McCain Palin fires back over book ban rumor

(CNN) - The McCain-Palin team is continuing its pushback campaign against stories about VP nominee Sarah Palin that have taken on a life of their own on the Internet.

Watch: Abbi Tatton on the Palin book ban rumor

On Monday, they sent reporters a memo in response to reports that the Wasilla, Alaska resident had tried to ban a lengthy list of books when she was mayor of that town.

“This is categorically false. The fact is that as Mayor, Palin never asked anyone to ban a book and not one book was ever banned, period,” McCain campaign spokesman Brian Rogers said, directing reporters to campaign research "debunking this smear."

Watchdog Web site snopes.com has also debunked an e-mail that purports to include a list of books Palin tried to ban – several of which were not even published in 1996, when the message says her attempt took place. Factcheck.org also published a lengthy list of rumors they had found to be false under the headline "Sliming Palin."

The language used echoes that of the Obama campaign’s “Fight the Smears” Web site and “Obama Action Wire” e-mails, which look to discredit false rumors about the Democratic nominee.

The McCain campaign has issued increasingly aggressive responses to rumors about the presumptive Republican VP nominee, including some detailed public statements denying sensational stories that had not previously been reported by any mainstream media organizations.

I saw the purported list and noted that several of the book on it were published after 1996. HOWEVER, what is a matter of pubic record is that Palin asked the Wasilla librarian if she would be "receptive" to removing certain books and the librarian replied with an emphatic "no," she would NOT be receptive. She was later fired by Palin. To even think that in America today a pubic official would suggest banning or removing books he/she found objectionable is incredible in and of itself. But worse, is a public official who believes he or she is an instrument of God's will, or who invokes God to support, for example, a pipeline project. Palin may seem like the Mom down the street, but her views are extreme in the extreme.

She may not have banned books, but she did speak to someone about "what would happen if I told you to ban objectionable books.." Hiding behind a hypothetical statement is just as bad as lying. If you vote for her to be your VP and McCain to be your President...you deserve every single thing you get.

Sarah – the champion of the small brain people – ban what you don't understand (or at least try until the towns people revolted).

  6. The truth please

She is a politician much the same as Bush. She has a style of not really wanting to get her hands dirty rather have other people do it for her. Not my words but a newspaper in Alaska. I am so unsure which say she really thinks. She was for the bridge before she was against it. She is a reformer but takes millions in earmarks. The right wing conservatives are so happy with Palin that they are now spinning her daughter's pregnancy as okay? I remember when Jamie Lynn Spears got pregnant the people on another network F_X Network as well as a very famous right wing radio show with R.B. initials. On the pinhead front. The blame falls primarily on the parents of the girl who obviously have little control over her and says the parents are the culprits respectively. Amazing.

Paling should say I take pride in changing my positions!! She claimed during the acceptance speech that she had rejected the funds from Fed. to build the "bridge to nowhere". Now the real truth is out – she was for it (in fact the reports say she wanted it built earlier than scheduled) before the flak was raised and then she started saying she doesn't want the earmark!! and the beauty of it is that she took the $233 million dole out anyways to buy votes of Alskans by using that money for other projects in Alaska!! What a sleezy person.

Idiots who spread rumors like this should realize that by doing this they only serve to discredit ALL anti-Palin stories legit or not.

So this list is wrong, actually I believe the list was a joke, but the underlaying facts are true?

  13. FactCheck

No she didn't ban any books. She just asked the librarian to remove them from the library. Get used to it because this is exactly what the next 4 years will be like under these clowns. Then we can all argue over whether water-boarding is torture, whether the earth is only a few thousand years old and how a pregnant 17 year old is a blessing so long as she is a Republican.

Palin tried to get the librarian fired once she knew that she would not ban any books. However, thanks to the residents of Wasilla the librarian was not fired.

This is what CNN should have posted.

The list may be bogus but the fact that she asked about whether she could have books banned is not. She's one scary woman who seems to think she is all-powerful. Imagine what could happen if she were VP or President.

  17. a dem in jax fl voting for obama

in the interview i saw, the librarian said that mayor palin came to her and asked how would someone go about getting a book off of the shelf at the library that they would be opposed to.......and later when the mayor was asked about this, she said she was asking hypothetically.

a social conservative "hypothetically" asking to get certain books removed that someone doesnt think it is appropriate for the entire town.

lol.. that would be like vp cheney how to "hypothetically" how someone could waterboard someone without facing charge of crimes against humanity...

more of the same.. not for me

obama/biden because we cant afford another big spending social conservative and and war mongering neoconservative in a "fiscal conservative" costume... how can anyone trust the party that gave us the wonderful bush/cheney years.. i dont

Now McCain's people might understand what it feels like to be smeared. They've been smearing Obama since he began his campaign. Maybe supporters and opponents can call a truce and debate the issues, instead?

this just proves that the radical and extremist factions of both sides are the most dangerous to our political future. since there is now a backlash against the comments about plain's parenting style, the new angle to have people believe that she is someone who will support book bans, and who knows, maybe dare we say it... book burnings. the extreme left and extreme right are what is mainly wrong with our politics. a close second is the dumb politicians who cater to these elements and further divide americans. let's all come together to birng back common sense into our politics.

What is the real reason that she asked for the resignation of the librarian then?

Did she or did she not say she knew "in her heart" that she did not have the librarian's support?

What would be the impact in a 5000 person town of the Mayor "not having the support" of the town librarian?

ASK THE QUESTIONS – IT'S YOUR JOB!!! WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?

  21. Republican Voting Democratic

Sarah Palin needs to be playing with her children before playing politics.

The women has 5 kids, one who is pregnant, and one with serious special needs. This is just selfish and pathetic how this lady has LEFT EVERYONE OF HER CHILDREN BEHIND FOR HER OWN SELFISH NEEDS!

Anyone who claims to be conservative and votes for anyone like this is NO conservative!

I will be voting for Barack Obama.

I have said it before and I will say it again:

Senator Obama, can you spell U-N-E-L-E-C-T-A-B-L-E?

Here's a hint: it starts with H-I-L-L-A-R-Y. And to all of you young people who will not show up on November 4: do you get it now why us Hillary supporters (supporters since you were in diapers) are angry at the stolen primaries? Sure, Obama won them fair and square. Congratulations to all of you and for all of your hard work.

And, Congratulations to Governor Palin for standing around for the last 24 months "ruling" Alaska, which has 1.5 times the population that Woodstock had in 1969 (that's Woodstock the concert, not the town).

And let's not forget the 99% support Senator Obama gets from the informed African American voters. Thanks and congratulations to you as well.

I am STILL writing in Hillary Rodham Clinton on November 4, 2008.
You should too, so this disaster never happens again.

  24. Palin=Fraud

"But Gov. Palin's claim comes with a serious caveat. She endorsed the multimillion dollar project during her gubernatorial race in 2006. And while she did take part in stopping the project after it became a national scandal, she did not return the federal money. She just allocated it elsewhere." -Wall Street Journal.

Fact Check that, McCain! You ran on this bridge to nowhere tirade and then you picked a supporter/flip flopper/Sen. Ted-Stevens lover as your VP! Keep it up!

  25. James Nailed It

James, you hit he nail on the head. The Repugs are trying to maintain an unholy alliance. The Repug lobbyists and neocons have used and abused conservative Christians who are of meager to modest means in the name of God, gays, guns, abortion, and the threat of increases in taxes. Senator Obama is right. The Repugs do a good job o running campaigns, but a very poor job of governing. Reagan was bad, Bush was worse, and McCain would be even worst.

Unless a person is racist and just can;t get over the fact that Obama is biracial, there is NO acceptable excuse for supporting the McCain/Palin ticket. Jesus asked: How can you hate your brother whom you have seen and say that you love Your Father in heaven whom you have not seen.
