I guess the Charlotte's and Westmorelands of the world figure he's uppity because he's a racist worst nightmare, an educated bi-racial man who debunks one of the biggest lies perpetrated by supremacist. That lie is that skin color determines intelligence.

Just know that just about 100% of the African Americans, 90% of the Native Americans, 80 % of the Hispanics, 70% of the Asians and 60% of the Caucasians will translate "uppity" into you saying that this Negro that "doesn't know his/her place".

The people that get called uppity tend to be well educated, proud, progressive, non-status-quo, achievers ... this has always been the case.

This is also the group of people that those in power are afraid of exactly because they will bring change.

I'm just so glad that we've reached a point where even the majority of white folks have the common decency to say no to racism and bigotry. This bodes well for a harmonious USA in the future since we won't be a majority white country much longer.

I happen to be a white Obama supporter that didn't read any racism into this statement. I am of the opinion that there have been a FEW moments of actual racism and sexism throughout this process, but trying to label every attack this way is wasting everybody's time. I think we all need to take a deep breath.

i though obama and his sopporters(CNN) where all about change, playing the race card does not really sound like change to me.

Just another example that Congress doesn't share the same atmosphere as the rest of us... Even local papers here in middle GA are apparently smarter than the Harvard educated Congressman...

It is too bad that the news and celebs keep adding to this can people not see what is happening and what is going to happen. History is going to repeat itself again this gap has become so big I don't think it will ever close.

If Obama and his supporters keep this nitpicking about race up, he will lose. This is the same type of crap that happened in the primaries. Can anyone imagine calling the Clintons racists? Its a joke and they know it.

However, I doubt he meant his comment to be racist. I wasn't aware that "uppity" had racial overtones, either. Perhaps someone from the south should have more awareness of how it is commonly used today. But it's news to me.

To deetee, the answer is yes. All of my life, the word "uppity" has been commonly used when referring to snobbish rich gated community type folk, most of whom were/are white. When I see the word "uppity", I think snobbish elite and not much else. The image that comes to mind when I see the word is a snobby rich white person who thinks they're better than everyone else.

But I guess I learned something from this and will be careful not to use the word anymore.

I do really doubt if this guy meant anything racial by it, though. This immediate jump to cry "racism" or "sexism" has gotten out of hand and is quite ridiculous.
