McCain camp says Biden 'sunk to a new low'

Was Biden referencing Palin in his comments about stem cell research?
Was Biden referencing Palin in his comments about stem cell research?

(CNN) - John McCain's campaign hit back hard at Joe Biden Tuesday after the Democratic VP candidate appeared to suggest Republicans who do not support stem cell research - like GOP VP candidate Sarah Palin - are lacking in their support of children with disabilities.

“Barack Obama’s running mate sunk to a new low today launching an offensive debate over who cares more about special needs children," McCain-Palin spokesman Ben Porritt said. "Playing politics with this issue is disturbing and indicative of a desperate campaign."

The sharp response, indicative of the increasingly heated rhetoric from both presidential campaigns as the election enters the final stretch, came shortly after Biden said advocates for people with disabilities should support stem cell research.

Biden did not mention Palin - the mother of a baby with Down syndrome, and someone who has said she will be a “friend and advocate in the White House" to parents of children with disabilities - but seemed to direct a question to her.

Election Center: Where the candidates stand on stem cell research

“I hear all this talk about how the Republicans are going to work in dealing with parents who have both the joy…and the difficulty of raising a child who has a developmental disability, who were born with a birth defect,” he said. “Well, guess what folks? If you care about it, why don't you support stem cell research?”

Biden spokesman David Wade insisted Tuesday the Delaware senator's comments were not directed at Palin.

"This is a clash of policies, not a clash of personalities," Wade said. "We've heard not a dime's worth of difference between the McCain-Palin ticket and the Bush Administration on medical breakthroughs that millions of parents and doctors believe could save lives and transform the quality of life for countless Americans."

ok, this is definitely being blown out of proportion. Biden is absolutely right about that statement and I am not being biased on that. If you want to HELP these special needs children then wouldn't it be obviously to INVEST money into things that might bring about cures to the causes. I swear people just take thing out of context to much, and it shows how closed minded people have become.

It is a legitimate concern for all the children with disabilities and many other health issues.

Palin made the statement she would be a "representative" in the White House for parents of children with disabilities and yet cut funding in her state by near 60% for children with disabilities.

THAT IS HOW SHE WILL REPRESENT YOU.

The only thing different about McCain from Bush is he is going to get done what Bush didn't get done. God Help Us All!!

If McCain/Palin can't stand the heat, they need to get out of the kitchen.

Don't hit first, if you can't take a punch.

    The Republicans are hilarious.

He got under their skin with that comment. It is still not as worse as McCain saying Obama is choosing winning a political campaign over a war.

Sara Palin just became a mother of down syndrome child few month ago. I wonder if Mrs. Palin knows what entails raising special need child YET.

But that is not what bothers me the most about this woman. What I am so shocked and bothered about this woman as nations vice president candidate is that she doesn't believe and acknowledge Global warming!! She doesn't thinks it's real, she thinks it's a made up story....She is soooo out of touch (still in bronze age!)

AND FOLKS, GLOBAL WARMING IS HAPPENING RIGHT IN HER BACK YARD Alaska!!. ALL SHE TO DO IS to LOOK AT THOSE MELTING GLACIERS in her own state....SHE IS EXTREMELY DUMB and out of reality!

P.S: Mr. Palin was arrested twice driving under influces (DUI). It's a crime....very irresponsible family!!!! I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY MACCAIN CHOSE PALIN. IT'S A CRAZY CHOICE.

why do the republicans cry when someone call them on their ethnics, but when they throw a punch the Dems are suppose to sit back and take and not jab back. If Palin was so much for children with special needs, why did she cut so much funding in ALaska, before she had a special needs child. Now she see that other parents before her, had to struggle, and now she want pity for hers , please give me a break.Stop the flip flopping on the issues Palin and take stand a real stand.

As Governor, she cut state aid to schools for children with disabilities by over 50%. Palin killed a bill that would SUPPORT kids with special needs.

    What a pandering hypocrite…

The McCain-Palin campaign is an absoute disgrace. Using her son as a shield against a perfectly fair and crucial question....

Do you support Stem Cell research in the fight against many medical conditions, including Down Syndrome?

That is a perfectly fair and salient question, but of course Sarah Palin isn't allowed to be asked questions, is she?

Republicans are the biggest hypocrites in the world. And Palin is an absolute joke, not to mention a bible thumper. Imagine her going head to head with Putin. He would eat her alive. McCain probably should have vetted her a little better. And yet many Americans are stupid and many will make an emotional vote instead of voting on the issues.

Bush only ran up a 409 billion dollar deficit. What can McCain and Palin do? Maybe they will completely bankrupt the nation!

What is wrong with asking why the pit bull is NOT for stem cell?

What kind of an advocate is she going to be?
