Rangel is not resigning.
Rangel is not resigning.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Rep. Charles Rangel, a New York Democrat, said Tuesday he would not step down as chairman of the powerful House Ways and Means committee in the face of calls from the Republican leader in the House for him to resign.

Rangel has been under fire for failing to report income from a rental property he owns in the Dominican Republic. He admitted Tuesday he had not paid tax on the income, but said it was a mistake and that he would pay whatever back taxes he owes.

Vote this thief out. Stupidity is not a crime bur income tax evasion is.

Well since CNN, don't want to let my comment be listed to share TRUE information............PLEASE CHECK OUT STORY ABOUT PALIN...........Dick & Sharon's LA Progressive:

Just a example: Alaskans Speak (In A Frightened Whisper):
waitress......the waitress serving her table at the time and who asked that her last name not be used, Gov. Palin was eating lunch with five or six people when the subject of the Democrat’s primary battle came up. that people at nearby tables would likely hear her, uttered the slur and then laughed loudly as her meal mates joined in appreciatively. “It was kind of disgusting,” .....said in a phone interview after admitting that she is frightened of being discovered telling folks in the “lower 48” about life near the North Pole.

Yes, this is their fake CHANGE, I will not allow my children to think this is OK, I want them to love everyone without color being a problem!.

sarahinfla   September 10th, 2008 12:04 pm ET

Did McCain resign just a few months back when the property taxes were not paid on one of his many homes NO!!!, They said, it was just a little oversite.

That's what happens when you own so many homes you can't remember all the specifics.... Rangle pay what ever amount and move on.

RealityKing   September 10th, 2008 12:03 pm ET

This man has enriched himself over the last 30 yrs while watching the black family fall apart under his ideas of socialism. Charley Rangel needs to be thrown out of office by the black community!!

LMAO   September 10th, 2008 12:03 pm ET

Typical Democrat.

Surprised he didn't try to blame it on Bush somehow.

We have record spending and record corruption in government since the democrats took control of Congress.

Time for a change.

America can't handle more democrats.

Jake   September 10th, 2008 12:03 pm ET

Typical politicians... ALL of them.

Do as I SAY, NOT as I do.

Both candidates would be better suited to making themselves look better by trumpeting their records and plans for our country instead of trying to make the other person look worse at their expense.

DEBATES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dems 2008   September 10th, 2008 12:02 pm ET

You hypocrites!!!

Were any of you calling for McCain to withdraw when he failed to pay taxes on his Malibu home just a few months ago?

YOU are so typical of the problem we have in Washington.

Accuse, accuese, accuse... but no solutions!!!

Stop it. If you want to vote for McCain, go ahead, its your vote. But stop the namecalling because it always comes back at you!

Well with the Democrats holding the check book for the last two years, our deficit rose by 246 billion dollars, it doubled in one year, that may be a record. These tax evaders are running the show .Talk about someone not capable of handling both work and homelife-Rangle could be the poster child.

Wow CNN, you seem to be closing these articles for comment pretty quickly. Tell it like it is Sen. Obama! By the way I just gave another $25 to your campaign this morning! I am a white, college educated, veteran who will not fall for these sad Republican tactics.

Rob   September 10th, 2008 11:56 am ET

Rangel, tell them that you will resign if Palin does for colecting over three hundred days travel per diem while staying at home ! And Biden. How can you debate the anti christ? Run for your life. McBush tried to call Obama ‘The One’.
But look who is the Rock Star now and who has slipped in the Polls. Look who is adored and followed even though she is being investigated on several ethics charges. Look who has no experience or qualifications yet no one in America can see it. Look who belonged to a Doomsday Cult church in Alaska that believes the world will soon be destoyed and only Alaska will be spared. And still America’s eyes are blinded. So now who is “THE ONE” ???

Geeze louise. Let's get a little equity here.

Matt   September 10th, 2008 11:54 am ET

typical. democrats don't have to resign for embezzling or tax evasion or sex scandals or hiding cash in their freezers. But let this happen to a republican...

no matter how much lipstick you put on this pig, it is still a democrat playing to a double standard.

Indiana Voter   September 10th, 2008 11:54 am ET

Of course he won't resign. Democrats aren't held to the same standard as Republicans are held to. If this was a Republican, he would have already resigned and it would have been on the front page of every major newspaper in America.

Lois   September 10th, 2008 11:54 am ET

Good Rangel, DO NOT RESIGN. Probably the ones yelling the loudest about it, have a lot more to hide that is not a mistake. DO NOT RELENT!!

Grinell Meadors   September 10th, 2008 11:54 am ET

Fraudulent tax reports are not unlawful if you are a democrat.

tc   September 10th, 2008 11:53 am ET

He is a politician and didn't know laws about taxes??? Come on. As a politician your returns are scruntinized much more than anyone elses and you are goind to blame the account? Whatever.

Generation X   September 10th, 2008 11:51 am ET

Otis   September 10th, 2008 11:49 am ET

Another corrupt politiician.

Of course, the bigger issue is there are way too many laws requesting what you need to report and file. Even Congress can't keep up with it.

Their solution? Legislate more laws that need to be enforced by the bureaucracies in Washington.

What goes around comes around....

Enough is enough!

Andy J, NY   September 10th, 2008 11:47 am ET

Riiiiiiight.

leapfrog   September 10th, 2008 11:35 am ET

I'm not sure what is more soul-draining sad, that a candidate for the presidency (McCain) chauvinistically ignores campaigning on the pressing issues of the day in favor or trash talking opponents, or that a majority of Americans apparently agrees. We are truly in the age of trash TV, where superficiality trumps substance. Sad. So sad. Our forefathers would be ashamed.

It is amazing when Rangel got caught with his hands in the "cookie jar" how eager he is willing to reslove it. I'll pay, I'll pay. The cookie monster has finally caught up with him........the ethics committee needs to mandate his resignation from the Ways amd Means Committee.......but of course, they want.......because they each have their own "cookie jars."

Andrew   September 10th, 2008 11:24 am ET

Charlie Rangel is just one more example of our congressmen and women legislating laws for the country yet feeling they do not apply to them. It is easy to see why Rangel and his Demecratic colleagues favor letting the Bush tax cuts expire and putting a large percentage of the tax burden on people in the same tax bracket as the congressmen. They don't pay their taxes and think they should get away with it.

Rangel's excuse that he made a mistake is either a bold-faced lie or he has no understanding of what is income and our income tax code that he helped write. If it is the former he should be prosecuted for tax evasion and thrown out of Congress. If it is the latter he is not intelligent enough to chair the House Ways and Means committee and it should signal to his distric that he is not qualified to be in Congress.

why oh why?? :(   September 10th, 2008 11:24 am ET

Why does it feel like another hurtful political election? It is so unfortunate that we all can not UNITE. I'm understanding of Palin supporters...and demanding acceptance). But I am also a wife and mother. People should remember that Sara Palin is Vice President nominee for the Republican party....not Presidential nominee for the United States of America. Although she has many qualities. There could be a time when she would have an opportunity to become a Pesidential candidate. That time is not NOW. She should take that into concideration. But I am not opposed in any way to Barack Obama becoming president of the United States. We definately need to help support eachother. Amen.

S.B. Stein E.B. NJ   September 10th, 2008 11:24 am ET

If he pays the money owed plus penalties (a large one say about 10 times the amount of the taxes), that should be enough for everyone as long as it doesn't happen again.

Jason   September 10th, 2008 11:23 am ET

What a joke this Rangel is – resign and take Barack with you!
My congressman(Roscoe Bartlett) "forgot" to report over 1million in home sales on his taxes and he threw his wife and son under the bus claiming it was their fault. He's 83 and losing his marbles – he'll probably get reelected though. This is the kind of "leadership" we have in Washington. God Help Us, please!

Dmitriy   September 10th, 2008 11:23 am ET

An Independent Democrat   September 10th, 2008 11:22 am ET

Marc from Indiana and fella from Chicago – this has nothing to do with him being a Democrat – a Republican politician would likely refuse as well. Crimninal politicians come in all flavors. You might be surprised to learn that even many Democrats believe he should own up and resign – I am truly an independent Democrat and I call'em as I see em, Republican or Democrat. Ethics and punishment for wrongdoing should be applied both ways, regardless of political party. It's funny – we Democrats also believe in "Country First"

Reporting errors or mistakes are routine in filing returns and that is why we have adjustments or amendments to change or correct the mistakes.

This is nothing unusual and he should not resign over it.

No need to resign at all.

Mike, TX   September 10th, 2008 11:22 am ET

This is an example of the corruption in Washington. This is an example also of why Obama won't change anything. Do you really think Obama has the courage to take on Rangel?

Rangel is responsible for the Freddy Mac and Fanny Mae debacle as well, yet no one questions him on that.

Shoddy reporting on corrupt politicians.

Phil   September 10th, 2008 11:21 am ET

This is just one of the many reasons there should be term limits for any public office. Serving in the Senate or House is not meant to be a career. As long as they are careers, there will be more and more corruption.

Funny how some of these guys can get away with things like not paying taxes and saying it was a mistake. If that was the average american we'd regret it for the rest of our lives. Just goes to show that if your part of the government you can get away with ANYTHING.

And its Democrats like this that the Obamabots want in congress. If Obama was smart he'd call for Rangel to resign, toss him aside to help his failing campain. But as we all know the Dems try to show unity which will allow McCain to exploit this to help his campain.

I love it when Charlie Rangel is on TV. He is great!

However, sadly, I must agree that the Republicans have a right to ask him to step down as Chairman.

Remember Trett Lott, he made a comment that was wrong but he was forced to resign as Majority Leader. That was making a comment.

Rep. Rangel admitted he hasn't paid taxes and that is worse than making a statement.

It's sad but fair is fair!

I wish the state's Attorney General would look into tax evasion, but I'm sure he's a democrat, so he probably won't. Chad, Wisco   September 10th, 2008 11:02 am ET

This shows that neither party is better than the other. Their are corrupt individuals in both. Please remember that there are hundreds of politicians that are very good and just that you will never hear of. Please dont let the bad apples make you think that everyone is bad. There are good people who do progress and make good changes for this country. I heard someone say on the radio that most of the time the best politicians you never hear from because they are busy doing their jobs. Personally I have lots of respect for Gov Jindal in that case as he said he would not run for VP because he already had a job and wanted to do good work there.

Rudy NYC   September 10th, 2008 10:54 am ET

I didn't know that if you collect rental income in a foreign country you need to declare it as income in the U.S. But, as chairman of the finance committee, whichever on it is, he of all people should know tax laws.

E.C.Coleman   September 10th, 2008 10:53 am ET

ANY CROOKED POLITICIAN WHO EVADES THE IRS SHOULD AUTOMATICALLY LOSE HIS JOB IN OUR CONGRESS. WHAT RANGEL HAS DONE IS THUMB HIS NOSE AT THE LAWS THAT GOVERN THIS NATION AND HE SHOULDN'T BE ALLOWED TO "PAY WHAT HE OWES.........." AS EASY AS THAT? I DON'T THINK SO!!!

Chris, Denver CO   September 10th, 2008 10:53 am ET

Wait. John McCain failed to pay property tax on one of his many homes. Why didn't the Republicans insist that he resign from the senate?

Jules   September 10th, 2008 10:52 am ET

The Republicans should be investigating their own corrupt party before they start picking on Rangel. So what's the status of all the millions of taxpayers money that when missing in Iraq? Why aren't they Republicans calling for an investigation?

Lin   September 10th, 2008 10:52 am ET

This is a mistake and Mr. Rangel is an honest man. That said it will be nice to see McCain and Sarah start cleaning up Washington.

E.C.Coleman   September 10th, 2008 10:51 am ET

OR, MAYBE CNN DIDN'T LIKE THE COMMENT ABOUT THE INTERNAL REVENUE AND THAT THE IRS SHOULD BE HARSH AND PENALIZE RANGEL JUST LIKE THE IRS SANCTIONS ORDINARY AMERICAN CITIZENS WITH IMPOSSIBLE FINES FOR BEING ONE WEEK LATE. KICK THIS MAN OUT OF CONGRESS............RANGEL IS NO GOOD AND DOESN'T UPHOLD THE LAWS OF THIS GOVERNMENT AND THIS NATION. IS THAT WHAT CNN DOESN'T LIKE?

Thomas5   September 10th, 2008 10:51 am ET

A Democrat who taxes the hell out of everybody else but "mistakenly" doesn't pay his own taxes?

Say it ain't so!

Jan From Boca Raton   September 10th, 2008 10:49 am ET

The Republicians want him to resign,OMG look who's calling the kettle
black. The Republicians are the biggest crooks in politics.

Bill Stapp   September 10th, 2008 10:48 am ET

It used to be a big deal when one of the senators or representatives broke the law or behaved badly.... today, like a murder in Chicago, it is hardly national news.

Our leaders don't commit crimes...they make "mistakes".

Gee... maybe they will have him appear before an ethics committee... which most Americans think is like a tea party where they all arrive in the same cars, ask polite questions during the party, then leave in the same cars again. If it is on TV, then they may yell at each other and then go to tea together after.

Fernandez   September 10th, 2008 10:47 am ET

Rangel-Do you know how many houses you own?

Praetorian, Fort Myers   September 10th, 2008 10:47 am ET

Second Rule of Politics: Never admit you are wrong or guilty until subpoena or arrest.

Another bastion of the Democratic Party leadership.

marc from Indiana   September 10th, 2008 10:45 am ET

What? A Democrat resigning because he betrayed the trust of the American people? It just doesn't happen. To do this, he would have to have a soul. These criminals have no soul or morals.

TONY   September 10th, 2008 10:45 am ET

I cannot wait for the vrdict to come down on Palin for "Troopergate".

Let's hope she has a Democratic judge. Would be nice to show that not only can the Supreme Court of Clowns be partisan.

TexicoFrom Mexico   September 10th, 2008 10:45 am ET

Just more smear from the lipstick pig Republicans. Let me inject here and I hope CNN will post. Why is it that the the east and left coast people of this great nation...the people of the big northern cities get the fact that what we have is not working? Why would you vote a 3rd time to something that has already failed twice? Just because you are a conservative or a liberal there comes a time when you have to say..hmm ok this aint working lets try something else. Well we did in 2000 and well the last eight has not worked out so lets try the Dems...if they are doing good in 4 or 8 years lets get rid of them...but please middle and southern america...lets not go for 4 more of the same. We need some kind of Health Care reform, we need some kind of Education Reform, Veterans need better benefits and better college programs...the current G.I. Bill is a JOKE! Lets get behind somethint different and please lets keep race and sex out of it....this is way too serious to vote for someone just because you WANT a female or an african american....this is ABOUT THE ISSUES PERIOD because the issues are the only thing that is going to save us.

Barack Is Speaking Now   September 10th, 2008 10:45 am ET

Barack is addressing the stupid lipstick distraction now. He's says "Enough". He says "Spare me the phony outrage, the phony talk about change. The American people want real answers."

Go Barack

Obama/Biden 08

TONY   September 10th, 2008 10:44 am ET

Nice try Republicans. Anything to take the spotlight off of that lying, cheating loser Palin.

FreeNLovIt   September 10th, 2008 10:44 am ET

why is McCain asking Obama to apologize for lipsticks on a pig? I will only do it if McCain apologizes to Hillary for the mean words he said to her back in the summer....

Doug in Georgia   September 10th, 2008 10:44 am ET

Hmmm the guy who heads up the committee that writes tax laws is caught being a tax cheat – and not only won't step down from Congress... but won't even step down from his committee chairmanship.

Yeah, that's some real change we can believe in.

FreeNLovIt   September 10th, 2008 10:43 am ET

We cant get Bush to resign or Cheney to resign, why should he resign?

Like Jesus said 'Let the one who has not sinned, cast the first stone..

Darrell   September 10th, 2008 10:43 am ET

Leave this dear man alone, let him pay his taxes and let him be.If the Rebublicans want to admit that the McCain/ Palin ticket is a hoax and have lied at every single event and slandered without facts then maybe they can stand up for truth. The McCain campaign has made a mockery out of truth and facts so they can hardly judge someone that has admitted to a mistake and is willing to pay.If we were to pressure this great man to resign then McCain and Palin should be resigning immediately,as they won't even admit to irreversable lies on a daily basis.

Jim   September 10th, 2008 10:42 am ET

See ya buddy. I may be voting for Obama and supporting the Dems over teh Reps this year, but "oops I forgot to pay taxes on this" sounds like more of the same.

If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem at this point.

Rebecca   September 10th, 2008 10:42 am ET

At least he is willing to pay his back taxes. How many coorporations get away with paying taxes by listing their HQ offshore. The US loses $100 billions of dollars in revenue because of thousands of these coorporations avoiding their responsibilities. Why aren't they being investigated?

randy   September 10th, 2008 10:41 am ET

Another dirt ball, shocking.

CW4Barack   September 10th, 2008 10:41 am ET

Don't resign....and tell that Repugnant to go check to see if McBush is paying taxes on all his SEVEN houses!

Farrell, Houston, Tx   September 10th, 2008 10:41 am ET

There is no requirement to quit or be fired from your job because you owe back taxes. If that were the case, there would be millions of Americans required to resign or be fired. Republicans hands aren't clean, investigate John McCain.

Ohio   September 10th, 2008 10:40 am ET

Imagine if a Republican had a no interest loan and did not pay taxes.

When the chairman of House Ways and Means Committee doesnt pay taxes, he should not pounce when average Joe forgets to pay taxes.

Last Honest Man   September 10th, 2008 10:40 am ET

Rangel is a Putz. He has been above it far to long. Its time hold this guy to the same standard we (should) expect from public officials. Instead we get "Rangels". Wake up America. Make some demands

tornado1972   September 10th, 2008 10:40 am ET

Stand you ground Rangel

jjenkins   September 10th, 2008 10:40 am ET

It's politics as usual for Rangel and Obama. I thought Obama was a different kind of politician?

Ed   September 10th, 2008 10:37 am ET

A "mistake," eh? Just like the "oops, I didn't realize I had a fourth illegal rent stabilized apartment" mistake? Charlie, you are a disgrace to the Democratic part, a disgrace to New York and a disgrace to society. Please go away.

JDC   September 10th, 2008 10:36 am ET

All these do-gooder liberals have two sets of rules...one for them, one for us. SURPRISE! They don't want to pay taxes, either!
He should go to jail!!!

Enlightened Voter   September 10th, 2008 10:34 am ET

If bush and co. have not been charged for far worse crimes then you definitely should not resign. Rethuglican hypocrisy at its best.
