Bill Clinton to join McCain, Obama at Ground Zero on 9/11

Bill Clinton will attend the September 11 memorial ceremony at Ground Zero, Thursday.
Bill Clinton will attend the September 11 memorial ceremony at Ground Zero, Thursday.

(CNN) – Bill Clinton will join Barack Obama and John McCain in visiting Ground Zero this Thursday in memory of the victims of September 11, and deliver a speech focused on national security threats.

“But just as we reflect on the past, we must look ahead to ensure we are doing all we can to support families, unite our communities, and protect our country from future acts of terrorism," said the former president in a statement released by his office.

The McCain and Obama campaigns released a joint statement over the weekend announcing that both men will appear together in New York to mark the seventh anniversary of the attacks. The campaigns have also pledged to abstain from all negative campaign ads on that day.

Also Thursday, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama will meet at the former president's Harlem offices - their first extended in-person encounter since the tense primary season.

(UPDATED to clarify McCain and Obama are visiting Ground Zero Thursday, but will not be at the memorial ceremony.)

    Good!

Certainly there is no reason for him to stay home.

Who can help but notice that BO is not trying to ditch either Clinton now that the polls show he is dead even with McCain?

So much for the Ben-Hur spectacle. A total waste of money.

McCain All The Way – we know, he has told us a bazillion times about him being a pow however that does not qualify you to be president. I too served ten years, should I be pres too? Also if he is such an honorable soldier then why did he commit treason? Also why does he not support any GI bills to provide them benefits? He's voted against them all. Your a reputhuglican obviously who thinks because a man has served in the military it makes him a patriot, dont cha? Barack has served his country also as a community organizer...

Nice to see most comments see Clinton's appearance for what it really is .... an election ploy .... No matter what he says in his speech this is an attempt to sway voters.
Frankly I think it is an unfortunate act by the democrats and one that just begins to make me think how little things will change in Washington, regardless of who gets elected.

Why is 9/11 being so politized specially by Bill Clinton? If he did his job responsibly when President and gone after Osama in 1993, especially when he had him in sight, we would not have had 9/11.

He especially should NOT be at ground zero.

What an obscenity – Bill Clinton at Ground Zero. The driveby media won't bring up the fact that he turned down the chance to put Bin Laden behind bars in 1996.... because he 'couldn't think of a reason to hold him'.... . How can he sleep at night?

Either McCain or Obama should visit ground zero alone and silently remember the moment. Just as Frank Capra captured the patriotism of a Jimmy Stewart visiting Lincoln's Memorial alone in the dark creaing a personal moment between a man and his nation. Patriotism is a very personal emotion not an advertising campaign and 9/11 is an extremely personal memory not for public display.

Is Bill Clinton trying to remain viable or something? I mean, who cares? I would think his wife has more business in New York (you know, where she's the senator) with Obama than her husband.

This is just Bill trying to be as cool and Democrat-centerpiece as Al Gore. The dude's probably jealous...

I'd like to see Bush there reinacting his reading of "Mr. Frankie's pet Goat" and his sitting there slack-jawed after realizing his Middle East oil buddies attacked America.

What does Bill want now? You just know that he didn't invite BO to lunch to enjoy a meal!

With BO behind in the polls, Bill wants his pound of flesh to 'Help".

Boy, I'd like to be a fly on the wall to hear what Barak gives away to get the Clinton's help! I'm sure he'll promise ANYTHING... even Bill to be the next Attorney General!

So now both Clintons will be trying to help the cardboard figure that is Obama become president. We love you, Bill and Hillary, but we can't back you up on this one.

Aligning Sen. Obama with President Clinton is a great move to continue to unite the Democratic Party.

As someone who voted for Hillary Clinton in the primary and vowed to vote for John McCain out of anger, I realized after the Republican Convention that Sen. McCain has moved far enough to the right for me to lose my appeal for him.

I love President Clinton and will do what he and Sen. Clinton ask of me.

Why is Bill CLinton going to be at Ground Zero? Is he there to think about how it might have been avoided if he's gone after Bin Laden after the 1993 bombing of the WTC?

Wasn't Bill the one who said "No thanks" to taking custody of Bin Laden? If Bill had said yes, 9/11 might not have happened in the first place...just sayin
