COLUMBIA, Missouri (CNN) – Joe Biden suggested Tuesday that advocates for people with disabilities should “support stem cell research” — a remark that follows repeated pledges from Republican VP nominee Sarah Palin, the mother of a baby with Down Syndrome, to parents of children with disabilities that she would be “a friend and advocate in the White House.”

When asked about the issue at a Tuesday rally, Biden did not mention Palin’s name, but seemed to direct a question to her.

“I hear all this talk about how the Republicans are going to work in dealing with parents who have both the joy…and the difficulty of raising a child who has a developmental disability, who were born with a birth defect,” he said. “Well, guess what folks? If you care about it, why don't you support stem cell research?”

Related: McCain camp says Biden 'sunk to a new low'

Biden told voters “the disability issue is not a new issue for us” and said he and Barack Obama would support stem cell research — a political hot potato that Sarah Palin does not support because it involves the use of human embryos.

In an illustration over the controversy of stem cell research — a key issue for some conservative voters — the Republican ticket is split. John McCain supports the practice.

Palin did not cut funding for special needs education in Alaska by 62 percent. She didn’t cut it at all. In fact, she tripled per-pupil funding over just three years.

Jerry in Boston   September 9th, 2008 2:40 pm ET

The McCain-Palin campaign is an absoute disgrace. Using her son as a shield against a perfectly fair and crucial question….

Do you support Stem Cell research in the fight against many medical conditions, including Down Syndrome?

That is a perfectly fair and salient question, but of course Sarah Palin isn't allowed to be asked questions, is she?

Palin was clearly pandering at the convention and since when she stated she would be an advocate for children with disabilities. The proof that she's not being truthful is that she CUT the Alaska State funding by 62% for the very same people she now claims to advocate for.
Sorry, Sarah, you can't have it both ways.

typical response from the republicans. They dont care about others, only serving themselves and feel since Palin does not support it with her own disabled child its not a matter to be discussed and in fact its offensive according to them.
Lets see, we are unable to question Palins qualifications, the media is not permitted to ask her tough questions, we are not allowed to discuss her evangelical extremism, and now they add stem cell to the list.
Note to republicans….just what is it we are allowed to discuss that you wont be offended.
NEWSFLASH TO PALIN….stem cell research is about others who need it and could benefit from it. Its not just about your kid.

Why can't we have both? If we tax the religous entities, which we should, since they are so political and, unfortunately, are shaping our political outcome anyway, and with the proceeds build them a monument, so they can go there and pray until God heals them.
And for the rest of us, we continune the stem cell research, with stem cells taken from us the "unfaithful". That way we are not stealing their souls. That way we both can have our way.
I'm not willing to carry a child of someone who deliberately chooses to bring a vegetable, called a human, into this world. If God loves them then let him take care of them.

Are we going to say that any issue which affects a candidate or their family is off limits?

By that argument Iraq is off limits because Biden and Pali both have kids going there.

Disability advocate   September 9th, 2008 2:37 pm ET

The best part is the republicans continually cut programs and services to help children with disabilities and thier families and then call them "special needs children", as though their only label the need is "special needs"…how about a little action and support for families and children and a little less talk about how dedicated they are to this population just because Ms. Palin has a child with Down Syndrome.

The McCain Health Care "plan" would completely bankrupt all of these families.

HTA, Chicago, IL   September 9th, 2008 2:36 pm ET

To me, it's hard to argue that an embryo, the potential to create life, shouldn't be used to help someone that is already alive. If you think an embryo has the same value as person walking among us, then fine, don't support embryonic stem cell research. If you think an embryo is worth less than a person alive today, you should back stem cell research with all you've got.

McCain and Palin are just more of the same. Where's the Maverick in them on this issue?

Paula   September 9th, 2008 2:36 pm ET

For someone who claims she'll be an advocate for special needs kids, it's too bad Governor Palin has neither the guts nor moral fortitude to tell the American public that she cut funding for special needs kids approximately 60% in one year.

No Palin Pitbull Lips,

The embryos that are to be used are ones that are stored in In Vitro Fertilization clinics that are targetted to be burned.

So the choice becomes, do you do nothing and let the embryos burn and 'die'. Or do you use the embryos to search for cures that could affect millions of people?

WASHINGTON – Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has charged her state a daily allowance, normally used for official travel, for more than 300 nights spent at her home, The Washington Post reported Tuesday.

More to come.

PALIN THE OVARY COP   September 9th, 2008 2:35 pm ET

I just saw on MSNBC where a commentator asked a Republican spokeswoman at the RNC about with the planned reduction in the RNC how were the Republicans going to introduce Palin to the American people. Her response was blah, blah, blah "she has been very well received by the base" blah, blah, blah, "we know she will not be ready to step in within the next month, 6 months or a year". SAY WHAT!!! One person admits she is not prepared to be President, but she was still chosen to run on a ticket with a 72 year old man with health issues???? Does the Republican rabid Right have no shame???

So, this woman was selected because:

1) She possesses good conservative values which energizes the rabid Right.

2) To appeal to suburban mothers.

I am still trying to get my head around this statement. The Republican party will select a nominee, any nominee, that they know is not qualified to run the country but to energize the base!!!

So, to recap:

1) Energizing the Republican party base is priority one

2) The health and safety of 300 million U.S. citizens is priority 2???

How exactly does that play into McCrypt and Crew's "Country First" slogan?? Help me, anybody to answer that question.

This line of logic would be laughable were it not so very, very chilling.

My question to all you targeted suburban mothers, are you willing to risk the chance of putting the security and safety of your own kids in the hands of an individual, any individual whose day job is on the job training to be the President of the largest country in the Free World?

Since I have no children it is of no concern to me, but please, think about the possible consequences very, very, very seriously before pulling that lever on November 4th.

Annie   September 9th, 2008 2:35 pm ET

Using this as a refernce is a disgusting attack. And perhaps both his and Obama worshippers could stop spreading the lies about her cutting funds by 62% for special needs children. That is untrue and has been proven by Fact Check.org throug hdiscussions with Alaskan education officals that she has practically tripled the budget for special needs children.

Once again.. I still say that people that are pro-life are not really pro-life.. they are only pro-birth.

I do not mind strong religious convictions. But seeing Palin stand in front of her church and say the Iraq war is God's plan. Her Pastor standing next to her yelling that Alaska is a special place that God will spare in a soon to come world destruction. Then they both stand on stage and watch a church video that shows the world being blown up except for Alaska. Can we say, Doomsday Cult? What is the difference between David Koresh and Sarah Palin? He said the Republicans, not just Palin. And as many people have said before, you can support OTHER types of stem cell research; a lot of very conservative people don't support any type. OMG he never said anything about her child or anything having to do the down syndrome, but thanks for grasping at straws, seems to be the McCain's camp way of doing things. Oh but never mind they mock Obama's choice to be a community organizer, or his faith, his patriotism, his wife… but he and Biden are never supposed to say anything in response because then he's being too negative? So if he doesn't attack but does defend himself, he's playing politics as usual? How about not letting people think that they can get away with lying?

Biden could've talked about the fact that she cut funding for Special Needs children, but he left that alone. He could've said a lot of things about Palin, but he hasn't and neither has Obama. Its ironic that he goes out and gives these speeches and everyone calls him an empty suit. Palin does the same thing and she's a maverick. wow. Only in America.

Obama-Junkie, IL   September 9th, 2008 2:32 pm ET

That's fellow bloggers, get the truth out. Stop believing what Palin and McCain say without digging into their votes, policies and positions. When Palin made a plea for support of parents with children with disabilities, what is she purposing she would do? What is her record on the issue?

Unfortunately, it is very sad to see many Palin supporters defend her without even knowing Palin's public positions.

Mike Cobb, Palo Alto, CA   September 9th, 2008 2:32 pm ET

Yet another example of the negative campaigning of McCain/Palin. Stem Cell research and why it is important is a very appropriate ISSUE to be on the table … it is one of the many things where Bush 43 has, in my view, hurt the American people. This is just one example of too many where the McCain/Palin people want to make everything about personality and avoid the substantive policy questions that should be the basis for voters' decisions. It is up to the media to keep the focus on ISSUES and POLICIES, and not reward negative attacks by giving them traction.

IAMWMD   September 9th, 2008 2:32 pm ET

Carl Rove really outdone himself by advising McBush to select Palin. She's nothing more than Rove on female hormones and is trying to turn the election to a beauty pagent. Not gonna work after the October surprise that's waiting.

It's great for her to get in front of her crowd and lie because it's gonna bite her in the a## sooner than later.

Palin is not my primary concern. It's the all out effort that's already began on the part of the repugs to suppress and prevent the Democratic votes from being accurately counted again.

Stop foaming at the mouth folks. Biden used an example, he did not mention Palin by name. Are we at the point that if Obama or Biden say the word "woman", McCain's stormtroopers will shout "SEXISM!!!"

Biden is a smart guy. He has brought up a relevant issue and he presented an intelligent argument. Try to get that from the other side.

And he does not say disabled people should not exist. What he says is….if we have the means to remove that burden from their lives why shouldn't we? Stem cells could be used to cure cancer, heart disease, MS, etc. Does Biden want to get rid of all people with those diseases?

I support stem cell research for I support any help to mankind when there is need as a consequence of disease. Our Lord gave us intelligence so that we could help others. I must say that as a woman and a Latino I strongly support Barack Obama. I have supported him and now also Biden. Obama is not just any man. He is the American dream, working to help others any way he could. He could have taken the easy road as a lawyer because of his high intelligence and lived the high life with plenty of money, yet he chose to work in Chicago as a community organizer. Obama has the strength, faith, fortitude, intelligence, and charisma of many persons before him who sacrificed for the United States of America like John Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Edward kennedy…
I live in Puerto Rico and even though I am a US citizen I cannot vote for the President because we are not a state. I am asking other Latinos and US citizens to open up your hearts and vote for Obama. He will not let you down and he will help the economy and bring your sons or daughters back from a needless war. We need to unite in prayer for all Americans so that the next years will bring peace and stability to the United States. There is much to do, lets get together and do it!

As the parent of a special needs child (fragile x syndrome) medical research is extremely important -including stem cell work. (Kirsten – Many of those other cells have shown horrible side effects in studies). And praying for our children is not enough.

We need:

Research

Supporting full funding and enforcement of IDEA in schools

Support savings accounts for special needs children which don't effect their medicaid benefits

Jobs for those over age 21

Respect

No pandering

No sideshows at conventions

jim, kansas city   September 9th, 2008 2:28 pm ET

As a catholic, I can not see how Biden can support embryonic stem cell research. Being pregnant, giving birth it is a miracle on itself, from the moment of conception.
When it comes to faith Biden, put your money where your mouth is. You know very well the stand of Catholic Church on embroyonic stem cell research, you personally are talking as VP democratic nominee not as a catholic in this issue.
Also I want to add one more thing, we had a discussion last night with my wife. She is democrat, I am republican, go figure.
She has a MBA in accounting and finance, and takes a lot of offense when all media treat abortion as most important subject to females on this election. I mean really what are media here trying to say?
As for comment on Palin's baby, it does not even deserve a response, that is very very low. I think Obama should distance himself from this comment or it is going to backfire. I can not even imagine that something like this would come out of Bidens mouth, actually I guess I can, but gally this is not giong to turn out good.

Amazing, you'll protest and say how wrong it is that Americans are WILLINGLY fighting for our country, defending what's right, and unfortunately dying (doing so with honor), yet you are totally for, and even cheering, a woman's right to KILL a defenseless child simply because she doesn't want to be burdened?? By your logic, if we put Bush on trial for war crimes we should also put pro-choicers, abortion doctors, etc. on trial for genocide.

And for all of you who are rambling about a 'senseless war', if Gore and/or Kerry were President we would've already had something happen that would have made 9/11 look like a small scuffle.

YOU WANT THE FACTS – HERE ARE THE FACTS – OBAMA/BIDEN = NO NATIONAL SECURITY, DIMINISHED HEALTH CARE, MORE UNEMPLOYMENT, MORE DEATHS OF DEFENSELSS CHILDREN.

Noel   September 9th, 2008 2:21 pm ET

Joe Biden, expert on all.
Wouldn't that be nice to say, seeing how he has thoughts on everything and anything political, regardless of his expertise. It's truly a shame that our political system allows this type of garbage to continue year after year. Let's do term limits and get these lifetime politicians out in the labor market. Give them the same benefits that others get for putting in two or six years in a profession or job. Have them stop milking the public teat. Joe Biden shouldn't have any problems getting a job if he had term limits, would he? But, then again, all of the members of Congress, without additional influence, might be hard pressed to find a job where influence isn't a necessity.

Mark, PA   September 9th, 2008 2:21 pm ET

Repubican low income conservatives are the dumbest people in America. They will vote against their own economic interest just to keep the White party alive. Their end is drawing near. It's about time minorities in this country have a voice. And the Democrats are an example of diversity. The Repubicans are only trying to act diverse, by adding a woman with no credentials. It will not work this time.

K2   September 9th, 2008 2:21 pm ET

Too bad the back room deal with Howard Dean has left Obama dragging this fat tire Biden along in exchange for getting the nod over Clinton. Dean got to unseat the Clintons as the democratic power broker, Obama got their nod over Clinton, and America gets a Democratic ticket that is quickly falling into the trash can. Thanks Howard Dean!

Just Wondering   September 9th, 2008 2:20 pm ET

I'd like for Obama and Biden to explain their hypocrisy in attacking Palin over the Bridge To Nowhere when they both voted in favor of it. And I would like them to explain why they voted against an amendment that would have redirected the money from the BTN to the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Ashley   September 9th, 2008 2:20 pm ET

I think it's the lack of supporting stem-cell research by right-wing Republicans that explains why McCain/Palin are on the tickets.

Can someone please give these two some, so they can stop making the United States a laughable joke the way Bush/Dick is doing to us.

Leimomi Matunding   September 9th, 2008 2:20 pm ET

Right on Biden! Beautiful idea on "stem cell research" back at the Republicans!

Keith COrnelius   September 9th, 2008 2:20 pm ET

Oh yeah one more thing where were the Democrats with the gas going through the roof, people losing there jobs and homes…on a 5 week vacation and pelosi was promoting her book which was a failure and only sold about 3,000 copies….so lets put cards on the table ladies and gentlemen !!!

yed   September 9th, 2008 2:20 pm ET

Get em Biden! Conservatives are in the dark ages. They should just go hang out at Michaelangelo's grave. I bet he could tell them a thing or two about religious supression and the lack of progress in medicine and research it creates.

CNNman   September 9th, 2008 2:20 pm ET

I think the Obama camp should let Mr. Biden talk more. The more he talks, the more he offend some group of people. This is way too funny seeing the Obama bandwagon getting deflated by the VP. LOL!

Anonymous   September 9th, 2008 2:19 pm ET

I strongly support Obama/Biden, but I'm not sure this line of attack is in the ticket's best interest.

No Way. No How. No McCain-Palin.   September 9th, 2008 2:19 pm ET

Sen. Biden is correct on this issue. The GOP has consistently voted against the interest of children with special needs. One word: hypocrisy.

Bill in Colorado   September 9th, 2008 2:18 pm ET

Joe is trying to grab just a few headlines from Gov Palin…..or is it crumbs?

Andy   September 9th, 2008 2:18 pm ET

This bozo is doing everything he can to ensure Hillary is put on the ticket. He will leave the ticket in October and Hillary will take his place. Come on, who doesn't see this coming?

Keith COrnelius   September 9th, 2008 2:18 pm ET

Obam, needs to get his fact correct the Republicans have not been in controll the Democrats have been for the last two years…duh
And all they have been is obstuctionists, the Democrats are more concerned about the party name and not the people of this country. For two years they had control and they have done nothing but sit back and watch the economy go in the tank, just so they can blame it on the republicans….that is not watching out for the people that is watching out for the party, which is also why as a DEMOCRAT I am VOTING FOR McCAIN/PALIN. The Deomcrats would not be in a neck and neck race if they chose Clinton but instead they had to go to the extreme (Liberalism) just like the Republicans did when Newt Gingrich was around the Republicans went to the extreme right…America smarten up already and vote for the individual and not the party…and in this case you take the lesser of two evils and that is McCain / Palin…none of the candidate can apeal to everybody's whininning, humanly impossible.. Please tell me when Obam has gone against his party for the good of the people vs the party you can't…I'll come back to being a democrat when PELOSI, REID and the nit job DEAN is gone…Ladies and gentlemen thos are the facts and I challenge anybody to say otherwise…without the name calling

sabdra   September 9th, 2008 2:18 pm ET

People should not be quiet just because she has a baby with downs syndrome and a pregnant teen age daughter. She must debate stem cell research and teen pregnancy. Welcome to the real world sarah and politics. It's not always polite. It comes with wanting to lead.

Carl Justus   September 9th, 2008 2:18 pm ET

When a baby is born in a Petri dish, then I will concede it is a viable human being, until then I will call it what it is a few cells capable of becoming a baby if all the right things are done to it and it is put into a woman's body at the right place and at the right time.

Many women have these implanted into their bodies and get nothing by BROKE from all the promises they are given.

I want to hear what those who say they are absolutely against stem cell research tell me what they think about the four (400 plus) of the stem cells that are thrown in the trash and destroyed EACH MONTH. I have asked some who do not want stem cell research and they will stop the conversation immediately. They will say using them for research is destroying a human being, but they say ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ABOUT THOSE 400 PLUS THAT ARE TRASHED EACH MONTH.

So the only thing I can understand about the situation is that trashing them is not destroying a human, but using them to possibly cure many problem medical problems such as birth defects, spinal cord injuries, heart and other organ problems is destroying a human being.
Until a avid advocate against stem cell research explains that to me in a manner that I can understand and will make sense, I say they are just against those who have terrible medical problems and do not want them to get better

Ron L   September 9th, 2008 2:18 pm ET

I DO NOT understand the reluctance to allow stem research on embryo's that are going to be DISCARDED!!
Somebody needs to explain in clear terms..
WHY IS IT OK TO THROW THEM AWAY THAN TO USE THEM FOR RESEARCH???
I could even understand limiting the number of those scheduled to be discarded for use, BUT TO THROW THEM ALL AWAY???
IT DOES NOT MAKE SENSE!!
I believe this is an unwarranted fear that some one is going to use them for something else (maybe cloning). But this can be prevented by carefully controlling the number allowed to be used at one time. Fear is the most irrational of all human emotions and we can not allow it to be an overriding facter in this debate.
Believe me IF the natural progression of science is to include cloning, NOTHING WILL STOP IT FROM HAPPENING IN ANOTHER PART OF THE WORLD.
Backward thinking in this area is preventing the U.S. from being on the LEADING EDGE of it's POSITIVE health potential. We DO NOT want to be behind the rest of the world on this potentail medical backthrough.
We need to relax the band and move forward into the 21st Century.

lil jj   September 9th, 2008 2:18 pm ET

First of all, Palin is not the only woman who wears lipstick. Can you trust
a woman that compares herself to all things a pit bull ? Oh, by the way
communities usually do not tolerate unruly pits. Second of all, Palin lied
when she said God ordered the war. Bush and Cheney ordered the war.
Hello. Enough is enough. The American people deserves to know the
truth about this woman. Something is terribly wrong with a person that
will tell a lie on God to prove her point. Palin sounds like a extremist to me.

barbara   September 9th, 2008 2:18 pm ET

Thank you Joe. You may not be getting the coverage and publicity
Sarah Palin is getting, but atleast you are discussing the issues.
Keep talking. People are listening.

James   September 9th, 2008 2:17 pm ET

Keep at it Joe. I could care less if the GOP's fashion model VP is "offended".

Ike   September 9th, 2008 2:16 pm ET

Palin? …just a hypocrite. Let her talk about issues and not throwing sarcasms and lies that take this country to no where. we need more truth about her record. I believe american people are not foolish. And to the good women about there, this race is not about gender but about issues. who best represent your values today and tomorrow. also for those who need special needs, know Palin is not on your side, read her record-she slashed aid to schools for children with disabilities by 50%. Is that someone who cares about people with disability. Oh! I see, she now care after her son turned out to be in need as well. The truth is, she will not care for you. Finding yourself in a situation is no guarantee you'll work for or with those having similar situations. It also goes true with gender-because she's a lady does not mean she represents women values. Most women will turn down an offer from her to take her extreme postions.my one cent.

Carla from Colorado   September 9th, 2008 2:16 pm ET

Obama and Biden are not grasping any any straws – they are discussing the REAL issues that are up for voters consideration when choosing a Preis. & V.P. Sara Palin is full of "fluff" and contradictions when her podium comments are challenged – as they have been for 19 months for Obama. What are her views on stem cell research. What does she mean by an advocate and a friend? As a parent of a Down Syndrome son, I don't need an advocate and a friend-I need an end to the wait list for services and choices. I need health care options, I don't get "per diem" expenses to travel with my son – I have to pay for childcare out of my hard-earned $$$. This is just one issue but during the next 8 weeks, she's going to have to face the press, the debates and the American public with real answers to real issues all of us face in the other 49 states.

blue   September 9th, 2008 2:16 pm ET

yes, Joe tell them like it is. A true VP! not someone that did not anything about the VP position six weeks ago and now she is a candidate. Sarah is such a joke!

MB   September 9th, 2008 2:16 pm ET

What a low blow from Biden. If he was familiar with the issue and not playing for his base, he would know that non-embryonic stem cells have shown more potential than embryonic ones. But to suggest the mother of a disabled child does not care about those children is reprehensible.

LET S TALK ISSUES   September 9th, 2008 2:15 pm ET

IT IS TIME TO STOP PLAYING AND START TALKING REAL ISSUES.

Bob   September 9th, 2008 2:15 pm ET

There is nothing wrong with what Joe Biden said. Since she has a disabled child she should be the first one supporting it.

Warren - Independent   September 9th, 2008 2:15 pm ET

McCain is 100% against pork belly earmarks but his VP is the queen of them! In 2 years she got 750 million and did not return the earmark monies she got for the Bridge to nowhere which she was originally for! Now saying she was never for! Outright LIE…..
No wonder she can have NO property Taxes, No State Taxes and give money back to the residences of Alaska! She is an out right thief of the American Tax payers!
Come on Hillary supporters! Palin does not stand for 1 thing Hillary stands for. Atleast Hillary and Obama are very close to each others ideas. Actually not really any difference!
For someone to say they are a Christian and come out and blatantly lie and steal from the American tax payers does not sound to Christian to me! If this is your idea of being a Christian, I feel sorry for you!
To me sounds like she has NO integrity and No morals! And it seems many going to still vote for her just because she is a woman! I really hope not! I think that most Democrats, Independents and especially most WOMEN have a lot more smarts than that!
Remember she is not the top of the ticket! DON’T VOTE GENDER!!!!!!
Republican Presidents puts us in wars and kills our economy and Democratic Presidents have to fix the mess! That is history!
4 more years of the same does not appeal to me! Times are bad enough without letting McCain hurt us for another 4 years!

Together, she will introduce him while he stands there looking like a puppet! I find it funny that she blatintly lies and he supports the lies! Which one would actually be president?

So he thinks that Down Syndrome babies should not exist…the world should just be filled with perfect people?

well…at least he is in sync with his running mate who thinks down syndrome babies can be aborted after they are out of the womb too.

This is disgusting….now they are attacking this ladies down syndrome kid…that somehow he is not perfect enough to exist in this world and we need to change him?

Disgusting Pigs…both of them

FreeNLovIt   September 9th, 2008 2:13 pm ET

You shouldnt kill babies. My mother told me of this one couple who aborted their baby and the mother kept hearing the cries of a baby. As Christians, they confessed their sins and had asked God for another pregnancy. She was pregnant again and gave birth to a baby.

My personal viewpoint on abortion is that if it has a heartbeat, you should keep it unless it is hazardous to your health.

If it doesnt have a heartbeat, I dont have a problem clipping my toenails.

Paul   September 9th, 2008 2:12 pm ET

Good call, Joe. Palin flew for hours to give birth (at 44!!!) to a kid that she knew needed special attention. What a freak show.

Truth Be Told   September 9th, 2008 2:11 pm ET

Actually Gov. Palin provided funding for children with special needs.
Those are the FACTS.

No Palin Pitbull Lips   September 9th, 2008 2:11 pm ET

Joe,
I support you and Obama. I don't support stem cell research because it is my understanding that embryos will be used.

KATHLEEN   September 9th, 2008 2:11 pm ET

artists.!!!!

S. Shay   September 9th, 2008 2:10 pm ET

Forget stem cell research let's just call it like it is – why would ANY KINDHEARTED, GENUINE, INDIVIDUAL with the power to effect change CUT spending for kids with disabilities in the first place? Why? Because before she thought she had the perfect kids and the perfect family and along comes Trig and now she is some kind of champion for women with diabled children? Who in the hell appointed her as God? Women everywhere should take offense to her attempts to have a monopoly on an issue that she IS against, I have seen no info that she reversed her cuts to these programs. It's called pandering folks, and it's the ultimate kind of panderring because she's using her family from her pregnant daughter to her disabled cute little baby to her son going to Iraq to masked the fact the she is a power hungry empty suit.

Arden   September 9th, 2008 2:10 pm ET

There is an article in the L.A. Times today written in by Gloria Steinem-Opinion "DEAD ON". Please, Please, Joe Biden and Barack need to read this and get it to the Obama Campaign staff. Everything in this article is so true and it could really slam-dunk the McCain/Palin Ticket.

John   September 9th, 2008 2:10 pm ET

Not all stem cell involves human embryos.

Mike - Texas   September 9th, 2008 2:09 pm ET

Biden is showing us how little he knows what is going on with stem sell research these days.

The more energy that is put into stem cell research the more it is showing us that we do not need EMBRIONIC stem cell research.

Biden is CLUELESS as ususal.

alvino   September 9th, 2008 2:09 pm ET

Sarah Palin is the darling of the Rep. Party. If you overlook her stand on stem cell research, troopergate, bridge to nowheregate, Alaska earmarksgate, pastorgate, e-bay gate and lobbyist gate, she becomes the answer in how to reform government in Washington DC.

Joe Cheesehead, WI   September 9th, 2008 2:09 pm ET

Palin gave birth to her 1st born eight months after her wedding. I guess abstinence doesn’t work and Bristol and Levi are a true testament to that, they’re going to be 2nd generation shotgun newly weds. Now I understand what this "holier than thou" meant when she said life happens. Oh the pain of irony.

Mike   September 9th, 2008 2:08 pm ET

You liberal fanatics are no better than the right wing conservatives you denigrate. It is pathetic in every way to use Down Syndrome as a political tool. Many of you are only voting for Obama because he is black and you have the courage to attack women for supporting Palin as a female. You are everything that is wrong with this country– Own it!

Bitter in Texas   September 9th, 2008 2:08 pm ET

I'm surprised that no one will ever admit that they helped elect Dauba for two terms and are probably the ones that have been screaming the loudest for the last eight years. Lord help us all if they elect McSame/Saint Palin…that should put the final touches on the Good Old USA. Ya know, God gave mankind a brain, we outa try using it every once in a while, but the Repugs must consider "thinking" a mortal sin. Oh I forgot, those of us that "THINK" are just liberals and that my friends is a dirty word.

Disgusted in Minneapolis   September 9th, 2008 2:08 pm ET

Sarah Palin doesn't really know where she stands on anything. For the Bridge to Nowhere then against it AFTER Congress pulls the plug but keeping the money they sent and using where it was not "earmarked" for, against "pork" but taking per diems when staying at home, pro-life (against abortion) but willing to send her son to Iraq to kill someone elses babies, hockey mom but not a hockey mom (maybe a former hockey mom), the list will grow daily.

What is the difference between Sarah Palin and Dick Cheney? No it's not lipstick (they both wear it). Palin is a better shot and only Cheney wears panties.

Nancy   September 9th, 2008 2:08 pm ET

First of all – I have a child with a rare chromosome disorder. Second of all – it is not all stem cell research that is not supported – it is "embyonic" stem cell research that is opposed – by Palin and myself. This is a common mistake – stem cell research from other than embryonic has had notable success. I do not wish that any cure/treatment for my son come from the destruction of embryo's.

McSame/Palin, some things never change   September 9th, 2008 2:07 pm ET

"Leave her kids alone ,what is wrong with you? Ok you want to put her in a I got you position.Stop using her baby for your political gain because all that is comming is a backlash. What is it with Obama democrats since the primaries, misogyny has nothing to do with hope."

Uhh Lin, the baby's own mother is using him for political gains, parading him around out on the campain trail. If that isn't backwards I don't know what is.

Nel from Chicago   September 9th, 2008 2:07 pm ET

"Notice how the republicans are pro-life when it comes to embryos, but don't care how many young adults die in senseless wars?

That's not being pro life, it's being a hypocrite."

Thanks for saying this…it's SO true!

Debbie Joyner   September 9th, 2008 2:07 pm ET

She support stem cell research, just not embryonic stem cells (but don't let the facts get in your way) By the way for those who say she cut special needs funds – check factbusters and politifact, who by the way has all webpage devoted to debunking "Sliming Sarah Palin" rumors – it is not true. And I don't know why I would expect CNN to check it's facts on McCain's position – but for those interested McCain supported embryonic stem cell research in congress when it was seen as the only technologically feasible method of stem cell research, now that stem cell research is progressing with non-embryonic stem cells, he does not support embryonic research, only research on stem cells from other sources.

karen-phoenix   September 9th, 2008 2:07 pm ET

As a mother of a handicapped child, stem cell research is a God Sent to HOPE for my child!!!! Pelin just wants to blow up the world so Jesus will come back and all the "true" christians will be saved in Alaska!!! The women is NUTS!!!! First her judgement is just a bad as McCain–McCain threw his first wife under the bus and then screwed thousands of seniors out of their retirement–he should have gone to jail!! Pelin NEVER should have gotten pregant in the first place–she told NOT too!!! AND now she won't even fund special ed or homes for unwed mothers!!!! PRAY for Obama/Biden–they are the only the American people have!!!!

FreeNLovIt   September 9th, 2008 2:07 pm ET

I support Obama, but I was disappointed when he also embraced atheism and I wrote stuff to his site to inform him of the circustances.

Basically, Mother Russia banned God from all daily walks of life. The politicians and Mother Russia woke up, and they have raised generations of evil men and women. Gorbachev FORCED them to open the doors of the churches. He FORCED the Communist regime to understand that there is no reason to persecute Christians who are the most law-abiding citizens.

Apart from God, we Spiritually Rot to the core. Like the Bible says, we're like the stenches from graveyards.

Abortion is killing and it should be done ONLY if you have to…

Understanding (Palin)   September 9th, 2008 2:07 pm ET

I understand Sarah Palin's position on this issue and I agree with her and disagree with BIDEN. She understands that she's not GOD. She knows that she was put in this position for a reason. I LOVE HER!!!!!! I'll vote for OBAMA/PALIN. I think they'll make a GREAT TICKET

Barbara Gooch   September 9th, 2008 2:06 pm ET

Stem cell is a little differant than someone being born with a disability don't you think? Biden keeps talking and trying to find fault with every thing the lady stands for, just keep going Dem. and you will hurt yourselves, as you already have. I think Palin is a very good candidate and she and McCain gets ny vote. Also if the Palin is praying that should be enough.

Paris   September 9th, 2008 2:06 pm ET

When Biden ran for the office he had less than 2% of the votes.
Why does he think he is relevant now?

Compare him to Palin 85% approval and what it has done
for McCain and you see again what good judgment is and can do.

RH   September 9th, 2008 2:06 pm ET

The joy of raising a child with a disability? Ok. It's really sad how everybody's been cowed into treating Palin with kid gloves for fear of being accused of sexism. You want to end sexism ladies? Honestly, I doubt you really do, but just in case, here's a tip: stop paying so much attention to gender!!!

Maggie   September 9th, 2008 2:06 pm ET

You democrats are running scared now. People are tired of Obama now and what he represents. I do not like or trust the man. I thought he said that he was not going to run a negative campaign but he is doing it more than McCain. Palin is like a fresh of breath air and because she is liked the democrats are all getting hot and heavy on her. LEAVE HER ALONE!!!! STOP TREATING HER LIKE HOW YOU OBAMA SUPPORTERS TREATED HILLARY CLINTON. YOU OBAMA SUPPORTERS DISRESPECTED CLINTON SO MUCH BUT I KNOW THE REPUBLICANS WILL NOT ALLOW THE SAME THING TO HAPPEN TO PALIN. NOBODY STOOD UP FOR HILLARY SO SHE WAS LEFT ALONE TO DEAL WITH LUNATICS BUT ITS NOT GOING TO WORK AGAINST PALIN!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am a Hillary Clinton supporter and I am very disappointed in you women and how you are portraying this woman (Palin). I am a woman first and I respect all women. This is why Hillary did not become the candidate because of you women. That's why women will never get further ahead because of your actions. We have strong, good women in this country and the abuse that is inflicted on them amazes me. Come on you women wake up and lets not disown our own gender because of what party she represents. If we had all stuck with Hillary, she would have been the democrat nominee.

Cindy   September 9th, 2008 2:06 pm ET

Palin is a quick study alright… on Rovian tactics. She's wearing Trig on her lapel like a flag pin. Her kids are props for her campaign. I'm glad she kept Trig… he's a beautiful baby. Trig will have plenty of love and support. Not all babies are as fortunate. You cannot lump all situations into Trig's basket. And just because Palin has Trig, it does not mean she'll support others with her situation.

Voting for Palin is truly a crap shoot right now. I really hope she reveals her true self before November comes around. I am really uncomfortable with the idea that people may vote for her simply because of a Trig pin. or a Track armband… and then later find out she's nothing like she's pretending to be. And then McCain steps down as President and all of a sudden.. we have a President Palin…

Mrs.L   September 9th, 2008 2:06 pm ET

I totally agree with I'm dumb founded again. Why is that every four years our brains totally turn to mush. The rich get richer the poor get poorer and we pretend not to see the elephant in the room.

WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!!! BEFORE ITS TOO LATE!!!!

Do you really think McCain, Palin have more in common with the common people of this country or do they represent the ELITE/ SILVERSPOONERS.

Noone is jealous but call it like it is. Stop pretending that they are just normal people.
How much longer are we going to allow these greedy liars to take take take.

Cathy in MD   September 9th, 2008 2:06 pm ET

I expect that once Palin is finally released from training camp and is forced to answer some very important questions – as Senator Biden has done repeatedly and with such eloquence – we will see the polls shift yet again in favor of Barack Obama. Furthermore, I don't believe the polls are accurate since they exclude those energized young voters with cell phones — a large demographic for Obama. McCain is an out-of-touch politician who doesn’t quite have what it takes, but appears desperate enough to win this election by his willingness to gamble away the future of this country on a reckless, eleventh-hour whim called Sarah Palin. Now that’s a Bridge to Nowhere. I’d rather be left to fend for myself in the Alaskan wilderness – moose and all. Thanks, but NO THANKS!!!

daniel   September 9th, 2008 2:05 pm ET

You just dont get it joe, leave it alone. Wouldn't "I will help you also" be a better answer to Palin's pledge?? You don't have to try and tear down and disagree on everything. Just like the last four years of nothing but "it's bush's fault "for everything, even when it rains. We don't care about these old tirads, you have beat it to death. The public is actually smarter than this, always has been. The biggest gimmick in politics today is blame it on bush not the gimmick of having palin as a vp. And that isn't working except in hollywood. Pretty soon it will be "Joe must go" so obama can pick hillary like he should have and it would have been game over. Three people show up to see Joe holler, thousands to see Palin…..you just don't get it Joe, they didn't care about your two pres runs, they don't see you as a vp. Could it be us reg folks have paid attention to your record??

bridgette   September 9th, 2008 2:05 pm ET

Wow imagine that Obama/Biden talking about the issues. This is election contrary to what McCain's campaign manager may think will be on the issues. That is what this will be about. Because we will make them be about it. That $404 billion dollar deficit so far this year guess who's paying for that. We are so stop letting all of this media outlets not focus on the issues. We have heard nothing from McCain/Palin campaign but slogans. And the average American is not feeling this duo no matter how much phony and made up statistics they are coming out with.

Debra   September 9th, 2008 2:05 pm ET

Before Sarah Palin had a special needs child, Palin killed a bill that would have supported children with special needs. How convient that she is now for it. Same with the Bridge to Nowhere. She supported it until she realized it was political suicide. Such a barracuda…..right. But Sarah will pray for you, especially for homosexuals and thier conversion to hetrosexual.

As on many issues, Governor Palin is going to side step. Other than ranting and raving about "nonissues," she doesn't appear to have a concise view about anything. Please, may we hear about Alaska's educational system, teenage pregancy rate in her state etc. etc.

It has been 7 days of FEAR for the democrats.

They played dirty thinking This election was a shoo in for ANY democrat- even the least qualified, totally inexperienced, do-nothing orator that they installed over the better qualified candidate.

They thought this year they had the luxury of being politically correct instead of going with the BEST and most qualified candidate. They did not think that anything mattered but the Big D.

So they tossed out the rule book, subverted the democratic process and selected and installed the least likely candidate to win.

Now they see the folly of not allowing fair campaigns and forcing the feel-good politically correct- albeit unqualified- candidate on America.

I smell the fear in every insult and attack and lie the democrats throw out there.

FreeNLovIt   September 9th, 2008 2:04 pm ET

I support CREATIONISM And EVolution. It's not fair that you should teach one and not the other.

Evolution is a fraud. God does not approve of the message. Evolution is a concept that Hitler embodies.

My friends once told me that the President of the US, does not have to have a relgion. He can be an atheist. I told all my friends that if that is true, then Hitler can be our President.

The mission and vision of the church is to help the needy.
The mission and vision of Evolution is the strong survive.

It's two opposites. Without a relationship with God, anyone can be a Hitler any day.

What I don't understand, and no one has ever been able to explain to me, is that how the GOP can be against stem cell research but have no problem when thousands are thrown away everyday because they weren't used.

So, it's ok to throw them away, but don't you dare use them to advance medical research.

Rich and Greedy   September 9th, 2008 2:03 pm ET

Trust me, I'm not alone – there are enough of us to put Palin/McCain in the White House (~5% of voters in 2004 election). Frankly, we only care about ourselves and will vote for Republicans because they always care about us – we are making > $250,000 and simply don't want to pay more taxes under Obama/Biden. Furthermore, Palin/McCain promised us even more tax cuts!

Biden fails again while putting a spotlight on how he says once thing with regard to his faith and practices another.

The Democrats have aptly demonstrated in the past week that they exist in a political zugzwang. Best bet for them is simply to be quiet.

Steve   September 9th, 2008 2:02 pm ET

Do any of you suggesting the use of "other" stem cells have a science background? There is a reason embryonic stem cells is crucial to curing many of our illnesses! Embryonic stem cells, unlike other stem cells, are undifferentiated and can, therefore, have the potential to become any cell in the human body. Do you know how many lives could be saved?

Really, the solution here is simple: People who don't support embryonic stem cell research should just decline any treatment derived from these stem cells for their illnesses while supporters benefit from the research. In this way, we all win. The religious folk won't be affected by the research and can stop dictating how the rest of us live our lives!

Greg   September 9th, 2008 2:02 pm ET

That's what VP should do, talking about real issues. Palin? Come on… What she did so far just mocking, trashing and telling lies about Obama/Biden. I am not an American citizen, but I live in the US and I love America. Come on America.. time to get smart. Don't be fooled by crazy lunatic McCain/Palin. It is time to reconstruct this country from idiots who only think about themselves like Bush&McCain.

Tamarra   September 9th, 2008 2:01 pm ET

It is funny that Barack Obama is being accused of all talk. Well He is the only one talking about the issues. He is the only one talking about his plans. What is the McCain talking about? Nothing but ebay and planes. He is talking about pork barrow spending that Palin already spent on a town she left in debt. So the choice is obvious. Vote on the issue or vote on lies.

> Concentrate on what is working and not on what is not working.

Guess what? Palin doesn't support stem cell research of *any* kind. I guess you would have to actually believe in science to fund medical research.

Oh Boy!!!???   September 9th, 2008 2:00 pm ET

If not for stem cell research, would special needs kids efforts be a special interest group.

I really don't have a problem with special needs kids getting well deserved help, but not just these kids. Why not ALL kids like Obama is suggesting?

I'm not for every special interest group, but isn't being for one (that affects you), and being against all others (not thought of by yourself) a bit hypocritical?

Can anyone say Parkinsons? Cancer?   September 9th, 2008 1:59 pm ET

Stem cell research and education are the bigger issues at stake. This election is about so much more than whether Palin forgot she wanted the bridge, whether she really is a maverick or just another Republican, or if she likes her moose tartare or well-done…

This topic has much bigger consequences for individuals than most in this election.

Whether Democrat, Republican, Independent or Anarchist – we all will have someone we love (or maybe ourselves) who may benefit by stem cell research. The religious rhetoric sounds great – "pro life" – who isn't pro-life? But isn't there another component to life than just at the beginning? What about the middle and the end? What about finding a way to make an abortion – a terrible, but sometimes necessary choice – have some small benefit?

How will you feel when you find out that had you been a little more educated about science and had supported basic research including stem cell research that you or your mom, dad, child, mentor might have lived a little longer? In a little less pain? With a little more hope?

But instead you voted for a ticket that painted itself as "Maverick" enough to make sure that American citizens won't have the best research and science in the world?

Sad.

J from DC   September 9th, 2008 1:58 pm ET

Yes John McCain is switching his colors and talk to match Obama's. Conservative Republicans are running as Democrats now. But be not fooled. This is not the reason for his recent poll bumps.
Stop looking for dirt on Palin because she is clean, maybe vindictive at best. The hard reality is that women identify with her because she looks and feels familiar to them. The problem is that they really can’t see how different she is from most of them. When they switch the Supreme Court next year, pro-choice goes out the window with it. But not for 4 years, but for the next 20 years. That is the wool being pulled over women’s eyes.
Problem is, women are not carrying this critical issue (their right to choose) in the forefront of their minds. They won’t get it tell it’s too late, and after the price for Palins seat proves too expensive in personal rights.

I love when the Obama camp speaks on "issues."

CHANGE education: Let's take a look at Chicago, where our illustrious candidate spent some time "in the trenches" of the community. Their inner-city schools are so bad, that the Harvard graduates send the little O's to private school. I guess Obama's solution is trick the American people into dumping more money into a failing system? Sounds like More of the Same, to use some Harvard rhetoric.

CHANGE the economy: His administration promises to be More of the Same of his campaign, except instead of asking for our money they'll just take more of it.

CHANGE healthcare: By adopting Hillary Clinton's plan, because she's smart with ideas, and Obama's good with words.

The country will be a joke if we vote for this ticket.

In know that Biden and Obama focus on the issues instead of the idiotic lies of Palin/McCain …. but I am worried that this will at the end not play with the American public – which suffers in large parts from ADD. The Palin/McCain hate speeches are shorter and easier to understand for some (so many) folks. I think the Democrats need a good hit man or hit woman. This would be the time for Hillary but I hear she will sit this one out (until 2012, I think). Anyway, I hope for the sake of the American People she will find her voice again. Stem cell research looks promising for the treatment, if not the cure, of a wide variety of illnesses and injury related conditions. Other nations are pouring billions into the research and the financial returns could be enormous. The United States would be making a serious mistake if we let other nations take the lead and reap the benefits. If other nations make the breakthroughs and get the patents, make no mistake…the American people will be getting the treatments with the research and cash flowing to the patent holders. For all the ethical arguments being put forth by both sides on this issue, when it comes down to a family member having the chance at a normal life, we WILL go for the treatment. We can either be a bystander or lead in this field.

Palin staying firm on bridge to nowhere what a surpise, is her middle name george or sydney. Do they think the people don't read or at least listen to the news. Something sounds mighty fishy about this bounce. I think ithat the new crowds are all staged. With the new money mccain and palin are more likely paying most of them to particpate in rallies, you know sort of like build it and they will come.

Another thing I have looked at palin every day since she entered the arena, and I have to say that she is not pretty ,beautiful, nice looking or even cute. Grant it she's not ugly like cindy. She looks like someone from the back hills who has come down to town and is 20yrs behind time in all aspects, looks dress, demeaning, speech, etc.

But like I said build it and they will come, or the builders will report that they came.

How stupid do they think we are. Give her more welfare for her, her husband and children and send them back to the hills.

fixthebroken   September 9th, 2008 1:52 pm ET

Here is a question no one against stem cell research has been able to answer successfully or honestly….

If you knew your child could be saved from either a birth defect or a terminal disease by an anecdote that was found from stem cell research — would you unequivocally without hesitation say no? Would you say without a doubt "Nope. Don't want it. Just let the child have the birth defect or die".

Would you be willing to sign an affidavit saying that such that if the time came, you would not be allowed to use said anecdote?

Robert   September 9th, 2008 1:52 pm ET

Typical Democratic misleading. They consistently try to say that stem cell research is illegal because of Republicans. It is not now and never was illegal. Only government funding is not allowed. If stem cells were really that promising don't you think the 'greedy' pharmecutical companies would be eager to make expensive treaments based on stem cells. They are not trying because it is just not that promising. Sure makes a good Democrat party stick to poke in Republicans eyes though. Maybe Democrats should stop poking out eyes and 'stick' to the facts.

I am the father of a child who died shortly after birth as a result of birth defects. There is no greater emptiness than two young parents going home from the hospital with an empty infant seat.

If embryonic stem cell research can save but one percent of the children born with serious defects, then it is worth the effort. The researchers are using embryos that will never be permitted to develop into babies under any circumstances. Stem cell research is not abortion.

Is it better to suppress science and endanger future life just so an embryo can be discarded, rather than used for the common good? I don’t think so.

Vote for science and the future of our children, vote Obama.

For those of you who want to learn more about this, please read about stem cells from adults which have almost as much potential as embryonic stem cells. And with the technology advancing fast, we hope to eliminate the need for using embryonic stem cells by using other multipotent cells and engineered cells. This issue should not be the deciding factor in who will be our next President and Vice President. National security, economy and education are much more important and it is clear that the McCain-Palin ticket is far superior in dealing with those issues!!! By the way, I am a stem cell biologist.

Hey Biden, you don't have a child with special needs, so don't act like you know how to "fix" these children!! Palin understands from experience, as do I, that what is needed is some much needed help and relief for the parents of these special people. While we very much yearn to see our children progress developmentally, most of us understand how valuable each potential life is and are not so selfish as to destroy it for our own benefit.

FYI pro-choicers, I'd be willing to bet my next paycheck that most parents of special needs children are as vehemently opposed to abortion as I am.

Some how Americans are going to have reject some of the extreme rights views and policies as for the most part they are counter productive and regressive.

The religious wackos seem all consumed with preventing abortion on the grounds life might possibly begin at conception but have absolutely no conern for the living persons who are in harms way through either war or lack of health care.

Now the Republicans have obviously adopted the position the Iraq invasion wasn't about oil as per McCain's confession in his senior moment but is now a holy war being waged at God's will.

VERY VERY SCARY

Danny in Chicago   September 9th, 2008 1:49 pm ET

The republicans are stuck in the past, so what do they do?

They try to act like democrats!!!

I think enough of us Democrats are going to see through this lie

Do the republicans EVER tell the truth? I mean – aren't they going to hell in a handbasket? How can they be proud???!?!?!?!?!?!

Maria   September 9th, 2008 1:49 pm ET

Go Biden!!!!

What bidden cares about and talks:
Issues, Issues & Issues
Real Change & Solutions.

What Palin cares about and talks:
Lies, Lies, Lies
Attacks & Mud throwing

People wake up!!!

Pat F   September 9th, 2008 1:48 pm ET

This is gross, and Biden is an ill-informed fool.

Palin's contact with special needs children is based on her being a parent of a Down's child. Down's Syndrome is not susceptible to treatment with stem cells.

Would ANYONE say that Biden should be more knowledgeable about automobile safety because of the personal tragedy in his past?

Jennifer, Philadelphia   September 9th, 2008 1:48 pm ET

The "problem" with stem-cell research is that it is destroying a life (and please save the argument, an embryo is life, whether viable or not). Being an advocate of special needs or disabled people and being against stem-cell research are not exclusive of one another. You can be both.

Southern Girl   September 9th, 2008 1:48 pm ET

She is so confused. Continues to contradict herself. What else is new. Again, she is showing how selfish of a mother she is. So sad. I am over Sarah Palin. I cannot even stomach her anymore. Truly disgusted.

Emily   September 9th, 2008 1:48 pm ET

How about the issues of child care and healthcare? The family with a child with disability has so many issues, spending more time on care of the child often hurts our job, as we can not spend as much time as colleagues, if we lose our jobs, we lose our healthcare, while the child needs so much more healthcare supports. Overall, Democrat has better policies for us. I hope Biden could elaborate more.

CItizen of USA   September 9th, 2008 1:47 pm ET

WHAT IS YOUR POINT? JUST ANOTHER WAY OF TRYING TO GET A PALIN. WELL, WE WEREN'T BORN YESTERDAY. WE GET YOUR MESSAGE AND IT IS NOT GOING TO INFLUENCE US IN THE WAY WE VOTE. THANK YOU.

Tom in CA   September 9th, 2008 1:47 pm ET

Concentrate on the ISSUES! Differentiate between the Ds and the Rs.

McCain has to take off the yoke of Bush. Can he do that with a voting record that backed Bush's policies 89% in 2006, 95% in 2007 and 100% in 2008?

Palin has over 20 of her own scandals that will start to take the luster off her once the media is able to talk to her one on one. However, Charlie Gibson is not the one to do this – too many softballs will be thrown her way.

TerryDo--   September 9th, 2008 1:47 pm ET

The Democratic with all their fall stories about Sarah Palin have proven themselves unreliable and detrimental to the American people.

Their propaganda against McCain/Palin is laughable. Obama and Biden are actually throwing the country cabin at them hoping something will stick, but the only thing sticking is the sorry state of politics in this country.

If not Clinton than definitely McCain/Palin 2008

redneck for obama   September 9th, 2008 1:47 pm ET

stoopid republicans want to keep us in the stone age.

Think it through   September 9th, 2008 1:46 pm ET

The cells from cord are nearly as effective and it does not require the cloning of human cells. Why are the Dem. party members so cavalier with human life? I cannot figure this out.

Until a child is born into the world he/she has no protection at all from this party. This literally makes me sick to my stomach.

East Coast Bum   September 9th, 2008 1:46 pm ET

Same old repuks……..They cannot support stem cell because their releigon says they can't. Gosh forbid you actually have a brain and think for yourselves. Watch, in 60 years, stem cell research will be hailed as a miracle for modern medicane, if we can get past the religeous nut jobs out there.

Emma, San Jose, CA   September 9th, 2008 1:45 pm ET

How can any reasonable, intelligent person see Palin as up to date on the things that science has taught us and will continue to teach us? She refuses to buy into evidence-based evolutionary research. And her objection to stem-cell research makes her seem less than intelligent.
How can we take the chance that this woman could be president if need be? Of course, we can expect a lot of men to vote for her because they
see her as a "cute chick." And McCain has repeatedly showed dishonesty in his campaign. There is so much McCain anger expressed with his attacks. If McCain becomes our next president, we will have voted for a corrupt, condescending guy whose focus is stuck on going to wars.

tracy   September 9th, 2008 1:45 pm ET

Get them mighty Joe. She is a fraud and she basically lies to the AMerican people about her bridge to nowhere. talk about thses issues that will split their party up. At least the democrats agree on the same issues. That is what McCain gets for pandering to the AMerican people. We have a friend in the Whitehouse in Barack Obama.

Go McCain/Palin   September 9th, 2008 1:44 pm ET

I will not support stem cell research or science if it means killing babies. We all know that the earth, animals and man was created 10,000 years ago by God. Once we can all agree on this fundamental idea, we can move along with the proper education of our children. Maybe then, I will have enough confidence to put my children back into the public school system. Until then, I will happily teach them at home. Go Palin, it's so refreshing to see a strong, moral woman who will one day be my president.

Bruce   September 9th, 2008 1:44 pm ET

We will never know what Pallin beleives because it changes with what she is told by the McCain people. In fact I heard this morning that someone from the McCain campaign said if they ahve to sheild her from the press they will….come on….that is sexist…if she were a man everyone would be all over her… if you are going to play in the big leagues no matter what you sex you should expect to be treated the same. Do not think for minute if ths will hillary..anyone would care about what they said about her…beause of her sex.
I also want to hear from both campaings about the 407 BILLION budget deficit…what are any of them going to do to get this back to the surplus that bill clinton left us and W has squandered?

K.NIX   September 9th, 2008 1:43 pm ET

GET'EM JOE
CHUUURRCH!!!!

HIllarySupporter   September 9th, 2008 1:43 pm ET

Palin is a joke only uneducated woman will support her radical views and beliefs that she is trying to impose on people.

JAY   September 9th, 2008 1:43 pm ET

Only way to make progess is to take risk and study new theories. If their is a cause their is a effect. For every illness their is a cure, I really believe that, their is that opposite to all things.

Anna   September 9th, 2008 1:43 pm ET

I am for anything that would help this country. Right now, we need all the help we can get.

Obama/Biden '08

Reagan   September 9th, 2008 1:43 pm ET

So Biden who is for forced segregation, and also believes that anyone working at 7-11 is Indian, now want's Palin and other parent's with children who have special needs to use their children as stem cell research experiment subjects?

Why doesn't Biden drop out now and save Obama's campaign run? Shouldn't he be at home supporting his own son who is being accused of fraud and stealing millions?

shannon   September 9th, 2008 1:42 pm ET

the do support stem cell research…
just not ebc research.

Joe needs to learn the details.

Where's the Beef GOP?   September 9th, 2008 1:42 pm ET

How can the GOP claim any authority when they won't support early childhood education for early detection and intervention, cut funding on research in universities/science; no new policies; appoint judges who won't allow science to take place. What kind of gov't does the GOP offer? More of the McSame.

Randy   September 9th, 2008 1:42 pm ET

Are we talking about embyonic stem cell research? He does not say. That makes a huge difference and he does not seem to grasp the significance. That is our respect for human life needs to impact how we approach the question of research on human embryos.

Reason   September 9th, 2008 1:41 pm ET

Guys we don't want another Republican in office. No way no how no McCain-Palin. Vote Obama guys!!!

JAY   September 9th, 2008 1:41 pm ET

People fear stem cell because of the great possiblities it will bring. If people volunteer their embryos their shouldn't be a problem.

Timber   September 9th, 2008 1:41 pm ET

The Obamaphiles are getting desperate and digging up and making up whatever they can to throw at McPalin. Aaaah, how lovely to see them squirnimg after what they did to Hillary. Bad kharma..

Kristina, Seattle   September 9th, 2008 1:41 pm ET

Thank you Biden! Let's bring the focus back to the issues — and away from how much lipstick the pit bull does or doesn't wear.

MN2000   September 9th, 2008 1:41 pm ET

This is a really interesting point that Biden makes…. I never really thought of it that way before.

McCain/Palin campaign strategy:

"DOWN WITH REPUBLICANS! VOTE REPUBLICAN!"

Amber   September 9th, 2008 1:40 pm ET

Joe Biden is so boring. Who cares.

Should've picked Hillary. Oh well. NOW we get her in 2012 instead (and at the top of the ticket, no less). Hip-hip-hooray!!

IS YOUR MORTGAGE CURRENT? HAVE YOU LOST YOUR HOME?   September 9th, 2008 1:40 pm ET

GO JOE!!! WOOFWOOFWOOFWOOFWOOF!! KEEP IT COMING! CAN'T WAIT UNTIL THE DEBATES!

Double standards   September 9th, 2008 1:40 pm ET

How come it is okay for democrats to make sarcastic and snide references to things said by their opponents, but not okay when the republicans do the same thing?

demwit   September 9th, 2008 1:40 pm ET

Doofus Biden is confussed agian…., oldtimers perhaps?? Obama's should replace him with Hillary.., NOW!!

Jack   September 9th, 2008 1:40 pm ET

Hmmmm… let's see here on one hand we have a 30+ year senator that has done absolutely nothing in 30+years. He is running with a guy that has been there, about 10 days (outside of campaign time) and he has wrote 2 books about himself.

On the other hand we have a 30+ year senator that has served his country in uniform for 20+ years worked with Democrats on several pieces of legislation, had the guts to stand up to his own president, had the guts to make a choice of a VP that really could have hurt him but really was the only real reformer out there to pick from….

I think this will be the first time that i vote republican in my life.

PUMA PALIN   September 9th, 2008 1:40 pm ET

They do support stem cell research… even Bush does…

spin it joe… spin it…

It's sad to watch people sink…

Unempressed   September 9th, 2008 1:39 pm ET

Palin/Johnny – "If you care about it, why don't you support stem cell research?”

Tim, mississippi   September 9th, 2008 1:39 pm ET

wait a minute,

sarah's god told her to ban stem cell research, while

mccain's god is yet to speak to him about anything yet.

hmmm, grid lock within the ticket anyone?

dkp   September 9th, 2008 1:39 pm ET

Hi,

First of all, I'm all for stem cell research. We've made great gains using adult stem cells and further progressed should be pursued vigorously. What doesn't seem to be working in rats or humans is embroyonic stem cells which are the center of ethical debate. Concentrate on what is working and not on what is not working.

Chris in CT   September 9th, 2008 1:38 pm ET

I think it's important that people get THE FACTS on stem cell research before they weigh in- also, get the FACTS on how Palin killed a bill in AL that would SUPPORT kids with special needs, before she had one.

Michael Fournier   September 9th, 2008 1:38 pm ET

Palin is a wonderful friend for people with Disablities… As Governor, she cut state aid to schools for children with disabilities by over 50%. What a pandering hypocrite…

Lin   September 9th, 2008 1:37 pm ET

Leave her kids alone ,what is wrong with you? Ok you want to put her in a I got you position.Stop using her baby for your political gain because all that is comming is a backlash. What is it with Obama democrats since the primaries, misogyny has nothing to do with hope.

Pedro   September 9th, 2008 1:37 pm ET

That's the stuff Biden!! Bring on the issues so that everyone sees how shallow and out of touch with reality Palin really is!
She's just a pretty face, or as someone else put it: a VILF. And you can see that on the polls. Women don't like her while men do.

Brent   September 9th, 2008 1:37 pm ET

Palin would support stem cell research, just not EMBROYONIC stem cell research. Biden wouldn't support embroyonic stem cell research if he was a true practicing Catholic. All talk no walk in the faith…

Sammy   September 9th, 2008 1:37 pm ET

Well if the republicans raise a family privacy issue…. keeping in mind that Palin's name was not used nor was her family mentioned… then just what can democrats talk about? I suppose it would also mean pro-choice vs. pro-life cannot be talked about either. As always, supporters are going to complain and it would be the same if a statement referred to Biden's life instead.

Lone Star Wolf   September 9th, 2008 1:37 pm ET

Joe Biden might have some good points if he could just get someone to listen to him. McCAIN/PALIN 08

DisenfranchisedHills for McCain   September 9th, 2008 1:36 pm ET

It doesn't make sense to save a life at another life's expense. The danger there,is that our government could actually start encouraging abortion for selfish reasons, rather than the mental and physical health of the mother. It might also encourage cloning human beings, which is virtually the same thing, one life sacrificed for another. Just because a life form doesn't have a parent, per se,doesn't mean it is not a life form. If they can extract cells without harming a fetus,it might be a different matter for some, but who's to say?

Rebecca   September 9th, 2008 1:36 pm ET

Call the GOP on their Hypocricy. The media sure hasn't been doing it like they should be.

The GOP was very harsh in their attacks on teen pregnancy and bashed parents until one of there own came along. Now they are fully supportive of teen pregnacy all of a sudden. They can't have it both ways. It's wrong for all others but ok if it's one of them.

Rudy NYC   September 9th, 2008 1:36 pm ET

Touche'.

She does not support sex education is pubilc schools either because she feels it is the responsibility and the duty of the parent.

She supports teaching creationism in schools, not evolution.

She does not believe in global warming, nor the fact that much of it is created by man.

The lady is one with some rather extreme views, and she wishes to reform mine. No thank-you, Sarah. I believe and support the constitution of the United States. The one that separates church and state and guarantees my freedom of religion.

Jeff, AL   September 9th, 2008 1:35 pm ET

Wow. Seems Obama/Biden are grasping at anything they can to try and raise questions about McCain/Palin. I guess they have no choice but to do so given the fact they are quickly falling behind in this race.

Just Sayin...   September 9th, 2008 1:34 pm ET

explain that one GOP hypocrites…

60 yr old white woman   September 9th, 2008 1:34 pm ET

Thank you, Joe. As someone who suffers from advancing progressive multiple sclerosis, I've been through the entire realm of 'disease altering' medications, including a form of chemo. My options are used up until stem cell research can find a cure. Of course, I'll be dead by then at this rate. I cannot understand why people oppose the use of something that is to be discarded anyway, something that may answer so many mysteries and help millions of people. I was a very productive member of society until stricken with this illness and believe me when I say, I'd rather be working and productive than in the condition I am today.

Jeffer65   September 9th, 2008 1:32 pm ET

Wow someone who is acually talking about the issues. Good for you Biden. CNN you need to keep reporting on the issues like this and the economy, etc. Enough of the Palin heroine worship.

Mercedes   September 9th, 2008 1:32 pm ET

Thank you, Sen. Joe Biden for bringing this issue to the table. It needs to be cover because something is to you to some pep rally like the republicans are but not know what exactly they are ralling on. Maybe its because they resemble them somehow.

African AMERICAN   September 9th, 2008 1:32 pm ET

That's right…Repugs. put your money where your mouth is! Either support the search for a cure through stem cell research or provide financial aid to families of special needs children for their special care. Seems logical to me.

I thought women were smarter   September 9th, 2008 1:32 pm ET

I thought women were smarter to vote for a candidate based on what they believe that candidate can do for them, their families and the country. I was all for women backing Hillary but to switch to McCain and Palin overnight. That confussed me, McCain and Palin share NONE of Hillary's views. Which just goes to show your only voting for gender. GOD HELP US!!!

No vote for Osama BIn laDEN   September 9th, 2008 1:32 pm ET

I can't wait for Palin to eat your lunch in the debates Biden. Do you really want to present this issue to a mother of a child who has a disability? Can't wait to see you get a verbal butt kicking.

McCain=War   September 9th, 2008 1:31 pm ET

Notice how the republicans are pro-life when it comes to embryos, but don't care how many young adults die in senseless wars?

That's not being pro life, it's being a hypocrite.

Jeanne Beans   September 9th, 2008 1:31 pm ET

Right on, Joe!

DMD, New York   September 9th, 2008 1:31 pm ET

I think we should get this message out: catholics (and I suppose other christian denominations) are NOT against stem cell research. They ARE against EMBRYONIC stem cell research. Scientists can get stem cells from sources other than embryos. I personally support stem cell research, as long as it is not from embryos. This is a fine point that I think has been disregarded in the entire ethical argument regarding this topic.

brian   September 9th, 2008 1:31 pm ET

Nice to see a real issue come up! Surely McCain/Palin will respond with "what does a celebrity know about special needs?" Then they'll say "neener neener" and talk more about Paris Hilton.

I'm dumb founded again   September 9th, 2008 1:30 pm ET

How can the Presidential nominee support something and his running mate doesn't? This is what I mean that McCain only choose Palin to get the women vote. The republican party should be ashamed for using this woman and to the women voters shame on you for voting gender. Don't you care about this country and your right to choose? Obviously you don't!!!

Kirsten   September 9th, 2008 1:30 pm ET

why would she be an advocate of stem cell research when its already been proven that scientists can use other cells than stem cells for research?

MIKE   September 9th, 2008 1:29 pm ET

So he thinks that Down Syndrome babies should not exist…the world should just be filled with perfect people?

well…at least he is in sync with his running mate who thinks down syndrome babies can be aborted after they are out of the womb too.

This is disgusting….now they are attacking this ladies down syndrome kid…that somehow he is not perfect enough to exist in this world and we need to change him?

Disgusting Pigs…both of them

Spencer from VA   September 9th, 2008 1:29 pm ET

Joe Biden= A real VP talking about issues

Mr. Eko   September 9th, 2008 1:29 pm ET

"…a remark that follows repeated pledges from Republican VP nominee Sarah Palin, the mother of a baby with Down Syndrome, to parents of children with disabilities that she would be “a friend and advocate in the White House.”

All that she meant was she'll pray for you. Beyond that, you're screwed and on your own.

Candy West Virginia   September 9th, 2008 1:28 pm ET

Keep talking Biden, and teaching Sarah. She has a lot of learning to do in such a short period of time.
