Palin is more
experienced than Obama? Give me a break…

Its funny how she was attacking Michelle Obama for not being patriotic while her husband wanted Alaska to be free from the Union. LOL

God Bless America
