The presidential race remains close with just 57 days left until the election.

(CNN) — Why is the presidential race dead even after both parties have had their conventions? In a nutshell, it's because the conventions have not changed the basic dynamic of the race.

Earlier: CNN poll shows race dead even

New numbers released by CNN Monday explain just how the presidential race remains so close with 57 days to go until voters weigh in at the polls: the conventions were so successful for both parties that that each essentially canceled the other out.

The candidates' favorable ratings are identical (60 percent) — and almost identical to what they were before the conventions began. The GOP convention made Republicans more enthusiastic (an increase of 17 points). But Democrats are more enthusiastic as well (up 14 points), so an 11 point "enthusiasm gap" favoring remains: 71 percent of Democrats say they are enthusiastic about the election, compared to 60 percent of Republicans.

The candidates' strengths and weaknesses on the issues also have not changed over the last month — Obama retains his edge on the economy and health care; McCain's advantage remains on Iraq and terrorism.

Full poll results [PDF]

In fact, the Iraq issue is instructive of just how effectively the conventions molded public opinion. Before the Democratic convention, McCain had a 9-point edge; after the Democratic convention it was a tie, and now McCain has a 14-point lead on Iraq.

But not every convention theme appears to have resonated — although the GOP convention portrayed McCain as a maverick reformer, more Americans see Obama as a "real reformer" (48-41 percent) and as someone who is "not a typical politician" (56-34 percent)

Who would Americans be prouder to have as president? That's a tie — 46 percent say Obama, 44 percent say McCain, despite the emphasis on McCain's war record at the GOP gathering in Minnesota. On the other hand, McCain may have managed to best Obama on values (49 percent say McCain is more likely to share their values compared to 45 percent for Obama; in mid-August Obama had a 4-point margin on that measure).

It appears McCain was able to gain some ground on "change," a theme that the Obama campaign has long called its own. But in the wake of McCain's pick of Washington outsider Sarah Palin, the Arizona senator has narrowed Obama's lead on that item from 18 points to 8.

CNN Polling Director Keating Holland says both party's conventions clearly had their desired effect.

"Although McCain's acceptance speech did not get the same rave reviews as Obama's speech, the two conventions appear to have had the same overall effect — 48 percent said that the GOP convention made them more likely to vote for McCain, 51 percent said the same about the Democratic convention and Obama," he said.

But even as polls tighten in McCain's favor, a slim majority (52 percent) of Americans still think Obama will win in November.

"We'll see if that number changes later this fall once the public sees the latest round of polls," Holland said.

WHY???

I'll let McCain answer this one…

McCain, " Don't quote me but I think Americans are stupid. If they vote for Bush twice I think I can play them once more for the road."

CNN POST THIS!!!

and Stop being afraid of McCain camp. They said that media is bias and your hands are tigh and you don't let us post what is on our mind???

xddy4u   September 8th, 2008 5:46 pm ET

It's not the election I'm worried about, it's the polling places. Obama should start now checking to make sure if paper ballots are used there are enough at the polling places. The DEMs are going to swamp the polls, and there are going to be some serious irregularities going on to keep the DEMs from voting. Just mark me. there is no way McCain can win, no way, so the RNC are going to try and pull some down right dirty tricks to keep Obama supporters from voting.

Pam   September 8th, 2008 5:44 pm ET

Those pictures are very telling. One is supporting Obama, the other isn't supporting McCain, it's just against Obama. What's wrong cowboy dude, couldn't bring yourself to put on a pro-McCain button?

Go to electoral-vote.com
It will tell you who is leading in electoral votes. Obama has Calif, NY, IL PA, MI, Wisc and Min tied up. He comes up with 331 electorial votes!!! 270 needed to win. The majority of the population understands what a fraud and lier he and Pelin are!!!!! For America to survive we desperately need Obama/Biden!!!!

Kate   September 8th, 2008 5:42 pm ET

Wow….I didn't want to believe that the American people were really THIS stupid. But if McCain is tied with Obama…if after 8 years of this nonsense half of the country wants to elect for 4 more…well, then I guess I was wrong. Pathetic.

Obama is using Hillary and Bill to win the election that Hillary should be in!

He's making promises to Hillary about her campaign debt but only if she and Bill do what he says to help get him out of the sinking poll ratings! He's going to do it right up to November 4th and he didn't even give Hillary serious consideration to be on the ticket!

No r.e.s.p.e.c.t. ! NObama!

Woman from Texas   September 8th, 2008 5:41 pm ET

She is a fraud. She thinks Iraq is a "task from God", that the Alaska pipeline won't happen until the people of Alaska's hearts are "right with God". She LIED about the Bridge to Nowhere (she still kept the money) and collected and hired a lobbyist for Wasilla. She taxed people's groceries to pay for that hockey arena that left Wasilla in major debt. She is an extremist religiously and socially.

I am a strong woman and I wasn't for Hillary, but this woman pales in comparison to Hillary. Hillary looks like the super candidate next to this whackjob.

I admire Sen. Obama for what he is trying to do. To get as far as he has gotten is quiet remarkable. But I must say that I think Sen. Obama will be kicking himself if the election comes down to the state of Virginia, and Sen. McCain somehow found a way to win that state. I am sure Sen. Obama will be saying to himself that he should have picked Gov. Tim Kaine, or Sen. Jim Webb of Virginia to be his running mate. I would be a 100% sure that would have put Sen. Obama over the top to win the election. I am just hoping the American people will not fall into the REPUBLICAN TRAP, and vote for someone WHO HAS VOTED WITH PRESIDENT BUSH 90% of the time on critical issues that effect the lives of 300 million Americans.

HOW DID THE Religious Right take over this country??????

rich o   September 8th, 2008 5:40 pm ET

I suspect that the reason that McCain's RNC speech had higher ratings then Obama's DNC speech is that liberals are more likely to listen to both sides but conservatives are more likely only to listen to their side. Example: I watch CNN, MSNBC, and Fox News but the conservative who sits next to me only watches Fox.

I thought John McCain did a decent job – the press set the bar pretty low. I thought that Barack Obama did a great job – the press set the bar pretty high.

I support Obama but expect McCain to win. This country, after all, elected George W. Bush twice; so I don't expect much from my fellow citizens. Plus, here in PA, I'm hearing a lot of racist stuff, as in, "I have never voted for a republican in my life but I ain't voting for a black guy." If Obama was white this wouldn't even be a contest.

Bob   September 8th, 2008 5:38 pm ET

To the blogger who said this of Palin: "No interviews required because if she opens her mouth "unfiltered" she would struggle to answer questions intelligently."

Wow. Have you heard Obama "unfiltered" and without hs prepared speech in front of him?? Quite a bit of difference compared to when he's practiced in front of a mirror…that should tell you something.

You know…we, the dems., could have had a dream ticket. I believe ego got in the way. In addition, there seemed to be a sense of unfair play for how both the dnc and media handled the dem. party electorials. In addition, a lot of Obamabots spoke really vial things to Clinton supporters. But wait…now you need us all. Really? I thought that he could do it all on his own. He didn't need the Clintons. They symbolize a part of Washington that needs to be changed. But wait…the message has now changed. You pick a vp that has been in congress for more yrs than McCain. You get the support of the Ted. Kennedy and family. And now…you want hill and bill to help you get elected. This is funny. Where is the message of change that I have heard soooooooooo much about? That's right…it's all about changing your position whenever the weather changes. A change we can believe in. LOL

I beleive we are going to see just how smart law makers are and start to appreciate them for their law degrees which have prepared them for the job they have to tackle.

Don't get me wrong because I believe a regular mom or dad can make a decent congressperson, senator or President. But with that said, lawyers have to learn about various subjects and thus have a greater understanding of how local national and global business and governmental systems work. This is crammed into 2 to 3 years of learning and then they enter the work world and learn more through experiences they choose to be involved.

Sara's mistake when given the microphone on Freddie and Fannie Mae is just one complex area we are asking this lady to learn.

U.S. taxes are far more complex than Alaskan taxes alone because you have more involved than just the immediate borders. Other areas we are asking Sarah to learn and be somewhat knowledgeable are economics, jobs and jobs growth, energy issues other than oil and gas, educational issues, social security issues, health issues – the big monster, equal pay for equal work for women, foreign policy issues – this involves the entire world not just being close to Russia, other national issues, creating jobs, law and government policies etc. We want her to cram all this knowledge in 2 months let alone 4 years or possibly 8. She may be able to do it, but we all doubt it. McCain can't even handle this and he's been in the senate for 26 years.

Bottom line is republican Americans would rather put a dumbed down white person (GW Bush for example) into the White House rather than a black man in 2008. Times have changed, but not that much. We still prefer dumbies.

Independent in DC   September 8th, 2008 5:31 pm ET

NEWSFLASH: National polls don't win elections. Ask Al Gore. By all accounts, Obama is ahead in electoral votes. The keys to his victory will be Michigan, Virginia and either Colorado or New Mexico. He doesn't even need Ohio and Florida.

Bob   September 8th, 2008 5:31 pm ET

What is the Obama campaign's current "message of hope"????? All they're doing is attacking. They are on the defensive. If there truly IS substance behind the Obama style, NOW is the time to see it. Or would you rather just continue to take the low road and attack Palin??

Not EVERYBODY in America is soundbyte-oriented and has the attention span of a gnat; many of us actually think about things and so we DO notice when the content isn't there. That's why Obama is losing his edge. More and more people realize the "emperor's clothes are missing".

Mick   September 8th, 2008 5:29 pm ET

This is not rocket science…Obama is a spender and he's ready to spend your hard earned bucks! When running against Hillary he spent nearly 3 times as much as she and he barely had an edge…now, he's spending more, not giving back to the communities, and he will continue to do so in the White House should he be so lucky to get that far. Additionally, his choice of Biden is a CLEAR REMINDER that OBAMA is a "typical politician".

Use the abortion issue…as if women really "want" to have abortions! If you mongrels were more supportive of women we wouldn't have to choose!

I personally feel that john mccain will do absolutely anything to win this election, well should i say his supporting cast will, because it's more than obvious that mccain is not in control of anything regarding his party, that was plainly obvious with his vice presidential pick. I really wonder how john mccain truely feels about women being in power. Sarah Palin is being used by the republican party, and is being used by john mccain, is this what politics has truely come too, lieing to the american people, as a matter of fact this isn't even about Barack Obama and John McCain, it's about Barack Obama and Sarah Palin, republican party can you stoop any lower.

If you liked Bush- you will love McCain   September 8th, 2008 5:26 pm ET

Les you might want to check you facts

Obama hasn't asked for any earmarks this year. Last year, he asked for $311 million worth, about $25 for every Illinois resident. Alaska asked this year for earmarks totaling $198 million, about $295 for every Alaska citizen.

Palin has cut back on pork project requests, but under her administration, Alaska is still and by far the largest per-capita consumer of federal pet-project spending.

Funny   September 8th, 2008 5:26 pm ET

No-bama, change? What change? Does he or Biden have an original idea or any specific other than changing the USA into a Socialist or Marxist nation? Oh, that's right….Biden was unceremoniously booted from the 1988 presidential campaign in large part due to his law school plagiarism. Guess maybe he'll have to "hit the books" for some good ideas.

Michael, North Carolina   September 8th, 2008 5:26 pm ET

I feel that when comparing the amount of money that Sen. Obama has raised vs Sen. McCain it should be a no brainer. Sen. Obama has out performed Sen. McCain in every way. Just as Rollin Martin said the polls do not matter at this point. What counts is what is happening on the ground in the key battle ground states. In my opinion it is going to come down to Colorado, and Virginia. If Sen. Obama can get one of these two states, he will be the next president of the United States.

I would like your help with something:…..A poster here signed "James" says that we should look out for the "race card" that Obama pulls out every now and then. I work and run a household so I can't watch the News 24/7 so I've missed him pulling out this card. Everything I have heard about his race has come from the media, not him. But could you maybe tell me where I could pick one up? A race card? Being a life long non-card carrying African American, I think that it just may have come in handy in the past, if I had only had one. So if you know of a website or place where I could sign up….I would apprieciate it very much. Just think, working my way through college, serving in the military etc….working hard for everything I have and helping so many along the way…could have been avoided if I had just gotten my card! Dang! Who knew, and why wasn't I told?!?!

Jeff, Az   September 8th, 2008 5:24 pm ET

Obama is still way ahead in the Electoral college polls, and his lead will surely grow once the debates begin. Obama will look presidential and McCain will not. In the VP debates, Palin will actually have to answer questions……if she is still on the ticket.

Fannie / Freddie "too expensive for the tax payers"

1. Fannie and Freddie not owned by the Feds.
2. The next administration will need to actually know something about the mortgage crisis.

Palin should not be allowed anywhere near the White House!

She is an extreme religious fundalmentalist.

She lied about being a major corruption foe (she accepted campaign contributions in the same fundraising scheme at the center of a public corruption scandal that led to the indictment of Sen. Ted Stevens). She lied about being against earmarking (she requested $27 Million for tiny Wasilla – even McCain criticized her). She lied about her initial support for the Bridge to Nowhere (only reversing her opinion when it became politicially beneficial to do so). She does not support alternate energy sources. She is anti-environmental. She even lied about winning Miss Congeniality!

Extreme is an understatement.

So you really want a "Warrior For God" one heartbeat away from our nuclear arsenal? I thought unstable, belligerent religious extremists were our enemies…not our representatives.

How gullible are we? The RNC reveled in its sarcasm, proudly expounded on the virtue of tax cuts and deregulation, ignoring the disastrous consequences of tax cuts for the wealthy, deregulation and high defecits since 1981. Their self-serving policies have been tried and exposed as the fraud that they are. They have zero credibility after lying about everything under the sun and looting our treasury through subsidies and giveaways, various financial scandals and of course, the great reduction on taxing capital. But they call themselves mavericks and reformers and suddenly they are in the mix. Will we never learn?

CNN's poll of polls is misleading. Two of the three polls they consider were before the RNC ended. McCain is up five to ten points over Obama according to polls taken after the RNC. Why won't CNN report this?

How about thinking Fannie and Freddie are owned by the Government? So being a governor of Alaska qualifies her with executive experience. HA HA. My ten year old knows more than this Hockey Mom and he's not even running for VP

steve dumford, Scotts valley ca.   September 8th, 2008 5:17 pm ET

Notice on most of these stories on the ticker that the Obamabots seem to be in full panic mode. When McCain goes up in the polls the bots start getting this warning…"cannot compute" "cannot compute" "cannot Compute "Can………………." CNN doesn't want to report the Gallup Poll that has McCain up by 6 points and up by 9 amongst "likely voters."
Obamabots have resorted to what they did to Hillary in the primary. You could almost count on every comment starting with calling her a liar. Now they all want her to fight Palin for Obama. Forget it. She ain't gonna do it. He'll have to fight for himself.
They're all in a frenzy over the bridge thing. Of course Obama hasn't flip flopped on anything but….let me see…….Offshore drilling….NAFTA…..whether the troop surge worked…….rescinding tax cuts for the wealthy…….the Patriot Act……..and, Oh, I forgot….he once thought about joining the military.
For one thing the Dems messed up when they dumped on Hillary and "chose" Obabibi. Then Obama messed up when he didn't choose Hillary for VP. If he had, McCain wouldn't have been able to choose Palin without looking like a copycat, he would have had to choose some other stodgy politician. So much for Obamas 'judgement." Looks like he judged wrong. Oh well, he'll have alot of time to be :present' in the Senate.

Survival of the Fittest   September 8th, 2008 5:16 pm ET

CNN…and the media: why can't you report on who Sara Palin is: she cut funds for sex education including abstinence-only programs and see where her daughetr is? She cut funds for children with special needs and yet, shamelessly puts her baby out there appealing to our sympathy and votes? An investigative report would be good, then you will see different results in your polls.

Frodo   September 8th, 2008 5:16 pm ET

imagine what the media would have to talk about if these polls were illegal…

Based on their current content it would be 50 days from now of crickets chirping. They don't do analysis, they just talk about this poll, that poll, what we think about the poll, what others think about the poll. poll.poll.poll….

ouch.

NOOBAMA

Bob   September 8th, 2008 5:15 pm ET

It's really pretty simple.

People (except for the Obama fanatics/Republican haters) are realizing the following:

1) McCain is NOT the same thing as Bush, no matter how "clever" some of the Dem bloggers get (McSame, McBush, McShame, McWar)…etc. It's really pretty McSilly.

2) McCain realizes that the Republican Party needs to change, and he couldn't have been more clear of that in his acceptance speech.

3) McCain is very experienced and will change things up.

4) Palin is smart, change-oriented and pretty down to earth. And NOT evil like some scared Dems would have you believe.

5) Obama is a very gifted speaker, but the "bloom has come off the rose" with him. Except for the Kool-Aid drinkers, most people see him as about the same level of caliber as McCain, but with less experience.

Overall, the McCain/Palin ticket is seen as JUST as viable as the Obama/Biden ticket. Some Obama fanatics can't except this, and of COURSE that means folks are racist (vs. realists). But keep clicking your heels and praying and maybe you won't wake up.

The problem is, none of you have th eguts to ask her (and McCain) any meaningful questions. In other words, do your work as journalists should.

BJ   September 8th, 2008 5:12 pm ET

While it may be true that the VP pick has energized the Republican base and boosted the poll numbers for now, I just don't see how the change argument will hold up. Change? What a surprise that a republican candidate picked a running mate who is under investigation for ethics violations and is as far to the right as George Bush. I can't believe that they're trying to say she's a change agent and a maverick because she held other members of her own party accountable for their behavior a few times. Isn't that what party members should be doing? And what about her record? Is she for or against earmarks I can't tell. She says she's against them but her bahavior says otherwise. Was she for the bridge to nowhere or against it. I can't tell either. Granted she has some limited "executive experience" but then again so did George Bush. And after listening to her acceptance speech it was clear that this "bulldog with lipstick" will continue to perpetuate the divisive atmosphere that permeates Washington and poisons the political process. Change? Give me a break!

McCain is not only speaking to those that believe in every word he says (like Obama) but ALL AMERICANS

McCain is not perfect but then Obama only gives speeches to those who think Obama is.

Haven't those Obama supporters ever heard the phrase 'if its too good to be true IT IS' (no wonder internet fraud is so profitable for crooks)

The only poll that matters is on Election Day (and it's not the exit polls).

The ballots are the real poll. It's clear that polls have been put together to sway the vote. Each organization reports totally different numbers, and strangely they usually support the bias of the particular media reporting the numbers. Or rather, the media shops around for numbers that they use to support their case.

Unfortunately, people put value in the polls–especially the exit polls which sways the west coast when voting.

How about we all, as Americans, Everyone, Democrats, republicans, libertarians, independents, greens, whigs…

EVERYONE make a pact here and now to

NEVER ANSWER A POLLSTER ABOUT AN ELECTION. We can return democracy to America!! Yes we can!

A comedian as President?   September 8th, 2008 5:11 pm ET

Hillary broke through the 'male only' presidential candidates club, so McCain thinks just any creationist woman will do for v.p. to get him some votes from women voters. Sarah Palin does brighten up his lackluster slate, but she is more of a 'hockey mom' than national leader. When she cracks those one-liners, I just can't help but see her as nothing more than a glitzy stand-up comedian doing her female politician schtick. The thought of her being behind ole geezer McCain, just a heartbeat away from replacing the oldest person to ever run for the office, should scare any rational person. Palin does not believe in evolution, or that humans caused global warming, or in a woman's right to choose. I guess McCain-cient thought Sarah Palin was more qualified for v.p. than Tom Ridge. Sorry Mac, I am voting for Obama now that you've stuck her in our faces. She is ready to be the president, the president of her local school board.

Of course Palin's claim to stop the bridge to nowhere is a lie. Most of what little she says is a lie, or a gross exaggeration at the very least.

Trouble is, nobody's listening to Obama any more. He is suddenly the Establishment candidate. We've got "mavericks" now.

Add to that his constantly shifting positions, and you've got John McCain and the Deer Hunter in the White House.

Oh, well. Today the Gallup Poll, which includes cell phone, came up with McCain 50% – Obama 46%! CNN keeps calling that and others "tied." No, that is not a tie, folks. That is the squashing of Obama's so called "bounce." The Ben Hur event was just erased in a day.

Obama: "Hillary standing next to me as VP – or – Hillary sitting next to me next term in the Senate."

That was the choice, and BO made it – trouble is he made the wrong one…

Now I and so many others will probably have to put up with McCain for 4 years because of Barry's enormous ego.

Clinton is out there, but she is not a candidate. It's up to the duly SELECTED candidates to make their case successfully. Nobody will be voting for Clinton this fall, so her power to "change" the outcome is minimized.

With luck we'll have Hillary to look forward to, NOT a rerun of BO. If he loses, watch the Democrats gobble him up. They have a bad habit of eating their young…

Big D   September 8th, 2008 5:09 pm ET

I am appalled at anyone who bounced over to support McCain and Palin after the RNC convention. That convention was all negative – filled with lies and smears and distortions. Palin's speech was the worst. She mocked and insulted, lied and distorted, wthout any suggestions or solutions or proposals or plans. So why would anyone bounce over to support them? The DNC convention was filled with hope and inspiration, plans and proposals.

Lucy in Chicago, IL   September 8th, 2008 5:09 pm ET

I would like Sarah the Moosehead to actually have some foreign policy experience. I don't care what McCain's wife said about Russia being close to Alaska. Obama is right McCain doesn't get it. He thought he could pick a woman and win, but it wasn't about a women- it was about Hillary. Sarah Palin is NOT Hillary Clinton.

If the economy is still so horrible on election day the Republican's should run for the hills. Sarah Palin is Dick Cheney with a dress on.

Donna in ID   September 8th, 2008 5:09 pm ET

It seems that a lot of Obama ites aren't as brainwashed as he would like. They are starting to do some research and really asking questions. They are finding that McCain is NOT the OLD TIME Republican Party Clone. He is his own man and own thinker. He has already shown he can make changes in both the party and work with all sides of the isle in Congress and Senate.
I think that he and gov. Palin would be able to handle crazy woman Pelosi and her sidekick Reid. It would be nice to see them replaced and get someone who does NOT want to play politics with the American peoples expense. But I don't see that happening.

Be an independent thinker and ask questions and keep digging for answers. OBAMA IS SCARY.

Aaron   September 8th, 2008 5:09 pm ET

CNN,

Why don't you report on the lies and misleading information? So many people are confused on the facts, primarily because McCain/Palin are preaching outright lies.

It would help the viewers/voters if you published a report that compared our candidates positions and solutions. Ask the candidates to sign off on your report so there is no debate….we might even be able to hold them accountable after the election.

Thanks,

Aaron

To All Women who value their right to choose , who want equal pay, who want the right to decide for themselves what happens to their bodies, BEWARE PAlIN ! Her extreme views will put womans rights back 100 years !! This person does not represent you, she is not YOUR FRIEND ! To all men who value their right to speak out on womens issues , BEWARE PALIN ! She thinks she has the right to bulldoze anyone who opposes her !! This person is a right wing extremist, and we are just finding out now that she is a religious extremist as well !! PALIN represents everything that has held women back from taking their rightful place in the American landscape. Her extremist views , and agressive , insulting , overbearing manner, are NOT representative of the Womans movement in America today !

National Polls do not give you the true picture. State polls do. And by that measure, Obama still leads in electoral college votes. That is what really counts. He will soon hit the 270 mark when Palin and McCain are revealed for who they are: liers, like Bush-Cheney!

Les-Wa   September 8th, 2008 5:07 pm ET

McCain/Palin is good for the country. The bridge to nowhere with an earmark of $230 million doubled than the actual budget. for building the bridge, the state of Alaska can build it cheaper. The money was not returned to the federal government, why should they return it? Alaskans are paying a lot of taxes, its their tax money to begin with. The money is being use right now to build roads all over Alaska which is badly needed and benefits more people than few people in Hope where the over a quarter billion dollars bridge. If there's a bridge that should be built, it should be done at the Cook Inlet right in Nkishki for the city of Kenai. It would shorten travel from Kenai Peninsula to Anchorage to an hour instead of 3 and 1/2 hours, the area is heavily populated and connect to other cities like Soldotna, Homer, Ninilchik.

If there's one LIAR in this general election; it is OBAMA.

here are some of his lies:

1. He lied about NAFTA (wink to Canada he didn't mean just political maneuvering)

2. He lied about FISA ( he did not filibuster it as he promised, he VOTED FOR it.)

3. He lied to the people of Chicago in 2004, he told them he will not run for President because he need more experience. 143 days in the US senate, he start running for President.

BTW, the earmark of NObama is $932 millions. That is one million a day he serve in the US Senate.

Charles in Cincinnati   September 8th, 2008 5:07 pm ET

Why is the presidential race dead even after both parties have had their conventions?

BECAUSE THAT'S THE WAY THE MEDIA WANTS IT.

Seriously.

If it weren't a tight race, the media, including CNN, loses gobs of advertising revenue and viewers, both of which bring in a majority of their revenue. By helping to keep the race close, the major media outlets ensure that the once-every-four-years golden goose lives to lay another egg.

Why in the world else would McCain, who was down by 16 points in many polls back in June, now be tied with Obama when nothing about either platform fundamentally changed between early June and late August when the polls were suddenly about even?

If the media reported fairly and evenly — kinda what it's supposed to do — in this economy and with an unpopular war, history tells us that things would be looking very grim for the incumbent party. The fact that they're not suggests the media's vested interest in a close race is having some effect.

Random polls are going to yield something close to 50/50 every time these days. What really matters is voter turnout.

While uninspired Republicans cower in fear of terrorism, gays and half-Black presidents, Democrats are going to flock to the voting booths in droves, full of logic, inspiration, and TRUE Patriotism.

Ken,
Obama did not make a mistake by not selecting Hillary as his VP. Anyone who are voting for McCain because of that reason were going to vote against Obama anyway. The facts are, Hillayr and Obama voted exactly the same except for a very few things. Their differences are like day and night from that of McCain/Palin. Hillary is still supporting Obama because she knows that she was not selected because she was still running for president until about two weeks ago when she released her delegates.

The problem is, Obama & Hillary will be okay if McCain/Palin wins; what about you? Unless you are in the top 5% income bracket.

The American people will choose the best candidate this election which is Obama by far.

Careful now..   September 8th, 2008 5:04 pm ET

Obama: "Waaaah someone stole my campaign motto. People really believed it."

"Waaaah the media doesn't love me anymore."

"Waaaah I want the Clinton's help…. I wanna be President!!!"

PEOPLE. "Change" is not owned by Obama. Many politicians have used it over many years (Bill Clinton, anyone?). What proof does Obama have about change? Speeches and flip-flops on his "proposed" policies.

What proof does Palin? She has a proven record of shaking things up as governor…and it really works. As VP, Obama and his supports are shaking as they should be.

Dave g, Minneapolis   September 8th, 2008 5:04 pm ET

I agree with Anonymous! do your own research!!!!

Everybody has so much fun just bashing "the other" rather than really looking into the issues and thinking about the big picture.

Please understand that the Democrats and Republicans are just trying to preserve their power. They do this by supporting special interests. The special interests fund both parties…one will win and their own needs will be met. No one loses except us.

The bailouts are one example. We pay taxes on our property. Now our mortgages will be owned by the government, so we are paying interest TO THE GOVERNMENT (a tax?hmm…) then you will also have your taxes raised to bail out the mortgages that you as a taxpayer are paying interest on!!

Stop the madness. Vote for Liberty. Vote Libertarian.

When undecideds watch a speech about hope from a person with little history to back it up and a speech about "God, Family and Country" from a person who lived it… a clear choice unfolds.

Then you combine that with a young maverick woman like Palin and it's a winning ticket all around.

It's going to be an interesting 50 days as the Democrats find a way to win back the "change" promise.

The issues are: Children, Abortion, Civic Duty, Civility in the public square, the Problem of Conservatism, Consumer Issues, Corporations, Crime, Corporate Crime, the Distribution of Income, Drug Use, Drug Laws, the Economy, Education, Elections, Employment, Energy, the Environment, Family Values, Foreign Policy, Homelessness, Legal Immigration, Illegal Immigration, Decaying Infrastructure, Justice, Law, Marketing and Advertising, Medical Care, Methods of Government, Native Americans, the Population Problem, Poverty, Private Life, Public Life, the Religion Problem, Science and Technology, Secularism, Separation of Church and State, Taxation, Veterans of Combat, Voodoo Economics, Voters, Wages, War, the War on Terror, and Women's Issues.

The Republicans want the issue to be personality. If they discuss the issues I mentioned above, they will lose. If they are able to make the campaign be about personality, they will win.

Kee-ripes! The Obama supporters are at it again. Just because the race is now back to all-square (with two months remaining) they are suddenly wanting to know Gov. Palin's views on various things. What about Sen. Biden's views (if Gov. Palin's are so important)? I'll give you odds that just as Sen. Biden was put on the ticket to counter Sen.. Obama's being a rookie to the political process (much for the same reason that another long-time pol – Dick Cheney – was put on the GOP ticket eight years ago as the running-mate of a Texas governor that had never run for national office), his own views are different on a lot of national-security and foreign-policy issues from those of Sen. Obama. (Also, note that *nobody* quizzed either George Bush or Al Gore that much on either foreign policy or national security eight years ago, and they were the two Presidential candidates!) Also, unlike Sen. Obama, Sen. McCain actually knows his stuff on national-security and foreign-policy issues (even Sen. Biden admits that). What you want to quiz Gov. Palin about are in the areas where McCain is *weak* (by his own admission) tthe economy, tax policy, and the budget. Or are you actually worried that "Sarah Barracuda" is going to chew you up like so much chum (as in shark bait) over earmarks and pork-barrel spending?

As far as Gov. Palin keeping the money originally earmarked for the "Bridge to Nowhere" and using it for other projects, there's a long trend of exactly that when it comes to earmarks – the core of the Washington, DC area's Metro subway system was paid for with money from the Eisenhower Interstate Highway System Trust Fund, diverted, with the permission of Congress, from opposed and canceled planned highway projects through Washington, DC and its suburbs, including portions of Interstates 66 and 95. That's just a single example, folks. What exactly did the governor do differently than governors of other states? (In fact, didn't the governor of Florida – a Democrat – get permission to reprogram a similar earmark?) Ma Kettle, what color is Sister Pot?

Doug, New Jersey   September 8th, 2008 5:01 pm ET

I know that you all are better people and don't want to support the hateful, selfish, mean spirited liberalism that you will witness and understand if you drive around any of these areas for at least one day. Thank you.

BTW, you can get a head start on your fact finding mission by watching the video of the mini-van from Obama land on the home page of the CNN website. Peter (CA)   September 8th, 2008 5:00 pm ET

Obama got his bounce after the convention and went up by 6 to 10 pts. McCain got his bounce and caught up. He is in the spotlight more because of Palin.

However, as the campaign goes on, the Republicans will no longer be allowed to hide her, will no longer be able to claim that any questions are "sexist", will no longer be able to lie about her.

Wait a week or two and then see. The debates will be telling but be careful there. McCain is already saying he is no debater (just like his campaign said that if Obama did not get a 15 pt bounce from the convention, something was wrong). Let Palin tell America who she really is. I don't think anyone is ready for someone like that so close to the Presidency.

It is so very weird and scary at the same time that people are voting AGAINST their morals in this election. Some women I've spoken to who are pro-choice individuals are going to vote republican this year stictly for the purposes of voting for another woman and for not voting for a black candidate. Eventhough the woman is against their morals and the black man supports their morals. Vice versa as well. Some white older men are voting either independant or democratic to simply not for for a woman with 5 kids whom they feel should be home taking care of her "special needs" child. This SUCKS!

I'm so frustrated and disgusted by how people aren't looking at the issues here and voting totally against their beliefs for one reason or another. Our childrens future is at stake here and all people can think about our their own selfish reason to vote STUPID in this election. I'm a democrat a will be voting as such because I believe in the way I was raised and that the governement is formed for the people by the people. Not for individuals by the rich and powerful. We're debating on winning a pointless and unecessary war that shouldn't even be a topic. The current commander in chief should've been impeached for misleading the WORLD into a senseless fight, and his fellow Rebubs are requesting another 4 years to continue their way of life?? Hogwash!! People really seem to not get it and think that eventhough they voted for the current jerk they somehow are not at fault for our current situation and what makes it worse…They are trying to do it again and think something will result differently! These people amaze me but are the ones crying the most about the current situation. Old and DUMB!!

Is McCain still at the top of the ticket or is Palin? No one talks about McCain anymore… I guess that was his plan all along. They're trying to get away from that Bush-McCain legacy, and Palin can't be tied to Bush, so that's why they want HER in the spotlight, instead of McCain. After all, his campaign manager said this election would be about personalities, NOT about the issues. They're doing a great job with that angle, too…..

After turbo charging his ticket with Palin, and Obama picking the old white guy, we moderate Democrats who support Hillary are really looking forward to 2012.

You know what, George, you're so uninformed you're scary. And the reason it's so close is that's how the media makes it's money. It wouldn't be so interesting if it were leaning heavy one way or the other, meaning viewership would be down. Check on the net for the state by state polls.

Wendy   September 8th, 2008 4:58 pm ET

It is amazing how these polls are done or the questions that are asked. I just finish reading over 300 comments on McCain's ad about Palin saying no to pork belly spending and 85% of those comments stated the ad was a lie. So, how come there are more people on CNN writing comments that believed it was a lie but the polls say something different. It is that America really do not care about the problems that are taking place in America today. Well, one thing for sure if we don't care, China, India, and the Middle East does. They want America to pick a John McCain because they know the people of America will be ignored such as how we have been ignored for 8 years. Believe me the last 8 years was not a bad dream but a Reality Show.

Ken in Dallas   September 8th, 2008 4:57 pm ET

They're talking about Fannie and Freddie now? That's kind of dumb.

The trouble with Fannie and Freddie is very much a private-sector kind of problem: securities fraud.

Fannie and Freddie both made a practice of accepting any and all kinds of mortgage paper, including the subprime and worse trash, and securitizing it without due diligence, issuing junk bonds and slapping a bogus AAA credit rating on them. This is securities fraud, and should have been shut down by the SEC and other regulatory agencies, just like would have happened to any private company.

The point where size figures into the picture is after the crimes have been committed. Unlike normal companies, Fannie and Freddie will drive the economy into an outright depression if we allow them to simply collapse.

Size had nothing to do with how Freddie and Fannie got themselves into trouble, they did that by issuing fraudulent bonds. We have to back them now because they're such an important part of our economic structure (as they were designed to be) that thay can't collapse without taking the whole economy with them.

Fannie and Freddie are a mess because they've been mismanaged, and because Bush administration regulators turned a blind eye to open fraud.

The Democrats and Republicans (and anyone else) has the same deadline and the Dems and Republicans missed it. By TX state law, they cannot be included on the ballot!!

The deadline was before McCain even announced his VP choice, and BY LAW in TX the candidates must be listed on the application for the ballots by the deadline.

But what happened? TX Secy of State looked the other way and just is going to put them on the ballot. In fact, in other states, McCain's aides are trying to have Barr removed from ballots so that the process remains tidy–which I guess means that Americans have no choice and the two buddy parties keep their power.

After the election we need to demand the resignation of Howard Dean and a complete overhaul on how we conduct the primaries. We should always put the voters first. Every time I have call the DNC in regards to this they have been rude and dismissive.

The arrogance of Obama and our party is not to be believed. If Obama had done the smart thing, he would have picked Sen. Hillary Clinton for vice president. If he had, he would have united his party for sure and energized his base.

America's backbone is our democratic ideals, and if we are taking away the right of American Citizens to vote, we need to reconsider this whole idea of 'government of the people'.

It's still a long time until November. The debates are going to be what decides it, I think. Just my humble opinion. It depends on who can get through them without making a major gaffe. Tensions will be so high at that point (they already are) that the potential for a big mistake is huge.

does bill Burton support child abuse?

well he didn't tell anyone about it?

I believe that McCain's popularities is just because of Palin's popularity right now. Soon as that dies down and people see that it is the same McCain it will end. His policies changed just to get elected that is it he is still the same republican he has always been.

milo   September 8th, 2008 4:53 pm ET

"Washington outsider"? Come on, is this a news story or a McCain press release? The woman was the queen of earmarks, she traveled to washington on a regular basis to get them and even hired a lobbyist. A number of the ones she requested ended up on McCain's list of shameful earmarks.

What happened to honesty from the press? Well, here's one example disproving the old "liberal bias".

Karwolo   September 8th, 2008 4:52 pm ET

Lets face it, the Dems don't know how to win elections. Americans don't vote based on the economy, war, health care, cost of education, home foreclosures, etc. These issues are boring. Americans vote on flag pins, middle names, moose hunting, pastors, anything that create drama. The Repubs understand this and they based their campaign on the latter 'issues'. Obama and co need to forget about this hope and dreams and get dirty. Americans love a good fighter (we really don't care what you are fighting for or why). The Dems are weak: if they can't fight the republicans Americans don't trust them to fight our 'enemies'. Americans love an opportunity to shout USA. GET DIRTY OBAMA, GET DIRTY OR YOU WILL JUST BECOME AN ALSO RAN.

Palin Lies Continuously!   September 8th, 2008 4:52 pm ET

The fact that this woman stood in front of the nation and lied continuously and then talked down to community organizers as if they were nothing should really scare people. But the fact that mccain picked her is even more frightening. What was he thinking? Or did he? She is at best trailer park xxxxxx. She is ultra conservative, a huge spender, left Alaska in millions of dollars in debt and advocates teen pregnancy like its no big deal. Obama/Biden, the wise, enlightened choice!

Jill   September 8th, 2008 4:51 pm ET

I am a Democrat and I love Hillary and wish she were on the ticket. With that being said I would not vote for McCain/Palin as a disgruntled Dem. Sarah and Hillary share a Y chromosome and that's it. They don't believe in almost any of the same things so this is actually an insult to woman if they Repub party thinks she will get a woman's vote merely because she is a woman. Are you kidding me? That's such an insult to women.
Sarah believes in the constiutional amendment to ban gay marriage. She is against abortion rights. She has no foreign policy experience. She is not the woman for the job and cannot compare to nor should she be compaired to Hillary. We cant afford 4 more years of same old same old. People are going to loose thier homes and cant heat the ones they can keep, cant drive to work because gas costs too much and there are no plans to deal with education or the economy that make any real sense being spoken about.

Please ladies if you are reading this…don't disappoint me or prove me wrong. As much as I would love to see a female in the White House, she is not the one and I guess its not our time. "No way ,no how, no McCain, No Palin"!!!

people says obama plays the race card. So is Mccain /palin playing the gender card? I'm from Dayton,Ohio and the First thing I Thought When Mccain picked Palin is he's doing this because she a woman. Nobody can talk bad about her or question her or your a sexist.every public move she makes he's right there behind her checking her out. Their going keep her away until they are finished programing her. so it doesn't matter about her personal views. the mccain campaign is going use her as they see fit. in my opinion that's sexist

Did you know that the Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac bailout is huge… like Bear Stearns was? Who's bailing them out? You and me…our taxes at work.
Obama and McCain both support this. It WILL raise taxes, but more importantly, it sends the message that speculators who took risks–and lost–will be bailed out by you and me. That's what you're supporting if you vote for these two parties. You can whine and complain about oil and their profits…but they are taxPAYERS. Bear Stearns, Freddie and Fannie are now taxCONSUMERS. and both parties support this!!!

Vote against support for these bailouts. Vote Libertarian Bob Barr.!!!

Come on people do your own poll once and tell me what you find. Obama is way ahead. Only people who lie for a stroy more then politicians is the media. Obama is smarter then Rove, he is letting Rove have his moment and spend the majority of their money, he knows the intelligent are voting for him no matter what and hence will target the stupid later in the campaign with flashy balls that will get their attention. These dumb people will go wherever lead at anytime, Obama is saving up to lead these sheep the right direction later. They obviously have short memories as they do not seem to remember the last 8 years, so advertising to them this early is pointless. Obama will give them a treat like calling over an animal when it is time. McCain/Rove are using up all their treats, and the stupid animals won't care, they will go for the next treat offered.

True Conservative   September 8th, 2008 4:48 pm ET

I am sorry but as a female and a conservative I have to question Palin's values. She left her home and her children right when they needed her most to pursue fame in the public sphere. It is very telling that her daughter became pregnant after she abandoned her to serve as mayor and then governor. She should have been home serving as a mother to her children. Now she wants to leave her family to serve as Vice President when she has 5 children one of which has DS and another that is pregnant! What kind of mom would do this? She should stay home to help her family in its time of need.

Since moms have abandoned the home the nation has fallen a part. Palin's example with do nothing but encourage more women to do the same.

Why are so many conservatives cheering for Palin when her actions run contrary to our espoused values?

Terry from GA   September 8th, 2008 4:48 pm ET

I don't look at polls. I look at the number of newly registered democrats in each state. Elections are won by the number of voters that come out on election day, not by poll numbers.

Mike in Calgary   September 8th, 2008 4:46 pm ET

Great convention – just trying to decide who is the best liar – Palin, McCain, Giuliani or Graham. Factcheck is real eyeopener. Palin fits right in with them.

Best thing was seeing McCain follow Obama's lead re Iraq and Afghanistan. Showsa you who the real leader is?

Now they are following Obama's campaign theme of Change – even McCain seems to be following the real leader now.

ST   September 8th, 2008 4:46 pm ET

I just hope people can see beyond the pretty package. I for one am not fulled. These women who claim to be feminists and want a woman in office at all cost do not know what they are doing. I am a feminist and believe Palin is setting us back 100 years. We need to take her down now. She is the only reason McCain is ahead at all. Obama-Biden need to go at her with both guns blazing.

Irma in North Carolina   September 8th, 2008 4:46 pm ET

When the republicans get over this fasisnation of Sarah and realizes that these two will get us for more years of bush, the polls should turn back to obamas favor, and wait till she has to get out on her own and speak, insteading of holding on to grandpas coat tail. But I imagine the Mccain camp will give her a set of notes as to what to say each time. She sure isnt intelligent enough on her own to know what to say. I suppose it is a task of Gods also to send her son to Iraq. Maybe it should be a task of Gods to see fit that he takes both of these canidates out of the Election.

Gia in Los Angeles, CA   September 8th, 2008 4:46 pm ET

First off, most people still don't know how radical right Palin's views are. The far right will still be enamored by her, but the middle right, Independents, and Democrats will all lose interest or be dead set against her, once they all find out.

Secondly, advance polls — even the night before an election — can be extraordinarly inaccurate. Exit polls, however, prove to be much more accurate. We won't know how people will REALLY vote, until they actually vote.

Finally, LOOK AT THE ELECTORAL MAP John King analyzes! Obama currently has 243 electoral votes to McCain's 189, with the rest toss-up. THAT'S what will count in the end — electoral votes!

"Why of course the people don't want war. Why should some poor slob on a farm want to risk his life in a war when the best he can get out of it is to come back to his farm in one piece? Naturally the common people don't want war: neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country."

- Hermann Goehring

——————————————————————————–

"Beware the leader who bangs the drums of war in order to whip the citizenry into a patriotic fervor, for patriotism is indeed a double-edged sword. It both emboldens the blood, just as it narrows the mind. And when the drums of war have reached a fever pitch and the blood boils with hate and the mind has closed, the leader will have no need in seizing the rights of the citizenry. Rather, the citizenry, infused with fear and blinded by patriotism, will offer up all of their rights unto the leader and gladly so. How do I know? For this is what I have done. And I am Caesar."

- Julius Caesar

As I have been sayin, Obama made his biggest mistake by choosing Biden for his VP instead of Hillary Clinton, where it would have given him a "slam dunk" into the White House. Now it is gong to be his down fall, for he WILL NOT be able to beat McCain/Palin in November!

I am a Hillary Clinton supporter that is voting for McCain/Palin because they at least have the skills, knowledge and experience to run this country. Obama DOES NOT have any experience or skills to run this country and if by some strange chance that he is elected, the US is going to be in big trouble.

I used to be for McCain, but Sarah Palin lied time and again in her convention speech, and John McCain has been lying over and over in his speeches. So, of course, they are going to lie in their advertising. Now, I'm stuck between voting for liars or voting for someone I'm just not sure about.

My verdict:

Sarah Palin: LIAR

John McCain: LIAR

Barak Obama: Judgement reserved

Joe Biden: TRUTHFUL (to a fault)

Robert Louisville, KY   September 8th, 2008 4:43 pm ET

I have said and I still say McCain is using Gov Palin to get elected, that's why he will not let her campain alone. He knows he was loosing this election, so the only way to get his message of change over he had to do something out of the ordinary. What better to do than introduce a woman as his running mate something that republicans just don't do. Seeing that Obama did not choose Clinton lets capitalize on that and choose a woman and get those disgruntled
voters. If people realize that McCain has changed his whole political campain to a change campain just like Obama, Palin will be no longer popular. They will realize that if they vote for that ticket they will still be putting McCain in the White House not Palin. Palin can only do what McCain says and that will not be much once he is elected, he will no longer need her and I bleave she will have no voice.

I am truly frightened of Palin, who knows nothing about the lower forty-eight, never mind foreign affairs, and who lives in a state that has more in common with the oil-rich emirates than with the rest of us. It's the economy, stupid, all over again, but Obama doesn't seem to get the message. McCain and Palin are so tied to the oil industry that they will make the Bushes look egalitarian and what's left of the economy will bankrupt us before it has a chance to destroy our children's future. But if the Obama campaign doesn't develop some backbone and say so, i don't see how they can possibly win.

Mike in Calgary   September 8th, 2008 4:41 pm ET

Palin is not an attack dog as she purports, but rather a lap dog for McCain, who received Bush's stamp of approval.

After looking at fact check, she would appear not to be a pit bull with lipstick, but a more accurately a lying female dog (I forget the word for female dog). No wonder she's good enough for McCain and Bush.

Good start by Obama in his speech, but waiting to be finished.

Ed Carlson - New Jersey   September 8th, 2008 4:40 pm ET

It's hard to view John McCain as the candidate for change when he always takes both sides of the debate. He claims that he's for reform is Washington, but hires one of Washington's biggest lobbyist to run his presidential campaign. McCain claims he's against eye-marks and wasteful spending but picks a Vice Presidential candidate that supported the "bridge to nowhere", then opposed but kept the $223 million dollars anyway. McCain claims that he will help the American people who are struggling with high energy prices. What does he do?
He picks a running mate that raises taxes on the oil produces in Alaska so that she can give every person in her state $1800 while people like me across the country pay higher prices at the pump to make up the revenue shortfall.

henriettap   September 8th, 2008 4:39 pm ET

once all the people who have maxed out their credit cards and are behind in their payments realize that you can't spend your way out of debt, maybe they will realize that sen. obama's elaborate plans of spend, spend, spend is just not going to fly. already the oil prices are coming down, so the chances of windfall profits to tax are going to be eliminated. Afghanistan and Russia's rumblings will take care of the savings from Iraq. taxing the companies that create jobs will end up with a net loss on job creation. sen. Obama just does not seem to understand economics. his philosophy is to rob peter to pay Paul which is what the public is doing now and it's not working. so my prediction is that soon the people will see McCain's restraint program is the way to go and the polls will reflect it

Susan, CA   September 8th, 2008 4:38 pm ET

Why do you McCain people think he is stronger on Iraq? Obama didn't even vote to go there in the first place. Not only that, but his STUPID SURGE DIDN'T WORK. It was other issues having to do with circumstances between the different religious factions that decreased the violence in Iraq–NOT THE SURGE. Please people do some research and don't just blindly listen to these people and sentence us to another four years of this hell.

I think without no press at all since the press got scared to do their job I think the poll are pretty good. I also think since churches are so influential in our policies they should pay income tax and use the money for community organizers. Is not news the all this envangelical are trying to find out when life begins but support when it ends. This is history we are soon going to be in a modern crusade in this country. Our forefathers must be ashame to see all they work for separation of church and state. Wolf has been reporting 34 Minutes of sara palin and hes been on 24 LOL! A-Man   September 8th, 2008 4:35 pm ET

These poll's are a joke, why does CNN not display the online poll it conducted, didn't like the strong Obama result? Look at the comment sections of the people in all the CNN stories. They are 90 plus percent in favor of Obama. The media is owned by rich republicans and 1st need popular news, which comes from bragging up Palin even though most think she stinks, and pretending the election race is close. Why does CNN not answer why their comment sections are overwhelmingly Obama. People have showed they can be conned easily, Rove proves it over and over. But make no mistake Obama is handedly winning this race and will win it. CNN's numerous primetime talk hosts pushing the republicans endlessly is shameful for a news station. They promise equal time for both parties. When they talk republican they have positive republicans on to comment, when they give democratic time they have negative republicans on to comment. They may speak equally about both, but it is all positive for Republicans and all negative for Democrates. And if you think this will not hurt your viewers then you are wrong CNN. As a regular daily watcher I have already started to watch other news channels and will continue to look to them in the future. If this is your standard then your news is biased. I hope someone starts a movement for all democrates to ban CNN for its biased reporting.

I am more confused than ever now..and wish McCain camp would take the chains off Palin, make hER face the music on news shows too..Biden has and continues to..Why, oh WHY is Palin being so "schooled" by McCain camp if she is 'already" expierienced ?? and if she is such a 'ptbull", then she shouldnt have any problem facing up to Oreilly either..oh, I forgot , from Oreillys answers, he for McCain..hmmmmm

WAKE UP AMERICANS AND I PRAY THAT ALL REPUBLICANS WHO CLAIM TO BE BELIEVERS SNAP OUT OF THEIR SLEEP. This woman needs to be focusing on her family, ill newborn child, pregnancy daughter and possibly grandparenting – aiding her 16 yr. old daughter. Her needs her attention more than American. It clearly seems that she and her husband enjoy their marriage roles that they have agreed to switch for the sake of personal gain. Since she claims to be deeply of the Christian faith and strongly believes in God, The Lord's will is for a mother to be a mother and father to be a father – not a father to play the rold of "momma" and practice being "mom" while the real mom stays away from the family to work and earn a living lying to millions of people to get someone else nominated as Pres. of USA. She is not ready to be Pres or VP – but she declares she is ready. Well, she would be swearing to put her country first not her ill child nor her family. She looks in a fake three dollar bill. I feel sorry for husbands in American who votes for her – your wives will be next line for their independence and you raising and caring for babies as a "stay-home father-momma". Sad. Sad. Sad. AMERICAN shame on all voters for McCain/Palin. Your message is dishonest.; and choosing Palin because she is a woman is totally beyond logical reasoning. McCain cares less about her family, He wants to win, win.

The Obama team is in PANIC mode.   September 8th, 2008 4:32 pm ET

Has everyone noticed how the Obama Campaign doesn't have anything positive to discuss anymore. What happened to the new "changed" way of running a campaign. The Obama team is doing exactly what they renounced as "old style" politics. They 1st blamed Hillary and then the Republicans for running campaigns based on fear and the throw the kitchen sink mentality. Now that Obama is no longer ahead in the polls, he turned out to be no better than Hillary or McCain.

Does not the USA gallop poll shows McCain up by three? Why is CNN not talking about the latest gallop poll? Wasn't Obama up by 9 points just a month ago? This ticket should read, Obama's support had the biggest fall in poll numbers.

It's nothing but platitudes and how people won't have to worry about any consequences for their actions. Climate change isn't real, we need to burn more coal, drill for more oil, and while we're at it, let's ridicule conservation.

The rapture is a comin' and Alaska is going to be a refuge state. I just saw the CNN rebroadcast of the YouTube video showing Palin praying for the end days. People need to think about what kind of consequences there are with politicians think their actions are guided by God.

DisenfranchisedHills for McCain   September 8th, 2008 4:30 pm ET

McCain will probably get a bigger bounce out of the conventions, because the end of the Republican Convention began the migration of disenfranchised voters from the Dem side to the Republican side. This will be ongoing for the next couple of weeks and may not show in polls for two and half to three weeks. But many of the dis-satisfied Hillary supporters are uniting to support McCain and ,thus ,attempt to defeat the corrupt DNC for silencing so many millions of voters. Democratic Rules don't count for much among voters ,come November.

The Idea of Mcsame winning and continuing Bush's failed polices for another 8 years is hard to accept. The past 8 years of Republican mismanagement have been a total disaster for the country. Americans don't seem to ever learn their lessons! This past 8 years have been a total republican train wreck and now americans are ready to keep this McBush nightmare going. Almost all the New Yorkers I talk to are ready to leave the Usa if McCain wins, I myself cannot accept another 4 years of Bush. What a mess!

However, if Bush were the president …we all know he doesn't read anything but the funny papers. Well oddly, Pahlin wanted to fire the librarian for books that she didn't approve them being on the shelf. I trust it was soley the content and not the fact it was above her reading comprehension level. And that's not sexist just a concern given the job requirements of VP

If the media will do their jobs and vet Palin properly on all her views, the honeymoon will end soon enough. People are not at this point examining Palin's record or her views and speeches for themselves but rather listening and believing what appears to be a credible ticket at first glance. If the media spends just half as much time vetting Palin over the next month at least as they have on Obama's every thought over the last 19 months, the polls will show a different result. How about it, media?

I refuse to believe that Americans are dumb enough to pick someone to be a leader in our country because "she's a breath of fresh air", ran for a beauty contest, and makes snappy one liners written by someone else. If that's how we're picking VP candidates then we should just start attending beauty contests instead of voting on issues and the person's ability to lead!!!

Wait until Palin starts giving interviews. She will show why she has a 80 percent approval rating in AK.

The bounce has helped McCain because the polls are better for McCain than before the conventions.

When Palin starts to give interviews and starts to talk OFF a teleprompter she will show she can talk and think on her feet.

Obama can't even do that (talk well without written speech or large crowd)

I AM STILL WAITING FOR ALL THOSE DEBATES OBAMA SAID HE WOULD DO (all talk)

Trust me McCain is not stupid to pick a VP that would not be able to take advantage of the lack of ONE on ONE debates that Obama and Biden (foot in mouth too many times to count) are sorely lacking.

Keep talking about how dumb or how she is a urban hick etc…

When she does start giving interviews in a few days she will only make those who slammed her seem like so many talking heads.

Polls will only go up again.

I am one of the displaced Hillary followers. I am disappointed in McCain for picking a "token" woman for his running mate. I know he had others in mind for the role but thought he could get my Hillary vote by naming a woman. Well it is not that easy to get my vote! I am looking forward to the debates so I can hear how all four stand up to questioning.
Enough of the heroism, we are making heros everyday the War in Iraq continues. I was against Vietnam and I am against Iraq. A good President is not just one that can stand up against terrorism, a good President is one that can communicate PEACE and promote humane leadership to the world. A good President is one that can rid politics of Corporate intervention. A good President will promote other means of energy, not just place more ugly drilling sites off shore. Did you ever see the coastline at Santa Barbara CA??? A good President will promote GREEN so our children will have an earth for their children.

How could the Republican's get a bounce from thier convention. All it entailed was a bunch of white conservatives (funny one of them has a 17 yr old unmarred daughter) saying how wonderful, right and patriotic they were!!!! No they want us to believe they are mavericks and will bring change. Will this change mean more and bigger wars. Will this change mean we will side with the religious right and start punishing anyone who does not believe in thier religious views.

Schneider (I) - CA   September 8th, 2008 4:23 pm ET

Average Americans don't believe that the Earth was created 7000 years ago; We don't ignore overwhelming scientific proof about global warming; We don't support Jews For Jesus; We don't support states seceding from the country; We don't support eminent domain; We don't support banning books; We don't support using political power for personal gain (Troopergate); We do support abortion in the case of rape or incest; We do support sexual education that deals with pre-marital sex, STDs and contraceptives
Palin should not be allowed anywhere near the White House!
She is an extreme religious fundalmentalist.
She lied about a major corruption foe (she accepted campaign contributions in the same fundraising scheme at the center of a public corruption scandal that led to the indictment of Sen.

Susan, Nebraska   September 8th, 2008 4:23 pm ET

Obama should have chosen Hillary for a running mate. At this point, if Hillary campaigns against Governor Palin, then she is once again being used by a man. She stood by Bill all those years to get her chance at the presidency and that didn't work out. Now Obama wants to use her to help get elected. If I were Hillary, I would use Sarah Palin's line, "thanks but no thanks".

Umm…Obama was way ahead before the conventions started and now they are even after the conventions.

Looks like McCain picked up voters.

I mean, if you know 1st grade math it is obvious.

Schneider (I) - CA   September 8th, 2008 4:23 pm ET

McCain = Bush

Open your eyes America !!

You were stupid enough to elect Bush twice…don't reward the GOP for their mismanagement and disasterous policy decisions.

Bush = McCain

S.B. Stein E.B. NJ   September 8th, 2008 4:23 pm ET

Now that the conventions are over and the players are set, let us listen to the debates and look at the polices of Obama and McCain since they are at the top of the ticket.

As for the polls, if these are national polls, then they should be discounted since each state has its own amount of electoral college votes. Remember that people since this is not a direct election. Senators weren't always direct elections either.

Patrick Henry, Fort Myers   September 8th, 2008 4:22 pm ET

Of course it's a bounce!! Just like the rocks the McCain and Obama supporters are bouncing off of each others heads.

How can we end the partisanship and bickering through our elected officials when we (the people) can't consider any viewpoints but our own party?

Poetic justice–we deserve what we end up with.

Who is Sara Palin –

Before you swing/undecided cast your vote, here is something you better consider –

She was elected Alaska's governor a little over a year and a half ago. Her previous office was mayor of Wasilla, a small town outside Anchorage. She has ABSOLUTELY no foreign policy experience.

Palin is strongly anti-choice, opposing abortion even in the case of rape or incest.

She supported right-wing extremist Pat Buchanan for president in 2000.

Palin thinks creationism should be taught in public schools.

She's doesn't think humans are the cause of climate change.

She's solidly in line with John McCain's "Big Oil first" energy policy. She's pushed hard for more oil drilling and says renewables won't be ready for years. She also sued the Bush administration for listing polar bears as an endangered species—she was worried it would interfere with more oil drilling in Alaska.

How closely did John McCain vet this choice? He met Sarah Palin once at a meeting. They spoke a second time, when he called her about being vice-president. Then he offered her the position.

……and she's still under investigation for abusing her position as governor to get her ex-brother in law fired from his job b/c of a nasty divorce he was involved in with her sister.

With the economic and national security stakes this high….you would think a decision this important would have warranted a little more thought.

Do we really need a candidate who allows her personal views to interfere with her job?????

Obama/Biden 08

Foreign observer   September 8th, 2008 4:22 pm ET

Maybe even the Bush market intervention on Fanny Mae and Freddy Mac which can be regarded as socialist intervention is part of a change on positions ? No – don´t think so but Republicans agree now that there is a real need for change.
So there is either a "change light" or a "change we can believe in". Guess the choice is easy.

Jeff   September 8th, 2008 4:22 pm ET

Obama is a joke and has always been a joke. He has accomplished nothing. Rudi's speech was harsh, I flet bad for Obama but it is all true and the American people know it. Even the Obama supporters know it, though they don't want to admit it. Obama does not deserve presidency yet, he likely will someday and that will be a great day, but not now. Everyone knows he would have supported the war had he been in the Senate at the time, cmon. He was totally wrong on the surge.

McCain/Palin '08
Hillary '12 and '16.

That's right. McCain to take the lead and never look back. Oh well. It certainly was fun watching the liberals get their hopes built up … just to get their hearts broken all over again.

Go McCain / Palin

Rudy NYC   September 8th, 2008 4:22 pm ET

Okay, the Republicans feel that it is not about the issues but about the personalities. They gave Democrats a hard time for having a rock star candidate, now they can be happy with one of their own.

What are Sarah Palin's stances on key issues?

She does not believe in global warming.
She believes the Earth is 5000 years old.
Her pastor tells her she is on a mission from God.
She has pushed a bill to remove animals from endangered species lists.

The list goes on and on to the extreme right. She ignited the base. The same base that still loves Bush. Put one and one together and add them up.

I get 3rd Bush Term Extreme Edition.

FearLessInFlorida   September 8th, 2008 4:21 pm ET

What If Bristol Palqin Were Black?
Christian-right leaders and conservative stalwarts have praised the decision of Bristol Palin, the daughter of Governor Sarah Palin, to carry her child to term. She is 17 and conceived this child out of wedlock. Now imagine she wasn't the daughter of a prominent Republican politician but an average person. Now imagine she was black. What do you think conservatives would have to say about her? 'Typical, urban youth with no sense of responsibility raised with loose morals who plans to depend on the state to take care of her child.' You know it. It's not within dispute. That's exactly what they would say.

Barack Obama has told everyone to lay off this because it is a personal, family matter. Yes, but it also has public policy ramifications. Governor Palin is for abstinence only education. Well, that obviously didn't work. Has she learned her lesson? Will she now amend her policy position on this matter given her personal record of failure in implementing this ridiculous stance?

Sarah Bell   September 8th, 2008 4:21 pm ET

Sarah Palin is DICK CHENEY WITH LIPSTICK!! You got to give it to Karl Rove though, he sure knows how to pick a VP for his party. The FEARFUL RIGHT ate it up. America dooped again. The unqualified but hot weather girl. One time, two times, three times fools. Who said they couldn’t do it again? Who said America was smarter this time around? Who said Bush couldn’t win a 3rd term if he ran again?? The FEAR FACTOR always dominates. It’s just amazing that a party who works for 3% of the people manages to fool an entire 51% into believing they work for them too. Amazing. I had an epiphany yesterday watching the TV show Hole in the Wall. We are screwed. We are an Idiocracy.

MISSISSIPPI FOR OBAMA   September 8th, 2008 4:20 pm ET

I am a 27 year old female. I do not understand how Americans can vote republican again after the last disastrous 4 years. FIRST OF ALL PALIN DOES NOT NEED TO BE COMPARED TO HILLIARY. That's because he's a warmonger and has the Americans fooled that since he was in the mimitary he has all the experience.

That doesn't erase the fact that he voted a lot with Bush and is still forcing Bush's policies on us.

Schneider (I) - CA   September 8th, 2008 4:20 pm ET

The only reason McCain is up right now is because they stole all the press immediately after the DNC. With all the GOP faithful jamming the media with praise for the zealot, it has been all GOP for over a week. Seriously, have you even seen a picture of Biden since the convention? The press, including CNN, obviously wants to have a McCain/Palin presidency.

Ken in Dallas   September 8th, 2008 4:20 pm ET

McCain's energy policy is all about fossil fuels, food for fuel, and nukes. He doesn't seem to have a clue why the US banned breeder reactors and transmutation processes, and endorses $2 billion a year for unproven "clean coal" and nothing for well-established wind and solar energy sources.

McCain's "Lexington Project" page puffs up biofuels with repetitious paragraphs that say the same thing.

On wind, hydroelectric, and solar power: "John McCain believes in an even-handed system of tax credits…," whatever (if anything) that means.

Iraq wants us out of their country, yet McCain plans on staying there forever, or until they force us out, whichever is bloodier. He touts military escalation as if it were the only possible means of success in Iraq, when it in fact was not the only means of success; paying off the Sunnis that used to work for al Qaeda had more to do with success than the escalation itself.

Are Republicans all expecting to win the lottery? Just because you want to believe in this fraud doesn't make him real.

Brian Rich   September 8th, 2008 4:20 pm ET

If the convention bounces have canceled each other out as of today, that's good news. Because the GOP convention was just a few days ago, while the Dem convention was a week and a half ago. If they are doing as well as the GOP with a week's difference since their conventions ended, that means in another week the Dems should be back to leading the GOP by 5-6 points on average. GOP destruction coming in November…wait for it.

HIllarySupporter   September 8th, 2008 4:19 pm ET

Once the truth of Palin claims comes out the GOP polls will go down, obama will beat Mccain 55 to 45% and win the presidency with a landslide victory.

Todd   September 8th, 2008 4:18 pm ET

Wow! The convention strengthened each party's feelings about their own candidate???? OH MY GOD!! How did we ever get by before the amazing detailed journalism that CNN provides in stories like this???

Face the facts…None of the candidates have said anything about anything at this point. Although, I do find the sheer number of LIberals who have time in the middle of their work (I guess not) days to post comments over and over!!

Michele   September 8th, 2008 4:17 pm ET

We're gonna wipe the floor with Palin. She's is a pathological liar and she believes that the Iraq War is part of God's plan. God being George Bush apparently. Just keep telling the truth about this chick CNN.

Rudy NYC   September 8th, 2008 4:17 pm ET

Hey, I got polled just yesterday by Gallup, on a cell phone no less. They claim to dial the numbers totally at random.

Ron L   September 8th, 2008 4:17 pm ET

Once again this is NOT a surprise!! The addition of Gov. Palin to the Republican ticket has given the base a new burst of enthusiasm.
BUT THIS AS ALL THINGS WILL PAST…
WHY?? Because I believe she is too far CONSERVATIVE for a large portion of the electorate AND we are going to find out much of what she brags about accomplishing are EXAGGERATIONS!! This will damper the enthusiasm and people will remember she is relatively untested and not all they are trying to make her to be.

Quinn - Houston, Texas   September 8th, 2008 4:17 pm ET

Sarah Palin gives a speech loaded with more INSULTS than IDEAS and gets rave reviews.

So many parts of the speech were bold-face lies, and yet the McCain campaign can use "sexism" to make the media afraid to point them out.

John McCain is playing everyone!

…Especially women voters and the media!

Peter   September 8th, 2008 4:16 pm ET

Obama will still win

Janis Jaquith   September 8th, 2008 4:16 pm ET

George W. Bush is the original maverick. He wrestled the Republican party away from real Republicans and lied us into a war against the wrong country.

Sure, McCain's a maverick, and he's cut from the same cloth as George W. Bush. You want more of THAT?

Griff   September 8th, 2008 4:15 pm ET

It's a matter of whether you all live in: "Little Town's", which make a Country. Or whether you still need to stay a "Super-Power"? Your Country is Divided. A Democratic USSA…"Due to collapse", like the USSR…

fella from Chicago   September 8th, 2008 4:15 pm ET

Three debates and world affairs. That's what its come down too. Palin is the wild card. If she survives "Troopergate" and holds her own against Biden in their debate, McCain will be the next President. Palin will take the Republican reigns in 2012 due to McCain's age and run against in all probability Hillary Clinton. And that will bring your first female President to the White House..

Oh, the media...you're like a feeding tube, but love it!!   September 8th, 2008 4:15 pm ET

But, it's about the issues, plain and simple…

If you believe that trillions of dollars in debt is ok,
oil will last forever,
Iraq and the rest of our relationship with the Middle East is fine,
and thousands of our troops dying,
global warming is a hoax,
and people don't have the intelligence to make their own marriage and conception decisions
then vote for McCain.

I want to go forward….Obama/Biden

Rick   September 8th, 2008 4:14 pm ET

People make no sense   September 8th, 2008 4:14 pm ET

DUH!

Saturday in Colorado Springs, Colo., Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin said, "The fact is that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac have gotten too big and too expensive to the taxpayers. The McCain-Palin administration will make them smaller and smarter and more effective for homeowners who need help."

"Too expensive to the taxpayers?"

They're private entities.

Sen. Barack Obama   September 8th, 2008 4:13 pm ET

John McCain / Sarah Palin = teaching our children the honorable way to serve the greater good of this fine nation.

LIE YOUR WAY TO THE WHITE HOUSE.

Now those are values all christian can respect and admire.

As a military wife, I could never voter for McCain! McCain chooses Palin….Palin! Are you kidding me! If you think for one second I can put faith in an elderly man potentially putting my husband's life in the hands of a "hockey Mom"…..NO WAY!

John in Ohio   September 8th, 2008 4:13 pm ET

Actually, the Republican convention bounce hasn't finished wearing off. Look at the polls around 10/4, that will give you a good idea how the election will go.

Dave L   September 8th, 2008 4:13 pm ET

Wake up, McCain has surged ahead in the polls. McCain – Palin rock! Obama is done. It is over.

Obama-Junkie, IL   September 8th, 2008 4:13 pm ET

Polls! Schmools!

I can't believe polling firms are polling people based on enthusiasm? What about the issues? Are the people polled enthusiastic about the state of the economy?!?! Are people polled enthusiastic about the War in Iraq or War for Aghanistan?

The real story behind this polling relative to the candidates is by what margin do people believe Obama/Biden is better on the economy vs McCain/Palin better on national security.

James   September 8th, 2008 4:13 pm ET

There's been a trend with Obama and the race card. Obama tends to pull out the race card when he is in decline in the polls. I suggest everyone keeps a good eye out for the race card. Barrack''s got his fingers on the deck and selecting the card to pull as we speak.

RDS   September 8th, 2008 4:12 pm ET

thank you for explaining this to all the McCain people who are happy about their convention bounce. National polls really don't matter look at the electoral map. Obama is already at like 243 while McCain is still at 189. You only need 270 to win and that's actually leaving off some of the battleground states that are heavily leaning Obama. So enjoy the bounce while you can ;-)

John McCain   September 8th, 2008 4:11 pm ET

Did I mention I was a POW?

S.A.M. from Virginia   September 8th, 2008 4:11 pm ET

We'll get all the bounce we need after the debates. Maybe even sooner if Hillary rips this wanna be politicain a new one. 600,000 people in Alaska. There's twice as many of people in Brooklyn. Let's see if she can be a mayor of a real city before you knucklehead repubs try and send her to the White House.

OBAMA/BIDEN 08

Christian Vreeland, Traverse City Mi   September 8th, 2008 4:11 pm ET

Nothing that really needs saying hear, maybe 10,000 people on a random call list poll…. and those numbers represent all of America two months before the election? not really feeling it.

In any event….

Obama 08

PUMA PALIN   September 8th, 2008 4:11 pm ET

McCain/Palin now lead in every poll… first time this election…

I'd say their bounce was a bit better than Obama's who lead by 7 going in… twist it any way you want CNN… it's all bad news for Obama..

Guess Hillary looks pretty good now!

Thank you DNC…

Frank (Ohio)   September 8th, 2008 4:11 pm ET

I feel the race dynamics havnt changed for months. The reason. Everyone has already made up their minds. When the News reports 10% undecided or So many votes dont know Obama or something, I dont believe it. I think nearly everyone has made up their mind and did so long ago.

Rodger   September 8th, 2008 4:10 pm ET

Once the American people learn more about Palin and the lies that McCain and Palin continue to tell are exposed, the poles will make their swing to a landslide for Obama/Biden.

alvino   September 8th, 2008 4:10 pm ET

$10 Billion a week on an unnecessary war, and John McCain is favored on this issue?

george   September 8th, 2008 4:09 pm ET

cnn please comment that mccain had 34 million viewers for his convention, while nobama only had 30 million.
obama's paris hilton effect is finally getting tired.
despite the 80,000 people at his coronation all throwing out the flags they were waving once the tv cameras turned off, and despite the styrofoam greek columns, and despite the media fawning over him, he still had fewer viewers.

also, wasn't mccain behind before the conventions? now he's ahead by 6 points according to the latest gallup poll.

Vic, Ohio   September 8th, 2008 4:09 pm ET

Considering Obama has barely gotten a headline in the last week he's not doing so bad.

Just say NO…to McSame.
