(CNN) - The McCain-Palin team is continuing its pushback campaign against stories about VP nominee Sarah Palin that have taken on a life of their own on the Internet.

On Monday, they sent reporters a memo in response to reports that the Wasilla, Alaska resident had tried to ban a lengthy list of books when she was mayor of that town.
“This is categorically false. The fact is that as Mayor, Palin never asked anyone to ban a book and not one book was ever banned, period,” McCain campaign spokesman Brian Rogers said, directing reporters to campaign research "debunking this smear."
Watchdog Web site snopes.com has also debunked an e-mail that purports to include a list of books Palin tried to ban – several of which were not even published in 1996, when the message says her attempt took place. Factcheck.org also published a lengthy list of rumors they had found to be false under the headline "Sliming Palin."
The language used echoes that of the Obama campaign’s “Fight the Smears” Web site and “Obama Action Wire” e-mails, which look to discredit false rumors about the Democratic nominee.
The McCain campaign has issued increasingly aggressive responses to rumors about the presumptive Republican VP nominee, including some detailed public statements denying sensational stories that had not previously been reported by any mainstream media organizations.

You can google the truth on google.com. Just type in Sarah Palin. It wasn't too hard to find the stuff on banning books. Do the research yourselves for the truth. Don't trust anyone else with this because it is too important an issue. It also talked about her husband belonging to an organization that wanted to separate Alaska from the U.S., and Ms. Palin was in support of that as well. Banning books–what next? Burning witches at the stake?

I wouldn't be at all suprised if this were true. The are so many things she wants to ban and outlaw because of her extreme right wing views she probably would want to make anything she disagrees with unavailable.
What she would want available to the general public is how good it is to slaughter animals, including the Alaskan grey wolf by guns from airplanes, taking science back hundreds of years by teaching creationism in schools, the "sin" of teaching birth control in schools (we know where that got her), and the ridiculous stance that climate change is not man made. Not only is she stupid, she's a liar and her background is filled with scandal.
And she sucks as a mother. Who would drag five children, one an infant with special needs and one teenager that is five months pregnant along the campaign trail. She is completely self-centered. I thought the conservatives were family first! She may come from outside the Washington circle, but she fits in with the nutty conservatives as if she were trained for their crazy views.
Hillary supporters will not vote for Sarah Palin just because she's a woman. In fact, she's the extreme opposite of Hillary. If by chance some women do vote for Palin because they're angry about Hillary not making the ticket, they were never loyal to her platform in the first place. Shame on any Hillary supporters who do this.

Even if books werent banned, doesnt anyone find it odd that she asked the librarian about doing it......still weird if you ask me. Check factcheck to see that she did still have the conversation with the librarian about it.
Also, if she would actually come out and tell people something besides her stump speech, maybe people could then focus on the real issues with her as a VP pick, namely her willlingness to deceive the American people about the bridge to nowhere and her religious-nut reputation.

a little more information please–you have provided information that indicates that the rumor is false, but what is the origin of it? is it true that she did inquire about how to go about banning books? when the librarian told her that she would have no part in an attempted ban, did ms. palin try to fire her? was there a public outcry as a result? is there kernel of truth to these claims, or are they spun of whole cloth?
you do us as readers a disservice when you simply report what the candidates tell you and do no additional investigation.

I thought that she asked the librarian that if in the future she wanted to ban a book ,she could. That's not banning a book, it's asking that she might want to in the future, and if so, could she? Interesting how the GOP spin it to make it sound like they have now completely debunked the rumor, even though careful internet investigation have turned over the intricate details.
When it comes to unsubstantiated rumors about Obama it's 'outrageous' and 'underhanded' but when unsubstantiated rumors circulate about MCCain/Palin then all the Obama supporters keep parroting them as if they were facts.

Facts aren't going to slow down the Obama bloggers from smearing Palin. I have aleady read dozens of comments saying she had books banned. They could be presented with all the evidence in the world and it still wouldn't deter them. They're afraid of her and fear does remarkable things to Obamabots.

Uh huh, right. And Sarah Palin did not fire the Wasilla Police Cheif for no reason . Also Palin did not run up a twenty two million dollar debt for her tiny town that had no debt prior to Palin being Mayor. Debunk and deny but the Wasilla Librarian and Town council are sticking by their story. And keep threatening the Enquirer for exposing Palins extra marital affair. I never heard she tried to ban any books or that there was a list. But, she did fire the Librarian and there was a protest and she relented. She did ask about removing books. But, Nothing specific. But, it does make me wonder if given the chance she would be a book burner.
