Obama campaign calls McCain ad a 'lie'

New McCain television ad claims Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin stopped the “Bridge to Nowhere”.

(CNN) – The presidential campaigns of Barack Obama and John McCain are sparring over a new television ad claiming Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin stopped the “Bridge to Nowhere” - the infamous $400 million congressional earmark that became the ultimate symbol of excessive pork-barrel spending.

Watch: The McCain campaigns latest ad, 'The Original Mavericks'

The new McCain ad, set to air in key states, calls both the Arizona senator and Palin "original mavericks," and characterizes the Alaska governor as an ardent opponent of the 2005 bridge proposal championed by Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens connecting Ketchikan, Alaska to the Ketchikan airport on Gravina Island (Population: 50).

Several opponents of Palin, as well as the non-partisan factcheck.org, have noted the claim she was against the bridge is not entirely accurate - the Alaska governor was for the bridge during her 2006 gubernatorial bid, and did not begin opposing it until it became clear the project was doomed on Capitol Hill.

Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton went even further Monday, calling the assertion a flat out "lie."

“Despite being discredited over and over again by numerous news organizations, the McCain campaign continues to repeat the lie that Sarah Palin stopped the Bridge to Nowhere," Burton said. "McCain and Palin will say or do anything to make people believe that they will change something besides the person sitting in the Oval Office."

But McCain spokesman Brian Rogers is standing by the claim, and said the Obama campaign is launching "hysterical attacks."

“The only people ‘lying’ about spending are the Obama campaign," Rogers said. "The only explanation for their hysterical attacks is that they’re afraid that when John McCain and Sarah Palin are in the White House, Barack Obama’s nearly $1 billion in earmark spending will stop dead in its tracks."

Rogers also provided several press clips noting Palin became a critic of the bridge in her early days as governor of Alaska.

UPDATE: The McCain campaign says the Alaska Democratic Party has removed a Web page that credited Palin for killing the Bridge to Nowhere project.

"National Democrats apparently want to rewrite history and say that Palin did not kill the Bridge to Nowhere," the McCain campaign's Michael Goldfarb said.

Governor Palin was a primary factor in eliminating the wasteful spending for "the bridge to nowhere". Please quit trying to make her out to be someone she is not because of your fear. We in Alaska know what she has done and who is really lying.

Palin yesterday said that Freddie Mac and Fannie May have "gotten too big and too expensive to the taxpayers." You would think a Vice Presidential candidate would know that these are private companies. Does she know anything about the economy?

So explain this to me (I heard this on TV)

I need to vote Republican because the Republicans running for office now are the only ones that can fix the mess that the Republicans in office now made.

Mike Huckabee couldn't answer this. Although I'm undecided, it kind of makes me wonder if I want more of the same?

Like Goebbels said if you repeat a lie often enough people will believe it's true.

Hey OBots, whatever happened to "OBama reviewed the situation and thought about it and then made OMG the best decision Eva" .....its the same situation, she supported it, then realized that it was not worth the money and then opposed it! How is this any different from O' changing his stance after "review".

    You OBots are funny!

Can you imagine a world where President John McCain heaven forbid has a health issue and Palin the well known experienced leader has to step in for him.
Her frame of reference for everything would be "But in Alaska..."

I am not a genius America but I am smart enough to know that GW was not the best choice for America. And Palin has even less global experience and even less United States experience than GW.

    Vote Smart in 08!
Don't let the world saying around the world be "Fool me once shame on You, Fool me Twice shame on Me, Fool me three times I must be an American"

If Alaska is taking their ad that said she opposed the Road to Nowhere off the air, they apparently don't want to look like fools.

Palin (the lady with the Rosanne Barr voice)

This has nothing to do with the ad, but many bloggers are calling this the Palin-McCain ticket, so this morning there are surrogates making sure that we know that McCain is calling the shots. I find this extremely funny – must be a little uncertainty as to who is the more appealing person – "The I will use her to help me, but if she gets too big, I will have to cut her back fear."

The reason this makes me chuckle is because I never saw him as a strong leader anyway. And a lady with barely any experience at all can look more presidential than he does??????

CARIBOU BARBIE should go on an open ended talk show and just answer this question. I would like to hear what she has to say. Was she open to the idea before she was against it?

I agree with you Mile-High, just shows the Audacity of Hope being displayed from Obama supporters, and i'm a black male. The agent of change receives a VP who's been a part of Washington establishment 10 years longer than McCain.
    Vote McCain

A mother with no morals, no values, and one willing to use her children, from youngest to oldest to further her own political career.....

A woman who will allow herself to be used by the men and women of her party to acheived their agenda....

A very poor example of a human being.

Obama and Biden you better go after McCain and Palin, forget that Palin is a woman and take her on. Make sure she explains exactly what executive experience as Governor qualifies her to occupy the White House.

Tell her to go hunting in Alaska for her moose burgers and be sure to give the moose a gun so that the hunt will be fair.

    Moose against Palin...................

I welcome the look into Palin's conservative religious background – maybe a closer look into Obama's religious background will be revisited. I'll take an evangelical background over a liberal, black liberation background anyday!!

This is not the first lie they have told. There are numerous ones. She said she put the government jet on sold it on ebay. Then John Mccain said that. LIE She was a member of the penocostal church a very ratical church until she ran for office. There are tapes of her preaching you need to look at that on utube. It will scare you. Women should take a long look at her and Mccain before they vote for them. He has said he will appoint very conservative judges. That will over turn roe v wade. There are two that are ready to retire and that would give the conservatives the votes needed to do so.

Before you vote be sure what you are voting for it is our children and grandchildrens world we are talking about.

The bridge was killed but Alaska still kept the money. Alaska is one of the top ten states for receiving for federal funds – with one of the smallest populations.

John McCain is not the man of yesteryear – he is no longer a maverick and he no longer has the integrity he once had. He will lie, lie, lie to get what he wants, which is the oval office. This is putting America first? I think not. Where is the John McCain of 2000? Unfortunately, integrity is not a part-time or sometime thing, you either have it or you don't and it is apparent from all the lies that are coming out of the McCain/Palin campaign, that he no longer has it and his VP pick fits the campaign perfectly, as she will open her mouth and whatever is expedient will come pouring forth.

The polls are completely misleading. Excluded from the sample are those with only a cell phone-anyone under 25. If you include the young who see their future mortgaged to pay for the war and tax cuts and a party that believes that "Drill Now" answers our energy challenges, you will see Obama carried into office.

Sounds like the Democrats are running scared and will find anything to get some attention since they haven't had any since Palin came onboard. They need to accept the facts that they are going down in November.
