Palin graduated from the University of Idaho.
Palin graduated from the University of Idaho.

SPOKANE, Washington (AP) — Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin attended five colleges in six years before graduating from the University of Idaho in 1987.

Federal privacy laws prohibit the schools from disclosing her grades, and none of the schools contacted by The Associated Press could say why she transferred. There was no indication any of them were contacted as part of the background investigation of Palin by presidential candidate John McCain's campaign.

"Our office was not contacted by anyone," said Tania Thompson, spokeswoman for the University of Idaho in Moscow.

Palin, the governor of Alaska, was born in Idaho. Her family moved when she was only a few months old to Alaska, where she was raised.

She began college at Hawaii Pacific University, a private, nonsectarian school in Honolulu. She attended only as a freshman during the fall of 1982, school spokeswoman Crystale Lopez said.

Then known as Sarah Louise Heath, she was in the business administration program as a full-time student, Lopez said.

"We're trying to track down someone who knew her," Lopez added.

From Hawaii Pacific, Palin transferred to North Idaho College, a two-year school in Coeur d'Alene, about 30 miles east of Spokane. She attended the college as a general studies major for two semesters, in spring 1983 and fall 1983, spokeswoman Stacy Hudson said.

"We were not able to track down club affiliations or anything," Hudson said.

The school identified one of her professors but he did not remember her, Hudson said.

Prior to her selection by McCain, the North Idaho College Alumni Association notified Palin in June she would be the recipient of its 2008-2009 Distinguished Alumni of the Year Award.

From North Idaho College, Palin transferred 70 miles south to the University of Idaho, the state's flagship institution. She majored in journalism with an emphasis in broadcast news. She attended Idaho, whose mascot is the Vandals, from fall 1984 to spring 1985.

She then returned to Alaska to attend Matanuska-Susitna College in Palmer in fall 1985.

Then she returned to Idaho, for spring 1986, fall 1986 and spring 1987, when she graduated. Despite her journalism degree, she does not appear to have worked for the college newspaper or campus television station, school officials said. She worked briefly as a sportscaster for KTUU in Anchorage after she graduated college.

The McCain campaign did not have an immediate comment on Palin's higher education record.

In a recent interview with the school's alumni magazine, before her selection to run on the GOP ticket, she explained that her curiosity and love of writing made journalism a natural choice.

"I was always asking everyone the questions, and I still am today," Palin told the magazine.

The University of Idaho is taking advantage of Palin's nomination. A prominent photograph of her is featured on the school's Web site.

What is pathetic? Answer: The 71 previous comments.
The left always digresses to personal attacks on character and intelligence paying no regard to fact. I suppose only lawyers are qualified to be vp, or maybe docs. How stupid are we when we think college makes the man (or women). Wake up people!

Pri   September 4th, 2008 11:37 pm ET

Thats pathetic. Six yrs of college ??? and only one degree ?? If it was medicine or law, or CPA, i understand. But an undergraduate degree after series of third tier schools is definitely not a quality we want in our VP. How did she get her first job again???
Ahh yes, she won a beauty pageant.

ChrisP   September 4th, 2008 10:30 pm ET

VP of the United States of America? Possibly President? Un-*&#$^#-believable!!!

welches, oregon   September 4th, 2008 10:23 pm ET

I just donated $50 and will do so again on payday.

The repubs think this is about money……. LMAO!

Go Obama/BIden! You have the PEOPLE''s support.!!!

New York Woman   September 4th, 2008 9:58 pm ET

Wow! and she is so much wiser than Obama who went to the Ivy; hopefully she'll run for Pres, eventually. It's too bad the Dems don't understand that we could care less about what school you went too. Knowledge without wisdom is dangerous.

Mr C   September 4th, 2008 9:58 pm ET

All I can say is DAYUMMMMM!!!!

MBFLA   September 4th, 2008 9:57 pm ET

I have to give her a great deal of credit. She has a real future as Obama/Biden's main fund raiser. High 5s to Sarah! Keep that pit bull stuff up and the Democrats will sweep the country in every election. Thanks for the help!

Obama/ Biden 08

trish james   September 4th, 2008 9:56 pm ET

As citizens of the USA we can't afford another four years of foolishness - we need to choose with wisdom and clarity and be fully informed about the candidates. It seems to me the choice is obvious - Obama!

Anna   September 4th, 2008 9:56 pm ET

Geesh, you people are UNREAL! You have no idea why she transferred at all!! There are many reasons why people transfer schools. Was she following her husband? Did she have medical issues? Family crisis?

All the stuff she has done since she graduated.. does that matter at all?
Do you want your employer going back to your elementary school grades and basing their decision on that instead of the real world practical accomplishments since then?

And BTW Obama has done nothing, led nothing, and has NO PLANS! And yes he went to Columbia undergrad (after transferring from another school) and Harvard (umm, can you say affirmative action?) - Why aren't you talking about that? Oh right, because he is a MAN!

shane   September 4th, 2008 9:56 pm ET

Who cares how long she spent in college and how many she went. This is another dumb story the dems are gonna shove down our throats now. Thousands of people spend extra time and switch colleges. obviously the journalism degree isnt really a factor if shes a gov now.

Sonia   September 4th, 2008 9:56 pm ET

I just graduated from college in 4 years (could have been sooner)… even with transferring people around me graduated within 4 1/2 years. 5 colleges?! That's a record.

Tes   September 4th, 2008 9:55 pm ET

Ok, may be she attended 5 colleges, took 6 years to get a "degree", forced her daughter to marry, shoots innocent animals from an helicopter, had never been out of the US until recently, ….. , but who said she is not qualified to be a VP?

Brenda Mtl Can   September 4th, 2008 9:42 pm ET

Wow what McSame will do with that

catmom   September 4th, 2008 9:41 pm ET

Indiana voter and all you other Palin fans, please !!! Are you saying that at this time you would really want a person like this in the White House? Oh, sorry we just spent the past seven years with Bush so I guess she would be an improvement.

debkansas   September 4th, 2008 9:30 pm ET

Don't understand this lady. Ok, McCain, step up to the plate and explain to us all why you chose this person. I am trying to listen and learn why you wanted her as your vp. I just haven't figured it out yet. With all the experienced and smart minded persons you could have chosen, why her.

Karen Lawrence   September 4th, 2008 9:10 pm ET

Wow!!! She did move around a lot. I wonder what she was running from. She was trying to find herself.

Molars   September 4th, 2008 9:09 pm ET

This woman is a train reck. A dummy and a dumbo to lead America. God, please save us.

IDU   September 4th, 2008 9:09 pm ET

CNN, Stop scaring me!

Joyce   September 4th, 2008 8:58 pm ET

WOW!!! Six years and 5 colleges for a Journalism Degree. It took me that long and two universities (undergrad and grad) to get a M.S in Biochemistry. I'm not trying to compare myself to her…Ok, maybe I am…but she is clearly unstable. Everyone knows that you risk loosing alot of credits when you transfer colleges, and transfering 5 times is absolutely insane! And seeing that she has never used her Journalism Degree shows me that she just settled for an easy major for the sake of saying "I have a college degree."

Shannon in California   September 4th, 2008 8:57 pm ET

AP, keep digging, we want the truth about this woman.

Dready1rasta   September 4th, 2008 8:56 pm ET

Quite frankly I see NOTHING attractive about this woman appearance wise or intellectually. Those who do must have a very low standard.

Tish,NC   September 4th, 2008 8:50 pm ET

The Republicans clearly take the American people for fools!! They honestly think they can just throw this non-qualified woman and her family dress them up, tell them what to say and we are supposed to say OOOOO!!! No! Not this time!! We are paying attention!! Close attention and I don't care how much or what color you put on that pit bull! She is one of the most shady people on the political scene! Scandal after scandal everyday!! I wan so mad last night watching all the CNN pundits falling all over her and her tired speech!! That someone else wrote for her and that she read and that annoying voice of hers! Please you guys are the worst!!"ENOUGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

O/B08!

s.b.   September 4th, 2008 8:49 pm ET

Her grades must have been good enough to transfer to another college and be accepted.

Rj   September 4th, 2008 8:48 pm ET

Here's the way I see it. America is the woman and the Republicans are the lying cheating boyfriend of 8 years. And now he's begging to have her back and is promising to change. Even threatening her safety as a ploy to get her back. You had your shot, now step aside and let someone that's capable of providing her needs.
God Bess America!
René

DeniseGA   September 4th, 2008 8:47 pm ET

Wow! IGNORANCE IS NOT BLISS!

Palin 5 schools in 6 years…..McSame 5th from the BOTTOM OF HIS NAVAL ACADEMY, the only education he recieved. Wow the choice is clear!

Daniel   September 4th, 2008 8:43 pm ET

So she attended a lot of different colleges, and maybe she didn't do much practical journalism work. But can someone explain to me how this matters? If she'd stayed at the same college for four years and worked at the student paper, radio, or TV station, would that make her any better qualified for the vice presidency?

Community Organizers for Obama!!   September 4th, 2008 8:43 pm ET

Sounds like the maverick kept getting canned!!! Thanks for helping us raise $10M though!!! Welcome aboard Sarah!!!!

Grace   September 4th, 2008 8:43 pm ET

Dr. Phil: Invite this VP candidate in your show, please.

Disgusted   September 4th, 2008 8:43 pm ET

I refuse to waste my time tonight listening to negative comments and embracing negative energy from the McCain camp. Guess what I'm doing tonight? Spending QUALITY time with my family!

FAMILY FIRST! FAMILY FIRST! FAMILY FIRST

Mercedes   September 4th, 2008 8:42 pm ET

Didn't her party want to see the thesis Obama wrote when he was in college. I can't believe this woman had to go through so many colleges just to get a simple degree. What a waste of money.

Lawrence for barack   September 4th, 2008 8:42 pm ET

lol

Anonymous   September 4th, 2008 8:40 pm ET

McCain must have some alterior motive for this pick. There is no way that a man with these credentials would be a VP pick, or even his pick for an office aide. Is this some kind of joke? And they're trying to compare her to Obama? Give me a break. Was she part of a movement to get Alaska to succeed from the US? I heard that but do not know that as fact. If it is true - some Patriot! If it ain't true, somebody say so.

TheTruthHurts   September 4th, 2008 8:40 pm ET

Why is anybody surprised. She is much like the rest of us. But why would we want a C student running the country. I'm not speaking of Palin, but MCCAIN.

Independent   September 4th, 2008 8:39 pm ET

How many private Republican tutors will she need to go through to figure out where Darfur is? Unlike Russia, Darfus is nowhere near Alaska.

For all those people who are tempted to elect her because they can "relate" to her, please be mindful that we really could use someone with more intellectual horsepower and scholarship than "one of us" to lead this country through geopolitical quagmires and to discern flawed economic theories from sound economic policies. Haven't the last 8 years taught us that, without substance, down-to-earth charm and affability lead to disastrous results?

Lynne   September 4th, 2008 8:29 pm ET

Does this mean she has "academic" experience?

Len in Washington   September 4th, 2008 8:29 pm ET

I see that today the Alaska Police Union filed suit against Gov Palin and members of her staff for releasing confidential information from Her ex-brother in laws Personnel files.

Also, her husband is being listed as "heavily Involved" in the Legislative investigation of misuse of powers by the Governor.

This represents a shambles of a vetting process by McCain and his staff.

monique   September 4th, 2008 8:29 pm ET

SAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY WHATTTTTTTTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL
REALLY DID SHE EVEN GET HER DEGREE!!!!!!!

Jeri   September 4th, 2008 8:27 pm ET

I've been waiting for this information. I have a feeling that we've heard all the "best" of her accomplishments. I suspect more of this mediocrity is on the horizon.

Griff   September 4th, 2008 8:27 pm ET

That sounds BIG!! A College with "Tuska", in there somewhere..

Ll   September 4th, 2008 8:27 pm ET

5 colleges in 6 years… with that education, do you think she can figure out how Obama raised 8 million $s after her speech?

Tim   September 4th, 2008 8:27 pm ET

Wake up folks - this is an indecisive individual who is likely lucky to even have a college degree and she may be a heartbeat from being president????? What was McCain thinking?

Diane   September 4th, 2008 8:26 pm ET

Obviously a woman of vision, ambition & drive…..NOT!

sick n tired   September 4th, 2008 8:26 pm ET

So much for that "OLE COLLEGE TRY" thingy!!!

Indiana Voter   September 4th, 2008 8:26 pm ET

Yes, make her look more like the average American compared to elitist Obama/Biden ticket.

The left feels threatened by the average people.

Poetic Blue   September 4th, 2008 8:26 pm ET

Hell i graduated college at age 21 in 4 years with a bachelors in science with minimal work.. and it took her 6 years and almost 6 schools to get a freaking journalism???

BAHHAHAHAHAHAHAH

shannon   September 4th, 2008 8:26 pm ET

You guys will do anything in an attempt to trash this woman. What is next…she doesn't go to the same fast food joint?

Or maybe she doesn't use the same hockey puck every year?

nola   September 4th, 2008 8:25 pm ET

Does she really earn a degree or did she pay for one

ME   September 4th, 2008 8:23 pm ET

Well said Cathy, she may not look like Rosi, but it's obvious she's gotta an attitude like her.

We should expect more from our National Leaders.

Felton a.k.a.-Your parents Common Sense   September 4th, 2008 8:23 pm ET

….I know…and all she got was a B.S. in Communications…stress on the B.S…no doubt !!

G-Man   September 4th, 2008 8:22 pm ET

The woman is certainly not perfect… no matter how much she and the GOP pretend to be… nobody is.

We'll never know why she attended so many colleges, because she won't do interviews.

Dr. Mimi De La Cruz   September 4th, 2008 8:22 pm ET

THAT'S WHAT I CALL INTELLECTUALLY GIFTED ???

MCSAME MUST HAVE SEEN IN HER SOMETHING THE

REST OF US OBVIOUSLY DON'T. & IF WE ARE LUCKY WON'T.

vette66   September 4th, 2008 8:22 pm ET

Who really cares. How many people have been successful without a college degree.

We need the elite "governing" body out of DC. They think they own this country and can do with it as they please.

TERM LIMITS FOR ALL!!!

Ann   September 4th, 2008 8:21 pm ET

Sounds like she and George W. are about the same intellect. Very scary for the United States.

Republican for Obama   September 4th, 2008 8:21 pm ET

That's the kind of resume that would have an employer running the other way!

Patrick Williams   September 4th, 2008 8:21 pm ET

Wow, she moved around a lot….

Terri King   September 4th, 2008 8:20 pm ET

Can you believe this?

CT Belle   September 4th, 2008 8:20 pm ET

They had never been contacted? One would think she was never vetted! The Emperor doesn't have any clothes!

Obama/Biden 08   September 4th, 2008 8:20 pm ET

Wonderful. She is the best the Republicans could come up with? Come on-even Joe Lieberman would have been better.

Jon   September 4th, 2008 8:20 pm ET

it's common to transfer from a 2 year to a four year school. It's also common to transfer to a flagship state school when you have done very well elsewhere in the state. Most Americans don't even graduate from a four year school. How is this relevant?

John Nail   September 4th, 2008 8:20 pm ET

This is a joke right? What a phoney and loser

David Peter   September 4th, 2008 8:20 pm ET

Is there a reason she was moving around so frequently??

chad in avery ca.   September 4th, 2008 8:19 pm ET

what schools? what did she study?
this is news but without answers.
oh well, ill just asume its because
shes unable to make a commitment to
education. not a problem for obama.

p.s. does the gop have anything to say
besides "war, terrorisim, 9-11, pow, or
iraq"?

READY...FIRE...AIM...MCCAIN   September 4th, 2008 8:19 pm ET

SHE WAS LOOKING FOR INTERESTING SUBJECTS ????

MCSHAME CERTAINLY PICKED HIS KIND OF VP,

LOW ON THE IQ & LOUD. SOUNDS ABOUT RIGHT.

Peter of Oregon   September 4th, 2008 8:19 pm ET

Outstanding!

Darrell   September 4th, 2008 8:19 pm ET

She set yet another record with this one. That is definetly unusual, and one has to wonder if Sarah Barracuda was a bully in her college years. She seems like she could have a slapfest with the "good ol boys club" and win.The more that comes out from this media vetting which McCain campaign failed to do a good job on,the worse she looks as far a character and judgement.

McCain……….Palin "The Bridge to Nowhere"
Country First…….NOT !!

dustin   September 4th, 2008 8:16 pm ET

has anyone ever seen a vp candidate get so much more attention than the presidential one, historically where does this rank?

funny man   September 4th, 2008 8:16 pm ET

Sorry…i forgot to add…Hey rush and hannidy, hope you can think of something negative to say about obama and biden to dig you loser candidates out of this one! LOL

EC   September 4th, 2008 8:16 pm ET

FIVE schools? What the heck? Was she a Gypsy or something? This has the smell of something very fishy. Something is definitely NOT adding up when you look at Sarah Palin's record and past.

Hummmm…….let's see WHAT comes out next….

Cathy   September 4th, 2008 8:08 pm ET

5 colleges in 6 years. This should tell you that this woman has a problem. She reminds me of Roseanne Barr.

Doug in Seattle   September 4th, 2008 8:08 pm ET

The more we know, the less we are impressed.

Kim, Ca   September 4th, 2008 8:07 pm ET
