Todd Palin is known as the 'first dude' in Alaska.

(CNN) – As the newly minted Republican ticket gets set to tour key campaign states immediately following the end of the party’s convention, Sarah Palin's husband Todd is staying behind in Minneapolis for what's reputed to be the largest snowmobile event in the word.

Palin, a world renowned championship snowmobiler known as the "first dude" in Alaska, is set to attend "Hay Days" in lieu of hitting the campaign trail, senior McCain campaign aides told CNN. "Hay Days" is a snowmobile grass drag racing event that is billed as the unofficial kick-off of the snowmobile season.

Watch: Meet the 'first dude'

The aides didn't say whether Palin was participating in the event.

The race attracts the "fastest and most sophisticated iron in the world," according to the event's Web site. "The track has come from one that was full of bumps, to a groomed strip with cyclone fence and an underground sprinkler system which keeps the track in beautiful condition."

Palin, 43, is a four-time winner of the world's longest snowmobile race — the 2,000 mile Tesoro Iron Dog contest, that winds through Alaska's rugged terrain and is dubbed the "Iron Dog Iditarod."

As a female, I am totaly disgusted with the Republicans, to even suggest that women are so stupid to vote for their choice of VP. She has nothing going for her and to use Hillary Clinton's name with her is totally disrespectful. Send her back to Alaska and she needs to focus more on her family.

John in PA   September 4th, 2008 4:48 pm ET

Who cares? And honestly, I have never voted for or against a Presidential candidate based on his choice of a running mate. Gov Palin is not running for Pres., so who cares? This is between McCain and Obama, that's where your votes should lie.

Milton, Harrisburg, PA   September 4th, 2008 4:48 pm ET

Family values. Where? I don't see any? Are they hiding both the Nanny and Sarah from the media? Karl Rove can't be behind her all the time whispering what to say in her ear. Sooner or later she'll have to air her ignorance publicly.

Peter Zheutlin   September 4th, 2008 4:47 pm ET

Just adding to his carbon footprint.

indiePA   September 4th, 2008 4:47 pm ET

Hooray for him….but do we care?? Who's going to watch the kids? I'm already tired both of them.

No extremeright Palin   September 4th, 2008 4:34 pm ET

Who cares? He is an Ex-felon with a DUI record.

beevee   September 4th, 2008 4:33 pm ET

I did'nt think he would have any interest in politics. Wonder who is caring for the little ones of the family if both parents are busy with their own things.

KG   September 4th, 2008 4:33 pm ET

All you folks out there who continue with the "who's taking care of the kids" comments are way out of touch with the reality of America today. Families where both the father and mother work are the norm. It's been that way for decades. Gov Palin and her husband have made it work exceedingly well. They are simply a happy American family which rings true with other American families all across this country. That fact that you don't get it is just evidence of how out of touch you are with American today.

TyWebb   September 4th, 2008 4:33 pm ET

Governor Sarah Palin reminds me of the Queen of Hearts, a character out of the Alice in Wonderland book, who resorts to "off with the head" antics whenever someone crosses or displeases her. Spitefully trying to get a librarian fired, including an ex-brother-in-law? It seems that she has a propensity to use power to go after her opponents' jugular veins.

In these troubling times when America has lost its stature because of the cowboy tactics of George Bush, do we need a pitbull in red lipsticks at the White House?

Will in Richmond, VA   September 4th, 2008 4:31 pm ET

Funny… Before Republicans complained about the 'Non-News' stories that always followed dems. Now It's our turn to complain!!

Erin in Edmonds WA   September 4th, 2008 4:31 pm ET

I love that Sarah Palin is being vetted in public, and the nasty, rehearsed speech a la Rove will ignite the desire of democrats to see that she gets hers in the press. Can't wait until the original pit bull (Biden) starts railing on her about her misconduct and fraud–starting with emails sent to her husband re: troopergate – double the abuse of power, her support of the bridge to nowhere (which she stopped supporting but only if she could keep the money for her special-interest state, a 22 million dollar deficit from the small town she was mayor of, the illegitimate child her daughter is going to have, her blatant lack of education (does she really think her bachelor's degree trumps Barak's Columbia and Harvard Law education?) and a host of other indiscretions and lapses of intelligence and judgement. Her along with Humpty Dumpty McCain is a real sick ticket. Notice how the he can barely walk, and can't raise his arms. Something tells me his bones are starting to fuse–his collapse is eminent, and I'll be darned if this little White (trash) girl is gonna make decisions for me….

HOW did I know the obama gang would be critical of this also -
REMEMBER your guy told you "Family was off-limits" -Seems NO one cried when obama and Mommy put their kids in a Teen Magazine – just to look "cool"
Get over it – GOV Palin did an Excellent job last night – SHE can give a great speech – so can obama – SHE is young – So in obama
McCain is older – SO is Biden – what is the problem now?????????

Drop the sour grapes and start thinking straight.

anon   September 4th, 2008 4:29 pm ET

Why is it wrong for the Palin's to have their family out front, but Obama can shill out his daughters at the DNC and even have them speak, and it's OK?

Did you see Biden's son? Vote for daddy, I'll be in Iraq! Waa, waa, waa.

You don't see McCain using his military sons to get cheap sympathy!

steve dumford, Scotts valley ca.   September 4th, 2008 4:28 pm ET

The Obamabloggers are at it again. Palin got up there and showed them she's not intimidated and the Obama bloggers don't know what to do. I especially like the ones that say she read her speech from a teleprompter when it was obvious she kept looking at notes she had made. The teleprompter guy is Obama. Blitzer was saying last night that Obama was one of the best at reading his speech from a teleprompter.
And then we those that say her speech was written for her. Got news for all of you. All the politicians have their speeches written for them. Yes, even your god, Obama.
Now then there's the thing about being a hunter and cruelty to animals. Wonder how many of those fools are sitting down to a good steak tonight.
And the the sexists that were rampant in these blogs when Hillary was running now have another target for their sick sexism.. And, get this, alot of them are women. Women who have been brainwashed into thinking their inferior . Whose place is with the babies and doing the dishes and "takin care of their man." Looks as if that family is pretty healthy and happy to me and, just think all this while she was Governor, too.
Oh, and supposedly she lied during her speech. Does anyone remember that Obama was "not in the pews" and supposedly didn't know about the good Rev. Wrights far out positions? And then there's the little matter of him claiming that McCain was not for equal pay for equal work. Outright lie and he knew it when he said it. McCain is for equal pay just voted not to extend past six months, the time allowed to file a lawsuit. I guess with Obama being a lawyer he must not have liked limiting the number of chances lawyers have to milk their clients with outrageous fees.
One thing about Obamabots, They've all been given blinders to wear while looking at their idol.

Hey, The Other Campaign Strategist

"I heard this morning that Palin took her kids to her office in the statehouse. Is this what she would plan to do as VP? Would this perk be extended to all women in the Federal government?"

Now my concerns
I travel 56 miles one way to work (gas prices)(can you drill in my back yard)
My job budget is blown out the roof (over fuel cost)
My may have to drop health care because of cost from my employer
The stock market is dropping
Palin didn't mention any of these issues!

There should be a rule that people who run for VP have traveled outside of the United States, MORE THAN ONCE!!!! At least. How can Palin understand foreign affairs when her ONLY experience of life outside of the US, happened just ONCE! Explain that!

Where's the beef? Remember that catchphrase from the Regan era? This so applies to the GOP convention. Where's the beef? I didn't hear any solutions from Nanook of the North, or the Arizona Kid's henchmen. They are patently attacking the Democratic candidates because if they were to stick with issues, they'd be slammed to the concrete. The American people are sick to death with the economy, the war, health care, veteran's rights…all problems squarely in the imbecile from Crawford's lap. So next time Palin, McCain or any of the other GOP cronies pipe up with something about Obama or Biden, ask them "WHERE'S THE BEEF?".

When you can take any one of his attack ads against Obama, fill in the name of his Vice Presidential choice and come up with a winner, it is a PROBLEM. Whatever happened to common sense and no time for on the job training?

After all, the only difference between Bristol and the Black unwed teenage mothers is their color, right?

I felt like I had walked into the biggest car dealership this side of the Miss. watching the convention last night and Ms. Palin is their #1 salesman. You don't need much education to be a salesman or a governess (you can learn that at home ). Now a statesman well that is a quality mark achieved thru years of study and is always rewarded with wisdom not narcism. We need wisdom and diplomacy to speak for our people not Big Oil dealers. I wonder how many other Americans are seeing the sly deceitful words and manners of business these people are getting out there. Do we really want more of the same Bushy animals? Would the Republicans posing as Clinton supporters, please stop? I am a Clinton supporter and I know that in no way could you possibly back Palin and her far, far right wing policies and still claim your roots are with Senator Clinton. The fact is that Senator Clinton left the Democratic Convention with the respect and support of those who voted for Obama in the primaries and Obama left with the respect and support of the Clinton supporters. The Republican Party tries to win elections by dividing and you have to have the memory of the fish in finding Nemo not to see that and be appalled by it.

funny how the libs are now so concerned about who is taking care of the kids. No one seems concerned about the Obama kids while the parents have been on the campaign trail for 18 months.

And now the libs are concerned about experience? where was their concern about Obama's experience? Is Obama ready to lead the country in a crisis if Biden dies? Don't you think the Pres should have more experience than the Vice Pres?

any argument the liberals put forth cannot withstand sustained logical thinking…something they fail to do before running their mouths….

I would just love to see all of the news media, including CNN, get to the issues. Start asking the tough questions of Ms Palin. I heard nothing about the issues last night in her speech, only digs at the opposition. Lets get the candidates on the news shows and lets ask the tough questions of all of them. Perhaps then we as Americans can see for ourselves the differences between these parties. I for one am sick and tired of the Republicans trying to make this election again about god, guns, gays and terror. We have nothing but problems right here in American and I want to know who is going to clean this mess up that George Bush and company have created in the last eight years. What about health care, gas prices, green energy, the falling dollar, our decaying infrastructure and the bringing of our troops home from Iraq? Come on CNN get tough with the candidates…no soft balls because she is a woman. She asked last night to have a fight…so let's see if she and the rest can take the heat.

gene   September 4th, 2008 4:14 pm ET

Great… nice to know that between two parents with a newborn with special needs… one is taking a job which will keep her out of the home, and most likely out of the country for some time…. and the other one is out snowmobiling. Actually.. her husband seems cool… she seems like a decent person, but unfortunately she's playing the role of republican puppet.

This is a real family who knows how to live life to the fullest. Marriage is a partnership and it seems to me that both of them know how to encourage each other and treat each other with respect AND want each other to pursue their interests and reach their potential. If he was running for VP and she stayed home to participate in an important event, no one would be talking about this. What double standards – especially from the liberal side. Good grief. Mr. Palin and Mrs. Obama are not puppets and have their own lives. Both should be treated with respect for their individual quality, attributes and goals – not because they are a 'spouse'.

Patriot   September 4th, 2008 4:12 pm ET

I don't care about how Sarah Palin or John McCain take care of their families. I care about how their policy choices affect my family and millions of other Americans.

McCain and Palin get their health insurance paid for by the government (hers in Alaska and his in Washington). Yet they oppose giving the nearly 46 million uninsured Americans the same access to affordable health care.

John McCain's kids don't have to worry about paying for college. Yet he has opposed every single education support program to help others.

McCain and Palin say they will stand up to oil companies. Yet the only energy policy they support gives millions of dollars in tax breaks to oil companies to do more drilling and he has opposed every piece of federal legislation to explore alternative fuel sources.

McCain and Palin say they will revamp how Washington does business. Yet his campaign is filled with lobbyists and she has cooperated with Sen. Ted Stevens in funneling federal money for useless projects in Alaska for years. And McCain and Palin have no solutions for Americans worrying about their jobs in a fragile economy. iReport.com: Is Palin the right choice for you?

McCain and Palin want us to leave their families alone. Yet they want to make rules for our families by eliminating our right to make our own choices over abortion, eliminate our access to family planning education or domestic partner benefits, and our freedom from discrimination.

They want to control what our kids learn in school about sex and about science. In short, through the policies they promote and the judges they support, they want the government to have more control over our private lives than at any time in history.

McCain and Palin now say their campaign is about change, too. Yet the only real change they have proposed is a change from a suit to a skirt in the vice president's office and one man fighting a misplaced war for another in the Oval Office.

I agree. If he takes care of the kids, great. Many high powered couples have nannies that do much of the child rearing. There should not be a double standard simply becasue the woman has the more high powered position. These comments should stop!

Also, the use of the word "shrill" is very uncool and much like some of the "code word" comments directed at Obama. A more gender nutral expression like "mean and sarchastic" or "nasty and sarchastic" would be better used to describe her speech.

American   September 4th, 2008 4:09 pm ET

Obamatrons at CNN: All the Republicans did last night was tell it like it is. They held a mirror up to your candidate and apparently you liberals were afraid of what you saw, or what had to be pointed out to you. When you stop whining look in the mirror yourselves.

The Other Campaign Strategist @ 115th & Amsterdam   September 4th, 2008 4:09 pm ET

I heard this morning that Palin took her kids to her office in the statehouse.

Is this what she would plan to do as VP?

Would this perk be extended to all women in the Federal government?

…. to all parents?

You complain about your boss not doing his job. You notice he's only working to fatten his pockets with big oil payoffs. He fights all the time with the smaller companies instead of the bigger company that has hurt him the most . Your have not received a raise and you may lose your job because the boss is now outsourcing the jobs. You are about to lose your house and boss has so many houses he can't count them. The company you work for has not turned a profit and has low approval ratings. The boss distributes a company wide memo that reads " I really don't know much about the economy." You have put up with his bullying ways for eight long years. Finally your work contract is ending with your boss. Should I continue working for this creep or should I CHANGE employers?

It's that simple America. It's time for a change and YOU know it.

I don't care where he is. I would think though that somewhere there must be someone to look after the children and the baby. After all the baby is the parents responsibility, not the teenage kids.

Michelle Obama keeps her kids grounded.

just like the shotgun wedding they're planning. Two poor kids who made a couple bad choices now have to get married just to satisfy the base? how rediculous.

is no one else seeing the rediculous pandering? the fact that she started her speech off by dangling her soon to be soldier and special needs child infront of the media and cameras is shameless. atleast McCain never speaks of his kid, currently serving.

Sarah Palin told ministry students at her former church that the United States sent troops to fight in the Iraq war on a "task that is from God."

"Our national leaders are sending them out on a task that is from God," she said. "That's what we have to make sure that we're praying for, that there is a plan and that plan is God's plan."

This way they don't have to take responsibility and can blame God.

Got to love it! This is your pick?

Palin categorized herself as a pitbull…basically saying that she’s tough! Therefore, when being questioned/attacked by the media (she is a former journalist/news reporter…she knows the ropes…has a BA in Journalism from U of Idaho…no other degrees), or attacked by political opponents, the word SEXISM does not exist. All is fair in LOVE AND POLITICS…GAME ON!!!!!!!!!

For those of you who are claiming sexism when Palin is attacked, remember, get out the kitchen if you think the kitchen is too hot!!!

If we can read about Obama pretending to play basketball, we can hear about this.

Whereas Obama is described as a regular guy for pretending to do regular things, look at the hate comments starting already when a real regular guy shows up.

The anti-women Obama camp is just frothing at the mouth with an RNC woman in a powerful position mocking them. DNC dropped the feminist ball – RNC picked it up.

In response to last night's shrill, sarcastic speech it is evident that Sarah has no sincerity as a "leader:. So, let's take the "L" out of her name and call it what it is, the McCain-Pain team. I pity McCain who will regret the day that he fell for that act. Just wait until she starts speaking in tongues! That will introduce a whole new "foreign and exotic" state to Cokie Roberts.

Who is taking care of the children? Isn't Mrs. Palin supposed to be taking a crash course on what's going on in the world outside of Alaska. It really would appear the Palins are trying to do to much, and some hard decisions about what is more important needs to go on. I wonder which parent will do the adult thing and attend to their special needs child, and the child that will need some additional support who is currently pregnant.

CNN should be asking questions like: why is Palin hiding from the media? McCain, Obama & Biden are all scheduled for Sunday morning talk shows; what's her excuse? Is she staying home to help pack her son's underwear or something? And if that's the case, why isn't his father headed home as well?

Ok, I guess maybe this is news afterall; the "First Dude" would rather follow his hobbies than spend time with his son, who is supposedly deploying for Iraq next week.
