(CNN) – Bill Clinton will join Barack Obama and John McCain in visiting Ground Zero this Thursday in memory of the victims of September 11, and deliver a speech focused on national security threats.
“But just as we reflect on the past, we must look ahead to ensure we are doing all we can to support families, unite our communities, and protect our country from future acts of terrorism," said the former president in a statement released by his office.
The McCain and Obama campaigns released a joint statement over the weekend announcing that both men will appear together in New York to mark the seventh anniversary of the attacks. The campaigns have also pledged to abstain from all negative campaign ads on that day.
Also Thursday, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama will meet at the former president's Harlem offices - their first extended in-person encounter since the tense primary season.
(UPDATED to clarify McCain and Obama are visiting Ground Zero Thursday, but will not be at the memorial ceremony.)

Geez, Bill just cannot get over himself. Now he has to put himself into the setting of one of the 2 people that are going to be our future president. I think McCain should insist that Pres Bush should be there too and make this a real circus.
Obama should have picked Hillary.
CLINTON VOTERS 4 MAC/PALIN 2008 TO GET
FORMER FIRST LADY AND JUNIOR NEW YORK DEMOCRATIC SENATOR HILLARY DIANE RODHAM CLINTON FOR PRESIDENT 2012!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
palin wont be there 'speaking in tongues'?
The way McCain is dividing the country right now with his "us versus them, small town versus urban, white versus everyone else" is the same way he will divide the world. He will tell all of our allies to chose a side, and he will force anyone who disagrees with us to ally with eachother for one final World War. This is what it looks like on paper: The U.S., the E.U. and Israel vs. Russia, China, N. Korea, Iran, Syria, Pakistan, most of South America, North Africa.
McBush/Dick Palin '08!!!
BILL AND HILLARY CLINTON ARE TOO GOOD FOR BARACK OBAMA. WHAT OBAMA, THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY AND THE MEDIA DID TO HILLARY AND BILL IS UNFORGIVEABLE AND UNFORGETABLE.
I THINK OBAMA AND HIS GANG OF PEOPLE THAT ARE FULL OF HATE AND OF BIAS WILL FIND OUT IN NOVEMBER ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. WE THE AMERICAN PEOPLE CAN SEE RIGHT THROUGH THEM. WE ARE TIRED OF THE HATE AND BIAS MESSAGE.
I WANT HILLARY TO BE THE SECRETARY OF STATE.
"Enlightened Voter September 8th, 2008 12:23 pm ET
Why is mccain going to be there?"
Then why is Obama going?
Hey Gary.....I think you need another drink of Kool Aid !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Are we going to hear how Obama considered joining the military.
Defend the United States??? If I recall, Iraq didn't attack us!
Yeah, get Bill out there! He and Hillary are the very best political minds we have, and they, unlike the Republicans, know how to stay on message and not just bash their opponents. Palin is an out and out liar, McCain little better. I sure hope that Charlie Gibson calls her out on the bridge lie, and maybe people will finally look beyond the lipstick and high heels. What a joke for VP!
That a boy, Bill. To the "uppity "Republicans, I say Solidarity.

Please please please,
Biden is a great guy, but please step down. Obama you won fair and square, but please, give Hillary the Veep spot, she got half the votes. Do this and clinch the election. Stay on your current course and the situation becomes much more iffy. Don't you want to see Hillary debate Palin..... think about it. Think about all the populists out here who want a fighter. Think about the voters who have 'brand' loyalty and remember the 90's. C'mon.... please please please don't blow this Barack.
McCain didn't really "fight" for us. Wasn't he captured fairly soon into his deployment?
And who cares, anyway. War is never the answer-it just makes more problems, financial, mental, physical, more enemies....if we could learn to talk and negotiate, but no, since Bush we have to wield the big guns and intimidate. That's why Palin fits in so well-she is a master at intimidation and firing people who disagree. The Republican party has lost its way, and I pray that America sees the light and lets the Democrats clean up after them once again!
I'm actually shocked Obama and his hateful supporters would dare to show their face to Bill or Hillary, much less come crawling asking them to please help him get elected. Just goes to show you that the Clinton's are certainly the bigger people here. Obama refused to pick her because he was pouting, well he deserves just what he gets now.
It is an Insult to America for Bill to stand at ground zero and give a speech about national defense. Why doesn't he tell every one why he didn't go after bin laden when he attacked the first time. Or when another country offered to deliver him Clinton said no thanks.
Please, Please, oh please

It's amazing this article is about national unity and yet people commenting on here can't help but to post their snide little remarks about how much they hate McCain or Obama. It's like you're all so dense you can't even read the article to understand what it's about.
Your the best Bill and Hillary. Good luck to you both. Don't let them dog you into doing what you don't want to do for Obama . We all know the truth and they are regretting it as we write.
I have to say I feel sorry for Obama... his supporters will be the reason he loses... people like Enlightened Voter rabid and empty hate for anything non obama turns people off ...
If Mr. Bill had been taking care of business during his time in office instead of rolling cigars this 9/11 would probabaly not have taken place. When the terrorist bombed the parking lot of the twin towers during Clinton's time in office he just gave them a slap on the hand and said OK that is enough. He never finished the job in the appropriate manner. He should have never pulled the troops out of Afganastan and took care of business the right way. So who gets the blame for the war, Bush? Well, Bush sure is protecting his and our country. What do you have to say about that?
This is the one person the McCain Campaign does not want to see on the trail.
Why taint the occasion with Bill there?
