Hillary Clinton spoke at the Democratic National Convention.

NEW YORK (AP) – Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton marched for labor and stumped with Democrats on Saturday, but sidestepped questions about the woman who has taken her place as the nation's most-talked-about female leader.

Clinton brushed aside questions about Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin during appearances at New York City's annual Labor Day parade and later during a stop on Staten Island.

"This election is about issues, and that's what's going to matter to people at the end of the day," she told reporters who asked her about the Alaska governor at a rally for a Democratic congressional candidate at Wagner College.

Clinton joined other New York politicians for a Saturday morning breakfast with union leaders in Manhattan, then marched up Fifth Avenue in the city's annual labor parade.

In the afternoon on Staten Island, she stumped for Democrat Mike McMahon, who is running for a congressional seat being vacated by Republican Vito Fossella.

Fossella decided not to seek re-election after a drunken driving arrest and a revelation that he fathered a child outside his marriage.

No longer a presidential candidate, Clinton was still welcomed warmly at all three events. Some supporters at her Staten Island rally brought old "Clinton for President" placards.

She only mentioned Palin by name once during the day, at the labor breakfast, when she uttered a modified version of a line from her speech at the Democratic National Convention.

"No way, no how, no McCain, no Palin," she said.

When you put a woman like Sarah around old men with ED of course they will be excited but not for long, we are waiting for Palin to give a detailed interview by herself explain to us how what she learnt in six colleges in six years, why her kids dont practice abstinence, why she is building a road with 300 million dollars tax payers money to the non-existent bridge to nowhere, if she is qualified more than Romney, Hackabee, Gulliani why did she not run for presidency instead of the old guy.

Wisest one of All   September 6th, 2008 4:11 pm ET

Well akb if this isn't American Idol how did a nobody like nobama beat Clinton? Nobody had heard of him until a year ago. His entire campaign has been slogans and feel good cliches. He has said nothing of substance during the entire campaign. He has been caught lying outright, flip flopping nonstop, unable to function without a teleprompter, proven racists, etc. etc. etc.

This entire campaign is American Idol. Proven fact!

Jim de Tejas   September 6th, 2008 4:11 pm ET

America needs the Clintons to put America first and campaign hard for Obama and Biden. There are a lot of hurt feelings from this campaign, but Obama and Clinton are 99% together on the issues - and the issues are what is at stake here. I really think this election might be the most important in a generation - it will decide where we go on the Supreme Court, on health care, on education, on a thoughtful vs. irresponsible foreign policy, and on energy independence (drilling won't solve our reliance on the Middle East).

Hall for Obama   September 6th, 2008 4:11 pm ET

"No way, no how, no McCain, no Palin,"

Mrs. Clinton is too much of a lady and a true leader to stoop so low as to trade insult with someone who is less lady like.

VDA   September 6th, 2008 3:57 pm ET

Hillary is truely a women with true grace which is why she does not have to go after Palin, eventually all her lies will catch up with her. I was amazed a how she wanted to keep her family situation away from the media but it is perfectly fine to parade her daughter on the stage at the convention as if it is okay ,sure everyone makes misakes but you can clearly see that they were trying to deceive the American people by hiding her stomach with the blanket ,I wonder if the rumors had not started would they have said anything (NO) ,this is truely sad because this is not a beauty contest she is in, she is running for the VP of the United States.

NORA, FLORIDA   September 6th, 2008 3:43 pm ET

I am reading some of the other blog post and I just hope many Americans pick their ears, eyes, and brains up off the floor and get it together. Mccain and Palin will run America into the ground. More people are voting for McCain/Palin ticket b/c he put a woman on the ticket. DON'T VOTE GENDER VOTE POLICIES AND SMART!!

As an everyday American I have really been tuning in to Palin's life history and character does matter. I know this is about McCain and Obama but if McCain croak, then we are left with Palin and I just don't see the experience or character. If Obama croaks, I would rather have the experience VP over the pitbull w/ lipstick.

Joel in CA   September 6th, 2008 3:43 pm ET

Hillary is doing something very few people in America have done over the last week–she is ignoring Palin altogether, and reminding us that this election is supposed to be about the top of the ticket. A race between Obama, who has campaigned as an agent of change for 18 months, and McCain, who has now flip-flopped on his own message. He was the candidate of experience two weeks ago, wasn't he?

akb   September 6th, 2008 3:43 pm ET

Sarah Palin is at best an anticlimax…Everybody's smitten with her "looks" and little else…Had she been a less lovely looking person, the media would have shred her to bits, considering that she was little known before the VP nomination…
I love women coming to power, the men have done enuff damage already…But a man/woman shouldn't come to power for the wrong reasons…This isn't american idol, for crying out loud…But then again emotions win elections, not logic/reason…I wish the democrats would stop being sooooooo wimpy, what with their need for decency and fairness and what not…All that the republicans do, is talk nonsense and mumbo jumbo…And the democrats do a poor job of countering them…

Texico From Mexico   September 6th, 2008 3:43 pm ET

Hillary should at least go after Palin on the issue of "why cant palin be interviewed? Why are they hiding her? She is ready for office and a heartbeat away from the presidency yet shes not ready to be interviewed? Are theyy waitng until after the election? Or are they afraid of more skeletons and the investigation? Wake up people….

Ph and all you Hillary supporters just remember what goes around comes around..if she were to run in 2012 after a McCain Presidency dont expect 50+% of the party to be there for you either. Thats the way you want to play it…we can play it too….but its too bad this party would rather screw each other over.

Matt: honestly   September 6th, 2008 3:42 pm ET

If the issue is character No Hillary = No Obama then lets talk about how a man left his crippled wife after she waited years for him to return from war. Lets talk about the guy who said Hillary's daughter was the product of Hillary and Janet Reno. Lets talk about the guy who has so much money he can't remember how many houses he has. Lets talk about the campaign that thinks having a first job out of college being a community organizer is a bad thing. Lets talk about character.

Yngvai   September 6th, 2008 3:42 pm ET

Enough about the American flags jingoistic crap. I love how some people think that just waving a flag somehow makes you a patriot.

No, a patriot is someone who respects the U.S. Constitution and stands for truth, honesty, and individual liberty. Today's neocon Republican party instead represents hypocrisy and a complete lack of regard for the U.S. Constitution. Waving a flag doesn't cover that up.

Susan - Canada   September 6th, 2008 3:42 pm ET

Hillary Clinton is too much of a lady to "diss" Palin….but just watch out…her turn will come where she will put this "little snit" in her place. And anyone who thinks, if, God forbid, that McCain should win the presidency, that she will be hanging around with McCain, they are sadly mistaken….he's only using her to try and win this election….they will keep her far away from him and the White House.

Just an observation from a Canadian viewer.

kathy From Kentucky   September 6th, 2008 3:41 pm ET

The DNC is to blame for this mess, Oh no wanted to put the
first Africian Black Male on the top, not a woman. The DNC
wanted no part of the clintions but now they want their help
to help obama win. If i were Hillary and Bill I would tell
them where to go. The clintons are probably laughing to them
selves about all of this. If the Decomarts loose the DNC
and the good old boys club is to blame no one else so
get over it. The mess with the US is all GOVERMENT FAULT
not just one party!!!!

Yea Obama can't come to Kentucky but the DNC are sending
Hillary and Bill. We love you Hillary and Bill but that will not
work for us Kentuckians. Obama don't have the time to come to
Kentucky so we don't have the time to vote for OBAMA.

wow   September 6th, 2008 3:41 pm ET

Will obama be dumping american flags everywhere he goes?????

Bri   September 6th, 2008 3:40 pm ET

Good for you Hillary…don't stoop to their gutter level. Americans want to know about the issues. They can keep their mudslinging.

Republican for change   September 6th, 2008 3:40 pm ET

Palin and Hillary in the same sentence is insulting. The media would be better off comparing Palin's leadership skills to Chelsea's if they want to compare her to a Clinton.

GOP = sad party of 2008

The people at the football game would had gotten those flags

Sherry, Atlanta   September 6th, 2008 3:39 pm ET

HILLARY, I'M DISAPPOINTED AT THE POSITION YOUR TAKING. . . YOU DIDN'T HAVE A PROBLEM "GETTING IN THE GUTTER", AS YOU TRIED TO TAKE SENATOR OBAMA DOWN!

NOW, IS THE TIME THAT YOU GO "TOE TO TOE" WITH THAT "LIPSTICK VIPOR".

AMERICA NEEDS YOU IN PRESIDENT OBAMA'S CABINET!

DON'T LET AMERICA DOWN, HILLARY!

The World is Watching.   September 6th, 2008 3:39 pm ET

Those Clinton's supporters who want to vote for McCain in november will see Obama's Supporters voting for Repulican for the next 20 years. Clinton has 18 million Votes and Obama 18 million votes. Puma should Stop with the Treat of voting for McCain in November.

Law Degree compared to a Jounalism Degree   September 6th, 2008 3:39 pm ET

Palin is no Hillary Clinton, look at Chelsey she is not dating thugs like Bristol!

Jeanne Beans   September 6th, 2008 3:38 pm ET

The above article states that Palin's solo appearance in Florida was scrapped for a different reason, but there are not doubts in my mind that it was scrapped because Hillary and other Dem women will be there campaigning for Obama.

Good to see you on the trail again for Barack, Hillary. Maybe you can talk some sense into these "vagina only criteria for president" women!

John   September 6th, 2008 3:38 pm ET

How is it possible for a person to still believe that Obama doesn't say the pledge? That story has been covered and cleared up so many times that it's hard to believe it can still be out there.

It's like those Japanese soldiers who fought on well after the end of the war. Since they were living in caves, cut of from th real world, they never got the news.

Open   September 6th, 2008 3:38 pm ET

Oh Larry!

You've gotta be kidding? Suddenly the DNC is responsible for how its attendees dispose of flags?

This is the kind of stupidity might work with uneducated folks - but most people understand that the flags were meant to be kept and saved as souveniers by attendees - it is NOT the fault of the DNC that some chose to disrespectfully toss them! Wake up - open your eyes!

My Mind is made up   September 6th, 2008 3:38 pm ET

Even Dr. Laura doesn't agree with having Palin on the ticket.
Her family is hurting the Republican are evil to even ask this lady!

My mind is finally made up! I will never support anyone who would take her from her family to be VP.

Sarah may be smart, however she is not that smart when she puts the country before her family, there is proff her family is hurting just look at her Daughter!

In addtion, McBush is lieing on tv about healthcare plan..

What is this country turing too!

Greg FL.   September 6th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

Hillary is true to her party. I really respect what she is doing. I wish some of her claimed supporters would follow her example.

Larry   September 6th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

I want to hear what she says about the 12,000 U.S. flags getting dumped in the trash after the DNC (in trash bags with empty PLASTIC water bottles and DiGiorno pizza boxes, among other things). I guess they served their purpose as patriotism props, but apparently nobody had a use for them afterwards. The McCain campaign possesses them now (courtesy of a group of Boy Scouts) and will no doubt take care of them, as any true patriot would.

Floridian for Obama   September 6th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

I don't understand how any woman can vote for Palin or McCain. BOTH are against equal pay for equal work, meaning that they do not support women being paid as much as men when they do the same job. They are both anti-choice, so if a woman is raped and gets pregnant, oh well! She has to have the baby. She has no choice. McCain and Palin will just hold women back more.

THIS woman is voting for Obama-Biden all the way!

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot   September 6th, 2008 3:24 pm ET

Right on Mrs. Clinton! Higher ground is Dem land. :)
She obviously understands that you can put LIPSTICK on a PIG, but it's still a pig at the end of the day…

sophia nyc   September 6th, 2008 3:23 pm ET

No one an take your place Hillary. Certainly not a far right fundamentalist war-monger.

Luis   September 6th, 2008 3:23 pm ET

I think we are tired of hearing each candidate talking about what the other won't do or how bad will be if elected. or with or without experience. both said "cut taxes, health care, Oil..etc.

But until now I don't hear how are they going to do all that. the steps. the date or goal of when will happen.

Universal health care. everyone wants it, but we have to understand that countries like Canada or France they give Helath care to the people because people pay high taxes that is how they can do it.

Here we want it but we don't want to pay ore taxes. how will it happen the candidates have to tell us.

employment both said "we will bring more jobs" tell us how are you goign to do it don't just said it.

As I said we need them to tell us now how are they going to work and built america again and make great.

whiteboy for obama   September 6th, 2008 3:23 pm ET

debby.that's not true.the flags were bundled and 'packaged' for use at later rallies.this is just another republican smear tactic,to question the democrats patriotism ,and i'm sick of your lies.

DLH   September 6th, 2008 3:21 pm ET

Poor, poor Hillary… once again, another woman is taking her place.

susan   September 6th, 2008 3:21 pm ET

Right on Hillary! Issues not personalities.

GO HILLARY 2016

Jorge   September 6th, 2008 3:20 pm ET

In the latest of the "Sarah Palin Chronicles" she is being kept off the Sunday morning talk shows. According to top McCaine aide Rick Davis, "Our strategy is in our hands, not the media's. We're going to do what's in our best interests to try to win the election. If we think going on TV news shows are [sic] in our best interests, we'll do it. If we don't, we won't." Never mind what's in the best interests of the country in getting to know the person the campaign wants to place one heartbeat away from being POTUS. Even Karl Rove admitted that Palin's selection was a campaign decision, not a governing decision.
It would not be the least bit surprising if the country got taken in once again by the Republican dog and pony show. Look what we got the last time they sold us a governor with a thin resume—–George W. Bush.

katiec   September 6th, 2008 3:20 pm ET

I truely wish Clinton would go after Palin full force.
As an experienced, qualified woman, she should not
let womens achievements be insulted by someone like
Palin.
Hillary, you certainly had no qualms attacking Obama,
now go after someone who deserves it.

Chris from NY   September 6th, 2008 3:19 pm ET

I agree with you baby. It's about the issues. It's not a beauty contest.

carolflowery   September 6th, 2008 3:19 pm ET

well, of course, it was obama asking her to stump for him, not bash mccain's vp choice, duh

Tainopower   September 6th, 2008 3:19 pm ET

In other words its your problem obama . Who in is sane mind will think Hillary Clinton is going to help obama. She want obama to loose so she can run in 2012.

Debby   September 6th, 2008 3:18 pm ET

Good for Hillary she has has integrity all the way and should be on this dismal ticket for the Dems. not Obama.

CNN why aren't you posting about all the Am. Flags that were thrown out at Obama's Thurs. night freak show and that the boy scouts took 84 bags of them thrown in a dumpster, and gave them to the McCain campaign and they were being used at the rally, and the rest will be put on memorial graves. What were these dumbocrats thinking when they tossed their flags in the garbage.

Big D   September 6th, 2008 3:18 pm ET

I want the media to pressue to get some real interviews from Palin. We have really only heard her give one speech - which was written for her. (And yes - Obama does write his own speeches!!!) It's ridiculous to claim that she's not ready to meet with the press, but she's ready to become the VP. I want to hear her views - after she mocked and insulted Obama's plans, I want to hear her explain why hers are better. And I want to hear the real story behind her changed position on the Bridge to Nowhere etc and etc and etc. How can they claim she's ready to be the VP or POTUS, but she isn't ready to give any interviews to the public!

And other posters - please lay off the negative comments about her family. That really should be off-limits, especially when it's based on rumors. Give her a break on those topics. Comment on her policies etc, but it's not helpful to get snarky about her family!

Republican selling lies to win votes   September 6th, 2008 3:16 pm ET

Republican don't want to talk about issues, and sara needs to start talking issues instead of attacking obama all day long.

ENOUGH ALREADY.

Is anybody listening?   September 6th, 2008 3:16 pm ET

If she's not talking about Palin does that mean she doesn't know what to say(hasn't been told)?

Franky   September 6th, 2008 3:16 pm ET

You think Hillary is gonna go at it with this woman?? Ha!!!! Hillary could care less about this woman and she could care less what she has to say.

The ladies ain't that stupid, they're smart. That's right I like them, LOL!!

No Hillary = No Obama   September 6th, 2008 3:16 pm ET

The issue is character - who has it and who doesn't. McCain can't lift his arm above his shoulder because of the bones that were broken in service to this country - Obama can't bother to lift his arm to say the pledge of alligence. Obama slammed the door in Hillary's face and by doing so women's access to power. McCain opened it right back up. One's a maverick, the other a jerk.
