LEBANON, Ohio (CNN) – Sarah Palin refuses to yield on her claim that she opposed the infamous Bridge to Nowhere earmark, despite charges by the Obama campaign that her assertion is a "lie."
"I told Congress thanks but no thanks for that Bridge to Nowhere," Palin said Tuesday in Lebanon, Ohio.
Earlier: Obama camp calls bridge claim a 'lie'
Though Palin recently came out against the completion of the Gravina Island Bridge, she initially supported the project as governor before it became a national symbol of wasteful pork barrel spending. In 2007, Palin’s office cancelled work on the bridge, but Alaska still kept the federal funds that were allocated for state transportation projects.
In her two years as governor, Alaska has requested nearly $750 million in earmarks, and in a Fairbanks newspaper column earlier this year, she wrote that federal monies, including earmarks, are “incredibly important” to the state. Palin also helped secure millions of dollars in federal money for her hometown of Wasilla while she was mayor.
Nevertheless, Palin told the outdoor audience in Ohio - many of whom came out in spite of the rain – that she was a champion of earmark reform in Alaska.
She then accused Barack Obama of using his role in the Senate to exploit the federal system.
“So as we reformed the abuses of earmarks in our state, our opponent was requesting nearly a billion dollars in earmarks as a senatorial privilege, as I was vetoing half a billion as an executive responsibility,” she said.
Palin said she and McCain “are ready to work together to end these corrupt practices once and for all in our Congress.”
change in her pocket that you can believe in:
ANCHORAGE – Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has billed taxpayers for 312 nights spent in her own home during her first 19 months in office, charging a "per diem" allowance intended to cover meals and incidental expenses while traveling on state business.
The governor also has charged the state for travel expenses to take her children on official out-of-town missions. And her husband, Todd, has billed the state for expenses and a daily allowance for trips he makes on official business for his wife.
All I can say is "They are all crooks!"! Expecially those who deny it, they are the worst! Crooks! Crooks! Crooks!
Hey look I found the truth!
I think supporting palin shows how narrowminded Americans are
You Are A Liar Palin! We Already Know It! Repeating A Lie Doesnt Make It True!
Lol, who does she think she is kidding? The record is clear.
Who does she think she's fooling? The facts are already out there, the cat is out of the box.
Give her a lie- detector test.....she'll fail it
What a sleazy campaign. All about personalities, not issues... and now they think they can just LIE without repercussions. WE SHOULD ALL HAVE ZERO RESPECT FOR THIS KIND OF BLATANT LYING. This is what we want in a leader???
The Rethuglican party is the party of lies, fears, and smears. As proof please review the last eight (8) years and the current talking points and McCainPalin.
They don't talk about the issues becuase they are out of sync with the average American.
I'm so tired of this "Thanks, but no thanks" mantra on her Bridge to Nowhere claim.
Even if she did change her mind on that bridge, which she wisely may have done, she STILL kept the money for the bridge. Then, she builds the road leading to the Bridge to Nowhere with that money. That says "Dead End" to me.
"I oppose things once they become unpopular, that way I'm always on the "right" side. Oh, but then I kept the money and wasted it elsewhere."
This woman is a fraud and a liar!! no mccain no palin no way no how i cant wait until all the dirt comes out on her cnn when are you gonna report how she took TAXPAYERS MONEY AND MADE TAXPAYERS PAY FOR HER AND HER HUSBANDS AND CHILDRENS PERSONAL VACATIONS PERSONAL THINGS ETC!
This is a LIE and it is documented. I am a research librarian and I have done my homework for my patrons. It is a lie.
because she doesn't have any other talking pts, what a loser!
She's like a robot that needs to be reprogrammed....if u take out the "bridge to no where and "putting" the jet on ebay" there's nothing left to the speech!
PUH-LEEEZE. She didn't even put a stop to it! Read the latest Wall Street Journal. It was stopped BEFORE she took office in 2005. But she sure did KEEP the $$$!!!
-Palin is McFailin'
I admire her guts, but don't hide the details. You initially were FOR the bridge to nowhere. Let's not ignore that very real fact.
Although I will vote for Obama in Nov, I realy don't see this country recovering fully under either McCain or Obama, although I believe that Obama will give us the best chance to get better as a nation.
Lou Dobbs for president in 2012.
Please forward this article to ALL your friends who may be delusional
and leaning towards a McCain/Palin ticket!!!!
CNN Please post!
wait a minute..... is she actually accusing Sen. Obama of being corrupt??? She's nutty.
the "half billion" was two per cent of the state budget. Is that all the "wasteful spending" she could find?
The fact is that, per capita, Alaska is the largest beneficiary by many times of ear marks and pork. The McCain campaign is deliberately misleading voters.
I am troubled that CNN will not give more play to this "reformer's" acceptance of a daily per diem for living in her own home. Or her claim that she "fired" the governor's chef to save money when she simply transferred the chef to another position.
SHE IS A LIAR
Lie, lie, lie until someone believes you seems to be the M/O of the GOP.
We KNOW that the bridge was funded by the federal government and Palin kept the money for her state..
We KNOW that Sarah "Pig In Lipstick" Palin was for the Bridge before she changed her tune.
We KNOW that she continued to build the road to nowhere even after the bridge was canceled.
We KNOW that Alaska receives more money in earmarks per capita than any other state.
Disputing these facts is moronic.
The bridge to nowhere would likely have sparked new development and opportunity in the newly connected lands, does she really want credit for killing it?
Sounds like Bush II. Never say you made a mistake.
Even when everyone know you did.
And they kept the money and spent it?
