Obama tells reporters he's not worried about Pailn's popularity.

RIVERSIDE, Ohio (CNN) – Senator Barack Obama told reporters he is not concerned about the spike in enthusiasm among Republicans since Governor Sarah Palin joined the GOP ticket, or recent polls showing a dead-even race.

“My general approach throughout this process has been not to worry about today’s news or yesterday’s polls but worry about what is it where is it that I want to see the country what is it that I’m trying to accomplish,” said Obama at a press conference in Riverside, Ohio. “I know that after our convention we had a bump, after theirs they get a bump. I think that what you’re going to see settling in, is that the race is going to be very close.”

The Democratic nominee, asked whether he wished he had picked a female running mate given some polling data that indicates women are flocking to the McCain-Palin ticket, said he had no regrets.

Earlier: New CNN poll shows Obama-McCain dead even

“The notion that people are swinging back and forth in a span of a few weeks or a few days this wildly generally isn’t borne out,” said Obama. “These are the same polls that had me 20 down last summer that have swung wildly throughout this process. There is no doubt that Governor Palin has attracted a lot of attention.

“There’s no doubt the Republicans are excited, particularly the right wing of the Republican party, is excited by Governor Palin’s choice. I think that has less to do with gender than it has to do with her ideological predispositions.”

Palin, who has become a hot topic on the trail Monday, appears to be a rallying point for Democrats as well. Before Obama’s Riverside speech, the crowd chanted “no pit bulls!” — a reference to Palin’s joke at the GOP convention that the only difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull was lipstick.

Obama came to Riverside to talk education, laying out $1 billion worth of new proposals to make students in the U.S. more prepared to compete in a global economy. Some of the initiatives include more funding for charter schools, and greater investments and access to new classroom technology. The Illinois senator said the money to cover the spending would come in part from “carefully winding down the war in Iraq.”

In his remarks, Obama also hit Senator John McCain for what he said was a lack of commitment to education reform.

“He has not done one thing to truly improve the quality of public education in our country. Not one real proposal or law or initiative. Nothing,” Obama said. “Do you really believe that John McCain is going to suddenly make a difference now?”

Jack Jodell, Minneapolis, MN   September 9th, 2008 2:42 pm ET

I agree with Obama that there is nothing to worry about. For one thing, 80% of the country correctly feels we're on the wrong track. Once they see how the McCain/Palin ticket will be offering the same disastrous economic and foreign policies we've had under Bush/Cheney, there's NO WAY McCain/Palin will be elected! For another, once voters realize how dangerous it will be having Palin only a heartbeat away from the presidency, and what it would mean if she had to sit down with the likes of Putin or Ahmedinijad during a serious world or military crisis, voters will NEVER choose McCain/Palin! We Americans don't like getting beaten up repeatedly or cutting our own throats!
OBAMA/BIDEN '08!!!!

Charlene   September 9th, 2008 2:41 pm ET

Way to go Biden- call it like you see it. I am sick and tired of McCain/Palin- can't say anything because she is a woman. In the last few days, some of the things she said in her speech are untrue. She only said the first part of the sentence and then stopped and left out the true part. Well Pit Bull you better put your lipstick on because the truth is going to come out!!! No Way, No How, No McCain/Palin. Her stardom has worn off. You know when they say something is too good to be true, it probably is.

Anonymous   September 9th, 2008 2:41 pm ET

When the dust settles and the real truth comes out (like in the past about many of the SMEAR and LIES told regarding Gov Palin) Obama and his supporters will do what they do best and repeat the same old …. yawn… mantras
No more Bush….yawn….. more of the same…yawn

Obama must really think the American people ARE idiots but its clear McCain IS NOT Bush only those who wish it to be true believe it.

Don't know who I feel sorry for Obama or his supporters he mislead and gave FALSE HOPE to all these months.

Once the American people look past the wrapping on the lipstick coated pit bull/barracuda, they will see there is nothing.

Senator Obama has his eyes in the right place:

Chuck   September 9th, 2008 2:40 pm ET

The Mccain camp's response via Ben Porritt about Biden's stem cell research inquiry was so outrageous I misspelled Palin's name in my initial response. We should all still be seething over such whining by the republicans and down right ludicrist response by Poritt to a perfectly good question by Biden.

Khal Houston,Texas   September 9th, 2008 2:40 pm ET

Why worry, that "wild women" from Alaska…..is not going to be any one VP. or President….God will not let this happen. We simply can't afford to have such in the W…hite House. This goes to show you that the Repubs are willing to "scrape" the bottom of the barrel to get a candidate.

J J   September 9th, 2008 2:39 pm ET

I keep reading on these message boards on how great Biden is. I then have a question, why has he not been elected president in his many attempts?

As far as the argument that McCain has voted with Bush 95% of the time, I guess that means that he has gone against his party 5% of the time during the Bush admin. What is his percentage of going against the Republicians over his career.

Better yet with Obama's limited voting record, how often at the state or federal level has he broken with the Democrats?

No matter who makes a negative comment, the other side is going to think its unfair. Get over it.

Tom in CA   September 9th, 2008 2:39 pm ET

…just keep hammering McCain and Palin on the issues, point out their lies and don't stand down to their campaign's pissy protests. With McCain supporting Bush's policies 89% in 2006, 95% in 2007 and 100% in 2008 – do you think the elephant can change it's color by just adding lipstick?

The only change will be that Bush is in Crawford and McCain will be in the White House. The policies will remain the same.

NO WAY! NO HOW! NO MCCAIN! NO PALIN!

John McPain   September 9th, 2008 2:39 pm ET

You should be. You underestimate the stupidity and ignorance of America. You keep saying people are smarter than that and they will see the truth. LOL Really???? Take my advice and don't let the truth get in the way of a good story. Also be nice to my VP Pai(l)n bc she will be president after I croak.

Kathleen in RI   September 9th, 2008 2:39 pm ET

Someone in an earlier post made a dangerously sweeping statement that the majority of independents and women are flocking to the McCain/Palin side due to McCain's choice of VP in Palin. As a woman and an independent, I'd have to say that's probably not true. Personally, I was insulted, as a woman, that he picked Palin as his running mate. If his major purpose was to persuade independents and women to vote Republican then he was sadly mistaken. I'm sure some in these groups will be turned by the Palin pick but I thought it was a poor choice. I'd have been more impressed if he'd chosen Kay Bailey Hutchinson as his running mate. I wish the Republicans would give women and independents a little more credit than to shove an inexperienced VP candidate (who is definitely not ready to run this country) and hope we'll buy it.

I think it will be a close race but I'm pulling for Obama…he gets my vote, and I'm certain many other independents and women as well.

anonymous   September 9th, 2008 2:39 pm ET

I don't believe the polls. And I have a degree in Marketing Research!
America is not dumb enough to vote for McCain/Palin.

Charles in Cincinnati   September 9th, 2008 2:38 pm ET

Bill in Colorado said "There is no substance to the man."

I'm sure you speak from years of unique experience knowing Barack Obama personally.

You don't? Then your statement must be based simply on rumor, fear, or some other mind-control efforts on the part of the Republicans.

I don't claim to know what's in McCain's heart…I can only judge what's in his platform and his past record. And that has me convinced that he's likely to continue the downward spiral this country's been in for almost 8 years now. Enough's enough!

Janeal   September 9th, 2008 2:38 pm ET

Oh are the people polling? most people aren't. Obama doesn't need to worry when he was 4 million NEWLY REGISTERED voters. it'll be 55 million when it's time to actually vote. the polls mean nothing. they are just there for political conversation, and to give the pundits something to quabble over.

BBKing   September 9th, 2008 2:38 pm ET

Why should he worry?

The economy keeps going down the tank. We have a 407 Billion dollar deficit thanks to GW. When November comes and things have gotten even worse who will be geeting the votes, Gezzer & Gidget?

If that was the case I'd be believing that the only party that can fix the mess of the last 8 years is the party who got us in the mess.

Dennis   September 9th, 2008 2:38 pm ET

There are two months before the election. I think we'll see Obama and McCain run within a couple of percentage points of each other until the debates. I think Obama will come out ahead of McCain in the debates in the polls.

However, none of the means anything. As we saw in the primaries, the polls can be wrong, and they were wrong. It'll be a close election, just like the last two.

NG in DC   September 9th, 2008 2:38 pm ET

Obama better start worrying — because the rest of us Hillary suppoerts who have turned the corner and contributed to his campaign are really starting to wonder if he has what it takes to beat the Republic powerhitters.

Obama needs Hillary more than anything — starting with some tutoring on how to throw a punch and pulverize the other side — like she did him in the final stretch of the campaign she lost control of early on through poor strategy. Strategy is out the window now — not it's just a fight to the finish — and he needs to start fighting fast.

Farrell, Houston, Tx   September 9th, 2008 2:38 pm ET

Democrats, Republicans and others will be voting for Obama and Biden at the polls where it counts.

Donna from Colorado Springs   September 9th, 2008 2:38 pm ET

It is early, and noone should panic about the polls, but Obama NEEDS to remember what Bush did to Kerry when he didn't respond quick enough to their attacks and didn't take them serious enough. He need to keep them very close in his rear view mirror and not let things get out of hand. He needs to do something to strenghten his base. Hillary needs to get really intense with her supporters and convince them to vote for Obama. McBush is grabbing 12% of the white women right now, and I'm not sure why. We can't afford to lose another election to the republicans.

He shouldn't be. The media and as a result the American people is captivated by the "carefully created persona" of Sarah Palin. Once Americans know the truth about who she is and what she stands for. The fact that she is against many women's rights and is even more extreme in her conservativism than Bush, Americans will see her for who she is.

Obama, keep discussing the issues. Bring the issues and the platform out into the light, and force Palin to discuss her policies on various things like abortion, health care, education, the war in Iraq, etc.

I truly respect and admire McCain, as I do Obama. I think either man would be a good leader for our country. However, I don't want to have to worry for 4 years that Palin could become President. She has not shown at all that she will sacrifice her personal needs or desires for the good of the country. Obama gave up a lucrative career to serve. McCain served in the military and sacrificed a great deal. Biden gave up the cushy, rich Washington lifestyle to be a good father. What has Palin sacrificed? So far, I think her husband and children are sacrificing, but I don't see much of that from her. That is not what I want to see in a public leader.

"Nowhere Exposure" of Sarah Palin's lie about 'the bridge to nowhere' earmark that we now know she took, sought out, kept, and got the HIGHEST AVERAGE EARMARK RATIO PER RESIDENT in the entire US is what cut her Gallup numbers from 10 on Saturday to 5 on Monday to about even today. I can't imagine what happens when they find out how she charged rape victims up to $1200 for forensic kits, or how she charged the state of Alaska for her personal house.

Let me get this straight….
The Choice we have is a young, green U.S. Senator who has organized an unbelievable state to state campaign, who is eloquent and who inspires the younger generations and who has a Vice President who knows Washington D.C. better than most. This is over another Senator who is up in years and could possibly have healh issues while in office. The odds are good he will. He chooses a V.P. who is charismatic, charming, good looking but knows absolutely nothing about economics, the world order, how Washington works. Furthermore we are now learning a great deal about Sarah that should be upsetting to most ranging from caring little about the environment, is in bed with the oil industry, who advocated getting certain books out of the library, not to mention other things that soon will be coming out.
The Democrats are known as Tax and Spend Liberals
The Republicans are known as Borrow and Spend Conservatives (an oxymoron)….

Pick your poison…No matter who we get, prepare for a very very very bumpy ride. How are we going to pay for a stronger military…borrow/tax; how are we going to pay for health care: borrow/tax….We want it all with little sacrifice. Yep, get ready. Change is Coming all right….

TexasVet, nice try, but CNN explained weeks ago how the polls are adjusted for the demograhics of cell phone users. A more significant factor will be the Bradley effect. That's people who say they will vote for a black person when polled, but in the privacy of the voting booth won't. It will probably cost Obama 3-5 points in the election. So if McCain polls ahead by 2, it's probably 5-7 points in reality.

His campaign against McCain is "More of the same." Lets see, the last time we had a democratic president he downsized the military so much we ended up getting attacked within a year of him leaving office. If more of the same means my family will be safe while I take the fight to our enemies…I for the same!!!!!

It's the electoral college, stupid.

Go to fivethirtyeight and see for yourselves. Polls mean nothing to the campaigns; the electoral vote is all that matters.

Kate, Atlanta   September 9th, 2008 2:30 pm ET

Hey "media" – your polls are wrong and VERY insulting to women. We don't flock to gender, we flock to policies about real issues. Obama talks policies and issues – he will end up with the majority of women's votes. You guys just like to try to stir stuff up.

Critical View   September 9th, 2008 2:30 pm ET

Obama can never understand the mistakes he made in his VP selection. Either he is stupid or he is too arrogant. How could he have ignored Hillary Clinton? Palin has shown that she can excite republicans and Hillary supporters. John McCain’s respected character and his push for reform are more appealing than Obama’s slogan of change. The current polls have supported the above observation. Of course, Obama is worried. Why? because now the McCain-Palin ticket can capture Ohio and win in the general election.

Carolyn   September 9th, 2008 2:30 pm ET

Sue you are living in la la land and bet you are not rich either.. Obama is the best plan for the county and Hillary is not running ok

Get real! God loves the truth and I'm gonna tell it! McCain voted against vets 27 times and Obama has a 60 percent higher rating with the Disabled Vietnam Veterans.

Bye!

David   September 9th, 2008 2:30 pm ET

sorry Sally, but it is not a Republican con, it is a neo-con con. the neo-cons took over the GOP starting with the Bush Sr administration (Cheney was a big part of it then, too). So I take issue with people calling this the republican party. the neo-cons transfomed it into something that does not resemble itself anymore. Check out Ron Paul. He is the closest thing to GOP out there.

Michael   September 9th, 2008 2:29 pm ET

CM, it is clear you are a product of the British education system, which has succeeded in turning Great Britain into a second rate socialist state.Snobbery is as much a part of that system as exclusion. When you speak of the uneducated, of whom are you talking ? As William F. Buckley famously said, he would rather be governed by the first 200 names in the Boston directory than the faculty at Harvard.

Cheers, why don't you mind your own business?

The defintion of insanity: Repeating the same thing and expecting different results.

McCain/Palin is the same Bush/Cheney-do you expect a different result?

Ann   September 9th, 2008 2:29 pm ET

Why not? With the state of the economy and the endless war in Iraq, Obama should be ahead by 5-10 points in polls. Obama don't get complacent. You need to fight!

Ron teller   September 9th, 2008 2:29 pm ET

Yea Obama is scared. He knows that his record of what he has done or more importantly the lack there of in Chicago is starting to leak out. People are starting to get educated in his policies and finding out that he will be leading America down a socilist pathway.

Redistribution of the wealth is what he is trying to accomplish, why do I want to give my hard earned paycheck to someone that sits at home and makes babies so they can get more money from my pocket.

And why would I want to elect someone that has very close ties to a person that tried to blow up the pentagon?

Splurge   September 9th, 2008 2:28 pm ET

So, when he says he's not worried in public, that means he's worried but in private. And if anyone made this an election about personalities it's Barack Obama. The Obama campaign, their surrogates and paranoid fan base have played the race card like I've never seen it played before. Anyone who doesn't support him is accused of racisim from all quarters of the liberal elite. So much for moving beyond the extremist Bush mantra, "You're either with us or you're against us."

I remember when Obama stood for something different.

FL Dem   September 9th, 2008 2:28 pm ET

Obama, I love you man but you better fight back.

Democrats lose elections because they are not good at being…..well, at being corrupt stupid politicians.

Remember Obama, Americans are stupid and they like what is popular and what is the latest trend…..you have to make sure the excitement around your campaign does not diminish before November.

Several months ago there was a real spark to your (Obama) campaign….you better bring that back or these idiots are going to vote for McSame and the country is going to literally fall apart.

My pocketbook cannot handle another 4 more years of the republican policies.

A Woman In California For Obama:   September 9th, 2008 2:28 pm ET

That's right Obama. The press is "worried" about it. The majority of the country has proven they want to move forward. They are not going to elect a 72 year old man and some redneck from the backwoods of Alaska to take us back 50 years. The poll in November will be the only one that matters.

Smart people for Obama/Biden.

Rob   September 9th, 2008 2:28 pm ET

a vet   September 9th, 2008 2:28 pm ET

Obama should consider Palin as more of a diversion than anything else. It appears she is successfully diverting attention away from McCain, allowing him to run a continuous stream of negative ads in an effort to gain support.

Let Biden deal with Palin. Let Hillary deal with Palini. Let Palin's own lack of understanding of the issues deal with Palin. Yes, Governor, not all of us are hockey moms…..there are issues that need to be addressed. And yes, not all of us take yours or the media network's word as gospel (no pun intended)…..we do our homework and learn the facts as they actually happened. We know when you're telling the truth and when you're not.

Obama needs to stay focused entirely on McCain…..who before this all began said he would not run a negative campaign, yet has done so since day 1. We can all see how much McCain stands behind his word.

Being a 20-year retired veteran, I have complete confidence in McCain giving just as much support to this country's citizens as he has to those of us who have served. One look at his voting record says it all.

Central Scruitinizer   September 9th, 2008 2:28 pm ET

I Love the way Obama will give a great speech at his rallies and then he does something I think is soooooo cooooool. He takes questions from the crowd!!!! Not just fluffy little question some are pretty tough. He gives answers that seem to be coming from hyis plan. I would LOVE to see Senator Mccain try doing this. Or better yet, his new Poodle-headed Bouncing Bimbo , Farah Failing. These 2 are so afraid to face the nation and present themselves with honor and courage, to dispel all fears about their ideas???? Is it so unreasonable????He has said OK This is Sarah….. ATTACK SARAH ATTACK THE DEMOCRATS!!! GOOD GIRL GOOD GIRL ….NOW GET BACK IN YOUR CAGE AND ILL KEEP YOU SAFE FROM THOSE PESKY MEDIA TYPES AND VOTERS BACK YOU SEXISTS BACK>>>>>

nobama   September 9th, 2008 2:28 pm ET

Obama is no longer the hot shot in the news and he's unable to accept that. With Palin on the ticket, she has energized voters and will prove to be a very wise decision by McCain. Obama's continued arrogance is the reason I will NOT vote for the democratic ticket.

Ed   September 9th, 2008 2:28 pm ET

Voters are slowing starting to realize that McFragile & Piranha are not what they pretend to be. Obama has the clear advantage and you'll see polls in his favor again once more voters begin to pay attention and realize that McSame is just 4 more years of Bush. Piranha is too much of a right-wing extremest and liar for anyone with half a brain to take her serious – she's just a cheap gimmick by a desperate campaign.

Vote Obama-Biden !!

JB   September 9th, 2008 2:28 pm ET

Don't try and make this election about race Obama supporters not unless you want to talk about 90% of blacks voting for Obama. This election has everything to do with common sense. Hillary Clinton supporters for McCain/Palin 08 the best choice.

Bjorlingfan   September 9th, 2008 2:27 pm ET

Of course there's a poll surge. Palin is a fresh face…she's the first female, VP nominee for the Republican party…she's also a flash in the pan.

Look, Palin's nomination has energized the ultra-conservative base. These are people who most likely have been undecided for quite a while due to McCain's reputation as a moderate Republican, are only now throwing their support behind the ticket. Also, moderate Republicans and independents who have been supporting McCain thus far are sticking around specifically because Palin has helped energize the party as a whole.

The problem is, voter really don't know that much about her. Where she stands on policy, what her personal views are, what kind of person she is. Remember, she's new to the political scene. I think once the novelty of Sarah Palin has worn off and voters begin to see what extreme, conservative view she has, McCain-Palin will begin to lose those moderate Republicans and independents to Obama-Biden, or they might become undecided.

This is nothing more than Palin fever. As soon as voters realize how extreme her politics are, how inexperienced she is, and how dangerous it would be to have her a skin growth and one 73-year-old heartbeat away from the Presidency, they'll pull their support.

Mopy   September 9th, 2008 2:27 pm ET

Democrats Rule!   September 9th, 2008 2:27 pm ET

Why do McCain and Palin think that we are supposed to just go along with the program? Hell no! They work for us, not the other way around. They are going to re-structure Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac so that if you don't have the money to invest, you won't own a home. I thought that's what these programs were for to enable people who wouldn't ordinarily be able to get a home, to have one? The rate of foreclosure is so high because all the jobs are going overseas in spite of the big tax breaks the big companies have gotten from the Republican administration. Mark my words, Sarah and John will screw the ordinary American electorate over big time. The people have a right to know what the real deal is with all the candidates. And cut the bull about unfair treatment of this broad. She's a pitbull with lipstick remember? You want to play with the big dogs, then suck it up like a ….. well you know, don't you Sarah? How about the video that's going around on you tube about who your daughters baby daddy really is. And that he's black. Yeah, explain that one will ya?

Steve   September 9th, 2008 2:27 pm ET

Why would he need to worry? Obama has an understanding of what the people want. McCain still does not grasp that. Obama will win the election. I have never been as involved in politics as I am now. I have become a certified political junkie! It's all because we cannot elect another Bush administration into the White House. John McCain is 90% Bush administration. Why would we want that? America wake up, Obama is the only way to go. McCain will only say anything to get into office. Palin is another example of that. She said yes to the "Bridge to Nowhere" to get elected as Governor; after elected she voted against it. Perfect example of what America does not need. Another phoney tell you what you want to hear to get elected politician.

Obama/Biden are sincere people and I truly believe they can turn our country around.

Goodness, when I read and take in comments from McCain supporters, I feel a lot of hate comming from these comments.

I am one of the people who wants to have a positive insight for our kids future.

And for people to shut out the importance of education and risks everyone elses chance for a brighter future for our country and our children just frustrates me. Selfish, thoughtless people. I can't believe you people are so blinded by hate and ignorance, and what's more frustrating, McCain knows this about and is working off of it.

Arden   September 9th, 2008 2:26 pm ET

Barack: ( I do feel confortable using your first name and there is no time for formalities.) You are becoming frustrated and I can see it in your eyes. Your eyes are a mirror of your feelings. Take a big step back and remember FIRED UP, FIRED UP, FIRED UP. Keep blasting John McCain. Your fighting the BUSH/MCCAIN/PALIN camp not Sarah Palin. Women like Sarah Palin can self-distruct. Years ago it was a disgrace for a man to hide behind a women's skirt; will John "Boy" is hiding behind Palin's lisstick and worst of all she is getting away with all of her lies because she is a women and she is being allowed. As I said once before, I am 65, Irish, Catholic, and I was a cop. Women like myself do not like the Sarah Palin's of the world. Stay focused.

MAngeline   September 9th, 2008 2:26 pm ET

Neither McCain or Palin is very bright. Hopefully the American people will pay attention to the issues and not vote because someone was a war hero or a hockey mom! They might both be nice people, but Putin and his kind won't care two hoots about that.

Josh   September 9th, 2008 2:26 pm ET

This is Obama's problem, he doesn't exude a sense of urgency. There are less than 60 days to go and McCain threw this race for a loop. Obama has been on constant defense, getting into verbal sparing matching with the VP candidate. Now his donors are not ponying up and he'll have to spend the month of Sept. attending fundraisers. Even the NY Times is quoting Obama peeps who anonymously say that opting out of public financing isn't working. They call their own fundraiser's efforts "anemic" and HRC donors aren't giving. Of course Obama sent Joe Biden (???) out to reclaim HRC voters. Don't send a man to do a woman's job. HRC was the obvious choice and not Obama is being out "rock starred" by Palen and when you an empty suit like BO and have nothing of substance, once you lose your rock star appeal you are left with just the empty designer suit on your back.

Amanda   September 9th, 2008 2:26 pm ET

Wake up America! McCain is playing GAMES with you! Even Rollins, CNN's Republican strategist, said that Obama should have picked Clinton because then McCain "probably wouldn't have picked Palin". McCain knows that Palin is not QUALIFIED to be VP – he only picked her to cause a sensation and to win some votes. So much for country first!

Don't fall for his games. Notice that he's not talking about issues at all these days? Notice how he and Palin are just repeating lines from their convention speeches? All he cares about is the election. Obama cares about the issues that everyday Americans are facing.

If you let McCain play you to his side, then you deserve the nation you will get if he wins. Unfortunately, the rest of us will just have to keep suffering right along with you.

Jason from Seattle   September 9th, 2008 2:25 pm ET

He is such a fake!!! I was an undecided voter but I have seen more and more of his selfish condescedning attitude that really turns me off. He wants this election for himself not Americans.

CapoCastillo   September 9th, 2008 2:25 pm ET

I find it interesting that the GOP strategy is to make the race Obama against Palin. It certainly has provided for an interesting side show for the RNC and the following week, but there will come a point where America will ask "If Palin is what draws all the strength to the Republican ticket, then why is John McCain's name listed at the top?"

McCain still hasn't outlined a plan for the economy in any kind of specifics, nor education, the environment, or Afghanistan/Pakistan. His energy policy is pretty much 'Everything Obama said, plus offshore drilling', and he thinks somehow he'll get traction by saying 'we're /thiiiiiiiis/ close to winning the war in iraq [that we had no business starting], let's hang in there a little longer'.

Flash in the pan politics. Without substance McCain/Palin are just wasting their, and our, time.

distortions, lies are exposed. That is if the media does the
job they should.
How anyone could want another four years of Bush
policies is beyond me.
As a woman, this one really frightens me. For her to
make speaches and spew the lies she does, make
false accusations about honorable, caring opponents
makes me wonder who in the heck does she think

that.
Mccain/Palin are very dangerous people, throwing the

How does this man plan on raising the $1 Billion dollars to fund his education program? Doesn't anyone realize that as many promises as this man has made he will have to tax, tax, and more tax to pay for it. Where will the tax cuts come from? Are you going to run up the deficit even more than it already is?

J Kay - KCMO   September 9th, 2008 2:24 pm ET

He should be worried a bit. His policies are much better to women. Someone commented saying he adopted Hillary's healthcare, which Hillary truly fought for to help all of us, women of middle America. Yet, women are not coming along to support him yet. I believe we will at the end, but not yet.

Does not this tell him that he needs to work on something? He got everything he needs to appeal women. He just needs to speak to us. He just needs to explain his policies to us. I hope in the coming debates he will be able to do so, but he has not mastered the subtle communication skills. Of course, he can not meet everyone of us, and he has to do it through TV screen. He needs to think about it. I really think if he can get his message across, women will be convinced with his policies.

voter/florida   September 9th, 2008 2:21 pm ET

Why are Republicans pushing absentee ballots for voting in Florida? There have been numerous phone calls requesting voters to send in absentee ballots by mail in Florida. What is going on to make sure all voting is counted correctly?

Florida has in the past several elections not been able to account for the votes and no one seems to be concerned but this will be a problem.

People who have worked in voting across the state of Florida have mention several times, about how the voting was not been accounted for correctly.

The only surge is Palin's ignorance of all issues.

I'm sure all of you believe everthing that OBAMA says. And that's good, But be careful, because GOD works miracles. DO YOU BELIEVE THAT? And He has ALL POWER. People that have FAITH in GOD, I have FAITH in them.

Jorge   September 9th, 2008 2:21 pm ET

One of the concepts I remember from my required college course in government and politics (forty-five years ago) is that democracy depends on an educated and informed populace to work.

The results of the last two presidential elections and the recent sudden swing in the current polls, before the general electorate had had time to really learn about Palin, says volumes about the simplistic and superficial manner in which such a precious thing as a vote is squandered in today's America.

NO, he shouldn't worry. He has enough rabid lunatics soaked and drunk in their own self interest supporting him.

Obama is right not to be worried….even a dead cat bounces!

MD for Obama   September 9th, 2008 2:20 pm ET

Good for you. The Republicans are happy because they got their own rock star, messiah, whatever you want to call her and neither McCain or Palin are talking about the issues. This will tire soon enough.

He should be worried how is he going to pay for his education and economic policy. He can't raise payroll and corporate taxes for both he will bankrupt all the business's in the US. Over a billion in earmarks in such a short time he is Senator that should tell you right there he is a spender like Biden.

I think lost in the story here is that Obama laid out a plan for education.

Grandpa Johnny, Grandpa Johnny, do you have a retort that even resembles a plan? Or are we just going o continue to see you and your teleprompter puppet just continue to roll out the same old vaudeville routine day after day?

Just Wondering   September 9th, 2008 2:20 pm ET

I'd like for Obama and Biden to explain their hypocrisy in attacking Palin over the Bridge To Nowhere when they both voted in favor of it. And I would like them to explain why they voted against an amendment that would have redirected the money from the BTN to the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

NORA, FLORIDA   September 9th, 2008 2:20 pm ET

Why should he worry. The American people should be worried and rethink what they are voting for. Is it the fact that Palin is a woman or the not fact that her views are in line with theirs b/c if they vote on the issues, then Palin would not be it.

Palin continues to talk but not about issues. The media continue to pound her about her religion, which was all fair game when Obama ran against Hillary but it is not fair game now for Palin b/c she is a woman. If it is hot in the kitchen then get out!!!

daniel   September 9th, 2008 2:20 pm ET

I really don't worry about these things, I'm just trying to get the people to see what I'm trying to do……you have been trying for two years. We get it, fluff, pure and simple. Your trying to run a campaign like a movie script didn't work. In the business, your run at president is going straight to the video store, no opening for you. The blame it on Bush theory hasn't worked, but you continue to beat it to death, as will you do with Palin. Point out one of her questionable past actions and if the press was fair, they could show ten of yours….hundreds of Bidens. The answer isn't to beat mccain and Palin with a stick, the public wants you to answer all of the questions that surround your political life….answer them, not your typical uh and aw answers…It is the only gimmick you haven't tried, the truth, which is why people don't trust your gimmick of """change""" You see, hiding these probable non issues is what politicains do, ergo, no change. Whose betting on "Go home Joe" now before friday???

carolflowery   September 9th, 2008 2:19 pm ET

Is there any truth at all to the stories out there that Obama is not even legitmately eligible to run for the Presidents office, I have never heard any of the tv stations mention it, but is all over the webb, even a lawyer has filed suit about it in Philadephia and the Obama camp have been served the papers. Before anything gets heated up, this needs to be cleared up fast

Desiree   September 9th, 2008 2:19 pm ET

If he wasn't worried then why did he dispatch Sen Clinton and other women to campaign for him.

Tina   September 9th, 2008 2:19 pm ET

I look at it this way if he was not concerned about the Palin pick he would not even be talking about her at his rallys. They are worried because the American people are seeing someone who is actually for them and trying to work for us. Obama says he is not going to raise are taxes yes he is. He also said the surge would not work and he voted against it. He was wrong there and he is wrong now. Are men and women who are fighting for are country need more praise for what they are doing. They dont need to worry if are government is not going to provide for them. Go MCCAIN/PALIN

UMM NO WORRIES   September 9th, 2008 2:19 pm ET

People read the fine print in polls sometimes!!! It usually states that it's a survey of either 1000 to 2000 registered voters. And paliar, well she isn't really even an issue. She is a nonentity who is giving him a momentary rise in the polls.

Steve Rainey   September 9th, 2008 2:18 pm ET

TO MY FRIENDS THAT SUPPORT OBAMA:
Please stop the seemingly endless barrage of attacks on Sarah Palin. We are only energizing the opposition and not helping our own cause. Let the media dig up the dirt on her, which they will inevitably continue to find, for the world to see her for what she is. Barrack is staying positive. Follow his lead. Stay focused on the real issues and the significant differences on the issues. That is where our advantage lies. That is where the truth is. After the last election, we all said NEVER AGAIN. For the same reasons, it is happening again. GOP brought on Palin as a distraction and the Rovean tactics are working again. Don't fall for it, please! We will never convince the other side to think like we do. All we're doing with the petty comments is firing up people that normally wouldn't be fired up to vote in spite of you. It's a mistake. If it happens again, shame on US.

Respectfully,

He really shouldn't be worried. He is way ahead in electoral votes, and who cares about a stupid poll? I'll tell you what, it's young voters like me who will be voting for the first time that are going to sway the election heavily towards Obama. I still think and hope he and Biden will win by a landslide.

I am not worried either. I think that American people are MORE intelligent that these two moronic, anachronistic, dangerous lunatics McCain/Palin. Do we need Talibans in this country ?

A. Burke NYC   September 9th, 2008 2:17 pm ET

Fmr. NYC mayor Ed Koch endorsing Obama, an interesting read:

I have concluded that the country is safer in the hands of Barack Obama, leader of the Democratic Party and protector of the philosophy of that party. Protecting and defending the U.S. means more than defending us from foreign attacks. It includes defending the public with respect to their civil rights, civil liberties and other needs, e.g., national health insurance, the right of abortion, the continuation of Social Security, gay rights, other rights of privacy, fair progressive taxation and a host of other needs and rights.

If the vice president were ever called on to lead the country, there is no question in my mind that the experience and demonstrated judgment of Joe Biden is superior to that of Sarah Palin. Sarah Palin is a plucky, exciting candidate, but when her record is examined, she fails miserably with respect to her views on the domestic issues that are so important to the people of the U.S., and to me. Frankly, it would scare me if she were to succeed John McCain in the presidency.

beevee   September 9th, 2008 2:17 pm ET

I don't see anything wrong in what Biden said. Really if one cares about their own children with disabilities they surely must support stem cell research that has the potential to provide a cure for such develomental defects. I have not heard a single statement form the republican nominees on this issue because they may not care about it much.

C Spurgeon   September 9th, 2008 2:17 pm ET

Right on again. This country needs to stay focused on the issues facing this country and not let the far right or the far left dominate. It is time to fix things and move forward. Instead of fighting, watch debates and go vote your head…

Think it through   September 9th, 2008 2:15 pm ET

Something has changed in last few days in the Obama camp, he is going off the cuff a lot with remarks that are easily proven wrong, they seem to be shouting a lot (Biden for sure), and just seem unorganized in general. The McCain camp doesn’t need to do anything but stand back and watch the temper tantrums being displayed by Obama/Biden

I am not speculating as to why, I am just making an observation. I am looking forward to the debates. Mr. Obama may do great things for our country in a few years, however his arrogance pushed him to move too soon.

Maggie   September 9th, 2008 2:15 pm ET

You had better be worried. If you think you can cheat in this presidential election like how you cheated in the primaries, you had better think again. People are getting tired of you now. You are stale news now so you had better take the back seat. It is so good to see and hear someone like Palin because she is a 100% better candidate than Obama and Biden. I like the change they are talking about because their campaign has become so negative now that its does remind of the old style of politics. So all you Obama supporters who are looking for a change, you had better look somewhere else for that because Obama is and will never be about change. Maybe the only change there is with him is that he is black.

Obama really thought he had this won but we now see that McCain/Palin are giving him the fight of his life. Don't ever take things for granted which is what he was doing. Now he wants Hillary Clinton to fight his losing battle for him. I suppose if he does lose in November, he and his ignorant supporters will go back to blaming Hillary for his loss.

Obama needs to do inspirational speeches again. That's how he get attentions and motivate young voters. It's also a good way to distract the media attention to Pallin right now.

He needs to go back to his winning strategy in the primary race. Republicans cannot accuse him of a celebrity anymore, since Sarah is a true celebrity with no real experience.

TyWebb   September 9th, 2008 2:14 pm ET

Worry is not the key…Barack should get more direct with his answers to questions. Instead of saying, "You'll have to ask John McCain…" when asked about Palin's readiness to be the next Presidient, let alone Vice President, just say – NO! The Republicans have done it enought to him. Get sharper and more focused, Barack.

J from DC   September 9th, 2008 2:13 pm ET

Yes John McCain is switching his colors and talk to match Obama's. Conservative Republicans are running as Democrats now. But be not fooled. This is not the reason for his recent poll bumps.
Stop looking for dirt on Palin because she is clean, maybe vindictive at best. The hard reality is that women identify with her because she looks and feels familiar to them. The problem is that they really can’t see how different she is from most of them. When they switch the Supreme Court next year, pro-choice goes out the window with it. But not for 4 years, but for the next 20 years. That is the wool being pulled over women’s eyes.
Problem is, women are not carrying this critical issue (their right to choose) in the forefront of their minds. They won’t get it tell it’s too late, and after the price for Palins seat proves too expensive in personal rights.

Sally from Cali   September 9th, 2008 2:13 pm ET

Palin is the elitist. She and her pals call themselves the Elite 6.

Palin has made this election a farce about personalities and not issues. And women all over America are falling for it hook, line, and sinker. I have to give it to the lobbyists who are running McCain's campaign. They really do know how women think (or rather don't think).

The presidency used to be the highest achievement possible. Now it's a joke. The Republican party is conning America … again.

Go with the real Mavericks!

McCain-Palin 08

Aaron   September 9th, 2008 2:12 pm ET

The polls are changing everyday. Palin has energized the evangelical base that had been lukewarm at best for McCain. The polls after the debates should give a much clearer snapshot of voting trends. Governor Palin is certainly a lightning rod for each party. Her views tend toward extremist and most Americans are unaware of her positions. When she starts giving regular news conferences and we have a clear picture of what she actually thinks, the polls could swing in any direction. If we have learned anything in this historic political season, it is that the polls are unreliable.

Spencer, San Diego   September 9th, 2008 2:11 pm ET

Obama is very worried. He is now loosing in all polls, lost almost all support from independents, and women. He is scared, out of money, out of socialist ideas and his idea of change is the senator that came to DC over 30 years ago.

McCain will win huge this fall.

Frank Canada   September 9th, 2008 2:11 pm ET

I can't help thinking about the comparison that was made between Obama and McCain because of their polciies and/or lack of policies.

Almost everyone in America that doesn't own 7 houses or makes less than 5 million a year are finding themselves in a rather large hole that keeps getting deeper by the day.

The John McCain campaign is offering everyone in this hole a shovel to help get themselves out while the Obama campaign is offering everyone a ladder to help get themselves out.

That is just about the most logical and honest view of this entire election process and you would think more Americans would be able to relate to this scenario.

People are not falling for this mess.

Issues Sue   September 9th, 2008 2:06 pm ET

I love when the Obama camp speaks on "issues."

CHANGE education: Let's take a look at Chicago, where our illustrious candidate spent some time "in the trenches" of the community. Their inner-city schools are so bad, that the Harvard graduates send the little O's to private school. I guess Obama's solution is trick the American people into dumping more money into a failing system? Sounds like More of the Same, to use some Harvard rhetoric.

CHANGE the economy: His administration promises to be More of the Same of his campaign, except instead of asking for our money they'll just take more of it.

CHANGE healthcare: By adopting Hillary Clinton's plan, because she's smart with ideas, and Obama's good with words.

The country will be a joke if we vote for this ticket.
