McCain Palin fires back over book ban rumor

(CNN) - The McCain-Palin team is continuing its pushback campaign against stories about VP nominee Sarah Palin that have taken on a life of their own on the Internet.

Watch: Abbi Tatton on the Palin book ban rumor

On Monday, they sent reporters a memo in response to reports that the Wasilla, Alaska resident had tried to ban a lengthy list of books when she was mayor of that town.

“This is categorically false. The fact is that as Mayor, Palin never asked anyone to ban a book and not one book was ever banned, period,” McCain campaign spokesman Brian Rogers said, directing reporters to campaign research "debunking this smear."

Watchdog Web site snopes.com has also debunked an e-mail that purports to include a list of books Palin tried to ban – several of which were not even published in 1996, when the message says her attempt took place. Factcheck.org also published a lengthy list of rumors they had found to be false under the headline "Sliming Palin."

The language used echoes that of the Obama campaign’s “Fight the Smears” Web site and “Obama Action Wire” e-mails, which look to discredit false rumors about the Democratic nominee.

The McCain campaign has issued increasingly aggressive responses to rumors about the presumptive Republican VP nominee, including some detailed public statements denying sensational stories that had not previously been reported by any mainstream media organizations.

Obama trolls? We may not all be beauty queens like Sarah, but we're not that ugly.

In a democracy, it's important to be informed about the issues and the leaders before deciding who will be entrusted with the safety of our country and the future of our children. We not only have the right to question, but the duty to do so. Especially since this new face has never been vetted as the other candidates were.

PALIN LIES ON OBAMA AND BIDEN. REPUBLICANS DICTATED TO MEDIA HANDS OFF OF ASKING PALIN QUESTIONS, BUT IT'S OKAY FOR YOU MAKE COMMERCIALS FULL OF LIES ABOUT OBAMA AND IT'S OKAY FOR THE MEDIA TO ATTACK OBAMA AND BIDEN.

IT APPEARS THAT THE REPUBLICANS OWN THE MEDIA !!!!

LIE ABOUT HELPING THEM. PALIN AND MCCAIN ARE AND HAVE ALWAYS BEEN BUSH POLITICS. LIE ABOUT MY PREGNANT TEENAGE DAUGHTER WHO GOT ENGAGED THE NIGHT BEFORE THE CONVENTION WITH NO RING. THE SELF PROCLAIMED REDNECK COMES OUT LOOKING LIKE THE BOY NEXT DOOR. THE PREGNANT TEEN'S BELLY HIDDEN BY A BLANKET AND A BABY IS NOW EXPOSED PROUDLY LIKE CINDERELLA AND PRINCE CHARMING. PALIN WHO IS UNDER INVESTIGATION FOR ABUSE OF POWER BECAUSE SHE FIRED SOMEONE FOR A PERSONAL VENDETTA AND THEN LIED SAYING AS A MAVERICK SHE FOUGHT THE BRIDGE TO NOWHERE, EXCEPT THERE IS FILM SHOWING NOT ONLY HER SUPPORT, BUT HER SITTING NEXT TO THE GOOD OLD BOYS SHE ALLEGED FOUGHT AGAINST AND THE MEDIA PORTRAYS HER A FAIRYTALE PITBULL WITH LIPSTICK, INSTEAD OF THE LYING FRAUD THAT SHE IS.

I am so tired of the big to do going around in regards to Palin, she is just another politician and that's that! I think that the American voters will eventually see that she is just anothe rpolitician and I bet they will realize that she is not the person we want taking care of our finances, foriegn policies and certainly not the person meeting with other countries leaders, considering she can only recite a speeach that has been written by a acampaign. When the shi- hits the fan, she is not going to be able to handle the issues with other leaders who are a completely different breed. As far as I am concerned, Palin is a very divisive person, sarcastic woman and very inexperienced on the national scene. Palin is a great governor for Alaska but she is not ready for the presidency. Obama is a more cool, collective and calm type of person who will bring about change and bring respect back to America in the wrold. CNN, I try and try to post my comments and never get posted. Please don't do it again, post my comments!

  8. real talk from an outside observer

I could never understand the "debate" over the abortion issue. How can government expect to take a personal decision out of the hands of a woman. Will the govenment be around to help raise the child? we all agree that people on welfare and kids in foster homes is bad (drain on the economy etc) so why perpetuate the cycle by trying to force a woman to have a child she will not be able to afford to support?
Palin is anti-abortion no exception and not trying to be insensitive but I wonder what she would have done if God forbid her daughter was raped and got pregnant. If her daughter then wanted to have an abortion (as she probably would) how would that play out.

Mccain wants to stay in Iraq 100 years until victory is gained. First of all what is victory how will it be measured? When will America understand that you are not fighting "insurgents" but an idea which is being perpetuated, grown and spread by yourselves in the relatives of each son, daughter, brother and sister of these iraqis you kill. An idea cannot be fought with guns and bombs but with direct talks. Which Mccain opposes. I'm sure I've filled my space on this blog but just a few points for you guys to think about when voting. Thanks for your time.

  12. Weasel Words ... Hook Her to a Polygraph

These are the same type of "Weasel Words" we've heard from Ms. Palin before.

She did approach the town librarian about censorship. When it became clear to Sarah that the librarian wasn't going to go along AND had the backig of a sufficient number of residents, Ms. Palin backed off.

The list was not as large as has been circulated in a separate email but make no mistake about it, Sarah Palin DID attempt to have books pulled.

By commenting on this large list without addressing the attempts to intimidate the librarian, the McCain Palin ticket is playing fast and loose with words.

You know ... kinda like we she MISLEAD the public (AND HER RUNNING MATE) into believing she sold that jet on EBAY for a profit. We now know she did not.

This is not even a big thing to lie about. If she'd decieve us on this, she'd surely decieve us on the BIG THINGS.

I can not follow John McCain as my leader.

  13. changing times

Dems, Independents & unhappy Republicans, I say this is all a distraction! Don't fall for these distractions. Over the past 8 years America has lost its way due to the failed policies of George Bush and the Republican party!

The Unemployment rate is at its highest ever, thousands of troops are being redeployed to Afghanistan and more killings in Iraq, more ciitizens have lost their homes, jobs and even more. We still have 47 million without healthcare and Fannie Mae & Freddie Mac had to be bailed out to prevent collapse. I say "Enough!"… of the shennanigans of John McCain & Sarah Palin. Lets talk about the issue and stop with the circus McPalin is creating to get people to forget about how far this country has fallen. If you like the past 8 years then vote McPalin…But–if you want real change and someone to take us into the future to help our children and grandchildren then vote Obama/Biden for judgement, wisdom, experience, hope and unity of the American people McCain/Palin=Bush "more of the same insane governance"

Will the news media finally cover the dirty smear campaigns by Obama and his supporters? It did not take long for them to get back in the groove and start to throw the mud. This is what Hillary supporters and PUMAs were talking about during the primaries, the lack of accountability of the media to hold Obama to the same integrity and honor held to other candidates. This is why PUMAs will never forgive Obama and the news media just yawns. Get real and cover the story for goodness sake. You are not covering people running for the most popular slogan, we are looking to vote for the most qualified person to be the President of the United States. By the way, Biden said Obama was not qualified to be President in Iowa, too. Why no coverage of that speech?

"I am a former democrat and Hillary Clinton supporter now enthusiastically for McCain/Palin. They are the authentic reformers with integrity. They will deliver the change Americans believe in!"

They disagree vehemently with every single thing Hillary Clinton stands for. What in blazes is wrong with you?

Pathetic McCain. Now he has to use putty to plug a leaking sinking ship. The honeymoon period it seems to be coming to an end. The little Palin puppy that deserves your protection to unscrupulously secure the presidency is exposed for the fraud she is. The lies she told are catching up and you have to always cry foul. You disseminated lies about Barack. You plagiarized his strategy for change. You and your cronies even stole from his speeches including Lindsay Graham. It is unbelievable that an American hero has stooped so low whilst aspiring for the highest office in the land. Ciao.

  22. REPUBLICAN HYPROCRISY V1.01

    ROLE MODEL #1:

Jamie Lynn Spears was savaged by the far rabid right religious fascists. She was pregnant at 16, and later married. She was presented as the poster child of “moral decay” in America. Her mother Lynn Spears was not spoken of very kindly either.

    ROLE MODEL #2:

Stay with me while I outline a hypothetical situation. A 17 year old teenager will marry in November, 6 months pregnant after ignoring lifelong teachings of "abstinence only" as teenage birth control. The wedding will take place in the Rose Garden and hosted by Bush complete with helicopters hovering just outside the White House no fly zone. Sometime in December the little “blessing” will arrive, perhaps vying for the first New’s Year’s baby. Now, I can only imagine the paparazzi mob scene next May when the mother actually graduates from high school and the price of the resultant shots of her in Senior ‘09 regalia. What would the rabid right say about the hypothetical mother in this case?

So, to recap. For those of you out there that do not understand the definition of Republican hypocrisy, please reread the first two paragraphs until you figure it out.
