Bill Clinton will attend the September 11 memorial ceremony at Ground Zero, Thursday.
Bill Clinton will attend the September 11 memorial ceremony at Ground Zero, Thursday.

(CNN) – Bill Clinton will join Barack Obama and John McCain in visiting Ground Zero this Thursday in memory of the victims of September 11, and deliver a speech focused on national security threats.

“But just as we reflect on the past, we must look ahead to ensure we are doing all we can to support families, unite our communities, and protect our country from future acts of terrorism," said the former president in a statement released by his office.

The McCain and Obama campaigns released a joint statement over the weekend announcing that both men will appear together in New York to mark the seventh anniversary of the attacks. The campaigns have also pledged to abstain from all negative campaign ads on that day.

Also Thursday, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama will meet at the former president's Harlem offices - their first extended in-person encounter since the tense primary season.

(UPDATED to clarify McCain and Obama are visiting Ground Zero Thursday, but will not be at the memorial ceremony.)

Bill is a former president and a power player in the Democratic coalition, show a little respect! He deserves to be there.

I love Bill Clinton. I wish he could run again. He got this country out of debt and the American people was doing great. Now, we are in a mess. The Republican Party know what they have done to this country, but I think they really don't care. As far as Pilan, she put herself in this position, when she said yes for VP. Her children are NOT off limits. She is no better than Hillary's daughter, George Bush's daughter, or anyone else. People need to stop guarding her as if she is super women. She have a special need child, plus her daughter is expecting a baby. Who ever think differently, men are not here on this earth to take care children. They are here to HELP. Children need both parents, but need their mother more. IF you DON't know what a special need child needs, PLEASE READ. People need to READ and STOP getting excited. McCain and Pilan constantly lie. Read their record. McCain talked about Obama and his past pastor, but no one talks about McCain and his links to McKeating issues. McCain been in Washington for 30 years or more. What has he done. Not to much, if you look at this country the way it is TODAY. Why didn't he make a change. If Obama was white, he would not have this problem of people saying that don' t know who he is. Because he and his father went to Harvard, now they want to say, he is Uppidy. Bull. If Obama is Uppidy, then McCain must be "Suddity." McCain has more money than Obama, plus he got engaged while he was married to his first wife. Can we really TRUST a man who would do this to his wife after she was in a car accident. I am sick of the media not talking about this. Also, McCain is NOT the ONLY person who was captured. Because he was captured, DOES NOT MAKE HIM CAPABLE OF BEING A PRESIDENT.

The Democrats will have to get the Republican's definition of 'what a day means'. Otherwise the Republicans claims of 'being the defenders of the the security, the faith, and the morality and attackers of EVIL – will appear in attack ads as Obama is climbing into his limo. Remember the cone of silence. McCain has no honour. When he says he respects his opponents he hashis his team mock them! ....and when he falsely claimed that he would run a clean campaign he appears to have flat out lied. Maybe I'm being unfair to him. He may actually be sleeping by 7:30 PM each night and does not realize his attack dogs are presenting this political crap in his name.

This year (again)..the Democrats are proving to be stupid. And sadly, I'm a Democrat. Our only hope is for Governor Palin to fair badly in interviews and debates. If that does not happen, then Senator Obama will be suffering greatly from the "Oh, man, I shoulda" syndrome...as in shoulda chosen HRC for VP. If fhe people REALLY matter, Senator Obama, then a VP choice for you should've been a
no-brainer: Clinton. Since Palin came on the scene, you are waaay off your game. Defensive is not becoming of you. So here's the question: are you gonna TAKE BACK THE PARTY...or are you gonna fade off into the sunset? You were a wimp for not making a "smart" choice in HRC for VP...and now we Dems are paying for it. Thanks a lot! Grow some. (on your own)..or better luck next time for ALL of us Dems. You really got game or not??? If you can still step back and make a "3," then show some humilty and flat out tell our party that you NEED the Clintons (especially HRC) to get you where you/we want and need to be: LEADERS! Real leaders for a truly Democratic future. Let's get it on!

REPUBLICAN HYPROCRISY V1.01   September 8th, 2008 9:37 pm ET

ROLE MODEL #1:

Jamie Lynn Spears was savaged by the far rabid right religious fascists. She was pregnant at 16, and later married. She was presented as the poster child of “moral decay” in America. Her mother Lynn Spears was not spoken of very kindly either.

ROLE MODEL #2:

Stay with me while I outline a hypothetical situation. A 17 year old teenager will marry in November, 6 months pregnant after ignoring lifelong teachings of "abstinence only" as teenage birth control. The wedding will take place in the Rose Garden and hosted by Bush complete with helicopters hovering just outside the White House no fly zone. Sometime in December the little “blessing” will arrive, perhaps vying for the first New’s Year’s baby. Now, I can only imagine the paparazzi mob scene next May when the mother actually graduates from high school and the price of the resultant shots of her in Senior ‘09 regalia. What would the rabid right say about the hypothetical mother in this case?

So, to recap. For those of you out there that do not understand the definition of Republican hypocrisy, please reread the first two paragraphs until you figure it out.

Let him fall on his race-card playing face all by himself – let his – LOL – "Brilliant" VP pick be his attack dog – that is the usual job for a VP pick – why should Hillary knock herself out for the Phoney Messiah?

Hillary has my vote in 2012

The only way she'll get it is if the media-blessed Messiah loses – he seems to be doing a good job of that so far – Of course, when he DOES lose, he'll no doubt blame it on the Clintons or "racism"

LOL – good thing "His Lordship" has already played out the race card, so he can't POSSIBLY blame it on racism – though, no doubt, his rabid chanting looney followers will try – they may even riot – good thing they only always stupidly loot and burn down their OWN neighborhoods............LOL – Obozo's followers are SO Educated.......! ROFLMAO

Obozo is forgetting one thing – SEXISM is getting more tired than RACISM – especially when "RACISM!" is being cried by someone who attended a RACIST church for 20 years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And his fat girlfriend Oprah ALSO attended that SAME racist ANTI-AMERICAN CHURCH and his disgusting RACIST wife wrote an anti-American hate-filled thesis while admitting she attended Princeton due to Affirmative Action!

What are the Dems paying Bill ( or promising) him to get him to show up along side of Obama? Must be something really BIG ! The use of 9/11 images in the republican convention was shameful. I cannot understand how anyone can support McCain after the recent new and improved "slander and lie" campaigns. What happened to the Straight Talk Express? I guess he has experience on the receiving end with these tactics, it knocked him out of the primaries in 2000.

We need positive leadership. Obama speaks of hope. McCain (and especially Palin) speak of negativity and fear. Hillary supporters need to understand that while it was a very close and contentious primary race, Obama is the victor. Obama needs your support, we need your support! If McCain wins, Hillary had no future as a President. Hillary and her supporters will be blamed for the loss. There will also be fewer democrats in this country. I will not live another 4 years under a neo-con, right wing, evangelical administration. I would rather leave than stay, watch and suffer from the continued downward spiral which began in Jan of 2001.

True Democrat. I do not believe Obama's would do the same if Hillary had won the primaries. I see the Clinton haters are trying to get nicer now that they need the Clintons. It is too bad Obama could not swallow his pride and selected Hillary as VP. The Democrats would have won by a landslide. Now, I think the Repub's might win the General Election. Obama has no one to blame but himself and his vicious supporters.

Amy   September 8th, 2008 9:11 pm ET

Why is Obama going to be there? Didn't the Reverend Wright say (on 9/16/01) that the America's policies were coming home to roost and that we deserved 9/11? And Obama continued in Wright's church for another 7 years? How disrepectful that Obama would even show his face.

His appearance at ground zero is an insult to all who died that day.

You need to check out you posts before you post such lies here. Bill Clinton responded to every attack or in the case of the World Trade building attack in 1993, they arrested the Blind Shiek and he is still in prison. The Cole attack happened in October 2000 but it wasn't determined that bin Laden did it until after GWB took over in January. GWB decided NOT to respond to it. Not a good decision.

It's elections like this that turn normal people like me into a rabid partisan, and it's wrong, very wrong. CNN and the other media outlets need to show some backbone and grille these folks who want to commandeer the USA. There is no entertainment/ratings value here.

After the lights go out and the mikes are cut, we still ALL have to live here, and sleep at night, which cannot what the mainstream media can be doing. Obama has been heavily vetted fort most of his life as a Black man, and Sarah Palin, if she is to be taken seriously must be vetted in kind. You folks cannot tell me that you're willing to go thru another 4 years of this crap where the great nation of ours has become a shadow of our former selves.

This way of blocking, dodging, avoiding hard questioning of Palin is a detriment to the process, to the nation and to people of all stripes, Republican, Democrat, Independent, etc.

This world is at a tipping point. Oil issues, terrorism, and very quietly, a global water shortage, on top of global warming, locusts, well you get it.

This may stop the polls moving. In Colorado Springs, Sarah Palin claimed that lending giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac had "gotten too big and too expensive to the taxpayers." Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are private corporations. The taxpayers are getting screwed by the takeover, not being saved from it. Its pretty sad when I know that and the potential VP doesn't. "How fitting! John McCain should be there. He ais the only one of the three that ever defended our country."

McCain is no more fitter to be at Ground Zero than anyone else. He was bombing North Vietnam, got shot down by the North Vietnamese, became POW and that was it. With due respect, he didn't exactly fight a pitch battle anywhere in our country in order to defend America from the North Vietnamese attack.

Let's have some perspectives instead of citing the Republican party lines.

Have we dropped our stanard so low that lying is acceptable? We used to set the standard. I now see that it has all gone away.

obama-biden 2008   September 8th, 2008 7:40 pm ET

sarah palin is a liar, and the media is just not revealing her dirty underground works, the media wants to make her a popular figure, so that Obama supporters (the majority of Americans) would again watch CNN, so that CNN can make money out of this whole thing, but the truth is, after the election is over, it's us, the people of AMerica that have to suffer. So, make your choices wisely in this election, we don't need 8 more years of the same policies that has put our country in trillions of dollars of debt, and has brought our dollar far lower than it used to be 10 years ago. Now even the Canadian dollar is worth more than the American dollar, where is our country going ? People wake up, don't fall for these stupid media frenzy, look at the issues our country is facing, and Obama and the democrats are the right choice, we need a new generation of leadership, not McCain-Palin. Palin is good lookin, but this is not a beauty contest for god's sake. Wake up America, Vote for Obama-Biden. God Bless America.

Hey I heard Monica was going to be in New York as well. That would make for some excitement.

Obama is risky and it is a gamble for him to say he would protect us and our values.

Only one candidate will do both. McCain will protect our country and our values. I don't know why Mr. Dean and the DNC picked Obama for contender but come to find out he is only a pretender.

People in the mid west know what Obama thinks of them. They voted in droves for Hillary and against Obama. Now Obama is trying to get their votes. Amazing. And he called the Mid Westerners bitter people and people that he really didn't like because they cling to God and Guns in hard times. Let me tell Mr. Obama something. I am not bitter , but a fighter. I love my God and my guns.

I see better days ahead and they will be ushered in by our new President of the US of A John S, McCain

You know...I laugh at Obama and his bots. I can't remember how many post I read that Obama didn't need Hillary/Bill democrats. Yet...now it seems they do. Sarah doesn't seem like a bad choice in that it has brought the Repubs. together. The Obama/Biden ticket didn't. One thing I heard over and over again was about Hill's debt. Well...she still has one. Instead of helping Obama...maybe she should take time to raise money for her debt. Remember...Obama is all about change and doesn't need the Clintons. I think he and his Obamabots were suffering from reading all of the positive articles and thought that they ruled the world alone. News flash...no man is an island. (Oh...that to talk down about a small town/mayorship and gov. experience of a small pop. state is very bad business.) If you don't have respect for people in your own country, how can we expect you to respect other countries?

the other blog was closed so i decided to post this on this one. someone said that mccain had never requested an earmark at all during his whole career so i decided to do some research of my own. and speaking of which obama has publicaly stated how many earmarks he's requested and did hesitate to do so which he's tryin to be honest with the people while palin and mccain lie. i figured that mccain had at least one earmark skeleton in his closet and low and behold here it is. this is from the washington post.

practice of earmarking, where lawmakers insert money for special projects into congressional appropriations bills. The Arizona Republican now running for president has routinely tried to highlight such spending provisions as wasteful "political pork" and last year year he called the rapid rise of earmarks during Republicans' decade-long control of Congress "disgraceful."

"If we don't stop the earmarking, we're not going to stop the abuses of power here in Washington," McCain told his colleagues.

It turns out, McCain may not have always been so averse to earmarks.

As part of a story published today on the McCain campaign's efforts to woo lobbyists and their big money client The Washington Post reviewed years of the senator's official correspondence to agencies that have been released over the years under the Freedom of Information Act.

That review located this 1992 letter in which McCain privately pressed the Republican administration of President Bush's father, George H.W. Bush, to secure such a $5 million earmark for a wastewater project in Arizona after Congress had rejected the request in its own spending bill. Spurned by his colleagues, McCain took his case to the head of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

"I would like to request that EPA either re-program $5 million out of existing funds or earmark the amount from an appropriate account," McCain wrote in his Oct. 9, 1992 letter to then-EPA Administrator William K. Reilly, calling the earmark "crucial to protecting the public health and the environment."

Reilly wrote back a few months later - in the final days of the first Bush administration - saying his agency had "no options with which to fund this project."

I don't understand why now after 16 months of Obama saying that Hillary is more of the same. Obama has nothing but distant himself from Bill Clinton during the campaign, and now his tugging on their coat tales, crying, please help me, I need you now. What a joke Obama is turning out to be.

Hillary Clinton should have been the democratic nominee and we wouldn't be in this terribly mess that the DNC has caused. Hillary was the stronger and smarter nominee. DNC has stuck us this crying for help Obama. Wrong selection, so I guess we will lose again.

Independentandlovingit   September 8th, 2008 6:25 pm ET

On another Blog:
ABOUT SARAH PALIN
I am a resident of Wasilla, Alaska. I have known Sarah since 1992.
Everyone here knows Sarah, so it is nothing special to say we are on a
first-name basis. Our children have attended the same schools. Her
father was my child's favorite substitute teacher. I also am on a
first name basis with her parents and mother-in-law. I attended more
City Council meetings during her administration than about 99% of the
residents of the city.

She is enormously popular; in every way she’s like the most popular
girl in middle school. Even men who think she is a poor choice and
won't vote for her can't quit smiling when talking about her because
she is a "babe".

It is astonishing and almost scary how well she can keep a secret. She
kept her most recent pregnancy a secret from her children and parents
for seven months.

She is "pro-life". She recently gave birth to a Down's syndrome baby.
There is no cover-up involved, here; Trig is her baby.

She is energetic and hardworking. She regularly worked out at the gym.

She is savvy. She doesn't take positions; she just "puts things out
there" and if they prove to be popular, then she takes credit.

Her husband works a union job on the North Slope for BP and is a
champion snowmobile racer. Todd Palin’s kind of job is highly
sought-after because of the schedule and high pay. He arranges his
work schedule so he can fish for salmon in Bristol Bay for a month or
so in summer, but by no stretch of the imagination is fishing their
major source of income. Nor has her life-style ever been anything
like that of native Alaskans.

Sarah and her whole family are avid hunters.

She's smart.

Her experience is as mayor of a city with a population of about 5,000
(at the time), and less than 2 years as governor of a state with about
670,000 residents.

During her mayoral administration most of the actual work of running
this small city was turned over to an administrator. She had been
pushed to hire this administrator by party power-brokers after she had
gotten herself into some trouble over precipitous firings which had
given rise to a recall campaign.

Sarah campaigned in Wasilla as a “fiscal conservative”. During her 6
years as Mayor, she increased general government expenditures by over
33%. During those same 6 years the amount of taxes collected by the
City increased by 38%. This was during a period of low inflation
(1996-2002). She reduced progressive property taxes and increased a
regressive sales tax which taxed even food. The tax cuts that she
promoted benefited large corporate property owners way more than they
benefited residents.

The huge increases in tax revenues during her mayoral administration
weren’t enough to fund everything on her wish list though, borrowed
money was needed, too. She inherited a city with zero debt, but left it
with indebtedness of over $22 million. What did Mayor Palin encourage
the voters to borrow money for? Was it the infrastructure that she said
she supported? The sewage treatment plant that the city lacked? or a

You HAVE a good point. Bush had a chance too, why did he invade Iraq? We could have CRUSHED the damaged Al Qaeda forces in Afghanistan. Now, they have re-grouped and morphed with more power.

I don't care who he or she might or might not be. Obama is a nothing. He offers nothing. He has no plans, just talk, talk, talk.

We created this monster – how dare you accuse Bill Clinton of being responsible for this!! Bush protecting this country? The world hates us, there have been over 30,000 Iraqi civilian deaths since the war, over 4,000 of our troups have died and for what? Is he caught? Is the threat over? There is just as much of a threat as ever. These people don't play conventional warfare – they are like mosquitos. You can't win a war with radicals who have no respect for their own lives.

If Mr. Bill had been taking care of business during his time in office instead of rolling cigars this 9/11 would probabaly not have taken place. When the terrorist bombed the parking lot of the twin towers during Clinton's time in office he just gave them a slap on the hand and said OK that is enough. He never finished the job in the appropriate manner. He should have never pulled the troops out of Afganastan and took care of business the right way. So who gets the blame for the war, Bush? Well, Bush sure is protecting his and our country. What do you have to say about that?

Bush spent 8 years chasing after oil, how is that Clinton's fault?

Obama is winning   September 8th, 2008 3:52 pm ET

Jan from Boca, Obama is winning. You need to ask yourself why McCain needs Palin to go out and speak for him as if he is senile or something. She is like a cheerleader speaking for him, just like his wife holds his arm. We do not need another Nancy in the White House having to pretend that Ronald wasn't senile when he couldn't even remember where he was during the Iran Contra scandal hearing. McCain is acting like he needs this woman to make speeches for him before he talks, how strange is that? Biden does not get up and speak for Obama before he talks to the people. On the other hand, he isn't 72 either, which shows.

This is what it looks like on paper: The U.S., the E.U. and Israel vs. Russia, China, N. Korea, Iran, Syria, Pakistan, most of South America, North Africa.

Deb in Vegas   September 8th, 2008 2:37 pm ET

Aligning Sen. Obama with President Clinton is a great move to continue to unite the Democratic Party.

As someone who voted for Hillary Clinton in the primary and vowed to vote for John McCain out of anger, I realized after the Republican Convention that Sen. McCain has moved far enough to the right for me to lose my appeal for him.

I love President Clinton and will do what he and Sen. Clinton ask of me.

Jack CA   September 8th, 2008 2:34 pm ET

Either McCain or Obama should visit ground zero alone and silently remember the moment. Just as Frank Capra captured the patriotism of a Jimmy Stewart visiting Lincoln's Memorial alone in the dark creaing a personal moment between a man and his nation. Patriotism is a very personal emotion not an advertising campaign and 9/11 is an extremely personal memory not for public display.

What an obscenity – Bill Clinton at Ground Zero. The driveby media won't bring up the fact that he turned down the chance to put Bin Laden behind bars in 1996.... because he 'couldn't think of a reason to hold him'.... . How can he sleep at night?

JM   September 8th, 2008 2:17 pm ET

Why is 9/11 being so politized specially by Bill Clinton? If he did his job responsibly when President and gone after Osama in 1993, especially when he had him in sight, we would not have had 9/11.

He especially should NOT be at ground zero.

Nice to see most comments see Clinton's appearance for what it really is .... an election ploy .... No matter what he says in his speech this is an attempt to sway voters.
Frankly I think it is an unfortunate act by the democrats and one that just begins to make me think how little things will change in Washington, regardless of who gets elected.

Enlightened Voter   September 8th, 2008 2:16 pm ET

McCain All The Way – we know, he has told us a bazillion times about him being a pow however that does not qualify you to be president. I too served ten years, should I be pres too? Also if he is such an honorable soldier then why did he commit treason? Also why does he not support any GI bills to provide them benefits? He's voted against them all. Your a reputhuglican obviously who thinks because a man has served in the military it makes him a patriot, dont cha? Barack has served his country also as a community organizer...

Who can help but notice that BO is not trying to ditch either Clinton now that the polls show he is dead even with McCain?

So much for the Ben-Hur spectacle. A total waste of money.

Lynn in NM   September 8th, 2008 2:15 pm ET

How fitting! John McCain should be there. He is the only one of the three that ever defended our country. Bill ran and Obama didn't think it was important. If Bill Clinton had done his job as President, 9/11 may not have happened. More of the same coming if Obama gets elected. Neither one of them has ever been strong on defense, to my knowledge. The military is only a photo op for those two.

Adrian   September 8th, 2008 2:15 pm ET

Clinton is responsible for 9/11. Why would you bring that idiot there? Hasn't he done enough damage? His phone call to Pakistan allowed Osama to escape death and finance everything that happened on 9/11. His done nothing but damage this country. He should stay away!!!! But, he could start sucking up to Obama in hopes for a job for his wife. That's a good plan Billy. Eat more crow in hopes to financially benefit. Swallow that pride Billy. Hey, while you are at it, show BO how to manipulate our Social Security again and make it appear that you have paid off the deficit. What a crook!!!! Republican Alternative   September 8th, 2008 2:11 pm ET

CNN's Two Segment Series: Revealed McCain/Obama. Despite the tabloid like title it was revealing. I gathered more about Obama and got a very deep insight into the mind and motives behind McCain. I just don’t understand why McCain’s taking the low road to the Whitehouse by exploiting 911, but after watching CNN’s Revealing McCain, I understand him more. He’s been injured, damaged and he is very bitter over his own Republican party for many personal reasons. This election means so much to him for the wrong reasons- Revenge. So he has resorted to using all the nasty political tricks Bush did and has turned against everything he once spoke of during his Straight Talk 2000 to win this round. It’s disturbing.
He picked Palin for the hype distraction she offers, she's very coachable, moldable, and knows how to keep secrets.

Bill C. closed most southern border Armed services bases to let in the illegals . He fought to have NAFTA and many jobs are lost. Obama wants to take away some of our freedoms, start with high schoolers and collage persons. Now both at the "Towers" for a talk on National Security.. . Obama has already promised Canada things about NAFTA per Hilery C. We should not belive either man and what they say for they are not for U.S.A. interests. For them it is tax and spend for them selves, just look and the D. Convention and the fancy 6 million dollars that was spent on that. Obama wants more charity and yet the 6 million dollars spend???? . Also look at Obama's friends who are anit-american and now turns his back on them, you belive that ; shame on you.

Obama supporters can pick on Palin all you want its not going to change the minds of the voters. It comes down to who has the most experience to run this country and that is Mc Cain. More and more people do not want Obama running this country. Even if Palin was to take over she would be more trusting of a person than Obama.
Watch to polls continue to increase for Mc Cain.
I am sick of the Obama supporters TRYING to hurt Mc Cain and Palin with there words.
I still can't figure out how anyone can say that Obama is more qualified to be president than Mc Cain. WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BushWHACKED   September 8th, 2008 2:09 pm ET

We Dems have been Bush whacked twice and the only candidate that we come up with is Obama? Pelosi, Dean and Reid should bear the brunt of this not Obama, not the voters and not the Repubs.

They threw him (Obama) out there although he chose to run and stay in the race and then he's stuck with Biden, which goes against his message of change. Now we want Bill and Hillary to help when at during the Primary we wanted them out of the way.

The DNC is a loser. I will be voting Republican this time around because McCain's has a better education, energy and healthcare plan.

To keep asking more and more people to dig Obama out signals that he's not the candidate for the job.

T he last time i checked, Obama was not sure how Bill CLinton would fit in if he picked Hillary as Vice-President. All of a sudden, he needs Bill's advice.
------–

Pathetic, isn't it? His arrogance and ego fueled by the media led him to think he was some star that cannot be stopped. Whooops! The media has a new best friend.

Now he crawls back to the Clintons – pathetic. It was the bots saying "Go Away" – "We dont need you" – "No more Hillbillies" – "Anyone but Clinton" – "She destroyed the party" – "Yes we CAN!"

Well guess what – no you can't. You put your love for your messiah above the party. You cared more for Obama than you did about having a democrat in the White House. Hillary tried to point this out and she got nothing but your hate.

Beg, plead, whine, cry – it's too late, Obama. You wanted the White House and it's now its our problem. Your pride was greater than the good of this party and the nation.

CO dem turned independent   September 8th, 2008 2:07 pm ET

It's interesting to see how close this race has become. The DNC wanted Obama as its Nominee, and Obama's arrogance kept him from selecting the one person who would have ensured a victory, HRC. This shows how weak the Democratic Party has become. Had Hillary been the nominee, and had Obama waited, and gained more experience in the Senate, we could have had a Democratic President for the next 16 years. Wishful thinking. I have now changed my affilliation to Independent and will vote for the "most qualified person", not as a member who is told who to vote for, even if that individual is not qualified.

Michael in Houston   September 8th, 2008 2:07 pm ET

I am happy to see that Barack Obama and Bill Clinton will meet in private after the 911 rememberance at Ground Zero.

McCain being their aswell is a joke.

He will put on a big act like he cares.

Obama will now have Bill Clinton campaigning for him and this will also bring people out who love Bill Clinton .

Its time for a voter Revolt in November and its time for people like Bill to go on the attack for Obama against McCain and Palin.

Don't let McCain and his Right Wing campaign get away with anyrhing.

Anyone who believes the Clintons actually want BO to win is really gullible. Didn't the dems spend the last year telling us what liars they both were? Billary doesn't owe the party anything but the finger (you know like the one BO blatantly gave Hillary during the campaign).

Alex   September 8th, 2008 2:06 pm ET

Sorry, a McCain/Palin win in 2008 practically ensures that Hillary cannot win in 2012. The 2008 McCain victory ensures a Palin win in 2012 because then she will be MORE experienced than HClinton and any other woman.Obama's biggest problem is that he is a "Pollyanna", going treat my opponent, "NICE". Obama has been the biggest promoter and endorser of McCain with his "McCain's an American Hero" line that McCain started to believe it. McCain can only talk about being a POW, which occurred over 30 years ago. What has he done of significance since then? Oh, 25 years in the Senate (not a stellar record either), part of the Keating 5, cheated on his wife–all things that make him an American Hero. Americans can elect him in November, his win will continue the chaotic situation this nation faces.

souza   September 8th, 2008 2:05 pm ET

It is unfortunate that Obama didn't realize sooner the many great qualities the Clinton's have to offer. The Clinton's owe him nothing and I hope that people see that. It is now Obama's campaign to win people over.
Bill and Hillary are exceptionally intelligent and driven people who have made many contributions in this country and in Africa.
If Hillary was on this Presidential ticket we would not see this contest so close. Which makes me wonder about Obama's ability to get past his ego for the better of the country. I can see no reason other that that to have picked boring 36 years in the system Biden. I don't even bother to read anything about Biden as I could care less.

The media is scared of the Republicans. Just like Bush, when anyone spoke out against him they lost their jobs. This is censorship at its Republican Best.

Sarah Palin and John McCain are LIARS and there is not one news media outlet or journalist willing to call them on this. American Media is a pawn in the Republican game of politics.

She said 'thanks but no thanks' and kept the money for a state that receives more USA government money per capita than any other state in the country.

She was a member of AIP, which wanted to seperate from the USA.

She can not balance a budget. She left her town over $23 million in debt.

News Media is afraid of the Republicans! Once again, they win with FEAR and LIES. This is going to be a repeat of 2000/2004.

just watch on election day, the poor, innder city, rural and young votes are going to be challenged and denied by the Republicans.

No Respect for the USA media... you make us look awful to the rest of the world when we are always standing by our country's free press.

The Republicans are trying to take over our country and we will not stand for it.

Report the Real story on Ms. Palin! She is an liar, a cheater, and a real mean spirited person!

Mike, TX   September 8th, 2008 2:00 pm ET

I wonder how Obama will spin this. If he had been president it wouldn't have happened? The US really caused the terrorists to strike? We've made it worse?

One thing for sure, after Obama is done speaking, America will be solely responsible.

Danny   September 8th, 2008 2:00 pm ET

Bill, I think you have better things to do. You need to defend yourself for letting Osama go away when you were in office. 9/11 happened because you did not go after Osama in Tora Bora. Obama is another joke to say that he has a plan to defend us against terrorists. He has no credentials. He has no resume to defend America. I know that barack Oibama will be exposed in the days to come and it will be a sad end to his campaign.

Past President Bill Clinton......although Hillary may be running around the World tell people she is the actual President of the United States....and you and your administration would like to just get this behind you...Do all of us a favor and New York....STAY HOME....

Scott, Wichita   September 8th, 2008 1:50 pm ET

I am perfectly fine with this, as long as it isn't used as a campaigning event for either party.

Shame on either candidate if they use one of the most horrific events in American history to their advantage.

Whatever   September 8th, 2008 1:49 pm ET

Not long ago, the Clinton's were the most hated couple, now they are the most needed couple. Seems like the dems just can't seem to get it together. Then inner bickering has cost them this election. If Obama had selected Hillary, he wouldn't be behind in the polls. What an arrogant move! The Clinton's are a political dynamic machine and Obama was too blind to see that. How many other mishaps will he miss?

Linda   September 8th, 2008 1:49 pm ET

A 9/11 mwemorial should not become a political event.

Susan - Canada   September 8th, 2008 1:48 pm ET

I am a Canadian and have been looking for posts to see if there were any comments about McCain's camp showing images of 9/11 at their convention....images of the twin towers burning.....

I, as a Canadian, was heartbroken for the families who lost loved ones that terrible day and had to see these images at a "party"...as an American, I would think you would be outraged! The crowd even applauded at the end of it....unbelievable! I would have been stunned into silence and shame.

If Americans vote this president in.....you are complete IDIOTS!!

No more Republicans!!!!

Obama knows full well, that when it comes to security, he is no match for McCain. That's a given...we know it , we see it.

So.....Obama is doing what he has always done. Get himself a prop. Usually in his speeches, it's name dropping. This time, in this appearance in NY, it will be the presence of Bill Clinton.
He will be patting Bill Clinton's back as if they are comrades in arms, old buddies. I hope Bill doesn't forget that this man dissed his wife bigtime and played the race card on him. The things one has to do for party and country. Which brings up another point..........Hillary, DON'T ATTACK PALIN ON PERSONAL ISSUES LIKE THE MEDIA. REMEMBER......18MIL CRACKS AND 2012. JUST SAY NO.

McCain: One Mooseburger with fries and a coke.

MOST IN THE REPUBLICAN PARTY ARE AGENTS FROM HELL   September 8th, 2008 1:45 pm ET

This is good, very good, they need to bury the hatchet and get down to what is most important. Also Hillary did a good job of reminding voters that Palin is not the person we need in office, she no matter how sweetly she present herself is simply more of the same, the same that we are suffering with now. Dispite McSame and Palin's sudden acclamation of change they are most dangerous to the welfare of our great nation and it is only through deception they can prevail,we should not allow ourselves to be distracted by their ploy. Mr. McSame has been in Washington all of these years with nothing but his own promotion in mind, he is an opportunist that sways with the wind and with more study of Palin she is the same. Both being liars who exaggerate everything that comes out of their mouths, just playing the game!

PLEASE DO NOT BE TAKEN IN BY MCSAME OR PALIN, DO YOU HOMEWORK ON BOTH! THIS WOMAN PALIN HAS HIT THE STAGE WITH A MOUTH FULL OF LIES. WHAT DOES THIS SAY ABOUT HER CHARACTER?

Obama/Biden 2008

KATHLEEN   September 8th, 2008 1:43 pm ET

Obama's campaign will need all the help it can get. This election
can come back to haunt us!!!!

The Republicans "plan" on winning. No matter what, they intend to
win. Hannity, Rove, Ann Coulter, Limbaugh on their side, THEY
don't say, "YES WE CAN", they say YES WE WILL.

They are "schooling" Padin every minute of every day. And she will
be sensational during "the debate" with Biden. She will win your
hearts and she can move along and be our next PRESIDENT!
And then, we can all cry for our country's SOLDIERS, Finanancial
Bankruptcy. and our LOST COUNTRY. THIS IS THE MOST SERIOUS
VOTE American will ever have. It can make or break our Country.
And, right now, it is in "dire straights."

People, get to know the truth about the Republican regime. THEY
DO NOT INTEND TO LOSE THIS RACE. Just like Bush-Kerry!
Rove, with dirty rotten lies and deceit, won over the Catholics
Evangelicals, and the people that listened to "soundbytes of how
Bad Kerry was and How Great Bush was.
REMEMBER, REPUBLICANS INTEND TO WIN AT ANY COST!

PADIN IS A TRICKY PLOY. MCCAIN IS LOVING EVERY MINUTE
OF "EDUCATING SARAH".

I am glad Bill will be in NYC on 9/11. He can greet Obama the runner up and McCain our new president at the same time.

Today is the first time in the CNN poll of polls that McCain has an advantage over Obama. A USA poll suggest McCain at 51 % and that is the first time either candidate has crossed the 50% line.

this new poll is terrible news for Obama and I suggest that he withdraw from the race immediately. He is risky, has a funny name and who knows what he would do with our country and our values.

McCain will protect our country and our values.

yen   September 8th, 2008 1:41 pm ET

The Nobama dream is going up in smoke. Time too wake up and vote

Maybe if he had better judgement and put Hillary on the ticket he might would be winning. Too Late its over!!!!! McCain 50% Nobama 46%.

Ray   September 8th, 2008 1:38 pm ET

Where's Bush holed up?

Obama should bring the Clintons and folks like Gen. Wesley Clarke to the forefront because they know how to fight the Republicans.

Is Joe Biden inept? He's running around saying that he can't debate Palin! Old Joe is scared!

Hillary would have been the better choice for real. Biden just dilutes the campaign – anyway, let's see what happens but we don't have the time.

If Obama wants to win, he must bring Gen. Wesley Clarke into his inner circle and allow him to go on the networks to make whatever comments he likes to make. He knows how to attack the Republicans – effectively.

He can do this after the 9/11 ceremony.

On such an event it is good to see Clinton standing up to support Obama. It is time to see that this great nation needs to change. The 9/11 events show how deeply this natin is distrusted in the world. Avoiding other peoples ideas does not bring understanding and acceptance. Obama said he will talk to worl leaders and strive to regain the respect in the world tht Bush lost.

We must become that light that leades to a better world. We must show the world that the blessings we enjoy can be shared by all in peace.

It has been an utter disaster since Bill left office. Bush/McCain have nearly destroyed this country with their wars and tax cuts for the filthy rich.

Now the not so bright American voter wants a 3rd helping?! The world laughs at us.

Perhaps we deserve McCain. All empires crumble from within and perhaps McCain can be the icing on the cake, the nail in the American coffin as far as being a world leader goes. Who cares about Clinton? Change you can count on? This is what I voted for in the primaries. We apparently change our position on the war. changed our position on global trade, and changed our position on tax cuts. We are changing our position with the polls. Where is the DNC? Where are our senior democratic leaders? This is not the change we voted for. We even allowed Mr Obama to change his church. What is going on? Get back on track. We are beating ourselves. No wonder the polls are close

I think that's wonderful. I hate the fact that the GOP uses 9/11 in their politics.
The GOP used the fear generated from the events of 9/11 to frighten voters into electing them in overwhelming numbers to the House and the Senate. This same fear elected Bush the second time.
