Obama campaign calls McCain ad a 'lie'

New McCain television ad claims Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin stopped the “Bridge to Nowhere”.

(CNN) – The presidential campaigns of Barack Obama and John McCain are sparring over a new television ad claiming Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin stopped the “Bridge to Nowhere” - the infamous $400 million congressional earmark that became the ultimate symbol of excessive pork-barrel spending.

Watch: The McCain campaigns latest ad, 'The Original Mavericks'

The new McCain ad, set to air in key states, calls both the Arizona senator and Palin "original mavericks," and characterizes the Alaska governor as an ardent opponent of the 2005 bridge proposal championed by Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens connecting Ketchikan, Alaska to the Ketchikan airport on Gravina Island (Population: 50).

Several opponents of Palin, as well as the non-partisan factcheck.org, have noted the claim she was against the bridge is not entirely accurate - the Alaska governor was for the bridge during her 2006 gubernatorial bid, and did not begin opposing it until it became clear the project was doomed on Capitol Hill.

Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton went even further Monday, calling the assertion a flat out "lie."

“Despite being discredited over and over again by numerous news organizations, the McCain campaign continues to repeat the lie that Sarah Palin stopped the Bridge to Nowhere," Burton said. "McCain and Palin will say or do anything to make people believe that they will change something besides the person sitting in the Oval Office."

But McCain spokesman Brian Rogers is standing by the claim, and said the Obama campaign is launching "hysterical attacks."

“The only people ‘lying’ about spending are the Obama campaign," Rogers said. "The only explanation for their hysterical attacks is that they’re afraid that when John McCain and Sarah Palin are in the White House, Barack Obama’s nearly $1 billion in earmark spending will stop dead in its tracks."

Rogers also provided several press clips noting Palin became a critic of the bridge in her early days as governor of Alaska.

UPDATE: The McCain campaign says the Alaska Democratic Party has removed a Web page that credited Palin for killing the Bridge to Nowhere project.

"National Democrats apparently want to rewrite history and say that Palin did not kill the Bridge to Nowhere," the McCain campaign's Michael Goldfarb said.

    Palin is a lie. She wrecked Wasilla the way the G.O.P. wrecked the rest of the country.

    Straight out od the G.O.P. Gulag known as Alaska.

    Shame on us for even considering this awful hoax. Send her back.

    i have a question– if palin is so against pork barrel spending, i presume that she has not accepted very much money for alaska through this mechanism. so how much pork barrel money has alaska received say in 2007 (her first full year as governor), and what does that average per-capita? also i had heard that she still kept the bridge to nowhere money and used it elsewhere, is this true?

    This is a bit worse than a simple lie. She claims to have opposed the bridge to nowhere (in fact she supported it), but Alaska KEPT THE EARMARK MONEY FOR THE BRIDGE.

    If she wanted to say "thanks but no thanks" for the bridge, why did Alaska not send back the millions in earmarks that we gave them for the bridge?

    "Thanks but no thanks, and here is your earmark check back" would have been much more convincing.

    Country First. Really!
    Then why did McCain and Republicans lie to American people and took advantage of 9/11 to invade Iraq? Was it 'Country First'?

    Average Americans don't believe that the Earth was created 7000 years ago;
    We don't ignore overwhelming scientific proof about global warming;
    We don't support Jews For Jesus;
    We don't support states seceding from the country;
    We don't support eminent domain;
    We don't support banning books;
    We don't support using political power for personal gain (Troopergate);
    We do support abortion in the case of rape or incest;
    We do support sexual education that deals with pre-marital sex, STDs and contraceptives

    Palin should not be allowed anywhere near the White House!
    She is an extreme religious fundalmentalist.
    She lied about a major corruption foe (she accepted campaign contributions in the same fundraising scheme at the center of a public corruption scandal that led to the indictment of Sen. Ted Stevens).
    She lied about being against earmarking (she requested $27 Million for tiny Wasilla – even McCain criticized her).
    She lied about her initial support for the Bridge to Nowhere (only reversing her opinion when it became politicially beneficial to do so).
    She does not support alternate energy sources.
    She is anti-environmental.
    She even lied about winning Miss Congeniality!

    Extreme is an understatement.

    So you really want a "Warrior For God" one heartbeat away from our nuclear arsenal? I thought unstable, belligerent religious extremists were our enemies...not our representatives.

    HIs whole campaign is a lie. If he's so capable of making changes, why hasn't he done it in his 26 years in Washington? People better start educating themselves and quit making their decisions from talking points. Do you McCain supporters realize he wants to tax health care benefits? That's right, if you get health insurance from your employer, he wants you to pay taxes on that as if it's income. Wake up people!!

    I am sick of hearing the last eight years from the liberals. Maybe I am in the minority, but I make twice as much money as I did eight years ago, the U.S. has not had another 9/11 attack on our home soil, and I have a choice in healthcare. I don't have to wait on the government to tell me which Dr. to see and when I can see him. All the Dems are saying is change, change, change. I certainly don't want more taxes, which Dems would push, and I don't want socialized medine or bigger government.

    Oh, and the pipeline that she oushed through...yeah, research shows if it ever move forward...it won't be until 2020.

    In the new poll conducted from Friday to Sunday, McCain leads Obama 54-44 percent among likely voters. The survey of 1,022 adults, including 959 registered voters, has a margin of error of 3 points.

    Sadly, this is more of the desperate attacks from the Obama campaign. This whole things goes much deeper than a bridge. This is an indication that the Obama campaign is now on defense according to Willie Brown. People are asking questions about who Obama is, and they don't like what they are hearing. So, the Obama campaign is trying to change the message about a bridge in Alaska. So what if Palin supported the idea of a bridge, she pulled the plug when she saw it was a waste of taxpayer money. She invoke the power of states rights! It is apparent that McCain-Palin are growing in the battle ground states and that by election day, this race will be a lopsided victory for John McCain and Sarah Palin.

    Sarah Palin better do her homework before she starts out on her own campaign trail. She will probably fade as fast as she rose.

    Let's hope.

    The only lying that has occurred is by the sadistic Liberals. There have been over 70 lies perpetuated by liberals about Sarah Palin that have been PROVEN to be blatant lies. The Dems are so afraid of this woman they do not know what else to do. Obama was AGAINST the surge in Iraq before he was for it. Does that make him a liar? LAME ATTEMPT

    I find it amazing the News attacked Michelle Obama and now letting Todd Palin off the hook of being unpatriotic.
    The media is making a star of of Palin when the truth is, She is dirty!
    Bridge to nowhere she lies...
    She abuses power!
    She takes credit for things she has NO credit and or not suceeded as of yet.
    McCain, stands like the puppet he is letting her do all the talking.
    I find it funny Palin asked for ear marks but, can have no property tax, No state tax and give money back to the residence? Sounds like ask for earmarks and give our money to the residents of Alaska cheating the rest of the USA.
