The McCain campaign is out with a new ad Monday.

(CNN) - Republicans John McCain and Sarah Palin are out with a new television ad Monday, declaring themselves the "original mavericks."

The 30-second spot, set to air in key states, says McCain and Palin will "make history" and "change Washington."

"He fights pork barrel spending," the ad's narrator states. "She stopped the Bridge to Nowhere. He took on the drug industry. She took on big oil."

Palin's statement claiming to have opposed the now-infamous "Bridge to Nowhere" has been disputed by opponents who note she supported the major earmark when she campaigned for governor of Alaska in 2006. According to the non-partisan factcheck.org, Palin didn't oppose the project until Congress had already nixed it.

What else is above Obama's pay grade?

As an independent, I find it amusing to see the Obama's campaign
(and Obama himself) squirming.

Sometimes it does take a woman to do the man's job, as the RNC

Now OBAMA has been tossed out like yesterdays garbage – how does it feel?? You see the truth always seems to come out. He is not electable!!! He threw Hillary under the bus now he is paying for it!!! My advice to him is to go back to law school and figure it all out. He just DOES NOT get it!!!

The news medias were complicit with the invasion of Iraq by not exposing the truth to the public. Now they are well on their way to destroying America by not exposing the GOP lies and distortions.

At the present time with the polls showing a dead heat America is becoming the laughing stock of the world.

If McCain is the orginal Maverick, he's been in Washington for 28 years and the problem has gotten worse.

Best case scenario, he is a Maverick and one the is completely ineffective.

Worst case scenario, he's not, proclaims to be and is a liar.

Either way, he's not getting my vote.

Wake up America! The issues are yet o be spoken from McCain and Palin. The supreme court nominations is so important and McCain wants another Clarence Thomas! Health care, the economy, the debt, the war, etc. are at issue here. Another four years of Bush! No way!

Wake up people. The time is running short and your vote is very important. Don't be fooled with the Republicans. It will be very difficult for OBAMA to pull us through this mess created by the Republicans. McCain is no different than Bush. Sarah is not qualified to be VP or President. She has had no experience with foreign affairs. Heaven help us.

Gary Chandler in Canada   September 8th, 2008 10:58 am ET

Palin is "'hoping to change McCain's mind"". SHE SAID on drilling in Nature Preserves. How is THAT 'going after big oil'?'
McCain went against Repubs and Dems when he opposed the King Holiday.
He opposed the military torture of detainess, (good politics); but made sure the CIA could still torture detainees, (good politics)
There ARE rumors swirling about his activities as a POW, as well as Kerry's. Funny;;; they BOTH formed a 'bipartisan' Committee to seal any files and documents which could clear up the rumors!!??

Palin thinks she tough by identifying herself with a pit bull. Well, a pit bulls behavior depends on how they are trained. Your are on John McSain's leash and he pulling and using you to get what he wants. By the way, "what does a vice-president do all day?" Those were Palin's words. Doesn't that tell you a great deal about her? Well, it should.

Tom   September 8th, 2008 10:57 am ET

Such liars! She was for the Bridge to Nowhere before it became a political liability, and she still took the money that was supposed to pay for it. My fellow Americans, don't let this ticket play you for fools! They are Bush and Cheney with a war medal and lipstick. McCain deserves honor for what he did in the military, but that will not help him be a good president. He will help the rich and the corporations just like Bush and Cheney. If you want real change designed to help YOU, vote Obama/Biden.

MD in GA   September 8th, 2008 10:57 am ET

If Senator Obama loses this election it will be because of the racism in America. No matter what the polls show, no matter what people are willing to own up to.

If America would rather have an elderly Senator with questionable to poor judgement (and questionable longavity as President) and a totally untested self proclaimed hockey mom turned Govenor vs. a young man with 12 years in the State and US Senate, 12 years teaching CONSTITUTIONAL LAW, and years in actual community service, (not to mention a long time Senator with a proven postive record as a potential VP), with a positive message of change for the first time in nearly 8 years, then the only real reason something like this would happen is racism.

If it looks like a duck, waddles like a duck and quacks like a duck, IT'S A DUCK...

erika   September 8th, 2008 10:56 am ET

Why can't Mccain-Palin if so energized and experienced find a new word and not steal the CHANGE slogan from Dems!!! Stick with Maverick or did you find out that it only really means lazy cattleman. See Maverick was a real person check your history of the 1800's people.

Yogi Bala   September 8th, 2008 10:56 am ET

After 25 years, now McCain is now talking about CHANGE. GOP still thinks people as IDIOTS. People remember McCain only as a national hero and now McCain is trying to change his reputation from a national hero to a election looser.

Obama came from nothing, but with a very positive attitude. Positive attitude is only thing now our country and the world is looking for.

GOP fears positive attitude as liberalism. We, people understand that the world is presently looking for a change to stop the fears, heal the unethical man made wounds and to have a decent living.

This is the time for America to lead the world. NO MORE – Eight years of Untruth – Eight year of Fears – Eight years of No growth.

Let us get back our brother Canada to shake our hands and other friends like France, Germany to dine with us.

Whole world is expecting our decision on a right choice – YES WE CAN!!!

Is Sarah Palin the type of female role model we want for this country? Were saying it's o.k for a teenaged girl to go out and have UNPROTECTED premarital sex! And then praise her for keeping the baby! A baby is the least worry today! What about S.T.Ds and A.I.D.S! I have three young daughters and I do use Mrs.Palin and her daughter as role models of what they SHOULD'NT do!

frank(ex republican)   September 8th, 2008 10:55 am ET

I guess we could try having a standup comic in the white house, we had 8 yrs of bad news with Bush. If we elect McCain we will need something to laugh about. Obama/Biden

julie   September 8th, 2008 10:55 am ET

Palin is a liar and needs to be called on it in Prime Time.....the GOP is very clever......They dress up McCheneyBush in lipstick and deliver a pack of lies with a pretty smile. I was kind of excited about her, as a mother and a new generation of politicians (which we need more of!) now I'm feeling very worried. There was this article in the AP about her church. There are so many questions that are unanswered, why isn't anyone digging deeper? The Obama church scandel was so huge and everywhere – what about Sarah's old Penecostal church, and her new one?? UG. Its depressing.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Gov. Sarah Palin's church is promoting a conference that promises to convert gays into heterosexuals through the power of prayer.

McCain and Palin are no mavericks. And why do they keep saying McCain is ahead of Obama. Not from where I stand. I have never been contacted for the polls and no one I know has ever been contacted. People can't be changing their minds everyday about who they will vote for. McCain picking Palin is a decoy and unfortunately some people seem to be falling for it. Come on America wake up. McCain is at the front of the ticket, not Palin. But when it truly comes down to it, can you really see her being the head of this country? Not me...

Obama '08

TC   September 8th, 2008 10:55 am ET

Please people don't let the polls fool you. Just ask yourself what people are being surveyed in these polls. I know for sure I am not one of those people that has ever been surveyed. McCain/Palin in the White House will be a worse choice than W Bush/Cheney and I thought I would never seen a combination worse than the two of them. Everyone please get out and vote and keep these two out of the White House. I am a woman and this woman know where near represents women in this country. She is not qualified for this position so let's not be fools and give her a job she does not have the qualifications for. Vote Obama/Biden and give America a chance to recover and become respectful to other countries again. Send Sarah back to Alaska. Oh yeah, Sarah's husband loves America so much until he wanted to make Alaska separate. Get real McCain and stop trying to trick America like this family is a wholesome American Family. Please don't insult the American people intelligence.

Brad   September 8th, 2008 10:54 am ET

Why do American's get tricked by words so fake such as "MAVERICK",
when words like, Jobless, Homeless, Foreclosure, Economy , and War should scare them more into voting for CHANGE. Are we that gullible?

I am a single mom, hockey mom to be exact, who lives in Michigan. For the republicans to think that the women in our state are ready to live another 4 years of this mess is ridiculous. I cannot afford to live in a state I was born and raised in if McCain-Palin win. We are much more intelligent than to fall for all of this bull. I wish people in America would vote on issues, not on who has a woman on there ticket. Once again, we could wake up the day after the election and the papers will show that the people in this country who voted for McCain don't care about how they are going to survive paycheck to paycheck, or pay their bills, but they will be happy to have another 4 years of Bush just because there is a women vice president. No wonder the rest of the world does not respect Americans. WAKE UP!

CNN is biased in posting on these blogs. Has anyone else noticed that the blogs are closed with fewer than 10 comments, if the comments appear to be pro Obama. I have tried several times to post blogs that meet all of the requirements of civility, but they are routinely blocked! You need to vet your moderators because they are anti Obama! Are you a news agency or are you a propoganda outlet?
By the way, I question the validity and accuracy of your polls. Why don't you give us the number of people polled and their locations? That is labor intensive, but it is also only fair!

Napoleon Complex   September 8th, 2008 10:53 am ET

There's a good ad running here in North Carolina showing how McCain and Bush are basically the same. It has a video of McCain bragging about voting with Bush more than 90% of the time. Once the evangelicals realize that McCain is an adulterer and when others realize that Palin is worse than Cheney, their polls numbers will drop back to where they were. It will be a tight election, but the electoral map favors Obama and McCain has to win pretty much all of the battleground states to pull off an upset. There's also plenty of time for flash-in-the-pan Palin to fail.

dave g, minneapolis   September 8th, 2008 10:53 am ET

Why isn't CNN reporting that Bob Barr is the only candidate to legally file for the ballot in TX. Under TX state law, the Republicans and Democrats have missed the deadline.

The secretary of state of TX is now claiming that they did file, but the paperwork proves they didn't (and the fact that McCain didn't even declare his VP pick until after the TX filing deadline).

Or how about McCain's aides pressuring other states to remove Barr from the ballot? This is not democracy folks!! These are the tactics of old power. Obama did the same thing in Illinois...keep your opponents off of the ballot.

Where is the outrage towards these two parties? You feel upset to vote for either and think there is no choice. Well there won't be a choice if they keep the stranglehold on the ballot.

JP, Colorado   September 8th, 2008 10:53 am ET

Somebody explain to me how this McCain-Pallin ticket can be ahead let alone even close in the polls...Given the last 8 years, our current economy, energy policies (DRILL) and this country's overall diminished standing in the world, how can anybody vote for this ticket? Mavericks? McCain is a self serving political chameleon ...maverick in talk only "I voted with the president over 90% of the time", the reality is that this ticket with the pandering social conservative Pallin is an extension of the present. So somebody please explain to me how Bush and his ineffective, destructive, contra to everything we believe in as Americans policies be perpetuated by this ticket and the American electorate is fine with that! I don't think so. Obama was on a swing and doing just fine until.....Palin. This election was decided before by the same evil ones that orchestrated the Bush election. As an Obama supporter, I say why should Hillary go after Sarah?

What will Hillary go after Sarah on? What are Sarah Palin's public policies and positions, ranging from the economy to Iraq to Pakistan?
I DON'T KNOW!

The only thing America knows about Palin is that she is a self-described hockey mom, has a 5-month old down's syndrome baby, has a 17-year old high school unwed pregnant daughter, Palin is pro-life, and Palin is adamantly pro-drilling. Other than that there is not much to go on, unless you talk about non-direct political issues (like TrooperGate or Praying for Jews to convert to Christianity or attending 5 different schools in 6 years for one degree).

She has roused the conservative Republican base, but what with. I have not seen on TV any voters name specific national issues that Palin believes in.

If Sen. McCain is such a maverick, why was he boasting about how he votes with President Bush 90% of the time?

If Sen. McCain is such a maverick, why did he reverse his position this year to now support President Bush's tax cuts for the richest of people?

If Sen. McCain is such a maverick, why did he originally author legislation on cleaning up the illegal immigration problem, and then reject his own plan this year?

If Sen. McCain is such a maverick, why did he succumb to Karl Rove and not pick his favorite choice, Joe Lieberman, as his VP?

Gov. Palin, who was initially introduced us as a maverick, has so much baggage regarding flip flops that I can't be convinced she's actually reformed much without being pushed into it for political reasons.

The republican lead is a result of the convention energizing the base.
American people get tired of "new" things very fast. After that they want
to see the real person. Hyped up Sarah Palin will be revealed for what
she truly stands for when she is finally interviewed. Then Americans
will decide if they will allow themselves to be swindled once again by
the republicans' dangle of fools gold under their nose to their own
detriment, or will they vote for the REAL change that will benifit them,
and not make the republicans richer, while they get poorer. Don't be
fooled by the republicans AGAIN.

John McCain is the ultimate hypocrite. Cheating on his first wife with several women, and then cheating and marrying Cindy before he was legally divorced. He tries to put this all in the past, saying that it was 30 years ago. Picking Palin was exactly what he did when he picked Cindy. He caught his next ticket up.
Palin as the most popular governor. Well, let's have any governor start handing out dividend checks from oil revenues that we are all paying for, and see if our governor doesn't become the most popular. What a bunch of malarky-(my favorite Joe Biden term.)

Will-SD: John McCain has 26 years in the Senate. Joe Biden has 36 years so I wouldn't even keep bringing that point up.

As far as the funds given AK, yes the money was kept and was used to improve intrastucture and buy a new ferry. Yes she was initially for the bridge but when she saw that the full funding wouldn't be there and interest in the bridge by the people of AK, she then changed her position. So yes she changed her view and as far as Obama is concerned, he's had so many changes in positions that again I wouldn't even go there.

The land of TV where everything is served on an easy to understand platter. It does not matter if it is a lie. If it is easy, the public will go for it because they don't have to think.

America is full of very stupid people. That is a fact.

We will have many ads to endure before we get to hear her speak for herself, or at least away from a script or a screen to read from.

In the meantime we will see many of these flashy, easy to believe, big statement, big emotion, no plan ads.

Think for yourselves, America. Read a newspaper, look up some facts, if you believe everything you see on TV, you'll never believe the mess you'll be in for the next four years.

Sunny   September 8th, 2008 10:45 am ET

If Palin get elected, it woul dbe an isult to the Amrican people. She is an outright autocrat, born liar and totally corrupted lady. All her work in Alaska points to these facts. What she did in Alaska is noe not going to remain in Alaska. She ia a failed mom, failed wife, failed mayor, failed governor – we do not want a failed VP for an laready failed republican President candidate who are going to take charge of an already failed president. How many failures would USA tolerate? We can not afford even a single mistake right now. Mccain-Palin win in November would be the last nail in the coffin.

Mavericks? Agents of change?

The republicans are the ones who put our country in the toilet in the first place, now they are trying to blame Democrats and claim that they will fix everything? HOW STUPID DO YOU THINK WE ARE?

The only people who are buying into this garbage are the closed-minded racist hicks that aren't listening anyway. They're just happy to see another old white man on the ticket and think that by putting any woman up there they are "making history". PATHETIC!!!!

John, FL   September 8th, 2008 10:44 am ET

That's a laugh. 90% similarity to Bush is hardly a maverick in my book.

Missouri Mom   September 8th, 2008 10:44 am ET

Pretty pathetic that they can't even come up with their own slogan. They saw what was working for the dems and jumped on the bandwagon (you know, "change", "a woman on the ticket", etc.). It's laughable, not to mention insulting.

I think the GOP's "bounce" just proves that even the republicans never really liked McCain. They only took an interest when he picked his VP. It seems to me they're voting for HER, NOT him. So, are they hoping McCain just isn't going to "be around" too long? I for one, don't like the idea of a woman who believes that the war taking place is "God calling us to DIE for him" with her trigger finger on the "big button"!

Those lying hypocrites are in my state today, down the road in my sister's town (Lee's Summit, MO). I'd drive there and hold up the biggest OBAMA sign I could... IF I could afford to gas up my car...

Republicans for Truth   September 8th, 2008 10:44 am ET

It is time for the conservative crappy media to shut these stories down ... the media idiots hyped Palin so much to the point of blatantly lying about what she has accomplished, along with McBush. McSame and Palin hasn't done a crap to promote change and in fact, were behind the entire financial mess that this great country is going through right now

Centrist Rob in NC   September 8th, 2008 10:44 am ET

It's not change, it's a takeover.

-Ultra-Conservative views – check.
-Distract voters from reality – check.
-Win ellection – check.
-Appoint more Ultra -Conservative judges – check.
-Veto every bit of legislation from the Dem controlled congress – check
-Blame Dem controlled congress so thery lose 2010 elections – check
-Take control of all three branches of govenment in 2010 – check
-Limit freedom of the press-check
-Tell America how to think, act, speak, worship – check

Folks one of the keys to our country is having arguments for all opinions that lead to compromise for the greater good. Gov Palin has proven the only good view is her view. Please look deeper, ask questions, is this really the person you want leading the "free" world?

I have all the respect in the world for J Mac, but this pick doesn't seem like him. Karl Rove himself said this was a political move not a governing rule.

Olivia   September 8th, 2008 10:44 am ET

I'm sure CNN get as many pro McCain/Palin blogs as pro Obama/Biden ones. Yet......consistently.........they show mostly the pro Obama ones because we all know by now who this network support. The country is talking about it .

Think about it.......if both candidates are running head to head....isn't it then likely that the volume of blogs will run the same proportionately?
Use your heads, people!

Independent Voter in Missouri   September 8th, 2008 10:44 am ET

Are Americans really that conservative that they actually want McCain and ultra conservative Palin?

Or are Americans really that racist? I have compared Obama's plans and McCain's plans from their websites.

Obama wants to revive America. McCain want to fix his broken party.

Do the real research and make a decision about the issues.

The real "bridge to nowhere" is the bridge that exists between "we the people" and our elected officials. If Americans are serious about real change, we would throw the bums out, both parties, demand term limits for the newly elected, and forever hold our newly elected representative's feet to the fire.

Timber. Obama was up 9% last week and frankly most of the electoral season. Was he sure to win then or is it just when Mc Cain gets a convention bounce that it becomes a "in the bag" thing?

Mc Cain/Palin is so vulnerable, i would not be that confident if i were you.If Mc Cain catches a cold , Palin President becomes a reality that will haunt more than one voter.

Rachel   September 8th, 2008 10:42 am ET

The polls are reflecting only up to the time of Palin's speech. All the hypocrtical statements and half truths are not reflected. Public really needs to be educated. I'm nervous that we won't have time to find out the truth about this candidate before its time to vote.

Hmm..doesn't she have her own ideas to talk about, oh right..Mr. Rove is again puppetmaster. McCain camp is crying "stop investigating Sarah Palin" I say..keep on investigating, isn't the whole idea to get to know the candidates? The GOP has yet to spell out any specifics on their plan except more drilling, and keeping our troops in Iraq for the next generation. Good plan!,...Didn't Ms. Palin as governor of Alaska hear about something called Exxon Valdez?, I am sure the swimmers in Miami and Myrtle Beach will love looking over those potential oil slicks. So here is the GOP plan so far..spend more of our money in a place we should never have gone, and potentially wrecking our ecosystem. Oh yes..keep taxing us blue collar workers. Hmm..sounds like a winner al right...Thank god it means winning for OBAMA/Biden 08!

I want to know what polls is the media using that suggest the gap is decreasing between McCain and Obama. Seriously, I haven't received a call nor inquiry about who I am voting on. Why, because majority of society today do not have land lines. We use cell phones! No one is calling cell phones to for a survey. The polls are not factual. Look at the response Obama receives. Look at the comments on these blogs. There is a clear distinction between what the people are saying they want and its not McCain. The republicans said that the VA Gov didnt have enough experience when he was being viewed for the VP spot with Obama, but they select Palin! What a joke.....all I want to say is that all those folks saying they support Obama/Biden, please show up on Tues, Nov 4th and actual excercise that vote. Please....if you don't then we will end up in more of the same, which is nothing.

McCain may have been a maverick, somewhere in his political career but he is certainly courting the conservative way of thinking. America don't get caught up in the hype. Seems to me that people of this country are suicidal like they have been in 2004. They have not learned from their mistake then and are just about to commit another. How can one possibly fall into the traps of this mediocre and incompetent team of republicans? Their lack of knowledge is so obvious ( a pageant contest runner up comes out swinging at things she clearly does not have a clue about: you may not need a community service in Alaska but you clearly do in Chicago and a law degree helps you to address issues with some competence whereas no education is a handicap even in politics but perhaps not in Alaska) that you need to be intoxicated by religion to not see the disaster of another incompetent government coming. Good night America on its way to insignificance.

White guy screaming racism   September 8th, 2008 10:38 am ET

Here are some facts:

70% of Americans don't think George Bush is doing a good job
90% of the time John McCain has voted with George Bush
75% of Americans don't think the country is going in the right direction

The sensible conclusion – don't vote for McCain, unless Obama is an idiot, which he clearly is not. If Obama were Bill Clinton, this would be one of the biggest blowouts in history. You connect the dots.

Charlotte   September 8th, 2008 10:38 am ET

OOPS.. When you ignore half your base what can do expect. A sleeping giant has been awakened..Obama has no, zero, nada to show for his time in office. He had the competition eliminated in his run for State Senator. Chicago politics at it's best. He then spent most of his time writing two memoirs. Does anyone believe he wrote those on his own time? I don't know if he did or not, but he spent his time doing something besides his job, much like now. How many of you can show up for work a mere 145 days in almost three years? I am a Hillary supporter and a life long democrat. I also cross party lines and vote for who I feel is the better candidate. For those Obama-bots who like to mention the Keating Five, do you even know, 4 of the 5 Senators were Democrats? Of the five Senators, McCain was the least involved.. I remember it as a time I was ashamed to admit I was a Democrat, sort of like now. I will say, I am impressed with Gov. Palin at this point in time. I do not agree with all the positions of either party. When the experience of a Presidential candidate is compared to the VP candidate, it is a sad day for the Democrats. No one seems to be questioning Biden or McCains' ability to be President. Is Obama, a heart beat away?

In one breath, they mock community organizers (Palin and Guliani), then in the next, tell people to get out, help their government make change (McCain). The GOP is all over the place with no clear direction. No message until now after the clipping of Obamas theme and DNC message.

Now they want to reform? Oh Please! McCain has lobbyist and ear-mark specialists guiding his champaign.

Like Biden said, where is the plan on college costs, health care, etc.? Unemployment just went up again, foreclosures is at an all time high. No one, Palin or McCain talked about inflation or this recession we’re in. Vets are being mistreated and McCain dodged the voting on a package to support the troops.

All of your complaining about Mccain/Palin is baseless...more sour grapes than anything.

Earl   September 8th, 2008 10:35 am ET

I believe everyone here wants to know ALL the truth..not just bits

So here are a few questions Ms Palin before the election:

1. Since you were pregnant and you started to leak fluid, during a
speech in Texas, you chose to finish your speech and then fly for
11 hours back to Alaska. And then drive for 45 minutes to a hospital
in a small town to have a baby with health problems.

How so?...you would think that you would want the best care possible
for yourself and the baby at a large city to handle your needs.

2. I read in your newspaper that you gave birth to a 6lb 2oz baby boy.
Which you have told us that he was born 4 weeks premature.

Does a premature baby not weigh less if premature?..just asking.
Did you transport yourself and baby to a neo-natal unit because he was premature?..No because you were back to work 3 days after giving birth. THAT'S ODD

3.Why are all the family pictures taken off the govt and other websites?

Are there things there you don't want us to see?...Too late we've already seen them.

4. It's odd that the only baby's parents name that was born in the hospital on that day was definitely NOT Palin. Newspapers are printed

Looks like the MSM hasn't the gazoo's to check on these questions because the Repub will call it "sexist"

HERE'S MY TAKE ON IT....

You got a phone call when in Texas that Bristol was going into labor, so you booted it for home to make a good coverup.

Either there are going to be a lot of people perjure themselves, either way you and McWar are in a whole pile of hurt.

WAIT FOR IT.....NATIONAL ENQUIRE IS DOING MSM'S HOMEWORK

CountdowntoChange   September 8th, 2008 10:35 am ET

Can Sen Obama sound it to all Americans not to avoid the traps of 2004 by electing for real "issues-driven" change? Also the strategy of staying focused on McCain and blanking out his VP by the Obama camp is clearly not working going by recent polls. My advice – Sen Obama should square on Sen McCain whilst Joe Biden should rise up to the Sarah surge. As an observer, another 4 more years of you guys (the US) continuing in the direction of the last 4 would definitely lead to unknown countries overtaking the US as global superpowers. We've already seen this with China, India and Russia......and there are more waiting in the wings!!!

NO DOUBT both parties will try their best in selling their plan

to pay with tax dollars

the 300 billion minimum debt of freddie and fannie

incurred during the plundering and defrauding

by the wall street loan-sharks for the last three decades,

insuring the even further financial gains by the same loan-sharks and war-profiteers,

who have already made billions in housing / commodities / military-industry bubbles.

Make sure you vote for the same sellouts to send to washington.

Timber -

Slow your roll buddy, the polls DON'T MEAN SQUAT buddy, anyone with a brain would know that. They don't reflect majority of voter's view and therefore is NOT accurate on any level.

The question here is WHY hasn't your OLD MAN McCain maintained a BIG LEAD since day one? He's been in the Senate for 28+ years now, this should be a SLAM DUNK for him, WHY isn't he winning by 15-20+ points consistently? WHY?

So he's in the lead now, so WHAT? Why hasn't the Maverick, Straight Talker, Reformer and NOW the Change Candidate maintaining a 15-20+ point lead since day one? I mean that's the million dollar question here....

Sen. Obama has been maintaining his lead since day one, he's dropped down, but has ALWAYS come back and taken the lead. I mean this coming from a Jr. Senator? Wow..... that's odd that your tooting John McCain's horn here when he's NEVER maintained a LEAD since day one!!!

Hummmm what's wrong with this picture?

Since the flower power generation of 1968, liberalism has been rejected by the overall public.. Carter won because of Watergate and Ford was never really elected. Perot beat Bush, not Clinton.

And why has bush and co. adopted Obama's diplomatic stance on North Korea, Iran and now Russia? And what ever happened to the gas tax holiday scam mccain promised?

George W.Bush + white hair, Dick Cheney + lipstick. Please see through the evil, people. Just watched 'Inside 911' on Natgeo yesterday; after the horrible events of Sept. 11, 2001, what the republican-led government has done so far is to hand over exactly what Bin Laden wanted: Americans on his turf. Although he is not winning the 'war in afghanistan', he's not losing it either, is he? I'm an independent, and as far as I see it, I will vote for someone who promises me that atleast the mistakes of yesterday will not be repeated. McCain was with Bush 90% of the time, Palin is charming but a hypocrite; I don't see how the McCain – Palin ticket is different from the 2000 republican ticket.

CO   September 8th, 2008 10:33 am ET

Let's hear what Palin knows or doesn't know. She'll be challenged on everything eventually. Now she's being protected so she can't show her incompetence for the VP job.

GrammieJ from TN   September 8th, 2008 10:32 am ET

And we women are all "pitbulls with lipstick", I take full offensive at that remark. That was a total sexist thing to say on national TV.
Mc/Palin are so out of touch with reality. How does someone with 7 or more huge homes understand the trials and struggles of the majority of Americans? Or someone who leaves their children "latch-key" understand how a young single mom survives in this world?
Wake up folks, we are in deep "doodoo" with this out of touch ticket.
Obama understand hard respectable work and how change is so desparately needed. He will work for the American people.

Larry Kincaid   September 8th, 2008 10:32 am ET

Timber,
In reality, what people are seeing is Karl Rovian politicking at work. And we ignorant American's are falling for it hook, line, and sinker. Forget the issues, make it all about personality. Who could be against a "war hero and a soccer mom". These two are supposed to represent family values – yet one ditched his first wife for a younger more attractive version and the other, well, her family could have been on the simple life with all those out of wedlock kids running around. Some values. But people, you know, don't worry about issues. Keep clining to your religion, Barack has been proven 100% right on that. People will ignore the issues (at their own peril) just to back someone who has the (media-driven) image of a Tough Guy (and gal). Laughable, but sad what we have become.

Alex   September 8th, 2008 10:32 am ET

De-regulation of the mortgage industry has led directly to the current mortgage crisis and the government taleover of Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, putting American people on the hook for literally trillions of dollars in mortgage loans.

Who is responsible for that de-regulation? Why, it's McCain economic adviser Phil "Mental Recession," "Nation of Whiners" Gramm.

Enjoy President McCain's maverick change.

James in NY   September 8th, 2008 10:32 am ET

jm for sc   September 8th, 2008 10:32 am ET

Timber,
If you poll a bunch of republicans, you will get those type results. People would have to be out of their minds to fall for McCain and Palin. That empty suit comment is getting old. Besides, if a man that has strived and gain the knowledge and accomplishments Obama has is empty, then people has really discounted education, being a professor, being a state senator, working with actual people in his community that was hurting as well as his time as a US Senator as nothing. I wonder why? McCain is using his POW experience as qualification to become president.

Obama/Biden 08; only a fool would vote to continue sending our troops to Iraq to fight for oil in the name of terror.

Obama is down in polls for NOT choosing Hillary.

So, where are Roland Martin, Suzzane Malveaux, Jack Cafferty, and Gloria Borger with their biased journalism? If we lose this election to the Republicans, those individuals must share the blame. Their biased commentaries towards Hillary Clinton pave way to Joe Biden and now the game chnger, St. Sarah!!

H. Charles   September 8th, 2008 10:31 am ET

I'll be honest with you. Its going to be a close race and McCain is going to walk away with it because most of this country refuses to educate themselves in ways other than commercials and the media and many are masking they're racism by saying that Obama hasn't accomplished anything and has no experience. Those same people voted twice for a man who graduated from college with D avg. The man who they'll vote for this time around supported your D avg president 90% of the time and all of sudden wants to support programs that he shot down for the last 8 years. Even though I'm being pessimistic about this election, I'm still going to vote for the person that treats and speaks to me like an educated human being, not the person that chooses his/her words based on convenience.

Belle   September 8th, 2008 10:31 am ET

CNN Can't report McCain is AHEAD according to Real Clear Politics....they support Barack Obama.

So now MCCain does want change?   September 8th, 2008 10:31 am ET

So now McCain decides he is going to change Washington? He has had 20 years to do it, and has decided to do NOTHING... Evidently...ELECTORAL LIES.

Mike, TX   September 8th, 2008 10:30 am ET

Looks like Obama's going to crash and burn. By November, the American voter would have learned enough about Obama to see that he is offering nothing new and has no experience or idea about what he is doing. By then, the democrats would have begun a "historic ticket" campaign – suggesting that America shouldn't throw away the chance to vote for an African-American and cast the "historic ticket". When you look closely at Obama/Biden, the "historic ticket" arguement is all they have.

The entrance of Palin has offered a historic ticket on the republican side. The difference is that McCain has more experience to bring the needed change to Washington that Obama or Biden; and Palin has more experience that Obama!

I personally could live with an Obama administration if he stood up to the radicals in his own party, but he doesn't. I certainly don't want Pelosi and Reid pulling the strings in Washington through a talking puppet.

McCain / Palin are the only ones who will really change Washington. Obama will change Washington only to the extent that Pelosi and Reid let him, which means no change at all.

Morningstar   September 8th, 2008 10:30 am ET

Let's not forget that Obama is the one who went back on his word with a written agreement regarding campaign funding! Let's see, Obama has done WHAT exactly?.........................yeah that' what I thought. yet you people are too ignorant to look at the proof and real history of each candidate. Obama has been serving himself his entire life. The whole time he has been governor he has been campaigning to become president. yeah we in Illinois thank you for all your work....his constant smooth talking is getting old because there is absolutely no substance. he doesn't have any realistic plans because how could he? it would take some experience in order to know what to do. Maybe in 4 or 8 years MAYBE, but certainly not now,, and NOT when you are running against a candidate with the integrity and knowledge of John McCain.
McCain ran as an independant previously, because he is a non conformist. he has no reason to not do what is right every time. He has never served his own self interest, look at his LONG history prooving that. Palin is awesome, she immediately cut government spending in her own state the second she became governor, that's more than Obama can say.. she's actually been governor for the past 2 years, not merely seeking the presidency for him/herself like Obama.

Where did religion lead the government the past 8 years?

Factcheck.org is run by the Democrats – of course is says she didn't tell Congress to nix it.

Just because Obama and the Democrats set up what looks like a legitimate website doesn't make their statements true.

Tom in Delaware   September 8th, 2008 10:28 am ET

It would be nice if MSM would mention the part of McCain's speech where he said that if a piece of legislation came across his desk had 'earmarks', he would veto it and make it's authors 'Famous'.

That's real change that would truly shake up Washington, but somehow you Media geniuses deemed that 'un-newsworthy.'

Thanks for telling us that Barack thought about joining the military back in 1979 though...that's awesome.

I thought about giving a million dollars to UNICEF back in 1979...so pat me on the back for being "Mr. Charitable."

Obama blinked BIG TIME when he picked "The Scrappy Kid from Scranton" instead of someone who could represent "Change we can beleive in"

McCain doubled-down on 'Maverick' when he picked Sarah Palin.

"Do not ask for Whom the Bell Tolls...it tolls for thee"

Obama is toast.

Steven Brown   September 8th, 2008 10:28 am ET

Funny that CNN talks about how Obama's income tax plan will reduce taxes on families more than McCain's but ignore the effect on job creation, ignore the other tax cuts proposed, and ignore the fact that Obama has already said that he plans to get rid of the tax cuts sometime later on. Way to sorta report the news without bias. And what about the video of Palin in church followed by the statement that she is not an ecumenicist, as if that is a crime. What about mentioning that Palin has taken earmarks, but that Obama has taken far more than she has. Unbiased reporting my @$$.

JJ in Philly, PA   September 8th, 2008 10:28 am ET

Palin is no "original maverick" when she's barely been in office for half a term as governor! I can barely even give the title to McCain without giggling... I feel that the Republicans are trying to jump on Obama's message of change, but not doing a very convincing job.

We just don't care about pork and lobbyist half truths...how about the real issues, GOP??

NoGOP   September 8th, 2008 10:28 am ET

The Repubs are cowtoeing towards Obama's stance on the need for change.
The choice of Palin was a last minute thing to counteract the Biden choice, because Mccain realized Hillary was not a part of the equation.
Don't be fooled, Mccain is only trying to win voted from vulnerable people by making this election about "personality."
I do not think American's should take that risk, especially when it mean 100 more years of war... if our nation lasts that long.

HEY CAPITALIST SUCKERS OF THE COUNTRY,

when the war-profiteers and loan-sharks on wall street make immoral amount of profit and salary for themselves, the profit and the salary are all sacred private properties for them to "legally" own, off limit.

when, and they always do, incur gigantic debt, 300 billion at the least in their own words, in the process of defrauding the people, the debt is for the working people to pay through higher income tax,

while the loan-sharks of the financial industry enjoy further subsidies and tax breaks .

that's CAPITALISM FOR YOU THE SUCKERS.

ENJOY AND EMBRACE YOUR WONDEROUS CAPITALIST SYSTEM,

especcially when your home is repossessed and your loved one's dying from cancer without being able to afford treatment, and

your income tax soars,

in order to pay out the debt left behind by loan-sharks,

who already charged you obscene fees and interests for your mortgage.

And make sure you vote for the same sellouts to send to washington, come november,

because we so deserve what we get!

What is absolutely amazing is that with the dawn of the Information Age, and the easy availability of information thanks to the internet and technology, people still choose willingly to be misinformed, misled, lied to, and deceived. Why is that?

Tony   September 8th, 2008 10:25 am ET

When all is said and done, only the Kool-Aid drinking Obamabots - who almost certainly aren't going to vote anyway, and diehard liberals will be left. The liberal media will refuse to report a lead for McCain in the polls like they did in '04 with Bush/Kerry, so a lot of people are gonna be surprised in November just like they were in November '04. Can you say popular vote majority?

JohnLee   September 8th, 2008 10:25 am ET

Maverick – he's been in the congress for 26 years and it doesn't look like Washington has changed for the better. If that's the poster boy for Maverick, than I guess Hurricane Ike is the poster boy for sunny weather!

All of you who are angry with McCain / Palin are acting like a bunch of school kids crying on the playground. America is obviously forming their thoughts on the candidates and speaking up. 10 point lead in the Gallup Poll for McCain

Rudy NYC   September 8th, 2008 10:24 am ET

"It's not about the issues."

It's about the personalities. The statement brings everything from Camp McCain into focus. They've shown their hole card. Obama has been ridiculed for being a "celebrity" and for drawing large crowds. Were they getting a bit jealous?

Now the GOP has their own pop star to draw big crowds. Now the GOP is trying to pump up the popularity.

"It's not about the issues."

Jan From Boca aton, Fl   September 8th, 2008 10:24 am ET

McCain is a Maverick??? Did you mean to say Flip Flopper?
Palin and McCain make a great team..The blind leading the blind.

Can't wait to see the debate between Biden and Palin,I think Biden
will be the Pitbull minus the lipstick. I'm sure alin will whine he is being sexist no matter what he says. She should go back to Alaska
and have more babies.

PA Independent   September 8th, 2008 10:24 am ET

Lies, lies, and more lies. If Palin is such a "maverick" against earmarks, why did she take the money for the Bridge to Nowhere and spend it on unspecified "Other projects" at a time when Alaska had its own state budget surplus of about $5 billion? It's not like the state needed the money, far from it. Every Alaskan resident, man woman and child, is getting a $1200 "rebate" check from the state government within the next two weeks as their portion of teh state budget surplus from taxes on oil and gas companies.

McCain and Palin have lied to us since day one about Palin's record. More of the same, more of the same, more of the same.

Chi4Obama   September 8th, 2008 10:24 am ET

I don't understand,

Why is being a "Maverick" a good thing. To me all that means is that neither McCain or Palin will be open to listening to advisers. This is just what we need. A "hot head" for both President and VP.

God help us all if we elect these 2 idiots to office.

BTW, since when did McCain all of a sudden become the candidate for "Change" also??

I P   September 8th, 2008 10:24 am ET

Well it looks like McCain-Palin will win. I can't believe that something like that could happen after 8 years of Bush. But then what is in our control anyways??? I wish Americans were more educated to see that there is more than the "Country First" statement alone.

A Democrate from California   September 8th, 2008 10:24 am ET

I've been a democrat for all my life. This election year I am voting for McCain this year for no other reason than he is a better choice over Obama.

Every one is calling each side liars, and in truth they both are. Both sides have exaggerated facts. Both sides accuse each other of flip flopping. It is what politicians do....

The fact of the matter is, McCain is better qualified than Obama is. Maybe in 8-16 years Obama will be ready with more experience. But until he actually performs his duties in the senate and not vote present, I can not vote for him.

Hmm, I wonder why CNN bloggers are overwhelmingly for Obama whereas the country is not. Perhaps media bias has divided the audiences and CNN needs to cater to the Obama ticket a little more since Fox is doing the reverse. Perhaps "independents" who consistently vote democrat make up the staff at CNN. I'm really sick of all of the vicious attacks.

Now that we have an agenda, lets move on with it. Pork barrel spending is why our government is broke now. Cut the politicans out of spending and don't give them a raise until the balance the budget.

Oh darn I forgot Hillary is still sulking out there. And with a $12,000,000 debt just what we need in Washington, a politican who can not handle there own budget let lone the government.

At least McCain/Palin is taking a stand on something instead of talking out of both sides of there mouth and not whining.

McCain/Palin 2008

Serious Discussion   September 8th, 2008 10:22 am ET

What a crock! McCain voted 90% with Bush and that's change? He chooses a "pork-barreler" and a right wing "sepereratist" and that's change? Ask how they differ with Bush–10% and that's change? I'll show you what change is!

On Thursday, after Palin's speech Obama opened his LA regional office an RSVP invite to the opening. I went just because I was curious and a friend went with me. It was called for 6pm to 8pm and we got there at 4:30 out of curiosity. It was interesting that maybe 10 folks were there, no major speakers were announced and by 5pm about 50 people were there. I asked how many people RSVP'd and they said 150. By 6pm there were lines down the block with about 600 people. They had to move it outside to the parking lot and that was not big enough so the alley behind was overcrowded as well. By the time we left at 7:20 there were over 1000 people there with lines still outside all of the press trucks, helicopters and the like. I've never seen such a diverse crowd and never seen the kind of response since the 60's. He raised 10 million that day alone.

These polls do not reflect the youth vote most of whom only have cell phones and no land lines. The polls do not count first time registrants. You will be surprised in the end.

Laura   September 8th, 2008 10:22 am ET

Ah! What's the matter Obamabots...your attack dog turn into a poodle. He now is calling himself an underdog (no pun intended) for the upcoming debate.

Amazing for someone with NO EXPERIENCE they seem to be very distracted and it is showing.

If only Obama's ego had allowed him to put the real attack dog on the ticket. Hillary would have been great! But alas, the DNC didn't want her. You reap what you sow!

Obama=Egomaniac voted 97% of the time with own party. His own VP said he wasn't ready for the job. Hillary thought the same thing. I agree with both Biden and Clinton. Go back to Chicago and grow up!

Mavericks may be but I don't see the title used in a positive manner.

Unfortunately, there are people who do not think for themselves, they allow other people to do it for them. There are people who will rub s*** in people's mouths and tell them it is a sausage. Sad, Sad, Sad!!!

If we pay close attention to some of the rhetoric that is being spouted by some of our leaders, it's all about themselves, those around them and those of their equal. They could CARE LESS about those who are not at their level - it's ME-ISM.

Paula   September 8th, 2008 10:21 am ET

If this ticket wins, the conservative christians just may get their Armageddon.

Speider   September 8th, 2008 10:21 am ET

Perhaps it will take four more years of republican rule to kill the party among Americans? If McCain/Palin do take the election and fulfill their "maverick" image and promises (such as they are), then America will prosper. If they continue our current course, then Americans will be very wary of republican candidates for a long, long time.

Oh, who am I kidding? All a candidate has to do is point a finger and say, "Look! Gay terrorist illegal aliens trying to get married so they can go on welfare" and most Americans will vote that candidate immediately.

"Look! A party that will continue to send our sons and daughters to foreign lands to die for undefinable goals and send our national debt skyrocketing while gas, oil and food climbs even higher." See? No impact at all.

I really wish people would stop saying things like "People aren't stupid," or, "People are smart enough to see through this." People are not interested in seeing through it or making any kind of intelligent evaluation for themselves.

They want to be handed platitudes and easily digested soundbites that reinforce their already-held positions and appeal to the basest emotional responses. God, patriotism, low taxes (more money in my pocket). Once they hear those things, they have their reasons not to vote for the new guy.

It happens every time. People do buy this stuff.

PALIN LIES ABOUT REFORM!!! She is in the pockets of big oil already. In her failed bid to become Lt. Governor in 2002, she accepted $4,500 in contributions from the same fundraising scheme the led to the indictment if Sen. Ted Stevens. The contributions frem executives of VECO Corp., a powerful Alaska oil field services company. Bill Allen admitted his company steered money through special bonuses to its executives that they directed to be donated to favored politicians. An ongoing FBI investigation is still in progress although, Bill Allen has already pleaded guilty to bribery and corruption charges. DO YOU REALLY THINK SHE WILL REFORM WASHINGTON? NOT!!!

The only true Maverick out there is James Garner... Palin is just a sacrificial lamb, that nobody, including the Rebubs and McCain, know anything about.

Looks like the Obamabots are really mad now. Don't know how to respond to McCains brilliant pick of Palin so all they can do is scream "Liar." Same thing thay did to Hillary when she was their idols opponent. Notice how they overlook all the incredible distortions that their idol comes up with? I think they all have their lemming blinders on. I know CNNs poll of polls has them one point apart, but Gallup has McCain up now. Let's be realistic. Hillary has her eyee on the prize in '12 and it would be a lot easier without Obama seeking re-election.
With this in mind, the Clintons will not vigorously attack Palin. They may make some general statements, but the gloves will stay on. Bill and Hill will also drop little "stink bombs" about Obama, all while campaigning FOR him. They're pros this.

Don't be suprised for a Biden-Hillary swap.

Probability of winning equal? Check the electoral map and see it will take a miracle for McCain to win. All Obama has to do is win Penn. and Michigan and it's over. So you can look at your GOP polls all you want, but the real political analyst know McCain is toast. And Obama is only down 4 to McCain in......wait for it, wait for it........Arizona! Wouldn't that be the most humiliating scenario ever?

The republicans are targeting the uneducated Americans in this country much like they did in the past two elections. How do you get the stupid vote- put a card carrying NRA member who looks cute and tell the stupids of America she is just like them. Another Poll shows Obama ahead of McCain the Hotline/FD 09/02 – 09/04 916 RV 40 46 Obama +6.

My bet is that McCains jump or catch up to Obama or even a minor lead will decrease in the weeks ahead .

I checked Real Clear Politics which is one of a few polling sites McCain shows a lead in most of the Polls except this one.

I think McCain/Palin excited the Conservative base during the their convention and the Polling reflects this.

Again understand I believe this is not longterm.

Obama will take off in the Polls during the debates with McCain showing how weak McCain really is.

Biden's debates with Palin will also show how not only she has no experience on Domestic and International affairs but that she comes off like a lets start a war kinda of politican.

So thats my take on all of this.

So it takes a year and some months to get to know Barack Obama, and people still don't trust him.

Yet it takes a week and one speech to know Sarah Palin. And they trust her.

Now, why is that? I think we all know the answer.

America's going to be duped, yet again, into another four years of misery. People are buying it like they did in 2004!

Amazing.

Obama must be crying his eyes out at bedtime. He must really hate himself now. He made a tactical and strategic blunder by not picking Hillary Clinton as his running mate. He allowed his personal hatred, distrust and suspicious of the Clintons to cloud his judgment. He knew or should have known that Hillary was the way – the only way – for him to achieve his presidential ambition. What does Senator Biden bring to the table? Foreign policy expertise. And what does Hillary bring to the table? Domestic and policy expertise, 20 million voters, grit and brilliance, and much more. I am a Democrat, but for this election, I am voting McCain-Palin. In order word, I am a McCain-Democrat!

Are they admitting that they screwed things up the past 8 years? The bad part about it is that they just might get away with this deal. A country that elected Bush twice is not far off from putting the same party that got us into this mess back in power. Some need to see past the pretty glitter of their VP pick and get back down to earth. Sadly though many won't.

R. Cooper   September 8th, 2008 10:14 am ET

Has anyone seen the photos of Palin in a bathing suit made of the american flag and she's toting a shotgun? Have you seen the photo of her in 4 inch heals wearing a leather mini skirt and her blouse buttoned open to her waste looking like a street walker? This is who the GOP thinks we will elect as our next VP? What kind of medication is McCain actually on?

i am affended that women in america are voting on this woman that is simply a beauty queen and nothing more. if women are this stupid and can't see what sarah palin is doing to us then i have to say we are not grown enough to have a woman leader among us yet. palin is dangerous and mccain is riding her skirt for the attention. this is a hollow campaign to say the least. i am just ashamed of the women out there. thank god some of us are secure enough to vote for the real change this nation must have for the sake of our own families and this great nation.
macain is a war hero and nothing else with NO original ideas because he has to copy obamas every speech and palin is a user and will step on anyone that gets in her political way. god help this country if women don't wake up and see how we are being used. we must be the laugh of other countries.we don't need a woman pitbull with lipstick to represent women in our country!!

Sexism in a Bag   September 8th, 2008 10:14 am ET

Ignorance is bliss isnt?, You have one candidate who is the apple of your eye, yet you ignore their shortcomings... you have another who could be but you only pay attention to their short comings... Look at the big picture, not the useless details...

this could be for Mccain or Obama supporters...

stilllooking for a candidate   September 8th, 2008 10:14 am ET

I personally would love to see a Democrat in office any day over a Republican, but the Democrat for the job was snubbed and over looked(HRC) So we are stuck with Obama, whose only qualification for the job is he can give a speech and draw large crowds. I will either not vote or reluctantly vote Repub. in Nov.. At least I know McCain can do the job.

A woman who is extreme in her thinking no abortion no matter the circumstance, no sex education in her state with one of the highest STD rates and a pregant daughter, she is taking the empowerment away from women so please do not tell me she is for women's rights.

She should be interviews and carefully looked at ... she could be the president. John Mccain is already saying what a great leader she is.... does he know something we don't? I thought he was running for the top spot??

I love that one of the Republican biggest talking points is to say check the record. Obama does not have a record to run on, check the record. Then they dont bother to check their own candidates records. If America chooses McCain we truly are the dumbest nation in the world. He says the exact same things as Bush, and people believe him like they believed Bush. How many times are people going to fall for the same trick?

It gives the Obama campaign an opening to run a counter ad to show the Dumbed Down Americans that gave us 8 years of Bush just how much of a phoney Sarah Palin is. Are there still that many racists in this country who would rather watch the further decline of America rather than elect a man who isn't white to office? California Voter   September 8th, 2008 10:10 am ET

It wasn't too long ago I heard people say they were voting for change over experience on the democratic side. Now those same people are saying that Palin isn't experienced enough. And the sexist comments are coming at her just like they did with Hillary Clinton. BTW, Obama repeatedly stated he was a "professor" which was technically not true. All these politicians parse their words to put on the best face possible to get the most most. And many of us are not supporting Obama because he has never explained why he was a member for 20 years where hated and racism was preached - not because Obama is black!

it's up to the voters to choose. this election is trully about the people and i hope you guys have to the judgement to see through that mccaina/palin viagra commercial. vote with your ears open and your eyes close.
OBAMA/BIDEN..........is the right choice for the world.

oldsoldierboy   September 8th, 2008 10:09 am ET

This election is not about the economy. If it was, it would be Obama in a landslide. McCain has voted against laws that would have helped hardworking low income families for decades and now he's asking us to forgive and forget. I haven't forget how I had to work for minimum wage $4.75 back in the 80's & 90's and had to watch people like McCain vote against a minimum wage hike time and time again.

This election is about having a woman in the whitehouse. And this woman is the worst one of them all. Instead of having her underage pregnant daughter focus on getting back to school and getting her education she has her focusing on getting married to her underage boyfriend. Palin also has questionable religious beliefs yet people like her because she's attractive and speaks well which is a shallow minded reason to vote for her.

Obama stay firm, and hit them with a dosh of economics, Iraq war and the cost of that war, and McCain says he is a fiscal conservative, I don't think so.
FANNIE and FREDDIE. Drip the point until the voters, appeal to their instinct of living, remind them that McCain is a hard nose conservative, who will do nothing for our economy, but weaken it more then it is now.. This is the man that voted against the MLK King bill???? Remember! He's no maverick, he is an illusionist and a joke with his travelling sideshow. Who's the celebrity??

JW Mathews   September 8th, 2008 10:09 am ET

Yeah, right and I've got some land for you. Since when does a "maverick" attempt to get a state trooper fired, fibs about selling a government jet on Ebay, gets huge earmarks for her town after hiring a lobbyist. That's just Palin.

Yup, yup, McCain's a great Maverick too. He's been in Washington so long that his campaign is even run by lobbyists. What about the "Keating Five", 7, 8 or 9 houses, Cindy's $300,000 outfit for the RNC, private plane and more. If the McCain family knows about the average American and the trials they face they must have read about it in a book.

Palin, 2006: "People across the nation struggle with the idea of building a bridge because they’ve been under these misperceptions about the bridge and the purpose,” said Palin, who described the link as the Ketchikan area’s potential for expansion and growth. … Palin said Alaska’s congressional delegation worked hard to obtain funding for the bridge as part of a package deal and that she “would not stand in the way of the progress toward that bridge.”

Are they going to bring up her selling the jet on eBay too? This lady is full of lies.

Ken in Dallas   September 8th, 2008 10:06 am ET

The sick thing about this tactic is that earmarks are a bogus issue of Republican invention. It was the Republican Congress that went wild with pork barrel projects, and even at their most excessive, earmarks total around half of one percent of the Federal budget. We spend more on Iraq in two weeks than we spend on an entire year's earmarks.

The Republicans are betting on the American people to be bad at math, and they're likely to win that bet. Look at how many Americans are stupid enough to play the lotteries, count most of them as Republican voters, and be afraid.

Lynn   September 8th, 2008 10:06 am ET

I fear what would happen to the United States if McCain wins. When he ran in the primaries in 2000 against George Bush, he was a better person. He lost and has now surrounded himself with the people that got George Bush elected. He has stolen Obama's entire platform and chosen a woman with a wonderful life story as a gimmick. This guys decision making is SCARY. And the craziest thing about it all...the American people are falling for it. When will Americans wake up and start thinking for themselves. That's the problem Ian. You take their word for it without doing your own independent research. If what he says is what you want to believe then enough said. ive read other posts by you and to me you come off as much more intelligent than that. Its like they are getting more and more bold by the minute. They are going to throw out bigger and bigger lies to see just how much they can get away with.

Bob   September 8th, 2008 10:03 am ET

Wake up folks – all politicians stretch the truth, including Mr Barry Obama. To scream lies, lies, lies does nothing but make yourself look like an idiot. If you can't supply fact and present decently without screaming and name calling, then don't bother with joining the conversation.

Sarah Palin – the new politcal celebrity and media darling. Cult of Personality. That's Ok, America, the actual issues facing us aren't really important anyway, right? John McCain better be careful around her. He's next on her hit list.

irish   September 8th, 2008 10:02 am ET

She has a 80% approval rating among Alaska. Our own Congress has 9% and most of them are democrates, who have done nothing in 2 years, except name post offices and congradulate football teams. Were have they been for the last 5 weeks. On vacation. Who told them they could go on vacation for 5 weeks. I didn't hear any of the American people given the ok for that. And we paid for it. By the way, do you realize that you are comparing Obama and Palin again. I thought one was running for president .I didn't know both were running for the same postion. This is what is going to sink the Obama campaign if you guys are not careful.

Palin will lie too
Just to dupe all of you

Stop this insanity

No How, No Way, No McCain, No Palin

How amusing. I thought all politicians lie, both democrats and republicans alike. Guess democrats believe everything Obama and Biden say? If you do, I'd like to sell you some ocean front property in Colorado. All politicians promise you the moon and then try to convince you that they gave it to you. Go to the congressional records of all 3 senators, look at their voting history, the number of 'not voting' for all 3....Maybe we'd be better off with Putin than any one that's running. At least Palin is farthest removed from Washington rich.

When I think of Palin, all I think of is dictator in the making. She wanted to ban book in Wasilla, she wants abstinence only education taught in schools (yeah that worked for her kid) and she wants to take away a woman's right to choose. If these two get into office, we are so screwed.

For a a large part you can sell the American People whatever you want – as long as they have a chance to buy it, they do. What a joke ... But you know, we deserve the difficulties we are in right now since we elected Bush – TWICE. There comes a time for the end of every empire, and the time is near for the USA. Palin says yes to bridge, then says to stop its building when that becomes politically expedient, but she keeps the money and puts it toward other stuff.

Obama keeps hammering the whole, "these people must think you are stupid thing". But people don't realize that they are. If they could realize how stupid they were, this would have been over.

Obama tells America how it is; people are just too dumb to get it. I guess America deserves the leader they pick...But God I hope it isn't McCain, I mean Palin...Yeah, both would be terrible...

McCain is only leading in the polls because of his convention bounce. Obama had an 8 point lead because of his, so give it a week or two to balance back out when the next 'big' political item hits the news. (Probably the debates)

Just the fact that there is a convention bounce should be scary. People are that gullible that they switch back and forth depending on that next big political news item. Makes you wonder...

If McCain and Palin are such "mavericks" ... or "march to the beat of your own drum," why did they have to glom onto someone else's change message. Not even original enough to think of their own word.

Ian   September 8th, 2008 9:57 am ET

This "maverick" branding makes me want to vomit. Watching the RNC, I must have heard the word maverick 800 times.

Just because you keep repeating that you are something, doesn't make it true in the minds of the educated public. This stuff might work with the conservative base who want to agree with whatever McCain says, but it won't work with independent voters and democrats.

Their policies just don't match up with the image they are selling.

Tim   September 8th, 2008 9:57 am ET

'No thanks' to that bridge? Here are the facts, as reported by CBS News correspondent Wyatt Andrews. Congress killed off the earmark well before Gov. Palin formally abandoned it. And while the bridge is in fact a dead project, the state still kept the money — all $233 million in federal funds. So what did she save the tax payers?

Unbiased Reporting   September 8th, 2008 9:57 am ET

Two different roles, two different responsibilities. As Governor, you get as much as you can for your state. As Vice President, you do the right thing for the American people.

The rabid Left, including by NBC's own admission, this blog, would like to spin everything in their favor – including your haircuts!

Just listen to all of the reporting that starts "The Obama camp doest this.... and THEY do that..." Count the "THEY'S" and you can hear which side of the fence each reporter sits!

Curliss   September 8th, 2008 9:56 am ET

I think everyone who puts comments forth, should do it with decency. For all of you Obama supporters, somehow, you think this man is going to fix all of your problems and handout money on a silver platter to you ... think again. What we need is new direction in washington, and a maverik ticket like McCain and Palin ... will do the trick for most americans. A Obama-Biden sounds like same old politic as usual ... and a return to the Jimmy Carter era. We have more issues to deal with then Obama can even imagine. So, we need a strong international america (McCain) and a strong internal america (Palin) to make things happen.

McCain / Palin – 2008/12

P.S. I think most McCain supporters were brought up by decent parents, and learned to be nice to folk when commenting about issues.

Jenn St Louis   September 8th, 2008 9:56 am ET

I have some questions...

1. Why hasn't Palin spoken to the media sans pre written speeches?

2. Why has the McCain Camp allowed Palin to go one on one with on a media news reporter?

Everyone is on this Palin kick but why hasn't she spoken outside of the speeches that were written for her? I know she's a smart woman.

Are the McCain camp going to let her join the VP debates? That's when we get a real chance to see what everyone's made of without prewritten speeches.

Dave From Philly   September 8th, 2008 9:56 am ET

Maverick or not, Gov. Palin is not ready to be Vice President. If she was, she would have sat down for real interviews with the media about her record and her views.

Sen. Biden did, Sen. McCain did and Sen. Obama did too. If it takes her two weeks to prepare for an interview, then how long would it take her to made a decision on national security issues or any other important issue?

And he has flip flopped on many, many, many other issue. don't believe me check it out for yourself. Go back and listen to his speeches from the primaries.

Billy   September 8th, 2008 9:55 am ET

I wish the public and the media would do their homework on Palin to see just how terrible of a politician she is.

Hey media, why don't you DEMAND Palin do some interviews to answer questions on her record and experience? You are supposed to be the voice of the American people, do your job!

Barbara Gooch   September 8th, 2008 9:55 am ET

I think McCain and Palin are a good mix, I think that America needs these two to make change, after all the Democrates are the ones in congress and they are the ones that has hurt our economy. By the way, is Bill going to tell Obama how to sneak around the White House and cheat on his wife I would like to be a fly on the wall for this one.

Brian   September 8th, 2008 9:54 am ET

How can Palin be an original maverick when she was born in 1987?

Ken in Dallas   September 8th, 2008 9:54 am ET

Palin was for the bridge to nowhere before she was against it, but she's a Republican, and if you question her, you're sexist. Never mind that Wasilla collected $4000/person in earmarks, she's against them for the election, even though she was for them last election.

They look sort of interesting appearing in public together, where Palin does ALL the talking. If they don't get elected, they can take their stand-up act on the road and call themselves Palin and Teller. They might get sued for it, but they're against copyright law now, they can be for it later.

The thing is, the only positions either of them stick to are the ones that pander to the extreme right wrong, er, wing. On issues of national policy, they say what gets them elected, then do what gets them paid. Palin and McCain pander to extremists, then do whatever they want.

g   September 8th, 2008 9:54 am ET

You nobama cultists are in denial if you think your boy is going to win. Latest USAToday/Gallup poll of likely voters: McCain-Palin 54%, Obama-Biden 44%. Cindy- St. Louis   September 8th, 2008 9:53 am ET

No doubt about it: the Republicans are experts at co-opting the Democratic platform. This isn't the first election where they've done it. But let's look beyond this clever tactic: "mavericks" and "change agents" they are not. They are the same intolerant, anti-choice, anti-equal rights for gays, big government, war mongering, reduce-taxes-until-we're bankrupt, ruin-the-environment crowd. It is more of the same – not change.

Its too scary a thought and too sad to think that this country votes that way. Why else was Bush given a second term. We can't let this happen again, this Palin factor is really going to give Obama a run for his money. Can we please make it stop. We can't afford 4 more years. We all know since the basis of the Bush-Mccain-Palin Campagn is lie.
It will be up to the American people cause at the end they will be the one who will suffer. when Mc cain engages another war with Iran, declares a cold war with Russia, confronts the EU and the budget deficit already 400 billion will be over a trillion. And the same time china and india will be receiving our jobs and the housing market crisis will be worsening...
Remember Bush 2004... Election alwasy matters
I think it's ok to reward the republicain party for a job well done..

JusLaugh   September 8th, 2008 9:52 am ET

Calm down, people. This is the way republicans always campaign. They lie, tell half truths and twist every little detail to benefit themselves. The problem is that people fall for it. It just goes to show how dumb the general population is. They will blindly follow without even stopping to think that it's the same puppet-master pulling the strings (Rove) that has ran the country into the ground.

Personally, I don't trust them as far as I can throw them after all of the lies over the last 8 years. I would rather vote Mickey Mouse than let another republican into the whitehouse.

If mccain does get elected, then we deserve what he will do to our country. Don't complain when in 4 more years, we are in wars, poverty stricken, and much more in debt to communist nations.

I see people on here all the time "i voted for bush for the first 2 terms, i wont vote for him again!" Keep it that way, don't be stupid. Republicans have had there 8 years already to show how incompetent they are. Don't give them another 4 to really stick it to us!

McCain has been trying sooo hard to establish his image of being a 'maverick' and now Palin is a 'maverick'?

First of all, I don't see McCain and Palin as mavericks. A 'maverick' is someone being independent in thought and action. Are you kidding me? When has McCain been this? Palin surely isn't independent in thought and action, that's for sure, from day one?

Second of all, what in the heck does pork, a bridge, the drug industry and Palin taking on oil have to do with our economy as a whole? Why are they trying to paint the picture of these non-relative issues are going to help our society?

McCain and Palin are the ticket to Nowhere. McCain can't be in any position to be president when he doesn't even speak for his campaign. And if McCain doesn't speak for his campaign, what makes people think Palin does?

No thanks to McCain and Palin.

Pat huntington NY   September 8th, 2008 9:51 am ET

The ad is full of lies.

Palin is the biggest soliciter for pork barrel spending in her state.

Palin was for the Bridge to Nowhere until she was against it, and yet, still kept the money and spent it elsewhere!

Alaska's economy is 1/3d dependent on Federal Spending there. So it is an outright lie she's opposed pork barrel spending.

And besides, some people's pork is other people's replacement bridge for the one that collapsed over the Mississippi last year!

Obamabots post complete lies like "Palin said she SOLD her plane on Ebay, she lied, we can't elect her"

She said she PUT it on ebay.

I try to post truths, and CNN blocks it. Here are the truths:

Obama Experience:

-8 years as a State Senator where he never authored ONE piece of legilsation
-1 year as a US Senator (after that he started his run for Pres, so he hasn't been working as a Senator) with not ONE piece authored legislation. He did sponsor an ethics bill, that he subsequently VOTED AGAINST
-20 year participation in an anti-white, anti-USA church
-A law degree

So, in effect, NO EXPERIENCE!!!!!!

Lisa M   September 8th, 2008 9:50 am ET

McCain and Palin are Bush followers.
Voted with Bush 90% of the time does not make you a Maverick. It's makes you a party first country second.

BTW how about something original from McCain.
He's now "change"?

Same policiy as Bush does not make you "change". Copying someone else does not make you "change".

Don't say it, prove it/

Check the scores after the first debate, that will give you a better idea of how the polls will go.

Maverick:: unbranded or feral horse and cattle. A feral organism is one that has escaped from domestication and returned, partly or wholly, to its wild state. The introduction of feral animals or plants, like any introduced species, can disrupt ecosystems and may, in some cases, contribute to extinction of indigenous species.

hypocrits   September 8th, 2008 9:50 am ET

The Repubs have once again employed their theory of "if you tell a lie enough times 50% of the population will begin to believe it. I didn't know that when McCain said he would "make politicians who seek earmarks famous" that he meant he would make them famous by selecting them as his VP

Neal   September 8th, 2008 9:50 am ET

Mavericks? Please. Tell me what they've done that's so antiestablishment. I think the Daily Show piece that morphs "Maverick Reformer" into "Reformed Maverick" has it closer. McCain has flip-flopped on so many issues to align himself with the Republican base and the current administration that it isn't funny. Even his VP pick was not his first choice. Palin was chosen to pander to the Republican base and to the PUMAs who want a woman regardless of her politics.

Please be aware of these facts while considering Sarah Palin as a vice presidential candidate, one heart beat away from the presidency of the UNITED STATES.

She is in fact an extreme right winger with these views;

She is against a woman's right to choose even if that woman is raped! Think about your daughter being raped under the PALIN rules. Would you be confortable and happy for your daughter?

She wants to allow creationism to be taught in public schools. Creationism says that the Earth is less than 5000 years old so I guess dinosaurs were on earth while the Great Pyramid and the Sphinx were being built. Does that make sense to you?

She wants no sex education taught in Public Schools She only wants Abstinence taught. How do you think abstinence worked for her 17 year old pregnant daughter? What do you think are the odds of a 17 year old pregnant child getting married and then staying married. Another broken family in the making!

She sought support from the ALASKA Independence Party which wants to secede from the UNION. She actually told them that they were doing a good job!

She actually tried to have books banned from the local library in Wasillo, Alaska when she was Major.

She is against GAY MARRIAGE and any rights for gay people period. What happened to "Do not judge others lese you be judged yourself" Guess that doesn't apply to Gay people, only to people who are like her!

She and John McCain now claim to be the party for change. That of course is after the McCain ad in which he says that he supported George Bush 90 percent of the time. What change can you make when you agreed with George 90 percent of the time. I know! we can change from 90 percent agreement to 100 percent!

To those people who watched the Republican Convention and were swayed by Ms Palin's speech, Please I implore you to actually find out where she stands on the issues before deciding to vote for her and John McCain.

This country has had 8 years of WAR, BAD ECONOMY, HIGHER UNEMPLOYMENT, REDUCED TAXES TO THE RICH. That's enough don't you think.

And by the way WHERE IS OSAMA BIN LADEN??? The person who actually caused the WORLD TRADE CENTER tragedy. He is still alive while thousands of our soldiers (kids) are dead? There is never any talk about him any more from the Republican Right. Wonder why that is? Could it be that they expect you to forget who started this in the first place and no it wasn't IRAQ!

He took on pork barrell except Alaskas highest per capita requests.
How's that drug war going ? She took on big oil for who ? Her state only ? Did she use the money for the future ? Did she use the money in an effort to make Alaska less dependent on oil ? NO !! She said yes to the bridge long before saying no and in fact campaigned on the yes side before no.Good commercial to further proove they lie at any cost and think Americans are stupid enough to believe this load. She took on big oil ,but lost to the community organizers that rallied against her censorship and the librarian that she wanted to fire for not pulling the books Palin wanted out. The organizers and the town of Wissilla won that war ! The librarian won !

Mccain please get real ......your girl is a fraud

While Sarah was Mayor of Wasilla she tried to fire our highly respected City Librarian because the Librarian refused to consider removing from the library some books that Sarah wanted removed. City residents rallied to the defense of the City Librarian and against Palin’s attempt at out-and-out censorship, so Palin backed down and withdrew her termination letter. People who fought her attempt to oust the Librarian are on her enemies list to this day.

Why no big headlines about McCain's HUGE jump in the polls?? He is 10 points ahead! Finally people are seeing through that empty suit Obama and his tired old VP Biden. Biden has been in the senate for 30 years, is that not "more of the same"? The DNC screwed up big time by annointing Obama instead of allowing Clinton to run and crush McCain. I guess this is why we keep losing presidential elections. The DNC needs to be cleaned out completely.

AND SINCE WHEN DID HE BECOME A MAVERICK? These people are funny. After being supported by Lobbyist for all this time McCain now sees that Americans need change. Selling an aircraft at a loss and not for profit does not qualify one to be a vice president. I feel sorry for Americans.

Rachel - California   September 8th, 2008 9:46 am ET

Are they really allowed to blatantly lie like that?? Because let's be honest, she still took that 200+ million in federal aid anyway from that Bridge to Nowhere.

Sue   September 8th, 2008 9:46 am ET

McCain is now leading in the polls, so apparently we ARE stupid enough to believe this!

The GOP is pretty shrewd, they know America is too racist to elect Obama and will play up the lies and fear right to the end. And it's working like a charm!

Better get used to saying 'President McCain' (and eventually 'President Palin').

Debbie   September 8th, 2008 9:46 am ET

Palin is a joke

As Governor, she gave the Legislature no direction and budget guidelines, then made a big grandstand display of line-item vetoing projects, calling them pork. Public outcry and further legislative action restored most of these projects–which had been vetoed simply because she was not aware of their importance–but with the unobservant she had gained a reputation as “anti-pork"

Ian   September 8th, 2008 9:46 am ET

If McCain says that Palin opposed the bridge to nowhere then I'll take his word for it.

tg   September 8th, 2008 9:46 am ET

"He fights pork barrel spending, (he has not shut down the lobbyist)
"She stopped the Bridge to Nowhere. (She supported the bridge)
He took on the drug industry. (No results)
She took on big oil." (why is alaska suffering like the rest of us then)

Observer of polls   September 8th, 2008 9:46 am ET

Check out realclearpolitics.com and intrade.com. It seems that Obama's probability of winning the presidency is now about equal with McCain. What a change of fortunes from last week. McCain appears to be benefitting from a big surge (pun intended).

Palin should scare you   September 8th, 2008 9:45 am ET

Hillary broke through the 'male only' presidential candidates club, so McCain thinks just any ole woman will do for v.p. to get him some votes from women voters. Sarah Palin does brighten up his lackluster slate, but she is more of a 'hockey mom' than national leader. When she cracks those one-liners, I just can't help but see her as nothing more than an appealing stand-up comedian doing her female politician schtick. The thought of her being behind ole geezer McCain, just a heartbeat away from replacing the oldest person to ever run for the office, should scare any rational person.

Mary   September 8th, 2008 9:45 am ET

Palin is like the Emporeror's New Clothes and hopefully we as a nation will realize it before it is too late...but we are a country of lemmings, so I have my doubts. Obama will not stoop to insults or dirty tricks and maybe he won't win because of it....but that is a risk worth taking. The Republicans can have the White House...we have the Congress....so a stalemate for four years sounds okay.

Morals and Values for sale!   September 8th, 2008 9:45 am ET

McCain isn't up 10 points in ANY poll. That was based on LIKELY voters. Which, doesn't take in account first time voters in which Obama has Millions of.

Uncle Sam   September 8th, 2008 9:44 am ET

Now with less than two months to go until the election, the national polls show a close race, despite the built-in advantages which the Democratic nominee enjoys. I believe that Sen. McCain's selection of Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska as his running mate was a stroke of genius and will energize conservatives and inspire working women and small-town Americans.

I fully expect John McCain to emerge victorious in November. I understand that the odds are stacked against him and that his younger, more polished opponent would surely be the safe bet. But I know something about John. Despite what his critics would have you believe, John McCain is not your typical Republican, nor is he your typical politician.

John's unique life experiences have forged his character and have helped him to become the heroic statesman he is. I am betting that, in the days to come, the American people will come to appreciate that fact.

Jen in PA   September 8th, 2008 9:44 am ET

Palin the next Reagan? Wow, joke. Reagan, I'm sure, would be flattered to be compared to the pork barrel queen. Except for their acting experience, that's a totally terrible comparison.

Bob   September 8th, 2008 9:44 am ET

Sure every town they go together SHE is the one who increase your electricity higher...Means that is the only thing she can do... Can not wait the debate, talking about her experience... scholar ship.... etc..etc..etc... More we will learn about her, more the polls will go down with this stupid ticket....

Morals and Values for sale!   September 8th, 2008 9:44 am ET

Lies, Lies, and Lies. However, neither bases care about these things. As we saw in the teen pregnancy issue, which now all of a sudden is above being judged(by the Religious Right because it hurts their poll numbers) and ttruthfully, the only thing that matters is winning.

Morals don't matter to the party who claims Morality(you have an admitted adulterer and the mother of a 17 year old unwed daughter) and values don't matter. It's all about winning.

Obama, you are correct, the American people ARE stupid. So Stupid that they will vote against the candidate that will do the most for them, out of spite.

If you aren't a card carrying Republican, and you say you aren't voting for Obama because of the Issues, You are LYING.
Who is actually the President does not matter, its what they DO that matters.

Anyway, I only wish McCain would have taken on his INFIDELITY as strong as he took on the drug companies or maybe he got mad at them because Cindy got hooked.

Tony   September 8th, 2008 9:43 am ET

What skilled liars the Republicans are.

Seems McCain has pulled ahead of Obama with the post-convention bounce.

The stupidity of teh American people, especially women, NEVER ceases to amaze me.

Ask yourself one question: Depending on who wins in November, should something happen to McCain or Obama, who would you rather have step in as president? Biden or Palin.

Biden with years of experience, exceptional foreign policy experience, having met with many world leaders, or :

Palin, who has NEVER met with one foreign leader, who has NO FOREIGN POLICY experience, who has shady credentials, and who we virtually know nothing about?

You choose. Just think of your families, friends, communities and the country before you pull that lever.

Alan   September 8th, 2008 9:43 am ET

She campaigned “as a private citizen” against a state initiaitive that would have either a) protected salmon streams from pollution from mines, or b) tied up in the courts all mining in the state (depending on who you listen to). She has pushed the State’s lawsuit against the Dept. of the Interior’s decision to list polar bears as threatened species.
