The McCain campaign is out with a new ad.
The McCain campaign is out with a new ad.

(CNN) – John McCain’s campaign responded to Barack Obama’s new education ad Tuesday with a tough new spot that said the Democratic nominee’s only achievement on the issue was backing bills to bring sex education to children – marking a rare campaign ad foray into culture war territory.

“Education Week says Obama ‘hasn't made a significant mark on education.’ That he's ‘elusive’ on accountability,” says the announcer in the 30-second spot. “A ‘staunch defender of the existing public school monopoly.’

“Obama's one accomplishment? Legislation to teach ‘comprehensive sex education’ to kindergartners.

“Learning about sex before learning to read?

“Barack Obama. Wrong on education. Wrong for your family.”

The campaign said the ad will air in ‘key states.’

Within minutes, the Obama camp battled back. “It is shameful and downright perverse for the McCain campaign to use a bill that was written to protect young children from sexual predators as a recycled and discredited political attack against a father of two young girls – a position that his friend Mitt Romney also holds,” said campaign spokesman Bill Burton. “Last week, John McCain told Time magazine he couldn’t define what honor was. Now we know why.”

The ad marks a reprise of a primary season attack on Obama by a former McCain rival.
More than a year ago, then-presidential candidate Mitt Romney attacked Obama over his assurance to Planned Parenthood that he believed some sex education should begin in kindergarten - prompting a response from the Democrat's campaign team that during his tenure as Massachusetts governor, the state had allowed those lessons to begin as early as pre-kindergarten.

Earlier Tuesday, the Obama campaign released a new ad linking education policy to economics, accusing the Republican nominee of voting to cut education funding and telling voters “John McCain doesn’t understand.”

The McCain campaign accused the Obama team of making misleading claims in the spot.

Why is it everytime I see a report about Palin in the trail at some small town or rally she has her head down reading her comments off "Cheat cards"

One would think she would know her speech forwards and backwards by now. All she does is repeat the same crap she has been reading since she started. Does the woman have one original thought of her own.

Moderate   September 9th, 2008 7:51 pm ET

Just another typical McCain ad – nothing positive to share about his own policies / direction – just attacks – WHY? Because he has no plans for our country.

Rob from Honolulu   September 9th, 2008 7:50 pm ET

I can not believe how ignorant and stupid the Democrats are! I hear Obama say that Palin is off limits but CNN and all the left liberal media are doing their best to destroy her. What was that reporting on Palin's faith! It was an attempt by CNN, (Wolf & Brown) to create fear in the voters, CNN should be ashamed of themselves and might just find themselves out of work like Chris Mathews of MSNBC fame. Today you interview Bill Maher – keep it up – more votes for McCain/Palin!

cb   September 9th, 2008 7:50 pm ET

Millitary man – this for you, since you think that perverse ad is so funny. I sure you would find this funny also.

If you truly care about our veterans and this great country of ours...

...Don't vote for John McCain.

McCain voted against our troops MANY times in the senate.

John McCain voted AGAINST 20 million dollars for veteran care facilities.

John McCain voted AGAINST $322 million for safety equipment for our troops in Iraq.

John McCain voted AGAINST $1 billion dollars in new equipment for the National Guard.

John McCain voted AGAINST $430 million for veterans outpatient care.

Barack voted FOR all of these troop support initiatives.

They deserve better than McCain.

We deserve better than McCain.

SUPPORT OUR TROOPS AND VOTE FOR BARACK OBAMA FOR PRESIDENT

the fact that so many people WANT to believe decietful lies, twisted words, etc.... is what is so incredibly maddening. No one person or side is 100% right 100% of the time. No one person or side is 100% wrong 100% of the time.

But republicans would have you believe that.

Mandi   September 9th, 2008 7:49 pm ET

So...I guess John McCain supports child molesters!!! ALL kids should know how to protect themselves from pedophiles. The fact that McCain is against Obama's efforts to prevent child molestation is absolutely disgusting.

My five year old daughter might see this ad and that really disturbs me. Well I'm one white woman who WON'T be voting for McCain.

Maybe if Bristol Palin had a human biology lesson, she'd be a few pounds lighter on her wedding day.

A shotgun wedding on the Rose Garden...that'll REALLY educate our children......on what NOT TO DO!!!

Ivee   September 9th, 2008 7:48 pm ET

This is McCain's attempt at reviving Willie Horton. It seems the only thing McCain and Palin are able to do is attack - they never seem to provide any information about any platform or idea they may have (beyond the overly simplistic, and unworkable, "drill baby drill").

This is a revolting attempt to steer the debate toward nothing more than nonstop attacks. Heck, it's not even a debate any more. John McCain stopped discussing issues quite some time ago. Palin has never discussed issues. Neither of them will even talk to the press, unless, of course, it's the ever-malleable Republican hack, Charlie Gibson.

What on earth has gone wrong with this country that McCain and Palin are considered even remotely viable candidates?

zuq   September 9th, 2008 7:47 pm ET

IF ONLY PALIN'S KID GOT THIS EDUCATION!

Peter (CA)   September 9th, 2008 7:47 pm ET

The level of desperation the McCain campaign has sunk to is scary. How could they twist this issue so perversely? The Republicans are so out of touch it is scary.

And enough with trying to paint "liberals". Hopefully, Americans are mature enough to understand that when we all do well, then the country is a better place to live. The right-wingers-conservatives- Republicans use divisiveness to win. Why do you play in their hands?
Why does it scare you that Obama wants to raise taxes on those making more than $250,000/ year? Why is it scary that health care for all is actually good and will take the strain off of the health care system? Republicans lie to you when they give you the us vs. them stuff-don't buy it.

It's great that you're reporting what partisans are saying about this ad and Obama's, but how about you fact check them both so that your viewers can actually know the truth?

Don't wait for factcheck.org to get around to it. Do it now. And never mention either ad again unless you accompany that mention with the facts.

Integrity   September 9th, 2008 7:47 pm ET

To "The Nightingale Sings in Berkley Square" it amazing how low you wrong-wing hypocritical republican will go to scare people into voting for your party despite the nightmare this party has created during the past eight years. Why don't you talk about Senator Obama's eight years in the state senator and his accomplishment during the past four years as a US Senator? McCain “protect our country” is that why we went to war for WMD and there were no WMD", is that why McCain has moved more to the wrong to fall even more in line with Bush? Please, four words "it will not work"

Go Obama!

KATHLEEN   September 9th, 2008 7:46 pm ET

I have listened to CNN since day 1, but I don't think they are being truthful about Sarah Padin. I think time is of essence and they want
to drag the truth about Ms.Padin out to keep their ratings up. I am

polls cannot be correct!

This election is not about MCStupid and his sleazy mind. McCain has proved that he has no family values when he dated other women while still married to his first wife. It proves that he has a low-down mind.

Interesting that McCain doesn't have this ad listed on his website. He wants to run it (in key states), but it seems like he's ashamed of it.

As he should be.

Herman Choy   September 9th, 2008 7:45 pm ET

How about doing a fact finding on the book "THE CASE AGAINST BARACK OBAMA, by Freddoso.
I'd love to verify those facts on TV since a fact finding is being
done on Sarah Palin.

The legislation Obama had backed in Illinois went so far as to call for sexually transmitted disease prevention to be taught in kindergarten.

McCain/Palin 08

Darren   September 9th, 2008 7:45 pm ET

This is ridiculous. Before we actually get into the campaign, the media is going to have to call out the McCain campaign on their lies. Not to do so before talking actual issues, is about like allowing Sarah Palin to run without dribbling the basketball, and then wondering why Obama's defense isn't up to par.

Allowing the McCain camp to openly lie can be as damaging to this country as anything al qaeda has done.

NC Dem   September 9th, 2008 7:43 pm ET

The real question is, why does John McCain think teaching children to protect themselves from pedophiles is a bad thing?

Linda K.   September 9th, 2008 7:42 pm ET

This ad is a lie meant to create fear. Obama is the one who will prevent this society's fall into idiocracy. He has pledged to boost education at the preschool level all the way through to college, making higher education more affordable. Depend on the GOP to take an excellent platform and turn it into something dirty.

Andrew   September 9th, 2008 7:42 pm ET

You people are so funny.....you think McCain is low? Have you seen what Biden has said lately??? Oh but you support someone who voted for three times that if a live baby is born as a result of a botched abortion that the baby is to be left to die.

What are you folks think? I think you all have it backwards as far as who is disgusting!

robert   September 9th, 2008 7:42 pm ET

Dear CNN, I appreciate your coverage of the election. It is a truly pivotal and generational election. I have been following the election coverage quite closely and have noted that Obama has a mostly positive, thoughtful, and honest message. McCain has been mostly negative and simplistic with many instances of pandering. I feel that it is unfair that they are usually lumped together as both being negative. I give for evidence this speech I just watched. It is Obama speaking about education.
I gave the URL in my last comment but apparently the monitor does not allow that. Sufficed to say, if you look for it you will find it. I urge viewers to watch the complete version; things said in speeches are often taken out of context. He does mention McCain unfavorably once, after all it is a campaign, but it is not personal and it is a very small part of his presentation, which focuses mostly on vision and responsibility.
Thank You

Dan, Maryland   September 9th, 2008 7:42 pm ET

Low down dirty politics – same old GOP just a different candidate...

Time for this country to get out of the gutter and get back to respectability at home and abroad. I am so sick of gutter politics, if only McCain stuck to his word and had a campaign about the issues he might have still had my respect....I had admiration for the McCain of 2000. I didn't agree with him on some issues, but I truly admired him. It's amazing what a difference eight long Bush years can make. Respect and admiration are no longer what McCain seeks. He'll say and do anything to win. He says he won't lose a war for an election....all he's lost his dignity.

Jawinka Smith   September 9th, 2008 7:41 pm ET

i have come to the conclusion that Obama will not win.

Why?

Because all of his supporters write the trashiest, most slanderous comments I have ever seen on the Internet. All talk. Just like their candidate.

Back to reality. Of the 50 states, Alaska ranks No. 1 in taxes per resident and No. 1 in spending per resident. Its tax burden per resident is 2 1/2 times the national average; its spending, more than double. The trick is that Alaska's government spends money on its own citizens and taxes the rest of us to pay for it. Although Palin, like McCain, talks about liberating ourselves from dependence on foreign oil, there is no evidence that being dependent on Alaskan oil would be any more pleasant to the pocketbook.

Alaska is, in essence, an adjunct member of OPEC. It has four different taxes on oil, which produce more than 89% of the state's unrestricted revenue. On average, three-quarters of the value of a barrel of oil is taken by the state government before that oil is permitted to leave the state. Alaska residents each get a yearly check for about $2,000 from oil revenues, plus an additional $1,200 pushed through by Palin last year to take advantage of rising oil prices. Any sympathy the governor of Alaska expresses for folks in the lower 48 who are suffering from high gas prices or can't afford to heat their homes is strictly crocodile tears.

As if it couldn't support itself, Alaska also ranks No. 1, year after year, in money it sucks in from Washington. In 2005 (the most recent figures), according to the Tax Foundation, Alaska ranked 18th in federal taxes paid per resident ($5,434) but first in federal spending received per resident ($13,950). Its ratio of federal spending received to federal taxes paid ranks third among the 50 states, and in the absolute amount it receives from Washington over and above the amount it sends to Washington, Alaska ranks No. 1.

This McCain ad is disgusting. Both my daughter and granddaughter were involved with a program of appropriate and inappropriate touching. With all the children involved, they were all aware of the fact that the child has done nothing wrong and that they needed to say NO and to tell an adult.

I know of two cases where children told their friends, they went together to their teacher and a pedophile was taken off the streets.

If McCain/Palin don't believe in trying to protect young vulnerable children from pedophiles or older chilren from the possiblity of life threatening AIDS and STDs they should just come out and say it.

All these two do is attack: what is their alternative????

TW   September 9th, 2008 7:40 pm ET

Here's the deal -

We really messed up in '04 – collectively it was a very childish decision to re-elect George W Bush. As a result, being the big child that we are, we are now in 'time-out' – losing our jobs, losing our homes, can't afford gas, etc....

This year we once again have to decide between voting like adults or voting like children – the same spoiled, ignorant children that have gone completely against our best interests in route to serving this country up on a plate to the wealthy (oh, yes, they are gdoing very well). Right now, the GOP thinks we are still children, this is obvious in the way they have rolled out the bald-faced lie campaign.

Fool us thrice?

We are a nation of sheep. I guess Rush limbaugh and his ditto heads have us figured out. A week ago America was introduced to Sarah Palin via a scripted speech written by a former Bush speechwriter. And I must say she played her part very well. Based on this performance there are many people that now believe she is qualified to be president. The truth of the matter is those were not her words and she is the least known of all the candidates. I would not object to Mcain or Obama for president but to give the American public less that 2 months to get to know Palin strikes me as poltical trickery. I will not vote for Mccain at this point because this decision is so ridiculous I have lost faith in the man. This nonsense is so foolish, Palin is the focal point of the election and not the Man that will shape our country for years to come. I love my country very much but i am disgusted by our politicians... all of them. They are a despicable bunch of manipulative people who's only agenda is power , not the best interests of this country. Sarah Palin best candidate the repulicans could find or the candidate the public can't get to know in 56 days . I say the latter. And we are actually considering allowing this stupidity to become real. God Bless America... we need your help

Values? Mccain had flip flopped on most things he stood for against his party, the guy is empty. Obama is honorable as well.

McCaim is an old firt that doesn't really know his head from his toes.Palin is bailing him out of disgrace and she is lying about a bridge to know where.

Come on already.

Mindy Chatsworth, California   September 9th, 2008 7:26 pm ET

This is going to really get ugly as we get closer to election day. McCain and company are already trotting out more trash and vile attacks on Obama. Surprise, surprise. It's really the only way the Republicans can hope to win this election. Anything to distract the American people from the truly horrific state of the economy. But I don't think it will work, because when the average working person wakes up every morning, their overwhelming struggle just to survive right now, will be a potent reminder.

We can't afford to let ourselves be manipulated by fear and smear tactics. This country is in desperate straits and million of people are suffering. We have to keep our eye on the issues and above all, the truth.

mary   September 9th, 2008 7:26 pm ET

MCCAIN AND PALIN ARE EXPERTS AT ATTACK ADS. THAT GOES TO SHOW YOU HOW MEAN THEY CAN BE WHEN THEY DO NOT GET THEIR WAY. I AM VOTING FOR OBAMA/BIDEN. ANYONE WHO CHEATS ON HIS WIFE HAS NO INTEGRITY AND IS UNSTABLE TO LEAD HIS COUNTRY. AS FAR AS WE KNOW, DID PALIN CHEAT ON HER HUSBAND.

OBAMA/BIDEN 2008 ALL THE WAY

Did Obama just call Sarah Palin a PIG???????????

Where the heck is the media outrage for this?

Xavier   September 9th, 2008 7:25 pm ET

I am a 14 year teacher in Texas and know from personal experience that the republican party hasnt done spit for education. Bush spoke all this garbage about no child left behind, and then didnt even fund his own idea. McCain raised a ruckus when Biden made a comment about special needs children. Well, Republicans I am sory to say havent done squat for special education kids either. I have seen special education parents have to sue the state of Texas to get basic needs for their children. During the Bill CLinton years this was never the case. Palin and McCain talk of this garbage about how they care aboutr education, but come up empty when it comes to actual actions. Palin;s state of Alaska has a horrible drop out rate. That should tell you all you need to know of where she places education on the importance meeter. I feel so much shame when I hear these maverick phonies lie and lie and lie. Are these the two role models we want our children to look up too?

Pat Riot   September 9th, 2008 7:24 pm ET

I think the point is that federal government shouldn't have a say in the affairs of our sovereign states. If the schools in a state are poor then let them tax and regulate the way their resident's see fit. It really all comes down to the efforts of the parents and the local communities. Our Republic is too large to be run by a select group of beauracrats in D.C.

Independent with indigestion   September 9th, 2008 7:24 pm ET

When these two guys won their nominations, I was hopeful we'd actually have a substantive, respectful campaign for once. I've been disappointed with Obama, but McCain has gone so far into the gutter with this one, he's lost my vote and any remaining respect I had for him. This is Willie Horton 2008, and to be expected from Bush-Rove politicians. I just can't believe McCain has become one.

milo   September 9th, 2008 7:24 pm ET

Someone took the words right out of my mouth – this ad IS sad, hateful, pathetic, and desperate.

ts   September 9th, 2008 7:24 pm ET

For everyone that thinks this is a "great" ad, fine, you can have all of the sexual predators in the U.S. live in your house. While we are at it, McCain have all of them live in his numerous houses. In some states you still are not notified when a sexual predator moves into your area. You have to search it online to find out.

This bill was to teach young kids the difference between a good touch and bad touch. And lets face it, some kids don't teach this to their kids. Kids are getting sexually active earlier. That is a fact.

McCain has no shame, no values, is not worthy of a vote and is down right stupid. Shame on him!!!!

JB   September 9th, 2008 7:24 pm ET

Who's another IL senator that ran for president prior to completing his first term in congress? I guess we'd still have slavery if we voted the way some of you out there are thinking... although I think some those same people would have liked that :-( If you vote purely on policy, I can't believe anyone would be voting for McCain...

Larry   September 9th, 2008 7:24 pm ET

Please. Research for yourself Dems. Find ONE other thing Obama has done in the education arena. One.

janine   September 9th, 2008 7:23 pm ET

McCain/Palin are so desperate. They continue to tell lies like no one can google anything they say. We're not all stupid.

Anonymous   September 9th, 2008 7:22 pm ET

"Why does noone ever bring up Carol McCain? "

Because Carol and John are still friends and Carol would most likely support John McCain in any attacks.

Similar reason why the Keating 5 scandal isn't brought up because FOUR of the five were DEMOCRATS and the other person besides McCain found not guilty was John Glen (D) and Glen (D) would stick up for John McCain.

I welcome more truth in this race but all we get are half truths and attacks.

You Dems do it so much better than the GOP does. Problem is those 'stupid' Americans can see what these attacks against the Palin ticket are (lying and half truths by the Dems are NOT better than any any lies the GOP ever told)

pa.joe   September 9th, 2008 7:22 pm ET

McCain supports vouchers.
Vouchers take money from public schools and gives it to rich kids parents to help pay for private schools.
Vouchers aren't nearly enough to pay all the expense for a private school.
That's why the poor even with vouchers can't afford private schools.
It's like another tax break for the wealthy.
This is much like McCain health insurance plan where he wants to give folks a $5000 tax credit to buy health insurance.
A $5000 tax credit equals about $1000 less tax paid for the year.
That $1000 divided by 52 equals $19.32 a week more in your paycheck.
$1000 won't buy 1 months health insurance for a family.
But it will put $1000 in the hands of the wealthy who can already afford to buy their own insurance.
McCain/Palin represent the rich but they hope the rest of us can't add.

Wayne   September 9th, 2008 7:22 pm ET

Palin's daughter is pregnant. Obamas daughters are not. I think we know who is the better parent.

Bob   September 9th, 2008 7:21 pm ET

Good grief! Another example of a "respectful" campaign from McCain.

Wayne   September 9th, 2008 7:21 pm ET

Now I know the problem with America. Its not Bush, it's the incompetent and ignorant American voter quite literally voting for their very own demise. This would be hilarious if I wasnt also American.

McCain=Karma. He is precisely what we Americans deserve. He is the destruction from within. We killed 100,000+ Iraqis for NOTHING. Yes. We deserve what we will get with McCain and Palin. Extension of Bush policies will certainly put a lid on the American dream.

Mrs. Independent   September 9th, 2008 7:20 pm ET

The republicans are disgusting this election year. It amazes me how repulsive and desperate they are. This ad is so untrue and mischaracterizing. Maybe if Sarah Palin's had taught her daughter about sex education, then she would not be the situation she's in.
HYPOCRISY IS ALL THE GOP ABOUT, THEY PREACH ABOUT MORALITY AND VALUES, BUT THEY DON'T LIVE BY THEM.

TONY   September 9th, 2008 7:19 pm ET

John McCain has lost any honor I ever had for him....what a discusting ad! I will be voting for Obama. Sorry John, you just lost me. . .

Nathan   September 9th, 2008 7:18 pm ET

McCain's convention speech had convinced me that he would be a respectful president. Now I'm at a lost for words. I'll just have to pray to God that McCain doesn't win. I don't know if I can handle a President who will attempt to take a law meant to protect children from peodiphiles and warping it.

wow. Turning an stance to educate children against sexual predators into a negative education stunt for the GOP. And someone actually said McCain is an honorable man? You are judged by your actions sir.

McCain has done more against educational programs than anyone else running for office in this race. If Obama has done nothing then what is worse? Nothing or fighting against education?

John McCain...

Against veteran benefits
Against universal healthcare
Against educational benefits
Not educated on the economy

Not right for this country

Obama/Biden...no experience on a high level, thats what we should worry about.

Apollonia Creed   September 9th, 2008 7:17 pm ET

Why isn't there a head line about the Obama campaign response to this ad? But there is a headline about the McCain's campaign response to Joe Biden's clearly appropriate remarks about special needs children and stem cell research?????

Cindy   September 9th, 2008 7:17 pm ET

John McCain has lost all honor. He's lost all control of his campaign.

Are you proud of this one, too, Senator McCain? Do you have any idea what you look like these days? You should quit. Right now, it looks like you would rather win an election than save your honor.

David   September 9th, 2008 7:16 pm ET

Come on guy's, is it the moderators job to remove as many Republican responses as they can??? Let one of my posts go through please!

McCain is right. Obama likes the public school monopoly. We need competition in our schools. We need to be able to have our kids go to the school of our choice.

Even CNN's Roland Martin says Obama is wrong on this!

Vote McCain/Palin 08.

Sylvia   September 9th, 2008 7:16 pm ET

I see desperation in Mccain's camp. They will lie, cheat, and now, a perverted dirty old man. Palin, on the other hand, knows so well about abstinence, that sex education is not necessary. As a responsible parent, we should be teaching our children about the bird and the bees. If we don't, we will have babies having babies, or children victimized by predators.

I cannot believe McCain is running an ad that completely undermines sex education to our children. I cannot believe this.

Dmitriy   September 9th, 2008 7:16 pm ET

Obama will teach our pre-K kids sex ed. Nice. Now that's a change you can believe in.

Jsdc007   September 9th, 2008 7:15 pm ET

McCain is showing us that he's a sleazy liar, no better than Karl Rove. And to think that I once considered voting for this empty shell of a man. McCain believes its his turn now, that this is his last shot at the presidency (I doubt if he can run at 76 if he loses this year) and will do or say anything to win. Perhaps, if McCain were taught sex ed as a child, he wouldn't have turned into a nasty, philandering brute of a man who after cheating on his wife with countless women, married the richest one. Perhaps, if his running mate had botherd to teach her own daughter sex ed., young Bristol wouldn't be knocked up at 17.

"good touch/bad touch"
"go to a teacher, cop, or parent and tell"

Again, more LIES from the McCain camp.

How dare yo say that how do you expect us Republicans to sleep with anyone if you educate them about good and bad touches before we can get our hands on them? Protecting children is such a liberal stance! It's time to drill them for oil

I'm not sure where these "McCain and Palin are liars" thing came from. Check Factcheck.org. They are anything but liars. Both parties are equally guilty in spinning the truth in their favor. That is just an unfortunate side of politics that comes with any presidential race. Let's put this bickering aside. Conservatives are afraid of socialism and liberals are afraid of fascism. Vote your beliefs but stop criticizing the candidates. The world isn't going to end either way it may just become more uncomfortable for the losing side.

The McCain/Palin ’super-hero-agents-of-change' shtick is not working for me. Obama offers answers for serious issues that are important to today's voters, McCain answers with attacks on Obama. Where are McCain's answers? I want to hear what McCain’s changes will be. So far the media is requiring very little of McCain and Palin when it comes to the issues.

Marie   September 9th, 2008 7:05 pm ET

Just one more article talking BAD about the other side.

Boy, I am so sick of hearing about what the candidates say their opponents have or haven't done. I think we need a NEW RULE - candidates cannot talk about anyone but themselves. As far as I am concerned... we should put bags over their heads and distort their voices and start listening to the ISSUES!

I am beginning to believe that the person who digs up the most dirt, wins!

Black, white, male, female, kids with pregnancies, kids with disabilities, whatever- The candidate should be chosen based on their stand on the issues - the war in Iraq, the economy, the environment, immigration, stem-cell rescue - to name a few!

I think they all need to "clean up their act." How about a little integrity. Time for a new "talk" and a new "walk."

McCain- I can appreciate your service to this country, but for me, it will take a lot more than that for you to get my vote! You say COUNTRY FIRST, well then start HERE - PERIOD!

So Obama explains his dedication to improving education.

Then McCain explains his view.

Oops, that would be a reasonable response. But, Nope, Ol' McCain / Palin decide to toss a dagger or two in response.

What that tells me is McCain HAS NO PLAN TO IMPROVE EDUCATION!

But, then, why should he? McCain hasn't thought about it in nearly 3 decades in Washington. Why would he start now?

Kick the all talk McCain express to the side of the road. We need to move our nation forward.

Read Obama's plan on Education – It is actually quite reasonable and takes the best of both right and left ideas into account. I was very impressed.

They turn and twist every word around to favor them and make themselves look good and kind and Obama look like he's not patriotic, he's inexperienced[Palin has SO MUCH MORE experience] and that McBush is the ONLY MAN that is worth running for president. Do they think she's some kind of a rock star or something? Is she better than Biden? Give me a break! She flip flops better than old pasty face! She knows full well that SHE DID FAVOR THE BRIDGE TO NOWHERE. She's lied about it and many more things over and over. Why is the country putting her up on a pedestal? Are people so forgetful or stupid as to think that the McBusg/Palin ticket wont bring change, just more of the same bull-- we've seen over the last 8 years? You already knew who you were voting for before the election season began. Stop kidding yourself and being less than forthright with everyone else. Let's be honest! You planned to vote for anyone running against Obama in the Democratic Primary and anyone running against Obama in the National Election. We all can take one thing from this
historical year. The Republicans could have SELECTED anyone and I mean SELECTED to run against Obama because this great country is still not open minded enough to have an African American or Black President. People like you make are country what it is today. Sara Palin is a joke and gives Americans an excuse and way of escape to hide behind there personal immoral & ignorant views expressed above. One thing is for sure! America has not changed and will not change. How in God's name can McCain/Palin make such a claim about Obama? It is obscene. I knew it was a lie before I checked it out, but I was pleased to know that I was absolutely right.

These people are ready to say or do anything to get elected. What they count on is that the People are either too stupid to check out what they say or so much more interested in Christian Right principles that they won't want to know whether it is true or not.

Hey, it worked for Bush/Cheney! I'm sure that Rove is coaching them, we know that Bush/Cheney are! Wake up, WE, the People, before it is too late. I've been a teacher for 17 years. I taught kindergarten for three years and was required by my district to teach "Good Touch, Bad Touch". It clearly gives children an understanding of how others can and unfortunately may take advantage of them and how to recognize when someone is doing so. My daughter is 5 and I have taught her much of what I taught my students and the importance of always talking to her parents if she feels something bad has happened. As an educator, I am proud of Barack backing knowledge over ignorance. John McCain has crossed a line that puts him squarely in the gutter.

David   September 9th, 2008 7:01 pm ET

I am ashamed of McCain and nasty campaign smears. Well Presidential campaign are nasty but this is going to something. McCain and Rupublic "Enough", "Enough of your dirty tricks, Enough o the smears, Enough of the baseless argument – this is country need honest, truthful and responsible leaders" .

Obama, this is the time to reinforce your word ' Enough". sharpen it so it is clear, and strong such that the trepublic lies cannot bend it or modify or ride on it because the McCAIN.Palin – Bush/Cheney should have a free ride.

RyanD.   September 9th, 2008 7:01 pm ET

MCCAIN IS A SCARY CANDIDATE. PTSD WILL CAUSE YOU TO DO RASH THINGS AND MAKE POOR DECISIONS.

Obamacan/McCant   September 9th, 2008 7:01 pm ET

how sad this country is...so filled with ignorance they can see they are hurting. how can we believe anything coming from McCain/Palin camp...in my heart she gives some people the excuse to not vote for Obama not because of his policy but because he is Black. this is clearly not an election about the issues, it is about personality...Bush had a great personality when he was running too.

Ed30041   September 9th, 2008 7:01 pm ET

I didn't think McCain would stoop so low. McCain's tactics are disgusting! Although a candidate should be held accountable for their past words, positions, and actions, to take these words totally out of context is unconscionable, disgusting. While Obama is providing the voters with a vision of the future, McCain is resorting to slanderous rhetoric. I guess this is because McCain doesn't have a vision for the future that he wants to share with the voters. Put the issues and positions on the table and stop the slanderous rhetoric!

He Need Anger Management   September 9th, 2008 7:00 pm ET

John can't have our country for the simple reason that we'll have to turn our weapons over to him. He's a hotheaded me-first, sleazebag who would like nothing more than to start 2 or 3 more wars.

We need someone with a level head.

Who are these people funning McCain's campaign? All white, young, they look like junior executives. One thing for sure: they're not afraid to jump down into the gutter. It's not about "issues" they say. Anything to win.

It should be an interesting 57 more days.

Dee   September 9th, 2008 7:00 pm ET

I think it's sad. Millions of dollars, a lot of time and effort – all spent on bashing each other or defending themselves. Where's the issues? Why can't ONE of them step up and 'rise above' what we typically see from candidates?

Why can't one lead by example – refuse to smear, refuse to hit below the belt? What message (again) are we sending to American citizens, children and people across the world? That we can't have an election without making it something akin to what would be on the front page of the National Enquirer?

It's sad. In my opinion, McCain is stooping lower in his attacks, but in a time we need Americans to 'step up' and lead – any amount of 'stoop' is unacceptable.

eric   September 9th, 2008 7:00 pm ET

i can't stand john mccain and his campaign. i can hardly tolerate the ignorance of the voters that back him.

why are you voting for a man who is accredited for his duty at war?
we are a nation that wants peace.
we are a nation that wants a strong economy.
we are a nation wants to be respected not because of our missiles, but by taking lead on tough issues.

vote for a man that knows what direction we need to go forward towards. vote for obama

So I guess McCain opposes helping little kids stay away from child molesters? Unbelievable.

Ron L   September 9th, 2008 6:59 pm ET

This is a PERFECT EXAMPLE of what is wrong with our political system, it shows how mean spirited the Republican Party is and how much Senator McCain has devolved. Do you REALLY think the John McCain of 2000 would participate in such trash!!
ANYBODY who doesn't find this sickening needs to take a second look at themselves!!
Why is it OK say this about Obama, but it would be wrong to say l Gov. Palins pregnant 17 year old daughter is living proof that her abstainence only policy is a failure?? She could not even convince her own daughter?? I mean really THINK ABOUT IT!!!

TexasVet   September 9th, 2008 6:58 pm ET

John McCain is one sick OLD DOG. He deserved everything Dubya threw at him in 2000, and then some.

John McCain has no honor. Forget about Sarah Palin – it's not about her. She'll be a distant memory by Christmas, apart from her Oprah interview on her way back to Alaska.

It's about the top half of the ticket stooping to lies, while counting on the stupidity of the electorate to make the same mistake it did in 2004. By the way, the ad is subliminally racist – anyone else see what I see?

Hillary 2012   September 9th, 2008 6:58 pm ET

Too late Obama

Jessica Ferry   September 9th, 2008 6:58 pm ET

What scares me about Palin is her reigniting the culture wars just when America was starting to at least appear to move beyond that ugly era. There is no place in Washington for someone who is so overtly religious about her politics, particularly when she has such extremist positions. If a politician actually believes that a war is God's will...specifically she said that the war effort in Iraq is "from God"...he/she should not say that out loud. It sounds, for lack of a better way of putting it, what someone in the middle east would say about the war against America. While my personal faith is deep, I DO NOT believe God involves him/herself in wars nor favors one group over another. We are fighting that type of extremism, not trying to emulate it!!!!

John McCain AND Sarah Palin have something Obama does not.......CHARACTER and INTEGRITY. They will win because the American people are smarter than you obama.

Robert V. Simpson   September 9th, 2008 6:55 pm ET

Senator McCain never really meant it when he and his wife promised to run a clean campaign.

He has become downright disingenuous with his attempt to steal the change mantra and talking about the democrats stance on sex education. If Republicans were not so naive as to just talk about abstinence and pander to the religious right maybe teen pregnancies would be reduced.

The straight talker has turned into the forked tongue maverick and he should be ashamed. I guess to his campaign; winning is everything.

Palin for a number of years( since 1992) and list a lot of dispictable things about her and noone is saying anything about. There is a lot of press about how excited the right wing is about Gov. Palin but nothing negative. It has to come out or there is a disservice being done to the American people. LIES

Ken, LA California   September 9th, 2008 6:53 pm ET

Obama has contributed a lot personaly to education first by being a constutional law lecturer at the university for ten years, John MaCcain was a complete flop at the royal academy, he is not interested in giving our kids education, he wants them to join the military, become a pow, the marry a rich blonde wife, that is not education, that is rolling the dice on our children. When my kids grow up I would like them to be like Obama no MacCwar.

Has anyone been reading the news lately or seeing any stats? Kids are becoming sexually active earlier and earlier and just because we adults want to turn a blind eye to it, doesn't mean it's not happening.

Anyone read what former Mayor of New York City – Ed Koch had to say about Sara Palin. Direct quote below:

"Sara Palin is a plucky, exciting candidate, but when her record is examined, she fails miserably with respect to her views on the domestic issues that are so important to the people of the U.S., and to me. Frankly, it would SCARE me if she were to succeed John McCain in the Presidency."

People are starting to examine her record it's only a matter of time before the pitbulls lipstick comes off and we really see who were dealing with.

bea   September 9th, 2008 6:51 pm ET

Why are we having this conversation. The bottom line is the bill was created to protect and help children understand what is appropreate and what is not. Not all parents teach their children about sex let alone how to protect themselves against the sick people who prey on the small, weak and helpless. Shame on McCain!

Veterans 4 Obama   September 9th, 2008 6:51 pm ET

Your right, John McCain does not understand.

He does not understand that it takes 5 million to be rich?
He does not understand that most Americans don't own 8 houses.
He does not understand how to support Veterans' (look at his voting record.)
He does not understand that he actually does have to show up for work to make a difference. (He holds the #1 spot for missed votes.)
He does not understand that women are smart enough to see right through his VP choice.
He does not understand world politics, bomb bomb Iran.
He does not understand issues, because all he really does is attack.

John McCain does not understand America...period!!!

Learning about sex before being naked...might have helped Palin's daughter. I think Obama had quite a bit of good judgement in this regard, and Palin/McCain clearly did not. The proof is in the children, and how they raised them.

Obviously Obama is the better Parent, Politician, better for schools and as such, better american and better President.

SteveJJ   September 9th, 2008 6:50 pm ET

Donna   September 9th, 2008 6:49 pm ET

The McCain/Palin campaign has gone from dishonest to despicable.

Patrick of Canton, Ohio   September 9th, 2008 6:49 pm ET

Perhaps kids wouldn't be having sex so much these days, spreading STDs, and growing the teen pregnancy demographic if you didn't tell them in kindergarten what sex was. While yea it's good to try to safeguard against sex predators and all that, simply telling kids abotu sex at an early age means they're gonna be trying to do that at an earlier age. Save the sex education for highschool, or in today's case middleschool, seems that's when most of the kids start these days.

As for the attack on Obama, pretty effective as a joke, but then again Obama's candidacy is a joke anyways. As for John McCain, I'd like to see what he's put out in terms of education, that be fairly interesting to learn as opposed to hearing about him complain about Obama all day long.

Forget both candidates, vote third party, anyone but two criminals who both have ties to corruption scandals.

That is part of the NO BIG GOVERNMENT MCCAIN is touting,
but sneakily. Very sneaky in hiding what his "remarks" and "standards"
for America, really mean!!!! TRUE! THIS IS TRUE. All the old folks

is available to all America's children? Then get up off your a--

How the heck does McCain get away with these lies!! I know Republicans are stupid enough to believe anything they are told, but independents should know better.

It's sort of like saying McCain is pro-torture because he participated in it for years and years. With only looking at a small portion of the facts, it's true. However, you look at the entire picture and you see that it's a lie. A horrible lie. So if what I just said was a lie, then why isn't all this twisted information McCain throws out there not a lie too?

Man, that did it. You, McCain, just lost my vote. You are disgusting for approving it.

James   September 9th, 2008 6:48 pm ET

John McCain is sleaze to allow this type of mischaracterization to be done. This should be plenty of evidence along with his adulturous past, his attempt to influence the Keating case by his presence as a sitting senator, and his cozying up to influences in his party who accused him of having a black love child that McCain only has situational morals, ethics, and honor.

This is a truely base attempt to start a culture war that does not lift the political dialog or address the issues that affect people's lives.

It is truely amazing that the people who think they are the base of the republican party (low and middle income blue collar, church going whites) continue to think that voting the same type of people into office is going to give them a different result.

You're anti choice or pro life?

You just had a Republican President for 8 years, a Republican Congress for 6 years, and a moderate to conservative court for that entire time.

I dont' remember any hard republican push to overturn Roe v. Wade.

Every four years they try to get the so called "base" to turn out to vote for prolife, pro gun, less government, anti gay presidents and representatives and they never deliver.

You are all being used.

The sad part is you don't even care as long as someone you think you can't stand doesn't win. What is that phrase about cutting off your nose to spite your face?

And now you're considering voting in someone more hawkish than Bush to send your sons and daughters off to fight thier corporate wars for the sake of patriotism?

McCain was just in clips about expanding markets for American products. Wake up. He was talking about CAFTA without naming it. One of his first trips as a candidate was to Columbia, a nation one of his staffers is a lobbiest for. Say goodbye to more American jobs.

When are you all going to wake up and realize that the true base of the republican party really does have an income of several hundred thousand dallors to several million dallors. Look at his tax cut proposal.

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting different results

katiec   September 9th, 2008 6:47 pm ET

Facts, no lies, is what counts! McCain/Palin are liars.

John Smith   September 9th, 2008 6:46 pm ET

If the America people are as wise or intelligent as the British or French people, they should know that Obama should NOT be the one working so hard to win their votes.

Just imagine, as an American, waking up after election day to KNOW that McCain-Palin are your new leaders for the next 4-8 years:

1. How can you ever forgive yourself for such a fatal mistake?

2. What will happen to your beloved Constitution?

3. Bush had a father who was a President, yet look at where America is after 8 years. Did the Repubicans deliver what they promised? Will they deliver for the next 4-8 years or clean up their own mess?

4. What would you live to tell your children about this wonderful opportunity for change? Was it "racially or simply party motivated? And is it really worth the RISk you took? Think, think, and think again– God is an intelligent, not an EMOTIONAL ....!

The Nightingale Sings in Berkley Square   September 9th, 2008 6:44 pm ET

Obama is risky and I just don't trust a man who was in the senate for 143 days and decided that he wanted to be the president. he hasn't done anything in his job and is risky.

McCain is an honorable man and a man who will protect our country and our values.

I see Obama is not ready and even Joe Biden said that obama was not ready. Hillary said Obama lacks the experience for the job.

Heavy comments by the lions of the Democratic Party.

Let's support the Republican ticket all the way to the White House.
