McCain Palin fires back over book ban rumor

(CNN) - The McCain-Palin team is continuing its pushback campaign against stories about VP nominee Sarah Palin that have taken on a life of their own on the Internet.

Watch: Abbi Tatton on the Palin book ban rumor

On Monday, they sent reporters a memo in response to reports that the Wasilla, Alaska resident had tried to ban a lengthy list of books when she was mayor of that town.

“This is categorically false. The fact is that as Mayor, Palin never asked anyone to ban a book and not one book was ever banned, period,” McCain campaign spokesman Brian Rogers said, directing reporters to campaign research "debunking this smear."

Watchdog Web site snopes.com has also debunked an e-mail that purports to include a list of books Palin tried to ban – several of which were not even published in 1996, when the message says her attempt took place. Factcheck.org also published a lengthy list of rumors they had found to be false under the headline "Sliming Palin."

The language used echoes that of the Obama campaign’s “Fight the Smears” Web site and “Obama Action Wire” e-mails, which look to discredit false rumors about the Democratic nominee.

The McCain campaign has issued increasingly aggressive responses to rumors about the presumptive Republican VP nominee, including some detailed public statements denying sensational stories that had not previously been reported by any mainstream media organizations.

I think the image of Palin is clear without making anything up. All flash and no substance. McCain is obviously smitten by appearance.

The fact is, in 1996, when she became mayor of Wasilla, Sarah Palin asked Mary Ellen Emmons, the Librarian in Wasilla, whether she would be OK with removing books from the shelves if asked to do so. She was asked by Mrs. Palin at least three different times. Ms. Emmons rightly (and empahtically) said "no way". Ms. Emmons then got a letter from Palin, saying that she was fired. However, the residents of Wasilla liked and respected Emmons and rose up in her defense, and ultimately she was able to keep her job.
While Mrs. Palin may have never had a specific list of books to ban in her hands, she clearly thought it would be her right to limit what the people of the community could read. It is only because the townspeople rose up in defense of Ms. Emmons that stopped Mrs. Palin from developing a list of books to ban.
Do not let anyone convince you that Mrs. Palin would never censor, remove or ban a book–she clearly has contemplated the action.

McCain needs to bring up the fact that Obama cast a yes vote for the bridge to nowhere. Obama acts so innocent.

Why can't this woman speak to the press? Why do we have to wait until McCain tells you what to say. Why can't we find out what you really think. Like how you wanted the Bridge to nowhere until it was a dead deal and then you were against it. Or how if a woman or young girl is raped or a victim of incest she can't have an abortion. Thanks sarah but no thanks!!!

Because all I can do is talk...I can't actually produce change! Now what am I supposed to do! Oh Crap....there goes history!

Why won't you discuss your proposal on the economy, Sarah? Oh that's right, because you and John don't know "Jack" about the economy. That's our #1 problem right now. Seems to me if you wanna be leaders of this country, you might want to study up on the economy BEFORE November.

Obama made a very bad mistake when he didn't pick Hillary. Most of us PUMA voters will be voting for OMoma. And another thing folks- stop watching Opray who endorsed Obama doing her silly dance.

I think McCain must believe that women are stupid. We recognize a ploy when we see one. Fact is Mccain is afraid of the issues, so he has exposed us to this sad "'hillary substitute" who will in fact reinforce the notion that women are unable to lead. Hillary is a qualified women, not a figure head. Democrats we must show up on Nov 4, and elect Barack Obama our next President of the United States. Don't let the Republicans and the media still another election. We literally can not afford a 3rd Bush term. Think back to the time when your sons and daughters were safe at home, not fighting a war we were suckered into, or when your home was not in foreclosure. The person who we select as president should not be determined by an attempt to once again distort the truth or take us away from the issues we face as a nation by parading Sarah Palin around as if she is the next best thing. Lets not get caught up in another lie. Don't believe tha Bush is not Advising McCain on how to steal an election. We ARE SMARTER THAN THIS !!!!!

All I can say is that if John McCain gets into the WHITE HOUSE we better hope and pray that he has good health. I voted for Hillary because I knew that Bill would be right there to help her, but I would not vote for this power hungry woman, she would probably boot McCain out just so she could be President.

I have people in Alaska and I happen to know that she did for a fact ask that books be removed. If thats not attempting to ban, then I don't know what is.

She did ask about banning books. they were not banned because she got big kick back.

That is very different from the fake list being sent.

just because a fake list was made does not make the fact that she asked about banning books untrue.

First Obama and his supporters attack her because she's a working mother, now they are attacking her for her religion. Funny, when she heard something offensive in her church, she left and joined another. Obama sat and listed to hate and racism for 20 years, and dedicated a book to the man spreading the hate. Of course he threw him under the bus later, but those are the facts. Obama sat and listened to a man who said we deserved what happened to us on 9/11. Now he's attacking her religion, that is rich! My personal belief is that religion doesn't belong in politics, but Obama has a lot of nerve! He really sounds desperate!

Amazing that the only backing of Palin right now on the blogs, is trying to out smear Obama with changing the subject. Any questioning of her statements, present or past is met with shouting what about such and such for Obama. The republicans can't back her up because most of them have not idea where she stands or what she has said in the past. Obama has been vetted by the blogs, media, and the american people for the last 18 months, Your new candidate IS going to be vetted, by the blogs, media, and the american public. Your choice.

McCain scares me...seriously. He's hot headed and pro-war. Palin is a joke. I'm so worried about our environment and economy. PLEASE PEOPLE...WAKE UP!

The facts are starting to come out about Palin's actions, and this is just the beginning. Fortunately she will have to exposed for the narrow minded, ill prepared opportunist that she is. Is anyone wondering about her commitment to care for her Down Syndrome child? That is a full time job for life. With that baby only four months old, who is going to take care of that child? Obviously not her. Is this who we want as a heartbeat away from the President?

McCain's camp also said she "stopped" the bridge to no where... and about 4 other major things from eBay to taxes to the most earmarks per capita (10x Obama's) (200 million for '09 '10 year) and left Wasyla in 27m in debt!

oh, and she takes away property tax or something and sends a check to everyone... and then asks for earmarks from the US Govt! what a CROOK!
