CNN Poll of polls: McCain continues to move ahead

A New CNN Poll of polls show McCain ahead.

A New CNN Poll of polls show McCain ahead.

(CNN) - John McCain’s edge is growing in the latest CNN Poll of polls - the first comprised of surveys conducted entirely after the Republican convention.

After averaging in new survey results from CBS, ABC/Washington Post, and Gallup, CNN’s national Poll of polls now shows McCain leading Obama by 2 points, 47 to 45 percent. The CNN Poll of polls released earlier Monday showed McCain ahead of Obama by 1 point, 47 to 46 percent. Eight percent are undecided.

“John McCain is riding high after an extremely successful Republican Convention,” said CNN Senior Political Researcher Alan Silverleib. “For the first time all year, McCain is ahead of Obama in the Poll of Polls. The GOP base is energized. The so-called ‘convention bounce’ is alive and well, and has resulted in an overall swing of seven percentage points in McCain’s favor since the Republicans met in St. Paul on September 1. This historic race for the White House will now likely remain tight all the way to Election Day.”

The national general election "Poll of Polls" consists of five surveys: CNN (September 5-7), ABC/Washington Post (September 5-7), CBS (September 5-7), Gallup (September 5-7), and Diageo/Hotline (September 5-7). The Poll of Polls does not have a sampling error.

Senator Obama is too much of a gentleman to call McCain and Palin what they have proven to be: Liars! Liars! Liars! Enough is enough!

America, wake up before it is too late!

Wow – how did this happen?

Obama and McCain were both driving tanks in a Washington military parade when the two tanks bumped into each other.

Obama jumped out and yelled 'I surrender!'.

    McCain said 'I accept'.

And the universe is at ease once more.

With McCain, we all WILL experience the MOST dramatic change: name tag replacement in the White House.

This will only be the change we will ALL see.

Hey folks, it appears that the George Bush Republicans are the only people who are not affected by the decisions of the BUSH administration.

They are not affected by the huge national debt!!

They are not affect by the lies and deceit (although they are Christians and they should be) that Governor Puppet has told so far!!

They are not affected by the fact that the economy is in the TOILET!!

They are not affected by the fact that The American taxpayer had to take over a bank and Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

None of them are affected by the High Unemployment that exist in Michigan and OHIO.

They are not affected by the failure and cost of lives and money in the IRAQ war.

None of their children died or came home with missing limps due to a War that never should have been authorized!!

My question is HOW ABOUT YOU!!

I am and that is why I'm voting for the Democrats and not the Republicans!!!

I'm a Black man and I'm not voting for Obama because he is Black, I'm voting because he is a DEMOCRAT. I don't care whether it was Hillary, Biden, Edwards, Richardson, Dodd, etc...

The messiah has finally been exposed for what he truly is! The empty suit. And his polls will continue to plunge because NOW, there is truly an alternative to him!

Stop with these silly national polls already! They mean NOTHING as far as the actual election goes. Can we please see some state-by-state polls that are actually useful for determining how this race might turn out. A poll showing us a national dead heat is practically useless. Please deliver useful material. Thanks!

Idiocy anyone? This country needs a lot of prayer and blessings for even coming close to putting flip-flop McSame and his extreme social conservative pitbull in the White House. Maybe a doghouse is more fitting! These national polls are useless. Where are the state by state polls?

I can just imagine all over TV...Anderson Cooper and all the others "John Mcasame is ahead in the polls! Oooo what does this mean? Ahhh... blad blah blah"... let's see the state by state. Thanks.

No thanks. We just want a candidate that has the same values as we do. That's all.

Wait a minute... If Mccain claims to be a break from Bush, and Bush wants to bring 8,000 troops back, does that mean Mccain will NOT bring troops home? Food for thought people.

Enjoy the bounce, the gimmick worked. Now the honeymoon is over and McCain is going to have to face the debates.

RACE BAIT RACE BAIT. Get over it! He is pulling ahead beacause people liked what he had to say and they liked what Palin had to say. They are seeing the cracks in the candidate the DNC shoved down the Dem's throats. How can you win a race when you cannot unite your own party??????

    Racism anyone? No thanks!!!!!!

Wow – who knew that all you had to do to move up in the polls was to bring on an inexperienced VP candidate and have her lie repeatedly in her introductory speech to the nation. You don't have to have any plans to lead or govern once you're elected. All you have to do is insult and distort your oponent's positions. Oh – and claim the slogan that your oponent has used for the past 18 months and pretend that it's your own slogan all of a sudden.

Why do any of you believe in Polls? Its like believeing that the Republicans can change this time around. Let sappeal to our base and select a VP that is more like Karl Rove and Bush! That will get our team motivated!

  20. ex-democrat for McCain / Palin

Obama blew it when he didn't pick Hillary for his Veep! Now his supporters are attacking Sarah Palin for being a stong female, attacking her family, and saying she would be abandoning her family, and other STUPID stuff. Can you say "sexist"? Sarah Palin is MORE qualified to be President than Obama, and she's only running for Vice-President!

The real reason John McCain is doing better in the polls is that almost everyone in the press is talking about Sarah Palin.

The real issue with McCain's selection of running mate and RNC convention is that it reveals John McCain to be a just another Republican hack. His tendency to make impulsive, rash decisions is way too similar to GW Bush. It is no surprise that he claims to have voted with Bush 90-95% of the time. Bush and McCain really are 2 peas out of the same pod.

Impressive math, Eric-29-m-PA. Unfortunately, not every Hillary supporter was polled, not even close, and I think you'll see that when the drama is over, and people go into the quiet of the voting booth, the vast majority of her supporters will not pull the lever for McCain. They have their families to think about, too. And Palin gets more questionable (to put it charitably) every day.

In the meantime, maybe you should talk to someone about your discord fetish.

    Answer one question…….
What if McCain were to die or become disabled before the election.
Does anyone believe the Repubs would have Palin as their candidate??????????
I think we can rest our case………………………..

Because of the antics of the DNC, I am now a proud supporter of the McCain/Palin ticket.

When did feminists and the Democratic party get so hypocritical? The fact is that the RNC re-invents itself every four years and the democratic party clings to their old beliefs and scare myths such as McCain will overturn Roe versus Wade. Who do you think buys that stuff? The party acts like I'm an uneducated christian from a third world country.

I hope the Dems lose this election (and I still consider myself a dem) but they need to evolve and move from the old party platform to a new one; just adding a front man who flip flops every week like a fish out water is not the solution.
