Obama campaign calls McCain ad a 'lie'

New McCain television ad claims Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin stopped the “Bridge to Nowhere”.

(CNN) – The presidential campaigns of Barack Obama and John McCain are sparring over a new television ad claiming Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin stopped the “Bridge to Nowhere” - the infamous $400 million congressional earmark that became the ultimate symbol of excessive pork-barrel spending.

Watch: The McCain campaigns latest ad, 'The Original Mavericks'

The new McCain ad, set to air in key states, calls both the Arizona senator and Palin "original mavericks," and characterizes the Alaska governor as an ardent opponent of the 2005 bridge proposal championed by Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens connecting Ketchikan, Alaska to the Ketchikan airport on Gravina Island (Population: 50).

Several opponents of Palin, as well as the non-partisan factcheck.org, have noted the claim she was against the bridge is not entirely accurate - the Alaska governor was for the bridge during her 2006 gubernatorial bid, and did not begin opposing it until it became clear the project was doomed on Capitol Hill.

Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton went even further Monday, calling the assertion a flat out "lie."

“Despite being discredited over and over again by numerous news organizations, the McCain campaign continues to repeat the lie that Sarah Palin stopped the Bridge to Nowhere," Burton said. "McCain and Palin will say or do anything to make people believe that they will change something besides the person sitting in the Oval Office."

But McCain spokesman Brian Rogers is standing by the claim, and said the Obama campaign is launching "hysterical attacks."

“The only people ‘lying’ about spending are the Obama campaign," Rogers said. "The only explanation for their hysterical attacks is that they’re afraid that when John McCain and Sarah Palin are in the White House, Barack Obama’s nearly $1 billion in earmark spending will stop dead in its tracks."

Rogers also provided several press clips noting Palin became a critic of the bridge in her early days as governor of Alaska.

UPDATE: The McCain campaign says the Alaska Democratic Party has removed a Web page that credited Palin for killing the Bridge to Nowhere project.

"National Democrats apparently want to rewrite history and say that Palin did not kill the Bridge to Nowhere," the McCain campaign's Michael Goldfarb said.

How could anyone trust the Republicans to do the right thing at any time, be honest, honorable, ethical, moral or right?

Please don't tell me we're doomed to repeat the past......... so soon?

Prejudice, bigotry, insensitivity and a refusal to embrace the truth all the time, not just when someone's looking, sums up the Republican party in a nutshell.

    Already cracked byond repair.

    Go away now.

Of course it's a lie. The entire image that the GOP is trying to sell of this woman is a lie.

And they'll probably get away with it, too, since there are only 55-60 more days for the public to get information on this unknown's record. It's just not enough time to research her, then spread the news to discredit the lies that they're telling. Especially when she won't do interviews and the McCain campaign cries "Sexism!" or "That's off limits!" when she and her qualifications are justly questioned.

The Democrats are so scared. Obama is way down in the polls and people are starting to see right though his fancy speeches.

Great job Obama in picking a running mate. Your selection truly shows your lack of judgment.

Not only did Palin not oppose the Bridge but when it was doomed, she still got the millions and used in other ways in Alaska.
She is not much of a Christian woman if she can't tell the truth because it will somehow diminish her few accomplishments as
Governor. I thought her speech at the convention was nothing more
than insults and sarcastic remarks. No substance, none.
I would like to vote for a woman, but not this one.
McCain can't win on his own, Obama can.

This is how it works with Republicans. They lie and lie and lie and nobody cares. People have double standards for Obama and McCain. It is out of peoples imagination that a war hero ever can lie !

Even with all the lies, Americans still are siding with them. How disappointing. I will stay true to my beliefs and vote for Obama and Biden, the only agents of change. The McCain/Palin supporters don't even know who she is and so many things keep surfacing and that is scary.
Eight is definitely enough (too much) and No Way, No How, No McCain and NO PALIN!!

So, what she campaigned on before she was elected was different than what she did after she was elected.

And, I'm suppose to believe anything she says she'll do now before the election in November? "Original Maverick" my foot.

It's so funny. I've followed this race for almost a year now and these blogs as well.

I've come to the conclusion that I've seen all of these blog attacks before from Obama's camp. But instead of Palin's name I saw Hillary Clinton's name.

    Way to go Dems.

I am so sick of this lame response from the McCain team about earmarks. Illinois has a few more residents than Alaska. Per capita Palin has requested more than seven times as much in earmarks than Obama and the most of any state in the nation. SEVEN TIMES. It's about time to call a lie a lie.

Today she made a huge economic bluster–she just indicated that she thought Fannie and Freddie were government entities.

She knows less about economics than Mc Cain.

She's also proposed a tax on food in Alaska.

So much for food and shelter under the GOP...

    That's absolutely right, PGB.

Republican tactic: Caught lying, change the subject, blame the Democrats and the media, accuse them of being intellectual snob elites, etc. etc., never answer the question, never answer the question, never.

Sad thing is it works, because the media won't call them on it.

When they do call them on this type of behavior, Republicans throw a fit–"how dare you expose me for what I am, a liar?" See, e.g., McCain cancelling Larry King appearance when Campbell Brown called out his spokesperson Tucker Bounds for lying about Palin's experience with the Alaska National Guard. But only McClatchy reported THE FACT that Palin has NEVER issued a SINGLE order to the guard.

It's the media's job to report facts. It is a FACT that the claim made in this new McCain-Palin ad is false.
