McCain Palin fires back over book ban rumor

(CNN) - The McCain-Palin team is continuing its pushback campaign against stories about VP nominee Sarah Palin that have taken on a life of their own on the Internet.

Watch: Abbi Tatton on the Palin book ban rumor

On Monday, they sent reporters a memo in response to reports that the Wasilla, Alaska resident had tried to ban a lengthy list of books when she was mayor of that town.

“This is categorically false. The fact is that as Mayor, Palin never asked anyone to ban a book and not one book was ever banned, period,” McCain campaign spokesman Brian Rogers said, directing reporters to campaign research "debunking this smear."

Watchdog Web site snopes.com has also debunked an e-mail that purports to include a list of books Palin tried to ban – several of which were not even published in 1996, when the message says her attempt took place. Factcheck.org also published a lengthy list of rumors they had found to be false under the headline "Sliming Palin."

The language used echoes that of the Obama campaign’s “Fight the Smears” Web site and “Obama Action Wire” e-mails, which look to discredit false rumors about the Democratic nominee.

The McCain campaign has issued increasingly aggressive responses to rumors about the presumptive Republican VP nominee, including some detailed public statements denying sensational stories that had not previously been reported by any mainstream media organizations.

In addition, to banning women's right to abortion under any circumstance she also have plan what everybody should read and do not read. All I can say is god save us before she sends militia around to make sure there are no banned books in everybody’s house.

It is truely amazing that the people who think they are the base of the republican party (low and middle income blue collar, church going whites) continue to think that voting the same type of people into office is going to give them a different result.

You're anti choice or pro life?

You just had a Republican President for 8 years, a Republican Congress for 6 years, and a moderate to conservative court for that entire time.

I dont' remember any hard republican push to overturn Roe v. Wade.

Every four years they try to get the so called "base" to turn out to vote for prolife, pro gun, less government, anti gay presidents and representatives and they never deliver.

    You are all being used.

The sad part is you don't even care as long as someone you think you can't stand doesn't win. What is that phrase about cutting off your nose to spite your face?

And now you're considering voting in someone more hawkish than Bush to send your sons and daughters off to fight thier corporate wars for the sake of patriotism?

McCain was just in clips about expanding markets for American products. Wake up. He was talking about CAFTA without naming it. One of his first trips as a candidate was to Columbia, a nation one of his staffers is a lobbiest for. Say goodbye to more American jobs.

When are you all going to wake up and realize that the true base of the republican party really does have an income of several hundred thousand dallors to several million dallors. Look at his tax cut proposal.

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting different results

This doesn't make any sense. I read in TIME Magazine about this. Something's up. I expect TIME to stand by the story and reveal their sources.

Why is CNN chasing down rumors to make Palin look better instead of holding her accountable for the lies she has told and giving the American people an accurate picture of her flip flops, half-truths, and misstatements?

    Oh, that's right. They're in McCain's pockets.

We should ALL boycott CNN next week until they stop the bull and give us UNBIASED coverage of BOTH candidates.

Wolf Blitzer and the rest of the biased crew are PATHETIC.

Until Palin gives the media free access for questioning on the issues that every AMERICAN (especially those like me who are in uniform and deploying all over the globe) then no legitimate news source should be chasing down rumors and dispelling them for her.

CNN should be pressing Palin to go on the record clear and simple in an open interview, and unless she does that you should STOP covering anything about her, and you certainly should not be her watchdog hired to debunk any negative statements about her.

DO YOUR JOBS! QUESTION THIS CANDIDATE AND REPORT THE NEWS!!!

Its funny watching the Republicans whine about "smear" campaigns when they themselves have mastered that art to shameful degrees. If Palin and McCain can't stand the heat, get the hell out of the kitchen. This is nothing compared to some of the Republican lie machine ala Karl Rove and even Bush Sr. with the Willie Horten debacle. Republican self righteousness makes me nauseous.

Hmmmm... this needs further scrutiny. Maybe ban is not the right term? Maybe the entire list is not correct, but maybe something on the list, or maybe something not on the list? Was there an incident that involved a specific librarian that pertained to book removal?

Can you clarify this, Gov. Palin? I hope ABC asks the right questions so we can get to the meat of the matter, once and for all.

  18. The truth please

Could the media please call her out on the rest of her LIES. Bridge to nowhere whole truth, her little town of Wasilla go $27 million in earmarks. Firing the chef, selling the plane on ebay. Reformer when she clearly went out and works just as all other politicians and shop for earmarks. The McCain campaign is playing the media and the American people like a bunch of fiddles. Hillary and Obama were called out on everything. Even McCain has gotten some scrutiny. C'mon what is the phrase "Man up"? Well, report up.

I just find it hard to believe that Time Magazine and other reliable sources got it all wrong. And also a neighbor, Anne Kilkenny, who lived under her supposed Executive Experience as a citizen of Wasilla.
Are they also going to say she doesn't believe Alaska has something to do with the biblical end times, that she encourages the shooting of wolves and bear because they compete with her gun buddies, that she wants to take Polar Bears off the endangered species list because they are inconvenient to her drill, drill, drill, that the gas pipeline she is bragging about will not be completed until 2018 if at all, that if we were to drill in ANWR there would be no possible discovery of oil for at least 5 years if not more, that she believes Global Warming is a Hoax, that she didn't take the money for the bridge to nowhere even though they didn't build a bridge (I guess it's ok to take earmarks as long as you don't use the money for what it was originally intended), that she is actually GW Bush in a skirt. Just read her resume... Do I need to go on? I guess I should fall in lockstep and vote for her because she is a woman. Issues, we don't need no stinkin' issues.
I guess if they would let her be interviewed by the press, we would know more about her. But, when you hide your candidate behind the Republican Iron Curtain, than you get what you deserve. And this exclusive, bogus, interview on ABC where McCain's cronies call the shots. What a sham. If she wants to be VP she should be out in the trenches like all the rest, not behind the suits of the McCain's team of manipulating lobbyist.

Then why the hell did Palin try to fire the local librarian in Wasilla? It may not be the list of books that has been rumored but local citizens have reported she did try to fire the librarian in Wasilla and a bunch of citizens stuck of for the librarian defeating Palin. And she was not happy. So while this rumor may not be entirely true, it is true that Palin tried to fire the librarian and she LOST.

Palin certainly lied about selling the state plane on Ebay for a profit. It was listed on Ebay, but when it did not sell they used another source to sell the plane at a LOSS or 600 thousand dollars and now the person who bought the plane says the state needs to spend 50 thousand dollars for repairs the plane needs.
If she will lie about a plane then she will lie every chance she gets. Certainly, if she is half as smart as the republicans say she is, she should have known that would story would not fly and it would be found out in a hurry, which it was.
I am betting there will many more lies she tells that will be corrected.

You know, there cannot be that many rumors going around
    without some having substance.
Did anyone question the librarian she tried to get fired?
Some have been proven true, now waiting for more.
The woman has no qualms about distorting the
    truth.
And this hockey mom has the nerve to run down and tell
lies about dedicated, honorable politicians, when she
is a nothing but an attack pit bull,
