Rangel says he will not resign over back taxes dispute

Rangel is not resigning.
Rangel is not resigning.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Rep. Charles Rangel, a New York Democrat, said Tuesday he would not step down as chairman of the powerful House Ways and Means committee in the face of calls from the Republican leader in the House for him to resign.

Rangel has been under fire for failing to report income from a rental property he owns in the Dominican Republic. He admitted Tuesday he had not paid tax on the income, but said it was a mistake and that he would pay whatever back taxes he owes.

  3. An Independent Democrat

Marc from Indiana and fella from Chicago – this has nothing to do with him being a Democrat – a Republican politician would likely refuse as well. Crimninal politicians come in all flavors. You might be surprised to learn that even many Democrats believe he should own up and resign – I am truly an independent Democrat and I call'em as I see em, Republican or Democrat. Ethics and punishment for wrongdoing should be applied both ways, regardless of political party. It's funny – we Democrats also believe in "Country First"

What a joke this Rangel is – resign and take Barack with you!
My congressman(Roscoe Bartlett) "forgot" to report over 1million in home sales on his taxes and he threw his wife and son under the bus claiming it was their fault. He's 83 and losing his marbles – he'll probably get reelected though. This is the kind of "leadership" we have in Washington. God Help Us, please!

If he pays the money owed plus penalties (a large one say about 10 times the amount of the taxes), that should be enough for everyone as long as it doesn't happen again.

  7. why oh why?? :(

Why does it feel like another hurtful political election? It is so unfortunate that we all can not UNITE. I'm understanding of Palin supporters...and demanding acceptance). But I am also a wife and mother. People should remember that Sara Palin is Vice President nominee for the Republican party....not Presidential nominee for the United States of America. Although she has many qualities. There could be a time when she would have an opportunity to become a Pesidential candidate. That time is not NOW. She should take that into concideration. But I am not opposed in any way to Barack Obama becoming president of the United States. We definately need to help support eachother. Amen.

Charlie Rangel is just one more example of our congressmen and women legislating laws for the country yet feeling they do not apply to them. It is easy to see why Rangel and his Demecratic colleagues favor letting the Bush tax cuts expire and putting a large percentage of the tax burden on people in the same tax bracket as the congressmen. They don't pay their taxes and think they should get away with it.

Rangel's excuse that he made a mistake is either a bold-faced lie or he has no understanding of what is income and our income tax code that he helped write. If it is the former he should be prosecuted for tax evasion and thrown out of Congress. If it is the latter he is not intelligent enough to chair the House Ways and Means committee and it should signal to his distric that he is not qualified to be in Congress.

It is amazing when Rangel got caught with his hands in the "cookie jar" how eager he is willing to reslove it. I'll pay, I'll pay. The cookie monster has finally caught up with him........the ethics committee needs to mandate his resignation from the Ways amd Means Committee.......but of course, they want.......because they each have their own "cookie jars."

What a load of crap you ignorant republicans spew. A simple oversight. Do you honestly think this was intentional? Never mind, you're republicans, and therefore you are unable to think on your own, only able to nod ignorantly in agreement with whatever Limbaugh tells you.

So wait. GOP senators get indicted and its ok if they don't step down, but a dem (and his accountant) messes up on filing his taxes and he should resign? I think we've all slipped a little on our taxes, but most of us haven't been indicted for anything.
